upcoming store stuff & why we're doing a super sale

omg hiiii it's devin again, and this time i'm bringing store news

the short version: we're moving ourselves back to minnesota, and we're moving order fulfillment to a fulfillment center

wow, that's big news! maya and i are so so so excited to be closer to our minnesota friends (and also my family lol). i'm hoping to be back in northeast minneapolis, but let's be real we're probably gonna get priced out and into the suburbs

in addition to that, due to a variety of reasons i'll explain in more detail below, we're transitioning from in-house fulfillment to working with a fulfillment center (or 3pl, short for third-party logistics). we're at an awkward size that makes staffing difficult and have had issues with extended processing time. the 3pl should be set up by september, and we're working on the back end to have fulfillment centers in australia, canada, the UK, and eventually the EU. if tax authorities work with us we should have all that ready by december 2024!

to prepare for that we're doing a super sale. ash told me not to call it liquidation but she said that like 30 seconds after i hit send on the marketing email, sorry about that. items that we don't want to pay to move to the 3pl are discounted by 25-70%, with some of them priced at cost. under no circumstances will anything ever be 70% off again

how are the labor protections at the 3pl?

pretty good! we were shocked to find anything even halfway decent in the US; we went looking for a fulfillment center in the EU to handle all international fulfillment, and the one we found just so happened to have bought a US location two years ago.

they're located in ohio, pay $19/hr, and provide health insurance and 401k matching. that seemed too good to be true so we dug through employee reviews on places like glassdoor, and while there were some bad reviews those were all dated prior to when the facility was purchased by this new company. they also have a very low turnover rate which is a HUGE green flag

why are you transferring to a 3pl?

the serious

sometimes we have a high volume of sales, and it makes sense to have two full-time employees plus a part timer! but usually we have a low-to-medium volume of sales. we can float by on that, but it gets risky, and the economy is in a bad enough state that we're concerned about the longevity

related, the 2023 holiday sale showed us some major flaws in our fulfillment process. if the same issues were to happen this year the business probably wouldn't survive

we're moving cross-country in early 2025 and would've had to close this location anyway

troy was always meant to be a temporary move. initially the plan was to move to vermont or massachusetts, but after being out here for 7 years we just kinda want to go home. the weather in troy is perfect for us, we love the mountains, and we have some great friends here, but for some goddamn reason we want our eyelashes to freeze together.

will you be returning to midwest cons?

if we return to cons at all it will be with ariel and/or ash running the booth, maya will not be involved. this would likely be in california and/or in the northeast US.

Thoughts on the TRAILER for TBHK Season 2

Ngl when I 1st saw this was out I immediately was skeptical due to how much attention the spin off series was getting, but No, THIS IS the MAIN SERIES!!

Omg the New animation looks beautiful, like just Look at HIM!!, in all seriousness tho it's good to see that TBHK back and is FINALLY getting the recognition it Deserves, like it's such an underrated series and In opinion could be one of the Greatest series. Bitten by Witch Fever: Wallpaper & Arsenic in the Victorian Home - Lucinda Hawksley

Hey, did you know it wasn't just Scheele green that had arsenic in it? I didn't know until I read this book, but absolutely any color wallpaper could have poisoned you before regulations and public pressure stopped manufacturers using it. Which is super important background that might have informed my previous readings of, say, The Yellow Wallpaper! Knowing things is amazing!

If I was going to be poisoned by wallpaper, I would want it to be the second from the right on the top row of this spread:

It's giving Gail Simone's Clean Room, and I'm kind of tempted to follow my roommate's joking advice that I get a tattoo of those...magnolia? flowers.

I saw a copy of this book at Winterthur a couple of years ago and immediately knew I needed it in my life. It has prints of 275 wallpaper samples that have been identified as containing arsenic, as well as 200+ pages on the history of arsenic in manufacturing and consumer use with a focus on Victorian interior design. I was delighted to find that the text was even more interesting and engaging than the samples, and horrified to see further confirmation that we're all just running on the same hamster wheel of history. Evil and/or self-deluded fuckwads are going to keep telling us the arsenic tonic isn't poison just drink it it's good for you I promise don't listen to those damn German scientists...

This is exactly the kind of art book I want more of in my life. And I'm hoping it will inspire me to actually create some art, too.

Vicky dying still does not feel real. I feel privileged I got to spend some siginifcant time with her when she came along to Conferencia Agile Spain (like most people I primarily knew her from her writing and online presence, altho we met briefly a few times when we overlapped at GDS) and was hoping to follow up on a few things we talked about at GovCamp but equally it means I can't just indulge in my full-on denial mode...

Worked through xmas-ny break like usual. It's usually a chill time unless I am in this department, where apart from the ongoing time-sensitive work lots of random emergencies happened. So glad I'm off for a couple of weeks now, I've not had a proper break since Japan in March/April and I'm shattered.

Overall so much random and weird shit was going down at the end of Dec / start of Jan (including both me and my flatmate having very strange dreams) I was beginning to suspect a gas leak... 🙃

Got extended till Feb 2026 in my current contract. 🎉 It should make getting a mortgage easier, now just fingers crossed that the property does not get down valued like the last one and my sellers find something they want to purchase soon.

Quite a lot of change at work, lots of it quite neatly coinciding with my leave. The migration from GOV.UK PaaS my team was prepping for for the last year got delayed last minute and now I'll be missing it but I'm sure it will all go fine.

Govcamp happened and I was mostly helping our rather than going to sessions. :o Good times as usual, felt particularly busy this year for a 'normal edition'. I really like that we finally have a bit of a Teacamp return with TransformGov Talks and also sort of DataBites! \o/

Spanish classes are back. I've not signed up for Korean yet, there's probably a fair bit I can do to brush up close to my former level by myself if I just find the motivation. :s

Lots of Taskmaster, the perfect crocheting accompaniment (see below)

Nosferatu - the scene in castle 100% played like something from What We Do in the Shadows, I'm not even sorry for giggling throughout. 😔 Needed more Dafoe hamming it up. I was shocked the cat was not named in the credits - breaking a sacred tradition of cinema. 4 stars.

Presence - not a horror, not my kinda thing otherwise (family drama). The central gimmick could be fun in an actual horror movie tho. Another one they kind of employ ('not being bound by time') is sort of redundant because the progression is linear (I suppose otherwise the twist would be ruined). The marketing vs movie kind of fell in place for me when I realised it's the same distributor as Longlegs which was also underwhelming.

Late Feb / March seems staked with releases I want to see: The Monkey, The Last Showgirl, Mickey 17, Death of Unicorn... probably more. Those are just the trailers I saw before Presence lol.

Decima is still closed so no pottery. I've probably forgotten 100% of what little I could do. I'll probably do a course at Mudgang when I'm back to return to some working level and then get either a studio space subscription from them or Turning Earth near Haggerston, depending on how the flat buying is coming along.

In the meantime I have finally sort of learned how to crochet. I got a kit from TOFT to make a black and white cat, resembling Bella a bit. I tried crocheting before a few times (I learned very basic knitting during lockdown and have half a pride blanket from Wool & the Gang somewhere) but it always ended up with me crying, once in public. 🥲 The kit said it's level 2 so I got another level 1 one (labrador)

TBF they are not that different, cat requires changing colours which is actually not hard if you get over the initial barrier to entry of crocheting anything at all. 😬 The cat is also bigger which makes the process much less fiddly.

TOFT instructions are quite barebones and don't have any interim 'this is what it should look like by now' pics which as a complete beginner is quite rough, but I think I managed to make decent approximations of the cover images. I made some changes to the cat on purpose.

The biggest issue I have with TOFT kits so far is that the amount of yarn provided leaves no room for errors or even leaving longer tails. With both patterns I made mistakes (crocheting with dark yarn is particularly hard going if you don't know wtf you're doing) and the yarn started fraying real bad so I had to chop it. I actually had to buy more yarn (which doesn't exactly match...) to finish the cat at all. :(

I got yarn and patterns for two sheep (Seth and Tobias) from them to keep busy on the upcoming flights so we'll see how consistent this minimalism is. 😬

Anyway then I went crazy at John Lewis sales so I have lots of materials now, just need patterns and ideas. The first one is not going particularly well and I'm losing my patience sligtly, might swap to something else.

Overall thoughts:

Besides the stream breaking, I'm really excited for this. I have Hollow Knight but got stuck on some boss a few years ago and just never got back around to it. Maybe once I get through Thousand Year Door I'll go back to it.

Very excited about GameCube games coming back, I grew up on some of those games and man that was the shit. I doubt they'd be able to port Double Dash BUT IF THEY DID. I would be a happy man. And probably not play it bc im too busy playing mario kart world.

As always I was hoping to hear some news about Splatoon 4 since we know from data mines that it's in production. And CALL ME CRAZY but I MIGHT wait until the exclusive Splatoon variant comes out before buying a Switch 2 for myself. Luckily my bf is getting one so I could always play on his switch 2 in the meantime. Think that might be my best bet.

A Year of Animation Day 69: The Dragon Prince, S5E5-9

Still can't find season 5 gifs, so we're just going to get into it.

I feel like, at this point, I've kind of talked the animation to death and I don't have a lot to say about it. But my favorite animation in these episodes is probably when the baitlings get their names (my favorite is Hat). I think it helps with the tone of the show and shows the creators were having fun with it. Also, there's a scene in "Archmage Akiyu" where Rayla tells a bad joke and then Callum fist-bumps in the background. I just really like this detail. It's super cute, and I love that animators will draw characters to upstage each other.

On an additional note about the animation, I notice that Nyx's wings are relatively low down on her back. I feel like most of the time, humaniods have wings at or near their arms. Mostly, I just think this is interesting worldbuilding, and I like that they decided to depict the wings differently than usual. Also, it arguably makes more sense because they're more centered? I'm not a physicist. I don't know.

My favorite episode is probably "Bait and Switch" for the title alone. But I also like a good heist (or a mediocre heist) and Soren brings a lot of Bolin energy to his disguise. But I also really like the baitlings, who don't really get any screen time until the following episode. And how Ezran says, "prepare to be fulfilled with a sense of awe." Then when he opens the box, everybody goes "awwwww!" Because BABIES!! The play on words is just a lot of fun. I also like that Bait can't seem to decide if he's jealous of the babies or feels protective over them (like many a cat I've known.)

I mentioned in one of the season 4 reviews that I like some of the episodes in season 5 getting room to breathe, and I think that might just be because I really like pirates? Like... I could absolutely see someone saying that the stuff with Finnegran isn't really necessary, but I had no problem with multiple episodes of pirate music and boat chanses. Not to mention we get to see Captain Villads again! I felt a little better when everyone, including Berto, stopped giving him his bearings after Finnegran's ship turned out to be a hermit crab. Not that I wanted them to crash, but clearly I'm not the only one who fails to give directions to the blind pirate when I'm surprised by what they can't see. As a side note, I like the difference between Bright Hope Cove (the real name) and Scumport, as well as Rayla's comment that "I've got no problem with spooky. Just... boat." (Okay, rewatching this season, we probably could have halved it as well and just combined with season 4. But pirates!)

In additon, I'm impressed that Bait's name comes back here. I rememered this scene when I started my re-watch, so when Ezran and Callum tell Rayla about deep-sea fisherman using glow toads as a bait, I was a little stunned. I'm always impressed when things like this, whether by accident or design, show up again seasons later, so good on them for the tight storytelling.

Finally, Akiyu is a lot of fun. I like how sassy she is, and I kind of imagine she'd get on with Amaya. Or Nimona. Especially considering the very over-dramatic fake death scene. (I love that Soren hears nutrient-rich and immdiately goes to take a taste from her vial.) But she also calls Callum "The Wizard of Awkward"? Which isn't wrong. But I love that he learns a second arcanum here, and I love what the ocean arcanum is, as well as how that applies to Finnegran and his psyche. I would be all for the Adventures of Callum as he learns all six aracna (which I suspect would commence in an epic battle between him and Aravos, who is the only other character mentioned thus far to know all six.) And Rayla's obviously proud of him, despite "now you're just showing off," comment.

I've got some other, smaller thoughts that don't really warrent paragraphs of their own:

Every time Callum shows up in the opening credits, I am filled with a sense of dread. It's a nice cue about what to expect in the episode.

The obvious ATLA reference here is the purple pentapus, which also appears in the end credits, alongside its ATLA counterpart (so cute!)

I like how ominious "blood of child" sounds, and then it turns out to be the homunculous, rather than Claudia.

WATCHED IN 2025: JANUARY

ACCUSED (Fox) - Finished S2: Still enjoying this show. I really like that every episode is a new plot with a new cast. Hopefully it gets another season but if it doesn't, it had a good run in my humble opinion.

HIGH POTENTIAL (ABC) - Watching S1: This show easily became one of my favorite shows in 2024 and is still going strong in 2025. I'm a little sad that S1 is ending soon but super happy that it was renewed for S2. Can't wait to see more of this show.

WILL TRENT (ABC) - Watching S3: Still enjoying this show in S3, I'm really liking the addition of Gina Rodriguez to the cast so far and the new dynamic between Faith and Ormewood is really cute.

THE ROOKIE (ABC) - Watching S7: I'm not gonna lie, this season has been kinda slow in my opinion. Nothing has really caught my interest yet and it feels like nothing is really happening (even though a lot is happening). We got a few teases of what's to come but nothing really mind blowing so far (except for a few predictions that I have that might not come true in the end so I'm gonna keep them to myself). Still enjoying the show, I'm gonna keep watching the rest of the season and really hope we get through all this setup soon and that it pays off in the end.

WILD CARDS (CBC/CW) - Watching S2: I'm so happy Max and Ellis are back on my screen! I really missed them. Just like High Potential, this show easily became a fave in 2024 and is still going strong for me in 2025. And to my fellow High Potential fans reading this: Watch Wild Cards! You won't regret it, I promise.

SCHOOL SPIRITS (Paramount+) - S1 + Watching S2: I binged S1 in one day, I don't know what that says about me or about the show but I really enjoyed S1. We're only 3 episodes into S2 so far but I think it might be my favorite of the two...? I'm so invested in S2 right now and I will definitely gonna keep watching it (also the music in this show is 👩‍🍳💋).

VAGRANT QUEEN (2020, SYFY) - S1: I found this show one random day in January because I was bored and the weather wasn't helping (it was also streaming for free) so I watched it and it entertained me for a while. That's it, that's all I have to say about it.

DECEITFUL LOVE (2024, Netflix): Another show that I randomly found one day because I was bored and I watched it all in one sitting (it's only six episodes sooo 🤷🏻‍♀️). Listen! Did I only watch this show because the guy from Wild Cards is in it and because is set in Italy? Yes, absolutely. But I liked it, it keep me entertained. And it's on Netflix sooo 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s looking like the strike is gonna last the rest of 2023 I don’t see how they would already have a set date in December for OBX 4 to get back to filming when the strike is still going on but even if OBX doesn’t start filming again until like January or February 2024 we would still get season 4 in 2024 it would just be almost at the very end of the year 😭 but if the strike is still going on past jan and Feb we definitely ain’t getting it until early 2025 it’s just so sad that we finally get jiara but have to wait even longer to truly see them as a couple like we didn’t even get any mtv best kiss award content no madison and rudy bloopers from season 3 and no press with them it just feels like we lose more than we are winning idk I just miss them and OBX so I’m just sad and everything negative is just getting to me :(

I think it's more about setting a date with the hope that things will be sorted by then? Idk anon, but i'm trying to stay positive. Like, this is so much bigger than just obx for starters, and also i've just sorta accepted that we're in it for the long haul at this point, so whenever they get back to shooting, we're gonna get stuff. Also I've stopped expecting Maddie and Rudy content tbh and it's been so much better since. Like, to me, we absolutely didn't lose with the MTV win, jiara won??? this small ship that sailed because everyone saw the undeniable chemistry became canon and then won best kiss? Also the cannoli memes born out of that s,knkdlvndlsvc that's a win to me :') As for the bloopers, well, it is what it is. I can't wait for jiara to be back on set tho! <3

and now it begins... the TRUE ddr spree of today's session ! eating that meal was the best decision i could've possibly made, as i proceeded to get 15 PFC #18 on the second qualifier song of the tourney, Teleportation [ESP-15]!! and then immediately following after that, when i couldn't find a specific suggestion and had no idea what else to play, i went straight to Scarlet Police on Ghetto Patrol [CSP-18] and was kinda having a bad run... but at the end, somehow, despite my terrible misses and MA... i GOT IT!!! 18 AAA #1 ON SCARLET POLICE!!!! IT'S OVERRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The situation is pretty dire. Waiting on UC with all it's motions and useless repetitive appointments to sort out. Not sure if I can cope work here tho. Not in this state.

Home means hiding, lest I destroy what little relationship I have with my father. It may end with me being in the same situation back home, but if I bite my tongue, and tuck tail within a year I could fund and build a Van and try again.

Let's be honest, when I left home two years ago, I wasn't prepared for it. Still hadn't even had a national insurance number. And now here we are, no bike, no van, no money.

On the plus side, selling my soul for another year wouldn't be that bad a price to pay to solve my issues and get fully self sufficient. A year of monitored HRT, Medical script, MONEY, who knows maybe maybe, but then the flow and hope of aerials gets put on hold.

Tough choices but first lets see what the options are here...
