It was 1897, a warm spring evening at just about sunset, when the red-headed stranger rode into the little town of Rosarita, Texas, tied his horse to the hitching-post in front of the Little Nugget Saloon, then walked inside and shot the owner, Race Jago, dead.
While everyone was still startled into immobility, he calmly placed his pistola upon the bar top, looked around and asked, “Well? Ain’t nobody gonna call th’ sheriff?” and waited while someone did so.

I’ve always believed that Westerns aren’t really for me. Until I read Nunslinger by Stark Holburn and The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt which gave me a whole new appreciation for the genre. Lonesome Dove looked intimidating in terms of length but thanks to some wonderful bookstagram friends, it was quite the wild ride and such a great adventure story. Hey, it won a Pulitzer Prize for a good reason!⁣ ⁣ It follows the inhabitants of a dusty little Texas town called Lonesome Dove as a group of men (and one incredibly determined woman) set out on the journey of a lifetime to see if there is a better life for them all miles away from the monotony of their everyday existence. ⁣ ⁣ This novel is filled with everything you could want from a tome just under 1000 pages long. Epic in scope, in what it chooses to deliver and in how the narrative plays out for our unique and memorable set of characters, Lonesome Dove is nothing short of breathtaking. ⁣ ⁣ Furthermore, I love that I went into this story with no prior knowledge of the events that occur and very little expectations. It made the journey all the sweeter and the surprises even more exciting when they come. This is an adventure story but it’s also much more than that. We have love, death, betrayal and those cliffhanger moments where anything could (and does) happen. ⁣ ⁣ The only thing that didn’t sit quite right with me was the casual racism and the way certain characters were treated based on their ethnicity (Native American and Mexican) and although you might say it’s a book “of its time,” I just wanted to put it out there as it did make me uncomfortable. ⁣ ⁣ I am keen to read the rest of the books in the series though. Thanks to Steve, Celeste and Rich amongst many others for making this long journey with me! ⁣ ⁣Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣#bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #readingwithfriends📚 #buddyreadobsession #lonesomedove #larrymcmurtry #epicnovels #westernnovels #recommendedreads👍 #seriesiwanttoread #booksandplantstagram #reviewingonline ⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CledFaVLV8G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

While a bunch of people travel during summer, I ended up spending some time assembling wooden crates from IKEA so I could finally unpack my late father's collection of Western novels. I'll paint the crates eventually, but for now, I'm happy they're assembled. . . . #bookstagram #vintagebooks #westernnovel https://www.instagram.com/p/CgR_hG4LHZC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! Happy Friday and welcome to the weekend. I’ve got an excellent weekend planned but am taking it easy tonight in bed with my books as it seems the week has caught up with me! Time for a book haul. Violent Phenomena is another addition to my @tiltedaxisbooks collection. I have a subscription with them and I’m always excited to find out what’s coming next. This is a book of essays in which 24 writers and translators from across the world share their ideas and practices for disrupting and decolonising translation. Coincidentally I’m about to start this second book today! I’m buddy reading this with a host of lovely bookstagrammers hosted by @pezzasclassicbooks and @celestes.bookshelf ☺️ This novel is the Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece and a powerful, triumphant portrayal of the American West as it really was. 🤠 Finally, my sister @chrissireads loaned me One Of The Girls to read after we read and enjoyed The Castaways together. This is the story of six friends enjoying a Greek holiday together. One is a liar, one is a stranger, one is a cheater, who is a killer? I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaul #paperbackhaul #violentphenomena #tiltedaxispress #booksintranslation #kavitabhanot #jeremytiang #lonesomedove #larrymcmurtry #oneofthegirls #lucyclarke #newbooksplease #cantstopwontstopbuyingbooks #westernnovels #thrillernovelsallday https://www.instagram.com/p/Cik2yhGLwxy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I sent my newsletter out today and got the coolest message back from a reader. She told me that the titles of my new books were driving her crazy. She said the lyrics of a particular song from the past were running through her brain. And she couldn't get them off her mind. (Two of the heroes are singer-songwriters so, yay, music!) Anyway, she begged me for confirmation. Was the song____ by____, the inspiration for the titles of the books? I just posted the answer in my stories. Click the round photo of my face above if you're curious. ^^^^ I love it when people respond to my newsletters! I never know if people read them. And to anyone who reads my newsletters, thank you!!!❤❤❤ . . . #westernromance #romancereaders #cowboyromancenovel #westernnovel #romance #book #novel #bookbuzz #indiepub #indieauthor #romancenovels #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B41ZMfPgvYh/?igshid=3uiua6wp5ttm

My Year of the Book - Day 71: A.B. “Bud” Guthrie may not be a household name today, but his influence on multiple generations of western writers can’t be overstated. His stories did not romanticize the West, and his characters were not always heroic or even likable. He won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for his novel, “The Big Sky,” a book about fur hunters and free trappers in Montana’s Big Sky Country. He began it after winning a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard, and finished while on the faculty at the now famous Bread Loaf Writers Conference in Vermont. The novel was a huge commercial success as well, and he followed it two years later with “The Way West” (1949). Both were made into big studio films, the first starring Kirk Douglas and Dewey Martin, and the latter with Douglas, Robert Mitchum and Richard Widmark. Guthrie soon made the trip to Hollywood himself, and ended up writing screenplays, including one for the Alan Ladd film classic “Shane” (1953), based on Jack Schaefer’s novel. He finished his four-novel series about the West with “These Thousand Hills” (1956) and (much later) “Arfive” (1970). From 1962 to 1977, Guthrie also served as general editor of the very collectible American Trails series for McGraw Hill, working with many of his fellow writer pals, including Wallace Stegner, George Stewart, Stewart Holbrook, David Lavender, Hodding Carter, Ferol Egan and others. His autobiography, “The Blue Hen’s Chick,” appeared in 1965. He passed away in 1991 at his home in Montana. #abguthrie #westernwriter #wallacestegner #western #thebigsky #thewaywest #book #pulitzer #westernnovel #bookish #bibliophile #bookgeek #reading #mylibrary #yearofthebook #rarebooks #firstedition #americantrails #georgerstewart

Sipping my Creme Brûlée tea whilst sinking deeper and deeper into Vengeance Road. I’m on chapter eight and it’s proving to be the kind of old fashioned story that keeps you reading late into the night. It’s full of the same heroism and justice and love that comes with the best Westerns. When I think of vast prickly pear lined deserts, and mountainous skylines, honest conversations, and heart paths, I think of First Aid Kit. Their entire body of work has become my playlist for this novel. “Brother” just fills me with happy, and it belongs on vinyl. Sometimes it feels strange to listen to any of @firstaidkitband on an iPod. I’ve never been so happy that I have many more pages left of this and a second installment to look forward to. #nowspining #vinyllover #vinylrecords #bookstagram #erinbowman @heyerin #pioneerlife #westernnovel #firstaidkit
