#1.  The Earth is Online

Great Sci-fi novel with ‘alien intervention’ theme. Usually such plots has big problems with endings, but The Earth is Online managed to get a nice wrap for this very difficult theme. High-passed and absolutely interesting. What to expect: super smart MC, super sick brainteasers, unlimited flow, manly couple, twisted fairytales, uncommon special abilities. 

Warning: this novel has very weak romance line (you could probably just made it a friendship and almost nothing would be lost), but this is a great book nevertheless.

#2. Supernatural Movie Actor App

Best horror BL-novel I read. Every movie plot is stunning and quite uncommon and ingenious. Movies never has only one main theme - author interweave several into complex, deep, interesting narration with unexpected reveals and explanations. The overall plot is great too - it is type of the book where everything mentioned have a reason and place in a plot. Absolutely superior read. What to expect: super smart MC (explained in the plot), great horror stories, quite a bit of gore, unlimited flow, love between two personas in multiple personality disorder (explained beautifully in the plot), mysteries solving, manly couple.

Warning: the BL part is rather small, but really warm and nice to read.

#3.  Mist

The plot is insane - it is very smart, atmospheric and has great ending. Also it has a really strong balance of the plot and romance. There is CONSENT! And respect! FINALLY! Seriously, when ML asks MC even before hugging and they actually have conversations - even without supreme plot I would already loved this novel to the moon and back. It really hard to say anything about this novel without spoilers - it is mind-blowing. Period. What to expect: time agents, time loops, time paradox, complex plot, a bit (?) of gore, smart MC, great couple, a bit of ‘from enemies to lovers’ mood.

Warning: expect to burn a lot of your braincells to understand the time loops.

I’m gonna list mainly Chinese media in this list, though, because that’s what I consume more. And ha! How brave, asking an ND person like me for recs. Prepare to be bombarded by my rambling!

Starting off with the media currently featured in my header (excluding Blue Lock coz most of my mutuals already know that)...

1. The Earth is Online (danmei* novel)

* Danmei - Chinese boys love stories

The plot basically: Everyone on Earth is pulled into a death game.

A good intro to the unlimited flow* genre. Each instance is thrilling and complex. The boys love aspect is not much, as it focuses on plot, but it’s definitely not subtle. The characters are also quite diverse. Most UF novels just focus on the Chinese characters and revolve around what happens in China, but this one actually features those from other countries. I also like how the protagonist isn’t treated as the entire world’s savior. Other people around the world are also doing their part.

Where to read: An official English release is coming out in 2024. Translations will be done by luckkoi, the fan translator. As such, they've taken down their translations online. There's an alternate translation by @leonsrightlations , but only a few chapters are out right now. There are several completed translations online, but they're all edited mtl (machine translation). If you don't mind that, you can go google it. I recommend the one by Rainbow Mushroom. Their translations require a password, though, and you can find that on their Discord server.

* unlimited flow - Chinese genre of web novels where the protagonist is pulled into different instances to complete challenges which, if failed, would result in punishment or even death. It’s basically the death game genre, but instead of just one game, there are multiple.

2. Legend of Hei movie + Legend of Luo Xiaohei series sequel (donghua*)

(I downloaded this video from YouTube years ago. I can no longer find it there, so I’m reuploading it here…)

* Donghua – Chinese anime

A story about the young cat demon Xiao Hei and his quest to find a new home after humans destroyed his old one. Cute cat + cool powers + awesome fighting scenes + clean and crisp animation.

You can watch this on Netflix, but it’s not available in all countries. There’s an English and Japanese dub available, but I strongly recommend watching it in the original Chinese. (I can send you the full movie with English subtitles if you want). The series, which takes place after the movie, can be watched on YouTube. S1 of the series is more slice of life, but s2 is action-packed.

3. Low Tide in Twilight (BL manhwa)

That BL trope where the bottom has a mountainload of debt, while the top gives him a way out… except, not really, coz the male lead Taeju is partly the creditor, and he’s forcing Euihyun into a relationship with him in exchange for money.

Typical BL story with an initially toxic couple, but better. Complex characters, and a manhwa that relies more on the art to tell the story instead of the words. Also, Taeju gives off that same annoying but hot vibe as Kaiser. What more do you want?

4. Link Click (donghua)

The title (时光代理人) would be literally translated as “Time Agents.” I have no idea why the official English title is Link Click.

The plot basically: Two guys with time-related powers run a photography shop, where they accept orders from clients to dive back in time through a photo.

Funimation did this donghua so dirty by not promoting it more back when it aired in 2021. The English subs were also terrible.

Did you know that it used to rank #20 in MAL, surpassing MP 100 S2, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many other mainstream anime? Now, it’s ranked #41 on MAL, lower than before, but still pretty high for a donghua on MAL. That’s just how good it is.

5. White Cat Legend 2020 (donghua)

Title (大理寺日志) would be literally translated as The Journal of Dali Court.

Another cat boy donghua! Can you tell I just love cats?

The plot: Chen Shi travels from the countryside to the big city to search for his missing brother and inadvertently ends up working at Dali court under the cat guy Li Bing.

Slice of Life + Comedy + Drama + Supernatural + Mystery + Action

Baiting you with a hot guy gif~

It's a historical show btw, so expect some references to real-life events.

The animation is also really smooth in this one! You can watch it on YouTube. Here's a link to episode 1.

Season 2 is also out! I'm yet to watch it, though. I should really do some time...

Ms. Lucky, what's an Infinite Flow?

Hi TJ, Infinite Flow is a genre/trope predominately found in chinese novels, where a character or characters are forced into survival or puzzles games in a seperate reality. They are often horror, and it usually features a character plucked from reality (or dying) and some extra-dimensional system forcing them through self-contained worlds with some sort of challenge and objective. The key is that, after completing the world, they are (sometimes with breaks in between) continued to be forced into yet another world (hence the term ‘infinite’ or ‘unlimited’ flow):

The trope is similar to Quick Transmigration, though the standard premise in that area is more role-playing. Quick transmigration novels (especially in the BL area) are actually pretty popular on tumblr! The fandoms are pretty intense. Infinite flow…not so much. Mainly just me, haha.

Infinite flow can range from more mystery and puzzle based, to grimdark edginess. Generally speaking, even the most lighthearted novels touch upon supernatural horror, so it’s considered a ‘horror’ genre, and the final objective is always to survive.

This is just some rough ideas for an unlimited flow au (horror death game) bullying our good-protag-with-questionable-survival-skills.

Tbh, I'm not sure this is a good au, since the culprits for each scenario will be blatantly obvious, and Shen Yuan is, like, the least ideal mc for this sort of thing.

Instead of stylishly and coolly solving all the mysteries with out-of-the-box thinking and a keen intellect, our intrepid protagonist ... ... will probably misinterpret everything and bumble his way through with luck and plot armor.

Perhaps I'll come back to this idea one day and make it a horror comedy...

There were just two problems: his wish cost 1 million points, and he couldn’t know what the wish was.

the sister intro mentions what unlimited flow actually is, but in general, it’s a subgenre found in chinese novels where the characters are (usually) tossed into a survival game with (usually) infinite levels, though there is (usually) a goal that ends it all. the survival games deal with figuring out the mystery, completing tasks, and surviving the instance. commonly, the characters are given props and/or abilities to help them survive. that’s generally the format of it, but with any other subgenre, there are variations.

if you’re intrigued and want to read examples, you can look through the novelupdates tag of it. majority here are fan-translated/edited MTL (machine translations). some of them may have [Unlimited/Unlimited Flow] next to their names; that’s basically telling readers they are an unlimited flow novel (like mine lol)

there’s way more danmei (bl) of the subgenre translated, but if you know chinese/don’t mind machine translations, you can look at places such as jjwxc/gongzicp for a lot more of the other types. the tag is 无限/无限流.

if you don’t mind reading danmei, i’d suggest reading through completed novels first. they all have various degrees of horror, and the overall tone differs too. suggesting complete novels: if you’d prefer something fluffier, there’s Misplacement Game. if you’re a fan of more gorey novels, there’s Supernatural Movie Actor App. if you want something playing more to the mystery aspect, Card Room (very long) is a good choice. the NU pages of those also have other similar-ish stories rec’d by readers

As someone who reads a lot of horror/unlimited flow stories, it suddenly occured to me that if Blue Lock were a literal horror survival game manga, nobody would complain about Isagi being the protagonist. Nobody's gonna meme about his puzzle pieces and how he has no "special moves" and such. He's the problem solver, the team leader, the murder detective. Without him, everyone will die.

SAGAU Imposter!AU as an unlimited flow instance. Maybe not designed for a multi-person instance, so maybe like an 'entrance test' instance?

For those unfamiliar with the term, 'unlimited flow' refers to a type of webnovel that combines world hopping and horror. Characters, usually referred to as 'Players', will get thrown into various horror worlds (usually called 'instances') like an abandoned hospital, haunted mansion, etc. Players typically have missions or tasks they have to complete, ranging from staying alive for a period of time or specific things that they have to do.

So, imagine going to sleep and waking up in Windrise, in front of the Statue of the Seven. You're so excited by the premise of getting isekai-ed to Genshin Impact, but then a hologram screen popped out in front of you.

Chills went down your spine as you read the screen in front of you. Creator? What creator? The Genshin you know never mentioned anything like this. Was… Was this still the Mondstadt you knew from Genshin Impact?

Seeing the countdown period in the screen started ticking away, you started to look around. You then noticed that Venti's Statue of the Seven was a bit different. It was more… decorated than you remembered in the game. There is a shrine behind it. You can see a lot of Mondstadt specialty items laid in front of it, cecilia flowers being the most abundant. Inside the shrine, you can see a small portrait framed with a beautifully carved frame. As you get closer to take a look at whose picture was in it, blood drained your face when you realized who was the lavishly dressed person in the photo was.

So, going a little crazy tired, I hope fic finders are just as good as finding web novels as fics.

I've been trying to find an unlimited flow horror bl novel where all I can remember is one instance in it. Do I remember the main characters or even it's premise? Nope, just one instance that was visited.

In the instance people are on a train, they can't stay on for long because they need to find a ticket on the station to give to the really hot and scary train conductor. Trying to get tickets on the station, some peeps die, one guy gets possessed but the ghost ends up having the wrong ticket so it's goodbye for him. I think it's the protag tho who not only finds a ticket, but also finds an item that a station ghost was holding hostage, that turns out to be possessed by the train conductor's lover or wife. Protag, after a crazy chase and run to the train, reunited the two, getting really good rewards for it.

So yeah, this is literally all I can remember about this story. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it 🙏
