More thoughts on hws Indonesia (headcanon):
-I don’t assign ethnicity to him because there’s nothing to assign him with? The Javanese which is the largest ethnic group here doesn’t even exceed 50% of the population. Therefore he’s not of any ethnicity (Indonesian is, btw, a nationality). But he would act Javanese in a number of situations, esp when it comes to formal politics because the Javanese dominates the political stage by large.
Tumblr media
-Yes Islam is majority religion here, but for me Indonesia is not Muslim exactly — and if he is, the first thing he would do is to denounce the ‘Middle Eastern’ fundamentalist Islam and uphold ‘Islam Nusantara’ or Islam adapted to local beliefs and way of life. But anyway, he practices syncretism of many types of faith to a high degree that at times he’s more pagan than anything.
-I also don’t really assign looks to him in a way like… look, Indonesians are really diverse in looks. You can find every skintone from fair to really dark here (tho because we’re in the equator obviously fair here doesn’t mean fair people in northern hemisphere would think about), every hair texture from super straight to coily, every eye shape from slanted and small to really big, every mouth shape from basically nothing to full. And these could be present across ethnicities even though ethnic groups typically have certain stereotypes. To my knowledge, people living in different islands typically also have pretty distinct looks, kinda, from each other… I myself am only familiar with 3 islands out of like 17.000 so my idea of common Indonesian look could massively differ from other Indonesians’ and it would be laden with bias to the point there might not actually be such a concept as a ‘common Indonesian look’.
However, I myself base Indonesia mostly off of this dude from the movie ‘Oeroeg’ because I like it a lot and I think it conveys well what kind of a person Indonesia is in my mind:
Tumblr media
-What kind of person HWS Indonesia is in my mind?
When I think of HWS Indonesia, I think of a dude who is: extroverted and ready to mingle with everyone, with a significant amount of charisma and a hint of badboy. He is capable of utmost generosity and the highest level of cruelty at the same time. He is born of chaos and for chaos; it actually takes a lot out of him to just not cave in and let everything descend into disorder, and by that, he thrives off it so much to contain him is almost to make him ill. Always needs to move and you cannot predict where he wants to go; he will always slip off your fingers, and the moment you think you have a keen grasp of him is the exact moment he will leap off. Highly lucky; he believes God’s favor is always on his side and he is actually right. Highly resilient to the point of unkillable, but he’s not like this due to physical strength exactly and more of being a slippery snake even from fate. Of nothing, but at the same time, of everything — everything the wild ocean waves are made of, everything the hurricane is weaved from. A succumber of fate, but at the same time, its master.

Gundala (2019)
We need to put more veteran horror directors in charge of superhero properties.
Tumblr media
Here's what I knew about this film going into it. One: It is a film by Joko Anwar, and I've seen his earlier film Kala. Two: It is a superhero movie, an attempt to create a superhero cinematic universe by "the guy who made Kala". Now that film really deserves a post of its own but is absolutely a horror film. There's a bit where an entire bus full of Goons is just turned into blood, it's wild.
Gundala is, first off, 123 minutes long. It does NOT feel like it. This is a film that is GOING. There are NO BRAKES on this story.
It's also a film that, as gradually becomes more clear as it goes on, actually takes place in a Wuxia universe. At first there's much more normal superhero origin stuff, but the stick-wielding thugs our hero Sancaka is often facing are pretty darn skilled in martial arts. The next tier of villain up from that is, well, let's let wikipedia demonstrate:
Tumblr media
That's right. We've got the Orphan Assassin Pipeline fully established here. They've got codenames based on their occupations and matching gimmicks. They've got Cecep Arif Rahman! And you know if you put Cecep in a movie I think he's contractually required to punch the shit out of people for like 10 minutes with some fancy martial arts moves. Which he does, of course. Also, 'The Hypnotist'? Actually just a naruto-style genjutsu master. Straight up wizard shit, including the ability to know exactly what hallucinations he's inflicting on people.
All of these people have 'costumes' but not 'superhero costumes', if you get my meaning. Wizard excepted, none of them seem to have superpowers either but they are definitely some weirdoes. Meanwhile Sunchaka's powers are extremely magical. There's a very mythic vibe to it, he draws powers from thunderstorms that seem to follow him and knock on his door which is never explained. And hey, it's indonesia, thunderstorms are not in short supply!
The film also structures it so you get the obviously weird stuff where it seems lightning can knock on doors, then the wizard, then lots of more mundane martial arts. But you know there's a wizard! You also saw the child Sancaka shoot lightning once! So the escalation to 'orphan assassins' is pretty normal, and the introduction of a Sealed Ancient Javanese Evil is...okay, less normal, but far from the most insane thing in this movie.
Anyways. This movie kicks ass. It has really good fight choreography and the superhero property jokes are funny. I love the dynamic where Sancaka tells his coworker about how he beat up 30 guys armed with clubs and his coworker just refuses to believe him until a crowd of people show up to yell at him to do it again. There's a corrupt politician who gets dragged along to the Ancient Evil stuff and he is clearly uncomfortable, the man only signed up to do mob things not Unseal The Evil. There's some really fun shots too, it's a good time. Looking forward to other parts of this franchise because they can just randomly put high-grade martial arts films in it.
Spoilers below for the most insane part of this very wild movie. Yes, more insane than the wizard. Or the orphan assassins or the...you get the idea.
The most insane part of this movie is the main villain's plot, which revolves around mass-poisoning pregnant women with a serum that causes babies to grow up without morality. A thing several characters in the film hear and go 'what does that even mean, how does a drug understand morality, is being gay immoral to the drug' but no, that's his plan. There's an elaborate fakeout across most of the movie; the villain poisons some rice with the serum, so the government devises an antidote, and there's long arguments over if it's right to rush the antitode but the fate of the nation's children are at stake, the villain begs them not to rush the antidote, it gets approved, it's mandated for all pregnant women to get it, and then it turns out the antidote is made by a company owned by the villain and... and... the 'antidote' is the REAL morality-removing serum. Which, is a real thing in the world of this film. Near the end of the film a politician just walks in from out of frame and shoots this bad guy with a revolver. Wild ride. Absolutely would have destroyed trust in government. Good LORD it is lucky this film came out before COVID happened.
Also, this film was arguably memed into existence by a single very dedicated man. Wild.

Rejoice! Seapunkification Ancestors WIP be upon ye >:)
Left to right, top row to bottom row:
Cronus Vantas (the Signless), Aranea Nitram (the Summoner), Porrim Captor (the Fateseer)
Meulin Pyrope (the Neophyte Orphaner), Kurloz Zahhak (the Salvation), Kankri Ampora (the Acolythe), Damara Peixes (the Timeless)
this is also the first time I posted a drawing of trolls with face plates and pincers, like my headcanons intended <3
My Bloodswap AU tag
.
Design notes (and more!) under the cut!
WELL!!!
I've been dying to draw the Seapunkification ancestors for ages. My partner told me they want to see it, so I thought, "I should do it!!!" So I did, chipping away at it in between my assignments :D
I don't want to deal with thin lines with my disability causing pain and tremors. It's so difficult. So I kept putting it off... now that I don't have to draw with a mouse anymore, this is way faster and easier. Hell yeah lineless art, hell yeah pens! <3
So, this drawing is actually 1 of 2 versions. Why? Because some of these people change over the course of history.
For example, Cronus is drawn in its Signless era right now, instead of the Troubadour era where he was a classic-pop singer and sex symbol. The Troubadour!Signless will be drawn in version 2!
Same with Kankri. We'll see them as the Beguiler/Deceiver/Orphaner eventually, Aranea as the Corsaire, and more.
Now for the actual design notes... Signless!Cronus' design always eludes me.
I used to make him still wear the "50s swinger" clothes to give them a connection to their Troubadour persona/era, but maybe this is further down the line when Cronus is fully into the messiah/chosen one persona.
As for Aranea, I've always seen her as wearing a lederhosen. You can put the sign on the chest, too. The cowboy look is to protect from the sun; after all, she was enslaved by the Orphaner Corps, who doesn't really care if she was exposed to the scorching sunlight. She also couldn't afford glasses at this point.
Porrim Captor's design is straightforward. She was an oracle for the Empress - her favorite, even! - before she escaped and was sold to a cerulean. So she was given a lot of fancy clothes. It gave her a taste for fashion, though as a lowblood, she knew this was probably temporary, and so she learned how to make and modify them. After running away, I figured she'd make her own clothes. The "boob window" is a shoutout to Porrim Maryam's clothes.
Nepeta Pyrope's Orphaner garb is based on IRL military uniforms. They were the first and only Teal who is actually an Orphaner (unlike other tealbloods who work in the Orphaner Corps as administrative or legal staff), so maybe I'll change the color to a more neutral gray, with teal additions.
Kurloz Zahhak spread a message of peace in his church. So I made him dress like the Pope, though somewhat more humble. His title comes from the fact that he protected Limebloods in his church while the Empire hunted them down.
Kankri Ampora, as a rebel, shows their blood mutation, which include their bright red gills, real, nubby horns, and lack of pincers. While they did give up their violetblood privileges when they joined the Signless' revolution, they still have the fancy clothes. This one specifically is based on Central Javanese wedding garb. I actually have been trying to incorporate my own local culture into him and Karkat!
Last but not least, Her Passionate Timelessness aka Damara Peixes... her design is also pretty straightforward. Ocean-related patterns are really difficult to make, though, so after countless trial and error, it's mostly coral reefs. The gold dust is also something I really love. She also has bioluminescent freckles, like Aradia in the anniversary art.

Ooh, that's actually pretty close! He is a tabby, but his general build is based off of the Javanese cat. Here's a quick sketch I just did of him!

Long boi
Quick question to those of you who've read my fic:
How have you guys seen Pangur in your mind? I know I barely describe his appearance outside of the color of his fur, but I'm curious to know if it differs from mine.

A Market Stall in Batavia, Andries Beeckman (attributed to), Albert Eckhout (rejected attribution), c. 1640 - c. 1666
The Dutch and Malay inscriptions on the piece of paper in the lower right corner identify this as a Dutch painting of subjects studied on the spot. Most of the fruit varieties are found only in Indonesia, the former Dutch East Indies, and were not exported to Europe at the time. The combination of figures from different countries suggests that the setting is most probably the very cosmopolitan Batavia, modern-day Jakarta.8 A Chinese merchant, recognizable as such from his distinctive goatee, moustache and remarkably long fingernails, is counting coins in a fruit stall set off with bamboo partitions. Standing on the left is a woman wearing a typically Javanese sarong and kebaya and holding a small cigar in one hand while placing a durian upright with the other. A second Javanese woman in the middle is lifting a small bundle of leaf wrappers out of a small Japanese lacquered casket, probably betel leaves. A boy behind her is picking a banana from the bunch hanging on the right. A striking salmon-crested cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) is perched on the bamboo screen at the back.
Andries Beeckman went to great lengths to depict the huge diversity of tropical fruit as faithfully as possible, but he was clearly not a professional still-life painter. The different varieties are easily distinguished, but their textures are not convincing. Laid out on the table – some with numbers matching the list on the piece of paper (the latter are given between brackets below) – are, on the far left, from top to bottom, rambutans (Nephelium lappaceum, no. 1), langsats (Lansium domesticum, no. 3) and starfruit (Averrhoa carambola, no. 2). Beside them are a partly cut pomelo (Citrus maxima, no. 4) and durians, one of them sliced (Durio, no. 5). The three small pieces of red fruit at bottom left are water or Malay apples (Syzygium aqueum or Syzygium malaccense, no. 6) or Java apples (Syzygium samarangense), and lying to their right are mangoes (Mangifera indica, no. 7) and pineapples (Ananas comosus, no. 8). Below the two pineapples in the centre are jackfruit, one halved (Artocarpus Heteropyllus, no. 9) and several small mangosteens, some opened (Garcinia mangostana, no. 10). On the right are bananas (no. 11), five coconuts and a halved one (Cocos nucifera), and at the very front cashew apples (Anacardium occidentale). The fruit cut in two in the Japanese casket is probably a sort of lime called a Calamondin orange (Citrofortunella microcarpa).
The Rijksmuseum painting is a reduced version of a canvas from an anonymous series of scenes of foreign peoples and produce that decorated the walls of Schloss Pretzsch an der Elbe in Saxony until 1828 (fig. a).9 In the nineteenth century they were removed, first to Berlin and then to Schloss Schwedt an der Oder in Brandenburg.10 They were seen there in the 1930s by Thomsen, who rather hesitantly attributed them to Albert Eckhout and dated them around the middle of the seventeenth century.11 Schwedt was completely destroyed in the closing days of the Second World War, and all that is left of the works of art are pre-war black-and-white photographs making it clear that the attribution to Eckhout is untenable.12
The connection with the canvas from Schloss Pretzsch also led to this Market Stall in Batavia being wrongly attributed to Eckhout or his circle in the past.13 It is woodenly executed, compositionally clumsy, and is not of the kind of Brazilian subject for which Eckhout is known. Minor differences between the two paintings show that they were not copied after each other but seem to share the same or a similar source. The way in which the fruit and cockatoo are depicted displays a clear resemblance to the only known still life by Andries Beeckman (fig. b), and, interestingly, one of the scenes from the series in Pretzsch castle was definitely based on watercolours by him,14 so the present canvas could also be by Beeckman or someone from his circle.
Very little is known about the picture’s provenance, although there are a few early records of an Indonesian fruit market, and since A Market Stall in Batavia is the only surviving work of that nature there is a great temptation to associate it with those early sources. There is, however, nothing that can be said for certain. Around 1660 Jan Vos wrote an ode about paintings in the collection of Joan Huydecooper, among them an ‘East Indies fruit market’: ‘Who has driven me from the north to the east? / I find myself in the market of the East Indies coast. / Here nature displays her fruit as food for life. / The sight makes my mouth desire the beautiful harvest, / Thus is my stomach now sorely overburdened. / Greedy eyes are not soon satiated’.15 It may well be that the poet was referring to the Rijksmuseum canvas.16 There is a second mention of an ‘East Indies fruit market’ a little later in the collection of burgomaster Mattheus van den Broucke of Dordrecht.17 It is far from obvious that it refers to this Market Stall in Batavia. His picture was one of a series of which the others were described as ‘One ditto, with East Indies animals and fruit’, ‘One ditto, being East Indies lodgings, ‘One ditto’, ‘Three ditto, East Indies women’ and ‘A Moorish woman’.18 It is very possible that the Rijksmuseum painting was also part of a larger ensemble of that kind.

RWBY characters races for AUs set in our world.
How I’m going to do this: three things. The first, the city they live in Remnant. This is the least important because that leaves us with only five…maybe six places compared to our world’s hundreds of countries.
The second will be the original of their names, which they’ll have to keep in the AUs, meaning that they need some culture background for them.
The third will be their fairy tale origins.
So to start, Ruby Rose:
She lives in Vale, which is similar to France (I’ll explain why in another post maybe), but technically grew up in patch, a small island off the coast of Vale. I have no idea about Patch’s culture as we hardly ever see it, so I’m going to skip this one. We also don’t know if either Summer or Taiyang was originally from Vale.
We know Taiyang is Chinese from his name, so I’m going to say she’s half Chinese. I also wrote a western au once and really love the idea of Taiyang being an Asian Redneck…so I think I’m going to say Ruby is very, very southern just because that would be adorable.
But if you don’t want that idea I generally see Taiyang being either Asian-American or Asian-French, or Asian-British if your doing a HP AU. Summer is harder to pin down, but Red Riding Hood was originally an Italian fable, so I’m going to have her be Italian or Italian-American.
Weiss:
Weiss is German, although making her simply white America/British would work. I could see her being Russian too in some AU because Atlas fits well as Russia. For American works, Pennsylvania has quite the German population and coal mines, so that works pretty well for her.
Blake is really complicated. From Remment Australia which is culturally SEA (south East Asian), has an English name but parents with a Hindu-inspired names, but neither looking vaguely Indian. I’m going to assume her family are immigrants (as they are in cannon I think) to Australia, maybe even changed their name to help them fit in. Immigrants from where? Well, India is an option, but I like to think Malaysia. They have a large Indian and Chinese population, and I like to think Blake is a mixture of Chinese, Malay, and Indian ethnicities, from Malaysia and immigrated to Australia. And if you think this is crazy or unrealistic, you haven’t seen anything yet. The sheer mix of cultures I’ve seen growing up as an ex-pat is insane. This isn’t too crazy.
For Yang, we already have Taiyang as an Asian red-neck. Or at least I do. Raven and Qrow are going to be a little harder to pin down, but I’m think bandits getting replaced by mafia. Which mafia? I don’t know, take you’re pick. Branwen is Welsh, but I can’t think of a Welsh mafia. Coming from Mistral I would see them as being Triad, not Yakuza because Raven’s gang is famous for being less than coordinated.
If you need a logical reason for Yang having blonde hair, Taiyang could be only half Chinese, half blonde (blonde is race right?).
Either way I see Raven operating in an American city like New York or Detroit.
This would mean Yang is fully Chinese ethnically.
JNPR:
Jaune’s name and inspiration are all French. However his mother does come from Mistral (I think), so I do see him being half Chinese, but nationally French. It’s also funny to imagine him with a French accent.
Pyrrha: she’s Greek or maybe Greek-American with her parents being recent immigrants. Argus seems to Remnent-Greece and her name and fairy tale are greek.
Nora: she should be Scandinavian. I feel like in a MCU AU she’s Thor’s daughter. But she also grew up as a street rat in Mistral, which is hard to fit in our world. Therefore I’m going to have her in America, the great melting pot (and also America seems to be more like Mistral than any other Remnent king with our state system), and she going to ethically Scandinavian but knowing nothing of her culture due to her upbringing.
Ren: obviously Chinese, but I might have him be American-Chinese to fit his story nicely in with Nora’s.
Others:
Coco: we’re all ignoring that she’s based off Coco Channel, so let’s make her a LA girl
Velvet: Australia, because of the accent. Or maybe English because that is her story origin
Fox: he’s difficult, because tribes are pretty rare in modern AUs. But his story could work for various things. He’s one of the few black characters so he could come from practically any African tribe (I’m currently going with Hausa because it’s one of the few I know anything about). His name is based off ‘the fox and the hound’ which is a rare American story, so he could also be from a Native American tribe if you want the AU to be more American-based.
Yatsuhashi: Japanese, this one is thankfully easy.
Sun: Chinese. He comes from a tribe as well, but I can’t think of any nomadic Chinese tribes except the Uyghurs. Making Sun a Uyghur doesn’t make much sense but it will serve to piss off certain people on the internet. And now this is going to be taken down, isn’t it? Oh wait, this is tumbrl. This is anarchy. It won’t. Forgot why I liked this place for a second.
Scarlet: sorry for the rambling there. Anyway, Scarlet is definitely English. “I hope I don’t get sand in my shoes.”
Sage: well, he’s black, but other then that we have nothing to go one. He’s also from Mistral but that doesn’t really work? If Mistral is America as well as China I guess we can make him African American. Or whatever else works best for the AU. He might be Indian too now that I think of it. Or even Maori. Really options are limitless here.
Neptune: Yeah, so probably just American, but does have both a French last name and an Italian first name. So probably ethically American (aka white mutt). Also he lives near a port, I think I’m gonna gone with him being from Tacoma Washington because I am.
Flynt: African American
Neon: Japanese-American because of her meme (it started as part of Japanese pop song on YouTube, the latter of which is America summed up in one invention)
Oscar: Hispanic-American, he just looks it. And I’m guessing he lives in Kansas for obvious reasons. His last name isn’t Hispanic but their could be a lot of reasons for that. Or he could be Native American (Pawnee, Cheyenne, and Osage are all Native American tribes in Kansas).
Penny: well if she’s still a robot she probably stays white, but if you want her human in this AU she might end up being half black as Pietro is, although she also could just be adopted. I guess the later makes more sense, huh? I figure she’s American, with her dad working with a ‘well meaning’ but ultimately corrupt government. Probably living in DC, as that has both the government and the poverty issues.
Emerald: oohh, boy. This is hard. Sustrai is Basque, and Aladdin is a French addition to an Arabian story, she herself is dark skinned with anime features that are super unhelpful for this sorta thing.
I have three ideas. Brazilian, mostly as there’s no South American themed RWBY characters I can think of, and it’s diverse enough that someone looking like Emerald would fit. Secondly, for American centered stories she’s just an orphan with no idea of her ethnicity. Or she could be African, Indian, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic or some mixture between those four. It’s honestly really hard to tell. In my fanfic she’s from Suriname and ethnically 1/4 Indian, 1/2 Creole, and 1/4 Javanese.
Ilia: Sioux (Native American). Ilia means a lot of things in a lot of different languages, and Amitola mean rainbow in Sioux, so I decided to just stick with that.
Mercury: American, white mutt American. I’m guessing New York or Philli for where he grew up, it seems like a place where he’d be comfortable
Neo: the new novel reveals her father lived in vale (btw I haven’t read it, I’m just getting this off the internet) and her mother was a assassin who’s origins aren’t known. She doesn’t really have a fairy tale. So I’m going to go with British or French (thank RWBY thoughts for the first one) although in an American AU she works as just a white American.
Robyn: depends on what Atlas is in this AU, but probably German or American.
Qrow: I already mentioned he’s probably Chinese due to being from Mistral. It’s a bit weird to think of him as Asian, but not as weird as it to think of Raven as white, so I’ll take it. Although I do like the idea of him being American Irish, that’s fun.
Winter: whatever Atlas is in this AU, German or American, although British and Russian would work well too.
Maria: Mexican
Salem: If you want a AU where she’s just a normal person then New England or Italian for her story origin
Watts: British
Tyrian: uh…I have no idea, but he looks white. And he kinda has a British accent? I want him to be southern for the accent tho. Probably just another crazy American
Cinder: her fairy tale is French but her origin is Chinese. Also, Cinderella doesn’t really have an origin, it’s an ancient story with every culture having at least one Cinderella story. So I’m going to say Chinese.
Hazel: American, from the Midwest. He’s darkish so maybe he’s a POC? Part Native American or Hispanic? Idk or really care I can’t stand Hazel
Roman Torchwick: American-Italian, he runs/works for the mafia
Ozpin: American because of the whole wizard-of-Oz-thing or French, because he seems to have come from Vale.
Glynda: American or French for the same reasons Ozpin is
Oobleck: Jewish American (because Dr. Seuss was)
Professor Port: Russian, due to his fairy tale, or English, due to his style
Taiyang: already said he’s a red-neck Asian.
Raven: depending on whether you want her to be white or not, either Chinese or Irish American, like I already said.
Cordovin: Karen
Ironwood: again, depends on Atlas in the AU. Either American or German…maybe Russian
Clover: Irish-American (or German, obviously the ace-ops depend on where Atlas is. I’m just going to do the rest of them assuming Atlas is American because Germany isn’t that diverse)
Harriet: African-American, I guess. It kinda messes with the story because Harriet is supposed to be privileged, which doesn’t really work in this AU, but she’s also obviously black.
Elm: Just normal American, maybe greek-American because of the Aesop fable themes
Vine: Tibetan based on his design
Marrow: either African-American or Pakistani/Indian-American. (I’m personally going for Pakistani)
Klein: english. All butlers are English. It’s a rule.
Pietro: African-American
Johanna: Pakistani or Indian American
Fiona: Jewish-American (kinda random but while she’s obviously white she also needs to be a minority for the Faunus thing to work)
May: normal upper glass American/German
Ghira: Half Malay, Half Indian, from Malaysia but immigrated to Australia later in life
Kali: half Chinese, half Indian, but also from Malaysia
Adam: much like Fiona I’m going to assume he’s Jewish due to him being white but still needing to be a minority. German or American, again, depending on where Atlas is. Or he could be Chinese, even though it doesn’t work with his name, due to the theory that he was trafficked much like Cinder. I’m going with ethically Jewish though
Sienna Khan: Indian
Huh, I actually finished that. I’m pretty sure I was accidentally racist multiple times and apologize in advance,
I’m exhausted and starving and not thinking straight. But anyway, here it is. Your very messy guide to modern RWBY AUs. I swear this was insane to sort out.

Quote
If every language is acquirable, its acquisition requires a real portion of a person’s life: each new conquest is measured against shortening days. What limits one’s access to other languages is not their imperviousness but one’s own mortality. Hence a certain privacy to all languages. French and American imperialists governed, exploited, and killed Vietnamese over many years. But whatever else they made off with, the Vietnamese language stayed put. Accordingly, only too often, a rage at Vietnamese ‘inscrutability,’ and that obscure despair which engenders the venomous argots of dying colonialisms: ‘gooks,’ ‘ratons’, etc.12 (In the longer run, the only responses to the vast privacy of the language of the oppressed are retreat or further massacre.) Such epithets are, in their inner form, characteristically racist, and decipherment of this form will serve to show why Nairn is basically mistaken in arguing that racism and anti-semitism derive from nationalism – and thus that ‘seen in sufficient historical depth, fascism tells us more about nationalism than any other episode.’13 A word like ‘slant,’ for example, abbreviated from ‘slant-eyed’, does not simply express an ordinary political enmity. It erases nation-ness by reducing the adversary to his biological physiognomy.14 It denies, by substituting for, ‘Vietnamese;’ just as raton denies, by substituting for, ‘Algerian’. At the same time, it stirs ‘Vietnamese’ into a nameless sludge along with ‘Korean,’ ‘Chinese,’ ‘Filipino,’ and so on. The character of this vocabulary may become still more evident if it is contrasted with other Vietnam-War-period words like ‘Charlie’ and ‘V.C.’, or from an earlier era, ‘Boches,’ ‘Huns,’ ‘Japs’ and ‘Frogs,’ all of which apply only to one specific nationality, and thus concede, in hatred, the adversary’s membership in a league of nations.15 The fact of the matter is that nationalism thinks in terms of historical destinies, while racism dreams of eternal contaminations, transmitted from the origins of time through an endless sequence of loathsome copulations: outside history. Niggers are, thanks to the invisible tar-brush, forever niggers; Jews, the seed of Abraham, forever Jews, no matter what passports they carry or what languages they speak and read. (Thus for the Nazi, the Jewish German was always an impostor.)16 The dreams of racism actually have their origin in ideologies of class, rather than in those of nation: above all in claims to divinity among rulers and to ‘blue’ or ‘white’ blood and ‘breeding’ among aristocracies.17 No surprise then that the putative sire of modern racism should be, not some petty-bourgeois nationalist, but Joseph Arthur, Comte de Gobineau.18 Nor that, on the whole, racism and anti-semitism manifest themselves, not across national boundaries, but within them. In other words, they justify not so much foreign wars as domestic repression and domination.19 Where racism developed outside Europe in the nineteenth century, it was always associated with European domination, for two converging reasons. First and most important was the rise of official nationalism and colonial ‘Russification’. As has been repeatedly emphasized official nationalism was typically a response on the part of threatened dynastic and aristocratic groups – upper classes – to popular vernacular nationalism. Colonial racism was a major element in that conception of ‘Empire’ which attempted to weld dynastic legitimacy and national community. It did so by generalizing a principle of innate, inherited superiority on which its own domestic position was (however shakily) based to the vastness of the overseas possessions, covertly (or not so covertly) conveying the idea that if, say, English lords were naturally superior to other Englishmen, no matter: these other Englishmen were no less superior to the subjected natives. Indeed one is tempted to argue that the existence of late colonial empires even served to shore up domestic aristocratic bastions, since they appeared to confirm on a global, modern stage antique conceptions of power and privilege. It could do so with some effect because – and here is our second reason – the colonial empire, with its rapidly expanding bureaucratic apparatus and its ‘Russifying’ policies, permitted sizeable numbers of bourgeois and petty bourgeois to play aristocrat off centre court: i.e. anywhere in the empire except at home. In each colony one found this grimly amusing tableau vivant: the bourgeois gentilhomme speaking poetry against a backcloth of spacious mansions and gardens filled with mimosa and bougainvillea, and a large supporting cast of houseboys, grooms, gardeners, cooks, amahs, maids, washerwomen, and, above all, horses.20 Even those who did not manage to live in this style, such as young bachelors, nonetheless had the grandly equivocal status of a French nobleman on the eve of a jacquerie:21 In Moulmein, in lower Burma [this obscure town needs explaining to readers in the metropole], I was hated by large numbers of people – the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me. I was sub-divisional police officer of the town. This ‘tropical Gothic’ was made possible by the overwhelming power that high capitalism had given the metropole – a power so great that it could be kept, so to speak, in the wings. Nothing better illustrates capitalism in feudal-aristocratic drag than colonial militaries, which were notoriously distinct from those of the metropoles, often even in formal institutional terms. 22 Thus in Europe one had the ‘First Army,’ recruited by conscription on a mass, citizen, metropolitan base; ideologically conceived as the defender of the heimat; dressed in practical, utilitarian khaki; armed with the latest affordable weapons; in peacetime isolated in barracks, in war stationed in trenches or behind heavy field-guns. Outside Europe one had the ‘Second Army,’ recruited (below the officer level) from local religious or ethnic minorities on a mercenary basis; ideologically conceived as an internal police force; dressed to kill in bed-or ballroom; armed with swords and obsolete industrial weapons; in peace on display, in war on horseback. If the Prussian General Staff, Europe’s military teacher, stressed the anonymous solidarity of a professionalized corps, ballistics, railroads, engineering, strategic planning, and the like, the colonial army stressed glory, epaulettes, personal heroism, polo, and an archaizing courtliness among its officers. (It could afford to do so because the First Army and the Navy were there in the background.) This mentality survived a long time. In Tonkin, in 1951, Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, ‘who liked officers who combined guts with “style,” took an immediate liking to the dashing cavalryman [Colonel de Castries] with his bright-red Spahi cap and scarf, his magnificent riding-crop, and his combination of easy-going manners and ducal mien, which made him as irresistible to women in Indochina in the 1950s as he had been to Parisiennes of the 1930s.’24 Another instructive indication of the aristocratic or pseudo-aristocratic derivation of colonial racism was the typical ‘solidarity among whites,’ which linked colonial rulers from different national metropoles, whatever their internal rivalries and conflicts. This solidarity, in its curious trans-state character, reminds one instantly of the class solidarity of Europe’s nineteenth-century aristocracies, mediated through each other’s hunting-lodges, spas, and ballrooms; and of that brotherhood of ‘officers and gentlemen,’ which in the Geneva convention guaranteeing privileged treatment to captured enemy officers, as opposed to partisans or civilians, has an agreeably twentieth-century expression. The argument adumbrated thus far can also be pursued from the side of colonial populations. For, the pronouncements of certain colonial ideologues aside, it is remarkable how little that dubious entity known as ‘reverse racism’ manifested itself in the anticolonial movements. In this matter it is easy to be deceived by language. There is, for example, a sense in which the Javanese word londo (derived from Hollander or Nederlander) meant not only ‘Dutch’ but ‘whites.’ But the derivation itself shows that, for Javanese peasants, who scarcely ever encountered any ‘whites’ but Dutch, the two meanings effectively overlapped. Similarly, in French colonial territories, ‘les blancs’ meant rulers whose Frenchness was indistinguishable from their whiteness. In neither case, so far as I know, did londo or blanc either lose caste or breed derogatory secondary distinctions.25 On the contrary, the spirit of anticolonial nationalism is that of the heart-rending Constitution of Makario Sakay’s short-lived Republic of Katagalugan (1902), which said, among other things:26 No Tagalog, born in this Tagalog archipelago, shall exalt any person above the rest because of his race or the colour of his skin; fair, dark, rich, poor, educated and ignorant – all are completely equal, and should be in one loób [inward spirit]. There may be differences in education, wealth, or appearance, but never in essential nature (pagkatao) and ability to serve a cause. One can find without difficulty analogies on the other side of the globe. Spanish-speaking mestizo Mexicans trace their ancestries, not to Castilian conquistadors, but to half-obliterated Aztecs, Mayans, Toltecs and Zapotecs. Uruguayan revolutionary patriots, creoles themselves, took up the name of Tupac Amarú, the last great indigenous rebel against creole oppression, who died under unspeakable tortures in 1781. It may appear paradoxical that the objects of all these attachments are ‘imagined’ – anonymous, faceless fellow-Tagalogs, exterminated tribes, Mother Russia, or the tanah air. But amor patriae does not differ in this respect from the other affections, in which there is always an element of fond imagining. (This is why looking at the photo-albums of strangers’ weddings is like studying the archaeologist’s groundplan of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.) What the eye is to the lover – that particular, ordinary eye he or she is born with – language – whatever language history has made his or her mother-tongue – is to the patriot. Through that language, encountered at mother’s knee and parted with only at the grave, pasts are restored, fellowships are imagined, and futures dreamed. 12. The logic here is: 1. I will be dead before I have penetrated them. 2. My power is such that they have had to learn my language. 3. But this means that my privacy has been penetrated. Terming them ‘gooks’ is small revenge. 13. The Break-up of Britain, pp. 337 and 347. 14. Notice that there is no obvious, selfconscious antonym to ‘slant.’ ‘Round’? ‘Straight’? ‘Oval’? 15. Not only, in fact, in an earlier era. Nonetheless, there is a whiff of the antique-shop about these words of Debray: ‘I can conceive of no hope for Europe save under the hegemony of a revolutionary France, firmly grasping the banner of independence. Sometimes I wonder if the whole “anti-Boche” mythology and our secular antagonism to Germany may not be one day indispensable for saving the revolution, or even our national-democratic inheritance.’ ‘Marxism and the National Question,’ p. 41. 16. The significance of the emergence of Zionism and the birth of Israel is that the former marks the reimagining of an ancient religious community as a nation, down there among the other nations – while the latter charts an alchemic change from wandering devotee to local patriot. 17. ‘From the side of the landed aristocracy came conceptions of inherent superiority in the ruling class, and a sensitivity to status, prominent traits well into the twentieth century. Fed by new sources, these conceptions could later be vulgarized [sic] and made appealing to the German population as a whole in doctrines of racial superiority.’ Barrington Moore, Jr., Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy, p. 436. 18. Gobineau’s dates are perfect. He was born in 1816, two years after the restoration of the Bourbons to the French throne. His diplomatic career, 1848–1877, blossomed under Louis Napoléon’s Second Empire and the reactionary monarchist regime of Marie Edmé Patrice Maurice, Comte de MacMahon, former imperialist proconsul in Algiers. His Essai sur l’Inégalité des Races Humaines appeared in 1854 – should one say in response to the popular vernacular-nationalist insurrections of 1848? 19. South African racism has not, in the age of Vorster and Botha, stood in the way of amicable relations (however discreetly handled) with prominent black politicians in certain independent African states. If Jews suffer discrimination in the Soviet Union, that did not prevent respectful working relations between Brezhnev and Kissinger. 20. For a stunning collection of photographs of such tableaux vivants in the Netherlands Indies (and an elegantly ironical text), see ‘E. Breton de Nijs,’ Tempo Doeloe. 21. George Orwell, ‘Shooting an Elephant,’ in The Orwell Reader, p. 3. The words in square brackets are of course my interpolation. 22. The KNIL (Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger) was quite separate from the KL (Koninklijk Leger) in Holland. The Légion Étrangère was almost from the start legally prohibited from operations on continental French soil. 23. Lettres du Tonkin et de Madagascar (1894–1899), p. 84. Letter of December 22, 1894, from Hanoi. Emphases added. 24. Bernard B. Fall, Hell is a Very Small Place: The Siege of Dien Bien Phu, p. 56. One can imagine the shudder of Clausewitz’s ghost. [Spahi, derived like Sepoy from the Ottoman Sipahi, meant mercenary irregular cavalrymen of the ‘Second Army’ in Algeria.] It is true that the France of Lyautey and de Lattre was a Republican France. However, the often talkative Grande Muette had since the start of the Third Republic been an asylum for aristocrats increasingly excluded from power in all other important institutions of public life. By 1898, a full quarter of all Brigadier-and Major-Generals were aristocrats. Moreover, this aristocrat-dominated officer corps was crucial to nineteenth and twentieth-century French imperialism. ‘The rigorous control imposed on the army in the métropole never extended fully to la France d’outremer. The extension of the French Empire in the nineteenth century was partially the result of uncontrolled initiative on the part of colonial military commanders. French West Africa, largely the creation of General Faidherbe, and the French Congo as well, owed most of their expansion to independent military forays into the hinterland. Military officers were also responsible for the faits accomplis which led to a French protectorate in Tahiti in 1842, and, to a lesser extent, to the French occupation of Tonkin in Indochina in the 1880’s . . . In 1897 Galliéni summarily abolished the monarchy in Madagascar and deported the Queen, all without consulting the French government, which later accepted the fait accompli . . .’ John S. Ambler, The French Army in Politics, 1945–1962, pp. 10–11 and 22. 25. I have never heard of an abusive argot word in Indonesian or Javanese for either ‘Dutch’ or ‘white.’ Compare the Anglo-Saxon treasury: niggers, wops, kikes, gooks, slants, fuzzywuzzies, and a hundred more. It is possible that this innocence of racist argots is true primarily of colonized populations. Blacks in America – and surely elsewhere – have developed a varied counter-vocabulary (honkies, ofays, etc.). 26. As cited in Reynaldo Ileto’s masterlyPasyón and Revolution: Popular Movements in the Philippines, 1840–1910, p. 218. Sakay’s rebel republic lasted until 1907, when he was captured and executed by the Americans. Understanding the first sentence requires remembering that three centuries of Spanish rule and Chinese immigration had produced a sizeable mestizo population in the islands.

Tumblr media
This is also from November of last year.
This is a character who I love dearly and always meant to make a design for, but never got around to it. Now I've finally gotten off my lazy butt and made this Best Boy a ref sheet. ^^ So here, have a Thrushpelt.
Here is the reverse side of his design.
I used to headcanon that Whitestorm was Graystripe's father, but when Graystripe's Vow referred to the Willow/White kits as his half siblings, I decided to try and think of a different father for him. After poking around ThunderClan's allegiances for a bit for a suitable tom for the job, I finally settled on Thrushpelt. I know he was Willowpelt's sistser's mentor (though only briefly), but there wasn't anyone closer to Willowpelt's age who was really available, and I see them as only getting together much later, when both of them are older warriors.
As far as I imagine it, Willowpelt missed being a mom after Darkstripe was all grown up, and was good friends with Thrushpelt. When he admitted how much he missed being a dad since Bluestar's litter had died (or so he thought), Willowpelt offered to have a litter with him for them to raise together. They weren't in love or anything, only good friends, but Willowpelt had always been a very chill, easy-going sort of cat, and was perfectly happy with the idea of raising a litter with a good friend who she knew would be an excellent dad. After some thought, Thrushpelt accepted, and thus little Graykit was born.
Unfortunately, Thrushpelt died of an illness when his son was only two moons old. Willowpelt was heartbroken that her dear friend wouldn't get to be around to help raise his son, but she and Thrushpelt made sure that he got as much time with Graykit to be a good dad as he could before he finally passed, and Willowpelt made sure to tell Graykit about his dad even after he was gone, so that Thrushpelt was never forgotten. Thrushpelt now watches over Graystripe from StarClan, waiting for his second son to join him as he enjoys his time with his adopted daughter and son in the stars. Willowpelt eventually found love with Whitestorm seasons later, and Graystripe was always happy to help look after his half-siblings once he rejoined the Clan (and was particularly outraged when Darkstripe tried to kill their little half sister).
For his physical description, Thrushpelt doesn't have any description other than his coloration, so I made up my own build and look for him. I always imagined him as on the taller and scrawnier side, with kinda a scruffy pelt. It just seemed to fit him to me - and it doesn't hurt that he's a quarter WindClan, so he's inherited some of that WindClan skinniness. I used some images of javanese cats as refs. He's got a nice, scruffy, medium/long pelt, though it's not quite as long and thick as his son's - that comes more from Willowpelt.
For his pattern, Thrushpelt is described as a sandy-gray tom with a white flash on his chest and bright green eyes. I based his coloration on lavender cat, a nice lighter dusty-gray color, and I gave him a nice shade of bright green eyes. He's only described with a flash of white on his chest, not an entirely white chest, so I just gave him a little smudgy bit of white on there. I did cheat a little bit by giving him a stripe down the back of his tail that he wasn't described with - but I wanted Graystripe to get that stripe from somewhere, and it's only on his tail, not down his entire back.
Overall, I'm really happy with how he turned out.

Day 3: Be True To Yourself
Aka me literally just infodumping about my Ocs because I love them ♡
Brought to you by Colorvision! Yep, I decided to get off my lazy butt and color traditionally today :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First off, Tiara Depurrnaire (She/Her)! A Sweetypie cat who's partially related to the Snugglemagne family and, in my timeskip AU, Adorabat's future girlfriend. Like Adorabat, she lost her leg to a monster while wandering the King's dungeons. She aspires to be just as brave as Adorabat but lacks the gall, being content to watch and learn from the sidelines. As they both get older Tiara realizes that she is a lesbian, and develops a mutual crush on Adorabat that turns into a relationship. As she ages, Tiara' aspirations to become a hero fade, and she settles for becoming a ballet teacher. She learns to be brave in her own way and unconditionally supports her monster-slaying adventuring partner, no matter how their paths diverge.
Tumblr media
T H E Y (Also I need to post my full adult Adorabat design sometime)
Tumblr media
Next up is Sherbet (They/Them), a Sweetypie rabbit who makes ice cream for a living! I don't really have a backstory for them but I believe they realized they were nonbinary in their younger years (around early middle school age) and have fully embraced their identity! They don't let anything get them down and are eager to cheer up the citizens of Pure Heart Valley, one ice cream cone at a time. They're also good acquaintances with Badgerclops and Adorabat, for obvious reasons. Their eyes function similarly to Badgerclops', as they only open when they feel strong emotions.
Tumblr media
Next (and honestly one of my favorites) is Moa Nola (Xe/Xem), an agender Oriental Shorthair cat who, surprisingly, isn't related to the Mao clan. Xe originally started off as a joke character based on the misspelling of Mao Mao's name in "I'm Mao Mao", but I eventually grew attached to xem and gave xem a full-fledged backstory. Xe comes from a family of fishermen, but after xyr father was killed in a monster attack, xe decided that xe wanted to become a legendary monster hunter. Xe created xyr cloak after xyr first successful monster fight. After being mistaken for the son of Shin Mao too many times, xe used it to xyr advantage and began going under Mao Mao's title for a while. However, after being stopped by Mao Mao himself, xe dropped the act and began looking for a new sense of purpose. Ironically, xe starts collecting antique ventriloquist dummies similar to Mr. Din Danalin.
Tumblr media
Following up on the "based on a misspelling" theme is Rhapsody (She/They), a femme-aligned nonbinary Sweetypie vampire bat inspired by Adorabat's name being mistranslated as "doorbat" in YouTube autocaptions. She is Adorabat maternal cousin, as their mother is Sonara's sister. Rhapsody was heavily impacted by Sonara's death, but rather than becoming tough like Adorabat or overprotective like Eugene, she became more reserved out of fear that they could be next. In other words, she became a doorbat (haha funny). With the arrival of Mao Mao and Badgerclops, plus the defeat of the monster that killed their aunt, Rhapsody begins to come out of her shell and indulges in their biggest passion - music. Like Adorabat she learns to use their voice as a weapon, but hers is more of a siren's song than a sonic screech. In my timeskip AU, they leave Pure Heart Valley to become a popstar, writing songs inspired by her childhood memories and their home. It's obscured by the flag but the marking on her chest is a bleeding heart, emphasizing her passionate drive.
Tumblr media
(Rhapsody's kid and adult forms [kinda old])
+ OCs of mine I didn't feel like making alternate drawings for:
Tumblr media
Buzz-Buzz (Zhe/Ze/Zhey), a demigender Sweetypie bumblebee bat who protects the bees of Pure Heart Valley! Despite zer small stature, zhe is actually an adult, just naturally small. Zhe also grows herbs on the side and volunteers at the Pure Heart Valley hospital. Primarily because zhe has a crush on the head doctor there... (I did not make zer to selfship with Cuddlestein. Nope. Not at all.)
Tumblr media
My Badgermao "fankid", Sai (They/He/It)! I say "fankid" in air quotes because they're from an AU where Badgerclops' spare arm became corrupt and gained a conscience. Their robot arm is actually their body - the rest of their body is a projection of light, similar to the gems from Steven Universe! They have masculine programming (as their AI was made using Badgerclops's DNA a la Cortana from Halo), but identify as agender and use they/he/it pronouns. Originally they began as a blank slate with no personality aside from the programmed personality Badgerclops gave them, but they eventually grow their own personality and moral compass as they analyze the Sheriff's Department's work. Just like Badgerclops, they have a passion for building robots and weapons, and can even modify themselves to fit the situation! Most of their creations are usually for fun, though.
Tumblr media
Anf the last one I have a reference for but not the least, Karma Vesper (She/They)! This one is actually my self-insert, lol. She is a biro-ace demigirl Javanese Cream-Point Cat! Her necklace was a gift from her family, and her hood was a gift from her mentor. After her village was ambushed by criminals, she became a wandering hero, and accidentally stumbled upon Pure Heart Valley while following a report of increased monster activity. At some point during her adventures alone she realized that she was biro-ace, since she felt no sexual attraction but still felt romantic attraction. Around the time she came to Pure Heart Valley she realized that she never really felt, like, 100% a GIRL girl (if that makes sense) and began identifying as a demigirl. (Yes this is my hidden self-actualization story :>) She enjoys researching gemstones and ancient artifacts, and the Ruby Pure Heart immediately caught her attention once she laid eyes on it. While she is still a wandering hero, she has a temporary residence in Pure Heart Valley, where she stays to research the Heart's powers as well as assist the townspeople. Her and the Sheriff's Department didn't start out on the best terms since Mao was worried she was trying to replace them, but they tolerate each other now.
+ the OCs I don't have references for:
I did have a reference for these guys but idk where it is rn ;-;. Anywway, my most recent OCs and also some of my favorite OCs are Bernard and Pierre, a black bear and polar bear respectively (both use He/Him)! They are both gay and in a healthy relationship & live in a cabin in the forest together. They are just. Two old gay granddads and I love them. Anyway! They both met after an accident which caused Bernard to blow out his left knee and Pierre to lose his left hand; they had been best friends since, and boyfriends later on! Bernard is a baker while Pierre is a wood carver, although they indulge in each other's interests as well. For the most part they just stay in their cabin in the forest, but they leave to buy groceries and sell their products.
And the final OC I'm gonna talk about is Storm Mao (They/Them)! They're from an AU where Mao was born in a litter of five, like his sisters. Ever since Storm were young, they felt like weren't "normal" compared to their siblings. They didn't feel like a girl or a boy. After Mao came out as a trans boy, they began questioning themselves further. Eventually they decided to ask Contacts Sister for help, as she was among the smartest of the Mao children. Contacts explained to Storm that there are people who don't identify as a boy or a girl, and Storm realized they weren't alone. Since then, they started identifying as nonbinary and began using they/them pronouns, and their family supported their decision. Aside from them and Mao, their litter siblings are also LGBTQ+ - Mamoru (He/Him) is AroAce, Bernadette (She/Her) is bi and Zhijun (He/Him) is gay. I'd talk about the AU more in a separate post, if anyone wants me too^ ^;;
If I remember any other LGBTQ+ OCs I have, I'll reblog with them ✌

Hey, did I ever mention the fact that I like making catified versions of characters? Because I do, I just haven't really posted about it that much on tumblr.
This is a short animation I made for a comfort character themed multi animator project. Yeah, Lalli is probably the closest thing I have to a comfort character, I relate to him a lot.
About the design: the design is inspired by the official catified design, but I made him a lynx point (pun very much intended), gave him ear tufts, and based his design off of Javanese cats.

Hhhh danganronpa animal au concepts
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are all the sketches I have right now, and I’m currently working on colored refs for these 15, but then I’ll be getting through all the other characters! Ok, now time for not-so-brief explanations~ they’d go below a cut if I could do that on mobile but I don’t know how so,,,, suffer with me :,)
Junko is a fox because foxes are elegant and beautiful, fitting of the ultimate fashionista. They are also deceitful, which fits her and Mukuro’s switch. Mukuro and Junko are almost identical, with the only notable differences being Mukuro’s freckles, and Mukuro having more dark fur, where Junko has more light fur. Junko also has very fluffy ears, while Mukuro’s ears have normal length fur.
Kokichi is a rat because,,, he’s a rat. Nagito was almost a rat as well, but,,,, raccoon rights! Raccoons are equally trash mammals, and have the added bonus of Not Being Tiny. Seriously, raccoons are almost the same size as foxes! The things I learn making these aus.
Speaking of learning that size difference, it’s because of Toko and Byakuya! Byakuya is a fox because of the aforementioned elegance, and general air of superiority I get from foxes. Also kinda a trash mammal, fitting into the trio w/ Kokichi and Nagito. Toko is a raccoon because,,,,,, I wanted her to have hands. I did a raccoon sketch as a joke and originally planned a cat, but I liked how it looked, and the bonus of Hands.
Someone who is actually a cat would be Kyoko! Honestly, I couldn’t have picked a different animal for her if I tried. She’s specifically based on a Javanese cat, a long-furred colorpoint breed. I wanted her to be colorpoint because,,, personal bias. I love colorpoints,, I love Kyoko. Another cat is Chiaki! A cat just,, fit her. I may or may not have been biased by @/thedeerus‘s animal au on that note.
Ok dog time. I mean,, protag time!! Same thing hhh. Hajime and Kaede are the only protags with specific breeds, while the rest are just mutts. Makoto and Komaru are mutts because they’re always on about how they’re just so average and your everyday person, and mutts are pretty average. Shuichi is a mutt because,,, I drew him like That and liked it. He was originally going to be a dog known for their nose, maybe a bloodhound, because,, detective. Kaede is a beagle because I looked up ‘dog playing piano’ and the first result was a beagle. Hajime is a wolfdog because he’s also Izuru, and I like the concept of Izuru as a wolf, but I didn’t want to make Hajime a wolf, so I went halfway. Wolfdog Rights! Him a fluffy boy, he have a little mane and ifksbsndbsns I want to give him all the cuddles
And last dog!! Also last character I have right now hhh is Kaito!! What would be more fitting for Kaito Momota, luminary of the stars, than the first animal to go to space? He’s a mutt, and heavily based off Laika! But still with his own spin :)
And that’s all I have for now! Feel free to leave suggestions for what animals other characters could be in the... comments? replies? I forgot what tumblr calls them hhhhhh bye
I hit the tag limit with this hhhhhhhhhhh

What’s Been Happening to Life Since COVID-19 (In Indonesia)
PI know this text will still be ignored by people because this text is made just because I’m bored and I want to sum up what’s been happening in my country, Indonesia based on what I’ve experience.
Humans life’s aren’t the same anymore. For me and my family we’re still very cautious when it comes to shaking hands or meeting people, but however my father has already started working to his office. My mother, as a stay at home parent stays home, going to the market when she needs to.
Classes are one of the worst things ever. I’ve been going to university and was used to living in a dormitory, now that I’m home, I could say my home doesn’t provide my needs to study. Let’s start with WiFi, its acceptable in my dorm but not at home, since we have PS4 and its not rare that my brothers will download games, it slows the server so much even when I’m just 1 feet away from the WiFi.
I don’t see my friends as often, only when we wanted too which is rare and its hard since lecturers give SO MANY assignments, I have to retake a class too since I got an E in this particular subject. Of course live at home can be amazing but when we were forced to stay at home for a long time, it really gets my nerves everytime. Coordinating with friends during group assignments are hard and now that we can’t see them face to face, building friendship is harder work than before.
Hand sanitizers are mostly gone for the first couple of months, and now more companies are making hand sanitizers. Suddenly it emerges. I have a friend that works as a cashier in a big market, she said when corona virus first outbreak, there was a panic happening and people shops so much for their daily needs that she and the other cashiers have to work overtime, all exhausted. For these inconsiderate people, they deserved the panic when they were diagnosed with the said virus.
Since the outbreak, Indonesia didn’t do lockdown policy, we have what they said PSBB (Pembatasan Sosial Berskala Besar) or in English its Mass Social Distancing. It worked for my area which is West Java. But in Java island, we have Jakarta, Banten, Central Java and East Java. Only Banten and West Java that’s been successfully applied PSBB, since the governments now are starting what they call as “new normal” I don’t think cities like Jakarta or other Javanese cities in East and Central Java are going to last until the second outbreak of COVID-19.
East Java was against this PSBB as far as I know, they didn’t wear masks when they go out, well I could say even during the outbreak everything seems normal, which supposed to be a bad thing. Ignorant people saying “death is in the hands of God, don’t be afraid!” That is partly true but please do be scared, because God doesn’t want His children to be diagnosed with this virus. He wants all His children to be save, not going out unarmed when a killing machine is off the chains.
Yes kids still hung around, but thankfully it reduces over the time. I’m glad that PSBB did good for my city, but since PSBB didn’t work for the areas around me, its still very dangerous.
Mental states of people are different, there are people out there struggling due to being coped up in their homes, having to see their families 24/7 when normally they’re not used to doing it, its stressing (for me) for example, I’m not used to seeing dad at home, now that he is, I don’t know what to do around him. I know this doesn’t make sense, but perhaps some of you understand. Change of behavior is also something that we have to deal with. Emotions are mostly be bubbling right now, we can’t breathe fresh air from outside for the time being when we were so used to doing it before, it frustates us that we can’t do what we were so used to do. Adapting is human’s nature but it takes time for some people.
I get that this text is too long, I don’t even think I’d read it lol. But if you managed to go this far, I’m proud of how patient you are. If you have your own story, post  go post it, I’d love to hear from people too. Use this tag so that we can read each other’s stories!
Cheers!

Horizon Zero Dawn Characters As Cat Breeds
• Aloy; Somali cat
Stockier than an Abyssian, my original choice, and if you go with the ruddy coat pattern it's just as effective. I like to think a ruddy Somali captures the first-glance side of Aloy; freckles, ginger hair, and a tough build from years of hunting and fighting.
Tumblr media
• Ikrie; Norwegian Forest Cat
A bit pointer than, say, a Siberian, and smaller than a Maine coon. Still built for colder climates, with a softer look than other big breeds.

• Mailen; Siberian Cat
Mostly fluff, round and gives off a more serious vibe. Born and bred for the winter, a true Banuk breed if we're being honest.
Tumblr media
• Nil; Javanese cat
This is one of the more personal opinion based decisions. Javanese just have that off-putting aura I get when I see Nil?? Still a gorgeous breed, sort of a sub-type of Siamese. Less vocal, still opinionated, imo a solid fit.

• Ersa; Russian Blue
Like a grown up version of Erend, even in breed. The Russian Blue looks like it's grown into it's predator body, with a more serious demeanor.
Tumblr media
• Erend; British Shorthair
Round, goofy and friend-shaped. Built on the stocky side, and looks like it could take a few hits. Pair a blue coat with Ersa's Russian Blue and they make a good sibling duo.
Tumblr media
• GAIA; Sphinx
Since GAIA is an AI and not a human, I figured the hairless breed would fit quite well. Plus, can u imagine how adorable cat!GAIA would be in a lil sweater.
Tumblr media
• Elisabet; Abyssian
Gives off the same look as Aloy's breed, but as a more sheltered scientist, this breed is a much better fit for Elisabet. More slim than stocky, with the ticked ginger coat that mimics freckles.
Tumblr media
• Avad; Oriental Shorthair/Turkish Van
I'm still split on this one, bc both breeds fit well. On the Van side, the markings just give off this Sun King vibe, with the ginger head markings ya know? But the Oriental has such a unique, royal facial structure that I'm torn.

• Sylens; Tonkinese cat
This cat breed tends to be on the compact/sturdy side with a dark brown gradient for their fur. It just felt like a really good fit for Sylens, plus as a branch of Siamese, they would be oppionated by nature. You could also connect the vocal breed to how Sylens seems to talk his way out of trouble and also get info out of people.
Tumblr media
• Petra; Cymric/Manx
Both are incredibly muscled/stocky breeds and those nubby butts are adorable. I'd lean torwards the Cymric personally, since it's body type is more filled out. It looks like a tough, forge-working breed all right.
• Sona; Japanese Bobtail
A bit lanky, but still well muscled, just like a seasoned warrior.
• Vala; Pixiebob
The youngest of the family, so this breed fits the best. It still has the recognizable nubby tail, but with a softer look. She hasn't been on the frontline like her mother or brother yet, so the kit fluff is still prominent.
• Varl; American Bobtail
Not as lanky as it's Japanese counterpart, it fits the son of the war chief very well. Mirroring her body type, without the hunters build just yet.
• Bast; American Shorthair
A basic bitch, bc I couldn't care less.
• Aratak; Ragdoll/Birman
Longer-haired breeds to combat the cold, leaning towards Birman for the more serious looks they have. Plus, the standard colors for both breeds would be similar to Orea's Snowshoe.
• Orea; Snowshoe
I feel like the name explains it pretty well, with a softer more curious look than Aratak's breeds. And maybe I'm biased bc I love Snowshoe's but oh well.
• CYAN; Peterbald
Sort of like the Sphynx for GAIA, I just went with a breed that stood out to mark her as an AI.
• HADES; Lykoi
Scrappy and off putting. I love the breed, but it's a good match compared to the hairless AI's.
• Rost; Maine Coon
Him big!!!!
• Teb; Singapura
Tiny and in no way, shape, or form a tough fighter. Probably the smallest cat breed, apart from Munchkins; which fits Teb who barely seems to age in between the first and second time Aloy meets him.
• Vanasha; Turkish Angora/Persian
I really couldn't decide bc both are equally regal and intimidating??? But I'd lean for the Angora, since Vanasha has abs for days and is definitely not just another pretty face. Plus, Angora's are a much healthier breed than Persian.
• Talanah; Bengal cat
Resembling a true wild cat, there isn't much else to this. She's a hunter to the core, and should look like one.
• Olin; Exotic Shorthair
He gots a squish face. That's it.
