I wanted to make this post last year but I got caught up in events (plus I couldn't find back my sources). But given the recent international events have completely turned away most media's attention from the Russian war on Ukraine, I thought it was finally time to make this post.
Because I want to talk about something truly crazy. Something that shows how deep Russia's distortion, warping and twisting of the Christian religion went - and how back there, we're back to the times of holy inquisitions.
Many people have covered the fact that the propaganda of Putin over Russia isn't just mediatic and politic but also religious. There were many viral reports and TV reports and investigations about how the higher-ups of the Russian Orthodox Church were in Putin's pocket, openly shared Putinist propaganda during their religious offices, declared that the war against Ukraine was a "holy war" that God wanted, that Putin was merely the agent and arm of God - there was this whole thing about the Patriarch blessing the weapons of the Russian soldiers sent to the front, and about him explicitely saying that the Devil and/or the Antichrist was in Ukraine.
But there is something that is even bigger and more shocking than that, and that shows how in Russia war = religion. It is a building: the Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces.
Tumblr media
The building of this cathedral started in 2018, but it was only completed in 2020. The cathedral is technically a religious building, but the main reason of its existence is to celebrated the "various military feats of Russia", chief among which - the Russian victory over the Nazis during World War II. The completion of the cathedral was done on the Victory Day celebrating the Soviet Union crushing the Nazis ; and it was opened on the "Day of Remembrance and Sorrow" (a commemoration of when the Nazis turned against the Soviet Union and tried to march over it). There's something about "the resurrection of Christ" in there, but let's be honest, this was built exclusively for and around war.
This building is absolutely grandiose, without a doubt - and its beauty and enormity is a proof of Russia's dedication to its unique mix of religion and military matters. In fact it was considered one of the great monuments of Russia... until the Ukrainian attacks made people reconsider what this symbol ACTUALLY meant.
Tumblr media
And the thing with this building is that it was FILLED with carefully-thought war symbolism. For example, take the main dome's diameter: 19,45 meters... To symbolize the year when World War II stopped (1945). [Another source rather claims that the dome's diameter is 22,43 meters but it doesn't change the symbol: the Nazi capitulation was signed at 22h43]. There is a small dome that is 14,18 meters in height - because the conflict between the Nazis and the Soviet Union lasted 1 418 days and nights. And the belfry is 75 meters tall... because 75 years had passed between 2020 and the end of World War II. By the way, did you know that when Russians talk of the end of World War II and how they helped defeat the Nazis, they do not speak of the "World War"? No, they rather speak of "the end of the Great Patriotic War". Because the conflict between the USSR and the Nazis wasn't part of any world conflict, oh no! It was just one specific war against the patry - aka Russia. The total height of the Church is a reference to Saint Vladimir's (the one who Christianized the Rus lands) birth date, etc etc...
Things get better - the steps and floors of the cathedral are made of metal. Metal made from the melted war trophies taken from the Nazis - their weapons an their tanks for example. As such, the Russians will forever walk on the remains of their old ennemies. The church's saints are carefully chosen as the patron-saints of the Russian military: saint Elijah the Prophet, saint Barbara, saint Fyodor Ushakov... All organized in the four sections of the church, each dedicated to a different branch of the army; ground forces, navy, aerospace military and strategic missile forces. There's a lot of depictions of Jesus wielding a sword too.
Tumblr media
And then we go to the mosaics... Ah, the mosaics! These mosaics are not about the history of Christianity, but about the military history of Russia, each one depicting a great battle or a great Russian victory. You have several depictions of the orders of the Red Army overthrowing the Imperial forces in Russia, you also have depictions of the Soviet (or Communist) successes during World War II of course - there's the Battle of Stalingrad, there's the Reichstag fire... You also have more recent depictions of soldiers, with a kalashnikov in their hands... And of course, the latest mosaic depicting the latest "Russian military success" at the date of the Cathedral's fundation: the annexation of Crimea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This mosaic was in fact part of a dual scandal, before while the Cathedral was built, two images were leaked of two intended mosaics - one for the Crimea annexation and one for the (exclusively Soviet of course) victory over the Nazis in World War II (sorry, "The Great Patriotic War"). And the scandal was because on the latter Stalin was depicted, and on the former it was Putin who was on the mosaic. There was a big outcry, and ultimately the artists of the cathedral decided to remove the faces of Putin and Stalin... But not before asking for Putin's opinion first, and then - this is very symbolic - their faces were replaced by icons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah all of this is kind of overwhelming - but one has to remember that in Russia, the Orthodox Church is on the same level as the various ministeries of Putin. The Patriarch Kirill, who consecrated the cathedral, has as such openly supported Putin's war and politics - invited and present at all of Putin's government meetings alongside his various ministers, the Patiarch has also placed in his sermons the exact same slogans and words used by the televisual Russian propaganda. In spring 2022, he held a whole sermon about how the Russian people had to stand together as brothers again the treacherous and wicked West - and added that the reason the Donbas distrusted the Russian Orthodox Church was because of the "vile phenomenon" of the Gay Pride - and added that it was against the corruption of the West, and the anti-religious "gay propaganda", that Russia was fighting - that it was to eliminate THIS that they threw bombs over Ukraine.
Speaking of that I almost forgot! Very recently the cathedral added a new stained glass to its windows... One made with broken glass shards from Mariupol, collected during the Russian attack.
Tumblr media
And let's not forget how the Patriarch promised to absolve all the Russians sent to the front who would die on the battlefield against the Ukrainians (the SAME kind of words that were used in the Middle-Ages for the crusades!) - because, and I quote, "such a sacrifice will cleanse you of all human sin". And at the beginning of 2023 (if I recall well), the Patriarch went as far as to say that if Russia didn't win this war, "someone" (he didn't specify who) but SOMEONE would appear "with the intentions of dominating, and then destroying the world" (aka, the Antichrist). This was later backed up by Dmitry Medvedev, who added that the real goal of the war against Ukrainian was to "stop the supreme leader of Hell" (and this time he dropped names, but several at once - Satan, Lucifer, Iblis).
We are literaly back to medieval crusades and to the crazy witch-hunts. Russian propagandists will stop at nothing to convince people that everything is evil outside of Russia.
"But..." you're going to say, "Not all Orthodox Russian priests can be falling for this crap!". And indeed you are right, there are priests in the Russian Orthodox Church that called out the fact Christianity was about peace, not war. The problem is that the higher-ups of the Church have started a hunt for all priests that advocate for peace rather than war - and they simply kick them out of the Church and revoke their status as priests. The Orthodox priests who refuse to see their faith turned into political propaganda are forced to flee into other Orthodox countries to maintain their status as priests.

Please help this russian youtuber escape Russia
This video is from Jimmy Madison on youtube, he is in a terrible situation, he wants to leave Russia, but his passport barely allows him to go anywhere. He is living off of donations right now, becouse he lost his job at the start of the war becouse he was working with an independent media, and all of those were shut down. Now his goal is to travel to the US. His financial goal is to get $10 000. He cannot use most social medias, and his bank account is mostly exclusive to Russia, so the only place he can accept donations is the site donationalerts. The link to that is in the descreption and pinned comment of his video. He explains his situation in detail.
youtube
I really really wish i could help him, but i cant at the moment, so im doing all i can, and that is spreading the word. Tag big blogs that you think would maybe help.

When ideology gets in the way of solidarity
>>>What follows below is, in my opinion, a very critical read for the Anarchist movement. If you are an Anarchist, I hope that you take a moment to read this statement by our Black Cross comrades in Belarus.<<<
Tumblr media
In the 15 years of our collective’s existence, we have gone through several major political crises. During elections, protests, and political repression, the Belarusan anarchist movement has not met with isolation from its comrades. People from all over the world showed solidarity in the struggle against the Belarusan dictatorship and for a just and free society: from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. During this period, we only rarely encountered people who tried to explain to us that the Belarusan regime is not really that bad, and that all the horrors are just liberal propaganda. Since 2014, we have met anti-fascists or anarchists abroad who somehow believed Russian propaganda about the LDNR. But until 2022, we rarely met “experts” on Eastern Europe who confidently told us about a reality that existed only in the realm of political propaganda. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the situation changed very dramatically. Suddenly, within the anarchist and anti-fascist movements, there appeared “specialists” of Eastern European realities who completely denied the facts in favor of a simplistic model of the world. Many discussions of the war as a conflict between NATO and Russia or the fascist regime in Kiev fundamentally ignore objective facts. In this text we would like to discuss how this attitude affects the development of international solidarity and how some anarchists choose to distort reality in the struggle for ideological supremacy.
International of Anarchist Federations (IFA)
In eastern Europe, few people have heard of the IFA, an international anarchist organization founded in 1968 in Italy. At the time of this writing, the federation consisted of groups from Europe, Asia, Central and South America. At one point it even included organizations from the former Soviet Union, including Belarus. With the decline of the Federation of Anarchists of Belarus (FAB), our group became the IFA contact organization in the country. For many years we worked closely together: we visited comrades in different regions and together with other organizations we held infotours in separate countries. Up until 2022, we hardly had any serious political conflicts with IFA member organizations. The invasion of Ukraine has greatly changed the attitude of many International members towards our group. One of the reasons lies in our initiative to hold informal online meetings with International members on the war in Ukraine: the main goal at that stage was to convey objective information about what was happening and to actively combat Russian disinformation. Such meetings were to take place every two weeks. Already at the second meeting, we encountered serious problems when some of the International’s participants started repeating Russian propaganda about NATO, fascism in Ukraine, and so on, almost word for word. The series of online meetings ended rather quickly. On the one hand, the unwillingness of many anarchists to accept objective facts hindered them. On the other hand, some of the International’s participants insisted on formalizing such meetings, which we regarded as a blatant attempt to “bureaucratize” inconvenient information. We encountered the problem of “selective bureaucracy” a year later, when at one of the formal meetings of the International we proposed to invite comrades from Ukraine and Russia to explain the situation in these regions and the possibility of interacting directly with local activists, rather than with information from social networks and dubious groups. The participation of anarchists from Ukraine and Russia was blocked, and after several months of constant attempts to exclude people from Belarus, Ukraine and Russia from discussions of the war in Ukraine, we decided to withdraw from the International.
This situation was the first in a long line of building barriers around the topic of the war in Ukraine by certain “expert” groups that prefer the same simplistic picture of the world. Unfortunately, in some countries, our former internationalist comrades play an active role in maintaining the myth of “NATO against Russia”. The conflict within the IFA has shown us how fragile international ties are in the face of government disinformation programs, ideological dogmatism, and the unwillingness of many anarchists to understand complex international conflicts.
Book Fair and Congress
In the summer of 2023, we applied to participate in the Ljubljana Anarchist Book Fair, where we gave a presentation about repression in Belarus, with a separate block discussing how the war in Ukraine affects anarchists’ political struggles. When we saw the “no war propaganda” signs, our collective members were somewhat confused, knowing that the position of the organizers of the book fair on the war is ambiguous. We never realized who the posters were aimed at, although at one point we were worried that we would be told to remove brochures with interviews about the war from various anarchists in Ukraine and Russia. At the event we met, among others, comrades who had previously organized benefit events and presentations for ABC. Some of them refused to talk to us at all, while others preferred to communicate in the format of political statements rather than dialog. At the anarchist congress in St. Imier we began to speak openly about our fears that our political position on the war in Ukraine was affecting solidarity with repressed comrades inside Belarus: the more we try to question positions that do not take into account the situation in the region, the more “untouchable” we become in certain branches of the anarchist movement, which used to be ready to provide diverse support to comrades from the BUR (Belarus, Ukraine, Russia). In Switzerland we also became aware that we started to be considered as militarists and supporters of the war in Ukraine, although nobody directly expressed it to us. We learned about this perception almost a year after our trip to Switzerland.
Partner organizations
Before touching on our “commitment to militarism”, we would like to briefly discuss how Western anarchists and leftists find “alternative” partners in the region to confirm their political views. In the situation with Ukraine, the main partner of the antimilitarists was the odious media group “Assembly” from Kharkiv, which prefers to disassociate itself from the rest of the anarchist movement and actively cooperates with the group of Vadim Damye, a Russian historian who has been spreading the myth of a fascist Ukraine since 2014. If you want to know more about the “Assembly”, ask Ukrainian anarchists. In the case of Belarus, the situation became quite strange, as anti-militarists and pacifists suddenly started working with the controversial Olga Karach, a “professional” NGO activist with a dubious background, which was already entrenched before the events of 2020. People familiar with the political environment of Belarus have heard about Karach, and understand the danger of political interaction with this person: disinformation for Olga serves as one of the tools for building political power and raising money. It turns out that the organization “Our House”, which Olga leads, is actively involved in creating a myth about a mass movement of deserters inside Belarus, who want to leave the country in an attempt to avoid mobilization. In November 2022, there were allegedly already tens of thousands of such evaders [2]. How many such souls Karach sold to the Western left remains a mystery to this day. Using the example of the above-mentioned organization, it becomes obvious that in their search for new “partners” in Eastern Europe, leftists and anti-authoritarians are ready to work with dubious figures, as long as they confirm the facts necessary for their picture of the world. The criterion of trust becomes not an attempt to understand the real situation in the region and a desire to support the struggle, but rather interaction with those who confirm already existing misconceptions. With this approach, some activist groups risk falling into the trap of fraudsters primarily interested in the money side of things. The inability or unwillingness to delve into certain issues makes anarchists easy prey for those who traditionally “dipshit” liberal and center-left political forces.
Does ABC-Belarus support the war in Ukraine?
A few months ago, ABC-Belarus applied to participate in a book fair in Berlin with an info table and/or presentation [3]. The organizers of the fair stated that they planned to pay much attention to the issue of the war in Ukraine. The response to our inquiry came categorically negative and contained the following wording: “…You are in favor of the war in Ukraine, so we have nothing more to say…” And it is obvious that this perception of anarchists from the BUR resisting Russian imperialism continues to strengthen in the minds of a part of the anarchist movement. Instead of critical analysis and attempts to build a dialog, we again and again run into a wall of blatant political ignorance. As a result, ABC-Belarus will not go to the fair in Berlin (our last talk in the city concerning the situation with repression in the country happened before the full-scale invasion began), and the organizers of the event will be able to conduct debates in an atmosphere of general “consent”, having secured themselves from the opposition of people who directly carry out activities in the BUR region. As the war in Ukraine continues and Western activists become “tired” of the topic, we expect this approach to our collective to only increase, and “weeds” of misinformation and outright lies to grow in the place of solidarity. We will not knock on the closed rooms of social centers in the west and try to tell the story of our struggle or repression against our comrades. We have plenty of room to direct our energies as it is. But do the people who censor solidarity groups realize that they would then have to take it upon themselves to support the repressed comrades with their own forces, if they are really committed to the ideas of internationalism and anarchism? It is then also the responsibility of such groups to inform the broader anarchist movement about the repression and to raise money for basic support for those who continue the struggle in prison. In turn, we want to express our gratitude to those who are still supporting our collective and our comrades in Belarus, in Ukraine and in other Eastern European countries. Despite all challenges and obstacles, it is you who show an example of international solidarity and readiness to stand shoulder to shoulder in the most difficult moments of our struggle, no matter how many kilometers and walls separate us!

Winter is coming, which means 🇺🇦 needs our help more than ever. This time, to stay warm.
Volunteers from Kremenchuk (people I know personally who have been volunteering since 2014) are supplying the troops with trench stoves, perfectly handy in such circumstances.
You can read about the initiative (using Google translate), or watch a video on YouTube.
Last week the first hundred has been collectively funded. Next goal is to have twice as much 🥹
On the pic attached you can see the first forty “baby stoves” that are ready to be sent to fronlines as well as my dad, one of those volunteers.
The goal: 85,000 UAH (2,300 USD).
👉 You can donate here.
👉 Or to my kofi.
Thank you! Slava Ukraini!

I remember when 2 years ago, 24th February 2022, all lives of ukrainian people changed overnight. It was horrible.
I am a girl living in Italy, studying there too, but I am ukrainian. I remember so vividly what happened the night before the war. I was scrolling on tumblr, and I remember reposting a photo of My Little Pony right before going to bed. It was late, around midnight (pretty late for a 14 y.o girl).
I woke up the next day around 6 AM with a feeling of dread and alarm bells going off in my mind. "Something's wrong" I remember thinking. I pretended to be asleep and listened to my mother talk to her cousin, who lived in Kyiv. "Don't stay there" she said, "get away from there, it's dangerous".
I wasn't stupid, I understood what had begun. I got up and started texting all my friends in Ukraine. Some of them were all right (physically speaking), all of them were scared. My best friend told me she woke up due to explosions, and then the teachers sent everyone home (because she lived in a college).
I remember crying at school when my classmate made an out of pocket "joke". She said 'Oh, where did you come out from? The bombs?'. I was heartbroken because I thought of her as my friend.
I couldn't focus in class. I texted everyone I knew to make sure they were okay, and luckily my teachers didn't say anything about me being on the phone.
That day was all about news, news, news. On TV, on Telegram, on YouTube, all we listened to and read about were news.
I remember every single detail, as every other ukrainian, of that day.

another note: if you argue that "war is not the answer! ukraine should solve the invasion diplomatically!", you:
a) show your ignorance about 8 years of fruitless one-sided attempts to find a diplomatic resoultion, during which russia hasn't fullfilled a single commitment and ukrainian army was left in situation when they were constantly shot at but weren't allowed to respond (not to mention not being able to rescue ukrainian citizens on the occupied territories being thrown in torture camps)
b) show your ignorance about how diplomacy works at all. the way the military campaign unravels dictates how the diplomatic negotiations will go. the more russian army suffers, the more likely their command will show "gestures of good will" like zmiinyi island.
and no, ceding ukrainian territory is not an option. russia is commiting a genocide of ukrainian people, their goal is to erase every trace of our people. by pressuring us to give up land you are supporting the genocide of ukrainian people. by pressuring your government to stop sending us weapons you are supporting the genocide of ukrainian people.

One person sent me this post and I searched a bit, so if anyone saw it too, just wanna make clear what is really going on.
This is a footage of warrior exchange between Ukraine and Wagner group, which occurred on 26.05.2023. You can find posts and video in "The Telegraph", "Wall Street Journal" and many more websites. During this exchange we returned 106 Ukrainian warriors.
On this person's example you see that you really need to educate yourself :)
UPD. I added screenshots from the sources I mentioned, so you can see the proof right away

Our military say there is a big chance of another massive air-raid happening tomorrow — it can be the biggest so far, meaning that I can be offline for a week or longer. We received advice from the government today that we should avoid using our bathrooms in case of a lengthy black-out, meeting our needs by using special packages and then burying them outside. Obviously, there will be no heating, no water, no shops accepting credit cards, no chance to work because it’s impossible without Internet and cell connection. We won’t hear air raids alarms. We’ll be cut off from the rest of the world, plunged in total darkness, in more ways than one.
That’s why I decided to make my monthly post earlier. I want to address it to Ruzzians (people who support the war) — not because I want or expect them to reply, or even care, but just because I feel like doing it. Because I’ve been watching my strong city, my strong country fight for survival for months; because today is my father’s birthday and I can’t be with him - I spent 9 months separated from him, and I want to voice some thoughts that have been living in my head.
So, Ruzzians… do you know that when you cheer upon hearing about your terrorist government hitting Ukrainian critical infrastructure, you’re being happy over a genocide of the most vulnerable and the least protected slices of population in particular? People like me, they’ll be fine — unless your missile hits our apartments again, whether by itself or from being intercepted unsuccessfully. The young and the able will find heating centers. They’ll find a way to survive, to make fire, to cook food, and naturally, they’ll hate you and your country with every fibre of their being. No one is going to protest against our government — the only protests will start if it decides to make peace with you because you don’t make peace with terrorists. Ever.
Do you know who’ll suffer most? The elderly and the disabled who live on top floors, especially those without families nearby. The elevators won’t work, there will be no chance for them to call someone. These people will be trapped in their cold apartments, unable to care for themselves, unable to leave. Some of them will end up crawling to their windows and throwing themselves out, like it happened in Mariupol.
Do you know who else will suffer? People who need electricity to survive. This includes people in hospitals, people who use chargeable medical devices, people who need constant supplies from drug stores. The same applies to vet clinics. I have a sick pigeon. I have a cat who needs surgery. I am unable to help them because your terrorist attacks have led to numerous black-outs that damaged the necessary equipment.
Do you know whose deaths you’re cheering on? The death of countless homeless animals who rely on heating in the buildings to stay warm. These are cats. These are birds. These are dogs. You are also enthusiastically supporting their starvation since during the black-outs, most shops cannot work, and those that do quickly become empty. Few people are going to be able to feed these homeless creatures when there is nothing to buy.
Do you know that you are encouraging the poverty and the loss of jobs for people like me? People whose works you might enjoy, who only want to live normally and be left alone? I’m a Russian-speaking Ukrainian. And I hate you. I want to have nothing to do with you or your country, like millions of other Ukrainians, including those who were loyal to Russia in the past.
Your support of these deaths and this suffering made you as complicit as your government. It made sane Russian people feel scared for their safety, preventing them from voicing their thoughts openly. The hundreds of thousands of your soldiers who mindlessly come to another country to kill its people, bomb its cities, torture its animals, destroy everything people have worked-for for their entire lives, tear families apart, steal years of life from the survivors because of all the mental traumas — they represent you. And this representation is monstrous.
You are not even fighting the military. You are fighting civilians first and foremost with your missile terror attacks. You are especially fighting the most undefended groups of people. You delight in taking the smallest bits of comfort and joy from our lives, leaving thousands of ugly, happy messages celebrating our pain and fear. I don’t know what you are. In my mind, to be a human, you need to have at least some humanity, and I don’t see any of it in you. You remind me of bloodthirsty, emotionless robots who can only be happy when others are suffering.
This post is not for you. It’s for me. Because I love life and yet you make me want to die sometimes just so that I could escape the world that I’m forced to share with you. Instead of doing that, I decided to express my thoughts and feelings because writing always makes me feel better. The day you pay for what you’ve done and supported is the day I want to live to see.
And now about all the wonderful people who support me, who have been helping me keep my sanity throughout this horrible year: thank you. You’ve done so much for me that I will never be able to feel grateful enough. Thank you those who comment on my fics, who ask me questions, who leave words of support and who message me; thank you those who support me financially on Patreon — I especially appreciate it now, when I might go days without a chance to do my job due to black-outs.
If everything becomes unbearable, I will leave my city, but this is my home. I have obligations here. I have homeless cats and my lovely wild pigeons to feed. I have two fathers and a brother who I don’t want to leave behind, so I’ll stay for as long as I can.

You say, you know everything about me, even the walls have eyes here. Well, who you’ve learned it from, give him my shirt, the white one You're just like me, unbowed (Troubles said "hello", joy said "peace and love") But there where I pushed myself into, there’s neither psychologist nor shaman After everything we've been through, to start all over again from scratch! Heaven-heaven, you hear, heaven, I'm earth, because it's already the day when We're going off on a scream and I don't know you - I'm used to it. If you can go on without me, just tell me when I'll get over it
But here, right here An empty corner has appeared between my ribs I was screaming, begging, praying, It’s sadly Because you're both hell and a new heaven to me.
We made a mistake once - and all to no avail So her pencil was broken with my notebook   Yes, I'm strong, I'm free, but I'm empty Can you tell me when I'll get over it?
In the middle of the quiet night, sweet dreams are broadcast to us, And we didn’t want to watch how the flowers began to grow out of clay We hoped to get rid of the dirt, hold hands and get out of that I'm sorry, but I won't grow steel flowers out of the mud anymore
