It's not a full fic this week beloved readers: I've chosen to feature this dialogue prompt in an upcoming chapter of my WIP Adrenaline Crash: 5+1

Echo stilled his movements, turning his full attention to his Sergeant.

“Hunter.” The name carried weight, invoked like a talisman. “Can you control it?”

The rasp of Hunter’s breath was too rapid, uneven and shallow. As Echo surveyed him the storm-brown eyes were unfocused, glazed with concentration as the enhanced clone fought for dominance over the powerful instincts the Kaminoans had instilled in him.

“Hunter!”

“What?” he snapped, teeth audibly clicking together as he bit out the word.

“Can you control it?” repeated Echo forcefully.

He’d seen Crosshair confront Hunter when he was in this state, knew the sniper’s playbook for trying to hold his brother back from the brink. Had never considered that he would have to be the one to step into that role.

The tension in Hunter’s frame was wound so tight that once it snapped, he was sure to explode into motion. Echo could see it already in the spasms of his muscles that he tried to conceal.

“The others are down there,” Hunter grit out, the words a guttural snarl forced past clenched teeth. With a flinch of movement he started forwards, then stayed himself, shaking his head violently like trying to dislodge the feral whispers which plagued him.

“Don’t avoid the question.” Echo voice was sharp, an unmistakeable edge of command colouring his words. “Can you control it?”

Andrew Shaw is a regular man, with regular prospects, and a regular direction for his regular life to go in. He's just broken up with his girlfriend, but that happens sometimes. That's no less regular than any other part of him.

His life is turned upside down when he finds a mysterious talisman seemingly buried in the walls of his basement. Suddenly, there's something in the shadows, and Andrew is finding it harder and harder to ignore... He didn't mean to be dragged into any of this, but god damn, is he going along for the ride. Because now, Andrew Shaw is of a magical persuasion, and there's little he can do about it.

The main cast:

Andrew Shaw (he/him) - a man who finds himself out of luck by convenience, and who is catapulted into a new life without warning

Damas Pulyatza (he/him) - the last owner of the power. The ghost who could've (should've) chose vengeance but excelled instead at passive aggression

Zephyr (he/him) - The only thing in the shadows that's not actively trying to kill anyone. He's long past that point. The spirit of the mortal man who seems to be attached to him, however, may not be so kind.

Adam Gostlin (he/him) - the spirit in question. Mischievous. Quiet. Calculating. Do not cross the wrong side of this ghost, because he has a tendency to enact violence

Azora (she/her) and Tessari (she/her) - the things in the shadows worth fearing. They haven't spent aeons building up a reputation just to wither now. Be very afraid, especially if you happen to disturb them.

postcanon moshang comm wip: sqh faces the worst aspect of royal marriages - navigating the politics

Part One Completed Fic

Much to Shang Qinghua's dismay, accepting Mobei Jun's proposal was not the difficult part. The demon king of the north had a council to appease. He was well within his rights to slaughter them all if they disagreed but demon loyalty was fickle, a show of tremendous force could keep their families in line or it could give them a unifying cause to rebel. The council were Mobei Jun's subjects, meant to give him advice on the affairs of the kingdom, follow orders given on how to execute matters discussed. And as their king, Mobei Jun had an unspoken duty to at least feign hearing them out, even if he didn't heed it.

The thought Mobei Jun would paint the halls of his castle in black blood if that was what it took to have Shang Qinghua by his side was terrifying and oddly romantic. And way too much to put on Shang Qinghua's shoulders!

Shang Qinghua stood beside the massive throne of black and pale blue ice, its icicle points reaching high towards the ceiling surpassing Mobei Jun's towering height. Mobei Jun kept his word about the jewelry but he insisted Shang Qinghua wear robes more fitting of a northern king's betrothed. A clear message to the assembled council the seriousness of his intentions. The cloak about his shoulders was fur lined, mirroring Mobei Jun's, and the material of the robes themselves thick and multiple layers. Normal human beings would be weighed down by the amount of fabric alone — forget the traditional assortment of jewelry. As a cultivator, Shang Qinghua felt some of its heft.

This was only the betrothal attire, he shuddered to think how heavy and elaborate the wedding ceremony garb will be.

The long sleeves covering his hands were conveniently hide the nervous clenching of his fists at the ominous atmosphere in the throne room. All the council members entered through a thick haze of their king's aura that hung about the air as they assembled to their respective spots. Only the king may sit. Demons tended to assert their dominance to underlings by their aura alone — Mobei Jun essentially opened discussions by slapping his dick on the table.

Shang Qinghua was torn between pride at his king’s clear show of support and embarrassed by it at the same time. Thankfully most would regard his pink cheeks as a human’s weak reaction to the cold.

He wasn’t divided on the dread coming over him at being the focal point of so much demonic ire. Notably from the pale haired demons from the depths of the north kingdom — Linguang Jun’s domain.

While he was technically exiled from the castle for his attempts to steal Mobei Jun’s rightful powers, Linguang-jun was a member of the ruling family, Mobei Jun’s elder, and responsible for a hereditary territory in the region of perpetual night at the northern most point in the kingdom. Linguang Jun wasn’t a fool. After his first dismissal by Mobei Jun’s father, he made his domain indispensable. Many important and dangerously acquired items came from the mines and caves dotting his land. And one of the oldest, most powerful families called it home.

For all his tricks, Linguang Jun secured himself a voice in the council. Without committing to killing him outright, Mobei Jun accepted it. Linguang Jun’s followers usually didn’t cause him too much trouble.

Shang Qinghua sensed today would be different.

A tall, pale haired woman, only a few centimeters shorter than Mobei Jun, broke the heavy silence.

“My king,” her courtesy was a perfunctory incline of her head and bending of the knees.

Shang Qinghua cursed at her in his head for the bare minimum of respect. He jumped when her black eyes turned to him as though she could read his mind, eyeing his attire with thinly veiled disdain.

“Should this servant offer congratulations? But forgive me, I do not remember the council discussing the significantly important matter of our king’s betrothal.”

The heating talismans on Shang Qinghua’s person seemed unnecessary at first. Now, with the air plummeting so low the weaker demon’s present flinched, Shang Qinghua feeling the strain on the talismans to shield him, he was incredibly grateful.

The woman didn’t so much as blink. She met Mobei Jun’s gaze steadily.

On the other side of the chamber, a demon woman sporting dark hair with streaks of silver stepped forward. She addressed Mobei Jun but it was clear her words were targeted at the woman beside her.

“My king,” her courtesy was deeper, genuine, “It is the understanding of those present we were summoned to discuss this very matter. And this servant rejoices our king has found a candidate worthy of the honor of royal consort.”

Her gaze that drifted to Shang Qinghua was neither cold nor warm. Shang Qinghua doubted any demons were thrilled at their king’s choice in consorts but some were loyal enough to back his decision.

It was better than total opposition.

Worldbuilding in Five Tag Game

Another super belated thanks to @athenswrites for the tag! I LOVE worldbuilding and talking about my worldbuilding, so this is perfect lmao. For this one I'll be using my WIP, Crown of Blood. It's the only one I have decent inspo pics for. None of the images are mine! I found them on Pinterest!

Castle Pieris

(Name is a placeholder.) Technically belonging to the king, it's the current permanent resident of Princess Adrasteia, as a gift for her birthday. As King Silas III has yet to bequeath a castle unto the rest of his children, it's largely accepted as a blatant act of favoritism. Previously the stronghold belonging to a warlord of Sylvatica (a nation-state-turned-province after being conquered some decades back), it served as a holiday villa for several generations of Adecian royal families).

As such, there are centuries' worth of wards, traps, and other tricks (both magical and mechanical) built, powered, and neglected by both Sylvatican and Adecian residents. Magic is etched into each beam and brick.

Pomari Town

One of the closest and most prosperous towns near the Palace. A bustling place that still manages to feel small, despite being so full of life. Lilia (the protagonist of the original story) and her mother live on the outskirts.

Pomari specializes in small magic craft productions (such as potions and talismans), as well as fashion. There are plenty of guilds in the area. The residents are primarily merchant class, with the occasional lower-end nobles occasionally residing there during the on-seasons in secondary town homes. The peasants that live there are usually employed as commute cleaners and servants, with properties closer to the edge of Pomari. (I'm not the best at economics so I'm definitely going to be workshopping this more at a later date).

WIP Wednesday

This is what I wrote today. It's actually closer to the middle of this beast (3959 wds total so far, and it's not even half done yet). It's first draft sloppy and raw. I really don't know why I'm doing this except I decided I had to know what happened between Madam Yu and Wen Zhuliu and Jiang Fengmian got dragged in. So now it's basically "why are the Yunmeng Siblings' parents the way they are? What the hell went wrong between them?"

Strange things had been happening near a cluster of farmhouses some distance outside of town. It was too small to be called a village and had no proper name. But the families who lived in the houses tended their fields and brought their crops into town to sell. They were hardy, self-reliant farmers who did not spook easily and handled their own problems. 

So when the family elders approached Clan Leader Yu and humbly asked for his protection, he immediately asked, “From what?”

“Clan Leader Yu, there has been a ghost killing our chickens and pigs and damaging our crops. We have set traps and held watches but only in the past few nights have we seen it and it is like nothing we have seen before. This morning, just before the sun rose, it took a child.”

Yu Ziyuan was sitting next to her father in the reception hall, helping balance account books. She reached for her sword and stood up. 

“Did you see where it went?” she asked.

“Miss Yu,” the eldest man said, almost breaking into tears. “The child was my youngest grandson. The ghost ran toward the mountains, but my son and oldest granddaughter ran faster, throwing rocks and yelling until the whole village turned out in pursuit. The creature could not run faster while holding my little grandson, so it dropped him and dissolved into a cloud of black smoke.”

“Was he injured?”

“No, Miss Yu. He was uninjured. But we cannot let this ghost near our village again. So we respectfully ask for help.”

Yu Ziyuan turned toward her father and bowed. 

“Father, with your permission, I would like to drive this ghost away or end its depredations forever.”

Clan Leader Yu stood and clasped his hands behind his back, thinking.

The Yu Clan of Meishan was a small but ancient and dignified clan that was known more for its wealth than cultivation. Over centuries it had produced famous scholars and officials, legendary beauties, and acquired an enviable collection of priceless antiques. They were proud patrons of the arts and generous benefactors of temples. 

They saw cultivation as a requirement for the gentry but preferred a more indulgent aristocratic lifestyle. Their sons and daughters typically trained until they formed a golden core, and could wield a sword and a few talismans successfully. Then, they considered that part of their education complete.

But from a young age, Yu Ziyuan could never hear enough about the deeds of valiant cultivators. It seemed to her that these heroes formed the sole thin membrane that separated and protected this world from the world of demons and ghosts and she thought that was far more glamorous than the idle, comfortable life of a nobleman’s wife she was destined to lead. 

When she married, it would be to one of those brave men, and they would fight side by side against evil. Her exploits would capture the imagination of future children.

After forming her golden core, she begged her parents to allow her to continue training until they relented. They had already arranged prestigious marriages for her two older sisters, and her father was inclined to let her take the place of the son he never had. They hired teachers and sent her to the classes held by the Lan Clan of Gusu at Cloud Recesses, and she became proficient without belonging to any sect or master. She made friends in the powerful cultivation clans and received invitations to join them on Night Hunts and to attend conferences. 

She grew into a beautiful young woman and carried herself with pride, dressed in sensible clothing made from the finest fabrics, in colors that flattered her fair complexion and accentuated her tall, athletic figure. She wore cosmetics and hair ornaments that highlighted her noble eyes. 

Naturally, she attracted the attention of men but her sharp personality made them afraid to offer romantic overtures, which was just as well because if they had, she would have soundly rebuked or even humiliated them. Yu Ziyuan considered herself a force to be reckoned with and as her exploits piled up, other people did, too. Her heart would yield only to the bravest, most talented man in the cultivation world.

Clan Leader Yu regarded this daughter, who, had she been a boy, he would love to have made his heir, and turned toward the village elder.

“What does this ghost look like?”

“It looks like a beautiful woman, but with long, tangled hair, sharp, pointed teeth, and tattered clothing. Its eyes are wild and your body soaks up a cold wind when you get near.”

“This sounds like a very strong hungry ghost, father. I can handle her.”

Clan Leader Yu nodded.

Yu Ziyuan returned to her room to gather a few supplies, which she stored in her qiankun pouch. Jinzhu and Yinzhu clamored around her, fastening her sword to her back and helping her out of her satin slippers and into walking boots. 

“Please, let us come with you!” Jinzhu wailed. 

“I am learning the ‘barrier’ hand seal,” Yinzhu boasted, waving her chubby hands in a pattern. “I can help!”

Yu Ziyuan knelt so she was at face level and gripped their shoulders.

“Someday you will be my fiercest disciples and most trusted assistants. But today you are still children and it’s safer for you to stay here. I will need you when I return. Practice cultivation until then.”

At the gate in the wall surrounding their palatial estate, a tall, muscular man with a disinterested face was waiting for her. She recognized him as Zhao Zhuliu, a new guard her father had brought in to replace one who had married and moved back to his ancestral village. 

He bowed with a slight air of contempt, then looked away from her, saying nothing. Yu Ziyuan, who was used to lavish deference, felt knocked a little off kilter. She drew herself up as tall as she could, and marched past him with a straight, stiff back, and his heavy footsteps fell in place behind her.

Got stuck for a bit but hopefully rolling along now.

“A focus… like a crystal?” Asra asked, his thoughts racing. Before Aisha could answer, Selina said, “No, the talisman.  Julian’s talisman.” “Right.  We’d have to figure out exactly how–” “Her rapier!” Asra exclaimed.  “She has a crystal now that focuses her magic into ice.  If she uses Julian’s talisman instead, then–” “It will focus his magic, and her magic–” “Together!” “Together.” The three of them stood in silence for a moment.  Finally, the circle was closing, the pieces were coming together. Aisha exhaled heavily with a soft laugh, gesturing to the page.  “The rest is relatively simple.  They just need some relics from that period of time, something that can provoke an emotional response.  Emotional memory triggers are the most powerful.  The more, the better.”  She looked at Selina.  “You knew them back then.  Do you think you could help find things that meant a lot to them?” The pain that shot through Selina’s heart at the thought was visible in the sudden slope of her brow and tremble of her bottom lip before she pulled it in between her teeth.  She nodded. “Is that all?” Asra asked.  “A circle, relics, and Ilya’s talisman in Altheia’s sword.  And they need to do the ritual on their gateway ship so their magic is strongest, right?” “Yes.”  Aisha gave an awkward grimace.  “They also need… rope.”

Aisha exhaled heavily with a soft laugh, gesturing to the page.  “The rest is relatively simple.  They just need some relics from that period of time, something that can provoke an emotional response.  Emotional memory triggers are the most powerful.  The more, the better.”  She looked at Selina.  “You knew them back then.  Do you think you could help find things that meant a lot to them?” The pain that shot through Selina’s heart at the thought was visible in the sudden slope of her brow and tremble of her bottom lip before she pulled it in between her teeth.  She nodded. “Is that all?” Asra asked.  “A circle, relics, and Ilya’s talisman in Altheia’s sword.  And they need to do the ritual on their gateway ship so their magic is strongest, right?” “Yes.”  Aisha gave an awkward grimace.  “They also need… rope.” “Rope?” Asra blinked in surprise.  Aisha nodded, glancing only briefly at her son before looking pointedly down at the book.  “Mmm.  It’s a, uh… a sex ritual.” “Oh!” Asra and Selina both exclaimed at the same time.  For Asra it was a mix of surprise while somehow also being obvious, with sex magic being amongst the strongest, but… it wasn’t a conversation he wanted to have with his mother. “The ropes represent the Forget Me spell, the way it works like a net holding Julian’s memories back.” Asra remembered something Altheia had told him that the Queen of Cups had said to her in a dream - Ice will cut all ties.   “So cutting the physical rope with the Rising Tide will also cut the magical ‘net’ holding Ilya’s memories.  That it?” “Basically, yes.”  Clearing her throat, Aisha said in a rush, “When the spell is… released.” Selina suddenly burst a laugh that seemed to surprise her as much as it did Asra, and she clamped her hand over her mouth.  But her shoulders shook as she giggled. It was infectious, and Asra couldn’t help but laugh at the awkwardness of it all.  He put his hands on his hips. “All that aside… we have it now, don’t we?  All that’s left is the talisman, and for Ilya to work out when the stars align.”

The supplies from the caravan naturally went to the bannermen and thanes first. After all, weren’t they the ones defending their borders? And Fram’s father was wise enough to keep none of it for himself. They still had food in the granaries and cellars. Enough for a little while longer. And at this point, anyone who had extra food would be begrudged, king, chieftain, thane or freeman. It was better to keep up the facade of generosity. After all, there were more caravans coming. Stores would hopefully be replenished soon enough. It was up to each bannerman to decide how to distribute the food to their own freemen and smallholders. If their people were starving or else revolted, that was no concern of the King. It only meant that their position was weakened — and that put more power in Frumgar’s hands. Fram doubted much of the new supplies would make it to the freemen. They were expected to forage and fish for themselves, and they could keep their own crops so long as they paid their due taxes and did not poach in the few kingswoods which dotted the otherwise barren landscape.  His father attempted to extend hospitality to the uncanny Men who led the caravan, but they politely declined, saying it would make little sense for them to make themselves a burden on the already strained storerooms. His father was angry about it for several hours, grumbling about his stinging pride, but Fram thought that had been a perfectly reasonable response.  The caravan disappeared into the hills the same day they had arrived, leaving everybody in his father’s keep to wonder and gossip about what kind of Men they were, and if they were even Men at all.

And, from a Baizhu fic I started (I know, I know! But rest assured I only work on it after I have hit my word count goals on other things!)

Baizhu went upstairs. There were still some rice buns leftover from the basket Gui had brought with him this morning for them all to share. They were filling and nutritious, purple from the horsetail mixed into the rice flour, stuffed with vegetables and pork. Baizhu parceled four into a napkin and filled a canteen with cold water. Then, he collected his cane from its hook by the stairs. He hadn’t really needed it all day, but he would for a trip down that irritatingly huge staircase outside the pharmacy.  “Jussst where are we going?” Changsheng demanded as he went back downstairs, parcel in one hand, cane in the other.  “On a walk, Changsheng. A midday stroll is very good for maintaining a healthy constitution.”  “In thisss heat? You?”  “Oh, it’s not that bad. You’re being so dramatic today, you know.”  Changsheng harrumphed, and was still scolding him even as Baizhu told Gui and Qiqi that he would return shortly.  “You’re not well!” Gui protested, trotting after him.  “Nonsense,” Baizhu tsked. “I am just as well as I ever am, Gui. Look after the pharmacy while I’m gone, and if anybody needs something specific write a note for me and I’ll look into it when I’m back. Qiqi—”  A purple hat and the edge of a talisman peeked up over the pharmacy counter, just barely visible. She was probably on tiptoe.  “Eat something, dear,” Baizhu called. “You haven’t since breakfast.”  “Eating something,” Qiqi replied. “Yes. Qiqi will eat.”  “Good girl,” Baizhu said, and despite all of poor Gui’s protestations and Changsheng’s vehement scolding, he began his trek down to the terrace below.

“It is time for you to return to Shufu, Jingyi. Would you like to play with A-Yuan again tomorrow?”

“Yes please,” Jingyi replies, because even if he still doesn’t like Lan Yuan very much he won’t pass up the opportunity to come play with the rabbits or his too-loud games that he can’t play anywhere else. It doesn’t even matter if Lan Yuan doesn’t want to play them with him or not – he’s plenty good at entertaining himself if he’s got the chance, so he’ll take it.

“Mn. Will you promise me you will go directly to Shufu from here? I must stay here with A-Yuan.”

“Yes, Hanguang-Jun!”

“Good boy, Jingyi. Go now, Shufu needs your help.”

The praise and the promise of being needed – genuinely needed, not just tolerated – both do wonders to get his focus turning away from his aborted games and to what the rest of the afternoon will hold, and so he bows quickly to Hanguang-Jun and Lan Yuan both before he goes running out of the clearing, legs buzzing and chest huge and full of light for all the energy that he’s finally allowed to let loose instead of bottling, bottling, bottling until he feels like he’ll explode.

He’s sensible enough at least to slow back down to a walk when he reaches the edge of the common areas, but his brisk footsteps still border close enough to ‘hurrying’ that he earns a few sideways glances on his way to Lan-xiansheng’s office. Jingyi doesn’t care. Lan-xiansheng needs him, needs his help with his extremely important work running the Sect, so Jingyi feels like a little rushing is okay when he’s got an important job to do. Something meaningful, not just another chore to get him out of the way.

“Lan-xiansheng!” he greets upon sliding the door to the man’s office open with a noisy clatter, grin wide enough to feel like it’s going to split his face in half. “I’m here!!”

“So you are,” Lan-xiansheng replies without looking up from whatever he’s reading. “Come in and shut the door Jingyi, I’ll send you back out in a few moments.”

Jingyi does as instructed, shutting the door a bit more carefully than he’d opened it before he steps further into the room with his hands tucked neatly behind his back. He takes a few deep breaths, trying to hide how out of breath he is from his time spent playing at top speed and then power walking through the Sect to get here, but he soon becomes aware of Lan-xiansheng’s piercing gaze on him so he figures he’s not doing a good job of hiding it.

“You played with Lan Yuan.”

It isn’t a question but Jingyi nods anyway, a little wary suddenly that just because Hanguang-Jun said it’s okay doesn’t mean Lan-xiansheng will agree with him.

“Will you do so again tomorrow?”

“Can I?” Jingyi asks, stomach beginning to sink.

“You may. I will arrange for water to use for combing your hair afterwards from now on,” Lan-xiansheng harumphs and goes back to whatever he’s doing at his desk. Jingyi’s hand flies to his hair, feeling around for all the little baby hair flyaways he’s sure are sticking to his sweaty forehead and finding that his ribbon is crooked as well. He flushes a bit and does his best to fix it without any way to see himself.

“Thank you, Lan-xiansheng,” he says with a little bow once he’s a little more presentable. Lan-xiansheng gestures for him to step closer, and once he does so he turns the folded letter in his hand to show him the name printed on the front.

“Do you know Lan Yishan-laoshi?”

“Mn!” Jingyi nods emphatically, excited to be able to say yes. “He teaches talismans to the shixiongs and shimeis!”

“He does. Deliver this letter to him, and once you have done so you may ask him any single question you have about talismans. Report back to me with your question and his answer, and we will discuss it. Repeat that.”

“Find Lan Yishan-laoshi without running. Give him your letter. Pick one good question about talismans to ask him, do my best to remember his answer. Then come back here without running, tell you what he said as best as I can, and then we will talk about what I learned.”

Lan-xiansheng blinks at him but his expression doesn’t change, so Jingyi doesn’t know what he’s thinking to make him pause before he says, “Good. Go.” Jingyi takes the letter and tucks it safely in the fold of his robes before he bows to Lan-xiansheng with a grin and takes off like an arrow across the room, throwing the door open again with a bang before he remembers he’s supposed to be going slow and jerks to a stop on the porch to close the door nicely behind him.

So I had 2 characters as wips, I decided to finish Belladonna's remake first as I got more for it. She's quite different now, though still kept the nature witch thing and purple vibes. Also recycled Yume's old modern looks (she's not gonna be part of this story) for her. Also finally name-dropping the city all these characters mostly live in.

Name: Beatrice Dubois

Nicknames: Bella/Bea (GF Amalia) Aunt Bee/busy bee (Janus, Amalia's nephew) Nosy woman (Angus, a doctor/Amalia's Seeker coworker)

Age: 70 in human years, considered to be around middle-aged by nature witch standards. (Different types of witches have different lifespans, though majority tend to live between 100-150 years on average)

A Forest witch with quite powerful and versatile powers

Occupation: Investigative journalist/honorary aunt

Abilities:

She can create, nurture and wither any types of plants from flowers, to vines, to even trees. She can also recognize any type of plant instantly, and utilize their properties from poison, to sedatives, to antidotes, etc.

She can create objects from the plant matter, such as furniture, tools and weapons, etc.

She can use her plants to "hear" and "See" things; just a small leaf of hers on the corner of a room she's not in allows her to eavesdrop on things.

She can morph her talisman into any useful tool, though it is limited in size to something she can hold.

If she stops using her talisman, she can create quite powerful attacks, such as tree golems or near unbreakable vines. She tends to struggle to control these things though...

Weaknesses:

Like all forest witches, without her talisman Beatrice struggles with controlling her abilities and might cause havoc accidentally. Her magic is also relatively weak against fire based magic.

Her nosy, curious nature sometimes lands her in trouble, and can annoy people around her (such as Angus Belmont, a well known doctor she's acquainted with due to his connections to the Seekers)

Personality:

Beatrice is very curious and easily excitable person, who loves to solve mysteries and unearth hidden secrets. She is very determined and stubborn when it comes to reaching her current goals, sometimes to the detriment of her own well being.

She's generally seen as an eccentric, fun person to be around, although to some Beatrice might be a bit much with her energy, where her energetic charm turns into more of an annoyance.

While she seems quite emotional, Beatrice is capable of thinking rationally and detach herself from whatever she is investigating, no matter how emotionally taxing it is. She generally has two "modes" as she calls them; "casual mode" and "journalist mode," and she's much calmer and more serious in demeanor with the latter.

Due to being very intuitive and sharp minded, Beatrice is able to pick up on things others don't, and notice even slight changes in a scene or a person's behavior. She also has very little tolerance for bullshit, and is not afraid to call someone out on it once she's hit her breaking point. "You have to be patient in my job, but sometimes you just can't even" as she puts it.

Beatrice lovers dressing in retro-inspired fashion, and mostly sticks to purples, reds, and neutral colors like black, white, and beiges.

She might sometimes wear green in reference to her girlfriend though, such as during their dates.

She is a lesbian, and didn't actually have a girlfriend before Amalia, being so focused on her studies.

She does often annoy her young honorary nephew that's living with her girlfriend, but Janus does like her deep down. Especially given how she was more than willing to call out his parents to their face alongside his aunt.

She lives in a penthouse and has a full on greenhouse room in it. Like is typical for her kind, she does enjoy gardening quite a bit and tends to often go there to meditate and contemplate on whatever case she's investigating

The park Mariella looks after is one of her favorites, and that is where she met her in fact, and the pair became friends.

She knows her GF is a Shadowless - a special secret operative of sorts for the Mirror World's highest council - and sometimes jokingly asks her about her job, knowing she is not allowed to tell her about it.

She has a red and a pink version of the polka dot shirt. Generally she tends to have the same outfit in multiple different colors.

Thank you for your patience, anon - I know it's been a few days, but I wanted to save this ask for WIP Wednesday! (And thank you for your kind words ☺️) This one is going to be a long post, so the whole thing is behind the cut.

So this WIP is a modern-day cultivation A/B/O AU very loose retelling of the plot of the drama (way fewer people die 😂). I've long been interested in the facet of A/B/O worldbuilding that posits the existence of licit and openly acknowledged sex workers available to help an unpartnered alpha or omega (sometimes just omegas, but that doesn't make any sense) through their heat or rut - sometimes you see references in fic to a "heat service alpha" or just "a professional"... almost always in the context of the main character's distaste for this option. 😒 The reflexive sex work antagonism is just... *sigh.* ANYWAY. It seems inevitable to me that there would be a class of trained professionals, because, like... what about ace people, or people with sexual trauma, or people whose partners don't have the pheremones/hormones/anatomy to meet this particular need, or kids whose heats/ruts come on too soon--or a million other scenarios where going through a heat/rut the "usual" way would be unacceptable or outright impossible?

And then I thought to myself, "Self, you know what would be super helpful in doing that job? The kind of incredibly powerful yet finely-tuned control over your own bodily processes that you get from a golden core in The Untamed." And then I thought, "Okay, then what are talismans?" And the answer was obviously: assistive devices and pharmaceuticals. And then it was ON.

All cultivator-guides are trained to be generalists, but it’s common to develop a particular specialty as well; Wei Ying is a talisman specialist, a trained biochemist who uses and invents the pills, patches, powders, and injections that they all use, to a greater or lesser extent, to supplement the work of their golden cores. Lan Zhan’s specialty is working with clients who, due to neurological conditions or physical injuries, have an impaired sense of smell. It’s a very narrow niche; so narrow that he is, as far as he knows, the only such specialist. But he earns great satisfaction from helping clients who other guides, so dependent themselves on scent, would not know how to help, or might declare beyond help.

They’d been paired with each other for their first heat and rut as guides, at the Gusu Lan Guide Academy – they were each other’s first client. And it was good, so now they handle each other's cycle peaks exclusively, which they time to coincide for that purpose. Lan Zhan tried other partners, early on, but he and Wei Ying are ideally suited - equals in cultivation, with enough in common to have something to talk about during the downtime, holding themselves and each other to high standards, and well-matched in preferences: Lan Zhan is more assertive than most alphas prefer, and Wei Ying likes rougher handling than most omegas are comfortable providing.

And then, of course, there’s the fact that Lan Zhan is hopelessly in love with Wei Ying, and that's the only time he gets to have him. But maybe he's wrong, he thinks. Maybe the fact that they keep returning to each other after all these years means something, beyond the fact that they like each other as friends and respect each other as colleagues. Maybe, someday, he'll work up the courage to ask.

I might add more to these in the future, but here's a handful of superstitions in the various countries from The Golden City. (my main WIP)

Solace- It’s common to trace a cross in the air with a finger if nervous.

(oddly enough considering this is the most relevant country in TGC, I don't have much written down for it. I should remedy that)

Ketra- If you break your word of honour, back luck is believed to follow you around. The more times this happens the worst luck, etc. It’s also a common tradition among warriors to touch their weapons to their forehead before going into tense/wary situations for luck. It’s also commonly believed that demons have the most power during the Second Solstice, hence the large feasts that take place inside. (driving the demons away)

Andha- As a whole, Amorians are quite down-to-earth and skeptical of superstitions. Most Amorians do believe in luck though, and have several things they do to sway the universe in their favour. Common gestures include; tracing a circle in the dirt/on a nearby surface, touching the tip of each finger with the thumb, whistling/humming, and resting a hand against a nearby surface with the fingers spread out. It’s also a habit for most Amorians to tap the top or side of a doorframe as they enter a building.

Even if they do believe there’s bad luck in something, they are unlikely to change their mind because of it. They are also regarded as part-spirit by basically all the nations, with varying degrees of seriousness. (they find this deeply amusing)

Shyi- A common supersious activity tied into Unism is leaving food out for friendly spirits. It must be as fresh and high quality as possible, otherwise they will be offended. There’s also specific foods and specific places to put the food in, and if you do it incorrectly you may attract bad spirits instead. Further on that, there’s various types of crystals/rocks that are supposed to carry bad or good luck. Typically these talismans are infused by priests with good vibes or cleansed of bad vibes also by priests.

the Talin- Killing an animal or person with no just reason is very very bad luck. Same as destroying plant life without provocation. Howling dogs are also considered a sign of bad luck, as are snakes and several types of plant life, largely poisonous types. The Talin are probably the most superstitious out of the various cultures.

In long-ago Ivalice, the Ascians worked as one for the last time. Primals of great power - the Espers - were summoned, defeated, and gifted to mortals in order to force a Rejoining. However, after the failure of the project, the Espers were sealed away and the plan abandoned.

Hi! I'm EorzeanPages, aka Chemystry on AO3. Since 2021, I have (slowly but surely) been working on a passion project fic called "No More to Roam." It is a love letter to my favorite single player FF game, FFXII, where I first heard the name Emet-Selch and found my favorite Esper, Zalera. This story ignores anything about Ivalice set down by the Stormblood raids and transplants the Ivalice map from FFXII into the FFXIV world.
