Primo (he/him)

He doesn't really play himself, but he's very willing to watch.

He likes two types of games: the ones where you get to build, farm and make friends (The Sims series, Minecraft, Stardew Valley) and games where choices matter and there's a mystery to be solved (Detroit: Become Human, Baldur's Gate 3, Life is Strange).

If you play games where you get to build, he asks if you'd mind letting him give you design ideas, as he was always interested in architecture. Your in-game houses never looked better, he's an excellent architect.

He also memorizes all the gifts and recipees from Stardew Valley for you. Considers it a good brain excercise.

With the other kind of games, he is fascinated by all the options they offer and the concept of morality.

Although he does think Detroit: Become Human got way out of hand with the plot. It was one of the few times you heard him mutter cursewords in Italian.

He does enjoy Neil Newbom's performance in games, though. He's the only reason Primo bought you Resident Evil: Village and insisted you play together.

Secondo (he/him)

Well, he does like classic arcades.

And surprisingly, it doesn't take long for him to grow familiar with a joystick. So if you have a console, he's pretty good at it after a few days.

He's weirdly good and Doom. It's very concerning how good he is at Doom.

And MovieStarPlanet. This man spent so much money on MovieStarPlanet it's insane.

He needs his character to look fabulous, after all. He will actually make it a point of pride that his character is dressed better than yours.

He plays as a female character, by the way.

Naturally, he played the Barbie games, too. His favorite is The Barbie Diaries: High School Mystery.

Terzo (he/they)

Terzo is rather decent at classic platformers, like the original Mario Brothers game or the old Sonic games.

You show them a dating simulator and the bastard is obsessed.

He gets a new phone just to have more dating simulator games on his phone.

This is all fine and dandy until he he gets his hands on Mystic Messenger and stayed up at nights to play the night chatrooms.

On maximum volume. On maximum brightness.

Needless to say, Omega was not amused. Neither were you.

It gets even weirder when Terzo starts throwing around phrases in Korean that they learned from the game.

Korean with a very thick Italian accent.

Omega is losing his mind, especially after Terzo, having not gotten enough sleep one night, accidentally tried to perform a ritual from the Arcana, rather than the one he was supposed to.

You both end up on technology detox as Omega insists it's crucial for you two to touch grass.

Copia (he/him)

We all remember him playing Driving Miss Daisy.

We also all remember that he sucked at playing Driving Miss Daisy.

He's good at co-op games, though!

Like Minecraft or Raft. Or even Stardew Valley (that one mod is forever in my heart).

Especially Minecraft. Copia yearns for the mines.

You find a bigger hill or a mountain in the game? He insists to dig a room in it as your first base.

You leave for a bathroom break and suddenly Copia's wearing diamond armor and you have a giant underground empire.

You know he didn't cheat, he doesn't even know how to input cheats in the game.

He's the same in Stardew Valley. He was at the bottom of the mine with the original pickaxe and a crappy sword in less than a week in-game.

Science can't explain how he did that. Or why the mines is the only thing he's good at in those games. He sucks at everything else, he is a mines-only boy.

Old Nihil (he/him)

He is not going anywhere near the computer after Swiss and Sunshine showed him Five Nights At Freddy's.

He is not risking that shit again.

He will sit in the corner of the room and sulk if you play video games while he's around.

Young Nihil (he/him)

Even in his youth, he was older than video games and not very smart.

He gets way too distressed about the games so you put him on a gaming ban for the sake of both his and your own sanity.

He does like watching you play, though. Especially as he cuddles up to you.

He keeps complimenting you while you play. He's proud of you!

Young Sister Imperator (she/her)

She would not have the time.

As much as she loves you, it's almost always a no.

She doesn't mind if you play something while you're together, she's just... not gonna have the time to actually play.

Although considering it's the 60s, it's probably more likely to assume she just hears about you going on about arcades.

Which she doesn't mind, even if the games seem completely absurd to her.

Old Sister Imperator (she/her)

She will die of embarassment if anyone finds out, but she's a sucker for old Pokémon games.

She even has the first generation Pokédex memorized.

You leard that by accident while looking for mods for Minecraft and she automatically quotes the Bulbasaur Pokédex entry as you gush over the cute creature.

She's embarassed to say the least. You totally use it as blackmail on her.

And pay for it in the bedroom.

Tell me more about your feelings on Hazbin Hotel.

Part of me doesn’t want to answer this question, because of how popular this show is on Tumblr.

And I know that people will be like.

“What do you know, you’re a Christian, of Course you’d have some problems with it.”

Yes, I am going to disclose that. I am a Christian. Not ashamed of that. Still working to be a better one. But I can be objective enough to view it as a writer, and that at most my personal bias will only be a slight enhancement of my view.

And these are my unfiltered thoughts on this show.

But for my opinion of Hazbin hotel. The original Pilot was interesting. A place trying to reform sinners in the last place people would think to be reformed. (Spoilers ahead)

That pilot premise is interesting. You see Hell as a cesspool of the absolute worse people. (Like Los Angeles but with more cannibalism) and it takes the “Hell is other people approach”

The songs were fine, the animation was great, and the characters introduced were intriguing. So much potential depth to them, theories can speculate. And of course the big question of. “Can someone in hell actually be redeemed?” And we even have a character pointing out “of course not, they’re in hell. Their chance was before this?”

It raised this question of, if you know your doomed, why try to be a good person? And That is fascinating.

Then the show finally airs. And it’s just another “Heaven is corrupt” storyline. And it’s not even done well.

(The whole retelling of creation made my eyes roll. Trying to make Lucifer to be the good guy? How original (sarcasm). And not even done well. Because it’s Charlie narrating this, which makes it be like Charlie knows all this and is doing all of this pointlessly)

Hells gonna rise up against it and all that. The hotel was basically pointless.

The show goes on to constantly contradict itself at numerous points that leaves me more confused.

Yes there is an interesting character (Alastor) but outside of a great soundtrack and animation… the writing of the show is a mess.

It feels both rushed and too slow. The characters are speedrunning their arcs, yet the plot is crawling.

Let’s then not forget the fact that Angel power and weapons are said to be the only thing that Perma kills sinners and angels. Yet sir pretentious dies and instead of permadead, goes to heaven? What fucking logic is that?

Also it says how only Angel weapons and powers can hurt angels (they make a whole point about it) only to show Vaggie and Lute have a whole ass fight hurting eachother with tables and s***. Unless they’ve been blessed them chairs…

Also where do the souls that perma die go? Detroit? Because if Sir pretentious can go to heaven after dying, what the deal with all this? Is Hell actually hell? Seems more like purgatory.

And then you include the helluva boss lore as they take place in the same universe. And MORE questions get added.

But that’s a can of worms for another time.

More importantly, Charlie, the main character hardly gets any development moments. Her issues are TOLD not showed.

Vaggie is also a mess too, like her whole thing is protecting Charlie, and helping her. But then she gets told that she has to fight For Love and that’s how to win? You mean what she’s BEEN DOING THE WHOLE TIME?!

All the stuff with Angel Dust, the writing for that is fine when showing the messed up situation he’s in, but then after the Song “Loser, Baby” he’s suddenly months sober? Speedrunning a bit too much.

Side note: HOW DOES HEAVEN NOT KNOW HOW PEOPLE GET INTO HEAVEN?!

Like they genuinely seem like they don’t know? From my understanding, there is no Big Man making all the calls. Thats not corruption. Thats incompetence.

So if it’s just angels in charge, THEY should know. Like show that they’re tilting the scale or maybe denying certain people that DO follow the criteria. Because with the incompetency of it, it basically leaves the door open for potentially EVERYONE to get into heaven.

Yet then the show shows how awful people in hell are, like it’s clear there are people that deserve hell. Maybe I’m overthinking it, maybe I’m not thinking about it enough. But it’s a really dumb system.

But the biggest glaring hole in this show is the fact that there is no point for heaven to actually do the purge in the first place.

Hell being overpopulated shouldn’t matter. Only Angel power and weapons can actually hurt angels. Why would they worry about an uprising. Heaven could easily wipe hell. The only people that could probably do damage is Lucifer and the leaders of the rings of hell. And even then… That’s like 7 against ALL OF HEAVEN!? Even if we assume overlords and some high level demons could do similar… Heaven still takes it. (But then again the Lute and Vaggie fight might contradict that. Hard to say it’s so confusing)

That all aside, is it an awful show? No. It’s just so riddled with plotholes and pacing issues.

Would I recommend this show to people? No.

Would I recommend the sound track? Probably, the songs are catchy. Can’t deny that.

Everyone has their own opinions and tastes, but the show has too much of a mess for me.

Chapter One: Unexpected Visitor

��Is this all you’ve got?”

You side-eyed the dwarf beside you like he’d spoken gibberish.

“What do you expect, Durl? Fimbulwinter’s rough out there.” You gestured to your snow-covered garments for good measure.

Durlin’s lips formed a thin line as he watched you drop unceremoniously onto his office chair, your legs folded up underneath you in a completely unladylike fashion. It was an odd quirk, but he’s since gotten used to it over the many years he’s known you.

“I know, I know. All I’m saying is that your loyal customers are going to be disappointed...”

“Well, sorry, but I only have one pair of arms to work with!”

He sighed at that, opting to ditch the rucksack of food you’d brought and join you on a chair of his own.

“Something on your mind, kid?” You drawled, taking the words right out of his mouth.

He gave you a look, “Well?”

“Ugh, you know how it goes.” You ran a hand down your face, expression tired. “It’s just – Dad’s gone on a bit of a bender again, and I don’t know if I can deal with it this time. It’s getting harder to manage the trade on my own, you know.”

That and it’s not what I want to do anymore, you carried on in your thoughts. You couldn’t leave him to fend for himself, however, despite the growing resentment you held towards him.

“You want me to send Lúnda over there? Straighten him out?”

You managed a half-smile at the thought of the heady female dwarf handing your father’s drunken ass to him. “Nah, I’m sure she’s got better stuff to do…”

He shrugged, lifting a tankard of mead you don’t remember him having to his lips. “Don’t say I didn’t ask.”

“Where the Hel did that come from?”

“What?”

“The drink? When...” You rolled your eyes after a small pause. “Dwarves.”

“Hey, none of that.”

“Yes, sir. Sorry, sir.”

He chuckled as you proceeded to pet Dìnner, enjoying the amicable silence until the sun reached its peak outside. Though ridiculously muggy, it was a welcome change from the freezing cold weather of Midgard. Finally warm enough, you shrugged off your outer layers, leaving you in a plain white long-sleeved tunic, dark brown pants and your favourite pair of knee-high winter boots.

The front door creaking open behind you snapped out of your reverie. You went to turn, but Durlin practically leapt from his seat and grasped you by the shoulders with shaky hands, eyes wide with what seemed like apprehension.

This can’t be good…

“Hey, tell you what,” he laughed nervously. ���Why don’t you go see your father, and I’ll send Lúnda over as soon as she returns.”

“I literally just got done telling you that I can’t deal with him.”

He wasn’t having it, however, and began dragging you from your seat to begin pushing you through the back door. The one that you hardly ever used.

“I’ll. Send. Lúnda.” He urged.

By now, you were more than confused and fumbling to gather your things. You weren’t ready to go home just yet. The previous hunting session was a long one, and it didn’t help that you nearly got jumped by a bunch of raiders parading the realm under the guise of 'protecting their kind'.

Right. Because attempting to mug your own kind is ‘protecting’ them so damn well.

An exaggerated cough reverberated throughout the room, stopping the two of you in your tracks. With your back still to the stranger, Durlin finally resorted to shooting you a pleading look.

“Tsk, tsk. Have you really become so uncultured that even a simple introduction is beneath you, dwarf?”

The rude comment had you turning on your heels instantly, brows furrowed in astonishment. It was safe to say the smooth voice certainly matched his appearance; tall, fair-skinned with braided dirty blond hair and an arrogant smirk adorning his begrudgingly handsome features. It was the glowing bifröst eyes that really stood out, though, and you immediately understood why your friend was so unsettled.

This was that asshole he’d told you about – the one that burned him as punishment for trying to rebel against the Aesir all those years ago. It was a sore subject for him and quite often the topic he revisited most when in a drunken stupor.

“Of course,” Durlin resigned, slowly making his way back to the centre of the room. He mumbled your name so quietly you almost didn’t hear him, but the asshole certainly did.

“Heimdall,” he offered, a little too proudly for your liking.

The God of Foresight and Surveillance, Herald of Ragnarök, and one of Odin’s many sons. You knew of him. From what you’ve heard and, frankly, could already tell, this guy had an ego the size of Asgard itself and was a giant pain in the ass to deal with.

“Pleasure,” you grit out, unable to hide your distaste.

To your dismay, your comment only served to widen that smirk of his, and he quickly encouraged the two of you to join him outside, most likely so he could actually stand upright. You were surprised he even entered in the first place, what with how tall he was. Nothing in comparison to many other gods you’d met, sure, but still enough to hinder smooth movement within a dwarf’s dwelling (not that you didn’t struggle with it yourself, but you were fairly smaller than him).

The three of you stepped out onto the street, and you glanced around, confused. The settlement was normally pretty busy around this time of day, with plenty of dwarves moving about to work on their current projects or open up stalls. Right now, however, it resembled a ghost town. Was this guy really that much trouble?

One glance at Durlin’s scarred head told you yes, he really was that much trouble.

Heimdall’s bifröst eyes once again landed on your form. His own distaste became increasingly evident as he observed your simplistic attire. It was a far cry from his own luxurious clothing, well-adorned in quality leather, armour, and a multitude of gold accents to boot. Not to mention, he looked like he’d had a full night’s rest, unlike yourself.

Soon enough, his eyes met yours, and you shuddered involuntarily at the strange pulling sensation tickling at the forefront of your mind. Was this what it felt like to have the god of foresight poking around up there? It wasn’t overly unpleasant, but it still irritated you. It reminded you of someone snooping through your diary without permission.

You clenched your fingers tightly, feeling your own powers rise in an attempt to guard yourself. You’re not entirely sure how it happened, but you felt it when his grasp slipped, denied from any attempt at getting a full read on you.

“What’s this?” He muttered, that obnoxious smirk fading into a frown.

One moment he was more than eight feet away, and now, your senses were overwhelmed as he invaded your personal space. His height hardly intimidated you, but you could feel the raw power emanating from his form as he glared down at you, growing more and more pissed off as he tried and failed to enter your mind once more.

He definitely didn’t like that.

“And just who are you exactly?” He seethed through golden teeth.

He grasped your wrist in a tight hold before you could step back, tugging you forward so that your chests were only a breadth apart. Durlin was stammering over his words somewhere behind you, attempting to quell the situation before it turned into anything more.

“I’m afraid you’re gonna have to be a little more specific than that.” You responded poorly. Where the hell your courage was coming from, you had idea.

His jaw tensed, “Must I dumb it down for you, filth?”

You so badly wanted to call him a name, too, but you weren’t that stupid. You knew you were already walking on mighty thin ice as it is, what with him being related to Odin and all. If the old codger caught wind of your true origins, you’d be screwed to Hel and back.

“I believe I was already introduced, Heimdall.” His hold finally loosened enough for you to wrench your arm back and create some much-needed space between the two of you. “Anyhow, I’m taking you up on your offer, Durl. Tell Lúnda she is more than welcome to stay for dinner.”

You shot one final glare to the Aesir god before leaving the pair of them to it. Even as you turned away, you knew he still regarded you with a sour expression on his face. If it weren’t for whatever business he was on, you were sure he would’ve kicked up more of a fuss, but you clearly weren’t his priority at the moment, and you were more than glad for it.

TEMPLE OF THE FUZZ WITCH Unleash Magnum Opus, ‘Apotheosis’

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

We introduced you to TEMPLE OF THE FUZZ WITCH in our compilation Doomed & Stoned in Detroit and the band subsequently played Ohio Doomed & Stoned Festival in 2019.

Now past the pandemic years, the band's sound has matured and evolved to encompass frightening black metal textures, in addition to the stalwart doom sound they forged in the beginning. On their third LP 'Apotheosis' (2024), Temple of the Fuzz Witch execution is nothing short of tight, demonstrating an uncanny penchant for conjuring apocalyptic atmospheres. Every member of the team is on point and collaborate to create something dark and powerful.

While not pitched as a concept album, savvy listeners will pick up on the subtext of fallen angels, drawing from Biblical, Zoroastrian, mystical, and traditional lore to create a singular work of terror that could well be a sequel to Dante's Inferno.

Apotheosis is the process of becoming deity (an idea long held by Egyptian, Greek, Buddhist and Christian beliefs), so perhaps this album concerns the rise of those angels who fell like lightning to our planet after a failed coup against The Almighty in heaven. Now is their time to rise again and terrorize mankind, as foretold in St. John's Revelation, The Books of Enoch, Kabbalah, and Milton's Paradise Lost.

Joe Peet's blistering bass welcomes us to "A Call To Prey," with bravura drumming from Taylor Christian and Noah Bruner's grungy guitars following not far behind. We prey upon your fear sings frontman Noah with windswept ire. One could imagine hearing this voice echo in the dead of night over moonlit hills and forests.

"Wight" is a foreboding doomer with elements of black metal. Noah teeters between jaded vocals with menacing growls. Wight is a reference to a ghostly creature, and there's sinister, foggy element to the song, as evil spirits vow:

We’ll break you Damned You’ll never be free We’ll break you For all eternity

"Nephilim" made me recall how damningly heavy Temple of the Fuzz Witch was at Ohio Doomed and Stoned Fest. You can get a sense of it with a pair of good speakers, but seeing them live punches even harder. Vocals vary in character between forlorn cries, as depressed hushes declare, "You will see, I will feed." Fiery yells and guttural rumbling join ravaging drumwork and hailing tremeloes as the song progresses.

"Bow Down" lives in familiar stoner-doom territory, with southern sludge riffing suggesting a revelrous lot dedicated to the worship of their master. Here the singing here is clear, clean, and resonant, intersected by harsh vocals that shout defiantly: Bow down and worship the sky, we pass beyond the glowing light.

"Sanguine" has become one of my favorite words, lately, though I've struggled for an appropriate reason to include it in my writing. It basically means making the best of a bad situation, remaining confident despite the odds, optimistic even when faced with nihilistic uncertainty. Lyrics allude to "Yahweh's condemned," "diabolic souls" who were "cast into swine" by God's Son, and now look to overtake Earth when Satan is loosed from the Bottomless Pit. Bittersweet riffs and damning low end remind me of Purple Hill Witch, and there are some badass chord progressions here. This one has been lingering in my head for days.

"Cursed" gives us little clue as to who the Cursed are, other than they have "sought the watchers in the blacks" and that their "moment has now passed" and now "there's no return." The Watchers are most likely fallen angels from the Book of Enoch, the Nephilim referenced in the book of Genesis. Maybe the cursed ones were acolytes of the Nephilim, but we're given only scraps, hints, fragments to piece together the mystery.

"Raze" opens with muted drums and a swarm of distorted guitar noise that almost seems like a portent of the great horde, here to "end all humans." It takes the perspective of the Fallen, who are still loyal to Lucifer. I have carried his black mark, all the way from the very start.

Strumming arpeggios suggest the clock is ticking in "Apostate," one of my favorite tracks of the record for its sheer dread. Downtuned, dissonant guitar chords make the ire of Noah's roaring vocals all the more convincing, as four lines are repeated thrice:

Await the hallows Swallow the earth The apostates Filled with dread and woe

"Ashes" brings the album to a head with another highlight of the record, a slow headbanger if there ever was one. Vocals are terrifying, referencing "vows of the damned" and Ahriman the evil spirit of early Iranian religions -- the very embodiment of destruction.

About the album, the band says: “The lyrics and concept as an album are more overt and less cryptic than the previous Temple releases. Everything is bigger, heavier, and darker. Rather than making just another doom record, we wanted to do something that stepped outside of the box a little bit. Established fans will still find catchy riffs that are staples of doom but will be surprised with some new twists on the genre with the introduction of blackened vocals and some more up-tempo tracks.

Lyrically the album is deeply rooted in the esoteric and spiritual. We came at the album with a very introspective mindset, and each of us was able to add a little bit of our own soul to it. I think when people hear the lyrics and music together they'll find something fresh, but dark, to connect with.”

Prairiewolf - Paradise Found Records, Boulder, Colorado, July 1, 2023

Given what goes on most of the time here on Doom & Gloom — the constant sharing of bootleg-y live recordings — I've been hilariously hesitant about sharing bootleg-y live recordings of my own band. Prairiewolf! "Aren't there too many imperfections here?" I think to myself. But imperfections are part of the deal, right? One of the reasons I love this shit is that it's a moment in time captured, the proverbial lightning in a bottle. Sometimes it's transcendent, sometimes it isn't. The moment is always magic, though.

Anyway! Last month, while Dead & Co. were soundchecking up at Folsom Field, Prairiewolf played an afternoon in-store at Paradise Found, Boulder's finest record shop. Is a record store Prairiewolf's natural habitat? Maybe! PF's Patrick Selvage was expertly twisting dials and gave us a great SBD recording of the whole thing; and Erik "Detroit Lightning" Heath had flown in just to make an audience recording (kidding, he was there for D&Co., but it was a happy coincidence).

Now, you can experience it all over on Archive.org! With a little bit of time between now and the gig, I'm not hearing the imperfections anymore; the 'Wolf sounds great, if I do say so myself. A bunch of tunes from our debut LP (did I mention the vinyl is back in stock???), some covers (Kraftwerk, Alice Coltrane, Don Cherry, etc.) and even a sprinkling of new material destined for LP #2. Check it out!

THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD by David Kirby

“Everyone’s good in a crisis,” says my brother-in-law’s wife to my brother-in-law, who seems less than pleased to have this information, he having just said, “I’m good in a crisis” in response to her assertion that he’s not really good at anything:

picking up after himself, taking turns with the kids, cleaning the kitchen after a big meal that she has shopped for and prepared. Bravado, the marvelous, the startling: these aren’t as impressive as that which is steady, consistent,

reliable. Not Faustus but Penelope. Jack Gilbert says as much in his poem “The Abnormal is Not Courage,” which describes a 1939 Polish cavalry charge against German tanks, their sabers flashing as cannon fire cuts them to pieces,

although the best thing about this story is that it never happened: the cavalry came across lightly-armed German infantry and dispersed them, though the Poles themselves were routed when German reinforcements

arrived and fired on them with machine guns. The tanks appeared only after the battle was over, as did journalists who saw the tanks and the dead men and the horses and drew the wrong conclusion, although

in a way the cavalry charge actually worked, since it halted the German advance long enough for a Polish battalion of foot soldiers to retreat to safety. But isn’t the story better the way Gilbert tells it? Who wants to hear

about a mistake? If you’re going to tell a story, make it a good one. Be patient. When 18-year-old John James Audubon came to America, he found some Eastern Phoebes nesting in a cave and, having heard

that they returned to the same spot to nest every year, he decided to test that idea, so for days he sat in the cave with them and read a book until they were used to him and let him tie string to their legs to identify them,

and, sure enough, the next year the same birds were back. Don’t try too hard, in other words. “Human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we beat out tunes for bears to dance to,” says Flaubert, “when we long to move the stars

to pity.” Really? The stars don’t need us. The stars are fine. It’s the bears who need dance music. On your feet, Smokey! Here’s one you’ll like— I wrote it just for you. Besides, every hundredth time

who made him famous in a play called Cyrano de Bergerac in which his love for the beautiful Roxane is thwarted because Rostand gave him a large and unsightly nose, an assertion as exaggerated as the false Polish cavalry charge

and thus, like that invention, a key element in turning a good story into a great one. Gordon Lightfoot’s hit song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” was riddled with so many inaccuracies that the singer-songwriter

agonized over his sending the doomed freighter to Cleveland, for example, when it was really headed for Zug Island when it sank on Lake Superior in 1975, and the families of the twenty-nine men who perished in the wreck

met to mourn in the Mariners’ Church of Detroit and not, in Lightfoot’s re-phrasing, the Maritime Sailors’ Cathedral, but his producer and long-time friend Lenny Waronker told him not to worry about

the facts, to play to his artistic strengths and “just tell a story.” The Poles weren’t stupid. At the time of the 1939 cavalry charge, their cavalry was already being organized into motorized brigades.

After all, who won the war? Audubon’s tying strings onto the legs of the Eastern Phoebes is the first known incident of banding birds. Cyrano didn’t have a big nose, but Rostand gave him one.

“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” charted at #1, and before long shipping regulations were changed to include survival suits, positioning systems, depth finders, increased freeboard, more frequent inspection of vessels.

None of this would have happened if Gordon Lightfoot had made sure all his facts were correct and the song had turned out to be a dud. Writing isn’t hard. You just have to be patient. You just have to get everything right.
