Yes, this was considered sexy, in its time.  Very, very sexy, provocative, and enticing.

So was long hair--if you had super long hair in Japan during a certain era, you could literally have buck teeth and pimples but still be considered incredibly sexy.  Same with showing off the nape of the neck, very daring and alluring.

Writers, artists...human beings (homo sapiens) have been this way for a VERY long time.  The sorts of stuff found written on the walls of the houses and apartments and businesses in the ruins of Pompeii are very similar to the kinds of stuff I can see any time I want, just by visiting the AFK Tavern in Everett (major city north of Seattle) and using the ladies’ restrooms.  Exact. Same. Stuff. Written. On. The. Walls.  From two thousand years ago to today.

So you can bet there were bodyparts that were absolutely smokin’ hawt in caveman days.

And no, we are not the culture that shows off the most skin.  There are tribal nations in southeast Asia where the men go naked except for a penis gourd held in place by a string...and yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like.  They grou a special kind of gourd, dry them carefully, hollow out one that should fit, stuff their genitalia up inside, and tie it around their waist with a string...and yes, the gourds can be as long as the length of their whole torso, whether or not the stuffed contents might be.

This is clothing for these men.  It is required clothing, in their culture.  They feel naked without one, and are naked without one, even if you put one of these fellows into a 3-piece Armani suit, replete with shoes and socks and every inch of skin covered save for their faces and necks plus their wrists and hands.

Nudity, prudity, it doesn’t matter, because it doesn’t last.  Each region, each era, each generation, will decide for themselves what is right and proper to wear...

...Which means your characters in your stories, their homeland cultures, will need to consider two things:  Appropriate Settling Conditions (weather, climate, working attire, etc), and Cultural Significance Conditions.

Penis sheath gourds are worn in a tropical environment in low-lying mountains, where the inhabitants who practice this particular culture never (or at least very rarely) have to deal with truly cold weather.  I can’t remember the name of the tribe, but they live an exceptionally different life from, say, the Maasai in Africa, or the Inuit in the northernmost stretches of North America.

In the case of the Maasai, they live in a hot environment, too, but it’s not quite the same latitude.  They are not protected by tropical forests and frequent rain clouds; they live on the savannahs under an often burning hot sun, so they wear a bit more in the way of clothing.  They also have a very complex culture, which includes quite a lot of culturally significant ornamentation...which an Armani suit, 2 piece or 3 piece, simply cannot convey.

Inuit folks, of course, are going to wear a lot more insulative layers in the winter...but they still aren’t as likely to feel properly dressed if given that same three piece Armani suit.  (No matter how fine the wool or silk it’s made from, it’s going to be too thin to ward off taiga or tundra mosquitoes in the summer, and lethally too thin in the winter to ward off literally freezing to death.

Many Inuit might wear a lot of modern synthetic clothes...but tbh, there’s several thousand years of lived experience in their traditional clothes, of a trimmed, scraped, shaped, but still technically rawhide summer reindeer/caribou hide or sealskin fur turned into a parka.  It’s made of furs that have hollow tubes, meaning maximum insulative value, with wolverine fur trimming the hood (frost from your breath slips off rather than building up).

And yes, it IS rawhide, not smoke-tanned, or brain-tanned, or treated to be water-resistant.  Why? Because the tanning process makes it waterproof, and that’s a bad thing in extremely cold conditions. The folks who survived living near or within the Arctic circle for thousands of years learned early on that allowing bodily moisture (sweat) to get trapped under one’s clothes actually increases the chance of dying via hypothermia.  Rawhide allows the moisture to pass through the hide and along the shafts of the hairs to the outermost edges, where the extreme cold freezes it as ice crystals.

(Bonus factoid:  Igloos meant for living in for several days while hunting in a particular area--and not, say, strictly for emergency shelter use--are almost always built with a sort of vestibule where certain garments clothing can be laid out to freeze. Once frozen, it can be whacked to break off and shed any ice crystals that have accumulated on the surface, rendering the garment technically dry and wearable again.  it is important to allow the clothing to freeze before it becomes soaking wet, because once wet, the water-penetrable rawhide must be stretched repeatedly until it dries, or it, well, dries as hard as rawhide. (A genuine factoid and not merely a tautology.)  They can also have a fire inside the igloo, just warm enough to keep things above freezing and to allow non-rawhide garments to be slowly dried over the cooking & lighting fire provided by the long trough of seal fat, but if they can freeze it and beat it free of ice crystals, that’s the primary method of getting their clothes dry.)

Every culture is going to have different ideas on what’s hot & what’s not, each and every day, month, year, decade, and/or century.  And tying those things together with certain constantly recurring themes will be the setting (temperature, weather, even working conditions such as rugged clothes for those who are mining ores underground, or delicate floaty garments for those dancing and swaying on an entertainment stage), and/or a definite item or habit of cultural significance (such as wearing a particular Scottish tartan weaving pattern proclaiming a clan kinship or other official affinity).

Artists and writers, we can choose which types of cultural clothing habits our characters and their backgrounds (literal or metaphoric) could have.  And yes, you could have a Maasai character wearing a snazzy 3 piece suit (Alan Dean Foster did this exact thing in one of his stories)...but if they’re not living in a city, then they’ll need to have a reason to wear that suit, instead of a shuka, the colorful body-wrap garment that they traditionally wear.  (Foster’s character needed to visit America for Plot Reasons...so he dug out an old suit, and wore it to go to America.)

So seeing all those European male legs in those form-fitted shapely silk stockings may seem silly for our time, but trust me, they were dead-sexy for the timeframe in which those paintings were made.

They aren’t flat-out pornographic (those things DID exist, too, though were & are very hard to find), but, well...those paintings were the equivalent of all those black-and-white abs-on-display images from Abercrombie & Fitch stores that we’ve been seeing for the last few decades here in the modern era.

You’re looking at the equivalent of Abercrombie & Fitch advertising, or maybe GQ magazine cover shots.
