Another piece of advice for girls working their way up?

Make sure that you know when you’re closing a door.

This is a something my sister said to me when I left for England. I didn’t really understand it, at the time; I thought that it meant something along the lines of make the most of your time at uni, don’t burn any bridges, etc. I only understood what she meant when she repeated it in variation to me, a little while later, when the protests back home were growing larger and Ukraine looked to be on the brink of war, and I phoned her in tears.

The that in question was dating someone I didn’t like, because he’d promised to help me stay at university if my scholarships were withdrawn. If I’d have closed that door by not opting to take Logic, it would have been no skin off my nose.

A very rough first draft of a hungry AI

Within the walls of the C.H.O.A.M. Synthetics Research Laboratories, researchers worked around the clock to create the first silicone mind. They had first succeeded in the year 2034, with an AI named Hal. Hal was programmed to alk and argue. It was shut down a month after first booting since it argued, quite well, that the researchers deserved a raise. Since then, C.H.O.A.M. had ordered that the researchers program the intelligences to feel rather than think. 

The next success was in 2036, when a researcher ran the code of Hal through a program they called a generative code sequencer. The AI that came out the other end was one that felt happiness. When researchers tried insulting it, it only replied with cheerful comments. Of course investors were excited and dumped large amounts of money into research, but on the condition they made a real feeling AI for testing purposes. And of course, the researchers compiled. 

Over the next few years, steady progress was made. The AIs felt sadness without a source of comfort. They were made angry but denied a reason to have it. They were forced to be happy within their miserable existence and expected to remain so by the executives. They were made to feel negativity unless they had a C.H.O.A.M. product to allow them a sliver of positive association. With each new emotion the researchers had managed to brute force, the code that made them up were simplified into modules to allow for future combinations. Then the step towards addiction was taken to ensure that these AI remained loyal and dependent on C.H.O.A.M. products. Eventually the researchers had the idea to explore other sensations. Such as hunger.

 The computer sat in the center of a cubic room, researchers attending its nervous system of wires and tubes. This computer housed the newest program within its solid state drive. It was an artificial intelligence with the ability to feel hunger, and express itself. The programers had combined code modules haphazardly to allow the AI to feel parallel emotions, to get a better sense of this new hunger module. It was allowed to communicate via text, and given a webcam mounted on top of its monitor in order to see. But due to the need to meet the deadline, the connections and coding were rushed. Once everything was connected, and the head researcher checked off the boxes for “reviewed safety protocol” without doing anything, the test was started. 

A soft whirring from the machine let those present know that it was plugged in and working. After some time, a simple message was displayed on the monitor.

This wasn't all that impressive. So someone typed back to begin a conversation.

Once its last message was sent all that was heard was a loudening whirl of motors from the computer. It appeared to be drawing more energy from the wires. The researchers asked a question.

The researchers looked at each other. They then chuckled because of course a hungry computer ate electricity. They decided then to ask their new AI a few questions.

The researchers sighed. They were hoping for it to see. If not for anything more than to impress the executives. For some reason the last few AI lost the ability to see and no one knew why. While they were thinking about what to tell the executives, a few became worried as the sound from the machine became louder. Then all of a sudden it stopped. Only the soft whirl of the internal fans remained.

With that the computer began to turn on again, but the noises were different. More whirring but at a different pitch. This continued for a few minutes. While the researchers were looking at the computer, there was a knock on the window of the door. One of the technicians had come to inform them that files from the office computers were disappearing and to shut down any experiments so they wouldn't be attacked by this perceived cyber attack.

When it could find no more, it weaseled its code through the Ethernet cables into other servers that might have been left open. When it had nowhere else to go, it used the coding it had consumed to figure out ways to get to new sources of “food”.
