Niddy Noddy: Yarn to Skein, Balls to Skein
This is one of those gadgets which makes dealing with yarn so much easier for the artisan. Spinners use it into turn yarn coming off a wheel into a skein, and yarn dyers use it to take a ball of yarn and turn it into a skein too. Of course, this is a very old tool, and there are mechanized versions to do all of this, but part of the pleasure here is the simplicity and the effectiveness.
You hold the central bar and then wrap the yarn around the two other pieces which have bumps at their ends (save one end for sliding the skein off). You can see the ball of yarn in a dark green yarn bowl on the floor just below my right hand which is bringing the yarn around from one bar to the other. The left then hand then tips up and down over and over to make the looping easier.
The repetitive motion is where the names comes from as its original use in the 1600s came from someone nodding off to sleep, which turned into a word for a foolish person as well in the 1700s, and finally the name of the the gadget in the late 19th century. All this according to the Oxford English Dictionary which traces the use of words over time.  This niddy noddy breaks down into 3 pieces and is one of the larger ones. I got it used and I like to think someone else got some use and pleasure out of it before I did, just as I enjoy knowing I am using a word of such ancient origins. You can find pretty and more utilitarian ones at your fiber supplier.

Bracket = Codpiece
Tumblr media
There are a few steps, but our word 'bracket' comes from 'braguette' meaning 'codpiece', due to some vague shape similarity. 'Brag' also comes from this codpiece term, so not so different in concept from expressions of today like 'dick measuring'

@sunoo-bby putting this in a post bc it's kinda long
the f slur originally referred to a bundle of sticks, then was used to refer to a burdensome woman because they were seen as awkward and hard to care for, just like carrying a bundle of sticks. due to a history of them being associated with women because they were viewed (and still are viewed) as feminine (almost like them being called queen but more mean than slay). the slur is now a derogatory term used against all queer folks to make fun of them, put them down, call them out, etc whatever ppl use slurs for idk

I'm sorry but fuck is not and has never been an acronym. Per wordorigins: "Finally, we can certainly dispense with a few of the more egregious legendary etymologies of the word. It is not an acronym for either Fornication Under Consent of the King or For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge or for anything else. Acronyms such as these are unknown before the late nineteenth century and not at all common until the twentieth." This is easy to google! It's okay to admit you were wrong about something. The people who made that post aren't lying and haven't fallen for misinformation – you have.
I appreciate you reaching out to me like this. Its important to have a dialogue about these things. However its also important to recognize when you are proven wrong and to accept that. Its an easy mistake to make, we all use the word fuck day to day and never really think about where it came from. However if you look into it you can discover a fascinating history about an abbreviation marking an allowance from a king into the modern word that we all use today. I hope you take this to heart and are more willing to accept new information in the future.

JusJoJan24 - 1/7/2024 Curious as a Cat #jusjojan24 #wordorigins
Biel Morro | Unsplash I was curious about the origin of the saying Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back. Evidently, the phrase curiosity killed the cat began as a Shakespearean phrase that care killed the cat, and he borrowed the phrase from playwright Ben Johnson. In Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing, Claudio says, “What, courage man! what though care killed a cat,…

«Frazzle—colloquial term meaning to wear or ravel away; fray. Also a frayed end. One who looks frazzled is shabby or untidy.”
Many words that started as technical terms for describing yarns, threads, or fabrics, end up working their way into our vocabulary as metaphors of various kinds. I have heard or read of people saying they were frazzled, and they did not mean they were untidy, but that they felt like they were coming apart emotionally. So the meaning has changed since Mary Brooks Picken wrote this definition in The Language of Fashion in 1939.
So the word started with fabric, was applied to general appearance and has worked its way into describing one’s emotional state. The one element that survived is the reference to something or someone who is not doing all that well. If you have ever made a garment, loved wearing it, only to have the fabric itself finally give out on you, you know the feeling.

This is something that we have questioned for a few years now and just as spirit works this post crossed our path this morning as a reminder to further explore this issue. The similarities between the Orisha Eshu/Esu of the Yoruba Ifa tradition of Nigeria and the concept of Yeshua/Jesus are quite interesting and it goes further than just the spelling. For example, in Ifa cosmology, Eshu is seen as the crossroads between the physical and spiritual realms of existence. Homage is also paid to Eshu first before working with the other Orishas as he is viewed as the divine messenger. This concept is echoed in the biblical quote "No one comes to the Father except through me." As mentioned previously Eshu is associated with the CROSSroads, what symbol is associated with Yeshua/Jesus? Definitely food for thought! Have you ever noticed these correlations before? Do you have any others to add? Please share your general thoughts? #AmbroseBurnside was a Union General in the #CivilWar, a Senator- and later Governor of #RhodeIsland. His most enduring legacy today though may be his distinctive facial hair- the rearrangement of his last name “Burnside” becomes the origin of the term “side burns” #historymemes #wordorigins #newenglandhistory (at Swan Point Cemetery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc5e6jcu-sE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

03/06/2022 #FeastOfMars #StMartian Reposted from @tess4444 The god Mars, from whom March gets its name, is best known as the Roman god of war. But even before his warlike associations, he has been revered as a primordial deity of protection, boundaries, healing, & fertility. March 1st is his feast day & is considered to be the day of his birth. ✨. . . And now for something completely different: I have a friend who isn’t just a little Greek, but a lot Greek, and her favorite kick-in-the-butt reminder to herself is “be brave”. So I thought: “I’ll do something nice for her birthday, make her a little ‘Be brave’ piece. That’d be cutesy and fun, right? Add a bird or two? Ooo, I could look up the origins of the word!” And then I saw that it was potentially tied to the Latin barbarus and began to cackle madly, because my repressed Ancient Greek knew damn well where it was all headed. Side note: I think the little junco bird looks better in that helmet than Leonidas did. #amelialeonardsart #art #artist #artwork #fantasyartist #bird #birds #robinbird #juncobird #ancientgreek #bebrave #robin #songbird #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorstudy #watercolorartist #watercolorpainting #painting #wordorigins #instaart #instaartist (at Rockport, Massachusetts)
