I'm feeling really angsty tonight (post-vacation comedown maybe?) and can't stop thinking about my 'they go back to the Arctic' fitzier fic.
Cause like...actual Francis Rawdon Moira Croizer was Not Particularly Good at being on land. He fled to the Arctic again partly because of that and, one assumes, partly because of his heartbreak via Sophia Cracroft.
And it's astonishing how many real life Arctic disaster survivors WENT BACK. They couldn't live in regular society anymore, and there was something that just...drew them back, inexorably.
It's the PERFECT setup for a Francis POV angsty pining unrequited doomed-in-love fic where he attempts to flee from James, his heartbreak, and his own inadequacies/failings by taking another commission to find the Passage, and he tries like hell to avoid taking James with him but James is strangely persistent and public/official sentiment seals the deal. James will be his second, and as it turns out the love isn't quite as unrequited as Francis thinks...
Anyway I've been collecting quotes that fit The Vibe and here's what I've got so far:
“I believe that every man who has once learned the secrets of the wild polar wilderness and its savage joys will always long to return to it, finding there a spell, an inspiration, that makes all other kinds of life seem insipid.” ~Frederick Cook, Atchinson Globe, 18 Sept. 1897 (tumblr post link)
God, God, what do I do after so much survival? - Traci Brimhall, Vive Vive (tumblr post link)
“I went into the desert to forget about you. But the sand was the color of your hair. The desert sky was the color of your eyes. There was nowhere I could go that wouldn’t be you.” Into the Sands, as quoted in Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

Today, as a treat, I am going to walk on well-tread ground and rant about how Grantaire symbolizes the People of France. And how it is this that makes this chapter so sublime.
Three chapters before this one, Hugo speaks about how Revolution does not always find a welcome audience. How, without the People. an emeute is just that. It may have loft ideals attached to it, but it must fail. If the people aren't ready, if they lock their doors and rail at the revolutionaries outside in fear and apathy and anger, then nothing can be done.
Hugo admits that this is natural. We must let humans care about their own lives and not just the future. All of this can be handled, as long as in the end Progress continues.
"A people, like a star, has the right of eclipse. And all is well, provided the light returns and the eclipse does not degenerate into night. Dawn and resurrection are synonyms. The reappearance of the light is identical with the persistence of the self." [5.1.20]
This is reflective of Grantaire's apathy, his defining trait as a nihilist. It also reflects Hugo's implication that this is not Grantaire's natural state of being. Remember:
"Besides Enjolras, Grantaire became someone again." [3.4.1]
Not only does this tie Grantaire's existence inextricably with the Revolution, but it implies that this existence is superior, is more natural than his current one.
Grantaire also has more interactions with the People than the rest of les Amis do. See when he was meant to stir up revolutionary ideals and instead went to play dominoes. Yes he failed, but he also reflects the prevailing thought. France was not ready for a revolution. Enjolras ignored this. Lofty ideas could not reconcile themselves to the reality.
All this paints a very bleak picture of course. And yet, in Grantaire's death we get that undeniable hope, which makes it all so beautiful.
We, as real people reading this book, understand that Grantaire is probably still drunk. Yet Hugo impressing upon, insisting upon Grantaire's clarity is so crucial. This, at the moment of his death, is the most lucid Grantaire has been.
Another thing that strikes me, is that thought Grantaire asks permission to die with Enjolras, he seals his own death warrant before doing so, by crying out 'Vive la Republique.' He doesn't actually ask permission to join the movement.
When the People rise, they will do so spontaneously. That crucial ingredient that is missing amongst the population has been lit in Grantaire, and it is a sign of what is to come, it is hope. He's leading the pack with his singular death, and like he measured the mood beforehead, his death can be (and to me is) read as an omen of what is to come. The eclipse - in Hugo's words - will end.
Of course, asking permission to die with Enjolras is also crucial. Not only because of the poetry of them being narrative foils, but because it works as a surrogate for the people of Paris acknowledging the bravery of those who push forward towards Progress while they refuse to budge. Again, as Hugo writes:
"However that may be, even when fallen, particularly when fallen, august are the ones who, all around the world, with eyes fixed on France, struggle for the great work with the inflexible logic of the ideal; they give their life as a pure fit for progress; they accomplish the will of Providence; they perform a religious act." [5.1.20]
Through Grantaire's death, the People come out of their fear and recognize this. Not literally, but in spirit. And if not to all of us, then to Enjolras.
Because Enjolras is, of course, crucial to this reading. Speaking of Grantaire as the People when he is merely one of many characters who are the People, it's important to ask for whom is he? Because he's certainly not for Valjean. Or Marius. Or Cosette. Or Javert. Or even the National Guards or the King or perhaps not even to the audience (if you think I'm overdoing it I respect it). But he is to Enjolras.
Enjolras is stoic throughout the whole ordeal. He speaks of glory in death. He is still devoted to his mistress, Patria. And yet his ideals have been shattered. The People were not ready. The Revolution will not come. He will die bravely, but he will have failed.
But then Grantaire stands up and says he's with them and requests permission to die by Enjolras' side.
And in that moment Enjolras' convictions are justified. If someone who has been the object of scorn, who has been apathetic, who has done little at all except annoy Enjolras and fail to stir up revolutionary thought; if Grantaire can rise up and die with him, then others will too. Perhaps not now, but in the future.
Grantaire becomes someone again when he dies next to Enjolras. And someday the people will rise.

Zorro Vive
And vive bien!
So, I've finished Season 1 of the new Zorro show (available through Amazon in the US and most Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries), and I really enjoyed it!
Tumblr media
Without spoilers, I'd say that its main qualities are that it's fun and earnest and more cosmopolite in its retailing of the old story. It doesn't take itself too seriously, there's plenty of little homages to previous adaptations. There's many interesting and well-developed characters - of all genders and ethnicities.
Tumblr media
It's (literally) colorful, with a comic/pulp feel that suits it well. There's been a true care brought to the action scenes, and OMG the night scenes are damn well lit. It's rare enough nowadays so points for that. Generally, the show is quite beautiful.
More spoilery thoughts under the cut.
I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from a new show. It's always hard to bring new canon to something so established and so iconic. And even though the Disney show is *not* the original canon, for a lot of people, it is.
But as a principle, same as for book adaptations or remakes, I'm not opposed to variations or changes. As long as they're good changes.
And I have to say, the vast majority of the changes in the new Zorro show, to me, were actually good changes, or necessary improvements for today's audience.
The most obvious is giving back a real voice to the Natives and not sugarcoating the colonization aspect. There's tension there. Natives are angry. But as years passed, people born there consider themselves "true Californians". Natives aren't just background characters or peons anymore. They're a driving plot force. They're shown in their own environment, with their own rites (I don't know enough about Natives of this area to know how accurate it is, but it felt a lot more authentic and respectful to me than other versions).
Tumblr media
I do like the idea that the Zorro character comes from the Native culture, and that it's been passed on from one person to the next. Though it also brings my one big issue with the show: Diego becoming Zorro reads a lot like "a white dude steals a Native heritage." And yes, it's symbolic, and yes the fox spirit chose him, Diego didn't pick him, but still. Given that the audience is meant to support Diego (who really is a sweet guy!), that the narrative keeps showing us that Nah-Lin is wrong and should accept it, given the colonization context of that story, it's sitting a bit wrong with me.
This aside, I do like the exploration of revenge vs. justice, violence vs. a more measured response, in the face of adversity. When a few months back, the tagline "revenge is personal, justice is for all" appeared on the first poster, I wasn't sure what to think. I don't like revenge-driven characters. It's cliché and wrong. But the fact that the show precisely explored that, both with Diego and Nah-Lin, was actually quite interesting.
Diego, as I said, is a decent guy. A sweet boy really, vaguely immature originally but having to mature really fast, as the death of his father, the business of the rancho, the Zorro thing and Lolita's wedding are all dropping on him at once. Miguel Bernardeau is a clear departure from most of the previous Zorros, who were played by older actors, giving a more "adult" vibe to the character, but given he's supposed to be fresh out of college and out of his element, Bernardeau's more juvenile features fit the character well.
Tumblr media
Nah-Lin is a lot angrier, and while in the context of the story, she's shown to be going at it the wrong way, all that anger *is* justified, and not something that can just be brushed off. Peace can't come easy when you anger people that way.
And you know who else I really liked? That damn Capitan Monasterio! Who would have thought LOL No, but seriously. Not sure why they named him that way. He was actually more of a Sergeant Garcia (or Mendoza from the 1990 show) than a Monastario. Obviously without the comic relief and cutely incompetent side of the character, but as the character who is a decent guy stuck between a rock and a hard place, serving a tyrannic boss and chasing a heroic outlaw that he may not hate that much.
Tumblr media
I also really liked what they did with Lolita. An opinionated young lady that throws away all the corseting conventions of her time is always very relatable to me. Also, I just love her fashion sense. I wasn't sure what they were going to do with that impossible love triangle (I thought for a long time the wedding wouldn't actually happen). I wouldn't have thought they'd have Lolita figure it out, but I'm glad she did.
I'm glad they kept Bernardo, the mute confident. And I love Mei, too. The dynamic between the three of them (with Diego) is great!
Also, it's great to finally have a Spanish-speaking production, and have the characters speaking in Spanish, instead of having American actors put on fake accents.
I may have a couple of minor complains: namely that I didn't care about Samael nor Alejandro's first love. Not sure planting so early something that they're keeping for S2 is a right move. Feels like a waste of screentime. Also, I'm not particularly found of secret societies trying to rule the world, but it seems to be mandatory to any Zorro story... And the finale episode didn't actually wrap up that many plotlines - every major villain escaped! So that kinda made it look like Zorro didn't accomplish much, apart from breaking Lolita's heart, and his. But none of this prevented me from having a good time watching the show. I just really hope there'll be a S2 cause it'd be a shame to leave things there!
How about you guys? What did you think of it?

Guess it's fitting for today, so a translation of Czech version of Do You Hear the People Sing? When I say our songs are sometimes very different, this is what I mean.
[Stars], [Javert's Suicide]
Hear the song of the crowds
Enjolras: Hear the song of the crowds from the Vale of tears*; we want to live here we've had enough of poverty, woes, and arbitrariness. All we know is that the day will come when we'll say farewell to the darknesses, settle accounts with the monarchs, and freedom will come to us.
Combeferre: Tomorrow, the rulers can't just play with us anymore We'll send them a fiery visiting card from the barricades
Courfeyrac: After all, the one, whom the gods love, dies young.
Students: Hear the song of the crowds from the Vale of tears*; we want to live here we've had enough of poverty, woes, and arbitrariness. All we know is that the day will come when we'll say farewell to the darknesses, settle accounts with the monarchs, and freedom will come to us.
Feuilly: We will stand upright to defend the rights, and we'll put even the heart at risk, our tricolour will fly** and we won't lose the lustre, just, long live freedom, life, and motherland. Vive la France!
Students: Hear the song of the crowds from the Vale of tears*; we want to live here we've had enough of poverty, woes, and arbitrariness. All we know is that the day will come when we'll say farewell to the darknesses, settle accounts with the monarchs, and freedom will come to us.
---
*Vale of tears = the world full of trouble and sorrow (it's from the Bible)
**they make a French flag from three pieces of cloths and then they fly the French flag.
original lyricist: Zdeněk Borovec

NOOOOOOOOOOO
Ya know how clown said the song that fits eddie and frank? It's Esperar Pra ver. Now read the lyrics
On Sunday I read your huge letter telling everything No domingo eu li sua carta imensa contando tudo
The first time I knew what you think, I knew everything A primeira vez que eu soube o que pensa, soube de tudo
And I was like someone who doesn't live in the world E fiquei como quem não vive no mundo
And hence my profound silence E daí esse meu silêncio profundo
I felt that sadness would come and change Eu senti que a tristeza ia chegar e mudar
Would take my heart Ia tomar o meu coração
Today I don't know what I think anymore Hoje não sei mais o que penso
I want what I'm looking for Quero o que procuro
I wanted so much to live my future with you Eu queria tanto viver contigo o meu futuro
But sometimes things like that happen Mas às vezes a coisa assim acontece
Appears, appears, appears Aparece, parece, para aparece
Today there is nothing left but to wait Hoje nada mais resta além de esperar
To see something happen Para ver alguma coisa acontecer
And a new day arrives E chegar um novo dia
And the silence ends and a new day E o silêncio acabar e um novo dia
The song meant, that the singer received an extravagant letter and the letter was from singer's lover and it said that they died, Now where have we heard about that Hmmmm? Oh right! Frank received a neon red letter that said from eddie that he died, Frank was seen protecting the letter but why? to keep it in memory of his husband ofc. Why are my eyes leaking water????
