everyone has to be a little less mean to themselves about not reading enough books. letting go of reading as a pride thing is the first step to relearning how to actually enjoy reading for pleasure again. it's totally fine to start with a novella or with a comic or with a field guide or with literature meant for someone younger instead of being mad at yourself for not grokking ulysses in a week. just vary your diet and you'll be good.
i'm a literature scholar, i'm the one who has to be strict with myself about page counts and citations. you all? do what you want, just read and have fun.
#seeing so much “no one reads anymore! i don't read anymore!” doom and gloom everywhere#stop that! go read a 50 page novella as slowly as you want and sleep soundly at night.#none of you are stupid. fake concept.#however: many of you are wrong#victor text#also: i was assigned ulysses. had to read it in a week#it was basically fine as long as i used the big annotated guide of What Aspects Of Contemporaneous Irish Culture Were Being Referenced Here#with a big helping of 'oh okay that would have been impossible to intuit on my own i'm so glad i looked it up'

i was wondering how and when the name teukros became teucer (specifically with an S sound) in english, because i don't know any other language that doesn't call him some variation of teukros/tevkros/teucro.
but of course it turns i can blame the romans! again!
#'teucer' is fine by me (and admittedly the first thing that stood out to me about him when reading the iliad. li'l TYOOSER)#but it's the cutesy high school nickname to the dramatic velar plosive of TEUKROS#though the pronunciation guide at the back of my mitchell translation says 'teucer' can be spoken with an S *or* a K sound#i guess in the way of like. that's a later constructed name so say it however you like#obviously i'm not a greek name purist. i use romanized spellings a ton on this blog#but i generally steer clear of the wholly changed romanized names like ulysses and pollux

Eva's crow motif & Wolfgang's sheep motif - the relevance of animals in Project: Eden's Garden going forwards
As a disclaimer, Wolfgang of course has two animal motifs - the sheep and the wolf. In this specific post I will only cover the former as I believe it is most relevant in relation to Eva and this first chapter in general. I personally think that his wolf motif will become more apparent as the story progresses and Wolfgang continues to haunt the narrative. As for Eva - many of the things attributed to crows also apply to ravens and some have absolutely pointed out the associations ravens specifically have (Aesop's fables, the Tower of London myth, Edgar Allen Poe) that relate to Eva. I will not be touching on that in this post and am instead focusing on the different species of crow.
With that out of the way - major spoilers for chapter one of Project: Eden's Garden ahead!
& This is a text only version of my tiktok post, if you are more visual and would prefer to read it there!
WOLFGANG & THE SHEEP
The most blatant is that sheep hold great Biblical significance not least because Jesus Christ himself is referred to as the "Lamb of God" and the term "sacrificial lamb" derives from exactly that in Christ's sacrifice to atone the sins of humanity. Wolfgang as a Christ-like figure being killed by Eva named after the first to sin paints the perfect picture for the commencement of the killing game.
Wolfgang is treated by the majority of the cast, barring Eva, Damon and arguably Ulysses and Wenona, as a "saviour". The most explicit example of this thinking is asserted by Desmond after Eva's trial as he refers to Wolfgang as "one of the only people who could've handled this situation" who could have "made progress on escaping". He acts as this guiding light towards salvation for them as sheep are social, flock animals, and shepherds symbols of guidance. Until he is killed and the ideas of atonement and salvation die with him, even as Diana attempts to "resurrect" his image.
"And he gave unto them commandments, that they should worship the Lord their God, and should offer the firstlings of their flocks, for an offering unto the Lord. And Adam was obedient unto the commandments of the Lord." (Bible, Moses 5:7, Adam and Eve sacrifice a lamb to God)
If we take Tozu's role in the academy and killing game to be equivalent to that of God, then his animal motif being a ram/goat neatly links to Wolfgang's sheep and Christ symbolism. Tozu is the father, Wolfgang is the son, and Eva (as the bird) is the Holy Spirit and all three are bound together as one in this murder case that implicates them all. Not to mention how Eva literally sacrifices Wolfgang, the lamb, to Tozu, the God.
Shakespeare is an interesting perspective to take into account considering Tozu's theatrical nature and the consistent references to theatre within P:EG (EG: Tozu referencing Horace in the prologue). In Shakespeare's plays, sheep are often symbolic of vulnerability and used as a means of "peripeteia" - the turning point where the narrative's tone darkens. Wolfgang's murder, the first murder, abides by this perfectly. His death symbolises the death of any semblance of order and justice within this situation and opens the way for the killing game to truly begin.
"We were as twinn'd lambs that did frisk i' the sun, And bleat the one at the other: what we changed Was innocence for innocence." (William Shakespeare, The Winter's Tale, 1.2.85-7)
While lambs are symbolic of sacrifice in many cultures, they are not entirely passive and become aggressive when cornered, usually by gearing up to ram or buck. This reflects how aggressive Wolfgang becomes when drugged and essentially herded in a corner by Eva, leading him to lash out at Diana. Wolfgang is the only character whose animal motif is an animal classed as livestock which is another way upon his sacrificial lamb symbolism that he was destined to die - he has been slaughtered and his metaphorical fleece has been repurposed for Diana to wear instead.
EVA & THE CROW
Firstly, crows tend to be seen either solitary or paired in nature. While they can be social animals, this is not the trend. Instantly this relates to how Eva has endured isolation and exclusion throughout her life, including in the academy. Damon is the first person she forms any sort of bond with and from the moment they wake up in the same area they are cemented as a "pair". P:EG overall has "pairs" as an extremely prominent theme due to the entire concept of Eden.
Her isolation can connect also to how crows have been observed to hold grudges. Eva's history as a victim of bullying instilled in her a victim complex and "me vs them" mentality where she takes any sort of negative reaction as "proof" that people are out to get her - something her Ultimate peers triggered with their mocking of her actual talent and confusion over her lies alike. Her targeting of Wolfgang was based in a grudge born from him singling her out as untrustworthy and how she believed he was turning everyone against her with his influence. Crows are opportunistic creatures - Eva saw the opportunity to get rid of Wolfgang and frame Diana in one fell swoop and took it. Much of her plan relied on that opportunity.
General populations deem crows largely as pests and they are, as a result, vulnerable to hunting by humans which ties into not only how Eva was and believed she was viewed by her peers, but also in how she was being "hunted" by Tozu every moment she did not kill after claiming the perk. That traitor's perk giving Eva access to the cameras essentially provided her with a "bird's eye view" of the happenings around the academy - something made further apparent by how she was watching from right above the murder as it happened.
Crows are known widely as thieves much like magpies both in the sense of them stealing prey from predators and the reputation they have gained in many human cultures for stealing precious items for their nests. It does not feel unintentional, then, that her plan saw her steal from her peers' rooms ("nests") to kill her prey. Additionally, crows have been reported to cause power outages through contact with power lines/poles which directly parallels the blackout during Eva's murdering of Wolfgang.
Most glaringly is how crows hold the familiar associations with evil and the Devil in Gael culture; in the 18th century, shepherds in the Scottish highlands would make offerings to hooded crows ("hoodies") to deter them from attacking sheep.
"In Pennant's Tour in Scotland (1771) there is described a curious ceremony in which offerings were made by Scottish herdsmen to the hooded crow, eagle and other enemies of sheep to induce them to spare the flock. (...) The crow killed lambs and annoyed sickly sheep." - Ernest Ingersoll, 1923, Birds in legend, fable and folklore, p.165
This blatantly links to Eva's murder victim being Wolfgang, whose animal motif is literally a sheep to her crow. The only "offering" made to Eva was Diana's extension of friendship, but at that point the crow had already taken flight. The hooded crows indigenous to the highlands would migrate down to the more temperate southern England during winter where they gained the local name "Royston crows" due to how they feasted on the carcasses of sheep in the sheep fields of Royston, Herfordshire.
In Shintoism, crows are associated with the idea of rebirth after tragedy strikes due to the image of them feasting on the slain after great battles. Much like Wolfgang's "Lamb of God" symbolism, this will likely come to fruition in Eva's presence never truly dying, that she will be remembered after death, and that Diana will "resurrect" her image just as she is attempting to do with Wolfgang.
So: HOW MUCH SHOULD WE CONSIDER THE ANIMAL MOTIFS GOING FORWARDS?
The plain and simple answer is that it depends and must be applied on a case by case basis. Our analysis cannot start and end with the animal motifs nor can it hinge on them as they are one angle of analysis among many - most prominently Biblical allusions and characterisation and, above all, how all of these aspects link to each other. For instance, you cannot just say "this character will kill because their animal motif is a predator" because there are far more layers to it than that.
The animal motifs are important and should not be disregarded as Diana, Eva and Wolfgang have proven - they just cannot be the sole point of analysis at a stage where we have everyone's characterisation to consider in conjunction with them.
For example, while Wolfgang's sheep motif is absolutely relevant and noteworthy, I don't personally think there is as much to say about it as Eva's crow motif based on what we have so far. How it acts as a springboard for Wolfgang's Biblical allusions especially RE his Christ symbolism is the most notable element of it so far in my opinion. And this could very well be because he has two animal motifs for us to sink our teeth into - I just have not found enough with him and the wolf to warrant a full discussion yet.
My thoughts on his wolf motif becoming more relevant later on in the story relates in part to his name, Wolfgang, meaning "travelling wolf" and being taken from an actual German saint in Christianity - which connects deftly to how Wolfgang is already being treated postmortem. In his book "Teutonic Mythology", Jacob Grimm defines the name as one held by a victorious hero. Overall, I think the wolf beneath sheep's clothing is yet to be truly revealed.
On the whole, Wolfgang and Eva prove without a doubt how important and relevant everyone's animal motifs will be beyond mere aesthetics - as does Diana's speech at the end of the chapter! What must be taken into account when looking into what everyone's motifs could mean is their individual characterisations and other elements of their characters. The animal motifs are only one piece of the puzzle, but they are a necessary piece in my opinion.
Thank you for reading please feel free to add more thoughts! I have no doubt I missed stuff, especially in regards to Wolfgang's sheep motif. There is absolutely something to say about him and being an undesirable “black sheep” in relation to his background but those thoughts aren’t fleshed out enough at the moment.

hey guys you ever think about how since ulysses had his tribe assimilated into the legion he was never allowed to grow his hair out so he couldn't practice the twists? and about how, when he finally got the chance to let it get longer, he realised he barely remembers how to do it? and now that he's alone there's no one to guide him, and he's left carrying the half-forgotten remains of his culture like an incomplete set of shards of a vase broken long, long ago?

(P:EG THEORY(IES) ABOUT ULYSSES)
Spoilers below
(THEORY) Ulysses Won't Be The Next Victim
After the first chapter of Project: Eden's Garden, many have speculated that Ulysses Wilhelm, the Ultimate Historian, will be the next victim to be murdered in the killing game.
At first, I was right on board. The signs are all there (He was very prominent in the first trial, he had a Rebuttal Showdown in the first chapter, and his overall character seems to suggest that he won't put up much of a fight), it's only natural to come to this conclusion.
Until, I came to a conclusion of my own.
If my username seems familiar (and you're not following me or a mutual or mine or anything lmao), you might remember the post I made about how obvious the first chapter killer and victim should have been (I remember it anyway, I get like for it every one to five business days lmao).
In the post above, I explained that by analyzing Eva Tsunaka's and Wolfgang Akire's names and animal motifs, their fates were made obvious to the audience.
Shortly after making that post, I researched the names of the surviving cast and their significance in the Bible in an attempt to find another hint. Not counting a few exceptions (Damon's nickname from Cassidy being Damo, an anagram for Adom aka Adam, Diana's name meaning heavenly and Kai's name being vaguely similar to Cain), I came up empty-handed.
Several months later, I'd revisit an old WIP of mine from an entirely different fandom: Percy Jackson. Long story short, when I was like 15, I came up with an idea for a next generation fic, but I couldn't think of a name for a set of twins by Percabeth. I then remembered that Odysseus was Athena's (the mother of Annabeth Chase) favorite hero, and looked for names similar to that for their children.
And I came across the name: Ulysses. Ulysses is Odysseus's name in the Latin variant of The Odyssey.
Suddenly the wheels started turning.
The Bible wasn't the only story with mortal characters interacting with omnipotent beings. In The Odyssey, Odysseus (or Ulysses) is guided by Athena, a virgin goddess of wisdom, strategy, and much more. Similarly to the cast of Project: Eden's Garden, many Greek gods have representative animals.
And Athena's animal is an owl, just like Ulysses Wilhelm.
If we're to assume that Ulysses's name will be an indicator of his fate in Project: Eden's Garden, this can mean one of two things.
He'll either live to the end and survive the peril and hardships of the killing game, much like his namesake...
Or, he'll commit murder in an attempt to survive, similarly to his namesake as well.
Me personally, I'm suspecting now that Ulysses will be a murderer. I could see his inability to smell being the one last piece of evidence to damn him further, which Damon could use against his new rival, Diana, who would definitely argue that "someone like Ulysses couldn't have done it because he was so helpful last time".
Then again, the P:EG team could've predicted that someone would've thought of this and purposefully created Ulysses the way that they did to throw us off. I suppose only time will tell.

Howdy, I just found your blog and I really like your art and headcanons for Legion stuff! I was especially impressed with your post about your cosplay-turned-subgroup of Caesar's Legion, that's so creative and neat.
I'm actually getting ready to start a Legion playthrough as a female character, and it'll be my first playthrough ever where I don't immediately dynamite Vulpes to gristle lol. Do you have any tips or suggestions yo enhance the experience?
I really like your art, hope you keep posting. Have a good day!
Thank you so much! Legion run is quite short so usually whenever I play Legion I drag the gameplay a lot and only visit Caesar when I exhaust the main and side quests, even pretending to be a good friend of the NCR (since they have most of the quests) until I switch at the last moment. If you already know the game quite well and you don't mind checking a guide here and there, I'd recommend the very rewarding thing that is trying to do all of Caesar's favors before you talk to him, though you can do it without a guide just evilmaxxing and sabotaging all of NCR's plans and structures. Caesar is a VERY grateful guy and doesn't shy away from acknowledging your efforts when you do your work well and that's simply very satisfying. One thing you shouldn't miss is a very quirky female-legion-exclusive exchange with Ulysses in Lonesome Road, and in general I too use the Legion's misogyny as a fuel to prove all of them wrong :P You don't necessarily have to play as a bad guy, and you can go around in disguise and pretending you aren't siding with the savage slavers, but it's also fun to see how much different people tolerate you as an unapologetic Legion-siding courier. Do your best to do the quests of all the companions before you side with the Legion since many of them will just drop you after you take such heinous stance. Have fun and girlboss around the wasteland!!

I have thoughts and feelings about Quixis showing up for Rae and Ulysses, let me dump them here...
• This is the second time that Quixis has shown up when Icarus isn't around.
And even though the events were similar, this one feels worse.
This time, Quixis slowly guided the way/direction), almost struggled to communicate (used 1 block instead of a bunch to say yes/no), hesitantly confirmed that Icarus was in danger.
• Quixis communicating when Rae is around makes me think that Rae is somehow involved with Quixis or maybe, Quixis' Rae has something to do with it
• Quixis giving a direction rather than wack spots like they did last time, probably relates to the fact that they go dormant around Fable
• Quixis talking to others - especially in this case - just seems like a last resort.
The World Port is dying and the decay is spreading. Icarus won't listen and help deal with it - because they don't want to - and they still don't trust Quixis.
The decay on Quixis could be worse at this point, I can't imagine the pain they're probably in. So getting to Rae probably took a lot.
• Quixis simply giving a direction, cause they can't go near Fable, but also letting them know that it's not safe to do so right now.
That long pause after Rae asked if Icarus was safe. Then he had to plead for an answer.
I feel like Rae was asking if Icarus was safe at the current moment - with Fable around and his plan.
And Quixis answered no to them not being safe with Fable or in general as the WorldPort is collapsing, which could basically mean the end of the world...
Quixis gave them a direction, that has to be good enough for now. They can't exactly do much on their own right now.
• If Icarus finds out that Quixis snitched their location, I feel that they're going to spiral more. Cause they think Quixis is with them, maybe not on their side but they've been with them, so how dare they go to Rae when they're "trying to fix everything"
• Also Ulysses refusing to let Rae go around Quixis stuff even though he only knows it as this violent thing that can hurt people I just- the lad I love him.
• Him fidgeting with the necklace i-😭
Thank you for reading my brain dump

Day 16: stargazing
Masterlist flufftober 🎀
Reblog if you liked it!
You let out a sigh of satisfaction when you finished preparing the back of your father's pickup truck, after several minutes and a lot of effort to stretch the blankets enough. There was a mat, a duvet, sheets, and plenty of pillows so the two of you would be comfortable on the date you had prepared for your boyfriend. Spencer had told you about a meteor shower that occurred every ten million years and that on this occasion would be visible in the region, so he believed it would be a sin not to take advantage of the night to see it together and, in the process, spend a nice time between you. You seemed very excited about the idea and had prepared food to spend the hours that you were going to wait and, of course, a thermos full of coffee to share.
“How does it look?”
“It's perfect,” he replied happily.
He had been busy reviewing some celestial maps that he carried with him, under the light of a flashlight that you had in the trunk. You were in a remote section of the countryside and without all the light pollution of the city the stars could be seen in their maximum splendor, which had you completely fascinated. You had never done an activity like this and you knew how much Spencer was excited about astronomy, so the idea that he wanted to share that with you made you feel special.
You climbed up to the space you had arranged and he immediately imitated you, where both of you sat with your back comfortably leaning on a pair of pillows. You pulled a blanket to cover your legs and those of your boyfriend, who soon intertwined them to shorten the distance.
“I assume you know the constellations, right?”
"I do! At this time of year several can be seen. Like that one over there that is shaped like a trapezoid with a tail, do you see it?” he asked, pointing to a specific point in the sky. You had to admit that you weren't the best at finding shapes in celestial bodies, but you tried with all your might, until you finally understood what he was referring to “That's the Big Dipper, it's the third largest constellation and it's visible for all year round in the northern hemisphere, in addition to being one of the best known and most important in astronomical history. It has eight stars, one of them visible only in very clear places like this and they are called Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Phecda, Merak, and Dubhe”
“There is a myth in Greek mythology about it, isn't there?”
“Yes, Greek mythology considered Ursa Major to be the bear that Callisto had been turned into by Artemis after being seduced by Zeus. Homer mentions the Bear in Canto V of the Odyssey, in which Ulysses tries in vain to be guided by her to return to Ithaca, his land”
“Wow,” you sighed, as you continued to look up to admire the stars your boyfriend was telling you about.
“When I was a child, I asked for a telescope as a birthday gift and this was the first constellation I learned because if you follow a line a little higher you can find the polar star… that one over there, do you see it?”
"I see it"
“That star serves to guide you because it always points north, so no matter where you are you can find your way if you find it. That way I imagined that whenever I was lost, I could come back home” he confessed to you, with a nostalgic smile on his face.
You stopped seeing the celestial sky to focus on him and you couldn't stop yourself from kissing him when you saw the sparkle in his eyes watching you with enthusiasm. The kiss was gentle and short, just as if you wanted to reward him for his eloquence, and then you settled under his arm with your head resting on his soft chest.
“You probably know a few thousand facts about the stars, or am I wrong?”
“I have never counted them, but from the books I have read I can assure you that it is an approximate amount”
“Well, we still have a few hours until the rain starts so start spitting them all out. I want Sagan to feel threatened in the afterlife by my knowledge of the universe at dawn” you joked and the soft laugh he let out above your head was like music to your ears.
Spencer talked and talked and you listened attentively to everything he had to tell you, only interrupting him to ask questions or to ask him to eat a little or try his cup of coffee. In the same way, you were changing positions as the hours went by, sometimes lying down, sitting, other times he with his head resting on your shoulder, and you even went so far as to sit on his lap, with your back comfortably against his torso while that he spoke kindly in your ear.
"You are tired? Bored?"
“None of that, love” you smiled. Right now you were lying in front of each other, with him absentmindedly tangling a lock of your hair in his finger “It's the most interesting date I've ever had in my life.”
“And it's going to get better, because it's the scheduled time for the main show,” he murmured in a theatrical voice, while he sat down and helped you with one hand so that you were in the same position.
He hadn't lied, because after a few minutes he saw the first star crossing the sky. You gasped in surprise like a little girl would, and your shock only intensified when another star sped past. Suddenly dozens of stars imitated the first ones and your smile grew as a new one appeared.
"Look how beautiful!" you squealed, shaking your shoulder excitedly at your lover, who was smiling the same way you were. “It’s wonderful.”
Spencer felt the need to hug you from the side to enjoy the view and the company at the same time, while you continued to look at the sky with fascination.
“We are experiencing a unique event in our space-time,” he whispered, the words slightly muffled by his lips in your hair. “And… I wanted to give you something equally unique.”
Suddenly you felt his hand take yours and then a metallic object sliding down your ring finger, forcing you to stop looking at the sky to look at him, with an expression of nothing but shock.
“Spencer, what—?”
“It's not what you think,” he hastened to say. You looked at the jewel and realized that it was a delicate ring that was completely smooth and silver in color. “It is a promise ring, it is used to… well, to promise a loved one that at some point it will be replaced by one that involves a greater commitment," he explained to you, suddenly becoming a nervous wreck "I thought about giving it to you today because I love you so much and I wanted you to know that I would like to go further with you, if you accept me”
"Darling…"
"Do you like it?" he insisted and you were forced to drown his fears with a prolonged kiss on the lips.
“Of course it does. I love you so, so much and you don't know how happy this makes me, I wouldn't want to be with anyone else in the vast universe. I'm serious"
That was enough of an answer for him and then you settled down again to enjoy the rest of the astronomical phenomenon, knowing that you would only be able to forget that night when the time necessary to witness another of those meteor showers had passed.
