Typing about Comic Books While I Wait for Water to Boil Dept.:

My favorite computer game I played so far this year has been Perfect Tides from Octopus Pie’s Meredith Gran-- there’s a Kickstarter for a sequel going on. It’s sort of like how after Red Dead Redemption, people still didn’t feel fully redeemed so they made Red Dead Redemption 2-- except in Perfect Tides 2, hopefully your character doesn’t get tuberculosis.  Fingers crossed, anyways.  Anyways, if you’re looking for stuff to get, please don’t get tuberculosis, it’s overrated, support local Kickstarters instead...

Michel Fiffe noted on Twitter his belief that Jim Aparo would’ve been 90 yesterday, had he not passed away in 2005 at the age of 72.  But what Fiffe is ignoring is that if Jim Aparo had lived, I’d have caught up with him in a Kansas City train station bathroom before he was at the 80 at the latest.  I’d have shot him in the back, before he knew he had to reach for his gun.  Does that make me a coward?  No.  It makes me a survivor.  Jim Aparo should’ve killed me first... 

Fun review of some JH Williams thing that sounds like a visual show off-piece/slog.  I never really like the kind of comic he’s describing, anyways.  TCJ is also writing a lot lately about Nick Drnaso-- that stuff... makes me feel bad... for its audience?  Like-- have you considered pleasure??? 

If you’re interested in reading about the comics, Chad Nevett wrote the first draft of a book about Jack Kirby a few days back, to raise money for charity.  I’ve read the first 3-4 chapters-- there’s just something really enjoyable for me about hearing about a certain kind of old comic that I haven’t read (I never read Kirby’s Thor even though I like that guy a whole bunch)-- hearing it described. It’s probably an old man thing to just enjoy imagining stuff you haven’t experienced, instead of just clicking it up, though...

Brian Hibbs is still writing about how things are lately with comics retail. That article had a comment I enjoyed: “I’ve been saying for 30+ years (since I was a retailer, in fact) that the US comics business is unsupportable.“  I think around year 23, I’d reconsider my hypotheses, but I admire the stick-to-it-edness.  (And I say this affectionately for that comment because i entirely agree-- I don’t get it either!!!! We only have to be right once though!!!!).

I don’t think I marked the occasion but Wano finally ended in One Piece.  A staggering quantity of comics, though ... I just don’t think it was one of the “good arcs.”  It’s just too much and the good parts (which aren’t inconsiderable) get lost in the frightening volume of that stretch.  I think having read it all recently hurt though because that much better ending to Dressrosa is still fresh in my memory (let alone the REALLY good stuff, Enies Lobby and Marineford and what have you).

Oh, speaking of comics, George Kambadais has been doing a lot of Flash covers for DC lately if you haven’t seen those.  How Marvel hasn’t begged that guy to do a Spiderman comic yet remains to me the comic industry’s second biggest mystery.  The biggest mystery-- a lot of people think it’s “why did Stan Lee fake his own death”, but personally, I think it’s “If Stan Lee is roaming Middle America after sundown like some kind of chupacabra, as we all know is happening, then who the FUCK is buried in his grave, you guys????” I don’t know why no one else is asking that question... The lonely life of being a comic book contrarian... :(

Hello, I don't know if you remember me, but I'm the anon that once commented here on A Noble Predicament. I'm still scared of commenting on fanfiction.net so here I am again! This time I want to appreciate the Tea Time of yours! I am IN LOVE with that fic! GRAN GRAN YOU HOLY CREATURE THAT UNDERSTANDS KATAANG. I have read many fics with her, but she always felt kinda off and out of the character that was portrayed in the show. Your Kanna although was amazing! Sweet and understanding, just like in the show. She knows Katara well and always puts the needs of her family first - we can see where Katara has learned that. I really like reading talks like that and it was so beautifully handled by you! So once again I'm trying to tell you that you're one of my favorite fanfic writers and every time you drop something new I'm head over heels for that! Thanks for your work in the fandom! I wish I could say more about your work, but I'm literally speechless (and a bit sick so sorry for the lack of eloquence)

ANON!!! HOW could I possibly forget you?? You were the very first person to ever come anonymously into my inbox with kind words for my fics and I will treasure you forever for that alone. I am so, so glad you enjoyed Tea Time!! Truly, I had so much fun writing that, too. It is part of a larger (explicit) series on ao3, but I felt it needed a good segue into the next part (which isn't written yet, heh) with some fond, encouraging Katara and Kanna content, AND that it could stand on its own outside the series.

I feel like canon Kanna could have probably gone either way (she was rather wary of Aang at first--"Don't put all your hopes in this boy"--before she found out he was the Avatar and then fully encouraged Katara and Sokka to go after him). She could have supported progressing their relationship (like she did in my fic) or she could have warned them to be careful and been more stern and maybe even a little more puritanical about it (I don't think that would be culturally accurate, though). BUT given her own history (running away from the North Pole and her engagement to Pakku), I decided to lean into encouraging and empowering Katara to make her own decisions about her body and what she was or was not ready for.

And you are so right that she knows Katara well. She would be more observant than Hakoda or Sokka might be in terms of Katara's feelings, and she would absolutely understand feeling stifled at home, and maybe needing a push in the right direction so that she isn't JUST putting others' needs before her own. Katara will never turn her back on people who need her, but she also isn't a martyr. She will stand up for herself when she needs to, but at that age and stage it is hard to differentiate your wants from your needs, in terms of... everything they were discussing... haha.

I'm so sorry you're feeling under the weather, anon, and I hope you feel better soon! I just want you to know that your asks absolutely make my entire day, and I truly appreciate and thank you for them!! I am sending you lots of virtual hugs and tea and soup <3

What is your opinion on gran torinos whack ass line where he says sometimes saving means k wording people? This the argument hero stans use the most about how their logic about the big tree villains need to be put down

Ohhhhh man I’ve voiced my distaste for Gran Torino and THAT LINE many times and it is not positive lol.

My bottom line on Gran Torino and that line is:

It makes zero sense for this coming of age story—where the kids are sooooo painfully and obviously surpassing the adult generation in the most blatant way (I.e. child soldiers says it all tbh)—to end with the moral of the story being:

You know what? The 70+ year old man was right, actually. Everything we teenagers have learned along the way was just new-age bullshit and all these adults who abandon their families and beat their kids, and the adults who support them, were actually right! Sorry about that! We’ll be going now!

Like….that is just, unsubstantiated in every way possible within the terms of this manga.

To me it read more like: I hear you, but I’ll prove you wrong.

Because again: kids’ thinking = good/ adults’ thinking = bad. That’s the entire basis of the manga, so I really don’t see the manga ending with GT being right after being shown to be wrong so many times already. Not likely.

And the accepting of the cape to me read as a “thank you for everything you’ve taught me, but I’ve got it from here.” Which, honestly that seems to be holding up in the current events of the story. We’re not shown Midoriya reminiscing about Gran Torino and the meaning behind the cape or anything, nor is he thinking back on GT’s words. Whereas he does keep thinking back on Shigaraki’s words, his own words of wanting to save him, and Ochacko’s words about Toga 🤔 . So yeah.

I actually cannot stand Gran Torino lolol but he’s necessary for the story’s themes I guess 🙄🙄🙄 but I can’t wait for him to eat shit later when Shigaraki is the one who (most likely) ends AFO when GT, Nana, and AM couldn’t even do it for like 50+ years. Lol.

BnHA Chapter 294: A Half-Assed Escape

Previously on BnHA: Mirio was all “SURPRISE I’M BACK THANKS TO OUR RESIDENT SEVEN-YEAR-OLD WHO RECENTLY EARNED HER BACHELOR’S OF BEING A TOTAL BADASS.” Kacchan was all, “you know what, Dabi’s been trending long enough, time to remind the fandom what a real G looks like,” and he blasted his little bleeding body back into the fray and was all “FROM HERE ON OUT CALL ME DYNAMIGHT!!” Mirio was all, “AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... oh, you’re serious,” and Kacchan was all “!!”, and so that’s the story of how my son got murdered twice in one day. Meanwhile in the Todoroki Drama Zone, Deku was all “STOP MURDERING MY FRIEND” and Dabi was all “THAT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS” and fandom had a whole big debate about Whether Or Not Dabi Trying To Murder Deku’s Friends And Mentors Is Any Of Deku’s Business, which went exactly how you think it went. Anyway, so then Deku yelled at Dabi, and Endeavor was all moved by his manly words and randomly went to go uppercut Machia in the chin. And, seeing as how the Momoserum finally chose that exact moment to kick in, Machia is now down for the count.

Today on BnHA: The Miriosquad handles the Nearly High End Noumus, freeing up Jeanist to jasphyxiate (okay that one doesn’t really work so well) the rest of the League. Compress is all “TIME FOR THIS MILD-MANNERED SIDE CHARACTER VILLAIN TO SHINE”, except that by “shine” what he actually means is “use his quirk to punch a literal hole right through his own ass to free himself.” The rest of the chapter is basically just a back and forth between him and Jeanist, with Jeanist trying to recapture him, and Compress repeatedly thwarting him by chopping more holes out of himself because HE’S FRESH OUT OF FUCKS, AND THE ONES AT THE STORE ARE ALL SOLD OUT, MOTHERFUCKERS. Anyway, so with Compress basically dying and all, Horikoshi is all “you know what that means”, and delivers a freshly-baked villain flashback revealing that Compress is a descendant of Harima Ouji, a.k.a. the Peerless Thief, a.k.a. some famous guy whom Gentle mentioned this one time for like two seconds back in the day. The chapter ends with Compress finally demasking himself and dumping Tomura back onto the ground, a.k.a. The Worst Possible Place For Tomura To Be. ( •﹏•)

it’s super interesting to see different parts of the fandom predicting/arguing about which villain character has death flags/will die during the endgame. speaking very broadly:

fans who stan the villains seem certain that Shigaraki, Dabi, and Toga will survive/be saved - the ones whose suffering we’ve seen the most - but the non-trio Villains will be sacrificed one way or another

fans who like the villains well enough but are eager to see them defeated seem to think Spinner and Mr. Compress and maybe Toga will live - the least ‘evil’ members of the League

fans who are more invested in the Heroes/kids seem to think most of the Villains will be killed off, as expected of bad guys in a story about good guys defeating bad guys.

Feel like there’s something to be said about what themes, narratives, ‘lessons’ (like, the ‘moral of the story? the message intended to be conveyed? the thesis of Heroes and Villains?) different fans prioritize and sees trends in to support their expectations. very fun to navel-gaze about.

personally, I actually don’t think the League will get killed off. Horikoshi seems reluctant to kill his characters, especially the ones important to the overall story (including side plot)/have done important things/represent important things. Like, Twice is the only major Villain to die; and heck I would argue he’s the only major character yet to get killed. my opinion of course, but Nighteye was sorta an specific arc-only character; Midnight was a teacher at UA but was never involved in any main narratives; meanwhile Gran Torino got a hole to the chest and is still kicking, if stuck to a hospital bed. Plus, as we see (a lack of) with Nighteye and Midnight, their deaths haven’t been impactful to the story, haven’t had lingering consequences, haven’t motivate characters to significant actions, haven’t been brought up since - unlike Twice. So yeah, so far despite all the high-stakes intense battles and injuries that could kill, only one character has been killed off in the grand scheme of things.

the other big reason is regarding the story itself, the message that I think Horikoshi is trying to convey via this ridiculous tale of Heroes and Villains and superpowers and saving people. because HeroAca’s main argument seems to be about, yeah, saving people - but specifically, allowing them to live beyond the literal definition of the word - which means to give people sorta deliverance: second chances, forgiveness, leniency for mistakes and sins, support, etc. a new life.

we see this with Deku being given a quirk in the first chapter after years of being told he can’t have his dream; with Iida being let off the hook when he went rogue; with Bakugou growing out of being a bully to a hero; with Todoroki after letting go of his anger. We see this with Endeavor trying to find atonement; with All Might living on after losing his status and role of ‘Symbol of Peace’.

And then we don’t see this with the Villains, and delve into the consequences of that: Twice who was left without mental healthcare then got murdered by a Hero; Toga being shunned because of her quirk and then abandoned by both her family and larger society; Shigaraki being, metaphorically, punished for killing his family, not one person willing to take his hand after the massacre, no one offering ‘forgiveness’ and relieving him of his despair and guilt. Recently, we see Aoyama’s fall to rock bottom, bound and locked away, and he says himself - he wants to run away to a dark corner of the world and wait to die. These are the people who weren’t saved, who were deemed undeserving of being saved, and is now in need of saving.

Beyond the characters, though, I think HeroAca is built around this theme. We have a Hero Society that prohibits weakness and failures from its Heroes, forcing them to live up to expectations of being always strong and always perfect and always saving the day. We have a ‘justice’ system that condemns all people who have deviated from the ‘proper’ path of life - and so we got villains who are explicitly suicidal like Ending and the Trash Trio, depressed and withdrawn like La Brava and Spinner. If we follow details to their conclusions and implications, things become even darker - in the recent Chapter 341, Toga’s family has been harassed out of their home, which have been ruthlessly vandalized. That’s for having a child - a girl, still just a kid - who struggled with her quirk. The neighborhood didn’t want them there. With that stigma chasing them, it’s not hard to see villain-associated people being denied housing, jobs, opportunities - all the things that allows someone to satisfying their basic survival needs. Within Toga’s family, on the personal level, Toga is neglected and resented, before ultimately being disowned.

this theme is even applied to the core of this world - quirks. in story, they’re unique, individual powers that can significantly determine your status, treatment, role in life; how much you can control it, use it, what you can do with it, how much you employ it, can make or break crossroads in life. Going metaphorical, using the meaning of the word, quirks are personalities/individualities/idiosyncrasies - they are the characteristics of what makes someone their own self, ranging from natures to experiences to weaknesses and strengths. A unique person in the world. Yet in HeroAcaLand, perhaps drawing an exaggerated parallel to real life, those who have quirks ‘unsuitable’/‘incompatible’/‘irksome’/‘useless’ to society are just thrown away - simply put, should you deviate in anyway from the expectations others put on you, then you’ll be exiled from the group. Once you are, the outlook is bleak. unfortunate things happen. the darkness, the emptiness is immense. You no longer have a future, you no longer have a life worth living.

maybe i went a bit extreme there, but that’s the gist of it. That’s the thesis, that’s the problem to be solved, the point for salvation.

Yet I think HeroAca is also, overall, a very sympathetic story. We are supposed to feel for the characters, especially/when the Villains; we are supposed to want better things for them; we are to hope for and celebrate hope. We are to believe in second chances and built bridges; we are waiting for better changes to the world of HeroAca. the dystopia of discrimination, ostracization, abuse and tragedy needs to be destroyed, the system reformed, frowns turned upside down, replaced with shining smiles.

So a story where the ending has any of the League and most other Villains dying - the bad guy characters that are bad because of the damage and suffering enacted upon them by the world of our protagonists - that ending is a pessimistic tragedy. One might argue that the Villains are side characters, but I disagree. Each of them present a flaw within the world, adding to the larger ‘evil’ to be defeated. An antagonist who is killed ultimately because of abuse, neglect, discrimination, even plain ‘bad luck’ - that’s an injustice. That’s something to be fixed. It’s not about punishments and what they deserve based on various factors, nor about who is most worthy of help, nor, I think, even about what roles and lessons they serve for others’ convenience - it’s about saving everyone and bringing them back into the world. The current conflict with the Villains is that they don’t believe they have worthwhile futures. And so they need to be convinced to otherwise.

so yeah. I think for the story to make sense and stick to it’s guns, no one dies. even if the aftermath for them seems hard with atonement unlikely despite one’s greatest’ efforts, it’s still a life worth having. Plus ultra for being alive and having a bright future.

Why do you think Torino dismissed Toshinori's attempts to reach out to Tomura after it was revealed to him he was Shimura Tenko, Nana's grandson? I'm just curious about your thoughts about it.

This is so hard to answer. I keep drafting ‘in this essay I will’ paragraphs and then deleting them. I’m gonna bullet-point it. (There are... a lot of rhetorical questions below the read-more.)

tl;dr: Torino is taking responsibility for his mistake, because he assumes the chain of events leading to Shigaraki Tomura are connected to his and Nana’s decision to foster Kotarou.

“If you think he’s anything less than a villain, no good can come of it. No matter who his parents are, he’s still a dangerous criminal. [...] Even if you’re no longer the Symbol of Peace… All Might is still with us” (C95).

Gran Torino is old enough to have been an adult before the All Might era. He at least has a vague memory of how bad it used to be; he’s already made predictions on how worse it will get, with the League of Villains escaping (nominally) unharmed and Stain’s ideology being disseminated ALONG WITH the MLA’s. 

Forgive the ringleader? Because he’s Nana’s grandson? Because of sentiment? What do you risk sacrificing, in an attempt to salvage this relationship? Do you martyr yourself, in spite of publicly surviving All for One’s parting shot?

For better or for worse, Gran Torino already has his eye on the endgame. Someone’s going to die in order to finish this AFO/OFA fight. It won’t be Toshinori. It shouldn’t be Izuku either. It’s cold-blooded, but I think Sorahiko was prepped for a killshot the instant he calculated the ramifications of letting Shigaraki go.

What does it mean for Sorahiko, that he watched Nana give Kotarou away; that he witnessed this tragedy, even supported it (“The decision we made…” C281), because he knew that they weren’t enough to keep Kotarou safe?

What does it mean for Sorahiko, that he knew he wasn’t enough to keep Toshinori safe in Japan? Brutal, hellish, objectively abusive training montage aside - the fact is in the All Might: Rising OVA. He cannot finish the job, so he sends Toshinori to the States. 

(Nana is a mother twice-over, for a son she gave up and a son she couldn’t claim; what does this make Sorahiko?)

When Toshinori - no longer invulnerable and guilt-ridden - begins his train of thought, “I have to find Shigaraki… I’ll find him and…”

FIND HIM AND WHAT, TORINO MUST HAVE THOUGHT FRANTICALLY. FURIOUSLY. DESPAIRINGLY.

Toshinori may have been instructed to leave Kotarou alone, but he’s not responsible for this situation. He’s not responsible for fixing it. Toshinori’s done the job for forty years, and now he has a successor of his own, one he should raise right - one who’s already proven to be quite the spiritual successor of Shimura’s, too. 

Gran Torino will finish the job. He’s going to finish the job. (He is going to fail so, so bad because in the end, he was never capable of it.)

1/2) I wanted to mourn properly for both Twice and Gran Torino, but a villain apologist was upset about it, meaning you can't mourn for both and only Twice deserves a proper mourn. Seriously, what's wrong with wanting mourning for both? GT was a morally grey character and his reasons are actually very understandable (atleast for me). And he didn't deserved such a brutal death, I had the impression that Shig enjoyed killing him.

2/2) Also, Twice death was sad, but because of some fanatic villain stans (fanatics, because I know there are more reseonable stans out there, thankfully), it was really difficult to mourn for him. And whats wrong with mourning for both a villain and a hero? Goodness, I would even mourn for Dabi and Endeavor equally, maybe even at the same time! It's like those people don't understand what Horikoshi want's to tell with his story and that's sad.

People who entwined themselves as ‘villain’ or ‘hero’ stan that they tend to forget that these things aren’t all a character are and you can like both a villain and a hero equally.

We don’t mourn them because we think they’re in the right, god knows Twice wasn’t and Gran Torino, while obviously a objectively better person then Twice (still probably gonna get disagreements with that XD), wasn’t always correct either. No, we mourn them because they’re interesting characters that many people came to love (Twice more then Gran but he did have his fans.)

It’s like enjoying complex characters is lost on this fandom. They either have to be completely morally pure or a victimized villain or they’re bad characters and you’re a bad person for supporting them and mouring them.

I hope one day this fandom will learn but that hope is fleeting at best :p

fang & vanille meta/hc

an analysis on co-dependent relationships & mental illness [ note: i absolutely ship fanille, i ship fanille largely because of this meta and because i stan complicated relationships between women, but it could be triggering for those of us who have experienced toxic relationships with mentally ill people as people who are mentally ill themselves in the past. i do not mean to blame either fang or vanille for their co-dependency also. this is something so engrained in their relationship there is no true party at ‘fault’---and it’s so much more complicated than placing blame, as neither of them wants to blame the other at all, and in fact, blames themself.]

firstly. i want to define a co-dependent relationship. co-dependent relationships are relationships in which one person takes the role of a ‘caretaker’ and the other takes the role of an ‘enabler.’ the caretaker sacrifices their own needs, sense of self, morality, relationships with others, boundaries, and sense of intimacy/vulnerability-----in order to ‘people please’ the enabler. the enabler lets them sacricie and do this, letting the caretaker ride their whole sense of self on the enabler.

but the enabler, in fact, does not have to be some sort of monsterous abuser. sometimes, and definitely in the case of vanille & fang, the enabler simply does not know what to do about their partner’s co-dependent tendencies---and genuinely loves and feels they need the caretaker, despite relying on their affection and ‘caretaking’ for self-worth themself. in this definition of a co-dependent relationship, fang is the ‘caretaker’ and vanille is the ‘enabler.’

while obviously co-dependent relationships at first glance would look like an abuser (the enabler) that cruelly uses the obviously mentally ill dependent party (the caretaker), i believe 13 aims to show a more complicated&loving view on how relationships work. 

fang, is, by her own admission---not a good person, that is willing to let the world burn to keep vanille safe. but vanille herself is not the perfect innocent angel fang sees her as----she lies constantly to others, she runs away from her problems and responsibilities, she lets fang take the blame for ragnorak, she quite literally enables others, such as the 13 family and fang, to see her as weak and innocent through her lies about her own competency. she lets fang become ragnorak despite her not wanting to, and while vanille will never be directly at fault for fang’s actions (you can only control yourself), she refuses to talk to fang about anything (which is part of the reason she ran away) and when she does bring up ragnorak later in the game when fang eventaully finds her---she lets herself be soothed/cared for by fang (literally hugged as fang as she cries) instead of delving into the deeper issues of their co-dependency at play.

regardless of who you think is at fault for this largely unequal relationship, both girls blame themselves for it. fang decides that she is simply not a good person---she dives deeper within the role of caretaker, saying that she will tear down the sky for her, giving up her sense of self as her echalion shows that she really does not want to give up their friends to save vanille. vanille, on the other hand, blames herself so much for their co-dependency (shown in its ultimate stages pre-game by fang becoming ragnorak WITHOUT her, literally turning into a monster with many arms, symbolic of taking/giving), that she runs away from the relationship to what she assumes is her OWN DEATH (as she does not want to fulfill her purpose).

in showing fang’s struggle to be her own person/a good person, and vanille’s suicidality, the game shows us that often times, BOTH an enabler and a caretaker are mentally ill, and sometimes, these two parties are drawn to each other because of their mental illness and inability to take care of themselves on their own merits.

from here, i would like to discuss HOW vanille and fang entered their co-dependency, by discussing the ways people beome co-dependent.

co-dependent people often stem from emotionally immature or even abusive parents that WANT things from their children and make their children ‘serve’ their needs and expectations, and who are punished if they do not meet their lofty and often confusing and not specified or objective/normal expectations.

fang&vanille do not have any parents. its implied, at least by them, that gran pulse was kind of a paradise of love&affection. but it did have a drawback---the church (featured in the novel), which both fang&vanille were shown to be strongly against, probably due to many hunters they knew dying bc of being chosen to be l’cie.

the fal’cie are shown to be false gods---but we can also think of the fal’cie as the parents of humanity, like gods are often seen as fathers/mothers, etc. the fal’cie quite literally ask their ‘children’ to serve them---especially in the case of gran pulse where the fal’cie are worshipped---and the way their children are meant to serve them LITERALLY are not told to them in any way. they have to guess their whole lives why the fal’cie are here, and what the fal’cie want, or they will be ‘punished’ by turning into monsters.

this is a perfect metaphor for emotionally toxic parents.

we especially see, as fang & vanille come together to go AGAINST the church (that the rest of gran pulse does not and looks down at them for), that they are isolated from the rest of gran pulse and pushed into their toxic parent’s reach.

this isolation, when compounded with the fact that fang has ALWAYS cared for vanille as a ‘crybaby’, their own mental illness, and fang&vanille having the ‘toxic’ emotional figures, meant that the co-dependency was always bound to happen, no matter how equally they loved each other. (and despite their co-dependency, it’s clear that they really do love each other, just in a way that is harmful to both of them.)

but their relationship is not just co-dependent. the course of the game shows fang&vanille reuniting and growing as people. the game shows that by fang letting other people into their lives (the 13 family), they can BOTH grow out of the co-dependency. fang can start to forge other relationships and her own sense of self and morals that show that she really IS a good person deep down that cares about people other than vanille. vanille can start forging HONESTY with others, including fang, about how she feels about EVERYTHING, and learn to communicate in healthy ways that don’t involve the enabling and people-pleasing/self-sabotaging behaviors.

fang&vanille show that if there is a real, true love beneath the co-dependency, the relationship can grow and become healthy again with the help of others, and by putting in the work with ur mental illness to develop a support system of family and friends who love you.

you can’t just have one person in your life. you can’t just GIVE to one person, or just TAKE from one person. you need a balance, u need to be ur own person, and u need help from ur friends to get out of the emotionally toxic/suicide inducing mindsets your ‘parents’ gave you.

BnHA Chapter 278: MOMO IN CHARGE

Previously on BnHA: Deku and Kacchan were all “SIR, THAT’S OUR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT SENSEI” and got really ferocious and made a very passionate attempt to blow Tomura up and it was great. It basically did nothing, but it was still great. AFO was all “COME HERE LIL BRO”, and Tomura was all “silly Sensei, you can’t just take over my mind and body just like that”, and he was very confident of this despite there really being no evidence to back it up, but okay! Gran was all “time to make the fandom mad at me” and grabbed Tomura by the collar and yelled at him about Nana a bit, and then Bakugou and Endeavor made an even MORE passionate attempt to blow up Tomura, which may or may not have done some actual damage. The chapter ended with Gigantomachia battling Mt. Lady, just kinda out of the blue, which is FINE, but she had better be all right, though!

Today on BnHA: Everyone is all “WAUGHH IT’S GIGANTOMACHIA” and running around freaking out about it. The U.A. alums all kick some ass, and pretty much everyone else not from U.A. does jack fucking shit. Mt. Lady, who I plan on naming all of my future children after, does her best to stop Machia but he keeps flinging her aside. Kamui Woods is all “here I come with Midnight to put Gigantomachia to sleep!” and is PROMPTLY FUCKING MURDERED!? by Dabi because he’s a flammable tree man, and so Midnight falls all the way to the ground and is badly injured. So then she’s all “well I better call the most competent person I can think of to fix this mess” and dials up YAOYOROZU FUCKING MOMO, who proceeds to take charge LIKE THE BOSS SHE IS, and mobilizes the rest of the kids. And honestly I have more faith in them than in any of the adults at this point, so yeah, you know what? Let’s do this.

so I am possibly a bit spoiled on this chapter because I did a “top five predictions” post earlier this week, and someone replied to that yesterday on Thursday saying that they were mostly correct. I don’t know exactly how close to the mark I was though, and in any case most of the predictions were just “so-and-so shows up, probably”, so it’s not too bad. we’ll see how it goes!

ok there’s some discussion on that post about mitsuki so i thought i’d just expand on my general thoughts wrt her and all the other characters. because, like, i don’t actually think characters like twice, midnight, aizawa, all might, gran torino, best jeanist (god why are there so many) and SO ON really need to be “called out” or anything. i was more annoyed with the hypocrisy and comparative leniency that male characters like aizawa get when they do slapstick-y things, but if a woman makes a ~problematic~ joke that the author thinks is funny, they get blacklisted to hell and back. anyways

to be clear, i do think these actions like smacking katsuki or pulling on shinsou’s scarf fall within the realm of slapstick comedy. for all that hori can be criticized for, i think he makes it very clear when violence is supposed to matter and when it doesn’t. whether or not violence should be played for laughs, and whether slapstick humor should exist is another discussion, and i think it’s one best reserved for discussing at the real world level, rather than isolating specific characters and deciding whether punching someone for laughs makes them an acceptable character to stan or not.

at any rate, i think hori has made it clear that he doesn’t think aizawa or best jeanist are bullying the students. i think he’s also been fairly clear that he doesn’t intend for that scene in the bakugou household to be read as abuse. and i, personally, am completely fine with accepting this, because once you start going down the rabbit hole of ‘who has done something they need to be called out for?’ you end up with... jirou punching sero out. katsuki shocking kaminari into his whey~ state. all the boys and teachers letting mineta do whatever.

and to be very straight with it, i just... don’t care. i don’t care about scrutinizing every character when they do something for ~comedy.~ aside from mineta, whose entire actual character revolves around harassing the girls, it has no bearing on their normal portrayal. no one continues to express real worry that aizawa is going to hit them or even that midnight is going to be inappropriate. it’s neatly confined into one segment, and then the scene moves on. it’s not meant to seriously color our perception of those characters.

on the other hand, i think it’s the serious stuff which is meant to be taken at face-value that’s much more harmful. like the weird sexualization of the teenaged girls without any joking commentary, the possibly semi-autobiographical projection onto enjizz and the desperate attempts to make readers sympathize with him, the complete lack of acknowledgment towards female abuse victims, the way hori might be navigating marginalization and villainy as correlation. i would much rather talk about those things than how best jeanist was mean to katsuki.

it’s not that people aren’t allowed to be uncomfortable with these characters, to not want to see them or see support of them, etc. it’s not that these conversations aren’t important, because there is comedy that can be dangerous! transphobic and transmisogynistic gags are bad. sexual harassment gags are bad. but is all slapstick bad? or just certain kinds? i can definitely see how it can translate into irl harm, but i’m not inclined to say people have to agree with me or have to treat it as a major pressing issue.

especially since the way we deal with this convo in fandom is really unproductive. we’re picking out individual characters and individual actions to critique, when the problem with slapstick lies with the work as a whole. so why isolate each character from the context (the humor of the series overall) just to pick at specific incidents? why is listing the sins of individual fictional characters more important than just... letting the characters be and actually expanding your critique to the work as a whole?

and i accept that some people will take personal issue with things that those characters have done! esp characters like mitsuki who are particularly fraught! but at some point we’re just going to have to concede that one person’s interpretation and opinion of severity isn’t going to be everyone else’s, and we should probably try to be okay with that. in more ambiguous topics like these, there’s really not going to be an easy right or wrong answer, and the larger picture is lost when you’re trying to convince people that a specific character is Bad for doing something canon did not mean to make serious at all.
