A little while after I'd Fallen into Hearthome, I found a river. I was just examining the area a little bit when a Blitzle swimming in it suddenly passed by. Not swimming, really— more like struggling to stay above water. So I ran after her, jumped into the river, and then jumped out once I grabbed her.

you know, the fact that you can just casually fight against the current of a running river like that doesn't really surprise me.

We had to learn how to swim in the oasis in case of an emergency. Also, I wasn't in there for very long.

1- 'what are they' well. they're kinda stoats. Nedzu's a lil more rat-like and Shouta's a little more cat-like, but they're both definitely Creatures.

2- Shouta was a baby when he and Nedzu escaped the lab testing on them; none of his littermates survived. He doesn't really remember that. Nedzu does.

3- the lab was actually working on developing anti-AfO measures, testing the idea that AfO couldn't steal a quirk from an animal like he could a human, and developing Erasure. AfO caught wind and sent some minions to destroy it, which caused the distraction Nedzu and Shouta used to escape.

4- Shouta isn't as smart as Nedzu, but he is at human level, and has Erasure. He definitely thinks he's smarter than most humans though. His friend Hizashi is one that he doesn't think he's smarter than, though how much of that is related to Hizashi providing him with brightly colored fuzzy socks that he uses as sleeping bags is unknown. (kidding, he is fully aware of Hizashi's a-rank intelligence. unlike some authors.)

5- "so is Shouta still a combat underground hero or is he more investigative like Nedzu?" oh he's combat alright. he doesn't use a capture weapon: he just goes for the neck and brings down much bigger prey than you'd think he could for his size. like a stoat does.

but one nice (like opposite of sad as opposed to complimenting myself eogkgjdfkgj) headcanon i have is that all senior enchanters have a repertoire of entirely useless spells. things like, for example, the ability to create entirely harmless little creatures made of light, that glitter and sparkle -- butterflies and puppies and dragons and birds and kittens. it's useful, they argue, because it helps calm down the younger apprentices and entertain them. it's not, though, because there's other ways to do that, which means this magic has no use.

and we never really see magic that isn't for use. and i assume this is partly because of things like the in-game mechanisms (and ive been feeling out a whole host of ideas to make thedas feel more... magicky) but i also think it's a product of magic primarily being used for war and battle. (magic, after all, exists to serve man - a universal truth in thedas that seems to persist across cultures and races.) i think a lot of things that aren't useful have been carved out of regular magic practice because the idea of magic existing - without purpose, without use, but just existing, as natural as air and water - makes people extremely uncomfortable (i haven't quite decided if this is applicable to all cultures but i do think it's something to think about because i HAVEN'T seen the kind of casual magic use i'm imagining).

and so it brings me fierce joy to think about useless magic. not just in apostates who have never had to be in the circle but specifically for circle mages, who are incarcerated and told daily that the only good thing about their magic is that it's useful. and they know all these useless bits of magic - magic that doesn't cause harm or hurt, magic that isn't for healing or making someone stronger, magic that has no use for battle or war.

it's just... magic. magic cast for the sake of magic.

3. Opinions on fantasy depictions of witchcraft/paganism? Needs more perverts, hot werewolves, and state-toppling always, also absolutely a formative place for me finding my way into magic as a kid to the present tbh. And I think a useful gauge generally for how magic works in ostensibly ~secular cultures (e.g. Harry Potter isn't good art, but the magic system/culture imo is v revealing about the spiritual culture of British imperialism and class hierarchy).

My longtime favourites have been real deep political and spiritual teachers for me and I think it's good and healthy (for me at least, maybe for you too) to weave into our practice – I do ritual watches/reads of Princess Mononoke, Lord of the Rings, Parable of the Sower, and The Wickerman, recently loved N.K. Jemisin's Great Cities books as a way to articulate better how I understand urban magic, etc. Always vibed with 'negative' depictions of witchcraft/paganism that are queer, camp, horror, and/or S/M coded (The Devils (1971), The Love Witch, Midsommar, The VVitch, The Craft), tho I think those all really vary about how much they actually depict full-fledged magical/spiritual systems? so I think we limit ourselves only imagining magical practice within those genres, since they're so centred around (upholding, critiquing, or both) white, usually Christian Westernness. I deliberately wouldn't call most of these fantasy and absolutely none of these about 'witchcraft/paganism' since they're about non-white, culturally specific spiritual/religious/magical systems I'm not part of, but think I'd feel remiss in this question not acknowledging the debt I owe to media like Reservation Dogs, Rita Indiana's Tentacle, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler, and Hayao Miyazaki's canons in general, and Eloghosa Osunde's Vagabonds! in starting to develop my understandings of ancestral and spirit work, animism, magical power, and spiritual ethics/responsibility.

27. Are you confident in your beliefs? I think increasingly confident in the why and the who, increasingly overwhelmed by the what and the how, lmao. My practice is mostly DIY and only like, four years old-proper! So v content with letting things cook, and confident that that's good for me, that the spirits/deities I work with are real and need to be treated as such, that I have a good set of tools I'll keep refining and developing. I suspect I'll have less frequent? maybe? paradigm shifts in 5-10 years but especially since I'm not joining an existing tradition, who's to say!

29. Why are you a witch? What need does it serve? I resonate a lot with what you said both about it bringing me fully into conversation with the world, and also about it being just a true thing about me, similar to how some people just know they're trans. Maybe similar to how I think about transness, I think I understood it at a gut level early on, have lived many versions of it, and chose to step into it more actively and intentionally as I got older; it also feels like a natural tool and response, a necessary undertaking, to surviving and being in the world and in complete, full community with people, spirits, ancestors, land. Also I do just think it's very chic of us!
