and as was said in Lumiya's post, we just finished 3rd arc in the Cedric's Screaming Closet's reading club, and so here we goooooooOOOOOOOO for standard summary!
i tell you i thought the "great time" line would be difficult again, but it turned out the greatest problem was to find someone who "knows more" cause EVERYONE is stupid in this arc, ok maybe apart from Jewell and Maqi
BUT the wonderful feature of arc 3 is the general character development and so most of these only work for the beginning
ok Himerish starts to learn only in 4th arc, so he probs remains the same - it felt absurd to put an oracle to "no idea", but he is very close, very close
Sylla has worse time in the end, serves him right mf
Maqi, Ari, Yua and especially the ADs get happy ends after struggle (i rl dont know if Ari learned anything or is just chill, but whatever)
Orube learns a great deal and turns out to be very wise and able to use her wisdom - and i think she also gets happier. I was really tempted to use the panel where she eats the banknotes lol
the guardians.. are for the 1st time in half-plan-zone, cause they really seem to know something is off right from the start, plus Taranee of course, they kinda understand more stuff than Hime tbh - then they are foolish again in the AD arc at times, but then they learn and mature in that case, as well.
This arc is really goddamn awesome. I love all the metaphors, parallels, hidden meanings - i have a bunch of short metas planned only from reading this you know
Council is in knowing more than they're sharing - cause they definitely started to feel more real about kicking their boss out right here - and we know what is about to happen in just the next issue

It intrigues me so much that it’s a conscious decision for the W.i.t.c.h. to interfere in the politics of Meridian. The fact that in the beginning, all they’re told is “Oh, the Veil protects the rest of the universe from the evil that’s trying to leave Meridian and is caused by Phobos, this is why you need to protect the Veil!” is such a good first introduction to Kandrakar’s whole deal, because it is so fucking hypocritical.
The Veil imprisons Phobos in Meridian, but it also makes it impossible for the people of Meridian to go anywhere else. They’re stuck in an impoverished city with a volatile, autocratic king, and they can’t leave. Phobos bleeds Meridian dry without any regard for his people, and Kandrakar lets him do that while making sure their borders are secure. It’s so important that the W.i.t.c.h. are essentially told that everything that comes from Meridian is evil, that the people of Meridian are monsters, and that their priority is to guard those borders.
Then, they see Meridian for the first time while they look for Taranee, and they find normal people. Galgheita saves them and later on tells them the story of Meridian from the perspective of someone who is affected, and it changes their entire perception. From then on, they support the people of Meridian against Phobos when they can, and eventually – obviously also due to Elyon – they decide that guarding the Veil is not enough. To actually solve the problem, they have to tackle its roots, not its symptoms, and the root is Phobos. At the same time, Elyon works through what she’s been told by the one-man propaganda machine that is Cedric, and together, they break the cycle from both sides. This arc fucks and Kandrakar is already in the first arc not entirely in the right.

It's been a while since I've reread the W.I.T.C.H. comics but I remember thinking there was nothing wrong with Maqi. Like Ari was like: "Oh, no, my son, he's ill.", and I was like: "Come on, chill out, he's just in his own world."
Several years forward and now I know I'm neurodivergent and autistic. So Maqi being "cured" at the end feels really wrong. I get he didn't speak, but did Disney literally "cured" an autistic child? Just read this and it hit too close to home.
So yeah, Maqi was never "ill".

The video accompanying this project (turn the subtitles ON ^^)
For what may or may not be the very last episode of my YouTube videos "Redesign", I decided to work on a comic and cartoon that fought then lost a war between 2 italian licences of fairy magical girls (which is injust because it's way more cool) : "W.I.T.C.H" !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note-worthy differences :
-my take on "W.I.T.C.H" will be more… well, witchy… than fairy, so we can avoid any look-alike with "some" other cartoon with fairy magical girls. So they'll have no wings but capes that help them flying
-I wanted to work on wand/magic staves, so I gave the girls (except Will) wands inspired by the manga "Sugar Sugar Rune". Said wands will be hidden under the looks of jewels like in the end of issue #44.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wilhelmina "Will" Vandom
Age : 14 Sign : Capricorn Likes : swimming, skateboard, biology, animals (especially frogs) Hates : being betrayed, bullies, math Role : Guardian of the Heart aka Quintessence, chief of WITCH Amulet : Heart of Kandrakar pendant Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, energy blasts, empathy, creation and control over every kinds of energy, magic detection
If I could rewrite the character, I'd make Will some kind of loner boarder struggling with heavy trust/self-worth issues. She'd stay a newcomer in Heatherfield with her divorced mother. And she would have some rocky start when she fights bullies to protect an injured dormouse. After detention she'd meets Irma Lair and Hay Lin, and find a pretty pendant in her bag once in her flat. The day after, Will goes to the Silver Dragon, sees Irma and Hay Lin and meets Yan Lin. Yan Lin reveal all the lore about the other worlds, the Veil and their role as its Guardians. Even thought Yan Lin remarks that the Heart of Kandrakar already choose her as its weilder (by protecting the dormouse, secret test of character, ya know), Will would refuse her destiny at first and would flee on her skateboard. After a certain period (like, 3 quarters of the chapter/episode), Will would accept her role and to serch the last 2 Guardians. Throught the story, she'd have to accept that she can't do everything by herself and that by trusting others, she can learn to love herself.
Tumblr media
Irma Lair
Age : 13 Sign : Pisces Likes : relaxing, eating, turtles, music, joking Hates : her loved ones being hurt, sports, seriousness, inappropriate jokes Role : Guardian of the Water Amulet : bracelet Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, creation and control of water/ice/mist, underwater breathing, telepathic influence, healing
If I could rewrite the character, I'd like to make Irma a childhood friend of Hay Lin, growing up together and knowing almost everything about eachother. When Yan Lin reveals their role as magical protectors of the Earth, Irma would be the most enthusiastic of the lot despite Will’s reluctance. I’d like to keep her in the role of the clown in the group who manages her insecurities through humour. But I’d like to take it to a higher level. In the sense that my version of Irma would be one to take sometimes reckless risks in the midst of battle without paying attention to her own safety. Her long-term goal throught the story will be to accept that she is just as important as her friends and must be able to protect herself before thinking about protecting others.
Tumblr media
Taranee "Tara" Cook
Age : 13 Sign : Aries Likes : calm, science, music, dance, photography, basketball, hoods Hates : crowds, insects, uncontrolled noises, people touching her stuff, wind on her neck Role : Guardian of the Fire Amulet : hair pearl Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, fire creation and control, heat manipulation
If I could rewrite the story, I'd like to take some time to assemble the group, like I said in Will's rewrite In the episode/chapter 2, our first 3 Guardians would still need to find the other 2 chosen girls among their schoolmates. And I think that Taranee would be the first to be recruited at the end of some convoluted events to brief her about the situation and make her accept magic's reality. In terms of personality, I think I'd like her to be on the spectrum. So she have some analyzing capacities, but also difficulties understanding emotions and irony. She'd be really sensitive to sounds and airflows, hence the headphones in her normal form and the hood in her transformed form. Her low empathy would hinder her to use her powers to the maximum and to make a place for herself in the group. During the series, she would learn to let herself go a little more and to try to develop her empathy. It’s kinda difficult, but she does her best and it’s sincere.
Tumblr media
Cornelia "Corny" Hale
Age : 14 Sign : Taurus Likes : ice skating, studying, being elegant, winning, being right, being a leader Hates : being wrong, losing, water (she can't swim), not being in control of the situation Role : Guardian of the Earth Amulet : ring Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, control of earth and minerals (rock, sand, crystals), creation and control of plants, telekinesis, vibration detection
If I could rewrite the character, I'd like to make her the last to join the group around of the 3rd-4th chapter/episode. And her integration will not be without difficulties given her personality. Indeed, my Cornelia would be a proud upper-middle-class young lady, thank you. She grew up in a privileged environment that led her very early to adopt a haughty princess attitude with everyone. She's indeed an excellent student who participates in the clubs and extracurricular activities necessary for her studies, but it is more to please her entourage than by real interest (except for ice skating). Her need for attention and control doesn't help her to be appreciated when she tries to take the place of chief. By becoming a Guardian, Cornelia would become aware of some of the world's realities, become more honest with herself and learn to let it go, which is why her long hair is detached in her transformed form.
Tumblr media
Hay Lin
Age : 12 Sign : Gemini Likes : arts & crafts (drawing, painting, sculpting, sewing), tinkering, making magical objects, sci-fi, having fun Hates : lying, being compared to her grandmother, gossips Role : Guardian of the Air Amulet : pin's Powers : invisibility, telepathy, levitation without her cape, winds control, cloud gathering, overdeloped hearing, reading an object's past, lies detection, premonitory dreams
If I could rewrite the character, I'd like to make Hay Lin a childhood friend of Irma, growing up together and knowing almost everything about eachother. She'd lived in the knowledge of magic, the Veil and the rest through her grandmother and began at a very young age to tinker with small magical objects. For example, the group's wand-amulets are of her work. She has long blamed herself for not being able to tell Irma the truth and would want to be more honest with her friends. Hay Lin is used to observing the Silver Dragon's clients, which taught her to decipher micro-expressions. Thus, she always knows how the other WITCH feels and always does her best to console them whatever their worries. Secretly, she fears not being up to Yan Lin, who's considered a Guardian of legend by all of Kandrakar. Throughout the story, she'll accept that she is not and does not have to be like her grandmother to protect the world as long as she gives her maximum in what she does.

she was different. and just because she was different, she was treated differently. she grew to spite that; that people decided who she was just because of how she looked. it angered her that people were quick to judge because of something she had no control over. no one is born with hate. hate is learned. she was nice to those who are kind, and to those who were granted less privileges in their existence. but she held contempt to those who abused their power, or displayed cruelty. no, tempest wouldn’t hurt a fly, but she wouldn’t hesitate with a corrupt royal.
she looks different now– more human. she doesn’t like it. she had learned to love being different. she had learned to love her horns and her fangs– every sharp edge. snd she felt confident with what she had. she’ll initially come off bitter. that’s because she is. at least she still has her power.

Apparently, the main villain for season 3 of W.I.T.C.H. was supposed to be a disillusioned priest who suddenly developed mysterious abilities. What is even more interesting is that this priest was supposed to be voiced by Jonathan Frakes, the same dude who voiced David Xanatos from Gargoyles.
If they didn't adapt out Ari and Maqi, imo, I can see the priest acting as a sort of advisor while having his own agenda involving with Yua, who might be the Heart of Arkhanta in the animated continuity.
That said, I wanna see W.I.T.C.H. (plus Orube since she was supposed to make her debut here) duking it out with Father Xanatos.

Day 13: villain
So, I keep escalating on this post more than my usual amount, and I've started over from scratch two times already.
My final decision is to mainly walk through each villain one by one and try to keep it short. I won't, we all know that. It's an excuse for throwing statements out there I don't want to explain.
Have fun!
So, beforehand, I'd just like to briefly state that, in general, I felt the comics were misbalanced in terms of power and the cartoon did a lot better in presenting them consistently and in a way that made the villains seem worthy adversaries. That said, for the rest of this talk, I will focus mainly on the character writing and less on the power levels, just keep in mind that I feel all sorts of fighting - physically and mentally - in general could use a level up.
- Phobos. He's the first major villain, and I already dropped a boatload on what I'd have made of his story, but let's have a look at why I do not actually like him as a villain in W.i.t.c.h. In my opinion, Phobos' main shortcoming is that he doesn't go far enough into any direction. He's too ridiculous to be a hate sink villain or perceived a real threat, but not ridiculous enough to be iconic. He's fabulous enough for it to be fanon, but it's never used. He doesn't do enough mean things for the reader to root for his downfall, but too many mean things for the reader to root for him without a proper backstory. The lack of which is a whole new minus all on its own. I personally would have him and Cedric be in rehab after their villain arc and later join the guardians' support team thingy they never had but totally should have.
- speaking of: Cedric. The pinnacle of show-doesn't-fit-tell. Don't make the omniscient narrator rave about the cruel king of lies when all said king does is simp around. Also, if you want to make a villain more sympathetic and grey, don't make everyone treat him as a villain and just alzheimer his death five minutes after it happened without any sort of consequence.
- Elyon and Vathek. I like side changes, but please try to keep them realistic. I'm not expecting full Zuko, but a bit of nuance, especially for someone as major as Elyon, would do well. Especially especially since both Elyon and Vathek seemed to enjoy being cruel or antagonistic somewhat, and seemed to carry a lot of personal anger that just dissolved. I would have gone for a more level approach, making them less intense on the villains side and less innocently sweet on the protagonists side.
- Nerissa. Somehow just never stuck with me, despite being one of the most accomplished and threatening villains. She started off promising, but then became just evil. So many things, like her connection with Yan and Hay Lin, went all kinds of nowhere. I'd have liked for her to be more of a grey villain who's specifically against Kandrakars system, and might even pair her up with Ari and (or instead of) Yua. I also somehow always felt her character was lacking just that little special something, but I can't put my finger on it.
- Ari. I loved how he was more of an antagonist than a villain, but hated his conclusion, which draws him down. He doesn't have to learn anything or grow as a parent, and only changes sides once he's handed what he wanted, despite it being disrespectful to say the least toward his child. Which is sad, as I feel he could have realistically had the necessary personal growth while staying in character.
- Yua. Is where the arc went overboard with the sudden desire to use more grey villains, as she switches randomly between being an evil man eating creature and a victim of abduction. I'd have been fine either way, but feel they should have decided on one and stuck with that. I did always find her kind of attractive and even sensual, so I feel she definitely could have given of the right vibe (either as being misunderstood as a sinful lure or being one for real) to be memorable.
- the secret agents. One of the more clever antagonists who required quite some change in tactic, but were rendered utterly boring by the solution to their threat. I think they could have been more fun as either a very serious threat weaved in with Takeda and the magical children or more comical villains who could be used for b-plot.
- Ludmoore. The book was the real memorable villain, just let the guy be an idiot scientist who failed at life. As an idiot science student myself, I can say it's so much more realistic than one would like.
- Tecla. I loved the Ragorlang idea, but the delivery was lacking. Somehow, after a strong start, it became yet another "we beat you by the actual magical power of our friendship" story. Which is a pity, because the potential of having to actually fight through apathy, overt compliance or split into two people like Uriah could have had the same theme in a so much stronger way. I'd have used her as a true threat, a woman so obsessed with her own youth and beauty that she becomes a monster more and more, with Karl having to work out of their toxic relationship as she destroys more and more of their friendships for personal gain like the world's deadliest hunbot. I'd also totally make her powers affect Phobos or Cedric so the other can rotate in panic.
- Dark Mother. Such a strong opportunity for a villain who spreads quietly from the very beginning if only she'd been planned out. And if she'd actually been consistent in her power level. Imagine a near apocalypse only the magical people in Heatherfield c 8 an see, in which everything is invaded by an evil plant being, and no one feels save. That said, while Dark Mother would make an excellent peak villain for a halfway change like a power upgrade or even the finale, everything else on that arc was the beginning of the end and should be changed.
- Takeda. Was well enough. Nothing exceptional, but rather well done and consistent in himself. I liked the way he did not get a 180° redemption but rather a more in character conclusion that showed how life can be very complex and dissatisfying. As previously stated, I'd have worked him in with the secret agents if I had used him at all. Also, I feel his research might be either set in motion by Dark Mother or include hints to her existence.
- the white queen. Was lame and unnecessary like the entire fast world. Just let Takeda interact with something we already know for fucks sake.
This is the point where I'll likely start forgetting people.
- Nihila. I liked the zodiac theme and powers, but the entire challenges thing was shit and she felt like a weird throwaway emergency plot because everything was so hasty and vague. I'd rather have given her powers to some harmless, neutral citizen who just happens to write some horoscope for a fun filler issue or two.
- the ladies. Had interesting powers but with every single one she appeared op at first only to be nerfed during the second half of the issue, and none stayed longer than one issue, making them feel ridiculous. I might have given them a full arc or made them servants of Dark Mother, as their powers of tapping into nets of some kind (traffic, electricity, magical power) seemed similar to hers.
- the Runics. Just...either make it self aware how similar they are to the W.i.t.c.h. by adding in equivalents to other characters or give them a connection to the Astral Drops. Any other approach makes them ridiculous. Also, don't have male Will fall in love with female Will, it doesn't even make sense as a joke, honestly.
- Orristurr(?). The shark king from that one issue by the sea. Just delete the whole thing, it felt like a parody of a Barbie movie.
- the evil Santa. From that Christmas special. I actually liked the guy. Christmas specials are allowed to be cheesy and on the nose with their message, and he fits right in. Just use the opportunity for character building or a bit of fluff instead of focusing on people we don't know and will never see again.
And I think that's it for the canon villains. Now, any regular on my posts will know that I would also add in Kandrakar as a villain, and I think that the Dark Mother arc would fit nicely to be the moment the guardians and their team return to Kandrakar despite everything and save the day, after which the Oracle finally agrees to a trial. It could be a nice commentary on how too much power into any one person's hand might lead to them viewing themselves and their opinions as superior and forcing their ideals on everyone. It could serve to discuss what should and should not be dictated and controlled, where using powers is infringement and where not using them is neglect.
Anyway, I've rambled on enough. I hope you enjoyed, and let me know if I forgot anyone, as I did successfully confuse myself multiple times along the way.
