Thoughts on what Vader wanted with Obi-Wan in OWK

(For all Obi-Wan series haters, this isn’t for you.)

I had really high expectations for the Obi-Wan Series and they were all surpassed. It always felt to me that something was missing between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, because what Vader and Obi-Wan were saying to each other never really fit together, but I couldn’t figure out why. When Vader said “Obi-Wan once thought as you do” in Return of the Jedi, I could never figure out what he was talking about.

But the Obi-Wan series answered all my questions, especially on what Vader feels towards Obi-Wan.

I’ve seen a lot of people assuming Vader was trying to kill Obi-Wan, and some complaining about how Vader wasn’t being portrayed properly because he was being “stupid” sometimes when he should have realistically killed Obi-Wan. For some reason they’re automatically assuming that because Vader killed him in A New Hope, that means that’s what he always wanted to do.

The third episode showed very obviously that Vader does **not** want Obi-Wan dead. He could easily have killed him the fight if he wanted, or let him die in the fire, but he didn’t.

Vader very clearly wanted him alive. He put out that fire almost immediately and told the troopers to bring Obi-Wan to him. He told him “your pain is just beginning” so yeah, he obviously didn’t want him dead.

Repeatedly Vader talks about “destroying “ Obi-Wan and “breaking” him. That’s what Sith say when they want to make someone Fall.

Everything Vader is doing after that very much implies the same, too.

When Obi-Wan said “I will do what I must” implying that it was going to be a fight to the death, the way Vader was standing very much implied he was not happy. There were numerous points in their duel that Vader was clearly holding back, another obvious sign that he did **not** want to kill him.

He said “but you are still weak” which is how Sith always refer to the Light Side, before he threw him in that pit, and started burying him. Vader knows Obi-Wan well enough to know there’s no way he was going to die from that.

But doing that **did** work in making Obi-Wan very angry, and close to (if not actually) drawing on the Dark Side. Obi-Wan was drawing on his attachments to get out of that situation, and that is very Dark Side. Jedi are always supposed to be calm, and definitely never draw on their attachments to give them power.

Vader said that he killed Anakin, the same way he will “destroy” Obi-Wan. There’s nothing that can mean except that he wanted to turn him. That was how Vader “destroyed” Anakin, after all.

And from there, it’s pretty easy to see why Sidious was acting how he was in that final scene with Vader. He asked him if he was sure his feelings on the matter were clear, the exact same thing he asked Vader when he was obsessing over finding and turning Luke.

And he said “perhaps your feelings for your old master have left you weakened.” And that means he obviously knew that Vader still cared about Obi-Wan. Even if you could argue that he partly wanted to turn Obi-Wan out of revenge, it was also clearly for a similar reason that he did with Luke. As far as Sith are concerned, that’s kind of a Dark Side form of affection, after all. xD At least Vader’s when it comes to his family. So yeah, of course Sidious was very unhappy about that.

That much is obvious anyway from Vader calling for Obi-Wan at the end when he left him again. I’ve seen some people claim he was “screaming his name out of hatred” and by the way, that literally makes no sense. There was so absolutely no hatred in his tone. He sounded **broken**. If that were true, why didn’t he say “Kenobi?” Also WHO WASTES THEIR BREATH SCREAMING IN HATRED WHEN THEY CAN HARDLY BREATH?

And of course after Vader had to immediately tell Sidious that “Kenobi means nothing” and stop looking for him if he didn’t want to face the consequences.

That pretty much answers why Vader killed Obi-Wan in A New Hope. He knew he couldn’t turn Obi-Wan anymore and he knew when they met again, one of them was going to come out dead. From Vader’s point of view, Obi-Wan already made it abundantly clear that he didn’t consider Vader even worth his time enough to kill.

And for the record, I think it was just plain too painful for him watch Obi-Wan walk away for a third time.

The Obi-Wan Series also really explains why Vader seemed more numb and resigned when they fought each other in A New Hope, instead of angry, which just doesn’t seem very likely if this is the first time they’ve seen each other since Mustafar. That never made sense to me, even before. In the end, Vader did try to escape Sidious, so he went to the only other person he could fathom calling master, and we all know how that turned out. No wonder he seemed so robotic and just blinding following orders by ANH. He didn’t have any hopes beyond Sidious, until he heard about Luke again, and that “spark” you could say, of resistance, was back again.

also, about Anakin—I distinctly remember realizing when I was first watching Star Wars that part of what makes Anakin’s relationship with Obi-Wan so compelling is that his love for Obi-Wan is as much forbidden as his love for Padme.

I mean, here’s this kid who’s too old to be trained as a Jedi, not because he’ll be prideful or have to catch up or anything, but because he’s old enough to have already learned how to get attached. And the Council was right; he never, ever unlearns that.

But the very first person aside from Padme that Padawan Anakin got attached to was Obi-Wan. And so all through his training, as he’s growing up and Obi-Wan is growing up too, Anakin is thinking “this is my guy. This is my older brother, this is my best friend, this is the only father I’ve ever known” and just recently discovered that someone like that (Qui-Gonn) can be killed and ripped away from you.

All through his training, that fierce attachment is growing, even more steadily than his love for Padme because he’s never separate from Obi-Wan…and the difference is, Obi-Wan shuts it down. It’s obvious that they love one another like brothers, but Obi-Wan never says it until Anakin is lying like chopped-up charred hibachi on the banks of Mustafar.

I mean, imagine having a father or older brother who you know loves you, but who refuses to say so? Except through his actions, almost in spite of himself?

And then imagine yourself as someone who never gets on board and believes in the code that says you can’t attach? So you know that your father-brother-figure is a hypocrite, about, like, the thing you think is the most important and also the stupidest part of the code?

Because he can’t say it! Because he’s supposed to be teaching Anakin not to get attached—what’s he gonna do, tell Anakin “I’m so glad you’re safe” every time they escape an adventure? Tell Anakin he doesn’t know what he’d do if he lost him? Remind Anakin that he cares? And then say “but attachment is bad. Trust the Force.” No, he’s not going to do that. He’s going to keep that aloof-thing going, even though Anakin knows Obi-Wan loves him.

So Anakin, a very dramatic young man who likes his declarations of affection super up-front, never gets that from Obi-Wan. And he’s so sensitive in the Force, and they’re so connected for such a long time—he must be feeling, constantly, that Obi-Wan loves him too. But Obi-Wan never says it. And even though Anakin knows why, it’s a constant source of frustration, because Anakin doesn’t actually respect the code and he doesn’t see why Obi-Wan does.

So constantly, Anakin feels like Obi-Wan is hiding affection for him, or withholding it. Keeping something good for him back. He’s feeling like Obi-Wan is, on some level, a little two-faced. He’s feeling like Obi-Wan’s willing enough to save his life and stick up for him—clearly Obi-Wan is attached—but coming out and saying it? Admitting it: “hey little bro, I know you’re attached to me but you have to stop; it’s not the Jedi way. I know how you feel, I’m attached to you too—we’ll just have to figure that out together?”

No, he never does that. Not until it’s way too late, and Anakin has already conflated Obi-Wan’s refusal to express their bond out loud with how deceitful and two-faced the Jedi are, and they have to be enemies.

which, you know, understandable, considering who Obi-Wan is as a character. but still.

Yeesh. I love this character, I feel like he was when I first started thinking about the tangled web of character motivations and conflicts, but the poor guy.

Me, forcibly making Darth Vader sit down in a school desk: it wasn’t your fault.

Me: Star Wars is a lot of things, but it is a tragedy and amazingly philosophical, and you are one of the reasons for that. Because you are a good person, who does good things, and although you had flaws like everyone else, you would’ve been great. And that’s why it’s a tragedy because you’re always a slave- to Watto, to Sidious, to the grand plan; you were an amazing and upstanding person who was put in circumstances that made you into a monster because any one would’ve killed and any Jedi would’ve fallen and it wasn’t fair.

Darth Vader: I killed my wife, that is unforgivable

Me: because of anger issues and instability (and many mental issue(s)), but those were all things that normal people have albeit not often to your degree but that’s because they’re aloud to go to therapy for it, they’re aloud to express their emotions. The Jedi were corrupt which stopped you from having any skill to manage these problems normally, not helped by the fact Palpatine encouraged your flaws. And this is ignoring the whole untreated PTSD, child slave, war issue.

Darth Vader: do not resolve me of the guilt because-

Me: I’m not! Darth Vader is a villain, but my point is: he’s not the villain, he never wanted to be a villain, he was manipulated/groomed into becoming a villain, and while you shouldn’t be forgiven from what you did we cannot ignore the situation that caused you to do it. You should not go free, you should not be resolved of all guilt, but there’s also the fact that if you had been in a good and safe environment with a therapist and your family and you weren’t in constant danger, you wouldn’t have done any of that- if you had it would’ve been to a much smaller scale, you would’ve hit Padmé at absolute worst and you’d regret it as much as you regret killing her- which you didn’t by the way. Okay I’m repeating myself at this point, just- go get therapy, stop killing your coworkers, kill Sidious, pass control of the galaxy onto someone who will make it better like Mon Mothma or Bail Organa, and take a vacation to someplace where there isn’t danger and go to therapy. I’m sure your kids will at least give you a chance if you explain.

A/N: HELLO MY LOVES!! i am so so sooo sorry for my long ass break- school has been insane; im taking 19 credit hours and have three labs on dif days 😭/ last week my grandpa died and then my car broke down… so it’s been a time. anyways!! im back now for the time being!! i hope you all have been doing well and are excited for the stories to progress!! thank you all for the support and for being so patient w me :)) i love u all

Unexpected guests, a tedious day… how will anakin react?

There was a knock on the door and Anakin begrudgingly hoisted himself up to go see who it was. 

He opened the door and was met with Ben, Satine, Ash, and their other friend Rex. 

“Surprise!” they said in unison.

You felt a wave of anxiety- you knew Anakin wasn’t fond of surprises (look how he reacted to your pregnancy!) But you also understood the gesture everyone wanted to make. 

“Happy Birthday Skyguy!” Ahsoka exclaimed once Anakin stepped aside to allow them inside. 

“It was Ahsoka’s idea by the way” Ben said to Anakin as he patted him on the shoulder.

“Look, you wouldn’t have let us celebrate if we asked- and if we planned something you wouldn’t come. So this was the only choice!” Ahsoka defended in a mock-sad voice. 

Anakin seemed perplexed- almost frustrated, so you were ready to be on damage control once he finally responded. 

“Thanks guys, I really appreciate it”

Huh?

“Not what I was expecting, but I'll take it!” Ash exclaimed. 

“Wow Anakin, that's some real character development” Rex joked as he placed the chocolate cake on the counter. 

“Yea” Anakin blushed. 

“y/n” Ben greeted, “how are you doing my dear? Is the baby doing well?”.

“Hey Ben! We’re both doing just fine, except that this little one has decided that around midnight is the best time to start kicking” you joked (it really was a pain though; you weren’t getting good sleep at all). 

“And is Skyguy tending to your needs kindly?” Ahsoka added with an arched brow. 

“Yes, Ani has been so sweet; making me weird combinations to satisfy my cravings” you laughed, rubbing his back. 

“Of course,” he said back, eyes full of sincerity. 

“Damn, y/n. He must really like you because he hates cooking. When we bunked together, I had to bribe him to make me a PB & J” Rex added with a boisterous laugh. 

“I never said I didn’t like to cook, maybe I just didn’t like to cook when it was for you” Anakin quipped back. 

“Look at you Sky guy! Being a good boyfriend and all '' Ahsoka joked. 

You and Anakin hadn’t really talked about what the relationship officially was since the fight; it just never really came up. But hearing him being referred to as your boyfriend again made your heart skip a beat. 

“Is this everyone?” you asked Ben as Ahsoka and Rex continued joking with anakin.

“Yes, we didn’t want to overwhelm him, plus the last time we did a surprise thing with a bunch of our friends, he wasn’t thrilled” Ben chuckled. 

You, Ben, and Satine stayed on the side line and observed the other’s banter. You couldn’t help the soft smile that found its way onto your face as you watched his eyes crinkled when he laughed. 

Satine noticed your adoring gaze and nudged Ben’s shoulder; she nodded her head towards you and the pair smiled. 

Ben gave his Fiance a look and she nodded. 

“You really do care for him, don't you?” 

Ben’s voice grabbed your attention from Anakin.

Of course you did, but you didn't want to sound childish and too forgiving to Satine and Ben. 

“Yea” you tilted your head to the side and sighed, “I do. I know he has his flaws but so do I”.

The pair listened intently, “I know some may see me as too forgiving, but I believe Anakin is a good man. A man deserving of love; love that I want to give him.”

“Maybe some of my optimism is the baby, but I wholeheartedly believe that we would still be as happy as how we were before, if I never got pregnant”. You explained, placing a gentle hand over your stomach. 

“Do you think that’s naive of me?” you asked worriedly.

Ben scratched his beard in contemplation and Satine shook her head. 

“I do not think you are naive for having hope in the person you love.” her smooth voice assured you. 

“I have known Anakin for many years and rarely have I witnessed him care for another as he does for you.” Ben added.

“Of course, he loved Padme at a time, but even when they were in the prime of their relationship, he never really actively bettered himself. They would get into little spats over repetitive things that Anakin promised he would fix, but his resolutions never really stuck.”

“Though…” Satine interjected, “I do see a change in his nature since you’ve been with him”. 

In that moment you locked eyes with Anakin across the room and he winked at you; no matter how long you’d been together, he never failed to make you blush. 

You turned back around and smiled to the couple, “Thank you, that really means the world”.

“Alright, everyone! We’re gonna light the candles!” Ahsoka shouted with a jovial tone. 

Everyone headed towards the kitchen and gathered around the counter; Anakin was already standing by the cake (which looked quite scrumptious), so you walked up beside him and gave him a small side hug. 

“Hey princess” he smiled as he leaned in to kiss your forehead.

Everyone was still chatting amongst themselves and Ahsoka was looking for the lighter she unfortunately misplaced, so no one noticed Anakin wrap around a gloved hand to lightly squeeze your ass. Your eyes widened and you pinched his side lightly, making him let out a small laugh. 

“Found it!” Ahsoka exclaimed, excitedly holding her beat up lighter. 

“You coulda, just asked me for mine, y’know?” Rex offered.

“Why didn’t you offer it when I was ripping my bag apart?” Ahsoka sighed, fakely annoyed.

Everyone laughed before Ahsoka opened the cake box and lit the lighter. 

“Alright, Skyguy! This is your moment, better wish for something good“.

“Don’t worry Snipps, I’ve got it ready” he joked, pointing to his head. 

“Alrighty” she said with a sing-songy voice before lighting the candles.

Rex started the “happy birthday” song and everyone joined in to celebrate the man in the middle. 

Anakin blushed ever so slightly before giving his cunning smirk and gently blowing out the candles in single blow. 

Everyone cheered and Ben handed him a knife to make the first slice. Anakin’s hand slowly gripped around the hilt of the knife before he brought it down into the soft top layer of icing. After the pieces were distributed, everyone found somewhere to sit and began conversing with whoever was close by.

Anakin sat in his normal spot on his sofa and you invited yourself to the seat beside him after he nodded you over. 

You sighed as you sat on the plush couch; the weight of the baby was really getting to you so it felt nice to be off of your feet for a moment. Anakin set his plate down onto the end table to his left, then promptly draped his stiff arm over your shoulders to draw you closer. 

“Hi” you smiled, looking into his beautiful blue eyes.

“Hi” he smiled back, leaning in to gently kiss you. 

The two of you sat quietly for a moment just observing the others.

“What did you wish for?” you eventually said.

Anakin sighed and began to speak, “Well, I-”

You gently (but quickly) placed your hand over his mouth, making him confused.

“wha-?”

“Shh, shh It was a test!” you giggled. “Don’t ya know that if you tell your wishes, they won’t come true” you smiled.

He rolled his blue eyes with a smile and playfully obliged, “alright, if you say so. But it better come true, now that you said that” he winked.

“I’m sure it will, the birthday wish is a sacred tradition” you joked as you batted your lashes at him. 

“Of course it is,” he playfully responded.

The party continued until Rex realized he had to be at work in 5 hours; Anakin thanked everyone and they all left with wide smiles. THankfully there wasn’t much of a mess, so all you had to do was put the leftover cake in the fridge. 

Once everything was taken care of, you took a seat on the couch next to Anakin once again. You leaned into his chest and ran your fingers through his sandy locks. 

“I didn’t think you would be this thrilled by a surprise” you said after a few moments of silence.. 

He grabbed his soda and drank some before speaking, “Well with all that’s going on- who’s to say I’ll get another one of these?”.

His grim reminder made your stomach drop. The macabre threat of Anakin’s eventual death always hung over your head, but the joyous events and lifted spirits of the evening must have kicked it to the back burner for a moment. 

You bit your lip and leaned over to embrace him. 

The two of you sat there for a while until you felt droplets landing on your shoulder. You pulled away to see Anakin’s blue eyes filled with a sea of sorrow. 

“Oh, Ani…” you sighed, pulling him into your chest.

“I’m scared, y/n”.

You had nothing to say because you were just as scared; so instead you held him as tightly as you could.
