Sokka, nervously: I'm in love with Zuko... Any thoughts?
Katara: And prayers, you're going to need them.

I have so many thoughts about Sokka and Kya. I feel like Sokka is never given the chance to grieve, when in reality he’s the oldest and probably has much clearer memories of her than Katara does. Every time I say that, someone always says “but he said himself he doesn’t remember her face!” but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t remember her.
He remembers her holding him close on nights when it was so cold even the animal furs couldn’t keep him warm, curled up against her chest. He remembers her placing him on her lap, a baby Katara in his arms as she nuzzled into his hair and told him what a good big brother he would grow up to be. He remembers her taking him out in the canoe to cheer him up after his dad insisted he was too young to go hunting. He remembers her forehead kisses.
But the pain proves to be too much and he doesn’t deal with his grief the way Katara does. He isn’t open about it, he doesn’t get a chance to process on his own terms. He shuts it down, he has a responsibility to his sister, his tribe and later, the world. and because of these feelings he’s repressed, because he never gets to talk about her, cry over her, because he has to appear to be the strongest person, the big brother, the protector, his fear of forgetting her manifest into him forgetting her face. a common trauma response that kids have when they’ve lost a parent, and it’s so tragic because Sokka looks just like her.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel the loss of his mother, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t remember her and it sure as hell doesn’t mean he doesn’t love her as much as Katara does, it means they deal with things differently. When Katara said “you didn’t love her the way I did” it might have hurt, but I don’t think she meant she loved her more, I think it means they loved her differently. they both saw different things in Kya and enact their love for her in various ways.
But Sokka should get to process his grief, should get to cry and be comforted. He should be able to let his memories of her flow, and enter his mind without guilt and be able think about them when he needs some respite.

"katara got mommified" wrong "sokka got dadified" wrong "katara and sokka both stepped up to fill empty roles that their absent (not by choice) parents left behind, forcing sokka to step up as katara's protector and for katara to step up as sokka's caretaker. their relationship is changed and they can never go back to being just siblings even with hakoda in the picture or even with other adult figures in their lives because they have mental illnesses only they understand" correct

*Sokka getting dragged out of the water by Katara after being bitten by a shark*
Sokka: THIS IS A STATISTICAL ANOMALY, IF THE SHARK WANTED ME DEAD I WOULD BE DEAD
Katara: Sokka stop it! We have to get you to the hospital!
Sokka: I DO NOT CONSENT TO ANYONE HUNTING THIS SHARK. ITS MY FAULT FOR BEING IN ITS HABITAT

LOK did Sokka and Katara dirty
Nowadays, I forget LOK even exists but I realized how LOK did the water tribe siblings dirty in opposite ways.
For Sokka, we know he had a great political career. He helped to protect Korra from the Red Lotus and he served as a councilman in Republic City. And he has the statue to prove it. But what about his personal life?? What happened to Suki? Did he have a family?? Was Sokka's life career-driven with no loving home life?
For Katara, her legacy is mainly about her family. Besides the bloodbending law and teaching Korra, there is hardly anything else of note that Katara did. She's a world-class healer but where is the evidence for that? She was not even present at Yakon's blood-bending trial. While Zuko and Toph get to be badasses in their old age, Katara is just a lonely old woman tucked away at the South Pole, not even lifting a finger when her family is in danger.
So Sokka got the better end of the deal!
Tumblr media
What little we got of Sokka painted him in a good light. He was an accomplished politician so at least that facet of his life was explored well. Meanwhile, Katara doesn't seem to interact with her own grandkids enough for Meelo to recognize her :(. It's bad enough that she wasn't present for a high-profile bloodbending trial, but Katara couldn't be bothered to attend Jinora's master ceremony. So Katara fails at family too. Poor Katara. Look what Bryke did to you Queen. Bryke couldn't even give you a waterbending grandchild as a token of appreciation :(

So…Katara and Sokka canonically knew their grandfather?? I never caught this before 😭
I got back to my rewatch of atla and in S1 E5 (when Aang dresses up as “Bonzoo Pippenpadlopsicopolis II” in Omashu) Sokka says “great! Now you look just like my grandfather.”
Tumblr media
I’m sorry. GRANDFATHER?? Are we just gonna slide right past that??
As far as grandparents go, we only visually see and get interactions with their grandmother (or Gran Gran) Kanna. Then there’s Pakku who, as we learn later in the series, used to be engaged to Kanna. But Katara and Sokka don’t learn that information until later in the series, and even then it’s never implied that Pakku is Hakoda’s father.
Which begs the question, who is this grandfather that Sokka mentions in Omashu?? Is he still alive yet never shown in swt flashbacks? The fact that Sokka was the only “man” left behind in his tribe is a fairly large point in his charecter arc, so if their grandfather is still alive, has he been fighting the war with Hakoda this whole time? Or had he passed away fairly recently given Sokka’s ability to recall his image? And if he has passed, we can assume his death wasn’t related to the fire nation, or else Sokka and Katara would be unable to joke about him with such ease.
This is so interesting to me and I wish the concept was explored more in canon, but I also get that the series had a limited run time so the bits of Worldbuilding/character-building they could dive into were limited as well.
