Activities

Find an area covered in snow and, using your finger or a stick, write a wish in the snow. Watch the open spaces fill back in as the snow falls, and imagine your wish is being carried out by the universe.

Activities

When you  hear hail, close your eyes and focus your energy on something you've been avoiding. Using the energy of the hail, write out a plan to tackle the problem at hand. When the hail ends, you will have gained the strength you need to carry out these tasks - don't be afraid to ask for help from others if necessary!

Activities

Count the seconds between lightning and thunder as the storm approaches. When the storm is at its peak (there's no delay between the lightning and thunder), focus on your current magical workings. Feel your energy pour into the storm as the storm fills you with strength and power. Imagine the storm continue to pour strength into you and your magical workings as it fades away.

Activities

Take a yellow, orange, or red stone and let it charge under the sun for a few hours on a hot day (be sure to double-check that your stone/crystal is sun-safe). Place the stone on your altar, desk, or area of your preference. Pull out the stone and call on its energy when you need a boost of strength or endurance.

Buck Moon - July 3, 2023

Put on your flower crowns and your dancing shoes, it's time for the Buck Moon!

Buck Moon

The Buck Moon is the name given to the full moon in the month of July and is called this because at this time of year, the antlers on male deer are at the height of growth and impressiveness. This month also marks the first supermoon of the year!

Other European names for the July moon include Hay Moon and Wort Moon. North American Indigenous names for this moon include Salmon Moon (Tlingit), Berry Moon (Anishinaabe), Month of the Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Raspberry Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe).

The West Abenaki also call this the Thunder Moon in reference to the often-stormy summer weather. (This one is my personal favorite and the name appears in lunar calendars just as often as the Buck Moon.)

What Does It Mean For Witches?

The July full moon continues June's template of planning for the future, this time with a focus on your passions and ambitions. Reflect on what you've accomplished so far this year and plan your next step.

Dream big and plan big, but don't give in to reckless urgency. Summer (and capitalist grind culture) gives us the urge to Go Go Go. Despite all this, it's important to take time to rest and recharge, lest we find ourselves burning out and losing our motivation.

What Witchy Things Can We Do?

Celebrate your victories and revel in the abundance of the summer season. If you're inclined to do so, take a page from the deer and do a bit of prancing around a bonfire or your favorite flower arbor with some festive flowery headgear.

Go exploring! Find a local park or garden and take a stroll among the greenery, or use TV and the internet to explore and learn about faraway places. This is another opportune time to go and check out pick-your-own farms and farmers markets as well. Sharpen your foraging and plant identification skills while you're out and about!

If you're tending a garden, harvest some herbs and investigate what you can make with them. Whether it's seasoning for meals, homemade botanical products, or just helpful spell ingredients, many herbs and flowers have a plethora of uses. As an exercise, select three plants growing in your garden, research their magical correspondences and botanical properties, and try to think of as many ways as possible to use each one for witchcraft and for practical purposes.

(Safety Note: Always clean and prepare home-harvested herbs properly before using them for kitchen, bath, or medical preparations. Always consult a doctor before trying an herbal treatment and take all allergies, medications, and pre-existing conditions into account. Please also note that while herbal treatments can be helpful, it can have negative interactions and side effects just like any other medication, and it is not meant to be a replacement for modern medical care.)

Apart from the usual full-moon festivities, I've always found this is an excellent time for weather-witching. Summer weather is notoriously fickle, but it is also highly malleable - one recalls that old American Southern epithet of, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes."

If you're hoping to bring some rain to water your garden or break the back of a heat wave, this may be the time to do it. My personal favorite folk magic ritual for rain-calling involves going outside with a broom and a bucket of water, using the broom to scatter drops of water over your yard, and shouting up to the clouds, "SEE? IT'S NOT HARD!"

Make sure you take local weather patterns into account and try to draw on existing fronts and nearby precipitation to get the desired result. And keep in mind that with weather magic, less is more and one casting is enough. Asking for too much or asking too often can produce undesirable results. And if you manage to make it rain, be sure to collect some for moon water!

Various Uses for Fossils in Magic from Wisht Waters by Gemma Gary

"Sea fossils, as well a guarding against drowning, had other protective uses. The fossils of sea urchins, or Echinoids, were employed for a variety of protections. Upon these fossils, one might find a star-like pattern, very reminiscent of the 'daisy-wheels', which one might find inscribed into the timbers and masonry of ancient buildings, most likely for apotropaic purposes. Their folk names include shepherd's crowns, thunder stones and fairy loaves. They protected against thunder, evil spirits and witches, prevented milk turning sour, and in common with other fossil amulets, they sweated in the presence of poison. As 'fairy loaves' they might be used to ward off supernatural interference from the baking process, and to ensure an abundance of bread."

".... The young shipmaster known as Skipper Perkins is about to set sail from Kittery with his fishing crew. Old Betty Booker, a known witch from the town, asks him to bring her back some halibut. He laughs at her and chastises her for begging, so she promises to take her revenge. Sure enough, old Betty Booker scratches her way into his house one stormy night, strips him naked and bridles him, then rides him ragged through the wind and rain down to York Harbor and back before sunrise. In the end, Skipper Perkins “more dead than alive” has learned to be kinder to his neighbors. But before old Betty Booker bridled the shipmaster, she had performed a feat of weather magic: she had summoned a storm, which had battered his ship, ripped his sails, driven away the fish, and made his men sick. Her use of weather magic endangered the safety and livelihoods of these sailors. As striking as this story is, what surprised me most was not its peculiarity but rather how commonplace it is among the region’s tales. The coast of New England is teaming with folk stories of witches summoning storms or holding the wind hostage, of wicked men buying wind from the sea, and of Finnish wizards selling their skills for shaping the waves and weather. The motifs encapsulated in these tales and their presence in English, Scottish, and Irish stories tell us about their history. Europeans brought these stories with them when they made new homes here, but New England was not the only region inhabited by people from those countries. What factors made weather magic stories so prominent in New England? ...."

Let’s talk about working with the Water Element; divination, magical waters, workings and cultivating a relationship with it and its spirits.

How do I grow my relationship with Water itself?

Begin opening yourself up to it more and incorporating it into your daily life. When I began building my relationship with it this is what I did:

To be done over a months period

Washed my hands & face with cold water when waking up and letting them air dry as much as possible.

Brushing out my hair and braiding it, picturing my hair flowing like a river with every movement of my fingers.

Beginning my day by intentionally drinking a glass of water, sitting down to really appreciate it and how it aides your body. I like cold water because you can easier feel it flow through you, I also like charging it beforehand.

Visit as many water sources as possible during this period. I am lucky enough to live by the pacific ocean and I would go and swim in it everyday to cultivate my relationship. However, if that is inaccessible for you there’s options such as sitting by a public pool, taking a bath, standing in the rain, eating your lunch by a river, etc.

While you’re spending time with water just talk to it. Tell it stories, sing it songs, ask it questions, water is living and it longs for a connection.

Record your progress throughout the month either in written journal entries, scrapbooking, or digital trackers. Just have a way for you to look back at how you’ve changed during this period.

What can I benefit from working with water?

Regardless on where you are from, what path of life you are following or anything else we are connected by our need for water. It is not only our connection to other humans but our connection to the natural world as well. It makes up 3/4 of our planet and 60% of your body. You can get a better understanding of yourself just by going back to that fundamental need to sustain yourself with water as a life-force. The element itself is well known to be a very introspective force and most spirits representing or associated are similar (spg). When you are inviting it into your home you are inviting that connection and energy in too.

Water takes life without discrimination, just as it gives life. Working within that provides a confidence and at least in my experience a sense of balance within ones self. If you are feeling like you are being tossed by the path of life, as if you are a lone ship at a storming sea, this might be your sign to stop fighting the current and start moving with it. If you can make the waves move at your asking then what is there to stop you.

Hydromancy

hy·dro·man·cy /ˈhīdrəˌmansē/

divination by means of signs derived from the appearance of water and its movement.

Some argue this is the first form of scrying Hydromancy is a very useful tool. It can be done with natural bodies of water, or things like tubs, cups and bowls. It can be frustrating to begin so this is how I would begin if I were you: (works better with an established connection to water)

Go somewhere quiet and still, I prefer outside at night but do what is safe and comfortable for you.

Prepare your space and yourself however you normally would set the tone for a divination reading. Some choose to say a blessing prayer, drink a divination tea blend, or anoint themselves with particular salve or oil. I will usually ritually prepare myself (let me know if you want me to go more into this).

In a shallow dark colored bowl (or scrying bowl), pour your preferred water of choice. I usually go with waning moon water.

Relax and begin to gaze into the water. Let yourself open up to messages. Sometimes it comes as scenes of images, or a shape or even words that can come through.

Write down anything you receive to interpret later on.

If you are struggling try this ritual but use the light of a candle or the moon to interpret those shapes. Or meditate with the bowl and pour it out onto the ground and scry the shape it leaves behind.

Do you have a good spell to summon rain?

The forecast has been teasing rain for weeks but keeps underdelivering.

Tbh, it's the same where I am. I've been tempted to go out into the yard with a broom and a bucket. There's an old folk magic spell that calls for flinging water from a bucket over your yard with the bristles of a broom and yelling up at the clouds, "SEE? IT'S NOT HARD!"

(Not the literal incantation, but a rough translation from the original language. It's been a long time since I read the source where I got the idea, but I feel like it was Italian or Polish maybe? Not sure. If I find it later, I'll update the post.)

There are storm systems nearby, they're just not passing over my area. What I'm probably going to do if it doesn't rain by this evening is take my jar of storm water from the June moon and scatter it over my yard with one of my asperging bundles, then call up to the clouds, "Okay, your turn!"

Weather magic is one of the few areas where my witchcraft actually intersects with my paganism since two of my patrons are storm gods. I've also been beseeching Lugh and Thor all morning like, "Come on guys, it's gonna be the perfect night for a friendly joust, let's throw some spears and hammers and shake the rain loose of the clouds, how bout it?" I'll probably be putting out some whiskey as an offering / gentle bribe when I get home too.

That reminds me, I keep meaning to lay down a permanent working / summoning circle in my backyard. I should really get around to that but it's just been too hot for yardwork lately.
