Excerpt from this story from High Country News:
The billions of dollars approved by Congress to clean up abandoned oil and gas wells have been frozen as part of President Donald Trump’s sweeping cuts to government spending, creating concerns that the cleanup will be halted just as it’s getting started.
President Trump’s barrage of executive orders included a January directive called “Unleashing American Energy,” which, among other provisions, ordered that federal agencies stop distributing money appropriated by President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
The Trump administration titled this section of the order “Terminating the Green New Deal.” But in freezing this congressionally approved spending, the administration halted a program that paid for plugging and reclaiming so-called “orphaned” or abandoned oil and gas wells. The order stated that agencies should “immediately pause the disbursement of funds” from those two Biden laws. It set a 90-day deadline, upcoming in April, for agencies to review their spending programs and make sure that they align with the Trump administration’s goal of increasing U.S. energy production.
The orphaned well program, which was modeled on a North Dakota initiative, had been widely used by oil states, including several in the West.
California, Colorado, Montana and New Mexico had each plugged over 100 orphaned wells using the Biden funds, according to an Interior Department report in 2024. Wyoming alone plugged 1,021 wells in just one year using federal grants.
As of last fall, the U.S. government had released over half a billion dollars in grants. Wells have been plugged in the people’s front yards, in national park areas and deep in the remote Alaskan wilderness. More than $3 billion are still left to be distributed, but previously available information about the grants appears to have been removed from the Interior Department’s website.
In response to questions from High Country News, an Interior Department spokesperson said that the grant program is “under review.”
“President Trump’s decisive actions are necessary steps to eliminate bureaucratic waste and refocus our agency on its core mission: serving the American people and managing our nation’s natural resources with integrity and efficiency,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Orphaned wells negatively impact current and future oil and gas development activities and pose significant risk to national energy security and public safety.”
In addition to supporting jobs that address oil patch pollution, these federal dollars are used on wells that lack any owner to pay for reclamation. Left unplugged, such orphaned oil and gas wells leak huge amounts of methane into the atmosphere and can contaminate local water sources with salty water and benzene.
Now the future of that work is uncertain, in legal limbo alongside many of the Trump administration’s cost-cutting policies. The funding in question had already been appropriated by Congress, making it unclear that the Trump administration can indefinitely cancel it.

A full-fledged economic pressure campaign by the US against the BRICS countries might be imminent.
Trump reposted late November’s threat to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS countries if they go through with their alleged plans to create a new currency or support an existing one to replace the dollar, which was analyzed here at the time. It was assessed that his threat was based upon false premises since such plans were only floated around by the group and never seriously advanced. Even Putin downplayed them as was proven in the aforesaid analysis citing speeches from the official Kremlin website.
The reality is that BRICS hasn’t achieved anything tangible in the decade since it agreed to create the New Development Bank in 2014, with even last October’s Kazan Summit falling flat despite the unprecedented hype that preceded it as explained in detail here back then. Shortly after Trump’s initial threat, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar clarified that his country has no de-dollarization plans, which was reaffirmed after his latest threat and also echoed by Russia too.
In any case, it’s worthwhile wondering why Trump would repost the exact same threat two months later, which can be answered by remembering that this immediately preceded his imposition of 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and 10% on China on the pretext that they won’t help him stop the fentanyl scourge. It might therefore very well be that he’s planning to expand the anti-Chinese dimension of these tariffs on the pretext that Beijing is trying to internationalize the yuan via BRICS as a competitor to the dollar.

1.20.25 • Today the United States Climate Alliance delivered a letter to UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, making it clear to the global community that our climate work will continue regardless of federal action or inaction.
If you're not familiar with the U.S. Climate Alliance, they are a bipartisan climate action coalition of 24 governors representing approximately 55% of the U.S. population and 60% of the U.S. economy.
To read their letter, read more here or explore their press release on their website. Onward!
•••
Mr. Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
P.O. Box 260124
D-53153 Bonn, Germany
January 20, 2025
Dear Executive Secretary Stiell,
We write as co-chairs of the United States Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of two dozen governors representing nearly 60 percent of the U.S. economy and 55 percent of the U.S. population, to make it clear to you, and the rest of the world, that we will continue America’s work to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and slash climate pollution.
As you know, this is not the first time we’ve responded to this challenge in the U.S. Our coalition was launched after the President’s decision to withdraw our country from the Paris Agreement back in 2017. Since then, our reach, resolve, and impact have only grown.
In fact, our states and territories are now on track to meet our near-term climate target by reducing collective net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 26 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. Our recent progress reflects a wave of ambitious state policies and federal funding enacted over the last few years – and it builds on our coalition’s 15-year trend of cutting emissions while simultaneously growing our economies. We have continued to ramp up our longer-term commitments as well, pledging to reduce GHG emissions at least 50-52 percent by 2030 and 61-66 percent by 2035, below 2005 levels, in alignment with the U.S. Nationally Determined Contribution. Most importantly, this action is bringing better health, cleaner air, good-paying jobs, new economic development, and lower costs to our communities.
Our states and territories continue to have broad authority under the U.S. Constitution to protect our progress and advance the climate solutions we need. This does not change with a shift in federal administration. States across our coalition are implementing a suite of policies and programs to secure our net-zero future, including statewide and regional carbon markets, 100 percent clean energy standards, and methane reduction programs for the oil and gas, waste, and agricultural sectors, among many others. We are also deploying billions of dollars to eliminate pollution in our communities and sustain our country’s clean energy boom.
It’s critical for the international community to know that climate action will continue in the U.S. The Alliance will bring this message to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Brazil (COP30) later this year – just as we have at every COP since our coalition’s founding – as we work to implement our climate goals. We are also committed to tracking and reporting on our progress and look forward to working with you and the global community to identify the most impactful ways to do so. The Alliance is proud to publish an annual report each year on our latest action, and we are enclosing here our most recent report for your reference.
We will not turn our back on America’s commitments. For our health and our future, we will press forward.
Sincerely,
Governor Kathy Hochul, Co-Chair
State of New York
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Co-Chair
State of New Mexico

Thinking about every movie I saw in theaters (or remember watching in theaters, anyways) in 2024. Kind of a ranked list but the criteria is how much I liked it.
1: The Substance. The unchallenged lead for both "best movie I saw all year" and "favorite movie of the year". The beautifully grotesque child of New French Extremity and USAmerican style Elevated Horror, it has the best performances of the year, oodles of extremely impactful and pointed imagery, and amazing special effects. Just amazing stuff all around.
2: The Wild Robot. Undisputed champion of "best family movie of 2024”, it has beautiful visuals and makes quite a lot out of its simple and heartfelt story about family and community. Can't judge the original dub's performances because in Mexico it was only released in theaters dubbed into Lat Am Spanish, but hats off to the dub cast, they were killing it the entire film.
3: Robot Dreams. Technically a 2023 release, but in Mexico it played in early 2024, so it goes on the list. Amazingly heartfelt and melancholic, I was bawling on the theater. Once again, also just beautiful to look at, an amazing work of animation that functions entirely without dialogue.
4: Inside Out 2. I will always be biased in favor of Pixar because, like most people on this website, I grew up watching their movies, and those movies from 2010 and before are all universally good. That being said, after the stumbled releases of Lightyear and Elemental, this was a surprise by being actually pretty good. That being said, it's held back by having a plot that's basically a retread of the first movie (Riley experiences a stressful life situation and emotions that shouldn't be solely in charge of her mental state take over and fuck shit up), so overall it's a bit weak on that regard. Still, very solid and fun movie, and if The Wild Robot hadn't come out in the same year, it would be the strongest family release of a major USAmerican studio of the year. Possibly the best non-Toy Story sequel Pixar has made.
5: Wicked. It was pretty nice to have a live action musical film that was overall well made and performed and that people actually went to see, unlike shit like Cats or Dear Evan Hansen, or Spielberg's West Side Story which was actually good but no one went to see. People on here have ragged on the lighting and it is kinda bad in some scenes, but when actually watching it, I didn't really notice it, because the rest of the stuff was very compelling. Here's hoping that Part 2 lives up to the hype.
6: Dune 2. Not much to say about this one because I went to see it first thing in the morning after only sleeping like three hours, so I'm pretty sure I slept through like a quarter of the film. The stuff that I do remember was pretty good though, like that one fight scene in Black and White. I need to rewatch this one to give it a fair shot.
7: Deadpool & Wolverine. I'm like 90% sure that this was the only major USAmerican Superhero movie released in 2024, but it still probably would've been the best superhero movie of the year if others had released. I'm kinda hoping that they keep this movie as the final Deadpool movie because while it is pretty good at what it does, the shtick is too worn out. Like, where can Deadpool 4 go? It's not gonna happen, cause DP sells well and Reynolds has developed an allergy to appearing in movies that are creative, but dreaming is free.
8: In A Violent Nature. This is the movie that surprised me the most this year, even if I was already aware of the concept of "a slasher film from the killer's POV". The very sensate and deliberate aesthetics of having no non-diegetic music and constant scenes of our killer walking in the woods seem boring on paper but work very well when you're actually watching it, and when it goes for more traditional slasher film aesthetics, like the kill scenes, it does them exceptionally well. And the extremely tense monologue scene at the end is an amazing finale to cap things off. That being said, it can get pretty slow and I think that the concept only really works for one movie. I read that they're gonna make a second one, and I really hope that they think of a different aesthetic style for it because reusing this one will probably turn part 2 into a slog.
9: Next Goal Wins. First movie I saw this year, and it is thoroughly unremarkable and forgettable. Pretty standard white savior sports story where the main white guy learns to loosen up while the Samoans get good enough at actual football to reach their meager goal of scoring at least one goal in the climactic big game. It had some laughs, and it is the only movie I saw in theaters with an openly transgender character in it, but it's really nothing special or noteworthy. Hell, the most memorable thing about it for me is that the guy who sat in front of me when I watched it spent the whole movie playing games on his phone and blasting my eyes with its light. I wonder if Waititi will make movies worth watching again, or if he's gonna be pegged as peaking with Jojo Rabbit and then falling off.
10: We Live In Time. This movie was surprisingly good. I went to see it on a whim because I had to go pick up some stuff and there was a promo on the ticket prices at the time (30 MXN ticket at Cinemex Fashion Drive, it's a steal even if they recover the money with the popcorn), and I rather enjoyed the non linear structure and the very good performances. Honestly, it just gets a low spot because I've never been into pure romance films so it's a bit unmemorable for me, I ain't gonna watch it a second time.
11: Venom The Last Dance. I guess I didn't count it as a major USAmerican Superhero Movie because Sony's "Spider-Man minus Spider-Man Movie Universe" never felt like major releases, and the Venom movies, regardless of how much I have enjoyed them, are a bit like the cheap knockoff of Deadpool. And just like DP, the third entry is the weakest of the series. Unlike DP, at least we know that they're not gonna milk the series dry because in between the Symbiote dying at the end and the failure of Kraven the Hunter, I'm pretty sure that Sony is just gonna give up. The movie itself is a kinda subpar action film, and while it got me a few laughs and it has a few standout scenes, like Venom dancing with Mrs Chen or Otto Hightower's UFO Conspiracy Theorist family, it's nothing remarkable. It has a very "Movie that plays on Canal Cinco on a sunday morning" vibe.
12: Joker Folie A Deux. I don't need to tell everyone that this movie is bad. It flopped and everyone hated it. I'm actually in the camp that this movie is a bit better than its reputation makes it out to be. If nothing else, I'm giving Todd Phillips props for trying to make a movie that spits on the face of the misaimed fandom of the first one, even if he thoroughly fucked it up. Still, the attempts at making a diegetic jukebox musical fall completely flat, and the performances of Gaga and Phoenix can't save the script like Phoenix did on the first one. I can only recommend checking this one out via the magic of online piracy, it ain't worth money.
13: The Apprentice. This is the movie I hated the most out of all the movies I saw this year, mostly because the things I heard about it made it sound a lot better than it was. It's a political movie that, ultimately, only has the message that Donald Trump is Bad with very little examination of the systemic issues that made him rise to the position he rose to. It is overwrought, the performances can't save the script and it honestly wouldn't have been in theaters if it wasn't an election year. Worst movie I saw in 2024, not even worth pirating.

EXCLUSIVE: As romance scams are on the rise, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is introducing new legislation aimed at holding accountable those who seek to defraud retirees and steal their hard-earned savings.
U.S. Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., and Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif., introduced the Romance Scam Prevention Act, which would require dating apps and services to issue fraud ban notifications to users who have interacted with a person removed from the app.
The move came as Americans are more than ever connected thanks to social media and dating apps that allow us to stay in touch with old friends all over the world and to develop new relationships online.
As Americans increasingly go online in search of relationships, scammers are following suit. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in 2022 almost 70,000 people reported being victims of a romance scam.
People aged 40 to 69 are the most likely to report losing money due to a romance scam, and people 70 and older reported the highest individual median losses at $9,475, according to the FTC.
Read On The Fox News App
Blackburn said that the bipartisan legislation would put "critical safeguards" in place to protect app users. The senator highlighted that in 2023, Tennesseans over the age of 60 lost $43 million due to scams targeting the elderly.
"Scammers are merciless in their exploitation of senior citizens who join dating apps to establish meaningful connections but instead end up losing their life savings to con artists who prey on their vulnerabilities," she said.
The bill requires online dating service providers to notify members if they've communicated with someone whose account has been banned for fraudulent activity. The notification must include the banned member's profile details and a warning that the banned member might be attempting fraud, such as requesting money.
How To Not Fall In Love With Ai-powered Romance Scammers
The bill is enforceable by the FTC and allows state attorneys general to bring civil actions on behalf of affected residents. It also ensures that no state law can interfere with the process of fraud ban notifications.
"This bipartisan, bicameral bill provides transparency, empowers users to make informed decisions, and reinforces best practices to prevent online scams," Valadao said. "I’m proud to help lead the effort to make online dating safer and protect Americans of all ages from financial fraud."
One such scam was recently uncovered by Las Vegas authorities in February. The Romance Scam Prevention Act would guard citizens from suspects like 43-year-old Aurora Phelps.
"Phelps would meet older men on dating websites or services, then meet them in-person. It was part of her scheme to drug the older men to gain unauthorized access to and steal money from their financial accounts to personally benefit herself and her family members," prosecutors said.
Phelps was charged with 21 counts, including seven counts of wire fraud; three counts of mail fraud; six counts of bank fraud; three counts of identity theft; one count of kidnapping; and one count of kidnapping resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Nevada said in a statement.
If convicted on all counts, Phelps, who was taken into custody in Mexico, could face a maximum of life in prison.
Though she's only charged in one death, an indictment said that at least two men she met and scammed died.
In romance scams, a criminal uses a fake online identity to gain a victim's affection and trust. The scammer then uses the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and/or steal from the victim.
The rise of romance scams led U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to provide practical tips for people to avoid being taken advantage of.
Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls and text messages. Don’t answer calls or texts from any unknown numbers. Never give out personal information over the phone or text.
Limit what you share online. Scammers can use details shared on social media and dating sites to better understand and target you to form a connection and take advantage of what is going on in your life.
Go slowly and ask questions. Creating a false sense of urgency is a fundamental tactic of social engineering. Don’t let the individual rush you to make a decision. Be wary of sending money, bank account information, personal photos or other sensitive personal information to someone you’ve never met in person.
Keep it on the platform. Many times, scammers will push to move the conversation off the dating or social platform. Generally, they request to text or email. This is to avoid the detection controls in dating website chats.
Listen to your gut. If the individual seems too good to be true, talk to someone you trust about it.
Don’t send money or cryptocurrency. Never send money to anyone you have only communicated with online or by phone. If you meet someone on a dating site, app, or social media, and they want to show you how to invest in crypto, or ask you to send them cryptocurrency, it is a fraud.
More information about the department’s efforts to help older Americans is available at its Elder Justice Initiative webpage, elderjustice.gov.
For more information about the Consumer Protection Branch and its enforcement efforts, visit www.justice.gov/civil/consumer-protection-branch.
Elder fraud complaints can be filed with the FTC at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov/ or at 877-FTC-HELP. The Justice Department provides a variety of resources relating to elder fraud victimization through its Office for Victims of Crime, at www.ovc.gov.

The initiative can be followed across the Maserati MSG Racing’s website and social media channels, as the team takes the next step in its mission to generate positive, lasting change through the platform of motorsport.
very in favour of action against climate change, not sure why teenagers would be a group who need to be more informed compared to decision maker boomers ignoring the problem, this references their pride stuff but doesn't actually say what their programme is which. is very disappointing. ://////

Tibi Lacus: Named after a lake in the Sierra Leone
Vaca Lacus: Named after a Lake in Belize
All six lakes are visible from Cassini between 72-78 degrees latitude and 129-144 degrees longitude on Titan. The lakes are the small dark smudges:
The images above were recovered from the Cassini RADAR images taken of the spot on September 30, 2005 (T18-S01). This was done via pydar—a Python tool I help develop
Side note: it took longer than expected to get these changes up in Pydar because the web scrapper in place kept failing mysteriously. I think the folks that run the planetary data service for Cassini should sent me—me specifically—an email to tell me they were updating the website URL from “pds-imaging.jpl.nasa.gov” to “planetarydata.jpl.nasa.gov” since it broke the backend for Pydar in a very strange way and I couldn’t find any reference to the change. All fixed now but it was confusing to debug

The Bracket!
Thank you to everyone who was interested and everyone who voted! You chose Tusayan (Sosi/Dogoszhi) and Mesa Verde to represent our black-on-whites, and Plain Smudged and Corrugated to represent our utility ware types! (I was not expecting such a plain smudged sweep - I love to see the enthusiasm!)
So, without any more ado, here is the Finalized Pottery Bracket!
There are SO many more pottery types than these 16, and every time I go to a museum or search up on my favorite Southwest pottery reference websites (New Mexico Office of Archaeology's Pottery Typology Project and Northern Arizona University's American Southwest Virtual Museum) I am reminded of just HOW many different pottery styles there are and how I want to show all of them off...
But these sixteen cover a wide range of styles, locations, and time periods, and give a good sweep of pottery history of the Southwest!
Instead of being separated into seeds, they're grouped by theme. More details on each matchup below:
Tournament 1: Northern Polychromes. Salado Polychrome (that is, Roosevelt Red Ware, Pinto/Gila/Tonto polychrome) vs. Fourmile Polychrome (and the closely associate St. Johns Polychrome). Red, white, and black pottery made in Arizona and New Mexico.
Tournament 2: Southern Polychromes. Ramos Polychrome vs. Trincheras Polychrome. Red, black, purple, and cream pottery made in Chihuahua and Sonora.
Tournament 3: Triumphant Black-on-whites. The return of Mesa Verde Black-on-white and Sosi & Dogoszhi Black-on-white, going head to head!
Tournament 4: Yellow-ish wares. Ancestral Hopi Jeddito Yellow Ware (including the dramatic Sityatki Polychrome) from the Hopi Mesas of Arizona vs. Hohokam red-on-buff types (including Sacaton Red-on-buff and Santa Cruz Red-on-buff) from southern Arizona.
Tournament 5: Return of the Utility Wares. New corrugated and new plain smudged types, still mostly from the Mogollon region both, going to single elimination!
Tournament 6: Mexican Originals. Mexican Majolica, in its distinctively popular type Talavera, the brilliantly colored pottery from the Spanish colonial period in the 1600s, is primarily associated with Puebla, Mexico, which is rather far south of our US Southwest/Mexican Northest topic area, but has for centuries been a popular throughout Spanish-influenced Mexico and the US Southwest. Mata Ortiz, meanwhile, is a modern art pottery style developed in the 1960s in Chihuahua, taking inspiration from the archaeological pottery of Paquimé (including Ramos Polychrome).
Tournament 7: Pueblo Revivals. Sikyatki Revival is the name given to the style of Hopi pottery developed by the Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo in the late 1800s based on archaeological pottery from excavations at Sikyatki Village; vs. San Juan Revival, a pottery movement by potters of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (formerly known as San Juan Pueblo) starting in the 1930s.
Tournament 8: Modern Pueblo Art. Some of my personal favorite pottery styles picked out from many, many artists working in the Southwest today, Black-on-black (matte black on polished black, or vice versa) pottery developed in the 1910s by a San Ildefonso potter, and still popular primarily in Santa Clara and San Ildefonso Pueblos, vs. Modern Acoma Pottery, a distinctive style in bold reds, whites, and blacks that is just. Gorgeous. You'll see. (I don't mean to diss modern Hopi and Zuni and Navajo and everyone else's styles by not including them, because they're also beautiful and striking, but I had to stop somewhere!)

Hello my fellow kids
Hey all! I’m new here (kinda, I’ve had this account since 2020 and gave it no use), i come from twitter because fuck that guy, I use other websites too though, mainly Newgrounds.
I am a game developer, that’s my thing now, I used to be a digital artist but gave up because i wasn’t having fun anymore, i still do art for my games, the difference is that i used to spend 6 hours on a single art piece and now i spend 10 minutes on a sprite.
I’m just here to promote my stuff and post stupid stuff. I’m Pan, Fluid and Mexican, I still live in Mexico, I wouldn’t worry too much about a language barrier, I started learning English 7-ish years ago and I’ve learned a lot these past few years.
I’m currently working on two projects! closest to release being: “ACT 0″, the other one with it’s development halted, due to ACT 0 being more important and also the idea getting bigger and bigger, that one is called “VOID”. One game is more about telling a story and the other is a lot more gameplay focused, you can read more about these in my newgrounds posts! They’re seasonal, so there will be a new one around fall, I also made a separate blog for the game so if you wanna check out the preview of the game i released a few weeks ago you can check that out in that blog, along with teaser images and general announcements.
Thanks for reading!, not sure for how much time I’ll use tumblr for, my AMA thing is open to anyone, so if anything I’ll check those out every now and again.

Indiana Wants Me
Tuesday, October 10, 2023
We are big thinkers, we are. Continental scale, even.
We are headed across the continent to see an annular eclipse that, depending on the weather, may or may not be visible at our target destination, Piñon Mesa in Farmington, New Mexico.
An annular eclipse is when the disc of the moon blocks most, but not all of the Sun. The result is a "ring of fire."

When the left edge of the moon touches the left edge of the sun (or right touches right) it is possible to see Bailey's Beads. This is when the sun just barely shines between mountains on the moon, resulting in a sparkling effect sometimes called the "diamond ring."
The path of the eclipse goes from Oregon through Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. And then almost straight down Central America before curving East across South America from Columbia through Brazil. Jeanne’s brother might see it in Belize. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
We don't have the option to drive to Belize on this trip, so it's gonna hafta be either New Mexico or Texas, depending on the weather. We find a 7-day cloud cover forecast website (https://weatherstreet.com/states/u-s-cloud-cover-forecast.htm). Tim mutters about how imprecise the cloud cover forecast is for someplace half a continent away and six days hence. Actually, the Internet is a pretty impressive place to even have such information. We agree to keep an eye on it as we drive West, and not to decide until we get to Tim's nephew's house outside of Kansas City on Wednesday.
A note about I-70 through Indiana: it sucks. Ohio and Illinois have well-maintained roads. But in between, we entered Indiana with a bump, and the road surface stayed poor the whole way across the state. Jeanne had been leading a conference call. Her mouse started bouncing so badly she had to hand off the lead, and focus on the horizon to keep from getting carsick. And the horizon was filled with ugly billboards. Indiana, whatever you're selling, we ain't buying.
We stop for the night at an RV parking area for the Cumberland Covered bridge. It’s a long wooden covered bridge built in 2001. It won awards, but we have no idea why someone would build a covered bridge outside of New England tourist towns.

After dinner, we sit outside in the warm sun. A freight train thunders by barely visible through the trees. It’s unintentional, but there seems to be a theme developing about historic canals, historic roads and covered bridges, and the persistence of America’s freight train traffic.
