i’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and i wanna hear your thoughts on it:

jet is kind of sokka’s hama. he’s who sokka could have been, if he didn’t have katara to support him — much like hama is who katara could have been, if she didn’t have sokka to support her.

i just think there’s a few neat comparisons to be made with jet & hama (and their episodes as a whole).

hmmmm……. there’s a certain kind of appealing symmetry to this claim on its face — sokka and jet are both the leaders of children who must be ruthless and occasionally employ underhanded tactics to achieve their goals — but I actually think that notion does a great disservice to katara. yes, hama and jet perform a very similar function narratively; yes, hama resembles a “dark telos” for katara and thus a sort of trial, and so is stands to reason that jet would also be sokka’s dark telos and trial, since he thwarts jet’s plan much in the same way that katara stops hama’s bloodbending. but like… is that actually true? at all?? “jet” is not actually a sokka episode; it is a katara episode.

sokka doesn’t actually learn anything in this episode or grow in any meaningful way, he’s basically just correct from start to finish. sokka never once experiences the destructive impulse of prioritizing revenge over justice, he is never power-hungry, and he never feels the need to assert himself in a way that “proves” something to his oppressors. if anything, sokka’s worst impulse is his tendency for self-destruction. but you know who does sink into their grief and prioritize destructive revenge? (I wonder…)

both jet and hama exist as trials for katara, eminently appealing figures (hot cool boy who shares her pain and sympathetic elder who shares her burden) in her life who are not what they seem. sokka is immediately suspicious of both of them, and katara is immediately taken with them. katara’s ultimate trial is, of course, in “the southern raiders,” when she is overtly compared to jet by aang, and when she uses the tools of violence she learned from hama in a moment of pure rage and grief. katara prioritizing her humanity is the moment that she fully challenges her potential for becoming them. and it’s not because she’s listening to sokka and appreciating all that he’s done for her, it’s because of aang’s influence, the ways in which he has loved and supported and inspired her to love herself more than she despises her oppressors.

I think people have a tendency to assume that jet is sokka’s narrative foil, before he is katara’s, because they share a few superficial similarities and sokka stands up to him in a more productive way, but jet is nothing like sokka beyond those superficial aspects, whereas he specifically exists to foreshadow katara’s own descent. if anything, the mechanist sort of represents sokka’s dark telos, since he sacrifices his principles for the sake of keeping his people alive and he prioritizes technological innovation in the necessity of war over the preservation of important, sacred sites of cultural heritage in the name of science, which is an impulse sokka definitely possesses and needs to be curbed (by aang). and you could also claim that kya and yue are sokka’s dark teloi, as martyr figures who embodied his fantasies of heroism (which vastly differ from katara’s fantasies of heroism, of course).

but, i would also argue that sokka is himself a “dark telos,” to aang. sokka is the self-negating, depersonalizing, hollow and ruthless figure that aang can never let himself become. jet is a portent designed for katara specifically, a warning to never sink into her grief and rage too fully to wade back to the surface. but sokka is nothing like jet, and never has been. he may come out of his interactions with jet looking quite good, but that really proves nothing. katara isn’t influencing him to be less power-hungry and manipulative and vengeful — no one is; he simply isn’t like that. that doesn’t mean he isn’t himself a portent, however. and that, to me, is far more interesting than a more superficially pleasing yet arbitrary and reductive appeal to “symmetry.”

I'm hoping episode 3 let's Ruby see the dark side of the Doctor. I feel that adds a very important dynamic to a Doctor-companion relationship, when they see how dark he can be and still choose to travel with him early on.

Rose watching Nine drag Cassandra back to die. Eleven yelling at Amy "Nobody human has anything to say to me today!" Donna begging Ten to stop drowning the spider babies, and then again to go back and save someone in Pompeii.

Fifteen has been FUN and I know he can do emotional range, I've seen his fear and his tears already. But I want to see him dark, and I want to see Ruby respond to that. I think it would add a LOT of depth to their relationship and is something missing.

Plus showcasing the Doctor's flaws (selfishness) will make him a much more interesting character. I want to see some conflict between the Doctor and Ruby.

You know, considering that new untitled Peach game is a bit like Luigi’s Mansion with how it puts a Mario character in a new environment with new game mechanics, I’m kinda hoping Peach gets her own original villain the same way Luigi was given King Boo.

Hell, with Super Mario RPG coming back, which has many original characters, and with the characters from the Peach teaser being something other than Toads, it seems Nintendo might be willing to dip their toes into original characters again. So what’s better to start making new characters than by giving Peach her own bad guy ! Also the new Mario Bros game has some new characters as well from the looks of it, so again, it’s possible !

And don’t get me wrong, Bowser is absolutely iconic and I do enjoy the irony of Peach battling against him. But with this game not being a platformer, and again taking into consideration Luigi’s Mansion, it would be a fun change of pace for Peach to have a new villain in her own series (god I hope this game becomes a series of several games!!!). Plus, it seems Peach will be more and more playable in mainline games, meaning more Bowser beat-up from her anyways.

And yes, part of me wants that new villain to be a female character as it's been forever since Mario games has had one and I am very much aware of how people would go crazy over it for the shipping.

(Also going back to Bowser, it’s more of a “me” thing but I always found it slightly weird to see Bowser attack Peach, since he’s supposed to be in love with her (Paper Mario games prove it well) and in all the games she gets captured, there are no indications he ever raises a hand on her. Hell in Odyssey he’s very gentle when putting Tiara on Peach’s head. Also Peach is never particularly afraid of him despite how horrible he can be, which implies he doesn’t physically hurt her.

Fun fact : this is why I headcanon Super Princess Peach as taking place very soon after Super Paper Mario, since the two of them would have just spent weeks working together and getting along. So it would work for Bowser to lose his shit upon getting rejected yet again “despite doing everything right” and thus be willing to fight her. As for 3d World, there’s three other people Bowser can focus on to avoid hurting her)

Ok so first, incorporation: It's incredible. At first glance, some might say this is just Hel aesthetic slapped onto Takumi's outfit. But look at everything overall: The choice of ombre for his torso, the headpiece at the crown of his head, the flared up collar... And I want you to look at the best design choice for the whole thing, the one that really makes this a 10/10 piece:

You see the red flowers at the base of those red ribbon tassels?

Those are RED SPIDER LILIES.

Spider lilies symbolize death and general bad luck.

How beautiful and tragic is it to choose THAT to incorporate into Takumi's Resplendent design? It's probably the most unique touch I've ever seen for a Resplendent design.

The art itself is also fantastic, great posing and the shading is really dramatic, though the expressions could be pushed a little more. I get Takumi is also a stern character, but the facial expressions still need to be more... well, expressive. Still great art though.

Do I even need to say that Hel is fitting for Takumi? Of course it is. Can't think of any other realm for him.

I'm definitely putting Resplendent Takumi at a 10/10. This is one beautiful Resplendent with a lot of great color choices that all blend together without clashing, and a great design overall.
