The best way to unclog a clogged bathtub drain depends on where the clog is located and what tools you have available. Most clogs in the bathtub are located in the upper part of the drain, in the crosshairs of the drain basket or in the shoe directly under the drain basket. Hair and soap scum regularly accumulate there, and a little manual labor is all that is needed to clear this type of clog. For deeper clogs in the drain pipe, there are two options, and it depends more on the tools you have available.

Remove the hair from the crosshairs in your drain basket. You can make an effective hair removal tool by untangling a wire coat hanger and bending the end into a hook with needle nose pliers. Insert the hook between the crosshairs and pull out any hair or soap residue that has become trapped. Nearly 80 percent of bathtub clogs start at the drain basket.

Submerge the drain for deeper clogs. Remove the overflow cover by loosening the screws with a screwdriver, then pull the overflow plug out of the overflow tube. Stuff a rag into the overflow tube to prevent air from getting into the tube when you plunge the drain. Fill the tub with enough water to cover the bottom of the plug, then make several up and down movements. The air and water pressure is usually enough to clear the clog. Flush the drain with hot water and replace the overflow plug and cover.

Guide the drain through the overflow pipe. Remove both the overflow cover and the plug and insert a drain snake into the pipe. Fill the tub about a quarter full with hot water. Insert the snake into the pipe as far as it will go, then turn the handle on the snake as you insert it further down the drain. Continue to feed the snake down the drain until it encounters an obstruction. This will be the blockage. Continue to turn the handle and move the snake back and forth in the drain. Eventually, the snake will dig through the obstruction and the water in the tub will begin to drain. That's when you'll know you've cleared the clog. Pull the snake out and replace the overflow plug and cover.

His thoughts otherwise occupied, Harry wasn’t really paying attention to the bathtub drain he was supposedly unclogging, until he turned the faucet to test it, and the handle broke off in his hand. Swearing loudly, he pushed to his feet and whacked his head on the wrap around shower rod.

He had reached his wit’s end. Ready to give the entire thing up as a bad job, Harry tossed the handle into the sink. He turned his back on the bathroom and rubbed the bump on the crown of his head, only to step on a loose floorboard. The wood splintered and he stumbled forward as the floor dropped out from under him.

Ugh part of why it's so hard for me to keep cleaning is the fact that my bathtub is clogged (has been since February) and I have a mental block that's preventing me from moving on until the bathroom is completely clean but I can't clean the bathtub because it drains too slow. Also it's been 7 months and it's kind of gross. I put in maintenance requests for it but they have gone ignored, and at this point I don't want to call them about it because my whole apartment is so messy and I'm afraid I'll get in trouble for it being so messy, even though it's partially their fault for ignoring my maintenance requests. But it's not going to get any cleaner until the bathtub is unclogged so it's a problem that I can't really back out of. I just have to face it.

I generally don't give myself enough credit on the weekends. Besides the fact that I bust hump all week, so if I want to put it in first or second gear Saturday and Sunday, I shouldn't be beating myself up over that, I also have a very bad habit of neglecting what I actually get done.

Like right now, by my hands, bread is making, dinner is slow cooking, dishes are washing, laundry is drying, laundry is washing, bathtub has cleaner soaking in it, and I even unclogged the kitchen drain when the carrot peels proved to be too much for it going down the disposal. It's been running a little slow for a couple days, so I'm sure there was a partial obstruction already. Super glue is setting on the broken laundry sorter, this is all after I cooked breakfast, and I'm about to put two storage tubs up into the attic, and start pressing my work shirts.

And that's a lot. This isn't "I deserve a little treat" culture, this is like I'm sitting here thinking I got fuck all done all day, when in fact I not only got to enjoy a nice sleep in, but have a pretty big list of stuff that I've accomplished, and it's not even 4:00 yet. And yesterday was the same thing.

I think we all really need to give ourselves more credit every now and again. Again, this is not "oh I completed a basic task, I deserve a little treat" business, but rather taking a minute to actually look at what you have managed to get done. And I would posit that quite more often than not, it's much more than you would give yourself credit for otherwise. 🥔
