How does a mustache go through a wellies mask?

You know, I started answering this on the presumption that it was just one of those Left 4 Dead rescue closet things where you're not supposed to question this too hard or examine the logistics too closely. Obviously the Happy Face mask defies the physics of what we know and therefore must be made of some Wellingtonian miracle material that allows it to move with the face while also being stiff enough to force a smile and (theoretically) house electronics for further happiness enforcement.

(I also started answering this thinking it'd be a quickie, which is why I let it jump the queue, but then I went and made four gifs for it. lol.)

But actually, this does have an answer. A nicely nuanced answer even!

"How does a mustache go through a wellies mask?"

It doesn't. For most Wellies, it's just stuck on.

Murray: Is that a silly Nick Lightbearer mustache you're wearing?

Nick: Sir?

Murray: Against regulations. Take it off. I won't have staff acting like that cheeky, good-for-nothing--

Aside from this little bit of insight from Lightbearer, this is one of those things where I kind of feel like the nuts and bolts of the game's design can inform and speak on the content.

Which is to say, with very little exception, Wellies and Wastrels are frankensteined together out of a small stock of randomized parts. You literally could have a Wellie and Wellette paper doll like in How to Be Happy because that's precisely how an NPC is built in the game.

You start with a base (Wellie or Wastrel, male or female), give them a skin color, give them an outfit appropriate to their location, a hairstyle, and then you can accessorize with hats, glasses, and (for the men, Nick Lightbearer fans, or that one girl in the peep show booth at the Reform Club) a mustache. And that all works very well with the game's commentary on social conformity. How fun!

And if this is true, then most Wellies don't have mustaches under their masks because the base model Wellie doesn't (in fact, the base model Wellie doesn't have a maskless model at all, which will be important here in a second.)

That's kind of a tenuous answer, but I can do you one further on it.

So in the game, we rarely ever see anyone remove their mask. And when we do, it's almost always off screen. There are exactly four times this happens in the whole of the game:

When our main characters do it, it's always as prelude to spinning out of the first person camera we've known the entire game and into third so we can finally see them as they are rather than as who they've presented themselves to be.

The fourth and last time we see masks being taken off is here, at the end of the epilogue. And as you can clearly see, we don't actually see the masks coming off the faces because the models don't have maskless faces. The cinema trick of using the next shot to bridge the gap still tells the story without actually showing that though. (You can also see here that though their faces have masks, being part of their base model, some of their hair - a separate object attached - didn't spawn in, leaving them bald).

But the first - and only time - we physically see a character remove his mask, he just so happens to have a mustache.

So... you're going to have to listen to my dissertation on the use of illusion in videogmes because I've already decided to talk about it and I've got the visual aides together when I thought there actually wasn't a clear answer to the question of mustaches. But if you didn't like that kinda thing, you wouldn't be here so.

Look carefully at how Chief Constable Peters removes his mask. Both hands from the left side. Try it out for yourself; it's fucking awkward isn't it?

When Arthur removes his mask, he does so with both hands on either side of his face. When Sally does it, it's with one hand from the top. But again, we only see these from the first person view.

Peters removes his mask in this way because he's actually performing a magic trick. Not, like, narratively. It's game dev slight of hand.

Two things are happening in this split second:

First, Peters' model is being swapped for his alternate without a mask. I'm fairly certain the entire model is being swapped and not just the texture because the masks do have shape of their own when sculpted onto the characters. Arthur, Sally, and Victoria also have two separate models for when they're wearing their masks or not and Peters does as well. Here, those models of Peters are being swapped, but the only discernible difference between them is where his mask would lie, so he's obscuring that line with his hands so the swap is otherwise imperceptible. (When Arthur remembers Peters at the train station a few moments later, then it's just the texture (the coloring) being eased into the younger version of Peters' same maskless model.)

Second, a physical object of Peters' mask is also magically appearing behind his hands so that he can now be holding it.

And this is where we get our answer.

Peters does have a unique model for his mask and as we can see, there's molding inside to accommodate his mustache but it remains solid. So there's a fake mustache on the front and room for his real one underneath.

You know what though? Peters complains that his mask is itchy. And despite hours in the game, we never hear that complaint from anyone else. Wastrels console themselves that they don't have to wear that stupid mask anymore and there's that letter to Uncle Jack about the husband who won't take it off to go to sleep and how weird it is, but we never hear complaints about the comfort of the masks from anyone else but Peters.

Peters' mask is also custom. Wellies all share the same face because they buy stock masks. To have a custom one is a bit of a status symbol normally. But why would a chief constable need a custom mask?

For the same reason he'd wear a mustache under one.

It is narratively important that Peters removes his mask at this point in the game, when Arthur has finally arrived at the crossroads of the rest of his life. That he does is a signal to Arthur that there are no pretenses here; that this is the point where he may choose to remove his own mask as well.

Chief Constable Peters wears a mustache under his mask because his mustache is part of who he actually is. Before the tanks, before the Executive Committee, before the day at the train station, Peters knew who he was then and remains one of the only people in Wellington Wells who has never lost sight of who he is since. He uses this power now to help people see who they are, regardless of who they find themselves to be. This is why he gives you the choice of Oblivion at the end.

Y'see, some people find they are stronger than they ever supposed. Some people can let go of the confabulations that have comforted them. Some make choices that surprise even themselves. But perhaps these people are not you.

And so, a mustache even if its itchy.
