Jeremy’s idea of the world ending was always something along the lines of a zombie apocalypse. He had been playing those games since he was young, years of knowledge packed in his brain on how he and Michael and whoever else could survive.

But a strange blue anomaly in the sky was not what he had expected. A meteor? Yeah, sure, that was standard. Maybe he should’ve seen this coming too. But this would also be a fitting end to Earth.

“I have to visit the hospital tonight to give the staff a few things Max might need,” you mumble, not quite disrupting the tension that formed on the ten minute drive from the school-turned-shelter to your house. He won’t look at you from where he’s seated and you won’t look at him either, afraid that the dam you call your unspoken feelings might finally break if you do.

“Alright,” Steve finally affirms, fingers tapping a random beat on the surface of the steering wheel. “Around what time? I could pick you up and ta-”

“-Or you could stay with me ‘til then,” you interrupt so quick, voice breaking halfway that you cringe slightly. Your outburst surprises you for a moment, but the past week has been unforgiving and you don’t feel like being alone, and while you and Steve had been teetering on rocky terrain recently, his presence would comfort you more than burden you.

Even then, you panic a bit at how long it takes for him to respond that you slowly lift your right hand at the ready to unlock the car door. “Or not. I’m sorry-”

“No. I’ll stay,” and he says the words with such finality you could cry.
