OKAY OKAY for real I just care Visualive so much (as someone who can’t fully understand Japanese AHAHA)

First I’ll add some foundation about what Visualive really is, then I talk abt Adachi in the latter parts of it because this is technically the first time I’m properly talking about this hehe 🐿

VISUALIVE “Persona 4.” A stage adaptation of SMT: Persona 4 by Atlus. It adapts the first part of the story, from the hero’s arrival to after recovering Mitsuo Kubo from the TV world. It also ends on a cliff hanger, showing a teaser of Shadow Naoto being projected on the screen.

It takes up a speedy recapitulation of the hero’s spring life, before slowing down and showing in depth his school life in summer. A day before Morooka-sensei’s death, there is a little skit with Kou, Daisuke and Adachi. The hero walks into the conversation before the two other boys leaving, and Morooka-sensei walking in on the student and detective. The next day follow’s the teacher’s death and the Investigation Team (IT) begin investigating their new lead.

From the words “visual” and “alive,” the niche of this stage was meant to be the fusion of live acting and visual digital projections. All seen from the stageplay with the colorful cast of actors and CG animations being projected on the screen. This offers an opportunity for characters to summon their personas, perform cool visual effects, change the backdrop, or even confront their own Shadows.

Performed in Sunshine Theater from the 15th to the 20th of March 2012. The screenplay was written and directed by Shintaro Asanuma from the theatrical group “bpm.” The video production produced by Shutaro Oku, a film director and visual planner. He later takes over as director for VISUALIVE THE EVOLUTION, the sequel stage. The stage music was produced by Shunsuke Wada, with a special show exclusive vocal track sung by Shihoko Hirata.

On this note, I haven’t seen any sort of original soundtrack released for any of the stages and I’m SO SAD. The last song in Mitsuo’s boss fight was such a BANGER and literally EVERYTHING ELSE Marvelous, Wadasan please take my MONEY

Regarding the cast, there were some special accommodations for Teddie, Rise, and Nanako, all of which did not have live actors at the time. During the casting, actors for the three characters could not be found or simply left the directors unsatisfied they couldn’t cast anybody. An exception for Rise, who was able to have a live actor in the sequel stage. It has been stated that there weren’t any “pretty boy” actors that fit the “Teddie Criteria.” While there weren’t any child actors that were believed to portray Nanako well.

Teddie was only ever seen in his bear costume while Rise was busy talking through a call, all voiced by their video game cast. Nanako has never appeared on stage, only being scarcely mentioned in the script. Again, this is different in the sequel stage where her role was extremely important and was shown as a screen projection.

VISUALIVE “Persona 4” THE EVOLUTION. A sequel stage. Beginning abruptly in the middle of Shadow Naoto’s boss fight, the story continues from there until the “true end” of the game’s original story. *Certain characters are introduced while others have been reintroduced. And on a personal note, when it’s all comedic in the beginning, it’s all for what’s coming right after.

I don’t know if I’m salty or just find it really funny AHAHA I might go talk abt it some other day with more context ehehe

Performed in The Galaxy Theater from the 3rd to the 9th of October 2012, only a few months after the PSVITA Persona 4 Golden release, which is July 2012. The screenplay was now written by Jun Kumagi while directed by Shutaro Oku. And music production finally taken over by Shoji Meguro himself.

My thoughts on the stage adaptations. For the first Visualive (VL) I believe it’s pretty close to canon! I enjoy the characterization and how much love and care was present when handling the entire production.

Actors were busy playing the game itself, wherein a PS2 was present in the practice room. Along with magazines and game guides explaining the game’s story and the characters itself. Actors performing together and even improv acting together to get a grasp of their characters. All of them knowing well of Persona 4 as a well loved game, delicately handling their characters and hopefully performing them right while making the audience happy.

The staff taking care of each other while the director and video producer, Asanuma-san and Oku-san, working together well to make their vision into a reality.

The same thing happened with VL the Evolution (VLE) and literally every other good stage. Except... I feel the script kinda got out of hand with too much liberty where it feels a bit more disconnected from canon. But! It makes up for it in its content, whether comedic or (INCREDIBLY) dramatic! It’s great as its own story at that point. So in this case, I like to take the first VL and get to connect it canon, while I don’t know what the hell happened in VLE to the point I’ll just enjoy it as its own content.

These opinions deserve its own essay, post whatever bc I have SO much to say abt this. ANYWAY. VL ADACHI

Tohru Adachi is portrayed by Masami Itou (伊藤マサミ), a screenplay writer, director and an stage actor himself. He does have a single character voice role along with a fellow troupe member in the same franchise, but mostly works as the former three. He is part of Asanuma-san’s entertainment group “bpm.” On a similar note, Masashi Taniguchi, Dojima’s actor, was also part of their group from 2011 to 2016, which may explain their good synergy as the boss and the bumbling fool dynamic. I mean, somebody’s gotta get hit in the head every few skits.

With Masami-san being an important part of the cast, he doesn’t appear as often as Taniguchi-san in backstage content like the VL bonus disk or the official blog. Mentioned in his own personal blog, he had been busy with his roles as assistant director (I am assuming also for VL).

Also fun to note, because his role is mainly comic relief, he has been using his liberty to change up the material almost everyday making each performance exciting. This also leaves some other actors jealous of his freedom in his role, such as Saotome-san, Daisuke’s actor.

VL Adachi really has a... how do I say this? an adorable speech pattern (THE SAME SPEECH PATTERN THAT DROVE ME MAD TRYING TO DECIPHER I THOUGHT YOU WERE A CITY BOY OSSU OSSU MY ASS /shakes you violently/). Overall, he really fits the loose lipped bumbling fool, and his accent really makes him seem more casual and invested. What I’m saying is... VL Adachi either actually has genuine empathy or he actually has more energy to fake it (compared to some other edgelord. i mean you saw my p4ga analysis. I’m sick of him lol ahaha).

One of my favorite ways to explain this (OTHER THAN CHAIR CAR ADVENTURE MY BELOVED WE’LL GET TO THAT LATER) is the rice field scene with him and Dojima. It’s overanalyzation time 🎉

While investigating, Adachi whines about being tired while Dojima smacks him in the head. In this case, it’s established that Adachi doesn’t want to be there, yes? It’s the country, it’s hot and it smells like green.

"Ah... Dojima-san..! Why don't we take a break? (...) There really is nothing out here... Is the criminal still even here at all? (...) I wonder if I've passed being a rookie yet. Haha, but this city doesn't even have convenient transportation. I can't go to leisure lands (recreation, amusement parks, arcades, ect.) and head home at all."

Adachi then tries to tell Dojima a story. “when I got to this city after being newly assigned, I met an interesting guy (...) Yeah, I remember that the cherry blossoms haven't bloomed yet. So, I was driving my car and got near the station and--” Dojima gets a phone call.

Adachi politely puts his hands down waiting for his boss to finish so he can finish the story. Again and again, Adachi attempts to talk to Dojima about a story he’s so persistent trying to tell someone about. It was so 面白い that he would find someone to talk to about it. Even being polite and patient enough to wait for a chance to speak. He even gets fed up with it and blows up in front of his boss, clearly irritated he’s not given a chance to talk.

Sure, it could be Adachi feeling fed up like a normal person where someone agreed he to listen to him, before being constantly ignored. Or Adachi trying to be a more annoying whiny brat, depending on where you look at it.

If the story wasn’t too “interesting” to Adachi, he would’ve just brushed it off and stopped talking to Dojima entirely, or start up new small talk, or even complain some more. But no, he had a story he wanted to voice out so bad that he got irritated that the one person in the vicinity couldn’t listen to him.

Only after Dojima told him to continue their investigation elsewhere did Adachi finally stop and focus on something else. Maybe that story was for another day, or maybe it was never meant to be told.

What if it was just original (game) Adachi? He’d find a way to squirrel out of the investigation as usual, or push Dojima to “investigate” elsewhere. “Hey boss, don’t you think it’s hot? Why don’t we go elsewhere? We’ve seen this place too many times to count and I doubt anything new’ll turn up. How about we take a break at Junes, y’know? Where it’s cool? C’mon boss,” something like that.

og Adachi is just really annoying and silly to me. Some grown man thinking he can freeload because he never gets anything out of putting in more energy and effort? I don’t care how tall he is, I will smack him in the head.

Yeah VL Adachi whines, too, but at least it doesn’t look like he’s going to escape and waste his time somewhere else. He just sucks it up stops trying to leave the situation.

Or maybe I’m getting this all wrong and VL is exactly the same and my rage just gets dampened because of Masamisan’s execution of character hmm...

SO. What was his story about anyway? The one he really wanted to share to Dojima?

I mean... it’s obvious enough

First day in town? Spring? Actually mentioned driving a car when literally out of every single persona 4 media at the time was there not a SINGLE mention of Adachi having a car OTHER THAN the same stageplay it’s being mentioned in?

A story, from somewhere around uhh four? five months ago? was something that he remembered so dearly and was willing to share despite it obviously embarrassing him even if he puts the blame on a certain somebody in the same story?

Or maybe it’s because he really had nothing to talk about ever since he realized all his stories from the city weren’t actually that funny or interesting in the first place.

BUT then that would mean out of all the things he could talk about—more whining, complaining, complimenting, small talk—he insisted about talking about this story in particular.

Okay, look. I’m just. Just. As someone who talks too much, of course I have things I actually want people to hear out of all the bullshit that comes out of my mouth. And if the thing I actually want people to listen to doesn’t even get heard, I’d go mad.

Sure, Adachi’d be fine when his complaints or intentionally unfunny jokes get brushed off. But a story of a guy that he thought was so funny, interesting, 面白い gets ignored, he really blew up, even just for a split second, maybe.

And ALL the things that happened in that story—on his first day in Inaba! His car got dented, he had to deal with a weirdo dumbass employee that knew zero personal space, yelled in his ear, who didn’t know how to do their job, got his station reputation messed up on the first day, got his ass grabbed, got (unintentionally?) mocked for his lame stories, and got his car dented for the SECOND time. Probably MORE

And he STILL wanted to talk about it /punches through concrete wall/

This little tidbit of VL Adachi kinda makes me go insane sometimes—his entire characterization in VL in particular. It was really refreshing to see and how they included both of his characters in it, his facade and how irritated he is of a lot of things underneath. And how flexible his character is immediately working with other characters when there’s sudden improv to balance the situation. Like him and Dojima, Morooka, the attendant, or even Yuuya (hero) himself.

I’ll take Taniguchi-san’s messing around in the VL bonus backstage disc in place of Masami-san being so busy he couldn’t appear in it as often as other characters.

For stagetime that lasted for fifteen minutes or less, my appreciation for VL Adachi, even if he was just comic relief, really rocketed. I say VL, bc Adachi the edgelord he’s supposed to be in literally every other media is something I analyze separately.

I haven’t even gotten to VLE oh my GODDDDD

Like I said, I don’t really regard VLE close to canon but as something to be appreciated for what it is by itself. But the way Adachi was characterized there, in or out of character, still struck me.

Yes, there was his strange fan-agreed-canon which is,,, now canon obsession with cabbages (not that that’s a bad thing lmao). There was also him being a lot more jumpy and intimate in a clowny way, patting people on the shoulder or even downright hugging them just to mess around. Even FORGETTING who the same goddam loser who grabbed his ass almost a year ago is. But like, can’t blame him they literally changed their actor (and screenplay writer) AHAHAHA

ha... no more comedy, only dorky sword fights now

(speaking of sword fights I think it’s a fun thought how Mamiya-san [Izanami, also one of the youngest in the cast] admitted it was his first time doing sword fight choreography and even thanked Masami-san and other staff members for guiding him)

One thing unintentionally in character was Adachi accidentally nabbing the sushi overdosed in wasabi. Masami-san didn’t actually account for a joke sushi and didn’t immediately eat it—until Taniguchi-san (who also made Dojima go off his shits compared to VL) jokingly yelled at him and even riled up the audience for him to eat it. He even went off stage to get water just for him to eat the goddam sushi.

And Masami-san did! (kinda choked, but he’s fine).

Continuing from the same scene, while being overly giddy about sushi dinner (and I mean overly--he was singing about it while hopping to the Dojima residence), he tried to remind the two, Dojima and Hayato (hero), that Nanako was sleeping. Probably where she was sick if the scene was translated from the game.

And... the dramatic parts of VLE

Adachi was the one who reported to the IT that Dojima was chasing Namatame in the rain. While Naoto was discussing Namatame’s journal entries, Adachi, as giddy as he is, took it from Naoto’s hands and reveled in the discovery of evidence so childishly(?). He even ran to Dojima when he began regaining consciousness and immediately called the nurses to help him wheel Dojima to the ER.

Then, The Hospital Scene™️, right after Nanako flatlines.

Adachi, who recently walked into the scene, immediately worries about Dojima and IT who were ALL crying. He looks down, devastated—before yelling how Dojima’s heading to Namatame’s room.

He yells in terror and the same grief at his injured boss, all while running past and even jumping over children, who fell to the ground sobbing, to get to him. He continues yelling in a pained fashion while immediately reprimanding Dojima to stop. He gets carried by the collar before being tossed to the ground at Hayato’s feet, all while being pat by the same boy.

Dojima makes his speech about how unfair it is for the ‘killer’ to be alive when his daughter isn’t. When he finally falls to his knees, Adachi rises from the ground, humbly saying he’ll do his best to take care of Dojima (or something like that I’m in tears I literally can’t do VLE’s hospital scene i h8 this). He finally starts crying along with everyone else, being pushed away again but still tries again, trying to usher his boss away from the door.

With the help of the guard in front of the door, they all disappear off stage

please... I know this scene doesn’t need that much translation because of how important this scene is in the entire story. and I know my narratives aren’t enough so just,,,, just watch it please it’s so much more than this. everyone’s acting was just spectacular

OK!!! Yes I was gushing abt Masami-san again back to Adachi.

It’s portrayed that while not being afraid to admit his crimes, he also goes out of his way to be a bastard and have the gall to get a bunch of kids to fight him, one on eight. He can use a katana, probably a narrative dark reflection of the hero, Hayato which I thought was nice—and he can fight!!! It also shows his persona, yes, but...it doesn’t make it clear if he’s overwhelmed by his Shadow like in the game, where his eyes were yellow and he was emitting a dark aura.

But it gets interesting how he sees he’s getting overwhelmed and starting to lose his edge towards a bunch of kids. He falls to the ground even banging the floor like a whiny brat while literally the IT tries to tell him to turn himself in. Again, like a brat he tells everyone to shut up—before getting incapacitated. While some of the IT rejoice, he bolts up unaccepting of his defeat—before getting hit in the stomach.

There’s an electronic hum from the dresser, you only have a few moments to fix yourself. The mirrored surface is swept away by the display interface of an EAC agent. It reminds you of Minority Report; one of the few non-Mission Impossible movies you adore because it has Tom Cruise. Yes, maybe it was Minority Report that made you want to work for EAC. The Boss’s voice comes in, polite but betraying a mild impatience, “How are you getting along, Nagisa?”

Hearing Boss's voice call your alias switches you into work mode, your posture stiffens.

“The same as usual, all going according to plan.” Your reply is automatic, like your muscle memory, it’s part of your routine.

“Well, I’m happy to hear that, last night was a lot of fun.”

Your mind wanders, thinking about the woman he was dancing with. Did he go home with her?

The Boss continues, “I almost can't believe how quickly you completed your mission. You never fail to impress me.” You detect a hint of sarcasm at the end.

This is not our Alpha. He is jealous.

These thoughts are not helping. Usually your hindbrain is leashed after heat, but it’s stubbornly keeping part of your attention. Reminding you that there is an Alpha who wants you to burn for him. You are thankful for being exhausted enough to leave a towel on your vanity seat. The Boss clears his throat. Oh shit, you’re expected to respond.

You manage to get out, “Thanks, I couldn't have done it without you, Boss.”

It was honestly sheer dumb luck you got it so fast. Remembering his touch gets your heart racing. Remembering you didn't have control boils your blood.

But we met Alpha. Alpha will take care of us.

No, you think, you should use your frustration at your unusual lack of control during the mission to reign in your rebelling hindbrain. That inner voice quiets again, for now.

The Boss continues, “I collected more information on Mr. Soejima, I'm sending it to you now.”

Kei Soejima’s curriculum vitae appears on your monitor. He went to Oxford. Still doesn’t explain how an Englishman ended up with a Japanese name. Oh, his family name is Romley. Huh.

“He is descended from a line of English nobility. His grandfather is an Earl. Earl Romley is a powerful figure who owns some of the most valuable land in England. Mr. Soejima is following in his footsteps. He's a special diplomat working for the British Embassy.”

You have your own ideas about long-time diplomats, and remember the feel of his strong arms. He must work out a lot despite being a diplomat.

Your mouth races ahead of your brain. “Does he have any enemies?”

The Boss frowns slightly. “That's the strange part, he doesn't seem to have any enemies to speak of.”

That explanation feels odd. He's an Alpha. Alphas make enemies everywhere. They literally can’t help it. He definitely didn’t smell like he was suppressed.

Your employer continues, “He's an influential man not only in Europe, but around the world. He helps out with his family's foundation in addition to being a diplomat.”

It’s your turn to frown. “It sounds like he's... perfect? Literally, too good to be true. There has to be some reason he's one of our targets, Boss.”

Any excuse to drop this case. You silently plead with the universe to give you a break.

He continues in a lower pitch, “This is off the record, but there's a snap election coming up - parliament is being dissolved ahead of time and obviously the prime minister position will be in play. Given that's just around the corner, why is he in Japan on unofficial business? Your next job is to monitor him and find out why he is here. Perhaps ascertain whether or not he has political ambitions.”

Inwardly you groan. Your heat only ended this morning. Being around that Alpha is likely to awaken it again. Okay, you don't have to steal any information or prove wrongdoing. That's a plus. You look down at your planner while replying.

“Understood, I already have his contact information, I sent it to you earlier this afternoon,” You look up to see him nodding, “I've already been invited to afternoon tea hosted by Mr. Soejima. I'll work on getting closer to him there.”

This is what you’re known for, and he gives you a smile. “Impressive, you've already made arrangements with Mr. Soejima… I knew I could count on you.”

You used to live for compliments like this from the Boss, but it doesn't give you the glow you used to get. He only asks you to do one thing after all: be an excellent agent. And now it’s simply what is expected because in many cases, you have arrived. A long time ago.

“Sounds like you're well on your way to success as usual. Mr. Soejima was quite taken with you.”

Your heart rate quickens involuntarily. Oh dear. His spicy, woodsy scent lingers in your mind, as well as the only warmth he had -- the warmth of his lips on yours.

“...What makes you say that?” Smooth… just barely saving face while your mind was racing.

“You looked like you were enjoying...the dance with him.” His pause to watch for your reaction offends you. You are a professional.

You scoff, "I better have. It was part of my job to make it seem like I am having fun. You were the one who taught me that.”

He doesn't sound convinced. “Just a part of your job? Hmm. I wonder if that's the whole story. There were times when you weren't even looking at me.”

He is jealous because we found our Alpha and he knows it.

Oh, was he jealous? You feel a little relieved he was keeping an eye on you, but now you wonder about his intentions. Maybe he saw you had a crush on him previously. Maybe this was why he insisted on having you, despite marking your calendar for private time to deal with your heat, to perform this mission. Disgust rises in your core.

“I wouldn't have let him touch me if it weren't for the mission,” you hiss.

“I'll believe you this time. Just be careful prince charming doesn't sweep you off your feet. I'll be looking forward to your success.”

His smile seems genuine, but you know this is a test of your loyalty. Same old song. Same old routine. There’s only ever one correct answer.

“I won't let you down.” He ends the call.

You sigh. Being tense at the start of the mission is normal. You're just edgy staying at home. Especially when the dress you wore the night before still smells like him. You even used his lingering scent to help you get off during your heat. Now that the smell has mostly worn off, and your heat is over, you are eager to scrub the rest of his scent from your memory.

While there may not be as much obvious danger, you remind yourself that you'll need to stay on your guard. Soejima is an Alpha, and your Omega reacted very strongly to his scent. Suddenly, his smile invades your mind. It’s upstanding and refined, but there's darkness underneath.

Was it just your imagination? You're unsure if you want to see it. You’re going to have to keep close to Mr. Soejima and his associates to gather as much information as you can at Raven Resort.

You take a deep sigh. Well, at least you still have most of that tub of your beloved Lady Borden French Vanilla to polish off. You walk out to your living room and decide that you need to spend some time centering and getting your id back under control. Preferring to disassociate by having a movie marathon, you know the perfect man to get your mind off of Prince Charming incarnate. Waving your arm across your DVD collection you stop on Minority Report. Time to put it in and get comfortable.---It’s the weekend, and you make sure to dress far more conservatively than you did for the masquerade, an off-white lace dress with a high collar and three-quarter sleeves. The pencil shaped skirt of the garment comes down to your knees, but it does hug your curves. You’re ever aware that part of you hopes he’ll like it.

You step into the hotel lobby at agreed-upon time, and you see Soejima is already there, waiting. Seems like he always has his own bubble, separating him from the crowd. There’s no hint of the devilishness he displayed at party. You start wondering if you imagined it. The Boss’s warning echoing in your brain - he may look like prince charming, but you’re sure you’re prepared this time.

You want his attention, on your terms. You turn towards him, taking a step and loudly clicking your heels on the floor. He immediately notices the noise and spots you. His eyes widen in recognition and he breaks out into a gentle, welcoming smile. It's only the second time you’ve met. Mirroring facial expressions will make him feel closer to you. You smile back. He maintains eye contact as he walks to you. It doesn’t feel quite the same as it did at the party. Back then, he was a predator stalking an easy kill. Now, he is a living embodiment of charm. But his eyes darken, drawing you into their warm depths. You curse at yourself for falling for those damn eyes again. Time for grounding your senses. You’re wearing work perfume with suppressants. Your comm device is in your ear. You’re insistent that today will go by your terms today. His steady pace toward you is producing an almost hypnotic rhythm. You struggle with trying to ignore the smoke and spice of his scent.

“I’m so glad you would make it, Nagisa.” His voice sends gentle rumbles straight to your core.You bow deeply and reply, “Thanks again for the other night.”

“Don’t mention it. And if I may say…” He takes the opportunity to look you up and down. “You look absolutely stunning.”

A blush crawls across your cheeks. No mask to hide it today.

He takes your hand and brings it to his lips, “No matter how bewitching the mask, it's just an unnecessary decoration on a woman like you.”

Your hand slips from his cold grip as you reply, “You’re too kind. By the way, thank you for inviting me today.”

He smiles. “You’re a welcome addition to our little get together. Now if you’ll come this way...”

 He directs you to an elevator that goes directly to the upper floors. Although he makes no further contact, it nonetheless feels like he is escorting you on his arm. The perfect gentleman. You think back to your intel -- he owns the floor where he’s hosting the afternoon tea. Considering the masquerade, you brace yourself for this being far beyond the average get-together. You have no idea what to expect, and Soejima doesn’t seem keen on letting go of all his mysteries. You wonder if you can peel off his Prince Charming veneer and expose him for who he really is. Overcome with a feeling of exhilaration, you step on to the elevator with him.

Bruce

Despite both being men, you two remind Gotham of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

This was unwise. He leaves it as is until there’s no more room.

Has an addiction to online gaming. He doesn’t know it, but you are his biggest rival online.

Because he always tells you “just one more round” or “until I lose”

So two hours later, when he still hasn’t logged off, you log on and grief him until he rage quits.

Then you console him as he complains to you, and you suggest he take a break from the game for a while.

You wonder sometimes if this can be classified as emotional torture.

Skyrim/General Fantasy OC Ideation: Tamitayo’s Buddies

I’ve mentioned before, I think, that one of my signature OCs (Tamitayo the dark elf/black dragon in a dark elf form) is actually based on the character I played in some of my Skyrim playthroughs that I got particularly attached to; after doing runs as an orc and argonian, my dunmer playthrough got particularly appealing to me because of the narrative resonance of a nord prophecy heroine being one of the dark elves so oppressed and mistreated in Skyrim, and a personality of sorts emerged in my playthroughs as well.

however, while a lot of Tamitayo’s personality and abilities are a direct translation of my time playing in Skyrim, not all of them are. Put simply, I like to do a little bit of everything in Skyrim, from being a combat monster, to a deadly spell apocalypse, to a werewolf/vampire lord hybrid, and do it all REALLY well. an undead summoning, spell-slinging, deadly warrior who excells at pretty much whatever i currently find the most fun to play. while that’s good for gameplay, it translates pretty poorly into a written narrative; a character who is good at everything, while fun in a powergaming way, lacks narrative hooks to really figure them out or come up with ideas for how they typically perform.

So, and I have done some ideas with this in the past that haven’t really gone anywhere, my idea was (and still is) to split up my preferences in gameplay into several characters, with their roots in the Elder Scrolls setting, but designed so that they can be adjusted to fit other settings as needed; D&D, my sci fi fantasy AUs, and whatever else feels right.

In rough order:

Tamitayo: The most established of these characters, she’s a spellsword barbarian type; in TES setting, she’s a dark elf from a fairly obscure sub-culture within Morrowind’s outer reaches and is an outsider to established Imperial culture. Short-spoken, terse and very forbidding in demeanor, she’s explicitly based off Conan the barbarian, both in general personaltiy and her world-weary disdain of the civilized world’s own cruelty. She’s, ironically, a sorceress type: she specializes in destructive combat magic, with some more defensive abilities. Probably makes use of Bound weapons, and mainly uses fire/explosive magic. Likely to wear furred robes and make use of armorskin spells (in the form of magical war paint) as her primary protection, but does make use of her family’s traditional malachite armor in times of great need.

Outside of TES, the assumption is that she is actually a noble black dragon who is mostly confined to the form of a dark elf. This may be a matter of some curse she can only temporarily escape, or a matter of preference. Either way, she’s still the same character (And its just taking the implications of being Dragonborn to its logical conclusion). In D&D proper, she’s most likely a druid or, if that’s not elemental destruction enough, a wizard. She’s compelled to establish a territory and defend it, and thus she’s actually something of a benign warlord; finding chaotic territories, defeating rivals and persuading others to be allies, destroying all malicious threats, and establishing herself as a heroic empress over it all.

As a refresher on her appearance, she’s a very tall dark elf (7ft+) with a fit, fairly defined hourglass body; huge hips, massive breasts, and a fair amount of muscle throughout. Her skin is black (with a bit of a blue tint??) and usually covered in magical war paint. She likes to dye her hair, but the exact shade isn’t defined.

Rogha: Based on my more combat-focused playthrough styles, she’s an orc warrior through and through, with an emphasis on being an extremely skilled craftswoman with a powerful knowledge of enchantment. Very much a strategic planner despite seeming to be a meathead; give her time, and she will WRECK YOUR SHIT with gear designed to exploit your weaknesses. Makes heavy use of electrical magic, necromancy for allies and soldiers (recycling the dead is just common sense, she says). Probably a fairly jolly woman, and very polite. A bit of a stickler for being nice, with a bit of a knight templar-ish view on punishing evil. She’s very community minded, and views smashing bad guys as just another job; think something like Bismuth from SU for inspiration.

Narratively, it may make the most sense for her to mainly focus on having abilities that buff her allies (transforming them, making them bigger/stronger) and functioning a bit as a team support who then wrecks the enemies. a total combat monster, who rages and slaughters everything in her way. As an orc, she adjusts pretty well to pretty much any setting that allows for orcs.

Physically, she’s HUGE; my most muscular and amazonian character, she’s not particularly defined but she is extremely bulky and buff, with arms larger than most people’s torsos. Might have a bit of an old school Gaelic warrior vibe in terms of her design, depending on what cultural associations feel the most right for her. (For example, she’d be of Irish descent in my main AUs.) Mega buff and bigger than the other two here by a wide margin. probably uses a lot of weaponized shields or oversized gunswords that shoot like cannons. (Maybe a wereboar, too?)

Raxlila: A combination of my Argonian character, some more subtle character styles i didn’t actually use but find interesting for narrative ideas, and some vague ideas from WAY back of a dinosaur girl OC. She’s based on some more sneaky skill sets: she’s an alchemist brewing up potions for any conceivable situation, an archer who takes out armored foes from afar (and probably uses crossbows; automatic crossbows and similar weapons, in less TES-canon set ups), makes a lot of use of stealth and acrobatic dodging, and prefers lighter armor. She can makes use of illusion magic (invisiblity, messing with people’s minds), and is also a skilled healer. She’s interested in summoning, but only the theory, and she is also fairly good at using ice magic for combat.

Very fast (Despite her considerable curves, she can get a LOT of velocity in her leaps), she’s a rather indirect and tricksy person; she’s great at fooling people and pulling off diplomacy and schemes in equal turn, and prides herself on walking into pretty much wherever she wants. Tall but not unusually so, she has more crocodilian traits (though she’s more feathery than most argonians, otherwise) and prefers things wet: she’s VERY curvy and thickset, edging a bit towards an overall broad body, though her huge boobs make her look hyper all over.

I have this idea that she doesn’t cast spells; she distills spells in advance as potions, powders and other one-use effects, or works them into special gadgets she can reuse; explosive arrows that create a freezing effect may be a common tool. She’s not making healing potions, but distilled restoration spells. in more sci-fi scenarios, she may be a gadgeteer who specializes in weapon systems, and is generally more about theory; she’s able to do the manual work of putting them together, but it involves a LOT of trial and error, and she works best with people to handle that on her behalf.

Hey @tulipsandsake, I’m your @bering-and-wells-exchange person. I saw you reblog D&D and Critical Role stuff, so I thought I’d do designs for Myka and Helena as D&D characters. Helena is a half-Drow multiclass Bard (College of Glamour)/Artificer (Battle Smith), while Myka is an old-school (2e/AD&D/Baldur’s Gate era) human dual Kensai->Mage. (I don’t have races/subclasses for everyone, but Artie is a college of lore bard, Claudia is an Artificer, Pete is a fighter, and I’m not sure what Leena is). Helena is very much a “seduce anything that moves” ~D&D Bard~, while Artie is very much not - he leans hard into the collection of lore/jack of all trades angle, and while he can play music very well he borders on anti-social. This is the source of some of the tension between them, with his distrust for her Drow parentage occupying most of the rest.

At this point I’m going interrupt to give a blanket apology if I explain something you already know - it’s hard to judge knowledge levels with a gift exchange without ruining the surprise, so I’m going to err on the side of explaining things just in case.

Helena is a bard to capture the importance of her novels, but novel-writing isn't the most practical in a fight or as a live performance, so I gave her an instrument. I chose the hurdy-gurdy, which is a (real) instrument with a very silly name. I picked it because it is very complex and mechanical, like something she might have invented or cobbled together. It’s kind of like an automatic violin or fiddle - rather than being plucked or bowed, a crank on the side is rotated, which moves a wheel across the strings. Rather than frets there are keys which hold the strings at certain points when pressed. There are also “drone” strings, which play a given note (that can be adjusted using a tuning peg) whenever the wheel is turned. You can technically “play” a drone string by holding a sting as if a guitar string as the wheel turns, but that isn’t traditional. Both drone and melody strings can be adjusted using tuning pegs, and apparently you can adjust the exact note the keys play. Some hurdy-gurdys (but not Helena's) also have additional strings not played by the wheel that can be played like a guitar. Hurdy-gurdys do not have much standardization, and the number/presence of all the different kinds of strings can vary.

Helena's bard college I went back and forth with - the college of glamour is about charming, as in the magic, which does suit her, but the college of lore would also be good. Ultimately I decided that college of lore would be better for Artie. Battle Smith, her artificer specialization, I kind of chose to make the character a little more practical to play - artillerist might have suited her character a touch more, but not too much more, and the battle smith's ability to use intelligence for (magic) weapon attacks/damage reduces the important stats to two (int and cha) rather than three (adding str or dex for weapon rolls). Helena's Steel Defender is Dickens the Mechanical Cat, and he can turn the crank for the hurdy-gurdy, letting her play it with one hand.

I don't have her backstory completely pinned down; I feel like her Drow parent escaped to the surface rather than being a functioning member of Drow society, if only to reduce the sketchiness of the alternative method of conception. Christina is definitely a valid "reason for adventuring", but Endless Wonder or fleeing the consequences of a lab accident or charm spell wearing off are also possibilities.

In terms of the illustration itself, I tried to balance bard flamboyance, artificer practicality with a touch of mad science, and Helena's canonical slightly Victorian elegance. I definitely needed the fancy bard hat, because I am of the firm belief that every bard needs a fancy hat. She's wearing a cute pair of overalls (and I now have "stylish overalls" in my google search history), but they got covered by Dickens :( . With the more muted browns inspired by the artificer half as well as her canon style, she was looking a little drab for a bard, so I added a little cape. In terms of skin/hair/eyes and being half-Drow my thoughts were kind of: leaning in to the purplish/blue/lavender skin thing some illustrations of Drow have, because between the inherent problems of the evil elves having black skin and wanting to stay fifty feet away from anything that might come close to being a race-bend I wasn't going to deal with having her skin be darker. I think it turned out OK? For some reason Helena's eye color is significant to me, so they stayed brown rather than Drow purple or something, though they wound up a bit brighter thanks to my attempts to add a little purple. Jaime Murray's hair is iconic, but more for its smoothness and luster than its color, so I was fine making it white as long as I kept the style. The hurdy-gurdy was a bit of a nightmare (twice over, since I had to ink it), which isn't surprising - I kind of cursed myself with that instrument choice, but it was so perfect ;_; . In general, and especially in comparison with Myka, Helena's illustration fought me the whole way down. If you watch the time-lapse, you can see some of the references I used, but far from all - I streamed so much hurdy-gurdy playing youtube is still confused, and the pose went through some shenanigans.

Now, to Myka. Thinking of her pre-med before pre-law before secret service vaguely remembered quote, I thought of the old Baldur's Gate fighter(kensai)->mage cheese build, and thought it might be a good way to capture that simultaneous indecision and discipline/intelligence.

Going very briefly into Baldur's Gate/2e: Kensai, in BG, is a Fighter kit. Kits, in BG and 2e both, are a little like specializations in 5e, in that they are a kind of further customization beyond the class itself. The difference is, not every character has a kit - there is a base class (fighter) and a kit is a set of trade-offs, taking away base class features in exchange for various benefits. So fighter, the base kit, is pretty similar to the fighter in other editions - good at using weapons and armor and attacking a lot. Can equip the best stuff, and use it well, but doesn't get a lot of bonuses apart from that of equipment. Kensai (in BG), on the other hand, trades the ability to wear armor (and use non-thrown ranged weapons) for scaling bonuses to to-hit and damage (abstracting some things for you), and a minor one-time bonus to natural armor, as well as the Kai ability, which temporarily maxes out damage on successful attacks, usable a few times a day, depending on class level. In short, they trade off the armor portions of the Fighter class for additional weapon bonuses.

In Baldur's Gate, if you want to build a dual fighter/wizard, kensai is a great pick for kit, since wizards can't cast in armor anyway, but they can cast spells to boost their AC, mitigating some of the disadvantage of the kit. Mage is a base class and basically what would be called a wizard in later editions. Mage kits, with the exception of wild mage (in BG), which is a whole thing I won't get into, are pretty much picking a school to specialize in - they get bonuses to spells of that school, but there is an "opposing" school which they can't use at all. I wouldn't be terribly interested in those specializations even if I could use them for Myka, but I couldn't, because of how dual-classing works.

Dual-classing in BG and 2e is one of two methods to have more than one class on a character. Which one you can do depends on your race (as does a lot of things in 2e). If you're human, you dual-class; if you're not, you multi-class. Multi-class characters are more what you'd expect from multi-classing in other editions - you have two classes, you gain levels in both. There are differences (exp is divided evenly between classes, rather than choosing what to level, class and combination restrictions), but most relevantly, you can't use any kits with multi-class characters. So, we want to dual-class, not multi-class, so that Myka can use the Kensai (BG) kit, which makes her human, which is fine.

Dual-classing, compared to multi-classing, is weird. Basically, you start off in one class, with a kit if you like, and level normally in that class/kit until you decide to switch, at which point you are done with the first class and can't level in it anymore. Then you *start over* in your new class (which cannot have a kit), as if you were a level one character in that class, without (effectively) the ability to use anything from the previous class (except hp). This continues until the number of levels in the second class exceeds that of the levels in the first class, at which point the character regains all the qualities and abilities of their first class. Dual classes can wind up quite powerful, but they require both planning and a willingness to be weaker for a time to be more powerful later (which I feel suit Myka well - she's a planner and has the patience and discipline to accept temporary weakness to be stronger later). So, given that we want to use the Kensai (BG) kit, Myka needs to start with it, and then switch to mage later, since the second class can't have a kit.

At this point I want to clarify why I keep specifying Baldur's Gate and/or D&D 2e for things. Turns out, Baldur's Gate does use D&D 2e as a base, but makes some modifications. One of the changes it makes, which I didn't know when I started this, is the Kensai kit itself. Kensai is not officially a 2e kit, and technically isn't in 2e at all. There is a (fighter-ish) class in the "Oriental Adventures" book for first edition, but it isn't quite the same, more it's own class that happens to share some tables with fighter. Since the end goal is character design, not creating a legal 2e character, I won't go too far into it, but I did create both a (cheated to level up) Baldur's Gate kensai -> mage and a (1e-ish)Kensai->(2e)Mage, using the rules from 2e for most things not directly in the Kensai class description (and ignoring the stat requirements for dual-classing since I didn't roll any 17s); screenshots of both should be in the supplemental reblog, in addition to a link to Helena's dndbeyond character sheet.

Fortunately for me and my lack of foresight, both BG Kensai and 1/2e Kensai have similar flavor: a heavily "eastern" inspired warrior with even more discipline and asceticism than standard fighters, focused on their weapons and unable to wear armor, with a restriction to either lawful (1/2e) or at least not chaotic (BG) alignments (if this sounds a little monk-ish WotC agrees - kensai is a monk specialization in 5e, being a monk that can use a not-monk weapon). Also fortunately for me, mage is wizard is mage, regardless of edition. Magic from book learning/intelligence. Not too complicated.

In terms of character narrative, in canon, I feel like coming to the Warehouse was a significant breakpoint in Myka's life and worldview. Not being a writer, this small essay notwithstanding, I'm going to sum it up as a break from tradition and from seeking the approval of her father. Where joining the Warehouse crew was for canon Myka, I want dualing from Kensai to Mage to be for DnD Myka, with reaching the point where she can use Kensai features again representing the peace with her past she eventually reaches at the warehouse in canon. What I'm picturing is: Myka is from an isolated and very traditional mountain village where the kensai tradition (and 2e mechanics) has been preserved. Myka is trained in this tradition, and has both the mental discipline and physical capabilities to excel. The people of this village are purists and don't believe in using magic, especially in conjunction with being a kensai. Somehow (at this point my having thought this through starts to fail) Myka gets ahold of some spellbooks, and with her love of books and curiosity, begins to read and reread them, until one day she casts some magic. This is against the rules, and she's kicked out of the village for "corrupting" their traditions, and now she has to make her way through the world with only her fledgling mage talent to rely on.

Talking about the illustration/design itself: given the heavily eastern vibe, I'm trying for a samurai/ronin style based on my recollections from my weeb phase. I wanted in particular with the robe/kimono to make something that would be in between the plain practicality of Myka's kensai kimono and the flashiness of wizard robes (if you watch the timelapse, you may spot the part where I accidentally took a left turn into fallout's vault boy coloration before tweaking it a bit). I also wanted to have her using magic, and I think the magic effect turned out well. Really, this illustration just came out really easy. I was just … drawing hands. If you watch the timelapse, I even saved a third hand for a while because it was so nice (but at the wrong angle). I don't know what happened. Really the only snags were the aforementioned Vault Boy Moment and coloring Myka's hair (although I did decide to leave her face as a sketch rather than try to ink it).

Charlatan (Homebrew Hybrid Class for Pathfinder 1st Edition)

"Thieves, bullies, cowards, cads, creeps, and general nogoodniks! Charlatan's are typically motivated by a desire to profit by any means necessary. Though not inherently wicked people, it's not hard for a charlatan to fall into sin due to their boorish lifestyles and lecherous means of achieving success. To the Charlatan, subverting the law and defying public notions of etiquette and good-taste are virtues unto themselves, and they will paradoxically go to absurd lengths to get out of doing hard work. But be warned, while a charlatan may seem like a wretched bufoon to some eyes, there's no denying the relentless fervor by which they ply their trade."

Role: Charlatans are irreverant schemers and dedicated professional criminals who are just as likely to be a nuisance to their party as to be a benefit. Their most useful capacity is their ability to set goals for themselves and the party and having the tools to see them brought to fruition.

Alignment: Any non Lawful and non Good. A charlatan need not be a heartless villain, and he sure isn't a righteous hero, but he is definitely not an upstanding citizen.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Charlatan is proficient with all simple weapons, as well as a number of martial and/or exotic weapons equal to twice his intelligence modifier, chosen at 1st level. He is not proficient in armor or shields.

Luck (Ex): Charlatans live their lives by the skin of their teeth, always chasing their next caper. If not for their amazing streaks of luck, they might not be nearly as successful as they are. At the start of the day, the Charlatan's pool of luck points is equal to his charisma modifier (minimum 1). This pool fluctuates throughout the day but never exceeds his charisma modifier (minimum 1), though feats and magic items may affect this maximum.

These luck points function similarly too and stack with grit and panache points, however, the Charlatan has his own means of regaining luck:

Accomplish a Daily Goal: See "Master Plan" below.

Best a Worthy Foe: Whenever the Charlatan would kill or otherwise soundly defeat an enemy who's total hit dice are greater than the Charlatan's own, he gains 2 luck points. Consult with the GM to decide what constitutes a "sound defeat".

Bullying: Whenever the Charlatan successfully performs a Bull Rush, Dirty Trick, Disarm, Drag, Grapple, Repostion, Steal, or Sunder combat maneuver against a creature that has fewer hit dice or otherwise a smaller size category than him; he gains 1 luck point.

Commit a Daring Crime: Whenever the Charlatan successfully commits an especially difficult crime, such as robbing a noble blind or scamming an entire town, he regains his full luck pool.

Compulsive Liar: Whenever the Charlatan succeeds a Bluff check by 5 or more, he gains 1 luck.

Gloat to the Enemy: Whenever the Charalatan spends at least 10 minutes explaining his current or future plans and/or bragging about his skills, secrets, or personal history to an enemy; he gains 2 luck. If the information espoused would be especially harmful to the Charlatan for the enemy to know, the gm may allow the Charlatan to instead gain 4 luck.

Leave For Dead: Whenever the Charlatan would leave a living enemy unattended in a situation in which they are likely to die, he gains 1 luck point. This is an evil act.

Repugnant Behavior: Whenever the Charlatan causes a creature to become frightened, nauseated, panicked, shaken, sickened, or otherwise directly cause it's attitude to shift at least one step towards hostile; he gains 1 luck point.

Selfishness: Whenever it would serve to further the Charlatan's agenda, he may commit a self-serving act at another creature's expense to gain 1 luck point.

Unchecked Avarice: Whenever the Charlatan steals anything worth 10 gp or more with the intent to keep it, he gains a luck point. He gains 1 additional luck point if the stolen goods were in another unwilling creature's possession.

Master Plan (Ex): Though the Charlatan can be manic and short-sighted in most cases, he possesses a talent for labyrinthine schemes. At 1st level, the Charlatan gains Brilliant Planner as a bonus feat, he does not need to meet it's prerequisites. The Charlatan may spend any ammount of luck in place of 50 gp (per each point of luck spent) for the brilliant plan fund. Furthermore, the Charlatan's maximum brilliant plan fund is equal to either 75 gp × his Charlatan Level or as listed in the feat, whichever is better. At 10th level, the Charlatan may produce an item of any size and weight with his brilliant plan, if the item would be heavier than the Charlatan's medium load carrying capacity, he will need to expend additional money from the brilliant plan fund to have it transported to him.

At 2nd level, the Charlatan improves his chances for success by carefully deciding his objectives. At the beginning of each day, the Charlatan may set a number of goals for the day equal to his wisdom modifier. These goals can be any task that the Charlatan could conceivably complete within a day, but must be tasks that require a suitable ammount of effort to complete (breathing and eating are not suitable goals), a goal also should not be something that would be an expected consequence of completing another goal. The GM has final say on what is or is not a valid goal. Whenever the Charlatan accomplishes one of his goals for that day, he gains 2 luck points. Once that goal has been accomplished, the Charlatan can no longer recieve luck points for accomplishing the same goal multiple times in the same day. Any unaccomplished goals the Charlatan has by the end of the day are wasted, but may be set as goals for a later day if desired.

Dirty Deeds (Ex): Starting at 1st level, like gunslingers and swashbucklers, the Charlatan can utilize his luck to perform extraordinary deeds of daring mischief:

Eye For Opportunity (Ex): At 1st level, so long as the Charlatan has at least 1 point in his luck pool, he may take 20 on all Appraise checks, Knowledge checks that he is trained in, Perception checks, and Sense Motive checks.

Obscene Personality (Ex): At 1st level, so long as the Charlatan has at least 1 point in his luck pool; he may cause the targets of failed Charisma checks to become sickened for 1 round per 2 charlatan levels.

Smoothtalker (Ex): At 1st level; the Charlatan may, as a swift action, spend 1 luck point to add either his intelligence modifier or wisdom modifier to any one charisma skill check.

Audacious Caper (Ex): At 6th level, the Charlatan may spend a number of luck points as a standard action to gain the benefits of the Aura of the Unremarkable spell for 1 minute per point of luck spent. The save DC is charisma based.

Getaway (Ex): At 6th level, the Charlatan gains a competance bonus equal to the number of points currently in his luck pool that is added to his AC, his CMD, his drive checks, and the following skill checks: Acrobatics, Climb, Escape Artist, Fly, Ride, Stealth, and Swim. Furthermore the Charlatan may, as a free action, spend 1 point of luck to gain a +5 ft bonus to all of his movement speeds while fleeing from pursuers. This bonus is lost after 1 minute unless the Charlatan spends additional luck points.

Scapegoat (Ex): At 6th level, whenever the Charlatan would try to deflect blame for his own crimes or mischief onto another creature, he may spend 3 luck to automatically succeed the resulting bluff check. He cannot regain luck points through this bluff check. The Charlatan will have no more than 1 hour per 5 charlatan levels before the targets of the bluff check make a DC 15 Will saving throw to realise they've been decieved. Creatures decieved this way cannot be affected by this ability again for 24 hours.

Flexible Talents (Ex): At 9th level; the Charlatan may, as a swift action, spend 3 luck points to gain the benefits of one charlatan talent he does not have and that he also meets the prerequisites for 1 minute. The Charlatan can only benefit from one talent this way. At the 12th, 15th, and 18th levels; he may gain the benefits of an additional talent.

Insidious Trap (Ex): At 9th level, the Charlatan may spend 2 luck points to set any one extraordinary ranger trap. The Charlatan can only have a total number of traps set at one time this way equal to his wisdom modifier.

Backstabbing (Ex): At 12 level, so long as there is 1 point in his luck pool, the Charlatan has the ability to perform 1d6 sneak attacks as a rogue. He may spend luck points as a free action to add an additional 1d6 per luck point spent to the next sneak attack he performs that round.

Menacing Laugh (Ex): At 12th level, the Charlatan can spend 1 luck point, laugh maniacally, and affect all living creatures within a 30-foot-radius as if they were subject to the fear spell. The DC of this effect is equal to 10 + 1/2 the Charlatan’s level + the Charlatan’s charisma modifier.

Evasive (Ex): At 15th level, while the Charlatan has at least 1 luck point, he gains the benefit of the evasion, uncanny dodge, and improved uncanny dodge rogue class features. He uses his charlatan level as his rogue level for improved uncanny dodge.

Cheat Death (Ex): At 18th level, whenever the Charlatan is reduced to 0 hit points or fewer, he can spend all of his remaining luck to instead be reduced to 1 hit point. He must have at least 1 luck point to spend. Effects that kill the Charlatan outright without dealing hit point damage are not affected by this ability.

Charlatan Talents (Ex): The Charlatan is figure of many talents. At 1st level and every level after, he gains a talent from the following list. Unless noted, each talent can only be taken once.:

Black-Hearted (Ex): The Charlatan gains the Dead Inside story feat as a bonus feat, he does not need to meet it's prerequisites. Whenever the Charlatan overcomes an emotion or fear effect, he gains 1 luck point.

Casual Murder (Ex): The Charlatan gains the Innocent Blood story feat as a bonus feat, he does not need to meet the prerequisites. Killing a worthy foe (see Luck) gives the Charlatan 3 luck points instead of 2.

Chew the Scenery (Ex): The Charlatan may spend 1 luck point to add his total bonus in Perform (act) or Perform (oratory) to any one other charisma skill check.

Clever Disguise (Ex): This talent functions as the Seamless Guise vigilante class feature. Only a Charalatan with the Many Guises vigilante social talent may take this talent.

Danger Sense (Ex): This talent functions as the Unchained Rogue class feature of the same name. Only a Charlatan of at least 3rd level may take this talent.

Despicable Odor (Ex): The Charlatan's poor hygiene can be a useful asset. The Charlatan gains the Stench universal monster ability. He uses his charlatan level in place of racial hit dice for the purposes of calculating this ability's DC. Affected creatures are sickened for 1 round per 2 charlatan levels. This ability can be supressed for 24 hours by applying a significant ammount of perfume to the Charlatan or submerging him in at least 40 gallons of water. This talent can only be taken at the 1st, 7th, or 12th levels.

Daring Criminal (Ex): The Charlatan gains one gunslinger/swashbuckler dare. He counts as both a gunslinger and a swashbuckler for this talent's purposes. This talent may be taken multiple times.

Eclectic Education (Ex): The Charlatan gains an additional favored class we he takes this talent. That class' levels count as charlatan levels for the purposes of charlatan abilites and his charlatan levels count as that class' levels for the purposes of it's abilities. This talent can be taken multiple times, choosing a different favored class each time.

Eternal Shame (Ex): The Charlatan gains the Shame story feat as a bonus feat, he does not need to meet the prerequisites. The Charlatan may, once per day, gain 2 luck points whenever he is publicly humiliated in a way that is similar his initial embarrassment or whenever somone mocks him for that embarrassment. This ability persists even after the Charlatan has completed the feat's goal.

Favored Minion (Ex): The Charlatan has specific types of creatures that he prefers to employ and has special empathy for. This talent functions as the the ranger's Favored Enemy class feature. Except the Charlatan also gains the bonus to his diplomacy and intimidate checks. If the Charalatan has the Leadership feat, he also applies that bonus to his leadership score for having followers or a cohort of the chosen type.

Finesse Training (Ex): This talent functions as the Unchained Rogue class feature of the same name. Only a Charlatan of at least 2nd level may take this talent.

Goons (Ex): The Charlatan gains Leadership as a bonus feat, he does not need to meet the prerequisites. His followers can never have an intelligence score higher than half of his own. His cohort is not subject to the same limitation. In addition, he may add his intelligence modifier to his leadership score. The Charlatan can, once per day, permanently remove a penalty to his leadership score that had been incured by his actions that day as if it had never happened. Only a Charlatan of at least 5th level may take this talent.

Investigator Talent (Ex): The Charlatan gains one investigator talent he meets the prerequisites for. Unless he has the Amateur Alchemist talent, the Charlatan cannot take any investigator talent that affects Alchemy or extracts. He also cannot select any talent which affects Studied Strike. Talents that would expend inspiration instead expend luck.

Monster of the Week (Ex): So eager is the Charlatan to get ahead of his foes, he will conscript the aid of powerful and dangerous monsters, though this is a risky gambit. In addition to the other benefits of the Brilliant Planner feat, the Charlatan may gain the services of any one creature. This creature expends money from the brilliant plan fund equal to that creature's CR times 10 (Note that the GM has final say on what is and is not a suitable creature choice). The Charlatan must wait 6d4 days before he can hire another creature this way. Once the creature's services have been aquired, it will do everything in it's power to accomplish the Charlatan's goals for the day (see Master Plan) but otherwise has no strong inclination to follow the Charlatan's commands beyond what it's personality dictates, though the Charalatan can try to control it through other means (bribery, intimidation, deception, etc). Once the day has ended or all the Charlatan's goals for the day have been completed, the creature has no further loyalty to the Charlatan and may turn on him if it so desires. Only a Charlatan of at least 5th level with the Master Plan class feature may take this talent.

Nemesis (Ex): The Charlatan gains the Nemesis story feat as a bonus feat, he does not need to meet the prerequisites. Unlike usual, the nemesis only ever wants to thwart the Charlatan whenever they suspect that he intends to commit a crime or an act of villainy, as such the nemesis is always lawful good.

Once per day, as a free action, the Charlatan may choose for their nemesis to appear in an area within 5 miles of him (the GM decides where and why). Doing so completely replenishes his luck pool.

An ex-charlatan looses the benefit of this talent so long as he remains an ex-charlatan.

Poisoner (Ex): The Charlatan has learned how to handle poisons and cannot accidentally poison himself when applying poison to a weapon. Additionally, he adds his charisma modifier to any knowledge check meant to identify a poison or it's symptoms.

Puppet Master (Ex): The Charlatan gains the Puppet Master story feat as a bonus feat, he does not need to meet the prerequisites. Any creature who makes a deal or contract with the Charlatan must make a Will saving throw before taking any action that would go against the terms of that deal or contract (DC = 10 + 1/2 charlatan level + the Charlatan's wisdom modifier). Failing the save causes the creature to not go through with that action.

Quick Plan (Ex): When preparing his brilliant plan, the Charlatan only needs to spend 4 hours. Additionally, it takes 1 less minute per charlatan level to enact his brilliant plan. If this would reduce the number of minutes to less than 1, the Charlatan instead only needs to take a full-round action to enact his plan. Only a charlatan with the Brilliant Planner feat may take this talent.

Rival (Ex): The Charlatan gains the Rival story feat as a bonus feat. Instead of being a challenging foe; the rival is, in all ways, identical to the Charalatan except that they may be of a different alignment and use different class archetypes than the Charlatan does. The Charlatan should consult with the GM on other differences.

Once per day, as a free action, the Charlatan may choose for their rival to appear in an area within 1 mile of him (the GM decides where and why). Doing so completely replenishes his luck pool.

Rogue Talent (Ex): The Charlatan gains one rogue talent or advanced rogue talent (including those from the unchained rogue) that he meets the prerequisites for when he takes this talent, except for talents that affect sneak attacks, which can only be taken at 12th level or higher. The Charlatan may take this talent multiple times, selecting a different rogue talent each time.

Social Talent (Ex): The Charlatan gains one of the following social talents from the Vigilante class that he meets the prerequisites for. Unless he gains a true vigilante identity from another source, he is always considered to be in both his social and vigilante identities simultaneously: Ancestral Enlightenment, Case the Joint, Celebrity Discount, Celebrity Perks, Double Time, Entrepreneur, Feign Innocence, Gossip Collector, Great Renown, In Vogue, Incredible Renown, Instant Recognition, Intrigue Feats, Loyal Aid, Many Guises, Mockingbird, Renown, Safe House, Social Grace, Triumphant Return, Well-known Expert. If the Charlatan takes the Many Guises talent, his mundane identity requires 1 minute to change into, the can also later select: Any Guise, Everyman, Immediate Change, and Quick Change whever he takes this talent.

Stronghold (Ex): Any building the Charlatan considers his primary base of operations becomes exceedingly difficult for his enemies to penetrate. Ugly Schnook (Ex): The Charlatan's very visage is offensive to most onlookers. The Charlatan gains the Frightful Presense universal monster ability, which he can activate as a free action by spending 2 luck points. Affected creatures are shaken for 2d4 rounds. Any creature with fewer hit dice than the Charlatan who can see the him within 60 ft is affected. The Will DC for this effect is 10 + charlatan level + the Charlatan's charisma modifier. This talent can only be taken at the 1st, 7th, or 12th levels.

Vigilante Talent (Ex): The Charlatan gains one of the following vigilante talents from the Vigilante class that he meets the prerequisites for. Unless he gains a true vigilante identity from another source, he is always considered to be in both his social and vigilante identities simultaneously. He counts as a stalker vigilante for this purpose: Another Day, Blind Spot, Chase Master, Hide in Plain Sight, Inspired Vigilante, Instant Plan, Surprise Strike, Twisting Fear, Unexpected Strike.

This talent can be taken multiple times, selecting a different vigilante talent each time.

Weightless Plan (Ex): The Charlatan is not as encumbered by the weight of his schemes. The weight of the Charlatan's pending brilliant plan is reduced by his charlatan level. Only a charlatan with the Brilliant Planner feat may take this talent.

Ex-Charlatans: If the Charlatan ever becomes lawful or good, he can no longer take charlatan levels until his alignment is once again non lawful and non good. He does, however, retain all Charlatan abilities except as noted.

Criminal Mastermind [optional capstone] (Ex): At 20th level, the Charlatan has perfected his trade and commands great awe and prestige in the seedy underbelly of the world, as well as the fear and ire of the authorities. Creatures who are criminals have a starting attitude two steps closer to helpful than they normally would in regards to the Charlatan. Creatures who's alignment opposes the Charlatan's instead have a starting attitude two steps closer to hostile. Additionally, while in a settlement, he always applies that settlement's Crime modifier to his charisma checks. Vile Villain [optional capstone] (Ex): At 20th level, so long as the Charlatan has an evil alignment, he may spend 1 luck point to take 20 on a d20 roll to perform an inherently evil act.
