A/N: omg wow okay hi guys! So I’ve been planning and working on this for about 2 weeks now and I am finally ready to post it! This is my first ever chapter to my first ever fic! I really hope you guys send me some feedback as I really want to make this a great story for y'all! This first chapter is kind of more of an informational to y/n’s background, but I promise Harry will make his appearance starting next chapter!

One may think living in the South means constantly wiping beads of sweat from your forehead and the sun always shining, but here you were, freezing your ass off while the rain pelted you in the face. Checking your watch for the third time, you swiftly ran across the street, making sure to wave a quick “thank you” to the cars who let you pass. It had been raining for the past six days in Charleston, and it was easy to tell everyone was beginning to move from irritated to borderline insane from being cooped up inside all day everyday. You pushed open the door to Gnome Cafe and shook the excess rain from your umbrella before making your way over to a table in the corner of the room.

         “Sorry I’m late. I was finishing an episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine.” you shrugged, shimmying out of your pink rain jacket and placing it on the back of your chair.

           “At least tell me it was a good one.” Bri rolled her eyes

           “The whole series is good, what do you mean ‘a good one’?” Sav argued while taking a bite of her salad.

           “The one when Hitchcock drank his fish.” You smiled, knowing it was one of Bri’s favorites, “Thanks for ordering for me.” You mumbled around your sandwich while the three girls around you agreed that it was a decent enough episode to be late to lunch for.

           “Okay, onto actual important things; LA.” Bella gleamed while clapping her hands together.

The Four Whores. That’s the name Isabella- Bella, had dubbed your group way back in the eighth grade. Bella’s mom and your mom had been best friends growing up and had gotten pregnant at the same time, consequently resulting in Bella being your best friend since the day you were born. The two of you had met Brianna – Bri, and Savannah – Sav, shortly after at the start of the sixth grade. From then on, the four of you had been inseparable. Constant sleepovers, sharing clothes, going to prom together, and even winning “Best best friends” in your last year of high school. And finally, after 22 years of living in South Carolina, the four of you had finally signed a lease for an apartment in Los Angeles, California.

           “Yes, okay, so…” putting your food back down on the plate, you leaned over to pull manila envelopes out of your black bag and handed them to the girls, “The leasing office sent over all the last minute extra information about the place and we are officially all set to move next week on January 7th.”

A gaggle of cheers was heard around the table and echoed through the small café, causing other patrons to glare in your direction. The four of you had been waiting for this day for what seemed like forever. Sav and Bri were the first ones to suggest the move about two years ago, as they were both fashion majors and thought L.A would be a great place to start their careers. Bella was fortunate enough to come from a family who had money – cumulatively the family had six Law Firms – so moving around for her wasn’t an issue. Making the move out to L.A was a bit for different story for you. Of course, you wanted nothing more than to pack up and start your life with your best friends, but leaving your family was hard. It was well known that out of the four of you, you were the closest to your family, especially your younger sister, Morgan. She was only 2 years younger than you, having just turned 20, and the two of you were incredibly close. She was the person you told everything to, the person you cuddled with on the couch when watching HGTV, she was just your person. So finally making the decision to move across the country was a hard thing to decide. Slightly shaking your head, you rejoined the girls and discussed plans to ship all your belongings out to California and then the conversations merged into any trips you all had coming up after the move.

           “Speaking of upcoming trips, will you please call Nicholas. He texted me 9 times yesterday asking about his stay.”  Sav laughed, signaling to the waitress for our check.

           “That little shit. He literally just booked the flight on Thursday. There’s like a month before he even gets in.” You laughed, shaking your head

Nicholas Grimshaw. It was definitely the oddest friendship you had made throughout your years in college. You were 19 and had somehow ended up at a party in London 3 years ago that he was attending and the Four Whores – more specifically Bella -- had quickly weaseled your way into the VIP section and made friends with the Brit and his gang. And ever since, even though you only got to see him every so often when he was stateside, or you got to London, you both were extremely close. He had called you up one night, unwilling to tell you the reason for his trip into California, but requesting to spend a couple days with you and the girls since “You won’t even know anyone there at that point. You need me to help you socialize.” So, you spoke to the girls and they all agreed it was time to have a visit from good old St. Nick.

           “Well, call him, he’s getting on my last nerve.”

           “Don’t even get me started on last nerves, mom’s been on my case about this move, so I gotta get home and make sure she isn’t having an aneurism.” Sav’s mom had always been a bit weary of the four of us together and most of the decisions we make, so it was no surprise she was voicing her concerns.

           “Yeah, it’s been a pleasure ladies, but I’ve got to get back to work.”

           “Y/N sitting on the couch doesn’t count as going to work you know.” Bri laughed as you all popped your umbrellas and left the small café.

           “Ha-Ha very funny. For your information, I have a phone interview later and have to get my portfolio together to send them.” Sticking your tongue out, and making the girls laugh with excited variations of “Good Luck!” falling from their lips, you all walked your separate ways, back down the wet, cobblestone, streets of downtown Charleston.

           “I just can’t believe you’re actually leavin’ me. It’s like you want me to suffer living here alone with mom and dad.” Morgan moaned

           “I do find it quite interesting you didn’t invite Morg to join the lot of you on this new life journey.” A voice piped up

Morgan was laying on her back, with her head hanging off your bed and had been complaining for the past twenty minutes about having to stay home by herself while you moved across the country. Knowing he would always take her side, Morgan facetimed Nick from your laptop and now here you were, packing your room while being harassed by your sister and a friend 4,000 miles away.

           “Okay, I already get enough of that from her Nicholas, I don’t need it from the peanut gallery too. And you do realize you don’t have to stay here, right Morg? You can move on campus literally anytime you want - Do you still have my thigh high boots? The black lace up ones?”

           “Hey, I was pulled away from a perfectly good bottle of wine and my couch for this - not that I mind hun – so don’t yell at me.” He laughed, finishing his glass of red wine

           “Well miss ‘I get paid just to travel’ some of us don’t have- “

           “Ah-Ha! I found them!” you interrupted, pulling your favorite pair of boots from the bottom of your closet

           “Anyways, as I was saying, I’m not payin’ for room and board on top of med school tuition. That shit’s expensive enough as it is.”

           “Just think of all the money you’re gonna make when you’re some big timey doctor with her own practice. You’re gonna blow me, and mom and dad, out of the water, so hush up about how much shit costs. Everyone’s in debt these days, who cares.”

           “Nick would let me move in with him.” She grumbled

           “Woah there love, you know I adore you like my own sister,” The two of them had hit it off from the moment they met, which was the best thing you could have hoped for, “but not enough to take care o’yeh. I wouldn’t know what to do. Like what do you eat?” Nick’s eyes widened at the thought of Morgan moving in with him

           “I’m not a dog Nick. I eat food like every other human.” She laughed, rolling onto her stomach and turning the laptop so she could directly FaceTime with Nick

A few months after your first met in London, Nick had had some time off and decided that he would take a tip into the states before he was needed back at BBC Radio. So, he flew into Charleston after spending some time with friends in Los Angeles and was immediately obsessed with Morgan.  Of course, she knew who he was – thanks to her many years of obsessing over One Direction – and was thrilled to spend time with him. From then on, he looked at her, and treated her, as a younger sister, something you were extremely grateful for, considering how difficult the last two years have been on Morgan.

           “On the topic of royalty,” Nick’s voice pulled you from your thoughts, “Don’t make any plans the 28th.” He grinned wickedly as Morgan turned the laptop back to face you sitting on the floor.

           “Bold of you to assume we don’t already have plans that night.”

           “Oh, I know they all do. You’re the one who doesn’t. Bri and Sav will be off doing some fashion thing, and you know Bella will have found a man by then, so she’ll be gone. Which leaves you all by yourself. So, I’m taking you out.” He had hit the nail on the head for your gang.

Savannah and Bri had always been extremely work driven. They knew what they wanted to do since they were young and have been working towards it ever since. Not to say you and Bella weren’t the same way, but the two of you liked to enjoy the slow process of your careers and where they took you instead. And Bella had always been someone who craved affection, so it was no surprise when she had a new boy toy every couple of weeks. None really lasted too long as “they all try really hard to become a serious relationship and I’m just not into that! I’m just a girl with needs!”. You on the other hand, enjoyed spending time at home. You traveled quite often for work so when you got the chance to stay in home and relax, you did just that. And Nick never lets you live it down.

           “How many times do I have to tell you, I’m not as much of a hermit as you make me out to be. I just like relaxing when I’m not working.”

           “I don’t care. I already made the plans, and we’re meeting up with other friends of mine, so you can’t back out now.” He shrugged

           “Nick,” You whined, “I don’t need you playing friend matchmaker for us okay. We’re big girls, we can do it on our own.”

           “I’m not doing this for you love. They were already going to be there so we’re just tagging along. “

           “Fine. At least tell me where we’re going?”

           “Not a chance. Los Angeles is the land of the free baby. Anything can happen. And I promise you, you’ll enjoy yourself.”

Nick was many things; a radio host, a loud mouth, a sincere friend, a bit of a light weight, but he was not a liar. And it was clear he wasn’t only talking about the night he had planned for you both. Los Angeles was going to change your life, you just had to buckle in and enjoy the ride.

I was always so terribly uncoordinated that I literally always got picked last in gym class as a kid. I even got picked after the people who didn’t even make an effort

the only thing in gym class I was any good at was dodgeball and that’s because nobody bothered aiming for me since I was useless to teams anyway

people I thought were my friends when I was a kid would invite everyone but me to their birthday parties

my elementary school marks were literally never good enough because I’d always get at least one A or A- instead of an A+

I didn’t have the highest average at my high school, even though everyone told me I would. embarrassingly enough, high school was the peak of my academic performance

despite being the ‘smart kid’ I literally didn’t win any high school graduation awards, despite there being at least 15 of them. all of my friends won something but me.

when I worked at a summer camp a few of the other camp counsellors tried to prank a girl by giving her a note that was allegedly from me and which allegedly had my phone number. thankfully she didn’t believe them but yeah apparently I was just repulsive or something. I stopped working there after that year

I went to science camp a few times and literally everyone was smarter than me or more talented than me in basically everything

my final cumulative gpa in undergrad was 0.02 grade points off from getting me the highest honours, so now my diploma doesn’t say ‘with distinction’ on it. my parents bought me a frame for my diploma so now it has to hang on my wall and remind me of my failure every day

my entire undergrad was a disaster, really

I only made friends in undergrad because one really talkative dude happened to be my lab partner in a programming class once and he introduced me to literally every other undergrad friend I made

all of my high school friends who told me I was ‘smart’ when I was in high school finished their undergrad with considerably higher gpas than me

I only barely got accepted into grad school and 99% of that is probably because I knew people and because I was involved in a bunch of extracurricular activities

my gpa was way too low to even think about applying to any of the unis I’d dreamed of attending when I was a kid.

even when I got into grad school, I didn’t get accepted into the direct-to-phd stream because my gpa wasn’t high enough

I lowkey get the feeling that the graduate chair of the department thinks I’m incompetent so I suspect that there was a fair amount of disagreement on whether or not to accept me

I didn’t apply for any additional funding for grad school because my gpa was too low to even qualify me to apply for it

I’m second author on two papers but that’s literally only because I was a lab drone who took measurements for three months, giving the first author time to write said papers

legit I did no actual writing for those papers except correcting a couple of typos and fixing some tables in LaTeX

my first summer of undergrad I searched fruitlessly for a summer job for four months. I got nowhere

I tried to get a summer research position for my second summer of undergrad but I got nowhere with that, either. all my other friends found something except me

my third summer of undergrad I didn’t get any of the summer research grants I applied for, and got into the research position I was doing only because the prof I was working for had a shitton of funding

I can’t focus on reading a textbook or a paper for more than five minutes straight

I had to drop a course my first semester of grad school because I was going to fail it otherwise. I was doing so badly that the coordinator of the graduate department literally emailed me personally to inform me of my terrible performance in the course

I forget first-year undergrad physics concepts even though I’m supposed to be teaching them

We’ve gotten to the point of basically being friends; they now invite me to have dinner with them if all three of us are in the house on the same night. This is the set up for this evening, and why I had two and a half drinks on a Tuesday night when I have to be up at 7:30 tomorrow morning. 

But this is not about the dinner specifically, this is just about the fascinating and bizarre set of characteristics belonging to my sort-of-friend/ sort-of-friend’s mom:

Today, Tuesday, was a four drink evening (pre-dinner cocktail, two glasses of wine, post-dinner whiskey - a not-unusual pattern in her life).

As someone who pretty aggressively avoids value judgements around food (despite eating in a way that people like her would definitely approve of), it’s honestly pretty uncomfortable.

My Needs Matter Too: How I Started Speaking Up and Setting Boundaries

In my early twenties, I could shout into a megaphone at a political rally of thousands, but I couldn’t decline drinks from strangers at the bar. I could perform original music for an attentive audience, but I couldn’t tell my friends when I felt hurt by something they’d said. I could start a business, advocate for new laws at City Hall, and share deeply personal poetry on Facebook, but I simply couldn’t speak up for myself in moments of conflict.

At the time, I had no idea that boundary setting and speaking up were systemic issues millions of people struggled with. I didn’t understand that my inability to set boundaries probably originated in my childhood as the cumulative result of my untended emotional needs.

I just thought I wasn’t trying hard enough.

I judged myself mercilessly for being unable set boundaries. I spent many mornings scribbling viciously in my journal, unpacking the previous day’s events. These are unedited excerpts:

“She asked to reschedule our meeting, and even though I promised myself I’d never schedule an early-morning phone call again, I did—for 7:00am. Ugh. Why didn’t I just ask her to reschedule?”

“I resent him so deeply for how he treated me, but when I saw him in the coffee shop yesterday, I acted like everything was peachy keen. What the hell? I’m so frustrated. How do I get better at standing up for myself??”

Woven tightly around my self-judgment was a thick mesh of confusion. I was the type of person who looked forward to therapy, hoarded self-improvement books, and spent evenings with girlfriends unraveling the scrappy tangles of our psyches. I liked understanding myself. You can imagine, then, that I was totally and completely flummoxed by my inability to understand—never mind remedy—my people-pleasing habit.

Most of the time, the thought of saying no—to friends, family, lovers, and colleagues—simply didn’t enter my mind space. No matter how uncomfortable or unsafe I felt, the only future that felt available to me was one in which I pleased the offending person and later felt victimized and resentful.

Other times, when I felt brave enough to simply entertain the notion of saying no, I felt a heaviness in my chest and a closing in my throat. The words literally couldn’t escape my mouth.

My friends who had no issues setting boundaries were wary of my explanations. To them, setting a boundary was like swatting an annoying gnat. But to me, it was like battling a saber-toothed tiger.

I wish I’d known then what I know now: that boundary setting isn’t a simple box to check off of your self-care to-do list. It represents a complicated matrix of issues related to one’s family of origin, socialization, limiting beliefs, and, most importantly, one’s relationship with oneself. Setting boundaries is the final step on an extensive journey of self-reflection and diligent practice. Had I understood this years ago, I would have been able to reassure myself:

You are not weak.

You are not stupid.

You are doing the best that you can.

We set boundaries to protect ourselves. In order to protect ourselves effectively, we need to know what we’re protecting. Developing a rich understanding of our own needs, desires, values, and vision gives us the firm sense of identity we need to keep from wavering in our commitment to speak our truth.

When I didn’t have a clear sense of who I was or what I wanted, it was easy to let others define me; wait for others to speak up for me; resent people who didn’t proactively predict or meet my needs; prioritize others’ needs over my own; and seek value from external sources, like whether others liked me or found me attractive. Combined, these tendencies were painfully disempowering. I often felt like a shadow of myself.

I first began to build a solid sense of identity after I went through a devastating breakup with a long-term partner. My codependency had been a contributing factor to our separation, and I was finally beginning to understand that I couldn’t expect others—lovers, parents, friends, or colleagues—to be my purpose for living.

I also couldn’t allow external measures of success—like climbing the career ladder, losing weight, or winning awards—to be the driving forces behind my behavior.

I had to go deeper. Here’s how I did it.

Step 1: Meet your fundamental needs.

At first, I wasn’t sure where to begin. I mean, how do you build an identity?

In that fragile state of post-breakup unknowing, questions like “Where do you see yourself five years from now?” or “What direction do you want to take your business in?” were enough to reduce me to tears. I didn’t know what direction I wanted my career to go in. I didn’t even know how I would get through the weekend.

What I did know was that I wanted Kava tea before bed, and that I couldn’t sleep without lavender oil in my diffuser, and that going on long walks around the park with my best friend made my heart feel lighter.

As I explain in my previous post about discovering what you when you’re a people-pleaser, these mild, uncomplicated wants were sacred whispers from my innermost self. By pursuing these small desires, I learned to trust myself.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs gave me a helpful roadmap as I became more accustomed to taking care of myself.

Recovering people-pleasers like me rarely meet our own needs and/or prioritize others’ needs instead. Oftentimes, we neglect even our most elementary needs at the bottom of the hierarchy.

In the past, for example, I regularly cancelled dentist appointments and annual physicals, though I fiercely encouraged others in my life to take good care of themselves. I didn’t get enough sleep and postponed trips to the grocery store.

Only when I began to meet these primary needs did other, more complex desires arise. We must meet our own fundamental needs on a regular basis in order to construct the firm foundation upon which our sense of identity will be built.

Step 2: Uncover your core identity.

Over months, I slowly climbed Maslow’s hierarchy, continuing with basic self-care as more vibrant desires surfaced. I began to crave rich social connections, meaningful bonds with family members, travel, and dancing. My natural curiosity, which I hadn’t felt connected to in years, awakened.

Ultimately, I found myself considering how I could make the most of my life—how I could self-actualize and “become the most that one can be.” I considered the following questions during my morning journaling sessions:

Vision: What do I want my future to look like?

Identity: Who am I and what roles do I play?

Values: Which principles or morals most resonate with me?

Skills: What abilities do I possess?

Desires: What do I crave?

Exploring my identity across multiple planes gave me the chance to learn how expansive I actually was.

For starters, I possessed far more skills that I’d ever given myself credit for! I was uniquely empathic, a good listener, organized, and great at designing systems.

I learned that I valued personal freedom, self-expression, financial responsibility, and playfulness.

As someone who was recovering from a codependent romantic relationship, I was stunned to remember that I was sister, a daughter, a coach, a community leader, a best friend, and more.

Wide-eyed, I realized that I was so much more than the shadow-self I’d felt like months before.

I’d spent so much time defining myself by others that this simple exercise—putting my pen to paper and exploring myself for thirty minutes—was a milestone: not only because of what I discovered, but because I took the time for myself to do it at all.

 Take some time to explore your own roles, values, morals, abilities, and desires. It’s easier to set boundaries to protect the things that matter to you most when you’re clear on what those things are.

Step 3: Bring your authentic self to your relationships.

In retrospect, that early period of self-discovery was the most profound period of my life to date. It was characterized by the uncompromising commitment to prioritize my innermost self. Most importantly, those months provided me the firm foundation I needed to bring my authentic self to my relationships with others.

Boundary setting is like working a muscle—difficult and exhausting at first, but eventually, second nature. With this new understanding in hand, I began to tentatively set firm and healthy boundaries in my relationships.

At first, simply saying no to a party invitation was a challenge. But I did it.

Not long after, I set non-negotiable work hours and withdrew from a few extracurricular commitments that no longer served me. It was hard, but also felt totally righteous.

As I pocketed these small successes, setting harder boundaries felt less impossible. Eventually, I told best friends when their actions upset me; terminated romantic partnerships that weren’t meeting my needs; and unpacked old childhood hurts with my parents. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t dance around my kitchen once or twice—okay, definitely twice!—totally overjoyed that boundary setting was coming more easily to me.

After each difficult conversation, rocky though it may have been, a weight lifted from my chest. In the absence of that weight, I could navigate the world more freely. I noticed that I was more present for my clients, more playful with my friends, and more authentic with my family. Relationships that had once been a source of resentment finally felt nourishing because I was bringing my full self to the table.

Notice when you’re being inauthentic in your relationships so can you start creating this same freedom for yourself. Practice communicating what you think, want, and need and sharing how you honestly feel. Once you start working this muscle, it becomes much easier to set boundaries in all areas of your life.

It’s A Lifelong Journey

Putting my truth into action is a lifelong journey because my truth is always changing. My relationships grow, my needs shift, and my identity—the very bedrock of who I am and what I’m protecting—transforms.

Years later, I still occasionally find myself challenged by moments of confrontation. In those moments, I always harken back to the fiercely empowering truth that I set these boundaries to protect the vibrant inner self that I’ve come to know and respect.

I like to remember that this journey may not be linear.

I like to remember the progress I’ve made so far.

Most importantly, I like to remember to have patience and compassion for this inner self of mine. She has become so brave. She exposes herself to the elements, and risks being seen, known, and loved by herself and by others.

My Insurance auto accident settlement?

Hi, I've had insurance in CA for 2 years and moved to Oregon recently. I had my insurance tranferred with an useless Farmers Agent in OR. We exchanged information, and the the person who hit me told me that they would pay for my repairs out of pocket, and that they didn't want to get the police or insurance involved. We conversed on the phone for a few days, and they seemed like everything was going great, and I was supposed to meet them at their friends auto body shop for the repairs...long story short...they never showed. Bad part now is, I never got their insurance information, just license plate, DL, addresses(basically everything BUT insurance). That same day, I went to the police station and filed a delayed police report. Later that week, I went and got 3 different estimates, and the damage averages out to about $900. I contacted a friend of mine, who is a police officer, and they stated that I can issue a summons to the person who hit me for careless driving, and I will have to go to court. This is basically to show them that I'm not messing around. All I want is my BRAND NEW car fixed!!! I'm NOT going through my insurance because my deductible is $1,000, and the damage is less...not only that...it wasn't my fault! My insurance company advised me to have person who hit me's insurance take care of everything, at no cost to me. Here's what I need to find out...Can I send the person a demand letter, basically stating that I want them to have their insurance take care of everything? I have tried to call them, and they send me to voice mail, so reasoning is not an option any more. I don't really know how to go about this?! I want to try this on my own, and not get an attorney involved. I just want to tell them that if they fix my car, I will drop summons and further proceedings (like small-claims court, which I WILL sue for additional $$ for dealing with all this).
