🥰 The Village Library Demon-Hunting Society (C.M. Waggoner, author; Cindy Piller, narrator) - extremely entertaining read! recced by my friend door. billed as a 'riotous mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Murder, She Wrote' and surprisingly those comps are extremely accurate. Love the conceit. also really liked what it said about never being too old/cool for whimsy.

The gambling aspects of squid games have always piqued my interest. It has a prevalent effect on the games and is one of the factors contributing to the show. To Gi-hun having a gambling addiction, to the gambling aspects of Squid Games in general. One thing that stuck out to me is the noise the piggy bank makes when adding money to the bank.
It sounds eerily similar to the casino jackpot sound effect in a slot machine. 120 Essential Casino & Gambling Sound FX by Sonic scope time: 0:22 to 0:28 to slot machine jackpot sound effect by Charlotte Pollock on YouTube are some examples.
One second of 60 Hz can give good dopamine release, while 20 seconds of 20 Hz sound frequently provides an even greater dopamine release. (Stimul.2019) The piggy bank sound effect usually goes on for around 20 seconds more or less depending on how many players were eliminated in that game. One podcast that breaks down the sound nicely is Twenty Thousand Hertz in episode 46: Slot Machines: The Addictive Power of Sound.
Redditor, thrakotool, also made a list of rules of sound design in the comments of r/musictheory: https://www.reddit.com/r/musictheory/s/4qJBIrfUy4
Before you guys comment, I am aware that it is illegal to gamble in Korea, and one of the only legal ways to gamble is horse racing. Also, underground or morally grey slot machines are nowhere as similar as the ones in the US, nor do they have the same intended purpose.
Slot machine in Korea: https://www.reddit.com/r/Living_in_Korea/s/xF8Cc76t2R
Like dopamine, if you get too much of it you slowly get used to it and need an increase of it to feel the same level of pleasure. I assume that most of the players don't regularly hear that sound due to the difference and inaccessibility of slot machines. They have less exposure to it in general than the usual casino players. The lights and sounds can promote risky decision-making especially if it´s the players' first time exposed to the sound.
I want to know what you guys think about this subject and I don't claim to be an expert on this matter. All of the information I gained is from secondary sources and I´m more than willing to edit anything that is incorrect. I find this topic interesting to learn about and might add more in the near future.
Brain Stimul. (2019) Differential release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens evoked by low- versus high-frequency medial prefrontal cortex stimulation. National Institutes of Health.

Okay, we've discussed aphantasia - in lack of inner imagery - but here's a new question: do you have inner speech? I've linked to a podcast about this (there's a transcript, too) in the Comments.
My own daily life is directed/narrated/remarked-upon in my inner voice. And I hear every word I read or write. Often, a line of dialog was the first thing that set a chapter or entire novel off.
Characters had very distinct voices as the stories developed. I sometimes felt that I was just transcribing their "speech." As I used to say, "There's a fine line between what I do as a novelist and a condition people take medication for..."
The experience was especially vivid with particular characters. There was a night on tour for Dreamers, when I was also writing Doc, when I woke up in my hotel room to Doc's "voice" telling me, "Write this down, darlin." That became the scene when he asked each visitor to "Tell me about a day when you were happy."

Wrote a bit for Halfblood...
And I'm just...I'm really proud of how it came out. I feel like it's a great introduction to Kashi so even if it's not a new intro to Halfblood I still think it's a good glimpse at how Kashi is/thinks before she meets Layla 😁
450 wc Introduction to Kashi First person POV
----------------------------------------------------
Rain. Small drops of liquid that fell from the dark sky and gathered in the cracks of the tar-ridden pavement. I watched as the images in the puddles danced and multiplied over and over and over again, split by the ever-changing surface of the water that captured them. I stopped and stared at my own reflection in the puddle, listening as the rain created a curtain of sound that covered the area.
The human ear can hear sounds between the roughly twenty and twenty thousand Hertz. The average Terran dog can hear roughly between sixty-seven and forty-five thousand.
My species can detect ranges far beyond this spectrum. The calculations are beyond my reach, as science was not always my gift even back home.
So, I suppose I can put it like this. A human, walking along this rainy street at the halfway point of moonrise and moonfall, would likely say things were quiet. Perhaps the aware human would be able to clock the sound of the electricity flickering in the streetlamp above, or would listen to the pattering of the rain against the street and call it light ambient noise.
To my ears, each and every drop could be heard in a smattering of sounds, from the ones that hit the muddy puddles to the ones that hit the soaked concrete. Each different. Each unique. Each carrying different notes through the air to create an array of notes that my ears could pick up. I could also hear the creak of the metal in the wind, the buildings sighing as they settled against their foundations, the squeak of my soaked leather boots against the pavement, the rustle of my wet jacket as it rubbed against my shirt and jeans. The sounds of the insects scuttling for dry patches. The sounds of the humans in the buildings surrounding me. The mechanical whirr of air conditioners and the whispered conversations and the secrets and the shifting and the moving and the ever-going cacophony of sound that comes with living on this rock.
Of course, one learns to dull the senses to survive. My ears could pick it up. But my species were also born with the ability to filter what sounds made it to our ears. So while I had the ability to hear it all, it didn’t mean it was all the time. Hearing all that could - and did, a long time ago - drive one mad.
The magic making me human helped in that regard as well. I could access my species’ abilities, but each and every one was dulled anyway when stuck in this…two-legged form.
I huffed and kicked at my reflection, obscuring it even more before I walked on.

“Blah, blah, blah” and “yada, yada, yada” have had plenty written about them. But there’s a longtime cousin of these phrases that’s much less understood. We use it all the time, yet it’s not in the dictionary. It’s not even Google-able. In this episode, we investigate the linguistic mysteries of the Five Dah Phenomenon. Featuring linguist & philosopher Paul Saka, and psychologist Helen Abadzi.

I would like to refer people to Karen Jacobsen, the Australian GPS voice, who was paid a one off fee to record her voice at a time before text to speech and this kind of breadth of use was commonplace.
That one job resulted in her voice being used for everything from GPS, to airport and lift announcements, and IVRs. She has one of the most recognisable voices in the world.
But she only received the one payment for the job, which must have been a sore spot when her family was in financial difficulties later while her voice was heard everywhere she went.
