i have a bit of a hot take: "you have to read novels to improve your writing" is technically, literally true insofar as you're talking about, like, prose structure and style. however, if you're already satisfied with your prose itself, i do not think that's true and i think prose writing sincerely benefits from a multidisciplinary approach that one might get from studying writing across art forms other than novels.
comics, film, television, video games, web-based unfiction like ARGs, concept albums, and pretty much any other narrative art i can't think of right now--they're all fertile ground for developing your understanding of character work, framing, pacing, establishing symbolism and other motifs, setting work, pretty much everything i would consider the fundamental building blocks of narrative fiction. you can learn just as much from picking apart the narrative structure and choices in your favorite manga as you can from doing the same with your favorite novel.
more than that, i think taking a multidisciplinary approach to studying fiction can result in better, more interesting novels--breaking away from your medium of choice allows you to think about art using different lenses entirely and examine your own medium in new ways. studying a TV show could give you insight into how serial, episodic writing differs structurally from trad published novels, and could allow you to take a fresh structural approach on writing a series of novels. studying a comic might cause you to think about your choices of visuals and visual framing, and to be intentional about your "directorial style" in-text as much as you are intentional about your prose style. et cetera and so on and so forth!
i do appreciate where the sentiment "you have to read novels to improve your own writing" is coming from--i mean, for one thing, i agree that the best art tends to come from a genuine enthusiasm for the medium you're working in--but quite frankly, narrative fiction is narrative fiction. we're all working with the same basic toolkit, there's just different ways to use those tools based on medium.
full disclosure: i, as an author, am not a huge reader of novels. i get through 2-4 novels a year, on average. i am, however, a voracious enthusiast of multimedia web-based fiction, comics, animation, and television, and i do the vast bulk of my artistic criticism and analysis in those mediums. i do study prose through the novels i read, but on the whole, even my prose improvement tends to come from studying poetry (something that is painfully obvious in my writing at times, and is not to everyone's taste). don't get me wrong--i am not saying i produce outstanding quality work that should be compared to that of lifelong professionals or anything, but my writing is generally acceptable, and i continue to make marked improvements over time--because my course of study is intentional, regardless of medium.
tl;dr: narrative is narrative, if you set out with the intention to understand what makes a narrative tick, it doesn't matter what medium you're studying, you're still learning.

DEV04 - Pican'te (trowel pico thoughts)
almost a year ago, amidst bbsprint development and trowel development i have decided to ask my small playerbase about the editor's fate and settled on further expanding the scope of the game's demo and allow people to make their own levels while they wait for the full versions. this would be done through something called "trowel pico", which is a version that is intentionally much more limited than the regular trowel, and is web-based for maximum compatibility (because trowel is a windows app that could probably be compiled to linux and macOS)

the route that leads to me developing trowel pico is a route that would amplify the game's deliverable and development time in general because i would need to juggle some things as well as 2 versions of a program to achieve the same thing with different targets in mind. i however believe it's gonna be worth it.
as it stands right now, trowel pico itself is about 80% feature complete, now reaching feature parity with trowel desktop in many aspects and able to generate a project file (yes, now they export project files by default instead of just the stage) that is cross-compatible with trowel desktop (except you can't load in stages from trowel desktop because i have intentionally added a guard to prevent using stages generated with desktop for the future)
i find that i am making some gui compromises compared to trowel desktop in favor of development speed, but i can't really stop myself from polishing the gui a little bit more adding things i've always wanted to add to a game/editor for game (read: startup screens) and as such, i have reached a milestone by finally being able to implement the startup splash artwork i made a few months ago as well as the startup jingle i made like 2 days ago
have a video.
i do not quite have a release date, because although trowel pico is 80% complete, Scaffold (the online service hosting and serving stage info for the update's plans) still needs to be made and that is its own beast, but at least, i do not have to worry as much about a wildly customizable gui for that one, the bulk of the development there is backend.
i'm thinking of letting people in my server try out trowel pico before anybody else while scaffold is being developed.
now, there's one question i left for last intentionally one may wonder "why did you make these separate projects instead of implementing them in the game itself?"
the reason is that i wanted to challenge myself by making things for one common goal in different toolkits, that's how trowel desktop started, since it's made in monogame
second i wanted to update the editor irrespective of the game, and third, which is trowel pico's reason for existing, is that doing things in web is terrible as it is

modern gui development...
this is a bit of an opinion post, so please keep that in mind :3
so, i logged back into twitter to see what i had missed (i don't post anything there anymore, and the times i do, it's just to link my tumblr x3), and i saw that the epic games launcher was an unreal engine application... the fact that somebody thought that was a good idea scares me, especially since electron is right there.
anyways, it got me thinking about how unnecessarily bloated and inefficient all of these cross-platform, non-native solutions were. chromium embedded framework is just chromium, but now there's no tabs. electron is just cef, but it's now bundled with a node.js runtime. these are all full copies of chromium modified to not let you use tabs, the core of them remains unmodified. this means that a bunch of rendering cruft is left behind, making them have to do unnecessary checks in the parser and renderer (nobody uses the marquee tag anymore, especially professionally made applications, and yet there's still support for it in chrome).
there's a lot of legacy cruft which is necessary for a browser, but not for a native application. these repackaged web apps were already inefficient since they were basically being put through a gigantic interpreter, but the interpreter itself is also very inefficient, which ends up in apps absolutely choking on older devices ("just upgrade", try telling that to the 14-year-old in a poor neighborhood in colombia that wants to run discord so that he can learn how to write mods for his pirated copy of gta san andreas that runs on a secondhand core 2 duo laptop he got from his parents after they upgraded to a first gen core i3 laptop. yes, i know this person irl, they're one of my cousins).
while i personally believe that you should do your best to make native applications instead of these webapp repackages, i understand why they're done (to put it short: capitalism). i just think that these projects should put more effort into making them less resource intensive. the rendering engine should be paired down to only support html5, v8 should be replaced with ruby and all javascript should be transpiled into ruby (javascript is not a good language for any of this anyway).
i consider this more of a temporary fix rather than the actual solution. the actual solution would be to make a good gui toolkit that is cross-platform, but also manages to look good and doesn't make it so that your computer has a heart attack every single time you run any application that uses it. however, that is very difficult, especially when windows is involved (win32 murders any and all codebases that touch it). while i plan to fix the issues the linux gui space has with pltk, pltk will never get an officially supported release to windows, so it won't ever truly be cross-platform.
