It took suna a minute to let your words sink in. “I- what did you say?” He looked at you expectantly. “What do you want me to say, rin?” “I want you to stay” you couldn’t say that his answer shocked you and you hated the fact that no matter how complicated everything was right now, his words still made you feel like fireworks were set off in your heart. You were about to tell him that things won’t be the same overnight but before your could speak, he beat you to it. “yn, I know I have to earn things back. Your trust, your feelings. I’ll start over if you want me to. Just don’t leave me again. I know now, I don’t love her, not anymore. Not at all. And I’m sorry that you had to deal with my issues and her issues. I’ll choose you over and over but I also know that I’m still healing from what happened with her before so I-“ ; “Rin, it’s okay, that’s enough. I understand. But let’s take it slow, okay?” Suna nodded. “Let me fix everything.” He softly said. You reached out your hand to grab his, giving it a firm squeeze.

- Are you gonna cry ?

Suna let out a small scream when Nozomi hit him.

- That's not something you ask to someone who.... you know ?

You laughed.

- I'm fine, you told them.

You had texted them to tell them what happened. They were in front of your apartment in no time.

- That's just how life goes.

Suna hummed. You were about to cry. You were making that face. You were about to ugly cry. He could still read you.

- I'll be fine... I just...

He saw the tears streaming down your cheeks.

There was the ugly cry.

He knew it was coming. He immediately pulled you into a hug as you tried to sob as quietly as possible.

- It's gonna be OK, he said. And you said you might get back together when he comes back.

He didn't like the idea. But he couldn't tell you that, he couldn't make you feel that either. You could never know.

- What ? you said. You think I'm gonna be single for years ?

And you cried even louder. Nozomi gave him a disproving look.

To be honest with himself, he knew you would date again. He knew you could find someone else. You could never know about how he felt, now more than ever. He didn't want to confuse you with his own feelings when you had just broken up with your boyfriend. And he didn't want to be a rebound. And when you would finally be ready to date, you would fine someone better for you. And he could never tell you in fear to sabotage that.

He was trapped. Trapped as your friend, trapped as the idiot who couldn't distance himself to avoid getting hurt. Because not hurting you was far more important. Not hurting you was the reason he had been doing all of that. And because he needed you. He needed your reassurance to move forward in life, he needed to see your smile to light up his fans, he needed go hear you laugh to be happy too. He just wasn't able to function without you. Just like it was before. He would have done everything to keep you with him that day. Except returning your feelings. Today, he just wanted to keep you close no matter what.

If he could only feel your warmth as a friend, then so be it. He accepted it.

As life goes on, I stay your friend.

It felt strange. Very much strange.

Nozomi was there, in front of you. She came to visit and yet, she was speaking to... Suna. They were laughing with each other, enjoying their time together. Anybody outside from your circle would think the two of them were best friends.

- Y/N ?

You turned toward your boyfriend.

- What did you say ?

- They seem quiet close... do you think there's something between the two of them ?

You scoffed.

- No, of course not !

Or was it ? There was definitely something between the two of them. You could tell by the way she looked at him.

- Let's go buy ice cream, you said.

Your boyfriend looked at you, confused.

- Without them ?

- I think it's better if we let them be.

They didn't seem to notice you were gone. It was for the best, they probably had a lot to talk about. And it felt nice to enjoy a day with your boyfriend. He was supposed to meet your best friend and you thought she was going to interrogate and investigate until she makes him uncomfortable. You even warned him about it. But the exact opposite happened. You were ultimately glad they let you spend the whole day with your boyfriend. You only rarely had the time to go on outdoor dates, as you were busy with work and then too tired because of work.

- Let's go watch a movie ! you said, excited.

Your boyfriend was looking at you with a fond smile.

- Is there even a good movie to see ?

You didn't know. You just wanted to spend time with him. It felt nice, comfortable. When the movie ended, it was already dark.

- Let's go home, he said.

Home. It was slowly becoming your home too. Even though, you didn't say you loved each other yet. You chased that thought away. You weren't ready for that. Not ready to say, nor hear it.

Your phone rang on your way back.

"Y/N ! It's late and I'm lost ! Can't you come and pick me up ?"

Nozomi was whining on the phone.

- Maybe if had spent the day with me instead of Rin.

She chuckled.

"Actually, he went to practice and I was with him but I got bored quickly."

Of course... so she was calling you as a plan B ?

"And I need to tell you something important."

You froze but still answered :

- Ok. Just send me the location and we'll come and pick you up.

She seemed panicked for a moment but she accepted it.

- I guess our date is over, Nomura said after a while.

- I'll see you at work tomorrow.

He dropped you to your place. Then, he quickly went to drive Nozomi to your place. You figured it all happened so she could nicely threaten him to take care of you. She was a true friend, even today. Maybe Suna was part of it too, leaving so she could plan this very moment. When she arrived, you checked with your boyfriend :

- Did she said something like "if you hurt Y/N, I'll bite you" or something ?

Your boyfriend shook his head, confused.

- She said we were a great couple...

It was your turn to be confused. You asked her when you two were about to fall asleep.

- Why do you think you "lost" us during the day ? she laughed. I wanted to see how you were with him. And you look happy.

So that was why they disappeared.

- He's too nice for me to get all scary. And Suna convinced me not to.

You chuckled.

- You and Rin are keeping a secret from me, you said.

You knew it was all there was. Nozomi smiled only said :

- We are. We have something a secret that you absolutely cannot hear about.

Nozomi could never tell you. She couldn't betray both you and Suna. You couldn't know how much he liked you just now.

You went to work early the next morning. You missed your boyfriend all night. It was weird not to have him next to you. Sure, you had been talking with Nozomi during half of the night, but still, it felt different. You realized how much space he had in your life. It felt comfortable. It felt like your life finally found stability as you got older.

When you saw your boyfriend at work, you pulled him into a hug. There were nobody in the office yet. He pulled away quickly.

- Sorry, you said. I just missed you.

You thought it was an embarrassing yet necessary thing to say. When your relationship started, you two clearly set boundaries at work. You both only overstepped them in rare moments, when one needed comfort for each other.

But today, the look in his eyes was different.

- I...

He stopped. Like he couldn't say anything. Still, he showed a small smile and quickly kissed your cheek. Any display of affection of that kind was usual for him at work. You frowned.

- Are you ok ? you asked.

He sighed and pulled you into a hug. Something was definitely wrong.

- I'll tell you after work, he only answered.

So something was happening.

During the whole day, he stayed close to you while trying to put a distance between the two of you. His movements, the look in his eyes, his smile, all of this was contradictory all day.

The two of you left work together. When you got into his car, he sighed. He had been doing this all day.

- I need to tell you something, he said.

You already knew but it seemed like he was the one who needed it.

- I had a promotion.

You smiled.

- That's great !

He had a sad smile on his face.

- Yeah, I was asked to handle the new department in Europe.

In Europe ?

- Oh, you only said.

Because you knew what it meant already. You knew where this conversation was going now. You wished you could stop time and get ready to hear it. You wished you could do something to stop what was happening now.

- Yeah, he said. I just... I don't...

He stopped. You could see the pain in his eyes.

- If I tell you what I want to tell you, we might regret it.

You nodded.

- Still, you should say what's on your mind.

Your voice was shaking a little, so was his when he said :

- I love you.

There was a pause. You couldn't answer, you didn't know what to answer.

- But I will only come back a couple of times every year. I want to ask you to come with me but if I do, it'll ruin what we already have. I will probably be gone for a few years.

He held your hand.

- I can't ask you to wait for me either...

You put your hand on his cheek. He slowly closed his eyes.

- Let's say this. If when you come back, we're both available, let's try again.

He nodded.

- But don't wait for me either, you told him.

He chuckled softly as you put your head on his neck. You weren't ready to let go of him yet. But you knew you had to.

- Let's say in touch, he whispered. Even if we're not together, I want to know what you're up to.

- Let's call each other on weekends.

Finally, you let him go. You both were ready to let go.
