@amadaans // cont.
her eyes narrowed at the other, distrust and irritation swirled in storm blue eyes. the former was obvious— her hatred for the organization extended to many of its members, current and former alike. it's what took her father away and tore apart what was left of her connections with blackwatch before the fall.
the irritation, however, came from a place of seeing the similarities between baptiste and her brother. having to live with consequences not of their own choosing and trying to atone for it. johanne knew the challenge of such a path, having witnessed what it's done to jackson over the years and how he still held on to whatever kindness he could muster.
perhaps it was her bias showing— he was her younger brother, while baptiste could have once been someone off the street. before the recall, she wouldn't have blinked an eye taking him down before he could even defend himself. nowadays, after working with him occasionally at cassidy's insistence...
the snarl of her gaze pulled back a touch, turned away elsewhere that isn't the man seated nearby. "... this is fine. if i'm not taking up your time."

Week 6: Of Blood and Boyz
Week 6 brings us two new thrilling battles on the verdant fields of Herosand V!
Game Setup:
As with last week's battle, we're at 600 points, letting me field the following lads:
Our Heroes
Tumblr media
We have Captain Incusator in Grav Armor. Three squads of five intercessors each, including the capable Sergeant Caminus. Reginald is our stalwart Dreadnought. Finally, there's Lieutenant Marculus, wielding a master-crafted stalker bolt rifle. Two CP have been spent to make Incusator a Chapter Master.
The one change this week was that we were now doing Maelstrom of War missions with tactical objectives.
The mission type was Cleanse and Capture.
My Narrative:
Having gently corrected the Imperial Guard and defeated the metal scourge of the Necrons, Chapter Master Incusator was now ready to continue his campaign. However, with the sheer number of Imperial Forces, he was beginning to wonder if the glory of this war might not be slightly diluted. He knew that the Iron Council would be upset if Medusa did not receive sufficient honor in this most noble fight for the Imperium! Little did he know how he would be tested in the battles to come.
Match 1:
Blood Angels
Their Forces:
Sanguinary Priest, Chaplain, Death Company with Jet Packs, Primaris Ancient, two squads of Intercessors, and one of Scouts.
quote:
"Sir!" Lieutenant Marculus said, snapping to attention. "The envoys from the Blood Angels are here." "Ah, splendid," Chapter Master Incusator said. "Send them in, lad. It will be nice to speak to someone reasonable for once." A furious man in red armor strode into the tent. "What's this about you badmouthing our successors?" he demanded. "I beg your pardon?" Incusator's brows knit up in confusion. "You should! Going around saying that the Flesh Tearers are weak, you should be ashamed of yourself!" "Ah!" Comprehension began to dawn. "I think you misunderstand." "Beep boop, yes," said Reginald from inside the dreadnought. "It is the flesh that is weak. The Blood Angels are made of flesh. Ipso beep facto, the Blood Angels are weak."
”Reginald! Stop helping!” "That insult won't stand! The cheek of it all!" The man pulled off his power armor's glove and slapped it across Incusator's face. "I challenge you and your tin soldiers to combat!"
Tumblr media
But do they sparkle?
We had some fairly basic terrain. A nice set of ruins, some craters, and a nice block in the middle. He set his intercessors and ancient in the crater on his side of the map, and placed the scouts in the middle block.
Tumblr media
Look! Up in the sky!
Meanwhile, his HQs and his death company were set up in the sky for deep strike fun later on.
I kept my units fairly close together, with one off to the side to head for the ruins. My memory of the tactical objectives is a little fuzzy at this point, but I know two were to grab the objectives closest to me, so that worked out nicely.
The first turn was basically just some shooting around. I got a goodly number of his intercessors and all of his scouts, scoring first blood. Since a goodly portion of his army was in deep strike, he couldn't quite match me for volume of fire, and only did a little bit of damage to my troops.
Tumblr media
Falcon in the Dive
He brought his death company and chaplain out of deep strike behind me, and then put the sanguinary priest down where he could go for my dreadnought. The chaplains and death company charged one of my intercessor squads, but then caught a heroic intervention from the Chapter Master. They took out the intercessors, but they didn't do so well against the chapter master. Imperium's Sword is a really good way to punish backline charges. Then he charged my dreadnought with the sanguinary priest.
Tumblr media
Oh, right in the hubris!
Sadly, the charge didn't go off. This left him open to take the full ride of my dread's shooting followed by a counter charge on my turn, giving me another point for taking his warlord. In desperation, he charged my dread with his remaining intercessor and the ancient.
Tumblr media
Never charge a dreadnought who's been eating garlic.
Overwatch was not kind.
I had also charged my remaining intercessor squad into the melee in the crater.
Tumblr media
Fancy a scrap, lads?
The intercessors were largely killed in the fighting, but between them and the chapter master, the chaplain and death company were finally defeated, leading to victory!
I think the heavy reliance on deep strike helped me out a lot here. If he hadn't had so much of his army off the board to start with, I probably wouldn't have been able to punish him so heavily to start things off. That said, I also got really lucky on some key rolls. My first round of shooting went really well, and then his failed charge with his sanguinary priest allowed me to pour more shooting out before getting into melee.
Match 2:
Orks
Their Forces:
Weirdboy, 12 Burnas, 29 Slugga/Choppa Boyz with boss nob, 10 Shoota Boyz, three deff koptas, with Goff kultur.
quote:
"Well, looks like the blood is also weak!" Chapter Master Incusator said. "Hmm. Seems a bit forced, to be honest," said Sergeant Caminus. "Oh, do you really think so?" "Just a bit. The basic wordplay is sound, though. Just needs a little workshopping." "Thank you, sergeant." Incusator frowned. "I say, do you hear something?" There was a rumbling, and then a ramshackle vehicle and some greenskinned bodies appeared over the horizon. "Orks, sir," Sergeant Caminus said, unnecessarily. "We'll show them! After all, the flesh is weak!" the chapter master shouted. "Da flesh is Waaaagh!" came the response from the orks.
Tumblr media
Green Tide of Flesh
He put the deffkoptas into deep strike, then put as much of his forces behind cover as possible.
Tumblr media
Catch a Ride!
The burna boyz were embarked quite literally onto the trukk. I felt this was the most immediate threat, since he was almost certain to take advantage of the open top of the trukk to torch me with the burnas. I decided I didn't really like that, so poured a decent amount of firepower into the trukk.
Tumblr media
"Oi, where'd da trukk go?"
The trukk went kerblooey, and also took out a good portion of his burnas in the process. Some stalker bolt fire took out a few more, as well as much of the shoota squad.
Tumblr media
Greenskins Defiant
By the end of my turn, the burnas and the shootas were gone, and I managed to take out a few of the slugga/choppa boyz. Once his turn came up, he used his weirdboy to Da Jump his main squad behind my troops.
Tumblr media
"No one expects da orkish inquisition!"
This was his main strategy. I knew it was coming, but sometimes you have to deal with threats one at a time. However, luck was with me again.
He rolled his charge, needing a nine. A five and a three. Thanks to 'Ere We Go, he had the ability to reroll one or either of the dice. He chose the three. And rolled... another three. This is the drawback to playing Goffs as orks. They deal serious damage in a fight once they get into melee, but they have trouble getting there. With Evil Sunz, he would have made it.
He now had the biggest part of his force stuck behind me as my turn came up. I turned basically all of my firepower on them, and then charged in with the chapter master and the dreadnought.
Tumblr media
Sad Waaagh Noises
With only his weirdboy left on the table and his deffkoptas still in deepstrike, we called it there.
He was really unlucky in that my army was mostly tuned for anti-horde. He was also starved for CP by the lack of a battalion. What CP he had he was saving up to use Unstoppable Green Tide to bounce his squad back to full models, but that required him to have at least one boy alive at the end of my turn, which just didn't happen. We talked a bit about how the game had gone, and he'll retune his list for the next games. I look forward to facing him again when he's made those changes.
quote:
Incusator sat among the wreckage of the orkish conveyance reading a data slate. "Great scott!" "Is something the matter, sir?" asked Lieutenant Marculus. "Quite the opposite! We're getting reinforcements. "More troops?" the young man asked. "More iron, lad, more iron. For after all..." "Yes sir. Flesh sir. Weak sir." "Your delivery needs some work, but you've got the gist of it, and that's what matters," Incusator said. "And we'll have a chance to show it soon!"
And those were my games for Week 6! Next, I jump up in points to 800. I've already painted up those models, and also most of the models I'll be adding for 1000 points, barring Iron Father Feirros (who's getting the full two weeks of work done on him). Wish me luck!

Overwatch: Backfire – Chapter V: An Eye for an Eye
Previous chapter: Beginning of the End Tumblr, AO3, Wattpad
Tumblr media
July 14, 2070
It had been over an year since Overwatch was exposed, Amélie disappeared and Gérard was killed, his murderer was still unknown, but everyone was sure it had been his wife and, somehow, Talon was in the mix. Jack was able to come with an agreement with the United Nations to keep all activity going during the investigations. The people, however, were hunting his head. The hate for Overwatch had spread across the globe, people would even call us criminals… It was hell for me. All this time passed by and me and Jack still hadn’t the courage to exchange words. We were also able to finally arrest Akande, keeping him on one of the world’s most secure facilities. Talk about a tough year.
There was an ongoing field mission on Egypt, lead by Captain Ana Amari with her own strike team. In a sniper duel with a Talon enemy — whose identity I would learn later — Ana was seriously injured in her eye, and all her team perished.
As time went by, we did not hear from Ana anymore. We sent search groups to Egypt for about two weeks, they couldn’t find anything related to her. She was gone.
Confirming to her daughter, Fareeha, that her mother was presumably dead was the toughest part of the process. She was, yet, a tough girl, who was proud to follow her mother’s legacy. Although not able to join Overwatch anymore, Fareeha would still fight for peace the way she was able to, in honor of her mother.
August 5, 2070 United Nations Headquarters, USA
Shortly after the search group for Ana was disbanded, the UN summoned a meeting with Overwatch officials — including Jack and Gabriel — to give their verdict upon the future of Overwatch.
They introduced the Petras Act: a document suspending all Overwatch activity worldwide. It was still going to be decided if the agents were going to be prosecuted.
The entire world was following the meeting, broadcast live on every screen of the planet. I will never forget the anger, yet guiltful, face Jack had while trying to defend Overwatch’s existence, while Gabriel was just… there, accepting what was happening.
August 6, 2070 Overwatch Headquarters, Switzerland
The Overwatch members who had just arrived from New York were greeted by a crowd protesting in front of the HQ. They were all holding signs asking for the immediate disband of the organization, cheering about the United Nations’ recent decision.
The orders were clear: evacuate all Overwatch facilities and cease its activities. Of course Jack would resist. When he came back from the United States, he formed a resistance group, occupying the Swiss headquarters, not giving up their connection to the organization. Other agents, including Jesse, Genji, Reinhardt, Torbjörn and Lena, decided it was better for them to quit.
I felt particularly bad for Genji. He never wanted this life Overwatch forced him to have — yet that’s partially his brother’s fault. He would live through constant pain and conflict with himself. After departing, he told me he was going to find peace with a monk he had met once in a mission back in Nepal. His name was Zenyatta, one of the follower’s of Mondatta, a great peace leader. I could only hope he was, indeed, going to find peace.
Another Overwatch facility, Watchpoint: Gibraltar, was lead by Winston, a genetically advanced monkey who is also a brilliant scientist. Everyone there decided to leave too, while he decided to stay, but, unlike Jack, Winston wasn’t creating a resistance. That was just his home.
Moira and Gabriel decided to keep their positions, while I was still unsure about giving up mine, but I felt it was the right thing to do, so I decided to finally talk to Jack properly after all this time... and resign.
As I was about to enter his chambers, Moira stopped me.
— Dr. Ziegler! May I have a minute of your attention?
— Moira… Hi. Um, I’m about to do something… important. Could you wait?
— Don’t do this, Angela — I didn’t know how to reply to that. Did my face gave away that easily I was going to quit? — Trust me, remaining a member of Overwatch might come in handy for you in the future.
— What do you mean? — She kept talking to me on that weird tone, I honestly didn’t know how to react, she was trying to lure me into something.
— Why don’t you come with me?
Everything felt weird about that conversation. I insisted I was busy, but she wouldn’t take no for an answer. As I turned my back to her to open Jack’s door, she shot me with a sleep dart.
— Maybe now you’ll listen to me, Ziegler? — I heard from Moira as I tried to regain consciousness.
As I opened my eyes, I could see Moira and Gabriel standing right in front of me. Blackwatch logos on the walls, I was still at our headquarters, tied up to a cold metal chair.
— W-what is going on here?
— Angela — Gabriel started — we think it’s time for you to learn the truth.
— Before edgelord here says anything, I want to personally thank you, Ziegler. If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t have come this far so easily.
— “We?” — I questioned, confused.
— Angela… — I could feel the slight tone of regret on his voice. — We are with Talon.
As Gabriel’s voice echoed into my ears, my entire body started shaking in fear. I was helping the enemy this entire time? And the enemy was… my friend?
— What are you… What?! — I couldn’t even finish a sentence. I mean, I always felt something was wrong, especially after that day after the Uprising, but would never guess it would go this far.
— We need you, Ziegler — Moira continued. — Well, not need, need you. But you would be a welcome resource — how touching. — You will fly with us to Venice — she turns her eyes to Gabriel — where we shall discuss the final part of our plan.
— What plan?
She replied with a subtle laugh.
Gabriel and I exchanged looks, he was slightly ashamed, while I was terrified. As Moira shouted his name, he escorted me to Blackwatch’s orca ship.

"hey hey... deep breaths, girly. I gotcha." jackson made sure to tilt his head to catch her gaze, attempting to get her focus on him, as he spoke softly. "sit down a mo for me, aye? i'll handle it, but i need ya ta sit down so i know your safe. sound good?"

10 TO WATCH : 31819
RICK HORROW’S 10 TO WATCH : MAYORS EDITION
FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 18
This week, we finally march into the Madness…with bets in hand. Last May, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal law that previously withheld legal sportsbooks to Nevada. According to Bloomberg, seven more states have now begun to allow betting, and a couple dozen others are considering to follow suit. Nationwide, operators’ gambling revenue could reach $6.5 billion by 2023, and bettors in New Jersey, where legalization arrived last June, are already wagering almost $400 million every month. Tens of millions of Americans who otherwise rarely bet on sports will fill out a March Madness bracket and put down $10 or $20 to enter a pool with friends or co-workers. This is where Action Network wants to convert these casual bettors into regular customers. Action Network offers detailed previews of each game, ranks which underdog teams are likely to make a deep run, and provides a service that will fill out brackets with optimized picks based on the number of entrants in a pool. Action Network says it’s averaged almost two million unique visitors per month over the past three months. If other sports betting companies can capitalize on mega events like March Madness, they too will bring in new fans to sports betting.
March Madness is a big stage for student athletes. It’s also a major opportunity for brands like Unilever. This year, Unilever's Dove Men+Care partnered with menswear designer Don C. on a line of limited-edition jerseys that celebrate college basketball rivalries, according to the company. The first March Madness jersey will pay homage to the Tobacco Road rivalry of North Carolina college basketball. Two other jerseys will roll out during March, and each vintage-inspired item blends elements of the featured teams' heritage and culture. Consumers can follow the conversation on the Dove Men+Care website or by searching the hashtag #ReptheRivalry on social media. Dove Men+Care also partnered with past basketball rivals, including former Duke University player Jay Williams and the University of North Carolina's Antawn Jamison, to inspire fans to #ReptheRivalry. The former players will wear the jerseys as part of the campaign. Another cool feature: the jerseys will be "dropped in surprise locations,” and available exclusively to rival fans and former opponents in the rivalries' markets.
This year, March Madness could cost employers over $13 billion. According to the annual study done by global outplacement and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., every hour spent on games can cost employers $2.1 billion, for a total of $13.3 billion over the length of the tournament that will end with the NCAA National Championship game on April 8. Research done by staffing firm Office Team indicates that workers spent an average of 25.5 minutes of their workday on March Madness-related activities. And a survey by TSheets and QuickBooks showed that at least 48% of people participating in March Madness won their brackets during work hours. However, the basketball tournament can foster a little excitement among coworkers. “Streaming games during work hours, heading to a local restaurant to watch the games, filling out brackets or just discussing the games with co-workers will mean hours of distractions during the three-week tournament,” said Andrew Challenger, Vice President.  But Challenger adds that employers should use the tournament games to build morale and not restrict employees. About 97 million people watched March Madness games last year, according to CBS – tens of millions of them during work hours.
The Raiders are officially staying in Oakland for the 2019 season thanks to a stadium lease extension. The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum Stadium Authority board at its latest meeting last Friday "voted unanimously to approve" the Raiders' lease extension at the venue for the 2019 season. The Raiders, according to the San Jose Mercury News, will pay $7.5 million, plus $750,000 they owe from "previous parking fees." The team "pays $525,000 for the practice facility and is allowed to continue using it for 36 months after relocating to Las Vegas." The agreement also includes an "option to stay" for the 2020 season in case the Raiders’ new $1.84 billion, 62,228-seat stadium in Las Vegas "isn’t ready next year." The deal comes on the heels of the latest proposal by fellow Coliseum tenants, MLB’s Oakland A’s, to build a new mixed use stadium on the Oakland waterfront that includes 3,000 housing units, with another 3,000 to be built on the current Oakland Coliseum site.
After a change in venue and some heavy investment from IMG, the Miami Open hopes to regain its premier status within tennis. Of late, the longstanding tournament has fallen behind the likes of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the winner of tennis’ Tournament of the Year award every year since 2014. Now, with former top player James Blake in his second year as Miami Open tournament director and the relocation to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens complete, the time is right for a revival. The Dolphins’ home was secured as the tournament’s new site by IMG after expansion plans at Key Biscayne were shuttered. The new venue sees its prime matches played on a 14,000-seat show court within the main stadium, with 29 additional new match and practice courts adjacent. Hard Rock also offers commercial upgrades on parking, hospitality, and fan engagement. IMG has invested $60 million in the ‘"festivalization" of the event, with as much as $10 million from the budget also reserved to renovate Crandon Park. With a new location and a new vision, Blake and his staff are looking to return the Miami Open to marquee status.
Members of the U.S. women's national soccer team have filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against U.S. Soccer. 28 players accused the federation of paying them far less and subjecting them to far worse working conditions, comprising travel, medical treatment, and field quality, than their male counterparts. It also "brings to the fore an issue that affects all women's sports, not just soccer,” as the New York Times noted. The suit has a precedent. After threatening to boycott the world championships in 2017, the U.S. women's hockey team received a new contract that paid each player more than $71,000 annually, a huge increase over the roughly $10,000 on average they had been making, along with travel accommodations and insurance coverage on par with the men's national team. "We feel a responsibility not only to stand up for what we know we deserve as athletes, but also for what we know is right," said USWNT co-captain Megan Rapinoe. This issue now becomes the dominant storyline leading up to the Women's World Cup, kicking off in June.
The Oklahoma City Thunder have signed a jersey patch sponsorship with Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores, a deal that now puts jersey patches on all 30 NBA teams. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Oklahoma City-based Love’s is a longtime Thunder sponsor. The team premiered the patch over the weekend during a home loss against the Warriors. Other elements of the patch deal include media and social media as well as a community service component. Love’s Travel Stops counts about 500 retail locations in 42 states across the U.S. The family held company has also invested in sports sponsorships including NASCAR – Michael McDowell’s No. 34 Ford Fusion, Minor League Baseball, and collegiate teams. The Love family is worth $7.3 billion, according to Forbes. Overall, the NBA’s 30 different jersey patch deals have been estimated to average $9.3 million annually, with top ranked, big market teams obviously commanding a bigger price tag.
Minnesota Twins roll out monthly passes to fix 2018 attendance dip. According to SportsPro, the new “Twins Pass” initiative will allow fans to gain entry to the team’s Target Field for as little as $49 per month without a designated seat. What this means is that fans wanting a regular seat at the 39,500-capacity venue can pay $99 each month for a vantage point in the upper level, or a monthly $149 for a perch in the ballpark’s lower level. Fans wanting to watch the game with friends or family signed up to the same package can link their tickets using a “sit with friends” function built into the platform which is managed through the MLB Ballpark app. Following in the footsteps of the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, who last year introduced a first-of-its-kind “In the Building Pass,” the Twins are the latest U.S. sports franchise to roll out a monthly ticket offering. As stadiums are becoming smaller and OTT platforms are created, sports team are going to be forced to continually renovate their strategies to bring fans to live events.
ESPN is set to launch its own collegiate video game sports championship. According to Reuters, ESPN will hold its first-ever college championship for competitive video gaming later this May in Houston, where players will compete in five games: Overwatch, Hearthstone, StarCraft II, Heroes of the Storm, and Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. College-level esports have been part of the sports overall expansion in recent years with colleges developing their own competitive teams as they would for traditional sports. Players will come from hundreds of North American schools that are currently competing in qualifying matches with portions of the qualifying rounds, as well as the championship, to be streamed globally. The Overwatch championship matches will even be streamed on Twitch – this offers a whole new opportunity for advertisers to capitalize in the bursting esports sector.
The Washington Capitals’ Go Green night raises $62,625 for charity. Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s foundation held the event for the Anacostia Watershed Society and the Washington Youth Garden. The auction featured autographed, limited edition green jerseys worn during the pregame warmups, autographed sticks wrapped with green tape, and autographed green Capitals pucks. According to nhl.com, T.J. Oshie's warmup jersey went for the highest bid at $3,750, followed by a team puck set at $3,200. The mission of the Anacostia Watershed Society is to protect and restore the Anacostia River while Washington Youth Garden nurtures curious minds and healthy bodies by connecting youth to food, the land and each other. Combining the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day with a charity movement is exactly what other NHL franchises should be doing to better demonstrate their charitable arm to the public while engaging fans at a higher rate.

Paters World - Zone Mortalis Battle Reports
Hello all!
Will and I have managed to play our first two games in the Second Golloch War campaign - set on Paters World.
As a quick reminder, more information on the campaign can be found on the aus30k website - check it out!
Now without further ado... a bit of background, and a summary of the games with pictures!
The Board
The setting of this was a wrecked hive complex, which was in its death throes after being bombed by atomics and heavy artillery in the Traitor assault on Paters World. The Raven Guard and Salamanders respectively were being inserted into different parts of the hive to try to recover and protect vital material needed to supply the Last Light forces.
The board is a Zone Mortalis board, which I have bought from wargame-model-mods.co.uk. I’ve built it, and I’m in the process of painting it and rigging it up with LEDs. The board is fully magnetised and modular - we used different layouts in each game. Check it out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Game 1 - 750pts, Raven Guard v Night Lords
For game 1 I ran a Raven Guard force. I had to proxy (shame!) my Chaplain (Uriah Tomb) as a Salamander, as I haven’t gotten that model built yet.
Uriah Tomb - Chaplain w/ Jump Pack, Boarding Shield, Power Axe, Melta Bombs, Artificer Armour
5 Dark Furies, w/ Melta Bomb
5 Mor Deythan w/ Melta Bomb and Artificer Armour, 5x Combiflamers
10 Tactical Marines
Contemptor Cortus with 2x DCCW
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Will ran Night Lords:
Chaplain w/ Power Axe and Artificer Armour
15 Tactical Marines with extra CCWs
10 man Terror Squad with an Apothecary
Contemptor Cortus with Kheres and DCCW
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Game
We ran a simple objectives mission - Will was the Defender, I was the Attacker. We ended up deploying in table quarters next to each other, and I managed to infiltrate onto the objectives to make Will the de facto Attacker!
Note... we used a “blip” system - Until you got line of sight on an enemy unit, you didn’t know what it was! It was represented by a bit of paper with a number on it... so there was a lot of early cat and mouse trying to guess wha tunits were by how they moved. Once a unit was revealed it was then deployed. These rules are accounted for in Zone Mortalis.
We also used the catastrophic damage table - every player turn you roll on it, and events from cave-ins to dreaded hivequakes to dust storms can occur to change how the game plays!
Deployment
Tumblr media
(You can just about see at the top a bit of paper which was a dreadnought)
Turn 1
The blips cautiously manoeuvred around - nothing major!
Turn 2
A terrible cave in buried 3(!) Terror squad marines under rubble and rock!
The Night Lords reserves arrived, and immediately launched themselves at an objective, revealing the Mor Deythan! They were slightly outnumbered by the 15 tactical marines...
The Night Lords then pulled back, satisfied what was nearby to them.
The Mor Deythan tried to do a tactical withdrawal, but some awful run moves prevented them from moving far - they were horribly exposed in a doorway.
A Raven Guard dreadnought advanced up the main thoroughfare.
The Dark Furies managed to turn things around - they did a ballsy jump pack move, surviving the terrain checks, and slammed home into the Terror squad. They had initiative 5 on the charge... no Terror marines were left standing once they had gone to work. The Furies then pulled back into a corridor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turn 3
The Night Lords were reeling from the impact of the Dark Furies. The Tactical squad moved after the Mor Deythan, pushing a huge charge onto them. The Chaplain took a wound on the charge and a Tactical fell to overwatch due to the Mor Deythan blowing their combi flamers.
The ensuing combat saw the Mor Deythan do a good showing and survive the combat... but they were then swept after they broke and ran!
The Night Lords Cortus ripped a HP and an arm off of its Raven Guard foe.
The Dark Furies, emboldened by their victory, boosted into the Night Lords deployment zone to snag an objective. The RG Tacticals also came on, rushing down the flank to grab another objective.
There were just dust storms and tremors this turn... nothing too dramatic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turn 4
The Night Lords Dreadnought pushed up to attack its Raven Guard foe - the combat was inconclusive, with no HP done.
The Tacticals consolidated onto an objective and waited to see if they could survive the Dark Furies...
Then... HIVEQUAKE! Every model had to take a Strength Test or die...
2 Raven Guard Tacticals and a Dark Fury were crushed... but so was the Night Lords Chaplain(!) and five(!!) Tacticals.
The Raven Guard exploited this shocking turn of events - the Dark Furies blended the remaining Tacticals, as the Raven Guard Cortus punched its Night Lord foe into paste.
Wipeout by the Raven Guard! Loyalist Victory!
Game 2 - 1,000pts, Salamanders v Night Lords
For this game I ran some Salamanders...
Urodela Brate - Cataphractii Delegatus, TH/SS (Covenant of Fire)
5 Firedrakes - 2x Chainfist, 3x TH/SS
13 Tactical Marines - Power Fist, Artificer Armour
10 Pyroclasts - Artificer Power Sword, Melta Bombs x10
Will ran Night Lords again...
Ophion - NL special Praetor (Terror Assault)
10 Terror Marines with an Apothecary
10 Terror Marines with an Apothecary
Cortus with Kheres + Fist
Cortus with Kheres + Fist
The Game & Deployment
We did the same setup, except this time I was the Defender and Will was the Attacker. We changed up the board layout, and I managed to get lucky with deployment and objectives and ended up being able to sit my (hidden by a blip!) Firedrakes very near one, and my Pyroclasts directly on another. Will Infiltrated up some Terror marines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turn 1
The Night Lords immediately pushed out to identify the Firedrakes, and then whipped back round the corner to try to draw the Terminators out.
This basically worked - I moved into the main central room to dominate the objective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turn 2
A dust storm obscured shooting!
The Terror marines moved in, and the Dreadnought on the board revealed itself. The other Dreadnought arrived, as did the other Terror Squad.
The Firedrakes were the centre of a storm of fire - Plasma, Kheres, Grav and Bolter shots rang through the obscuring dust... a single wound was done to a Firedrake, and a Night Lords marine was killed by a grav shot from his own side!
The Terror Squad charged in, committing a full unit with Ophion!
The combat was brutal and sustained. Three of the Firedrakes were dragged down, with the rest and the Delegatus on one wound. However all but Ophion and a single Terror marine were left standing!
The Tactical Marines arrived, and secured an objective, shooting up a marine from the other Terror squad. In the next phase of combat, Ophion and the other Terror marine were turned into paste, but only the Delegatus and a single Firedrake on one wound were left!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turn 3
The Night Lords showed they had a talent for murder... the other Terror Squad swept into the wounded Firedrakes... and did a lot of wounds.
Tumblr media
They didn’t survive.
The two Dreadnoughts then hunted the tacticals, but were blocked by walls.
On the Salamanders turn, the Pyroclasts and Tacticals fell back onto the objectives, protected from the Dreads by walls, and the Terror Squad would have to assault through a load of flamers.
Turn 4
The Dreadnoughts started ripping apart the walls (AV14, 3HP, need pens to remove HP) and did a lot of damage... the Terror Squad spread out, and sat on an objective. The Salamanders pulled back further and hugged the objectives.
Turn 5
HIVEQUAKE! A whole NL contemptor was crushed... as were HALF the Pyroclasts (5!!) and 2 Tacticals! The Salamanders were now in a massively weakened position!
The Terror squad smelled blood, and rushed around the corner, eating the overwatch and tanking all 10(!) wounds.
They ripped 30 wounds into the Pyroclasts... and the Pyroclasts tanked them all, killed a Terror marine in return, and forced them to run!
The Pyroclasts rallied up, flaming 33 wounds onto the fleeing Terror squad and wiping them out with the help of the Tacticals. With a single Dreadnought on one HP left, the Night Lords called it.
A stunning turnaround and counter-turn around on the final turn!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Victory again to the Loyalists!
A great pair of games, and a great use of the new ZM board. For the Emperor!

RE: The “Shipping War”
There is a lot of this going around already, but I’d like to add my take to it.
All I’ll say is be mindful of what you’re saying, fellow members of this fandom. Be mindful of what words you’re putting out there onto the internet, because in this day and age they might follow you down the road. Some words and some actions can have consequences.
Representation issues are important, but be mindful of who you’re tearing down in the process of wanting to get your point across. Seeing diverse characters in media should be a given, seeing nuanced, three-dimensional versions of ourselves in media is important. The writer for Overwatch has said, politely, that you as an individual should never feel like your feelings, your ships are invalid.
Queerbaiting is a problem within media. I full blown stand with you there. There are countless examples in which fans have been led on before by creators who should have been honest with their audience (see The 100, Rizzoli and Isles, Warehouse 13, Sherlock, Orange is the New Black). So far, we have seen Tracer in a positive relationship with her girlfriend/possible spouse Emily. We have been told there will be further LGBT characters in the universe, and I too would like to see Blizzard follow through with this.
However, don’t send death threats. This will not help your case. Don’t tell people to kill themselves for what they ship, for what they headcanon, for what they choose to be invested in. You shouldn’t be doing this, period. I don’t care if it’s “trolling” or not. There are people behind the words you’re reading on this page, there are people of all different backgrounds who are at different stages of their life, in different emotional/mental statuses. If you see something you don’t like, take a deep breath, block, blacklist, and move on. Do something else that will make YOU happy.
Criticize thoughtfully, but try not to become too entangled in the weeds so much that you miss the entire forest. Remember that fandom is supposed to be fun, a hobby, an escape. Overwatch is ultimately a video game. You can still write your fanfiction, you can still write your headcanons. If canon limited me on what I was able to write and think and feel, then fandom would be significantly less exciting, less speculative.
Creators have a right to tell the story they personally wish to tell. Just as we are all allowed to write fanfiction, come up with headcanons, and share our works with others, original content creators who build these sandboxes have the right to do whatever they like with the universe they originally created. We are guests taking residence in the guest bedrooms of creators, who gave us the privilege of entering the house in the first place. Just as you would dislike someone coming onto your AO3 piece and telling you “hey, I’d rather you write ‘x’, could you write ‘x’ instead?” we should be more respectful to content creators. Creators are becoming more and more accessible, but this access can be cut off if someone feels uncomfortable. We are lucky to have a writer who is willing to communicate with fans and share lore outside of the game itself. Do not take advantage of that relationship.
Finally, I would like to remind those that would be quick to dismiss the idea of Angela and Genji being paired together simply because they are of opposite genders, there was a time (a time that is still going on, a time that perhaps has never really left us, if the U.S. election is anything to go by) when interracial couples were not only discriminated against, they were not allowed to be married. These Anti-Miscegenation Laws were overturned in the 1967 Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia. There are interracial, opposite gender couples who face stigma every single day from their families, from their communities, all around the country, within the United States and around the world (The Third Reich, Apartheid South Africa). I am in no way attempting to conflate the struggles of the LGBT community with the struggles of interracial couples, but I would like to at least state the history.
A Japanese man and a Swiss woman (or even a white man from Indiana and a Chicano man from Los Angeles) being in a relationship is a type of representation, an important one. Normalizing this type of diversity helps provide empathy, catharsis for those who may be struggling in the real world with this type of stigma. Further, by dismissing Genji and Angela as solely “straight/heterosexual”, this erases bisexuality/pansexuality/asexuality and polyamorous relationships. We do exist.
Finally, I would like to remind others that in the end, all Genji and Angela exchanged was chocolate. In the end, they are friends. If giving someone chocolate immediately means you’re in love with someone and want to immediately have sex with them, then that episode of Spongebob Squarepants, in retrospect, can now be seen in a completely new light (this is a joke, please don’t take it seriously).
Be good to each other.

caled Composites Model 401, an exotic, stealthy jet aircraft with a dorsal air inlet, trapezoidal "Lambda" wings, chined edges, and a big V-tail has flown from the company's base in Mojave, California across the country to Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland. "NAS Pax River," as it is often called, is the Navy's premier aerospace test base, roughly akin to Air Force's Edwards AFB in California. The long trip comes 18 months after the type's first flight and could help to finally shed some light as to what the aircraft's mission is and who its intended owner is. It also serves as proof that the design has matured to the point where cross-country flights are not an issue. One of two Model 401s in existence stopping off for gas in Bowling Green, Kentucky on its way to NAS Pax River. What a crazy plane to have show up at your FBO!: Our good friend @CivMilAir helped us track the jet after it left Bowling Green and headed further east, terminating its flight at NAS Patuxent Maryland. @CIVMILAIR Since its first flight, nearly no new details have been officially released about the Model 401's mission or its intended customer, aside from the fact that it and its sister ship were indeed built for an external entity. The famed aerospace design firm's original statement read: "Scaled Composites is proud to announce the rollout and first flight of its most recent project, experimental aircraft Model 401. Scaled worked with a proprietary customer to build two vehicles to demonstrate advanced, low-cost manufacturing techniques and to provide aircraft for research flight services to industry partners and the United States government. The two vehicles were designed to be identical in outer mold line and performance, with each aircraft powered by a single Pratt & Whitney JTD-15D-5D engine with 3,045 pounds of thrust. The vehicles are capable of flying Mach 0.6 with a service ceiling of 30,000 feet and have a wingspan of 38 feet and are 38 feet long. They have an empty weight of 4,000 pounds and a maximum take-off weight of 8,000 pounds with an endurance of up to three hours. Aaron Cassebeer, Project Engineer said, “This is such an exciting time for us. Scaled is at the forefront of experimental aircraft development and I am fortunate enough to have a front row seat.” He went on to say this about the mission, “Today was a great day for our test team. We had a great flight and we are looking forward to the future test program.” This successful first flight is the beginning of the flight test phase for vehicle number 1. The Scaled team plans to continue envelope expansion on the first aircraft as they move toward first flight of the second Model 401 vehicle." Still, Scaled Composites' corporate silence doesn't mean that new facts haven't emerged. We have kept a very close eye on the aircraft and have discovered a bunch of information about its lineage that seems to point towards unique possibilities as to its intended purpose. Above all else, we discovered it is called "Son Of Ares," with each aircraft being named after the Greek gods of fear and terror Phobos and Deimos. Ares was Scaled Composites' light close air support prototype from 30 years ago that ended up being turned into a small but highly adaptive testbed for sensor, communications, and avionics technologies, many of which had to do with unmanned aircraft. You can read all about this in these two prior exclusives of ours. This would point to the possibility that this aircraft could be reconfigured to carry various types of sensor payloads—a feature that is not uncommon on Scaled Composites aircraft. Its upward canted wings may also be indicative of a platform optimized for carrying sensors as it would help keep its target within a sensor's field of view during banking turns. MATT HARTMAN/SHOREALONE FILMS Model 401 getting some TLC on the ramp in Mojave. Note the bays are open on the underside of the fueselage. It appears to be a somewhat stealthy design, which would indicate that it has some level of enhanced survivability when operating over or near contested territory, or at the very least, wherever it is intended to be operated could be sensitive in nature. As we noted when it was initially unveiled, its design is remarkably similar to General Atomics' Predator C/Avenger unmanned aircraft, a plane that also designed with some level of low-observability in mind. It also shares similar attributes with past technology demonstrators, such as Tacit Blue and Bird Of Prey. So, the big question is why would this aircraft fly across the entire country to NAS Pax River? Did the Navy order these aircraft? If so, for what purpose? Are they to become test aircraft that act as surrogates for new sensors? Are they to be used as training aids to replicate the capabilities of penetrating unmanned surveillance aircraft like the RQ-170 Sentinel or Q-11 Avenger during exercises? We know that manned platforms with similar performance as advanced unmanned aircraft currently in service have acted as stand-in surrogates for training exercises. We have also speculated that the aircraft could be optionally manned, similar to the company's innovative Firebird design. SCALED COMPOSITES. With this in mind, maybe U.S. Navy Special Warfare Command has decided to procure a manned aircraft that can easily stand-in for unmanned aircraft during testing and training missions. Clearly, overwatch and airborne intelligence collection has become a very important part of special operations. Most famously, the RQ-170 kept watch on Bin Laden's compound and was overhead relaying video during Operation Neptune Spear—the SEAL Team Six raid to capture or kill the terrorist mastermind. It's also possible that it is just visiting the base for some unknown reason. But that's a long and expensive flight for such an aircraft to make just for show and tell. We have reached out to NAS Patuxent River for more information, we will let you know what we hear back.

The best multi-platform games you can buy
The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.
The Insider Pick:
Whether you have a PlayStation, an Xbox, or a Windows PC, you can play any of these great multi-platform games. Our favorite titles include “Doom,” “The Witcher III: Wild Hunt,” “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard," “Metal Gear Solid V,” and “Overwatch.”
The game industry is at an interesting crossroads right now. PC gaming has become hugely popular over the past decade or so, with many people even building their own custom machines. As a result, consoles makers have increasingly had to compete with stronger and more regularly-updated computer hardware. Many gamers still prefer consoles due to their lower cost and convenience of use, but there’s no arguing that these systems, by their nature, lag a bit behind PCs when it comes to delivering a bleeding-edge graphical experience.
Since the Nintendo Entertainment System, game consoles have typically followed generational releases with new ones coming out every five or six years. We may be witnessing the end of this traditional launch cycle, however. In an attempt to close the gap between gaming PCs and consoles, Sony and Microsoft have offered more frequent hardware refreshes with machines like the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. These units, while still technically falling within the current console generation, boast beefed-up hardware that allows developers to push them further and stay up-to-date with modern trends like 4K and VR – features that have been available on PC for a few years now.
This ongoing arms race between console and computer hardware has also seen a notable decrease in the number of system exclusives. The PC, Xbox, and PlayStation each have their own libraries of unique games that are particular to each platform, but we’re increasingly seeing games released across multiple systems. Compare this to a decade or two ago, when the vast majority of games were exclusive to one platform and these “multi-plats” were far less common.
If trends hold, then more frequent console hardware updates and multi-platform gaming appear to be the future of the industry. This is good news for PC and console gamers alike: Players who love the pick-up-and-play convenience of consoles don’t need a beefy custom computer to play the latest AAA titles at high resolution, and dedicated PC gamers now get to enjoy many franchises, such as Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid, that were just a few years ago confined to specific platforms like Nintendo or PlayStation.
The sheer number of multi-platform games available today makes it difficult to narrow it down to just five. And although things like DLC and micro-transactions have caused their fair share of controversy in the modern industry, one thing is clear: There have been some truly awesome titles coming out recently from developers around the world, and the past few years have been great for gaming.
In this guide, we’ve done our best to smoke out what are arguably the five best multi-plats available on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 so you can enjoy them all no matter what system you prefer.
Read on in the slides below to find out why we love “Doom,” “The Witcher III: Wild Hunt,” “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard," “Metal Gear Solid V,” and “Overwatch.”
The best first-person shooter game
Id Software
Why you'll love it: Id Software’s 2016 “Doom” delivers all of the insane and over-the-top FPS gameplay that made the original famous, offering the classic first-person shooter experience that gamers have been craving for years.
There are few games that can be called “legendary,” and id Software’s 1993 classic “Doom” is certainly one of them. Although it wasn’t the original first-person shooter, “Doom” remains perhaps the biggest pioneer of the genre and has sold more than 10 million copies to date.
The game is still revered today for many reasons: Its intense high-speed run-and-gun play style, its sprawling open level design that encouraged exploration, its famous silent protagonist (known only as “Doomguy”), and, naturally, its over-the-top violence, which was relatively unique — not to mention extremely controversial — at the time.
Id Software has developed a number of successful sequels and re-releases over the years, but the studio’s pledge to return to the original formula made 2016’s “Doom” the most ambitious of them all. “Doom 3” was the most recent release before then, and while it earned high praise from gamers and critics, it traded the high-speed shooter gameplay for a more fleshed-out narrative and a brooding survival-horror atmosphere. In contrast, the new “Doom” was built from the ground-up to capture the spirit of the golden days of first-person shooters, and at this, it truly excels.
A full reboot of the franchise, 2016’s “Doom” once again takes place at a research facility on Mars where a portal to Hell has been established. Doomguy (now referred to as the “Doom Slayer”) is a legendary demon hunter who has been trapped and kept asleep by the forces of the underworld. After the armies of Hell invade, you, as the Doom Slayer, are awoken and tasked with repelling the incursion and sealing the portal. All the classic ingredients are there: Familiar demons, familiar weapons, and the familiar fast-paced and violent gameplay.
But “Doom” is more than just an old-school FPS with a new coat of paint. This pony comes with a few new tricks all its own, like vertically-oriented level designs that take advantage of Doom Slayer’s new-found jumping and climbing abilities — a far cry from the original game where Doomguy couldn’t even look up and down, let alone jump around. The open stages encourage exploration in true Doom spirit, standing as a refreshing counter-point to many modern shooters which send you running from cover to cover down long corridor-like levels.
Another new combat element is the “Glory Kill,” which allows you to perform brutal melee executions on wounded enemies which yields extra ammunition and health bonuses. There are no recharging shields or health packs for you to rely on here. Instead, Doom Slayer heals his wounds only through violence. There is also no cover system that encourages you to hide behind obstacles or avoid fire – everything forces the player to keep pushing forward, making for a fast and furious experience that harks back to first-person shooters of decades past.
“Doom” stands as a gory, adrenaline-fueled triumph of old-school game design and is proof positive that in a sea of modern shooters, sometimes all players want to do is rip and tear.
Pros: Fun and fast gameplay exemplary of the glory days of first-person shooters, an intense metal soundtrack, and excellent level design that rewards exploration
Cons: Somewhat repetitive campaign, a lackluster multiplayer suite, and the extreme violence may be too much for some
Buy "Doom" on Amazon for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Windows PC for $29.99
The best action role-playing game
CD Projekt Red
Why you'll love it: A great story, excellent combat, and a breathtaking open-world make “The Witcher III: Wild Hunt” one of the best action role-playing games of all time and easily the best entry in CD Projekt Red’s award-winning series.
The Witcher series has had an interesting run. The action-adventure role-playing franchise, developed by the Polish studio CD Projekt Red, came out of nowhere in 2007 with “The Witcher” (the studio’s debut), which became a sleeper hit.
It went on to spawn two successful sequels: “The Witcher II: Assassins of Kings” greatly expanded upon the original, adding an enhanced combat system and more dynamic open world, while “The Witcher III: Wild Hunt” masterfully perfected these elements, earning its place as one of the greatest gaming achievements in recent years.
CD Projekt Red has stated that “The Witcher III” will be the last game to feature Geralt of Rivia — the titular “Witcher,” or monster-hunter — as the main character, and it’s the perfect game to cap off the trilogy. The plot of the series is based on popular fantasy novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The player, as Geralt, is tasked with bringing down a myriad of dangerous otherworldly creatures as he tries to find his daughter, who is herself being hunted by a supernatural force.
“Wild Hunt” drops you into a wide-open world — more than three times larger than that of “Skyrim” — and lets you tackle the main storyline at your leisure, giving you plenty of freedom to explore and complete the many side-quests available throughout the game. You control Geralt from a third-person perspective, duking it out with enemies both human and non-human utilizing a variety of melee and ranged weapons along with a number of magical attacks. The hack-and-slash action-adventure gameplay is layered with an RPG system that lets you level up your character, strengthening your skills and unlocking new abilities.
The gameplay is fluid, fun, and challenging, but where “The Witcher III” really stands apart is in its epic world design. With “Wild Hunt,” CD Projekt Red set out to redefine sandbox games by creating an organic, breathing, dynamic world that “lives apart” from the player character and his actions.
It worked: The realm of the Northern Kingdoms feels more real than ever before, equally dark and beautiful, and it truly comes alive with changing landscapes, ecosystems, and human communities. You don’t just feel like a character who was dropped into a static game environment of pre-programmed NPCs, but instead like a smaller part of a larger, truly active organic world that moves and evolves around you.
The breathtaking visuals, wonderfully-designed living world, great action-RPG gameplay, and well-written story are all capped off by a fantastic soundtrack executed by the Brandenburg State Orchestra using older instruments to create an authentic late Medieval/early Renaissance sound.
“The Witcher III: Wild Hunt” is also a meaty game: The main story alone will take you around 40 to 50 hours to complete, but all of the side quests, included DLC, and ample opportunities for exploration (which you will find yourself doing a lot) can keep you busy for well over 100 hours.
Pros: A huge and dynamic open world that truly feels alive, compelling story and character writing, excellent action-RPG gameplay, breathtaking graphics with masterful art direction, and a superb orchestral soundtrack
Cons: Some bugs and optimization issues (although this has mostly been patched), too many minor “fetch” quests that interrupt the main story, and the violence and sexual themes are not suitable for young players
Buy "The Witcher III: Wild Hunt Complete Edition" on Amazon for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Windows PC for about $27.99 on sale or $59.99 originally
The best survival-horror game
Capcom
Why you'll love it: “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” represents a true return to fundamentals for Capcom’s long-running survival-horror series, delivering all of the atmospheric terror that defined a whole genre while still managing to put a modern spin on a classic formula.
In 1996, Capcom released “Resident Evil,” a classic that defined an entire genre of survival-horror games. Many developers attempted to imitate it with mixed success, and after a few well-received sequels, even Capcom grew weary of the standard formula it had created. “Resident Evil 4,” while massively popular, signaled a major change in focus for the series away from brooding slow-paced gameplay with a focus on scavenging and survival towards a faster, more action-oriented style that felt more like popular third-person shooter games.
A few lackluster sequels to “Resident Evil 4” were met with a lukewarm reception from players and critics. Gamers increasingly clamored for a new entry in the series that was true to the experience of the originals, and thankfully, it seems Capcom finally took the hint. Enter “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard,” a triumph of game design that heralds a much-needed return to the fundamentals of survival-horror that Capcom had largely pioneered.
As popular and beloved as the original Resident Evil formula was, it was not without its criticisms. The third-person view with pre-rendered environments came with a control scheme that felt clunky and awkward at times, especially during combat.
For “Biohazard,” Capcom instead implemented a first-person view (the first main entry in the franchise to utilize this, although a few unsuccessful spin-offs had tried it before). This goes a long way in addressing the problems with the old control scheme while greatly enhancing your immersion into this terrifying game-world.
The setting of “Resident Evil 7” will feel instantly familiar to fans, dropping the player into an old mansion that harks back to the setting of the first title. Instead of zombies, however, this house is inhabited by the bizarre Baker family along with bizarre humanoid creatures known as the “Molded.”
The player, as a man named Ethan, must use whatever means available to survive — stealth, caution, and escape are the focus here rather than combat, although you do get a number of melee weapons and firearms. Ammo is precious, forcing you to scavenge for it along with first aid supplies, adding to the tension and to the oppressive sense of danger and fear.
The return to the slower pace and exploratory gameplay also sees the return of the classic puzzles that the player must solve in order to proceed, but sadly, these are sparse and easily overcome. The boss battles also leave something to be desired, although this is not enough of a detriment to mar the fantastic atmosphere and edge-of-your-seat gameplay. “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” is a true sequel, not a reboot or re-imagining, and some familiar faces appear near the end of the story to help out Ethan.
The final scene even alludes to the existence of a re-formed Umbrella Corporation, so it’s safe to say that Capcom is far from finished with this series or its story — and as long as the devs stick to the excellent formula of “Biohazard,” then fans of Resident Evil have a lot to look forward to.
Pros: Immersive and terrifying survival-horror atmosphere, a true return to the classic roots of Resident Evil, a great VR mode, and the new first-person perspective works extremely well
Cons: The puzzles are too easy and too few, the boss fights pale in comparison to the rest of the game, and it’s definitely not recommended for the faint of heart
Buy "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" on Amazon for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Windows PC for $49.99

One of the first things you want to figure out when purchasing a monitor is the size and resolution. 1080p, 1440p, and 4K are popular resolutions.
1080p
1920x1080 is by far the most common gaming resolution today. As the name suggest, its resolution is the sum of 1920 pixels multiplied by 1080. This amounts to a combined 2,073,600 pixels. While it's popular, it's been around for a long time and is beginning to show its age. As a result, it's best suited for smaller panels, where its relatively low pixel count won't be as detrimental. We're talking monitors in the realm of 23 inches and below.
1440p
2560x1440p, also referred to as quad-high-definition (QHD), is a sweet spot for many PC gamers with mid to high-end hardware. With its 3,686,400 combined pixel count, it offers 77 percent more pixels than 1920x1080 but isn't nearly as graphically demanding as 4K. Good graphics cards to pair it with include Nvidia's GTX 1070 or AMD's RX Vega 56 and up. Its pixels makes it great for monitors in the 24-30 inch range.
4K
When it comes to gaming monitors, 4K typically equates to a resolution of 3840x2160. It's also referred to as Ultra-High-Definition (UHD), made up of 8,294,400 total pixels. This is four times 1920x1080. As a result, the resolution can be very graphically demanding on GPUs. While the super-sharp resolution can mitigate jaggy aliasing issues on even the biggest 4K panels, we would generally only recommend one to gamers who own a high-end card like Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or those with two high-end graphics cards like Nvidia's GTX 1080 or AMD's RX Vega 64 running in SLI/Crossfire.
Ultrawide 21:9 Aspect Ratio Monitors
The previous monitors we mentioned all used 16:9 aspect ratios, which means they feature a width of 16 units and a height of 9. While they're really popular, ultrawide 21:9 monitors have been gaining a lot of traction in recent years. They can give you an advantage in shooters like Battlefield 1 by allowing you to more easily spot enemies in your peripheral vision with a wider field of view. Not all games take advantage of the wider aspect ratio, however. Older games may present black bars on either side of the screen. Some games like Overwatch will just crop the top and bottom, which actually inhabits your view if you play in fullscreen.
Ultrawide monitors come in a variety of resolutions. The most popular ones include 2560x1080, 3440x1440, and the highest-end 3840x1600. The latter isn't as graphically demanding as 4K, but it is more taxing than the aforementioned 2560x1440p, so you'll want a beefy GPU like the GTX 1080 or RX Vega 64 to run it.
Flat vs Curve
Curved panels are an emerging monitor trend. Paired with an ultrawide aspect ratio, they can make you feel a little more enveloped in the action. While they're often paired with ultrawide displays, you'll sometimes also see 16:9 monitors rocking curved panels..
Most curved monitors typically offer curved angles between 21 and 31 degrees, but there are more aggressive designs that extend beyond. Deciding whether to get a curved monitor or how deep the curve should be comes down to personal preference. We suggest you try one out before you invest. Generally speaking, we'd only recommend a curved monitor when it's paired with an ultrawide panel.
Refresh Rate
When discussing monitors, hertz is a measurement used to dictate how fast a panel can draw individual frames, or "refresh," a screen. A monitor's refresh rate dictates its frame rate limit. For instance, a 60Hz panel is limited to displaying a maximum of 60 frames per second. We strongly recommend high refresh rate monitors for gaming as a result, but they do typically cost more. While most modern monitors are limited to 60Hz, fancier gaming monitors can go up to 75, 120, 144, and even 240Hz.
High refresh rate monitors are great for competitive fighting games and twitch-based shooters, as they give you more frame data. You will need a powerful rig that can output these high frame rates to take advantage of them, however.
120Hz monitors and above are generally needed for 3D panels that use stereoscopic glasses, but most manufacturers have moved away from 3D as the technology hasn't gained much traction.
Adaptive Refresh Rate
While most monitors are locked to a consistent refresh rate (i.e., 60Hz or 120Hz, etc.), adaptive refresh rate displays allow your graphics card to control the refresh rate of the panel. For instance, if your gaming rig is only able to render 40 frames per second at any given time, your graphics card will lower the refresh rate of your monitor to 40Hz to match it. Similar to enabling V-Sync, this mitigates screen tearing, but without increasing input latency--V-Sync's major drawback. You essentially get the best of both worlds with an adaptive refresh rate screen.
It's a feature that we really recommend. Fortunately, both AMD and Nvidia offer adaptive refresh rate solutions. On AMD's side, there is FreeSync. On Nvidia's side, there is G-Sync. You'll need to pair the monitors with each respective vendor's GPU for the adaptive refresh rate to work.
G-Sync panels require an Nvidia module in the monitor, whereas FreeSync panels only require that a monitor support the DisplayPort 1.2 standard. Because G-Sync panels require a physical module, they typically cost more than their FreeSync counterparts.
Panel Types
When it comes to displays, there are two main types. Most monitors use liquid crystal display LEDs that provide fluorescent backlighting. The other type is the emerging OLED tech.
LCD LED:
TN
TN stands for twisted nematic, and it's a popular panel that's cheap to manufacture. Its major benefit is that it offers a fast response time, which is good for gaming, but they generally have inferior viewing angles compared to their IPS equivalents. Their color accuracy also isn't as good.
IPS
IPS stands for in-plane switching and they are generally more expensive and superior to their TN counterparts. They offer wider viewing angles and better color accuracy than TN, which makes them great for photo and video editing. Historically, TN panels have offered noticeably faster response times, but manufacturers have been able to bring down IPS response times below five milliseconds, which is more than adequate for most gamers. As a result, it's a panel type that we recommend to most people.
VA
VA stands for vertical alignment. The panel type offers a better contrast ratio than IPS, which means it provides deep black levels. It also offers better color accuracy and viewing angles than TN, though it can't match IPS in either category. As it pertains to gaming, one negative aspect of VA panels is that they are known to produce undesirable ghosting effects, which are more noticeable when there's a lot of movement on screen.
OLED:
The emerging panel tech to watch out for is organic light emitting diode panels. These OLED screens use a transmissive display that generates its own individually backlit pixels rather than rely on backlighting provided by larger LEDs. This allows them to turn off individual pixels to achieve true black levels. The major downside to OLED panels is that they can't get as bright as their LED equivalents.
While you're starting to see them on high-end TVs and smartphones, they haven't made a significant dent in the gaming monitor scene due to how new the technology is.
HDR
HDR stands for high-dynamic range, and it aims to offer a wider color gamut beyond the longstanding sRGB standard. HDR pushes a higher contrast ratio between white and black levels and generally attempts to represent colors more realistically.
According to Nvidia, HDR can expand the color gamut by a factor of two, which amounts to roughly 75 percent of the visible color spectrum.
There are multiple HDR standards. HDR 10 requires panels to reach 2000 nits of brightness, whereas Microsoft's spec is set at 600 nits.
Like OLED, HDR is an emerging technology and is only beginning to make headway in the PC gaming monitor space.
Response Time
When looking for a monitor geared for gaming, it's important to get one that offers a quick response time. Response time is generally measured by how long it takes for a pixel to turn from one shade of grey to another. You'll want to look for a monitor that offers five milliseconds of latency or below.
Having a high response time will make gameplay look blurry and present undesirable trailing edges. This will be particularly evident when there's a lot of movement on screen. It can also serve as a gaming disadvantage, as you'll have less time to react to in-game occurrences.
Ports
When purchasing a gaming monitor, it's a good idea to note whether its video port/s will support your graphics card. For instance, some older video cards may not offer DisplayPort connections, and some newer gaming monitors may lack HDMI inputs.
DVI
DVI is an older HD standard that's able to transmit video up to 1920x1200 resolution but many older DVI cables can't deliver audio.
HDMI
HDMI has superseded DVI and supports audio transmission. The most modern version is HDMI 2.0, which supports 4K video up to 60FPS and HDR. It also supports 21:9 aspect ratio monitors and dual video streams.
HDMI 2.1 is on the horizon, however, and will increase bandwidth from 18Gbps to 48GBps. It's a forward-thinking standard that will allow for resolutions up to 10K and frame rates up to 120FPS.
DisplayPort
The latest DisplayPort standard is version 1.4, which enables HDR and supports 8K/60FPS and 4K/120FPS video. DisplayPort 1.4 also supports up to 32 audio channels at a 1536kHz sample rate.
USB and audio jacks
Some monitors offer USB ports and audio jacks. They are appreciated since they will allow you to easily connect gaming controllers, thumb drives, and headsets.
Adjustable Stand And VESA Mounts
One area that many people overlook when purchasing a monitor is the quality of its stand. A good stand will not only allow you to shift the panel up and down, but also tilt it forwards and backwards.
Some monitor stands will also allow you to turn the display 90 degrees so you can get more vertical length when reading long articles. This orientation can also allow you to save desk space.
It's also a good idea to look for monitors that support the VESA mounting standard. This will ensure that it's compatible with a wide array of mounts that will allow you to attach it to walls.
