And some other good video game news, too! After being absolute wankers and delisting every single Unreal game a few years ago, Epic is now giving away Unreal Gold and the first Unreal Tournament away for free!
Here's hoping they'll also bring back the rest of the Unreal games, in time. Note: I recommend running both installers once you download them, as the files for the games are hosted online. Better to have the game installation already downloaded and set up in case the files on internet archive ever go poof.

“In 2291, in an attempt to control violence among deep space miners the New Earth Government legalized no-holds-bared fighting. Liandri Mining Corporation, working with the NEG, established a series of leagues and bloody public exhibitions. The fight's popularity grew with their brutality. Soon, Liandri discovered that the public matches were their most profitable enterprise. The professional league was formed; a cabal of the most violent and skilled warriors in known space, selected to fight in a Grand Tournament. Now it is 2341, 50 years have passed since founding of DeathMatch. Profits from the Tournament number in the hundreds of billions. You have been selected to fight in the professional league by the Liandri Rules Board. Your strength and brutality are legendary. The time has come to prove you are the best- to crush your enemies- to win the Tournament”.

MH-Templar
Heya o/
This time showcasing a map called MH-Templar, player suggestion is 2-8 but it is soloable given a bit more time and patience with the ammo regen of the UTJMH mutator.
Music and Monster Layout/Weapon spawns are placed well, the Skybox and Textures/Lighting match the theme of the map. Which is a blessing when some of the maps I find are just the UrealED Untextured Placeholders all over..
Overall it was great to find a new map I hadn't yet played and not run into unfortunate issues like broken triggers or geometry that just kills you because you temporarily phase into the void. Give it a shot should you have it lying about and want to play a small level.

Unreal Tournament got one of those fancy Secret Level episodes and, as one of the nerds who cares a weird amount about the setting of those games, I decided to talk about it

Since I had finished my project of making Tumblr blog lists, another fun little project for my blog I wanted to do was taking screen shots and the occasional video from Unreal Tournament 2004 maps (and maybe some ut3 as well).
My two favorite Unreal themed blogs on tumblr are these ones:
A blog full of cool maps for UT99.
And:
A blog with lovely little scenery & ambience clips from UT2004.
I'm trying not to "steal their thunder" so my goal in particular is to mostly share screenshots, and also showcase some custom maps I like too. :)
Screenshots will mostly be focused on pretty or cool scenery, interesting little details, and any kind of cool liminal spaces or spooky things I can find, too.

i find interesting the way the weapon designs in the Unreal series advanced & changed overtime, both visually and mechanically. the way the designs changed completely between UT99 and UT2K4, the weapons cut from Unreal and the ones that didn't make it to UT99, the weapons added in 2K4, the stinger minigun in Unreal turning into a regular minigun in tournament, the rocket launcher mechanics in UT3, there's a lot to be said about it all - though it's been a little too long since i've played all the games to really remember and make points on it, maybe some day.
maybe as a challenge for myself i could try to remake the UT99 weapons in my own style, while trying to adhere to the source designs, maybe the Unreal (+ return to Na-pali) weapons after, if i'm up to it (and maybe the UT3 designs though i see less point in that).
(i'm not mentioning U2, UT4, & both UC games, because i haven't played them yet, and know next to nothing about them, sorry)

Unreal Tournament (1999) - DM-KGalleon [Juan Pancho Eekels]
Koos Galleon is a good demonstration of the highly sophisticated level design philosophy Epic Games and Digital Extremes used when developing UT99: Which was basically none at all. Developers from both studios essentially built whatever levels sounded cool at the time to justify shipping this glorified expansion pack as a stand-alone, full-priced game.
The result was an eclectic mix of levels in a wide variety of themes, barely held together by Unreal Tournament's iconic soundtrack.
