Opinions on using a foreign language in a fic?

Some authors are bilingual and so are their characters. That is awesome. 10/10, would recommend.

Others have a certain degree of fluency in a foreign language and the incorporate foreign phrases or words into a fic, either for the setting, or to make their character more cultured, or it’s because canonically characters are bilingual. (Examples: Miraculous Ladybug is set in Paris, fanon Draco Malfoy likes to speak occasional French, and Leo Valdez uses Spanish phrases in canon, too.)

Aaaaand there is this wise guy: the author who likes google translate. Most found, in my experience, in anime fandoms. Weebs know no chill when it comes to grotesquely misusing Japanese. (It’s okay, I was one of them in my teenage years. This is friendly fire.)

However, my current beef is with Marvel fandom and its prevalent problem of badly translated Russian. A friend of mine sends me screenshots of butchered Russian in fics and, by god, do I wish authors would stop trying to make Bucky 100% more Russian than he strictly needs to be.

Personally, I think if one does not know the foreign language one intends to use, there are two ways to use it successfully: First is to research existing phrases or words and insert them into a fic. (Like using phrases out of a dictionary or conversation book, or casually making a character drop a Merde instead of Shit to show that stress is making them slip into their native tongue. Small stuff.)

Second is to say the character is speaking a foreign language without actually making them do that. (Example: “Shit,” X cursed in French.) This is a superior method imo as it produces minimal levels of cringe for a bilingual reader as author is not hopelessly messing with a language they are not proficient at.

TL;DR: Google Translate can be a friend, but it’s also the enemy.
