“come on baby, let us have a little taste.” mattheo purrs into your left ear, gently brushing the hair from your neck and exposing your tender, pristine skin. he instinctively curls his lip in lust, the sharp fangs ready to sink into your flesh.

“you really gonna let us starve, piccola? how selfish.” theo chimes in from the other side of you, his hand resting on your thigh as he gazes down at you. his blue eyes are filled with ravenous hunger, eager to devour you and still his cravings.

“okay, go on then�� but be gentle!” you eventually relent, always wanting to please your boys. you don’t have to tell them twice, as they eagerly draw closer to your neck, fangs sinking into your flesh from both sides, making you hiss at the sharp sting. even though you told them to be gentle, they’re anything but, greedily drinking from you.

both boys are in heaven, the metallic but sweet, intoxicating taste making their minds fuzzy. no other blood compares to yours, they always say, which is why you ended up in this love triangle in the first place. they both want—no, need—you to still their bloodlust. you are addictive. and no matter how many times they try drinking from other humans, they always come crawling back to you.

mattheo’s hand roams over your body before landing on your chest, roughly massaging as he feeds from your neck, while theo squeezes your thigh, his hand creeping higher and higher. they’re so sloppy and careless with it— your blood dripping down your body, their groping hands leaving red marks all over.

you moan softly, unable to suppress the arousal building inside you as their sharp fangs dig deep into your delicate flesh, their hungry mouths attached to your neck, their hands fervently roaming your body— and they can tell you’re dripping between your legs, both boys cockily smirking against your skin.

You Might Not Like Him is the title I'm testing out

The blaring ringing of an alarm that’s distinctly not his has Theo blinking himself awake. He stretches an arm out, easily finding his phone on the nightstand, and presses both volume buttons. There is a two-second delay, same as always, and then:  “6:30 AM,” says a mechanical voice as he drops it back onto the table.

Beyond the obnoxiously thin wall, the alarm suddenly shuts off. It’s got to be Liam’s, despite being earlier than it normally would be. He’s not going to dwell on the fact that it could possibly be weird that he knows his neighbor's schedule. It’s not. He scrubs a hand over the lower half of his face, gentling the touch as he nears his eyes, skipping over the raised, still-sensitive skin between his left eye and nose entirely. Their walls are thin, not built for some whose hearing is better than most, and Liam’s alarms are loud as shit. Most everything about the idiot next door is loud, despite the fact that he lives alone. 

Beside him, Chi huffs and shifts, chasing a surprised Oof! out of him as she drops her head onto his abdomen. 

“Fine, fine. I’m up,” he grunts in return, shoving the weight of her skull and neck off his bladder. 

He doesn’t rush going through his morning routine. Far from it. There’s enough time to get everything done and done right without cutting corners or going fast enough to make a mistake. Liam’s never quick in the mornings. Or he has yet to be in the couple of months since Theo had moved in next door.  Even mostly sightless, he knows the guy’s least favorite time of day is morning, especially early ones, which this clearly is. If the thought of his neighbor’s sleepy voice makes him smile a little, well, that’s between Theo and his mirror. 

Chi’s excited whine, distant like she’s perched in the doorway between the bedroom and hall, pulls him around, his smile widening. The thought that maybe she understands what he’s doing crosses his mind, after all she seems smart enough for it most days. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn’t. Regardless, she eggs him on through getting dressed with little pleading sounds every time he dares to stop moving even for a second. He only gets a little frustrated at it when he’s holding a shirt in either hand, feeling the bottom buttons of the work shirt he swapped out ages ago — square for blue, triangle for black, hexagon for red, and circle for white — and the one he’d sewn into the t-shirt himself. 

“Gimme a minute!” he hisses at her when she whines again, head turning towards her even though with how dim the apartment is he can’t see even her vague outline. 

He’s not usually short with her, even when she’s excited like this, but his gut is twisting around in ways that make him debate running to the bathroom. There’s no reason to put this much thought into it. Grab a shirt and go. All he’s doing is taking Chi out. The only thing that’s off about this is that he’s doing it now rather than later, when the sun’s actually risen and he has any shot at seeing the fuzzy shapes of people or cars, as he normally does. He’s almost kicking himself over it, left hand falling away from the button down to rub uneasily over the thick scar down his chest. There’s a reason he’s doing, just not one that will stand up to any real scrutiny. 

Maybe he could conceive of conceding that it’s a little strange to know Liam’s schedule. Maybe. But, at the same time, it had been one of the most regular, regimented things in his chaos-ridden life for two months. Eight straight weeks of the standard iPhone alarm tone going off at 8:15am every single morning, followed by another at 8:30am. Every day. But, this last week, it had been anything but, changing daily in unpredictable ways. That alone wouldn’t have bothered him. Work was work, and he hasn’t quite figured out all that being a docent entails, or which institution he works at. If he could see, maybe he would have figured it out by now, since most places had logos that were at least semi-identifiable.

His face twists as he rubs at his chest again, fingertips kneading the stiff scar tissue.

Oh Nan what a messy web you are weaving

It's only been 3 episodes and I cannot tell how long this relationship will last since the triangle has begun. Will he remain the "good" guy wishing for a independent wife? Is Guy a red herring who will end up standing by Nan when the truth comes out?

Loved all the plot twists so far dropped and looking forward to seeing how a lot of the couple in the show will fair.

Surprisingly, the only oc of mine to not know how to drive is Hunter. With how he grew up, it just wasn't necessary for him to learn! The rest of them aren't licensed in any other machinery. Though in my heart Emil is forklift certified

June is a homebody to the fullest extent of the word. Living in a town full of tourist traps, she gets turned off from advertisements telling her to go to similar locations.

Carolyn's favorite hobbies include: Fishing, gardening, and writing poetry! She's a lot more shy about her writing compared to her other hobbies though!

Emil has had a couple of tattoos done! One is a small stick n poke from his teens, a very cliche broken heart on his left wrist. The other one was actually done in a tattoo parlor; a green 1-up mushroom from the Mario franchise on the right side of his chest

Whereas Maggie and Hunter couldn't finish college, Carolyn and June are the ones with degrees.

Carolyn has a bachelor's degree in fine arts and June has a DNP, which is a doctorate that would allow her to practice nursing!

When Maggie was younger, she used to play the acoustic guitar as a hobby. Very intermediate player. Though as she grew up, she eventually stopped practicing and abandoned the instrument altogether. If she went up to the attic to retrieve it, she could probably only play a scale and that's it.

Oh just about all of them know how to use a weapon (with the exception of Carolyn. She's more of a pepper spray and run kind of girl). Though if we want any specifics on their preferred weapon: Maggie has a baseball bat, Emil uses his grandfather's pocket knife, Hunter uses a pair of scissors, and June keeps a shotgun and an axe in her home.

Maggie has been a chainsmoker since she was 13/14. A bad habit her mother instilled in her. Although she's loosened up over the years, she tends to have a cigarette when she's feeling nervous.

Alright, I'll play your game.

Red. Originally the character was named Red, back when I was classic cringey 8 year old. Red for like blood because the character uses blood magic.

Idk, but I have kinda decided the instrument associated with the character would be a violin, because of the learning curve attached and the character's arc.

Not really. Uses swords, spears, what have you interchangeably because just makes them with gold magic. Did I mention they use gold magic too?

Part of the character arc. Becomes extremely devious with bending their own weapons and spidermanning places and stuff, but starts with like no tricks.

Wears a red scarf symbolic of their past and a blood-gold alloy longcoat open for the sake of always being able to make a weapon in need. Practicality & aesthetics.

It's a bit of a meme in the series (that will one day exist but not now) that their hair is very anime-like so they're kind of mocked for having a triangle over their face. Bedhead just pops into place with a goofy hair flap.

LOUIS TOMLINSON APPEARED on The Late Late Show to perform his most recent single, “Bigger Than Me.” Performing with his live band and a group of string players, the former One Direction singer showcased an impassioned rendition of the anthemic song.

Tomlinson released “Bigger Than Me,” along with a music video for the track, earlier this month. The single was written by Tomlinson, Rob Harvey, and Red Triangle, and produced by Mike Crossey.

“It was my first moment of excitement making this record, and where it felt we were on to something which honors the live show,” Tomlinson said in a statement. “I’ve always strived to be a very normal, humble person in this life, but there’s a line to that and a responsibility that comes from being in this position. I realized from doing those live shows what it means to my fans and how everything I do is bigger than me. It’s almost a coming of age for myself and putting opinions about myself to the back of my mind and thinking about what it potentially means for other people.”

“Bigger Than Me” will appear on the singer’s sophomore LP, Faith in the Future, which arrives Nov. 11. It features production and songwriting from a vast list of collaborators, including Rob Harvey, Dan Grech, Nico Rebscher, Joe Cross, and Hurts frontman Theo Hutchcraft.

Tomlinson sat down with late-night host Jame Corden ahead of his performance to discuss the album and finding his musical direction as a solo artist. [video]

The musician also professed his love for actor Adrien Brody, who was on the show to discuss his new movie Blonde. [video]

Faith in the Future follows Tomlinson’s debut solo album, Walls, which dropped in 2020. “A lot of people, when they’re first starting out, they develop in the background, trying different things,” Tomlinson told Rolling Stone of his first solo effort after One Direction. “But obviously, I had to do that a little bit more publicly. That’s been definitely been challenging at times. So I’m relieved to have an album that I’m really proud of.”

One Direction does not leave the collective imagination of the teen agers who lived them in the 10s of this millennium and if the triumph of Harry Styles is in everyone’s eyes, Louis Tomlinson’s new single “Bigger than me” has been released since September 1st and is the first taken from his second studio album, “Faith in the Future”, expected on November 11.

The album comes two years later from "Walls," the solo debut of the former One Direction that sold millions of copies worldwide. Written by Louis, Rob Harvey and Red Triangle himself and produced by Mike Crossey (The 1975 and Wolf Alice), "Bigger Than Me" is already doing very well in the charts but, as written, the fever for the former 1Ds is always high.

"While working on this record I realized that what was going on had magic. It looked like we were creating something capable of honoring the live show - says Louis -. I have always tried to be a humble person in this life, but there is a limit and a responsibility that comes from being in my position. I understood, by doing those shows what they mean to my fans and how everything I do is actually bigger than me. It's almost an achievement of the age of majority, putting aside the opinions I can have of myself, to think about what it could mean for other people."

For the new album, in addition to Crossey, Tomlinson collaborated big as Rob Harvey, Dan Grech (The Killers, The Vaccines, Halsey), Nico Rebscher (Alice Merton), Joe Cross (Courteeners) and Hurts frontman Theo Hutchcraft. Around the world with his World Tour, which has crossed the UK, Europe, the United States and South America, with 19 sold out concerts in Latin American palaces, a sold out at London’s Wembley Arena and a show at The Dome in Doncaster (his hometown) in front of his family who saw him cry for happiness.

The tour also arrived in Asia and Australia, with 9 other concerts all sold out. But Louis' journey is one step away from the end and tonight in Milan the curtain will come down. The show will be at the Snai San Siro Racecourse as part of the Milan Summer Festival but the debut for the return to Italy was lived on Wednesday at the Cavea of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome at the top of the capacity, and on September 1st at the Teatro Antico in Taormina with a show of 10 and praise. "Since last February's debut in Dallas - says Louis - I have crossed the United States and Canada, Latin America, Europe and the United Kingdom, Asia and Australia, for a total of 70 shows, and I haven't forgotten the live at the Assago Forum last April that excited me as I was at my first show. Playing live is the best part of my job.

These months around singing and playing flew in a moment and having your affection and such support in places even very far from home is something I never took for granted. Music is nothing without you and Italy has always welcomed me like few other states in the world. This is like going home.'

HAPPY 2022!

Here’s My 10 Most Anticipated 2022 Thai BLs 

Between Us - delayed from 2020, adaptation of spin off novel (Hemp Rope; source The Red Thread --> Until We Meet Again), from Studio Wabi Sabi featuring one of their most popular (and commercially viable) pairs, this has plenty of funding and distribution (WeTV) with established (if inconsistent) BL director New (who did UWMA). Hemp Rope tells WinTeam’s romance from the start, so we might get some recon reboot action (like LBC2). I expect this to be slightly higher heat than what we get from GMMTV. 

Enchanté - delayed from 2021. Secret admirer romance with a touch of Cyrano de Bergerac and dose of Boys Over Flowers from GMMTV. Completed filming and will air in first quarter 2022, stars Book (Friend Forever) opposite new face, with side dishes Fluke Gawin (Mork in Dark Blue Kiss) and Fluke Pusit (Way in The Shipper). Theo returns from France and starts a written flirtation inside a library book (!) at his new uni with the mysterious Enchante. His best friend Ak hunts for Enchante’s real identity, and 4 senior boys step forward - all intersted in dating Theo. Ak might also be in the running. New framework for Thai BL (although not for yaoi) and I’m intrigued. 

Dear Doctor - adapted from a y-novel by HUNGRYBIRD Dear Doctor, I'm Coming For Soul. Wabi Sabi picked up this defunked project and is apparently bringing it back for iQIYI starring Grey Rainbow couple Nut & Karn who are great together and certainly mature and capable leads. A romance between a doctor trying to save his patients and the Grim Reaper, who is both his enemy and lover. It looks like there is also a side couple at the hospital. The gay Doom at Your Service? I LOVE THIS PREMISE!!! 

Vise Versa - GMMTV’s adaptation of a JittiRain y-novel (2gether author), alt reality, bodyswap, soulmates AKA fated mates. Stars Jimmy (Wai from Bad Buddy) + a fresh face. Looks very good, a timeslip alt reality sort of thing. I’m super pleased to see Jimmy get a lead. Also I think one of the characters might be butch (intentionally or not). Which would be a first for GMMTV. 

KinnPorsche - delayed from 2021, book adaptation, mafia/bodyguard romance, lots of production issues (which is why it’s not higher on this list). The titular characters are played by actors new to BL - intentionally; sides include Jeff (of Ingredients) , Tong (TharnType & Second Chance), and Perth (My Engineer). It’s a BIG cast. Mafia kid, Kinn, is assaulted and flees into the arms of student Porsche. Porsche helps Kinn escape and Kinn blackmails him into becoming his bodyguard. Likely to be higher heat. 

The Eclipse - GMMTV bringing us tons of tropes: sinister boarding school, haze the one you love, good boy/bad boy, suspense & horror elements, self acceptance themes, a curse, AND enemies to lovers. Stars First from The Shipper and Khaotung from Tonhon Chonlatee, side dish pairing from FUTS NeoLouis, and Pawin from My Gear and Your Gown. To me this looks like Blacklist meets Great Men Academy but doomy. I really like this pairing and I think they can handle the content. 

Cutie Pie - arranged marriage, age gap, secret identity, cohabitation, rich kid problems, plus he’s in engineering. Stars Zee (Why R U?) as the seme and the uke actor is unknown but looks good, also has MaxNat (Why R U? & Y-Destiny & Close Friend). The sons of two companies are engaged to each other. One doesn’t want an arranged marriage while the other wants to win him over. I happen to adore an arranged marriage trope and I’ve yet to see it in gay romance let alone BL, so I’m intrigued. 

Never Let Me Go - mafia, attack dog (whipping boy + bodyguard), love triangle, obsession, suspense from GMMTV with Jojo of 3 Will Be Free directing, so we know the action parts should be good. I think this is GMMTV’s answer to KinnPorsche but it looks a lot more like Golden Blood. Either way I love a bodyguard romance and PondPhuwin (leads in Fish Upon the Sky) are a good pair I’d like to see get a better series. Also has Aun (Folk from My Gear) and Chimon (My Dear Loser). Feels a little classic yaoi with almost Japanese elements and I’m delighted by the cast. 

Coffee Melody - Cafe set BL starring Pavel (my love) as a barista (2moons2) and Benz as a singer (Call it What You Want) and they look good together but I am worried about the support cast and the plot. Still, it’s Pavel! 

My Only 12% - Studio Wabi Sabi’s y-novel adaptation (author Afterday who also wrote the novel behind Bad Buddy) starring SantaEarth (7 Project) The plot looks a little dull and sad which is why this is at the bottom of this list, but I ADORE Santa & Earth’s chemistry on screen and Wabi Sabi has knocked worse than this out of the park, so fingers crossed 

I don’t necessarily think these are going to be the ones I like the most but these are the ones, from Thailand, that I think are going to be the most interesting (or are staring some of my favorite actors, and I’m just happy to see them back).

light abilities; every inch of julia is a true sunbreaker. unlike most guardians, the titan is bound to the sunbreaker class, and cannot use any other source of light. this restriction only amplifies her connection with the sun, and leaves her burning hotter than most who wield its flare. her solar abilities bleed into her everyday life, with her hair often manifesting itself as her emotional state (smoking when upset, bursting into flames when exciting, etc).

personality ; to call julia "the sun" is simplistic and clichéd, but no less true. despite all she's been through, julia struggles to maintain an upbeat and loving attitude to all those around her. she extends a hand to the helpless, protects both the lightless and her fireteam, and refuses to back down when those need her. she is a sheltering warmth and a guiding light. with every inch of her, she is a titan who swears that she will be the wall. but every wall crumbles, and slowly julia is being worn away. one cannot pour from an empty cup, as it is, and she has been empty for so, so long. she peels away parts of herself to give others room. she chokes back smoke and burns herself at both ends just to ensure the vanguard are safe. she sees her brother's selfishness as something she wishes she could have, and fights to ensure that he can be loved and happy, even as she burns.

related canon events ; theo vesh is julia's twin brother, and the most important person in her life. she would sacrifice her light & life for him. for the purpose of interacting with @exilegend, julia is one of those who answered ikora's call and helped with the events of curse of osiris. generally, julia is part of the events of the rise of iron, the solo hero of the red war, one of those who fought to avenge cayde in forsaken, and came to osiris' aid in lightfall. for seasons, she dealt with calus' bullshit during season of opulence, learned to trust in the drifter in his titular season, joined hands with her brother to rescue saint during season of dawn, defended zavala during season of chosen, and settled into running comms/liaison with the cabal during season of the risen. finally, for raids, julia ran through several attempts at the leviathan, from where she stole her war pups.

Louis Tomlinson shares new track ‘Out Of My System’ and 2023 UK and European tour dates

The former One Direction singer's second solo album, 'Faith In The Future', will land next month

Louis Tomlinson has shared a new track called ‘Out Of My System’ and announced a 2023 UK and European tour – listen to the track below and buy tickets for the tour here.

‘Out Of My System’ is the latest preview of the singer’s second solo album ‘Faith In The Future’, which follows his debut full-length effort, 2020’s ‘Walls’, and will be released on November 11. You can pre-order/pre-save the record here.

Tomlinson’s forthcoming album was produced by Mike Crossey, who’s previously worked with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The 1975 and Wolf Alice. The singer co-wrote the LP alongside The Music frontman Rob Harvey and the songwriting/production team Red Triangle.

Other contributors on ‘Faith In The Future’ include Dan Grech (The Killers, The Vaccines, Halsey), Nico Rebscher (Alice Merton), Joe Cross (Courteeners), and Hurts frontman Theo Hutchcraft.

Speaking to NME backstage at his own Away From Home festival last month, Tomlinson said ‘Faith In The Future’ was inspired by DMAs ‘The Glow’.

“With my first record, I think I’d been a bit close-minded in the sounds that I wanted to produce. There’s a lot of interesting, dance-y elements that they brought into that record with [famed producer] Stuart Price and it just showed me that you can bring in these trendier sounds, but do them in a really authentic way.”

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)

In these days of social isolation, domestic distractions, and pandemic, rare is the feature film that I watch at home in one sitting. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp might have confused me in its opening half-hour but, in the end, commanded my attention for all of its one hundred and sixty-three minutes*. It is a film made during a time of crisis now fading from living memory, from British filmmakers reveling in their work’s Britishness. During Colonel Blimp’s wartime production and release, Britain was under existential threat from the Nazis, despite the opening of the North African front and apparent British victory in defending its airspace. A gentleman's war this was not, if ever such a thing existed. British cinema reflected those beliefs of the nation staring down its own annihilation, as the industry set to work on patriotic, if not propagandistic, movies.

There is no denying that Powell and Pressburger’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp has elements of propaganda. The film, so resistant to any categorizations by genre (including comedy, drama, epic, romance, war), has no qualms that Britain is fighting a just war against Nazi Germany. But there are moments that must have given British Prime Minister Winston Churchill – who attempted to halt Colonel Blimp’s production and distribution – pause. Powell and Pressburger raise questions towards the justifications and necessity of past British wars, the idea of warfare as a noble exercise, and introduces a “good German” character. Colonel Blimp’s genre-bending and provocative queries into Britain’s militant soul represents the most breathtaking balancing act in any of Powell and Pressburger’s movies.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp takes place over three time periods, each in a different setting:

Boer War (the common name for what is technically the Second Boer War): 1902 in Berlin, far from the violence in southern Africa

World War I and between the World Wars: from November 1918-1935 between the Western Front and postbellum Britain

World War II: from 1939 through the Battle of Britain (1940), mostly in the London area

The film begins near its chronological conclusion, when the rotund, mustachioed, Major-General Clive Wynne-Candy (Roger Livesey; whose role is modeled off of the “Colonel Blimp” comic strip character’s appearance and mannerisms) is surprised to be “captured” by Lieutenant Spud Wilson (James McKechnie) during a premature training exercise. Candy, who is trying to enjoy his afternoon at his favorite Turkish bath, is outraged at Wilson’s disregard to the exercise’s rules, and fisticuffs break out. From here, Colonel Blimp flashes back to Candy’s service in the Boer War and sticks to a strict chronology. Then-Lt. Candy is in Berlin, on leave from his service in the Boer War. There, he has a series of misadventures (and a love triangle) involving Edith Hunter (Deborah Kerr in one of three separate roles she plays) and an officer from the Imperial German Army named Theo Krestchmar-Schuldorff (Anton Walbrook). All three become friends while in Berlin; Theo and Edith become engaged shortly before Candy must leave Berlin.

We never see Edith (who stays in Germany with Theo) again in Colonel Blimp, but Theo – even though his time with Candy was relatively brief – remains friends with Candy. That friendship, however, conflicts against and interweaves into his German patriotism. Theo’s patriotism is not unconditional: he believes fervently in the aims of Imperial Germany in World War I’s immediate aftermath, but flees Hitler’s Nazi regime for soil his wife once called home. Taking account of all English-language cinema, he becomes a rare “good German”. In a person that a xenophobic British person might consider the enemy, we see a man heartbroken for the fate that befalls his native country and the violence waged against his adopted one.

Take the cruelly ironic scene of Theo visiting Candy after being released from a prisoner of war (POW) camp, as he ingratiates himself with Candy’s British dinner guests. Candy’s friends remark that British hospitality and organization must have eased the lives of the POWs, and the insinuate that British-German tensions shall soon wane. Germany will soon recover from the war, the dinner guests maintain. Notice Anton Walbrook’s physical acting here, acting as a man too polite to belabor his fellow guests with his sadness for his country and the anger of their presumptuous predictions. The Austrian actor, perhaps best known as Boris Lermontov from The Red Shoes (1948), provides a stupendous performance, most likely the widest-ranging one of his career. He inhabits his character’s contradictions of all three eras: the martial rigidity and playfulness of his Boer War-era youth, the defiance and disappointment following the Great War, and the sadness and pent-up fury of his elderly years. This is quite demanding for any actor, let alone someone who is nominally in a supporting role. Yet, a particular interview scene might represent the best piece of acting in any Powell and Pressburger picture. Walbrook performs spectacularly, with never a wasted motion or a dull moment from him.

Personal change comes much more slowly to Lieutenant-later-General Candy. This is as much for the purposes of the film’s chronological drama as it is a product of World War II-era remembrance. At this time in British filmmaking, one could not make narrative art deemed too critical of Britain’s bloody past – whether colonial or against its European rivals. For a film that engages so vigorously in a discourse concerning jus in bello, it portrays zero wartime violence. Meditations of war arrive solely in conversation, never action. In Candy’s indefatigable Britishness, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp affirms his views that the Boer War and World War I were and are just conflicts, fought justly. He does not thirst for violence, nor does he dismiss the traumas war brings to combatants and civilians alike (he may downplay those traumas, though). Candy’s flawed introspection and stubbornness are endearing, at first. As time progresses, those qualities come ever into conflict with the changing nature of warfare and the contexts of the war currently waged. Britain is and will always be above committing war atrocities, Candy believes (you can roll your eyes; it is the least you should do after reading those last few words), and Nazi Germany’s tactics will never succeed in the face of Britain’s upstanding military. Such thinking was outdated even then, and only through his friendship with Theo does he consider how wrong he is.

Roger Livesey might not have been Powell and Pressburger’s first choice as Candy (that would be Laurence Olivier, who probably would have made Candy a more sophisticated character), but he embodies a contradictory gruffness and gentleness that weaves between military and civilian life. Those qualities are on full display when Livesey captures the attention of Deborah Kerr’s characters. In addition to Walbrook’s turn as Theo, Livesey and Kerr offer wonderful performances that cement the film’s Britishness. Through the three eras covered in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Candy’s relationship with these women evolves as he ages, as the nature of the Britain’s conflicts make romance unwise. Kerr’s three characters might have different life interests, romantic inclinations, and temperaments, but their similar appearances – no coincidence, as the viewer later learns – anchor Candy to a perpetual past.

The striking Technicolor photography from Georges Périnal (1930’s Under the Roofs of Paris, 1948’s The Fallen Idol) with assistance from Jack Cardiff (1947’s Black Narcissus, 1951’s The African Queen) and production design from Alfred Junge (Black Narcissus, 1953’s Knights of the Round Table) makes The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp one of the most arresting Technicolor productions ever. The vibrancy of the colors leap from the screen – even the gray interiors of modern buildings and the browns of the World War I trenches and wooden panels of Candy’s estate. One crane shot of Candy and Theo during their first encounter – a swordsmen’s duel inside a cavernous hall, away from the freezing storm outdoors – and the fade into the shot of a building model gives the film the feel of an oral history where the most dynamic moments can never be truly captured. Those moments of action blur into Candy’s memory, as tangible now as the buildings inside a snow globe. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp might not have the dedication to visual leitmotif as The Red Shoes does, but its visual interest outstrips all but the most masterful Technicolor pictures of the 1940s.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was cognizant of the buffoonish Colonel Blimp and, in addition to Lieutenant-later-General Candy, believed the characters were modeled after his appearance and behavior. Furthermore, considering how Powell and Pressburger imbued Theo with such humanity, Churchill – who had only read of the filmmakers’ preliminary plans for their film and never saw any footage – believed that The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp would only undermine morale for the war effort. In response, Churchill directed his Minister of War, Sam James Grigg, to suppress the picture to the extent that he could. Grigg denied Powell and Pressburger access to matériel, but the filmmakers had friends in the correct places to procure military uniforms, vehicles, and weapons necessary for their production. Despite Powell and Pressburger’s resourcefulness, Churchill succeeded in preventing the international distribution The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp for at least one year after its 1943 release. The film’s American debut would not occur until March 1945. For the American release, the film lost thirteen minutes of its 163-minute runtime; television screenings further reduced the work to ninety minutes up until the mid-1980s.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp might not seem like accessible viewing. This is a tale of an aging British military officer clinging to the ideals of his militaristic youth, long after when such ideals had purpose, let alone meaning to the young people of his present. It is rooted deeply into early twentieth century British culture, with an opening that might only serve to confuse a new viewer as it transitions to flashbacks. However, like any Powell and Pressburger film (and this might not even be the duo’s best work), there is much to offer. This is a love story, with love shown in various forms: for the first true love of Candy’s life, for the man who should be his enemy, for country. The genre gymnastics on display – a war film with nary any war violence; a romance without torrents of romance; a comedy without boisterous belly laughs – allow any caring viewer to witness General Candy grow into his times, all while retaining traces of a self that no longer is. That growth is subtle, but enveloping. His story feels like the origins of present-day Britain, its empire slipping away, wresting with a world no longer bowing in deference. As we must guard against the unexamined life, so too, Candy realizes, must he.

Sorry… Do you want the wi-fi password?” “Haha, no, it's okay… I'll manage.”

Once the bathroom door closed, Theo curled up under the covers in shame. He didn't know what came over him, but he suddenly just felt like everything was completely wrong. But why? He was living through a fantasy; this tall hot dark elf man was here in his apartment wanting to have sex with him and they were both turned on so…why did it feel so wrong? After two minutes Korsy came back, his pants done up but his sculpted chest still on full display. He looked guilty, but trying to look unbothered as he sat back down on the bed. “I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable or…” Korsy rubbed his neck. “I mean, I don't know what to say…” “Don't, you did nothing wrong at all…” Theo said. “I don't know what's wrong with me right now… I was really excited, but I just… I don't think I can have sex like this…” “Maybe is it the pregnancy?” Korsy asked. “I heard it can affect libido and stuff…” “I don't know… I don't think so…” Theo sat up and rubbed his knees. “I just… I don't think I can have sex outside of a relationship…” “Ohhhh… Okay, no, that's totally chill.” Korsy chuckled. “I get that.” “You do?” Theo asked. “Well, obviously I don't feel that way myself, but I understand that it's a requirement for a lot of people,” Korsy said. “I totally respect that.” Theo looked at Korsy and pouted. “I'm really sorry.” “Naw, naw, please don't apologise,” Korsy said. “The last thing I want is to put you through sex you're not comfortable having. I'm glad you asked me to stop.” “I just wish I was all the way in it with you…” Theo sighed. “Like, I don't want to ruin your night.” “You can't and you didn't. I'm not upset. I'm not disappointed. I'm not mad. And even if you did ‘ruin my night', which you didn’t, it's way more important that you feel comfortable.” “Well… Thanks, Korsy…” Theo said. “You're a good guy…” “Trying my best,” Korsy said. “At the end of the day, sex is different for us and we weren't compatible. That's all.” Theo nodded quietly. Korsy patted Theo's knee. “Do you want a hug?” Theo nodded again and opened his arms. “Please.” Korsy scooted closer to him and wrapped his arms around the pregnant man. “It's alright, okay? Just relax… We can keep talking elf stuff… Or I can get out of here if you'd rather that…” “Can you stay, actually?” Theo asked, hugging him back. “If you can… You don't have to…” “I can stay.” Korsy rubbed Theo's back then let go. “I'm a little thirsty though… Mind if I grab a glass of water?” “Yeah, I have a pitcher in the fridge,” Theo said. “There's also juice or some ginger ale, I think…” Korsy got off the bed. “Do you want anything?” “Ginger ale?” Theo requested. “Please.” “No problem. I'll be right back.” Korsy disappeared down the hall for a few minutes. Theo still felt very embarrassed, but he could feel himself calming down. He didn't expect Korsy to be as nice about all this as he was and it was a bit overwhelming. When Korsy got back with two glasses, he handed Theo his ginger ale and then sat back down. “You have a nice place. Balcony's a good view.” “Thanks.” Theo took a sip of his ginger ale and suddenly realised how parched he was. He hadn't really eaten or drunk anything since before the group meeting. “Street gets a bit noisy, but I like it…” “I saw a bowl on the balcony. Do you have a cat?” Korsy asked. “Doesn’t smell like it.” “No, there's just a building cat that stops by every once in a while,” Theo said. “And you feed it? How noble.” “I guess… They’re good company.” “That's fair.” “Do you have any pets?” Theo asked. “I do actually,” Korsy said. “My girl, Adelaide.” “What is she, a dog?” “A snake actually,” Korsy said. “Ah, so you're a snake guy,” Theo said. “You say that like it's weird.” “It's not weird… Just different.” Korsy pulled his leg up to rest on the bed and leaned back. “I don't like all snakes. Just Adelaide.” “It's fine, I'm not judging you,” Theo said. “It's not like you have a snake tattoo.” “Well…” Korsy rubbed his neck. “Not exactly…” Theo's eyes widened. “Show me. Where?” Korsy sighed and pulled up his pant leg. Where Theo expected to see skin and ink he actually was surprised to find a prosthetic leg with a snake engraved down the back of the calf. “Oh, so cool!” Theo admired. “I wouldn't even have guessed… And never seen such sleek prosthetic before…” “Elven tech,” Korsy said before pulling his pant leg back down. “No touching.” “No worries, I won't,” Theo said. “But can I ask—” “Injury, not congenital,” Korsy stated. “And no, I don't want to talk about it.” “Oh, okay. That's fine,” Theo said. “Thanks for telling me.” “No worries.” Korsy took a drink from his cup. “Oh, and I went for the juice. I haven't had Tropicana in a long time.” “Yeah, I've been craving orange juice lately,” Theo said. “Do you wanna see my tattoos?” “Sure. I saw that nerd circle on your wrist,” Korsy pointed out. “What else you got? “Um, just this…” Theo pulled up his shirt sleeve to show the Tri-Force. “Eh, nerd triangle. Theo looked around for his phone and found it in his pants on the floor. “Sorry, no ringer… But didn't you have a date?” “Yeah, we finished. Can't you tell?” Henderson lifted his shirt and proudly patted his slightly distended belly. “Yulinian, nice,” Korsy complimented. “Looks like a good egging.” “Right? I'm fucking stuffed,” Henderson said. “Anyway, I'll get out of your hair. I’m not allowed to keep these. You kids have fun.” “Thanks, man,” Korsy said. Henderson ducked out and the door closed behind him. Korsy turned to find Theo now buried under the covers. The elf patted where he expected Theo's head to be. “Not a roommate?” Korsy asked. “No… He's just a friend…��� “But you like him.” “What? No…” Korsy chuckled. “Come on, you went beet red when you heard his voice. Don't act like you're not into him.” Theo pulled the covers down. “Henderson and I wouldn't work. He's not right for me.” “Why? He cares a lot about you,” Korsy said. “Please, just leave it.” “Okay, okay…” Korsy shrugged. “But tell me, why did you act like you've never met an elf before?” “What do you mean?” Theo asked. “You're the first elf I've ever met.” “Oh, come on,” Korsy said. “You're telling me that someone as obsessed as you are can't even tell that guy is an elf?” Theo pulled a face. “Who, Henderson?” “Uh, who else?” “Henderson is not an elf,” Theo said. “I would know.” “Yeah, you should know. I’m 100% sure of that.” Theo pouted. “Why wouldn’t he tell me?” “That’s between you two,” Korsy said. “But you should talk to him. Like, what’s stopping you?” “You just saw, he can get anyone he wants!” Theo said. “He just fucked a Yulinian! I can’t compare to that.” “Theo, I think you’ve got some stuff to work through,” Korsy said. “Elf, Yulinian, human… No species is above another. Preference is fine, but at the end of the day, the people that care about you do so simply because they care about you. If you grew a tail and horns tomorrow, you won’t be any more important or special than you are today.” Theo frowned and covered his face. “You’re right, I’m sorry…” “Don’t be.” “No, I used you,” Theo said. “I treated you like a novelty just because you’re an elf…” “Don’t sweat it,” Korsy said. “I’m hot. Hi, I was worried about sharing this, but I guess I’d really like to. I want to add that no matter how many projects you see here, it’s really just because I have an overactive imagination. I’m not working on all of these concurrently. Some are farther into planning than others, but that’s just how it goes.
