Your heart pounded in your chest, each beat a reminder of the high stakes of this confrontation. You could feel the weight of his scrutiny bearing down on you, yet you refused to back down. “I speak the truth, regardless of who is listening.”

Taesan tilted his head slightly, his gaze lingering on you with a curious intensity. His eyes seemed to flicker with interest, as though he were weighing not just your words but the very essence of your defiance. There was a moment of silence between you, a palpable pause where the world outside ceased to exist, leaving only the two of you locked in this silent battle of wills. You could almost feel the heat of the prince’s scrutiny, mingling with the warmth of the afternoon sun that streamed through the open windows.

“Very well,” Taesan said finally, his voice soft but carrying an unmistakable edge of challenge. “Prove to me that this zither is worthy of its commission. Show me why I should not cast it aside as a piece of inferior workmanship.”

Your eyes narrowed, and you felt a surge of anger rise within you. “And how would Your Highness suggest I do that?”

“Play it,” he replied simply, his tone almost indifferent, as if the request were a trivial matter. “If the instrument is truly as magnificent as you claim, then it should speak for itself.”

For a moment, you hesitated, the weight of his words pressing down on you. Playing the zither in front of the prince, especially under such contentious circumstances, was not something you had anticipated. The challenge was daunting, but your pride in your father’s craft and your own resolve left you with little choice.

Without a word, you moved towards the zither. Your fingers lightly brushed against the polished wood, feeling the cool, smooth surface beneath them. As you carefully lifted the instrument from its stand, you could sense Taesan’s piercing gaze on you, his expression inscrutable as you positioned the zither on your lap. The market, once a bustling hive of activity, seemed to hold its breath. The noise of haggling voices and the clinking of coins faded into a distant murmur as you prepared to play.

You placed your fingers gently on the strings, taking a deep breath before you plucked the first note. The sound that emerged was clear and resonant, a single, pure tone that hung in the air like a delicate bell. You continued to play, your movements fluid and practiced, each note flowing effortlessly into the next. The melody that emerged was hauntingly beautiful, weaving a tapestry of sound that seemed to echo with the emotions and artistry your father had poured into the zither.

As you played, you couldn’t resist glancing at Taesan, curious about his reaction. His face remained an inscrutable mask, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—perhaps a trace of admiration, or at least an acknowledgment of the skill with which you played.

You finished the piece with a final, lingering note, letting the sound slowly fade into the silence that enveloped the store. The marketplace noise seemed to return gradually, a reminder of the world outside. For a moment, neither of you spoke, the silence stretching between you.

Taesan broke the quiet, his voice softer than before but still edged with his earlier aloofness. “You play well. But a skilled musician does not necessarily make for a skilled craftsman.”

Your temper flared at his continued arrogance, but you kept your voice steady, fighting to maintain your composure. “It is not my skill that is in question here, Your Highness. It is the craftsmanship of the zither.”

Taesan’s gaze remained fixed on you, and a small, enigmatic smile played on his lips. “Indeed. And I find that while the instrument itself is passable, it is the player who truly brings it to life.”

You bristled at the backhanded compliment, unsure whether to feel insulted or begrudgingly pleased. Before you could respond, Taesan reached out, his fingers brushing against the zither’s strings. The sound that emerged was a soft, discordant note that contrasted sharply with the melody you had played. The prince’s touch, though gentle, seemed to momentarily disrupt the harmony you had created, adding a layer of complexity to the already tense interaction.

Taesan’s gaze remained locked on you, as if daring you to react. The subtle challenge in his eyes and the delicate touch of his fingers on the zither’s strings created a dynamic of unspoken competition between the two of you, a silent duel where skill and pride were the stakes.

“It is flawed,” Taesan murmured, his tone contemplative and distant, as if he were speaking more to himself than to you. “But perhaps there is potential here.”

The ambiguity of his words was maddening, leaving you unsure whether he was referring to the zither or to your own capabilities. You met his gaze, your eyes narrowing with suspicion and frustration. “What exactly are you implying?”

Taesan looked up from the zither, his smile widening just enough to reveal a hint of amusement. “I am suggesting that both you and your father possess talent, but talent alone is insufficient. It requires refinement and perfection. There is ample room for improvement.”

His dismissive attitude was infuriating, and you opened your mouth to defend your father’s work, to argue the worth of the craftsmanship that had been so painstakingly created. But Taesan raised a hand, a gesture that stopped you in your tracks. “Do not interpret my words as an insult but rather as a challenge. If you are determined to prove me wrong, then you have a week to do so. I will return then to see what changes you have made.”

With that, he turned abruptly, his robes flowing around him as he began to walk away. The graceful, deliberate stride with which he exited only fueled your anger. How dared he criticize your father’s work so lightly? How could he suggest that you were anything less than proficient, especially after you had poured so much of yourself into defending the quality of the zither?

As Taesan disappeared into the throng of the marketplace, you were left standing there, stunned and seething with a mix of fury and disbelief. The encounter had felt far from resolved. There was something in the way he had looked at you, a glimmer of expectation or perhaps a challenge that hinted at a deeper, unspoken meaning.

You watched him vanish into the sea of bustling activity, your heart still pounding with a restless combination of anger and intrigue. This was not the end of your dealings with Prince Taesan, of that you were certain. The way he had scrutinized you, the challenge in his voice—everything suggested that this was merely the beginning.

As you turned back to your stall, the zither and other pieces of your father's work seemed to take on a new significance. The sting of Taesan's critique and the weight of his challenge lingered, mingling with your determination.

art vs industry

Sometimes I'm having a good day, but then sometimes I think about how industry is actively killing creative fields and that goes away. People no longer go to woodworkers for tables and chairs and cabinets, but instead pick from one of hundreds of mass-produced designs made out of cheap particle board instead of paying a carpenter for furniture that is both made to last generations and leaves room for customization. With the growth of population and international trade, the convenience and low production costs are beneficial in some aspects, but how many local craftsmen across the world were put out of business? How many people witnessed their craft die before their eyes? There is no heart or identity put into mass produced items; be it furniture, ceramics, metalwork, or home decor; and at the end of the day everybody ends up with the same, carbon copy stuff in their homes.

I'm a big fan of animated movies, and I see this same thing happening too. When was the last time western audiences saw a new 2D animated movie hit theatres? I can't speak for other countries, but, at least in America, I believe The Princess and the Frog was the last major 2D movie released and that was back in 2009. Major studios nowadays are unwilling to spend the time and money that it would take to pay traditional animators who have spent years honing their craft to go frame by frame, and to pay painters to create scene backgrounds. We talk a lot about machines replacing jobs, but when the machines come, artistry professions are some of the first to be axed (in part because industry does not see artistry as "valuable" professions). Art, music, and writing are no longer seen as "real" jobs because they belong to the creative field and there's this inane idea that anyone who goes into those fields will be unsuccessful and starving. I'm not saying that 3D animation is bad, it has its own merits and required skills and can be just as impressive as anything 2D, but it has smothered 2D animation and reduced it largely to studios that cannot afford the tech to animate 3D.

And now we have this whole AI thing to deal with, stealing existing artists' work to "train" it to take over those few professions that, until now, required actual people to do them. Internet artists have already been dealing with people complaining about the price of art for years and now have to face their work being stolen to train AI. With AI technology, anyone who undervalues the work of the artist can now get something generated at little or no cost to them, all at the expense of the artists themselves. Why would studios pay script writers when they could just get an algorithm to do it without pay? Why pay actors to bring characters to life or pay models to pose for ads when CGI has progressed enough we could digitally render humans and cut out having to pay people entirely? Why use practical effects or film on location when green screens and adding in-post is faster and so much cheaper? It's no wonder we had the SAG-AFTRA strike. AI has already been trained to write children's books and produce music, continuing down this road will replace authors and musicians too at the convenience of cost. How much longer until the actual, real-life people behind all forms of artistry become completely obsolete?

Industry is just driving the cost of people-made crafts up and up with every mass produced product and every streamlined shortcut to reduce costs, which only makes it harder and harder for artists of all kinds to make a living, as very few people want to pay for the time and skill of artists when they could just pick something off a shelf or feed AI a prompt and get something satisfactory enough, yet not what they actually wanted, for so much cheaper.

I may have unlocked the secret to creating peace in my brain! The answer was painting tons of tiny little dashes.

I've been trying to learn more art techniques, specifically to help improve my artistry in the shop. I don't have any sort of art education, so I just dive in and try things out.

This piece came about because our living room is decorated with a Detroit art theme and I've been searching for one finishing piece. So, I just decided to make it myself for now.

I have fallen in love with painting. I don't even care if my stuff is "good" in any traditional sense. The peace and joy it brings is so worth it.

Don't worry, pen making and woodwork are still our passion. This is just a nice way to turn off my brain at night before bed.

So, this is me telling you to get out there and try some new things! Creating something is so fulfilling. We have made plenty of fancy firewood, they aren't all going to be winners. Just get out there and enjoy the process!

Zutara Week 2023 - Day 1: Home

Her fingertips brush gently across the smooth carved oak surface of the armoire. Each perfectly chosen chisel stroke contributes to the comforting flow of her room. Her eyes drift through the rest of the space; the woodwork meanders like water, curving, ebbing, and eddying throughout the artistry of each piece of furniture. A wardrobe of similar craft sits next to the window. Thick dark curtains are pulled back to let in the evening’s moonlight. Atop luxurious surfaces live small paintings, snapshots of moments in time. The sight of her father, brother, and grandmother’s images ignite her smile. She lets out a contented sigh as her eyes fall on the final frame, a depiction of her husband and two children in front of a beach house. 

A stack of carelessly thrown, yet still organized sun hats rest on the corner chair next to the dressing mirror. A light nightgown hangs from there, perched beside its reflection, discarded until its duty is next called. Her smile diminishes marginally as her eyes pan through the rest of the space, realizing the empty feeling in the room filled with things.

Journeying out from the room, she is surrounded by ornamental purple silks mingled with reds and some blues decorating the walls. Adopting a leisurely pace while traversing the halls, she recalls the recently changed aesthetic. Gone is the darkness and overbearing decoration, in favor of more open space, room to breathe. The hallways are more well-lit and brighter, such a change from the dark overbearing presence the place held when she first arrived.

Stopping before a large set of doors, she thinks back. She’s called many places around the world temporary houses, from the South and North Poles, to the back of Appa, to a house in the upper ring of the Earth Kingdom. She frowns at the lack of permanence any of them held.

Pushing the doors open, she is greeted by streams of cool moonlight filtering through the yet unblossomed fruit trees of the gardens. Walking out toward the glistening pool that houses her husband’s favorite small animal friends, she hears laughter and giggling floating across the garden. The sound is contagious, and she finds herself smiling as she rounds the corner. 

The familiar voice of her love calls out to her, “Katara?”

It is followed quickly by excited yelps and screeches as her children cry out “Mom!”

She feels her cheek muscles stretch and begin to hurt as her kids rush over and hug her. She closes her eyes and takes in the feeling, drinking it in as if it would disappear the next moment. 

The strong arms of the Fire Lord embrace her as he looks at her questioningly. “Weren’t you supposed to be in Ba Sing Se until next week?”

She gazes back into his golden eyes and leans into his hug. “We finished up business early.” Giving only a momentary pause, she places a loving peck on his lips. “Besides, I missed all of you. I missed this place. I missed home.”

The Sims 4 Announces Two New Kits: “Storybook Nursery” and “Artist Studio”

Following a leak earlier this week, EA has just officially announced two new kits for The Sims 4. Both had already been confirmed on the latest roadmap.

The Storybook Nursery Kit was developed in collaboration with CC creator @SixamCC. As its name suggests, it brings a whole new look to infants and toddlers bedrooms, including a changing table and a playmat (both had previously only been available on the Growing Together expansion pack).

And as for the Artist Studio Kit, there are several different options for you to build a creative space. And, for the first time in ten years, we finally get another woodworking table.

Instead, something more lighthearted. Yesterday, I went to a market in the city and found an artist who worked in spun sugar. They were quite beautiful and pristine, as if he’d managed to make the impermanence of ice, permanent. 

Are there any types of interesting artistry (traditional or otherwise) that you’ve seen in Acroite? Or in your travels?

You did not overstep. Please do not apologize. My family is a rather complicated subject and I do not wish to sully the positive tone of our letters to one another.

I have seen the artistry of spun sugar and was equally impressed. We have a chef here who is gifted in such ways and he creates the most beautiful works of art out of something as simple as chocolate. If you ever come to Acroite, you must look in on the shop run by Amaury. I promise you will not regret taking the time.

Traditional artistry for Acroite is woodworking, which I have mentioned I dabble in, as well as textile painting, metalworks, paper cutting, pottery, costuming to name a few.

I must keep this short as I have a pressing engagement with several of the local judges but as always, your kind letter is a most welcome reprise from the rapid pace of daily responsibilities.
