"we've been best friends since we were kids. everything just makes more sense when i'm around her."
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN — samy hughes is known for her tough offense on the soccer field.
but off the field, she's the "best person i've ever known," according to her boyfriend, will smith, a boston college forward.
while in san jose for a development camp, the nhl elite prospects were able to catch up with smith to ask him how he's been doing, including how his new relationship's been treating him.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DYNAMIC GROWING UP.
it's funny because we never hung out by ourselves a lot when we were kids. i was pretty attached to her older brothers [quinn, jack, and luke] and she was attached to my sister [grace smith], so we never really hung out that much until we were older. although, we always got along. when we did hang out we enjoyed talking to one another and poking fun as if we were siblings. we really didn't get closer until i moved up to plymouth for the usntdp.
WHAT CHANGED YOUR RELATIONSHIP FROM FAMILIAL TO ROMANTIC?
at least for me, as i got older, my feelings started changing towards her. i started seeing her as an annoying sister less and less and the more we hung out when i was in michigan, the more attached i grew i guess. we started just..doing stupid stuff together and i just really liked hanging out with her. all the times where i thought the things we did together was just a sibling dynamic, i slowly realized it was a lot more than that.
WHAT DID YOU GUYS DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE?
i took her out to dinner in ann arbor and then we walked around for a bit before sitting on a bench and just talking for hours. it was definitely weird at first, but we eased into one another and it was fun getting to know her on a different level than what i've always known her as.
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU MOST TO HER?
her personality for sure. she's super outgoing, always knows what she wants, very independent, super caring. we're very similar in many aspects, hence why we're best friends. she looks up to her brothers a lot which i admire because i also look up to them. i also enjoy her extensive knowledge of hockey because of her family, so it's easy talking about the game with her. she's just always been someone i go to when i need a shoulder to lean on and it's just so easy with her, you know? i love getting to call her so we can talk about our days together.
OF COURSE, HOCKEY'S IN SAMY'S ROOTS. DO YOU GET HER ON THE ICE WITH YOU EVER?
oh yeah, 100%. whenever we're back at michigan or in boston, we're on the ice. she's the one dragging me outside sometimes so we can play 1v1 or something. she's always had that love for hockey even if she doesn't play competitively anymore. i also love seeing her out there because it's what bonded us when we were kids, so it's nice still getting to go out and do it with her. somehow she still beats me too. she doesn't play for 4 months and then we're back on the ice together she scores 3 goals before i can even get the puck in my possession. the guys chirp at me whenever that happens if they're around.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH HER SOCCER GAMES?
every single one of them are on my computer. it doesn't matter what i'm doing. as soon as the live stream starts, i'm booting it up to watch. the guys love watching her play, so i always get to turn it on the tv and then we scream at the stream for two hours together.
SPEAKING OF THE GUYS, WE HEARD SHE HAS A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR LINEMATES AS WELL.
leno and perreault absolutely adore her which i think is really sweet. i was a little worried when i first introduced all of them back when we moved to mich, but the three of them grew close really quickly. sometimes i think they're more excited to see her than i am and that's saying a lot.
WE HEARD HUGHES IS A GREAT COOK. HAS SHE COOKED ANYTHING FOR YOU?
when we're at the lake house she loves cooking all of us breakfast. she makes a great omelette and french toast, like, the best i've ever had. we all go crazy for her breakfast in the mornings.
DO YOU GUYS EVER TRAIN TOGETHER DURING THE SUMMER LIKE RUNNING OR WORKING OUT?
i'm not a huge runner, but sometimes i will run with her when she goes out, or i'd bike along side her. our training schedules are pretty different, but when we're in the offseason we'd occasionally hit the gym together or do some casual workouts that won't kill us. she knows what the hockey training is like so it's no stranger to her when she does follow my lead. soccer, on the other hand, is a lot more sprints and footwork which is sometimes helpful for me.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME OF SAMY'S BEST QUALITIES?
shes a huge team player. she's always looking out for those girls on her soccer team, helping them run drills, being someone to talk to—i really admire her for that. she's got a real big heart too. her love is so contagious. she's dependable, trustworthy, kind, beautiful—the list could go on coming from me.
ANY LAST WORDS YOU WANT US TO ADD?
i love her, haha. our parents knew way before us that we would end up together before we even knew. we've been best friends since we were kids. everything just makes more sense when i'm around her. this is probably corny, but i wanna spend the rest of my life with her. she's my rock.

April 6, 2024: First Birthday, Brad Leithauser
First Birthday Brad Leithauser
You have your one word, which fills you to brimming. It’s what’s first to be done on waking, Often the last at day-dimming: Lunge out an arm fiercely, As though your heart were breaking, Stab a finger at some stray illumination — Lamp, mirror, distant dinner candle — And make your piercing identification,
“‘ight! ‘ight! ‘ight!” Littlest digit, you’ve got the world by the handle. Things must open for you, you take on height, Your sole sound in time reveal itself As might, too, and flight. And fright. Some will be gone. But you will come right.

Monster Hunter (2020)
Tumblr media
Most probably wouldn’t consider Monster Hunter good for valid reasons. I will acknowledge the movie's flaws while admitting I enjoyed it for what it is. There are some cool monster designs, exciting action scenes and unexpected turns. Today, that’s enough for me and I don’t think I’ll be the only one who says so.
U.S. Army Ranger Captain Natalie Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her United Nations security team are searching for a missing team of soldiers in the desert when they are suddenly transported to another world. On this hostile planet, humans co-exist with savage monsters of all shapes and sizes. Joining forces with a warrior from the New World (Tony Jaa), Artemis heads towards a mysterious tower in the distance. “The Hunter” was headed that way with his troupe of warriors before they became separated. Artemis hopes the tower is linked to the storm that ripped her away from Earth.
The neat thing about this movie is that Artemis and The Hunter don’t speak a common language. I mean, how could they? After realizing they’d rather stand together against the monsters that would eat, squish, incinerate or lay eggs inside them, our heroes team up. Most of the movie is about Artemis and The Hunter slowly learning to trust each other despite not being able to fully understand what the other is saying. Oh, and dodging the various monsters along the way. Actually, I wish the film showed off more monsters than it does, mostly because the big bad at the end is generic. It looks plenty cool, but the design is uninspired, particularly when compared to the Apceros, the Diablos or the Nerscyllas. Those creatures are memorable and unique, so you’re not even sure if they’re hostile or what their abilities might be. When/if our heroes have to fight them, you’ll have a great time learning what their weak points are and what the best strategy is.
I’ve never played any of the games the film is inspired by but if I were to guess, I’d say it captures the feel of them about as well as Paul W.S. Anderson’s other adaptation of a Capcom property: Resident Evil. That’s to say that the plot's nothing like it, but the visuals are there. I say this because we see plenty of weird-looking characters and people with weapons that probably wouldn’t make sense in real life but certainly look cool - The Hunter’s gigantic bow, for instance. It doesn’t make for a deep film, but as something you kick back and watch, it's certainly entertaining.
Where Monster Hunter loses points is during the last third, when we’re introduced to a Monster World inhabitant who speaks English. How he knows it doesn’t make much sense. It feels like a studio-mandated decision to make sure people would understand what’s going on, but come on. We spent over an hour of this movie piecing things together without anyone holding our hand. Why not have confidence in us paying attention all the way through? Monster Hunter also makes bizarre choices right at the end. The film ends. The credits start rolling. Then it starts up again and concludes. The credits roll once more only for a stinger that promises a sequel to pop up once the last name has scrolled past. The “first” conclusion wasn’t definitive. It was elegant in a way that said “This part of the adventure is over, but there are more monsters out there”. Going over that thought two more times is clumsy.
There’s not much dialogue and the plot is straightforward. That’s appropriate for a movie called Monster Hunter. The world is full of monsters. Find a way to survive the encounters and get back home! Sure, it means the title is a giant misnomer but should that promised sequel materialize (it’s not going to) it would’ve made sense. I went into Monster Hunter expecting it to be terrible because, despite a few recent outliers, most video game adaptations have been lackluster at best. I was pleasantly surprised. I'd watch another Monster Hunter. I'd even watch this again before any of the Resident Evil films. (August 6, 2023)

"Prayer is a nonlocative, nongeographic space that one enters at one's own peril, for it houses God during those few moments of one's presence there, and what is there will most surely change everything that comes into it. Prayer, its opal walls polished to transparency by the centuries of hands that have touched them, is the Tabernacle realized and the wayside chapel utilized."

something happened today and i just needed to get it out.
TW: death, mention of suicide and car crash
i live in an isolated place. its small, no more than 20,000 people, and quiet and an everybody-knows-everybody type of community. last night a junior in high school die in a car accident with his mom in the car who did manage to survive.
i didnt know this kid, but i know he played basketball and was on 3 teams, him mom was well-known and apart of a local native tribe. he has a little sister in kindergarten and a brother who's only a freshman.
he passed around 10 o'clock last night on November 14th and everyone found out as early as 6am this morning.
i found out and spent a good chunk of my morning sobbing, but i never knew this kid except in passing and i feel like an intruder. he was my cousins' friend and a close family member to another one of my friends. he was well know and a good guy.
almost half of the high school was dismissed but they didn't let kids go home by driving themselves and didn't want any of them to be home alone resulting in carpooling and kids staying over at each other's house which was a good call i believe.
his mothers tribe is hosting a bonfire for him that'll go on for 24 hours and the high school has, since this morning, hosted an area for their teachers and students to talk and write letters to his family. i want to go and write but i feel like an intruder.
i didnt know him like my cousin did, or the basketball team, or his family. i want to say things to him but i don't know anything but his name.
stories on instagram and facebook and whatever are being shared and posted and for once im glad I've been off of those platforms for a while.
this is terrifying. i dont drive as everything is within walking distance, but my cousin starts driving in a few months and so many kids i know will start soon too. we're support to be a "safe" place. nothing big is supposed to happen here, its supposed to be a paradise and a place that only is active in the summer. im scared to go down where he died and im scared to the store his parents own.
i want to write a letter to him, to his family, but im so scared of what to say. i don't know what to say.
two people dead in 1 year in this isolated community. they were not even 6 months apart. a teacher who killed herself and a student who died in an accident and a friend of one of my friend's mom drank himself to death last night as well.
its scary and i hate this so much.
he was not even 18.
ive heard so much and i cannot stop thinking about him. he seemed like such a good kid with such a good family. im glad the school is doing everything they can to help with the memorials and reaching out to the families. im so grateful for the local tribe for honoring him.
i wish this never happened and o could make everybody feel better bur i cant. i wish i could stop crying but i cant.
rest in peace, W.S. and if there is an afterlife i hope you're with the people you love and are well cared for.

An introduction & what the Pink Moon means to me.
Hello, how’re you all doing today? Please call me ‘W.S’ or just ‘W’ as I don’t wish to give my name out online. I am a… relatively young practitioner; I’d say. You can check my bio for my age and how long I’ve been practicing. But anyways, here’s a little bit more about me; astrology wise.
My Sun sign is Sagittarius, which is also in my second house. My Moon sign is in Scorpio, which is in my twelfth house, and my Ascendent is also in Scorpio, but that’s in my first house.
If anyone is interested in me going into more detail about what I just said, please like and/or reblog this post; or comment/ask me to go over it. Whatever works, really.
I’m not really sure what else to put here, so here’s what the Pink Moon means to me.
Okay, so; the Pink Moon is arriving at 12:37 a.m. EST on April 6. Which is tomorrow morning if you’re also in the US. The first full moon of spring has the chance to heal us, and those around us — but growth comes with its challenges. As the full moon in Libra lights up the sky, we’ll take notice of what we need to do in order to improve our circumstances and relationships.
And it’s actually nicknamed the Pink Moon because of the wild pink flowers that bloom with spring. This specific lunation is often associated with rebirth, renewal and newness. After a long winter, we're getting a glimpse of the beauty the season brings, welcoming the sunshine back into our lives (and our hearts).
And since this is technically Aries season, this full moon in Libra so, with any luck, its energy will help us balance out Aries' bold spirit with Libra's relationship-minded energy during this exciting time of year.
And another thing to note: On April 11, Venus and Pluto will make a trine, and the sun and Jupiter unite in the same sign, Aries. This is the luckiest day of the year!
But before we get there, we have to go through the full moon. The full moon falls within the via combusta, from 15 degrees Libra to 15 degrees Scorpio. It's known as the fiery path, and it adds some intensity to the full moon. You might see people dig their heels into the ground more.
Chiron is a small solar system body, per NASA, that also represents the healer of the zodiac. It's opposing the moon at this time, which can add a healing energy to the mix.
Okay, that’s all I have to say, have a good day.

The last things to share about this story are a couple of my influences, often as small as a few words, as brief as the rhythm of a phrase, as fleeting as a concept, but which I hope created a resonance, a richness.
Chapter 4 “Pedri moved to rest his weight on one elbow, lopsided, freeing his other hand to trail down Gavi’s stomach and pelvis...then trailing lower, trailing faster...” cf. “Then practice losing farther, losing faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel.”  - Elizabeth Bishop, “One Art”
Chapter 6 “Sometimes, when Gavi is alone at night and Pedri’s absence runs through every thought, every breath, every cell...” cf. “Your absence has gone through me Like thread through a needle. Everything I do is stitched with its color.”  - W.S. Merwin, “Separation”
“That is the thing he has admitted to himself since that terrible night, gradually and then all of a sudden, and maybe already too late: it was never messing around for him, it was so much more than that the moment it started...” cf. “We weren’t really dating. It was more than that the moment it commenced.”  - Douglas A. Martin, “Outline of My Lover”
Chapter 8 “The spasm that runs through him feels like it goes on for hours, waves then bursts then sparks of pleasure as he comes with a cry.” cf. “And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain For unremembered lads that not again Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.”  - Edna St. Vincent Millay, “What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why”

April 6, 2023: Toad, Norman MacCaig
Toad Norman MacCaig Stop looking like a purse. How could a purse squeeze under the rickety door and sit, full of satisfaction, in a man's house? You clamber towards me on your four corners - right hand, left foot, left hand, right foot. I love you for being a toad, for crawling like a Japanese wrestler, and for not being frightened. I put you in my purse hand, not shutting it, and set you down outside directly under every star. A jewel in your head? Toad, you've put one in mine, a tiny radiance in a dark place.
