Winter List 2022 Revisited
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Snow on trees might be the answer to everything, March 2023
It really feels like I made this winter list about a year ago. Here’s how it went!
1. Take at least five bubble baths.
C’mon, I’m not an amateur. Of course I did this one.
2. Finally get my own ice skates and skate around this beautiful rink.
Bought skates! I couldn’t get to that gorgeous rink in Huntsville, but I did manage to skate on this wonderful figure-eight rink in Etobicoke.
3. Go skiing.
Sadly, no. But this is top priority this year.
4. Make lasagna soup.
Made! Ate! Loved!
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Lasagna Soup - looks horrifying, tastes heavenly
5. See at least two Broadway plays.
Death of a Salesman, Moulin Rouge and Shucked!

4/5! Love when that happens! Spring list coming tomorrow!

The Road So Far: A Brief Summary of the Gold Rush AU (Part I, by TolkienGirl)
Recently a reader brought to our attention the need for a succinct narrative summary of the events of the AU. In addition to compiling that (please see Part I, covering the "pre-series" timeline through Maedhros' capture), we refer you to our Wordpress, which includes a timeline and an organization of our first four "Series"... that is, the order of chapter fics and one-shots, vignettes and flashbacks etc., into plot arcs that could roughly provide the basis for "All That Glitters," the prestige TV show.
EVENTS OCCURING PRE-1851
[Stories detailing these events are sprinkled throughout the chronological timeline]
The pre-canon timeline begins in the late 1700s/early 1800s when Finwe, a talented metalworker, emigrates from Ireland, settles in Philadelphia to work in the steel-business, and marries Miriel (whose mental and physical health are precarious). Feanor is born in 1807, when Miriel dies in childbirth. Finwe, a Catholic, marries Indis, an Anglican woman (whose family disapproves of the match) in 1808. Thereafter, Fingolfin (1809) and Finarfin (1810) are born.
When Feanor is going on eighteen, Finwe relocates to New York, where Manwe Sulimo is a rising politician. Finwe is interested in locally representing Irish interests. Feanor is apprenticed in Boston to Aule, a blacksmith, and meets Nerdanel (b. 1809), then a lonely girl in finishing school.
They are married in 1827, despite the disapproval of Nerdanel’s Scottish father (Mahtan), settle in the Hudson Valley on Formenos farm, and have seven sons: Maedhros (b. 1828), Maglor (b. 1829), Celegorm (b. 1832), Caranthir (b. 1835), Curufin (b. 1836), and twins Amrod and Amras (b. 1837).
Meanwhile, Finarfin elopes with Earwen in Ulmo’s Bridge (Missouri) in 1828, temporarily earning Finwe’s disapproval. Finrod is born in 1829, Angrod in 1833, Aegnor in 1834, and Galadriel in 1836.
Fingolfin marries Anaire (of French descent) in NYC in 1830. Fingon is born in 1831, Turgon in 1833, Aredhel in 1834, and Argon in 1837.
In 1832, Manwe’s older brother Melkor Bauglir (who inherited the family plantation in the antebellum South) visits New York, taking an interest in influencing politics. At a dinner hosted by Manwe, Finwe and Feanor encounter Melkor, and Feanor (being an abolitionist, naturally) helps Melkor’s slave Rumil, an accomplished mapmaker, escape.
Following his encounter with Melkor, Feanor’s paranoia increases, which leads him to be stricter with his children (especially Maedhros) and to secretly abuse Maedhros as a way of trying to teach him to endure pain. When Nerdanel discovers this, she puts a stop to it, but Maedhros develops an early understanding that he is to serve as a protector of his family, including his father, if need be.
In 1835, Finwe is elected to City Council in New York. In 1837, Feanor buys an additional home in the City to keep tabs on his half-family. In 1841, Rumil, who has relocated to California, has met a land-holder and cattle-rancher, Elu Thingol (a Spaniard, married to a Chinese woman, Melian). Rumil and Thingol have negotiated for Rumil to take over a property called Mithrim, which contains a diamond mine that Rumil thinks Feanor would be best able to help access and harvest. Feanor conducts a secret mission to California, reconnecting with Rumil, building the Mithrim bridge, and finding a large diamond. Suspicious of Feanor’s activity, Melkor visits Formenos in April (shortly after Feanor’s departure) and takes an interest in 13-year-old Maedhros. Without Feanor to manage the farm or provide for the family, Nerdanel and the boys endure a hard winter. Maedhros begins to develop a tendency towards disturbing premonitions.
Feanor returns in 1842, gifting the diamond to Finwe. Melkor, intrigued by the happenings out west, visits Doriath but is turned away after showing lecherous attentions to 13-year-old Luthien. He begins to explore the continental U.S. more broadly, and, in doing business with a former nautical mapmaker, takes an interest in his 18-year-old daughter Estrela (Arien). After Estrela refuses his proposal of marriage, Melkor has his protégé Mairon capture and torture her. Renamed “Belle,” she is then enslaved as part of a workforce that Melkor uses to advance his westward projects, supervised by a former plantation overseer of his, Cosomoco Gothmog.
In 1843, Morgoth’s steel manufacturing enterprise (one of his eastern ventures) is found to be corrupt and rife with worker abuse. He is recalled from his western travels and sanctioned. He is confined to house arrest rather than being imprisoned. Meanwhile, Feanor sends Maedhros and Maglor to be educated in the city, though he chooses not to send any of the younger boys, which negatively contributes to Celegorm’s self-perception. For the next several years, Maedhros struggles against the temptations of high society while Maglor begins a promising musical education/career. There is increasing unrest between Feanor and his half-family, but Fingon and Maedhros form a very strong mutual friendship.
In 1847, Finwe retires from City Council (with a ceili/party at Formenos). Maedhros meets Finrod’s friend Esther Landau, a young Jewish woman. Feanor and Finwe intend to have Maedhros fill Finwe’s seat on City Council, while Maedhros is more interested in proposing to Esther. In the end, neither event comes to pass: at the end of 1848, Maedhros rejects his grandfather and father’s plans, quarrels with Feanor, and privately breaks off his relationship with Esther without ever introducing her to his family. Just before this, Finrod departs on a solo western adventure.
Meanwhile, Melkor has been quietly released from his imprisonment. In addition to his frontier developments, which he has been remotely managing, he now advises Manwe and other council members. Feanor is aware enough of this to wish for Maedhros to help him investigate Melkor’s doings.  By 1849, Maedhros has sunk into a debauched lifestyle, which Fingon (studying to be a doctor under Olorin the physician) is largely unaware of but which Fingolfin notices and is dismayed by. Increasingly paranoid, Feanor threatens Fingolfin’s life after a tense spring and growing conflicts. This creates a rift between Fingon and Maedhros for a time.
In 1850, Melkor has Finwe murdered on the front steps of his home and steals the diamond. Feanor is convinced that Melkor had a hand in the murder, but is unable to completely convince Fingolfin. Maedhros and Fingon reconcile to an increased degree, although both still feel uncertain.
EVENTS OCCURRING 1851 – mid-1852 (“SERIES ONE”)
The timeline for the story officially begins in 1851, in New York. Finrod has recently returned from his western exploration, during which he befriended Beren, whose (now-extinct) tribe is indigenous to the Pacific Northwest, and who, some years before, met and fell in love with Luthien in Doriath. Still unable to seek justice for Finwe’s death, Feanor now wishes to move out west and join Rumil at Fort Mithrim. Feanor and Maedhros gain information from Finrod about the gold prospects in California.
Manwe selects Melkor as the spearhead of the western railroad expansion. Disgusted by this assignment of power, Fingolfin agrees to join Feanor in relocating. Finrod intends to go as well. Finarfin and the rest of his family stays behind, but Galadriel (Artanis) secretly stows away with Fingolfin’s train. Feanor, who is leaving first, has been entrusted with the money to procure wagons at Ulmo’s Bridge in Missouri, where Finarfin’s father-in-law Olwe lives. Nerdanel initially opposes the plan to go west, but is persuaded by the inevitable.
On the road, Feanor and his family encounter Gothmog, who taunts them with Melkor’s rising power and the diamond taken from Finwe’s body. Gothmog injures Nerdanel, which increases Feanor’s resolve to move quickly and trust nobody. In early July 1851, Feanor double-crosses Fingolfin and the townspeople at Ulmo’s Bridge, stealing enough wagons for himself and destroying the res, then killing a number of the town’s militia. He then escapes by burning the titular bridge behind them, knocking Maedhros unconscious when he (Maedhros) refuses to cooperate. Nerdanel, having refused to join in this plan, remains behind.
Now wanted, Feanor, Maedhros, and the other boys continue west, collecting new allies along the way, largely through Maedhros’ recruiting efforts. Celegorm engages in a skirmish that ends with a man being killed and a new manhunt being launched. Maedhros also barters sex for information with a string of barmaids and prostitutes along the way, including Melkor’s spy Thuringwethil, who assaults and scars him by way of claiming a “trophy” for Bauglir.
Rumil tries and fails to communicate to Feanor that increased hostility in the vicinity of Mithrim means it is no longer a safe place for them to join forces. Mairon has insinuated himself as a spy within Mithrim, for a time, and then massacred several of Rumil’s best men. An increased number of militia-men of unknown allegiance are also patrolling the countryside and harassing Mithrim’s inhabitants (who include natives tribespeople and former slaves).
Meanwhile, Fingolfin and his family arrive at Ulmo’s Bridge to find themselves betrayed. After seeing Nerdanel, who intends to return east to Indis, Fingolfin chooses to advance his course with a northward river-crossing. Turgon’s wife Elenwe gives birth to their daughter Idril on the trail, which causes the family as a whole to stop for a time (as autumn closes in). After leaving Elenwe and Idril with a settler family, Fingolfin’s company continues onward. They encounter a posse seeking to revenge Celegorm’s kill, which results in Argon’s death. Fingolfin’s company flees farther north and is caught in a Nebraska blizzard which takes Anaire’s life. While the rest starve, snowbound, they are rescued by Haleth (a native leader who works cooperatively with Thingol, and, unbeknownst to Thingol, with Beren) and her company, which includes Beren and Wachiwi, another native woman who forms a close relationship with Fingon.
Shortly before arriving in Mithrim (between Christmas and New Year’s 1852), Feanor and company encounter Mairon spying on them. After being taunted and questioned by Maedhros, he escapes.
At Mithrim, Rumil is somewhat reluctant to assimilate Feanor’s company. It is revealed that Feanor’s interventions in Mithrim’s development a decade past led to a falling out with Thingol of Doriath, specifically with respect to the diamond mine and the diamond that Feanor gave Finwe. Feanor returns to mining, and also begins to launch attacks on the railroad. Maedhros and Celegorm, on an exploratory mission, discover that the nearby Mount Diablo is being excavated.
Amid growing tensions within Mithrim in the late spring of 1852, Amrod decides to write to Nerdanel. Rumil attempts to mail the letter for him, but returns seriously injured/poisoned. Amrod then rides out himself. Urged by Maedhros and Amras, Feanor and his sons go to find him, but end up embroiled in a standoff with Gothmog at the Utumno headquarters of the railroad project. Feanor is mortally wounded by Gothmog. Maedhros leads the return to Mithrim, but after Feanor dies, rides out without his brothers to attempt to track Amrod down. Mairon and then Gothmog surround and capture Maedhros. Gothmog reveals that Amrod’s horse slipped down a riverbank, and he is presumed dead.
Maedhros is delivered to Melkor in “Angband,” the fortress built within “Thangorodrim” (Mount Diablo).

It's traveling from NY to LA right now, there's 2791.8 just taken off 2197. We subtract and there it is.
Oh my, while i ran my errands and got my dinner for the cold winter evening here, very German Sauerkraut (🙌 ) you all did the math and are playing the super sleuths I get accused of so often 😂
This is what I see... do't know where you got your numbers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh and yes he chose the trailer, but still... how lame
Tumblr media
and according to Google
Tumblr media
So this story must be pretty much RT, as there wasn't time enough for him to fly to LA yesterday in between the activity we saw on sm, a flight to NYC is plausible though between the last just before 4pm GMT and the stories posted at 12.02am and 12.58am GMT

Hi! I’m genuinely curious, why is Seattle a bad place to live? I’ve thought about moving there at one point, until I realized I wouldn’t be able to afford it.
Ah, well, I should probably clarify that I don't think it's, like, an inherently bad place or anything. It was just a really bad fit for me, so being stuck there for several years really sucked. Basically, it boiled down to a few things:
Making Friends: Seattle is so notoriously unfriendly that the "Seattle Freeze" even has its own Wikipedia page. People will be plenty nice to you, but most have no interest in actually becoming friends, and it takes ages to build a social network there.
Lack of Diversity: In this case meaning the cultural sense, not the racial one. (It is racially homogenous as well, but I'm not really qualified to open that can of worms.) Seattle basically does like, three things: extreme outdoor activities, substances, and computer stuff. ("Substances" here meaning things like weed, but also beer, coffee, etc.) So if you want to go skiing every day, climb mountains, smoke weed, drink artisanal beer, play video games, or found a startup, it's a good place for that. However, if you want to do anything else then you are going to be fighting against Seattle every inch of the way.
The Dating Scene: Again, Seattle does some things very well here — it's probably the best dating market in the country if you're poly! But again, the monoculture means that if you're Seattle's kind of person then you're going to have the time of your life, but if you aren't, then you will simply be screwed. And I wasn't, so I spent three years basically unable to find anyone to seriously date. (I will grant that part of this could have been a me problem, but I certainly had far less difficulty both in SF before and NYC after.)
Urban Design: Maybe this is a personal one, but Seattle is in this really awkward middle ground, where it absolutely sucks to have a car in the city, but it also absolutely sucks not to have one. It's my least favorite city in the US that I've ever driven in, but it's also a pretty rotten experience trying to get around town on the bus or (very limited) light rail system. I'd much rather live somewhere with functional public transit, but if that's not possible then I'd at least like my mandatory car usage not to feel like I'm turning the ignition key in a Saw trap.
Distance: Unless your friends and family are in the PNW, you're probably going to want to leave occasionally to see other people, and Seattle is really very far away from everything other than Portland and Vancouver. Perhaps this isn't the biggest issue on this list, but combined with the Seattle Freeze, it can make the city intensely lonely. And combined with the weather, it makes it even harder to get away when the sky starts feeling oppressive in the winter. And speaking of winter...
Climate: This is a big one, and one that I think you can't really understand until you live there. Or at least, I certainly didn't grasp the implications beforehand. Everyone knows Seattle as a "rainy city", but it's one thing to hear about it and another to live it. The thing about Seattle is that it's both accurate to say that it always rains, or to say that it never rains. It's not like most of the country, where you have rainstorms and then times when it isn't raining. No, not in Seattle. In Seattle is drizzles, constantly. From September until June, every time you step outside, it's just... Damp. And cloudy. Once the clouds come in the Fall, you will not see the sun for nine months. The sky is just a bright gray mass hovering oppressively overhead, not dim enough be properly melancholy, not bright enough to be cheerful. It just looms, vaguely too bright to look at, no matter which direction you look. For most of your life in Seattle, you live in hollow light and hollow rain.
Despite all that, I really do think Seattle is a great fit for a lot of people, but it's hard to know if you're one of those people before you move there, and the penalty if you're wrong can be a pretty terrible living experience. My response on that poll was playing along with the "city hate group" thing they were asking about a little bit, but I really did have a very bad time there. It might well be a great fit for you, I know it is for a lot of my friends who live there! I would just advise anyone thinking of moving there to make sure they understand what they're signing up for, because it's easy to get taken in by the aesthetic and not realize what sort of place it is, and what sort of person you need to be to enjoy it.
Thanks for the ask! I'm always happy to talk about cities. :)

hey betts! I was wondering if you have advice with settings in my fanfic. I feel like my setting is blank and i’m in a white room.
the key to setting is its relevance to the story. if the setting is necessary to the conflict or offers integral context about the characters, you'll be forced, by virtue of telling the story you want to tell, to develop it.
think of it this way:
let's say you're writing two characters who are reuniting after a decade apart. maybe they were best friends who had a falling out when they were younger, and they're older now and want to make amends, maybe to become friends again or maybe just for closure.
that story could take place anywhere. it is a universal human experience to grow distant from someone you were once close to and then maybe reunite with them later on.
"setting" can refer to place, but it can also refer to time. how would our story change if our characters were in 1950? if they plan to come together from a distance, the technology of the journey would affect their travel. they would have first made contact with a phone call or a letter. they wouldn't have recent pictures of one another, so their aging would be something your narrator would note. you would have to describe the place they're meeting, too. a house? a restaurant? the zoo? for the sake of understanding your story, you would have to describe (or perhaps explain) these details to give your conflict meaning.
(additional theory and an activity under the cut)
and how would our story change if our characters had been set to meet in NYC on the morning of September 11, 2001? the events of 9/11 would shape the conflict of your story and escalate/alter the tension between them. what if your characters came together from two different countries in spring of 2021, right before travel restrictions were placed? your characters would be stuck together. they would be on the internet looking at updates that you, the writer, would describe. they would be trapped in a place (an apartment, a city, a country) that you would also, by virtue of the conflict, describe.
more geographical perspective: let's say our characters come from rural Missouri, and one of them moved to LA and has lived there for many years. when they reunite, how would LA have changed them? if we're in the LA character's point of view, they would return home with new eyes that would describe the setting to us. or perhaps the Missourian goes to LA. they would be introduced to the conflicts of persistent traffic, warm weather in winter, palm trees. they would note the lack of cornfields and flat land. their place would affect their perception and fundamentally change the stakes of the conflict, which in turn guides your character development.
now let's move away from geography. how would our story change if the characters reunite by accident at a workplace? let's say one of them has worked at an office for many years and the other just got a job in that same office. the setting both physically and psychologically will affect the conflict. physically: how close together are their desks? do they run into each other at the breakroom? does one have to pass the other's cubicle to get to the bathroom? psychologically: their history will inherently affect their working relationship. will they be able to work harmoniously together despite their bad blood?
my rule of thumb is to plant the personal stake of the character and only describe things that are relevant to that stake. so if our characters are in an office and they've been estranged for a long time, your narrator will be interested in the state of the other's desk: the pictures they have (or don't have), the stress toys, the corporate awards, the yellow legal pad with a coffee stain on it, a dying houseplant. setting affects people, but it also defines them. what will our narrator discern from the state of their ex-friend's desk? that they're lonely? that they maybe don't have it all together even though they seem to? how does the space alter or escalate the narrator's understanding of the conflict?
and another, easier rule of thumb: use one small detail to be emblematic of the place. if your characters are meeting at a coffee shop, you can have your character enter, note the exposed brick wall, uncomfortable seating, and chill lofi beats, and we get a pretty good idea what kind of place it is simply by using our existing understanding of coffee shops. but maybe it's weirder than that: maybe it's like an old timey tea house. maybe it's a renovated train car. maybe it's just starbucks.
i think it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking of setting as "describing the place where your characters physically are." but if the physical location of your characters doesn't matter to the scene, are you really obligated to describe it? setting is easiest when you're letting it do the dirty work. when you're defining the things your character does and doesn't notice, and letting the things they do notice push the story (and their growth) forward.
here's a quick activity:
think of a place that was very important to you when you were young. a place you loved and that maybe you wish you could go back to. write out a description of it to someone who has never been there; make it as close to reality as it can be, so your reader (maybe someone specific whom you want to let know you) can understand what that place was like. what details stand out in your memory and why? what information are you eager to share? why was that place important, and what did it offer you?

2017 VoicePlay winter activities — ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
With a new year came new projects and collaborators, as well as several personal milestones for the guys.
.
Auld Lang Syne
VoicePlay started the year on someting of a bittersweet note, finally making the offical announcement of Tony's retirement from the group. Fans had been remarking on his increasing absences from VoicePlay's content and concerts over the preceding year, so the formal confirmation that he had left was sad, but certainly less upsetting in knowing that it was an amicable decision.
youtube
Five years of frequent, extended travel had taken their toll. Tony wanted to spend more time at home with his family, and refocus his creative energies on new projects through PattyCake Productions, the studio he and Layne had been building over the previous year.
.
On a happier note, Eli and Ashley entered the home stretch in preparing for their wedding.
Tumblr media
.
Hot and cold
As they said in the audition video, the remaining guys didn't let a vacancy disrupt their other plans. They continued to alternate between Erik Winger and J.None as their stand-in baritones as they hit the road almost immediately.
First they picked up Winger and headed south for a stylish wedding in the Florida Keys.
Tumblr media
Then they scooped up J.None and returned to snowy NYC for the annual APAP conference after skipping it the year before.

.
Once they got home, it was time for some more rehearsals before they performed at a couple local private events and filmed their next video.

This song wasn't fast enough already, guys? Yeesh!
.
Jacobson nuptials
And of course everyone gathered to celebrate at Eli and Ashley's wedding.

From the road to the air
Toward the end of the month, Layne and Tony gathered up a few family members and friends and headed to southern Florida for their next PattyCake project.

When they got home, VoicePlay snagged J.None again and flew out west to "crash Eli's honeymoon" and headline the annual Napa Valley A Cappella Extravaganza.
.
Part of the extended family
During their week at home between road dates, Earl got to meet Jodi Benson, voice of the animated Ariel, during a Nemo post-show meet and greet session.

.
Round and round
The next weekend, the guys and Winger headed up to New Jersey for a show in Rahway with opening act Garden State Sound Quartet. The concert received some preliminary hype in the local press, and a very nice recap.

Then they popped home long enough to pick up J.None and Max Herskovitz for a five day trip to the Bahamas aboard the Disney Dream. While the other guys were at sea, Layne got into some tech geekery for an interview with Lens Depot as part of their customer spotlight series.

Once they disembarked, they bade farewell to Max and scooped up Layne for a quick jaunt to Maryland.
.
Making a name
After a few quiet days at home, they met up with Winger again to sing the national anthem as the opening to Full Sail University's annual alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During a shopping trip the next day, Layne found a hat with surprisingly accurate embroidery. He joked that it "should have a question mark at the end", and his sister noted that a needle and thread could easily amend it. I'd argue that, like a lot of performing artists, they're more "situationally famous".
.
Frozen treats
The weekend took VoicePlay (again with Winger) north to St. Joseph, MN for a show attended by several longtime fans and local gent Chris Rupp.

Home time
Over next week, Layne, Tony, and Earl were busy filming PattyCake's next project, "Beauty and the Bieber", at several locations around Orlando. Meanwhile, Geoff and Kathy took advantage of the slight lull in their schedules and had a babymoon date night at a Take 6 / Manhattan Transfer concert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, of course, the VoicePlay momentum picked up again at their weekly planning meeting.
.
Ahoy-hoy
The week after that, they gathered up J.None and Max again for another loop around the Caribbean on the Disney Dream.

When they got home, they headed over to a local art school to perform at a fundraiser for their theater program. The lineup for the evening also included Brian Fortuna from Dancing with the Stars and Orshi Horvath, and a newly formed local boy band called the Beatline Boys.

.
Family time
The next few days were spent doing their own thing and marking some big milestones. Geoff and Kathy had their baby shower. Earl and Nick bought a new home.

.
Back to work
The final weekend of the season was bookended by video shoots with new collaborators. Friday saw them team up with theme park pal Matthew Darren for a club jam mashup, while Monday brought a peppy breakup song with Broadway performer John Pinto, Jr.

.
Once those were in the can, it was time to hit the road again, but that's a story for a another time.

Happy late Winter Solstice everyone! Before the month gets too old and before my memory of two Saturdays ago fades too much more, I want to talk about the NYC solstice event.
Around a year ago I posted a report on my experience at the major NYC (Winter) Secular Solstice event (tl;dr: I had issues because of my decision to drive all the way there and wasn't able to get to the afterparty for this reason but got a lot out of the main event despite being slightly late). At the time I expected to return for a summer solstice event with the same crowd, an NYC version of which appears not to have happened. But on Saturday night I went for my second time to the NYC Secular Solstice -- this time more wisely electing to drive most of the distance and then take a train into Manhattan -- and am very glad I did. (I didn't choose to stay the night, attend the megameetup or unconference events that happened on Friday or Saturday.) Below is a rundown of my experience and takeaways. (Below I'll tag several Tumblr-users whom I got to interact with in person on Saturday; if you are one of those people and would prefer to be un-tagged or have an issue with my description of our interaction please just let me know.)
Like last year I arrived around 20 minutes late to the main event (this time from a combination of sloppy time management and confusion over the names of buildings) but seemed to have missed more than I had last year: I didn't feel like I was there for many speeches/songs before it was time for intermission.
Early into intermission I ran into someone I soon saw was @taymonbeal (one of the very first people I knew on Tumblr from around 2014-2015) who had tipped me off that he would be there. We talked briefly, and I mentioned something about not seeing him on Tumblr much anymore like back in my earliest days here, and he said something about a lot of the Tumblr rationalists migrating away from Tumblr in the wake of the porn ban five years ago. Obviously he didn't mean most of rationalist-adjacent Tumblr (I can attest that almost nobody directly in my orbit left, actually, and my Tumblr experience changed only subtly), and he clarified that he didn't mean necessarily directly in response to the porn ban, but that it instigated a number of changes that eventually resulted in the harder-core rationalist people finding other places to hang out. And now I can't believe I never properly made this connection before: I've noticed for years that major figures like Scott, Ozy, and Kelsey ("the unit of caring") are hardly ever around but once were very active, since probably sometime in 2019, and I never made the connection with the timing of the porn ban in late 2018. It didn't change my Tumblr experience very significantly, since I wasn't directly interacting with those people much, and I was still keeping up with Scott's and Ozy's more serious blog posts elsewhere.
I was a little more relaxed for the second half of the event and able to get into it a bit more, but I overall for some reason didn't find myself getting into the program as much as I did last year. It may have to do with my own mood, the rest of my week (or the mental place I've been in this fall or year in general) or the decreased novelty of the event, rather than anything different about the program itself or how it was run. I recognized many of the songs from having heard them only at last year's solstice event (and possibly looked some up a year ago right afterwards, I don't remember); I think most are really good and (as I may have said before) if productions of the rationalist repertoire of solstice songs were all put together in an album, I would consider buying that album. Anyway, the program seemed very close to last year's apart from some differences in the set of readings. I do specifically remember from last year that the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" was done towards the end when the end of the longest night is imagined and the program contains more hopeful numbers, and it wasn't done this year, as well as a song from last year whose lyrics include a poetic description of a smartphone which did not appear this year, although perhaps it was done before I arrived.
Although there is a visible anti-religious streak in the rationalist community for obvious reasons, in a way this kind of event is as religious as, say, a Unitarian Universalist service -- I choose this as a point of comparison mainly because I've been to far more UU services than of any other religion but mostly because there's a different sort of anti-religious streak in UU as well and at least mild overlap with rationalism. During the second half of the solstice event, I busied myself with thinking about why the vibe of this rationalist event still resonated with me a lot more than the vibe of most UU services I've been to, and why I feel more comfortable identifying with rationalist culture as a result. I've already let enough time pass and enough other tasks get in the way to have a very clear memory of my conclusions, but the ethos of this annual rationalist event differs from that of UU services in that
part of the message of the rationalist Secular Solstice is "the world is sad and broken and we have a lot to worry about", whereas that is part of the typical UU message but even more of the latter is about "we are each broken and are coming together to share in each other's suffering";
the winter Secular Solstice (which for obvious reasons is meant to focus on darkness) puts as much emphasis on hope, the goodness of humanity (which in my opinion is an essential aspect of true humanism!) and a possible light at the end of the tunnel, while the main UU congregation I knew kind of made noises about hope and inspiration all the time but this was always outweighed by the emphasis on how both guilty and broken we all are; and
the UU vibe I've seen in the last decade is... the best word I've stumbled upon to describe it is "touchy-feely", and with less intellectualness despite the congregation being disproportionately smart, nerdy, and educated, while the rationalist Secular Solstice has a very cerebral, intellectual aspect while still being moving for a lot of the people involved.
I hadn't been able to find information about an afterparty beforehand and was going to be upset if there wasn't going to be one, because a lot of my intent in going this year was to not fail as I did last year to get more face-to-face interaction and socializing with the Northeastern rationalist crowd. Not only was there an afterparty, which I ultimately found more rewarding than the main event, but it was relatively conveniently nearby (not a long journey over into New Jersey like last year). On the subway ride over, I and a couple of other participants wound up losing the rest of the crowd and traveling on our own -- one of these was @augurydefier who I hadn't known before but who I wound up in pleasant conversation with for a while that evening (it was a bemusingly nice experience to have her ask me about my Tumblr handle, immediately recognize the name "Liskantope" -- guess my pronunciation isn't far from the one others have in their heads -- and introduce me to someone else as a member of rat-adj Tumblr with "rat-adj" pronounced out loud exactly as it should be). I still haven't quite been able to find the Tumblr handle of the other person who was with us on the way over but will edit it in if I do find him and he is all right with it. It's fun and a bit novel to meet people IRL and then become acquainted on Tumblr through this.
The afterparty was in (I think) a hotel lobby and we were among the first ones to show up, but it soon became filled with solstice participants who were all interesting to talk to, including someone I'd met once before at a small ACX meetup event some distance away. The most surreal moment for me was when I spotted @drethelin (someone I've known since my very first days on Tumblr, and since before that from Slate Star Codex comment sections) walking into the room: I'd seen him post selfies from time to time and I hope he doesn't mind me saying that he has a very striking appearance, so I was able to recognize him immediately. I hadn't had any reason to expect to see him. For some reason his real-life name popped into my head immediately from having seen it once on a Twitter screenshot or something (I can only remember the names I've seen the most occasionally and not those of people I see all the time) which (after awkwardly staring at him for a few moments) I addressed him by. I always had an inkling from what I'd seen of him online that he's super laid-back, friendly, and chill and easy to talk to, and that impression turned out to be entirely accurate: soon we were sitting at a table chatting as though we'd been real-life acquaintances for years; we discussed the age-reversal endeavors of Bryan Johnson and Scott Alexander's personality to those who know him as a personal friend and his old LiveJournal community, among other things. He convinced me that I would probably love the rationalist "un-conference" (taking place the next day but I had no plan to go), that it wouldn't be the intimidating, hard-core-rationalisty workshop I'd for some reason been imagining, and that I'll probably look into participating in it next December provided I'm still living/working in the general geographic area.
I didn't get back to my home until past 3am with enough work ahead of me that it's not surprising I didn't get around to reporting on this experience until now, but overall I found it a valuable one and plan to return around next winter's solstice, again, provided I'm still in the area. As I'd already had a very pleasant get-together with @limeadeislife earlier in the day, the Saturday before last I made a personal record of getting to meet / chat with three different people on the same day (Limeade, Taymon, and Drethelin) I'd been long familiar with on rat-adj Tumblr, plus augurydefier ("Slice") who recognized my handle and I've since connected to here. This record for interacting in person with people I otherwise would only know online as Liskantope might not be matched in the future but hopefully at some point it will be.

Bucky And Loki (Winterfrost) Masterlist 3
part one, part two
A Sacrifice Far Greater (ao3) - lionessvalenti E, 16k
Summary: In order for the Asgardian refugees to stay in Wakanda, Bucky must marry Loki to keep an eye on him. What he's giving up is nothing compared to what he gains.
Asteroide (ao3) - SailorChibi T, 6k
Summary: When Loki hears rumors of an unstoppable killing machine that could aid him in his quest, he goes to Wakanda. But the James Barnes he finds is not the Winter Soldier he expects, and it changes everything.
Bad Ideas (ao3) - Unforgotten M, 6k
Summary: "How old are you?"
"Eight-hundred and two. Why?"
On one of the screens in front of them was Loki's basic stats. Under Age, it said 1053.
Bucky and Shuri exchanged a glance.
"Who's the current King of Asgard?" Shuri asked.
Loki rolled his eyes, then grimaced, like rolling his eyes had hurt. "My father. Odin. Obviously."
(After the destruction of Asgard, an amnesiac Loki falls into Wakanda.)
Cellies (ao3) - gwyneth rhys (gwyneth), RenneMichaels T, 9k
Summary: Rolling his eyes, Stark said, “Whatever. I’m decidedly unthrilled about Goth Barbie and Murderbot Ken being in such close proximity, and such close proximity to me. What happens if he decides to whammy this one?” and he pointed at Bucky.
Confession Is Good for the Soul (ao3) - Dont_touch_the_phlebotinum T, 2k
Summary: While Bucky and Loki haven't actively been trying to keep their fledgling relationship a secret, nobody else has any idea about the pair's habit of sneaking into each other's beds and they're happy for it to stay that way. But in Stark Tower, things don't tend to stay quiet for long.
Cracked Actor (ao3) - Dont_touch_the_phlebotinum E, 11k
Summary: Everybody had secrets. Most people's weren't nearly as interesting as they liked to think they were.
There were always exceptions to that rule, though. Loki had just never expected Bucky Barnes to be one of them.
On Earnestness and Other Hassles (ao3) - Unforgotten M, 6k
Summary: Loki only slept with his new husband on their wedding night.
Once was enough, apparently.
On the Subject of Time (ao3) - lionessvalenti E, 8k
Summary: When staying on Earth is too dangerous, Bucky goes into hiding on Asgard. He expects to wait out his time in boredom, until he meets the king.
Restless Nights (ao3) - thehellfire G, 3k
Summary: Request: "Maybe where Loki has to live with the Avengers in the tower and Bucky joins in, or the other way around...?"
Rub a Dub (ao3) - Unforgotten M, 2k
Summary: After Bucky breaks his right hand and his metal arm in the same week, he has trouble with pretty much everything.
Loki's surprisingly good about helping out.
Salvation {Bucky x Loki AU} (ao3) - itellmyselfstories E, 75k
Summary: Set in modern day NYC, where Bucky is a former US Marine now employed as a computer scientist at Stark Research after losing his left arm in an IED blast. Through his colleague Natasha he meets a group of friends, including bookshop-owner Loki, where he is accepted and welcomed more readily than he expected.
the rubble or our sins (Loki x Bucky) (ao3) - LokisxMischief M, 10k
Summary: Mentions: flashbacks of trauma (torture/abuse), self loathing, torturing, mild violence (including torture), angst and some fluff
The Winter Wolf (ao3) - RenneMichaels T, 84k
Summary:: If there is one thing this damn mission did not need, it was a leather wearing bastard with horns getting between him and his target. Not that Loki gives a good god damn what Hydra Assassins want.
To smooth the jagged edge from a stone (ao3) - cruellae (tinkabelladk) M, 11k
Summary: When the dark-haired stranger shows up at the door of the simple Wakandan home where Bucky has been living quietly for the past few months, Bucky has almost completely repressed the urge to grab for the carving knife hanging on a magnetic strip on the kitchen wall. He doesn’t slink toward the door with the weapon concealed behind his back. He has been to enough therapy that he can open the door like a normal person and greet the man on the other side. It feels wrong, but he does it anyway, because that’s what’s healthy and sane and what he’s supposed to be doing.
The man in the doorway gives him a charming smile, his artfully messy black hair a shock against his pale skin, his eyes an unsettling shade of green. “The Winter Soldier, I presume?”
Bucky shuts the door.
(Infinity War never happened, and now after the events of Thor:Ragnarok, the Asgardians are settling on Earth. Bucky is chilling on that farm in Wakanda. AKA the Bucky/Loki fic you didn't know you needed.)
You've Seen the Butcher (ao3) - Dont_touch_the_phlebotinum T, 3k
Summary: They didn't stay the night in each other's beds. It was a simple rule, one they had never even felt the need to formally establish, clear as it was. Their encounters were about flesh and nothing more. If they drifted into sleep afterwards, as they often did, they would simply return to their own chambers within Avengers Tower long before the sun rose. In the light of day, their nocturnal activities had never happened. But as it turned out, even the simplest of rules could be broken.

hey, I'm iwritesickfic! I'm 24 and have been writing for over half my life. Writing sickfics, hurt/comfort, and whump are my guilty pleasures. I take prompts! I write pretty much everything, though not for fandoms, just my OCs. Check below for info on my OCs and a masterlist of my work ❤️
Active Characters (currently writing for!)
Theo and Seamus
Two famous musicians with a complicated romantic history. Theo is an A list celebrity, while Seamus as more of an indie artist is less well known but still definitely up there. Their relationship started as hooking up, then they were together for two years. They went through a messy public breakup, and then a year later got back together after some soul searching and self improvement.
Theo - tall and thin. He's very pale with straight, copper colored hair that falls between his chin and shoulders. He has more feminine features. He's very sarcastic and wry, often uncomfortable with tenderness or affection due to past trauma. Post breakup, he's much more in touch with his emotions. He's prone to illness, but is the type to work through it - he's so busy he usually doesn't have a choice.
Seamus - Two years older than Theo. Equally as tall but broader and more muscular. He's got shorter, wavy/curly blonde hair. He's, conversely, very open and affectionate. He loves Theo, but can find his inability to be vulnerable or look after himself frustrating. He takes any and every opportunity to be loving and cute. He doesn't typically get sick, and when he does it's usually mild.
Side characters:
Zeke, Theo's manager
Kelly, old hookup of Seamus's

Has Sam been active on sm today? there’s ppl trying to suggest he’s in Nevis now & that someone’s joined him on his trip… I’m not very good at figuring out where he is time wise but I was positive he was in the UK & those posts were latergrams. Could you clarify? Thanks 🥰🥰
The posts about Nevis are latergrams, he was there imo in the week of 9 October. My bet, he went there on Wednesday 11 October and went back to NYC the next Monday 16 October. All based on his sm time. His sm activity during the week gives me the impression he was alone. People claiming something else have no proof whatsoever, are biased or have an agenda.
He has been active today as well just about an hour ago f.i

Midnights album - Farmers almanac- (foreshadowing/prediction/manifest)? Just coincidental, lol- funny though.
NYC Maroon skies "Air Quality Index listed New York City at a rating of over 200 this morning. The index goes from 0–500, with numbers being worse the higher they go, and categories ranging from green (“good”) to maroon (“hazardous”). This morning, New York hit purple (“very unhealthy”), and it’s now well into maroon."

Space weather event: solar storm (sun flares) caused communication blackout & auroras "The May 7 event has already caused radio blackouts on Earth.""That activity may include supercharged aurora displays. For example, moderate geomagnetic storms can make auroras visible as far south as New York or Idaho, and strong ones can bring them into view for folks all the way down in Illinois or Oregon.""Solar flares that hit Earth can cause communications blackouts, whereas CMEs are associated with the aurora."

Snow in Venice Beach & Hollywood area
youtube.com/watch?v=O0YStzgqAo4
"Snowflakes have been falling in Los Angeles, including around its iconic Hollywood sign, as a winter storm tightens its icy grip on southern California this weekend."On Friday people in the city marvelled at the unfamiliar sight of a snow flurry around the Hollywood sign on Mount Lee."

Taylor is never beating those witch accusations 😂
With how much the fans have listened to the Midnights album we probably all manifested this

I genuinely don't think he remembers the last time he ate a piece of fruit.
He sucked ass at PE so any strenuous physical activity bar the gym is, nope.
Early bird or night owl? Yes.
He lives in the middle of NYC, he spots foxes all the time during the middle of the night. Knowing him, he's probably fed them a couple of times. He's absolutely researched their population concentration around the city too.
I say hugs but honestly you're lucky if you get a handshake from him.
