☔Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?

Oh God. Plenty, but maybe the one who is least likely to be written is the. I don’t even know how say this. Voltaire’s 1759 best-seller Candide, or the Optimist but it’s Maglor. Maglor, or The Optimist. 

Maybe being harassed out of the shoreline, being forcibly concripted, terrified by the sea, drowned and undrowned, visiting El Dorado/Númenor and coming to grips with the long toil of growing one’s own garden could fix Maglor?

Certainly someone clinging desperately at the threads of his own tragedy would have a fun and much necessary breakdown of paradigm in the face of Voltairish absurdity.

I am not a Voltaire expert by far, but from what I remember, I think it could be an interesting experiment. Candide has so much sharp, biting, cruelly honest humour, struggles so pointedly with what it means to survive the unsurvivable and how absurd survival itself is, makes a farce out of tragedy and discusses philosophy as a desperately important thing, makes grappling with great questions not just a side-plot but the plot itself.

All the character’s lamentation are full of rage, and despair, and grief, but they are ironical as well, because the thesis of the book is that irony/perspective/laughter amid tears, more than cleverness or even pity, is in itself the only possible wisdom in the face of one’s own smallness.

The only way to withstand life is to focus on creating community and nurturing the ability to grow.

There's something interesting about how the way Voltaire deals with the idea of God's determinism/Misfortune and Tolkien's own approach to narrative gravity and Narrative-as-Theme that could be interesting to work with, but I've lost the spark for it meanwhile.

I wanted to make it actual Voltaire-pastiche, too, which is insane. Looking at the chaotic bulletpoint list to answer this ask, and there was a crab? It was like Pangloss, but a crab. That’s how much I don’t write OCs, I made Pangloss a crab, maybe a crab Maia at most.

Objectively this is a very weird idea, and at most I’d manage a thousand words instead of the sprawling novella-length idea that lived briefly in my mind for half a week months ago.

But so many of Candide’s lines suit the Problem of Maglor, and I do think something interesting could be done out of it. Also, I was going to shamelessly quote some of Voltaire’s lines, because it just suits too well: 

“I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our more stupid melancholy propensities, for is there anything more stupid than to be eager to go on carrying a burden which one would gladly throw away, to loathe one’s very being and yet to hold it fast, to fondle the snake that devours us until it has eaten our hearts away?”
