"Vi saved Jinx but Jinx could not save Isha."
While we're here, let's talk about that actually. Slams my hate and anger on the table.
Let's TALK about how Vi and Jinx, and Jayce and Viktor keep saving each other just to live longer enough to HATE each other.
For the longest time, no since forever, Jinx has been unable to pull the trigger on her sister. She gets nervous any time anyone else points a gun at Vi. She holds on to Vi as a lifeline. No matter how deranged Jinx gets, she will never hurt Vi.
Viktor was also the person Jayce abandoned everything for in his attempt to try to revive him. Just for Jayce to go mad and do that.
I'm just. Why are these people always desperately doing everything that they can do for the sake of the other, just to lose them in the process? WHY?!

super fun how you can see the way the writers switched-up on vi's character through literally like. two lines. one from s1 and one from s2
line from s1 [paraphrased]: "we don't mix. oil and water" from the break-up scene
line from s2: "i am the dirt under your nails, cupcake"
oil i ascribe specifically to vi and i think that story does too, as the only time it's previously mentioned is by vander's when emphasizing the importance of vi's role to the kids that follow her around.
"you ask for a fire, they show up with oil" (also paraphrased). you could characterize oil as something inherently impure when compared to water and that it's used to degrade her but oil in the earlier way it was mentioned contextualizes it as a spark that lights a fire and is ultimately useful in the undercity. water as ascribed to caitlyn when looking at oil as a spark can be seen as pointing to an inherent unavoidable nature to extinguish vi's fire but whatever. that is not the point of this.
when vi compares them to oil and water it emphasizes the separation of the two and that they'll never mix, but something to note is that oil sits atop water after settling when someone attempts to mix them together. when vi takes agency to separate herself from caitlyn she compares herself to oil, this metaphor does not situate vi as someone lower than caitlyn despite the inherent purity associated with water versus perceptions of oil as dirty
the line from s2, though, spits on this by directly characterizing vi as dirt, to start off with. then in her specifically being under caitlyn's nails, she places herself as physically lower than caitlyn. like, she describes herself as this dirty inconvenience that can not be dug out. very stark contrast from the way she displays her agency in the break-up scene from s1.
i think the lack of care the writers put into her character in season 2 can be seen in much larger ways but its also shown through something as small as the non-living things vi compares herself to

The thing about Jayce and Mel is that like. She does not view him as an investment. That is just certifiably false. You have to skip over all her scenes to believe that.
In the beginning she does! She absolutely does! She conceives of their relationship as a business one - where she makes profit off his inventions, and he profits from her business and political acumen, both monetarily and powerwise. And overall, she believes she's fulfilled her half of the bargain.
It's only when he comes back to her after Viktor gets sick that she realizes he believes this is something deeper. And it's notable that she responds to that emotion - she opens up about herself too, comforts him, and expresses real emotionality about it. It's then that we see his ideals start to influence her - especially reawakening in her a desire for nonviolence.
Wanting to do things peacefully is something that's been with her since she was a child. It is what guides her away from Noxus, because her pacifism just does not fit there. It's why she loved Piltover so - they aren't a violent expansionist empire, which is a really low bar, but that's what she's grown up in.
She never finds the violence in Zaun, because she never goes looking for it. This is her fault, and her flaw, let me make that clear. She has some of the most power in the city, and should know about what kind of violence is holding up, and work to resolve it, truly. But she doesn't, because she's focused on her own exploits, and has so insulated herself away from the class struggle that it does not register for her until it grows to violence.
And then, once that violence comes, she maintains that pacifism with an iron grip, more than Jayce himself. It is Jayce who constructs (almost) all the HexTech weapons that are used in the Undercity, in Caitlyn's police squadron. He betrays the oaths that he's made to his partner, where Mel keeps the promise she's made to her's. She is the only politician left to try to tamp down on the worst of Ambessa's instincts, and her removal from Piltover is what marks it's descent into militarism.
She is ultimately a complicated woman, with a bunch of interesting relationships to Piltover and Zaun. I think you can divide Piltover as a city neatly between her, Jayce, and Caitlyn - each of them standing for some of Piltover's best instincts, and some of its worst.
#telespeak#mel medarda#jayce talis#It's why I find Mel discourse so tiring. Like.#This is a show full of complicated characters.#If we are willing to look beyond Victor emptying people and Caitlyn becoming a puppet dictator and Jayce literally killing a child#and see them as full and complicated people who are trying their best with worldviews that are influenced by their circumstances#why is she where we stop. I mean I know why. but still.#I don't even like MelJay. But like. It's there for a reason.#sidebar I find the notion that Jayce of all people should hold her accountable for Zaun just. exhausting.#Jayce is a piltoverian through and through. He loves someone from Zaun yes but that relationship is soaked with casual classism#There is a lot to be said about Mel ignoring Zaun! But he does too#it's something she reflects in him#The biggest critique of her arc I have is that someone in Zaun shoud've taken her to task#(My vote is on Vi just because she should get to confront the head of the faceless machine that's produced every tragedy in her life)#(But any Zaunite would do honestly. Just not heckin. Jayce.)#I do want to make a post about how Jayce Mel and Cait kinda cover all of Piltover's values#Cait as their enforcer arm Jayce as their scientist and Mel as their businesswoman/politician#but that's for another post. really this is two posts squeezed into one#I am just exhausting seeing people who do not care about Mel in her tag. Like. She exists outside of JayVik. the show is not subtle with th#arcane

this has probably been said before but i think it would've been more fun if Mark Hoffman didn't murder a man in cold blood before Seth Baxter and had instead gone completely off the moral rails by the end of VII, rampaging through the precinct with a smile on his face - I think that would've hammered home Hoffman’s spiral from “not a true killer” to someone no longer constrained by the moral framework that we saw deteriorating throughout previous films in the series

The Demon’s Head had no need for such trivial things as vanity. His clothes were fine because they lent well to the weather and his own movement. His hair was shorn only by his own hand and kept to uphold sacred traditions. He wore no makeup, had no need for it. Thus, Damian grew up in a palace utterly devoid of mirrors.
The only time he ever saw his reflection was grossly distorted in the shimmering surface of the Lazarus Pit.
“This is your room,” Father had said to him, and while he was unused to the four poster canopy bed and the closet of pressed clothes, he would make do. He would not fail Father simply because he was unused to a situation. A good son would adapt. So adapt Damian would.
When he first saw the creature out of the corner of his eye, his instinct was to draw his sword and assume his standard fighting position. The creature copied him as if exactly in sync with him, even drew the same sword in the same way. Damian halted, waiting for an advance.
It did not come.
He waited for some moments, and then inched forward. The creature inched forward at an exact even pace, matching every one of his moves down to the minute twitch. This, Damian realized, must be a reflective surface. But something about the image in the surface seemed… odd. Damian lowered his sword and crept closer, quietly relieved when the creature did the same.
His reflection, this mirrored image of himself, it wasn’t… correct. All his life his mother had told him that he looked exactly like his Father, but his Father did not look like this. The creature in the reflection had slitted pupils, deep glowing green eyes, and markings all over its face. It had fangs, long and pointed, and sharp ears that stuck out from the sides of its head. It was… grotesque. Awful. Damian had the distinct urge to smash the mirror to pieces, all at once convinced that this had been the reason for both the lack of mirrors at Grandfather’s palace as well as why they had sent him away. It was to hide his shame, this abomination that he was.
But Damian couldn’t bring himself to do it. Couldn’t destroy something valuable in Father’s home on the very first night he’d been invited to stay. Regardless of what Father had said, nothing in this room belonged to Damian. It could not be tampered with. But the reflection… it could not remain where someone else might see his shame.
In a fit of inspiration, Damian grabbed a fresh linen out of the bottom of the wardrobe and hastily draped it over the grotesque image. It covered the mirror well, exposing no part of it, and he nodded contently at his work.
There, now no one had to know. He simply needed to… avoid all other mirrors in the Manor. That shouldn’t be too difficult.
Adapt, Damian reminded himself. He would adapt.

I think Vi is way too smart to not know she's intelligent but is also so self-deprecating that she believes that she's stupid.

"Silco didn't create Jinx, you did" lives in my mind rent free because throughout season 1, Vi has been convincing herself that Silco is the obstacle preventing her from getting Powder back. She's traumatized and guilt-ridden. When Vi is traumatized, she simplifies things as a response. She has to believe that getting her sister back is that simple. But when Silco is finally dead, Powder doesn't come back to her. In fact Silco's death is what solidifies Jinx's decision to be Jinx (the complete Jinx aka Jinx + Powder, not the broken version of her that she tried to erase Powder from).
And that's likely why Vi switches on her so quickly. By the time season 2 starts she's fully on board with Piltover wanting to kill Jinx and when she confronts her in ep.3 she says Powder is dead and they're not sisters anymore. Which is wild considering just a few days ago she was reassuring her that they'll always be sisters.
I think Vi meant all of it. At the time she really did want Caitlyn and the enforcers to kill Jinx. But that's because she's still just as traumatized and guilt-ridden as she was before. She can't deal with the fact that Jinx herself is the real reason she can never get Powder back. And as I said, Vi simplifies things as a trauma response. However if they had actually succeeded in killing Jinx, I think Vi would live in regret and self-hatred forever. What someone wants when they're traumatized and hurt is not what they want forever, and Vi does love her sister.
