Hello! So I had this Poly!Volturi Knights x Reader idea
Where (y/n) went to a “Red and Black ball”(you can pick the readers outfit if you want) made by the Volturi kings themselves.
And during their time at the ball they made eye contact with each of the knights as they walked pass by them
Almost like a slow motion moment Yknow😅
This is so cool I can definitely do this and I’ll even have it as each of their povs further down in this
↱ queen of the ball ↰
➘ summary : the volturi goes all out for their newest member, it’s a good thing they are hosting a ball tonight
➘ a/n : I don’t feel I did my best for this but I hope you enjoy it nevertheless :)
➘ Jane x Alec x reader x demetri x felix , volturi x reader

The grand halls of the Volturi castle were adorned with opulent decorations, a tapestry of black and red intertwining to create an ambiance of both elegance and power. The anticipation was palpable as guests from all corners of the vampire world gathered for the much-awaited black and red ball, hosted by the Volturi kings themselves.
In a secluded chamber within the castle, the newest member of the Volturi, (Y/N), stood before a full-length mirror. She was surrounded by a whirlwind of activity as skilled hands worked to transform her appearance. The dress that had been meticulously designed for her lay across a chair, a masterpiece of black silk with intricate red accents that mimicked the patterns of rose petals.
Marcus, known for his impeccable taste and eye for design, had overseen every detail of the dress's creation. He had chosen to infuse it with an air of enchantment, a nod to the fairy tales that humans so often told. The dress clung to her figure in all the right places, the red accents tracing delicate lines that emphasized her natural beauty.
Aro, with his flair for the dramatic, had arranged for a hairstylist and makeup artist to enhance (Y/N)'s features. Her (h/c) hair was woven into an intricate updo, adorned with delicate red crystals that caught the light and shimmered like stars. The makeup artist had worked magic with brushes and pigments, enhancing her eyes and lips in a way that accentuated her allure without overpowering her natural radiance.
As the finishing touches were applied, (Y/N)'s reflection stared back at her with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. This was a night of celebration, a chance for her to make her mark within the Volturi and to showcase her newfound place as a member of their family. She had been embraced by the kings, and tonight, she would step into her role with grace and poise.
With a final flourish, her reflection smiled back at her, and the transformation was complete. She turned to face the attendants, gratitude filling her eyes. "Thank you all. I never imagined I would be part of such an extraordinary event."
Caius, whose taste leaned towards luxury and indulgence, entered the room, holding a pair of red and black heels with a glass-like sheen. "To complete the ensemble," he declared, a rare hint of a smile tugging at his lips. The shoes were a work of art, a perfect match to the dress that had been crafted with such care.
Finally ready, (Y/N) took one last look in the mirror before stepping out into the bustling hallway. The whispers of admiration that followed her as she walked towards the ballroom were a testament to the effort that had been put into her transformation. The dress swirled around her with each step, the red accents catching the light and creating an ethereal glow.
As she entered the ballroom, the atmosphere shifted. All eyes turned towards her, the sea of black and red parting to make way for her presence. The Volturi kings stood at the center, their gazes filled with approval and a touch of awe. Aro's grin was infectious, and Caius's nod of approval held more weight than she could have hoped for.
Marcus approached her, his calm demeanor softened by a smile. "You look stunning, my dear. Your mates will surely love seeing you in this."
With each note of the music that filled the air, (Y/N) felt the weight of her new role lifting. She was not just a member of the Volturi; she was a part of a family that celebrated her, appreciated her, and had dressed her in a gown fit for a modern Cinderella.
Demetri's eyes were fixed on the entrance to the grand ballroom, his heart pounding with an excitement he couldn't contain. He had heard the whispers and the anticipatory hum that had swept through the castle, signaling the arrival of someone special. And then, like a vision materializing from his most fervent dreams, she appeared.
(Y/N) walked into the room, her presence captivating everyone in its wake. His breath caught in his throat as his gaze traveled down her figure, taking in the sight of the black Cinderella-like dress with its delicate red accents. The dress hugged her curves with a grace that left him momentarily speechless.
The red accents seemed to dance like flames against the darkness of the dress, creating an enchanting contrast that mirrored her captivating aura. Her (h/c) hair was elegantly styled, adorned with crimson crystals that caught the light and shimmered like stars in the night sky. The makeup that enhanced her features was a masterpiece, drawing his attention to her mesmerizing eyes and the curve of her lips.
Every step she took seemed to be guided by an otherworldly elegance, as if the very air around her recognized her significance. Demetri's heart swelled with pride as he watched her, a fierce possessiveness welling up within him. She was his mate, a beacon of beauty that had captured his heart and soul from the moment they had met.
Her eyes scanned the room, a mixture of curiosity and wonder reflecting in their depths. It was as if she was seeing the grandeur of the ballroom for the first time, and in a way, he realized, she was. This was her introduction to the world of the Volturi, and he was both honored and anxious to be a part of this pivotal moment in her life.
Demetri's thoughts raced as he continued to watch her. The way she moved, the way she interacted with the other guests—everything about her was a testament to her innate grace and charm. He knew that this was a night she would remember, a night that would etch itself into her memory just as indelibly as it would in his.
As the music swelled and couples began to dance, Demetri found himself unable to tear his gaze away from her. She was the center of attention, the embodiment of the beauty and elegance that the night represented. And in that moment, he knew that he was the luckiest man alive to have her as his mate, to witness her in all her glory as she graced the ballroom with her presence.
Jane's crimson eyes were fixed on the entrance to the ballroom, her usually impassive expression betraying a flicker of anticipation. She had heard the whispers and felt the subtle shift in the atmosphere, signaling the arrival of someone who held a special place in her heart. And then, as if stepping out of a fairy tale, (Y/N) walked into the room.
A rare warmth spread through Jane's chest as she took in the sight before her. The black Cinderella-like dress with its intricate red accents was a striking choice that perfectly complemented (Y/N)'s allure. Jane's lips curved into a small, genuine smile as she recognized the dress as a creation from Marcus's impeccable taste. It seemed that even the reserved Volturi kings could not resist the allure of such an enchanting design.
(Y/N) moved with a grace that demanded attention, her every step exuding confidence and elegance. Jane's gaze lingered on the red accents, noting how they seemed to capture the light and create a luminous effect against the dark fabric. Her (h/c) hair was styled in a way that emphasized her beauty without overpowering it, and the makeup highlighted her delicate features.
The transformation was remarkable, turning (Y/N) into a vision that was hard to ignore. Jane's heart swelled with a mixture of emotions, a potent blend of pride and possessiveness. This was her mate, someone who had captured her heart and whose presence held an undeniable significance in her life.
As (Y/N)'s gaze swept across the room, Jane couldn't help but admire the way her eyes sparkled with curiosity and wonder. She was taking in the grandeur of the ballroom, a place that was undoubtedly foreign to her. Jane felt a desire to protect (Y/N) from the attention and scrutiny that came with being a part of the Volturi, even as she recognized (Y/N)'s inner strength.
The music resonated through the air, couples twirling and dancing to its rhythm. Jane's attention, however, remained solely on (Y/N). She watched as (Y/N) interacted with the other guests, her genuine smile and the ease with which she carried herself drawing people to her like moths to a flame.
In that moment, Jane was overcome with a sense of gratitude. She knew that finding a mate was a rare and precious gift, and having (Y/N) by her side was a privilege she cherished. As the night unfolded, Jane knew that this would be a memory she would hold onto—a memory of the night she watched her mate, resplendent in a black dress with red accents, make her mark in the world of vampires and within the depths of Jane's own heart.
Alec's gaze was unwavering as he stood at the edge of the ballroom, his typically calm demeanor masking the rush of emotions that surged within him. The anticipation in the air was almost palpable, the collective excitement of the guests adding to the electric atmosphere. And then, like a beacon of elegance and beauty, (Y/N) walked into the room.
His breath caught in his throat as his eyes locked onto her figure. The black Cinderella-like dress adorned with delicate red accents clung to her form in a way that seemed almost poetic. Alec's lips curved into a rare, genuine smile as he recognized the elegance of the dress as a creation of Marcus's meticulous design.
(Y/N)'s every movement was a symphony of grace, her steps measured yet exuding a confidence that drew all eyes toward her. Alec's gaze lingered on the red accents that seemed to come alive under the light, casting a mesmerizing glow against the backdrop of the night. Her (h/c) hair, styled with a touch of understated glamour, framed her face in a way that enhanced her natural beauty.
Alec's heart swelled with a mixture of emotions as he watched her. There was a sense of pride that she was his mate, a feeling of possessiveness that he had never experienced before. Her transformation was remarkable, turning her into a vision that was both captivating and enchanting.
(Y/N) turned her head slightly, her eyes scanning the room with a mix of curiosity and wonder. Alec's heart skipped a beat as he imagined what thoughts might be passing through her mind. She was stepping into a world vastly different from her own, and he couldn't help but feel an urge to shield her from the complexities that came with their world.
The music filled the air, couples swaying to its rhythm, but Alec's focus remained solely on (Y/N). He watched as she interacted with others, her genuine smile and engaging presence drawing people to her effortlessly. He admired her strength and warmth, traits that had won him over from the moment they had met.
As the night unfolded, Alec knew that this moment would remain etched in his memory. Watching (Y/N) navigate the intricacies of their world, dressed in the black and red ensemble that mirrored her grace and beauty, was a memory he would treasure forever. She was not only a part of his world but a part of his very soul, and he couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude that fate had brought them together.
Felix's dark eyes remained fixed on the entrance to the ballroom, his usually composed demeanor betraying a subtle restlessness. He had heard the murmurs and sensed the excitement that hung in the air like static, announcing the arrival of a special guest. And then, as if emerging from the depths of his most cherished dreams, (Y/N) stepped into view.
A slow, appreciative smile tugged at the corners of his lips as his gaze traveled over her. The black Cinderella-like dress with its intricate red accents was a masterpiece that held his attention captive. Felix's usually stoic expression softened as he took in every detail—the way the dress clung to her figure, the red accents that seemed to shimmer like embers against the darkness.
(Y/N) moved with a regal grace, each step exuding a confidence that drew the eyes of everyone in the room. Felix's heart swelled with a mixture of pride and possessiveness as he watched her. This was his mate, the person who had captured his heart in a way that he had never thought possible. Her transformation was nothing short of breathtaking, a testament to the care and attention that had been poured into her appearance.
The (h/c) hair that framed her face was styled in a way that highlighted her features, enhancing her natural beauty without overpowering it. Felix's eyes lingered on the delicate details—the crimson crystals that adorned her hair, the makeup that accentuated her eyes and lips in a way that left him entranced.
As (Y/N)'s gaze swept across the room, Felix's heart skipped a beat. He admired the way she carried herself, the ease with which she engaged with the other guests. There was an air of curiosity and wonder in her eyes, as if she was seeing this world through a new lens. And in a way, she was. This was her introduction to the Volturi's grandeur, and Felix was both humbled and anxious to be a part of this pivotal moment in her life.
The music filled the air, couples swaying in time to its melody, but Felix's attention remained solely on (Y/N). He watched as she interacted with others, her presence commanding attention, her genuine smile captivating those around her.
With each passing moment, Felix felt an overwhelming surge of gratitude. This was the mate he had longed for, the one who completed him in ways he hadn't thought possible. As the night unfolded, he couldn't help but marvel at the image of (Y/N) dressed in the black and red ensemble, a representation of her beauty and the depth of their connection. This was a memory he would hold close, a moment in time that encapsulated the beginning of a new chapter in both their lives.
A sense of unity seemed to permeate the air as Alec, Jane, Felix, and Demetri exchanged glances, a silent understanding passing between them. Their posts were important, but this was a moment they couldn't let slip by unnoticed. As if guided by an unspoken agreement, they discreetly left their respective places and converged in a more secluded corner of the ballroom.
Alec's gaze held a soft intensity as he spoke first, his voice low and filled with genuine admiration. "You look breathtaking, (Y/N). The dress, the way you carry yourself—it's truly enchanting."
Jane's crimson eyes held a warmth that was rare for her, her lips curving into a genuine smile. "I must admit, I'm not one for compliments, but tonight you've managed to capture everyone's attention, including mine. You are a vision."
Felix's usually boisterous demeanor was replaced with a subdued reverence. "You've managed to stun even me, and that's saying something. The dress, the way you've carried yourself—it's as if you were made for this moment."
Demetri, who often wore a laid-back smile, looked at (Y/N) with a blend of fondness and pride. "You've brought a different kind of light to this event. It's like you've breathed life into the room, and I have to say, you've made quite the impression."
As (Y/N) listened to their words, her heart swelled with a mixture of happiness and gratitude. To have the attention and affection of these four individuals, each of whom was so integral to the Volturi, was a feeling that she couldn't put into words.
"Thank you," she replied, her voice filled with sincerity. "Your words mean more to me than you'll ever know."
Alec's lips curved into a small smile as he exchanged a look with the others. "We're not ones for public displays of emotion, but tonight is different. Tonight, we want you to know just how much you've enriched our lives."
Jane's gaze held a softness that spoke volumes, and Felix nodded in agreement. Demetri, always one for straightforwardness, offered a warm grin. "You're an exceptional addition to our family, and you've made this night unforgettable."
As they stood together, the Volturi guards and their mate shared a moment that transcended words—a connection forged by shared admiration and affection. And as the music played on, they returned to their respective posts, knowing that this night would forever remain etched in their memories as a testament to their unity and the strength of their bonds.

What if the villagers of Pelican Town know... everything?
When the Farmer arrives in town for the first time, and they begin to discover the secrets of the valley, what if the townspeople knew of it all?
They give vague omissions that they know a little of what goes on around them; The mines are to be avoided, the wizard deals with creatures outside of this world, something lives in our sewers, and so on and so forth.
But what if this isn't just them speculating, but specifically telling the farmer that they know. They know of the things that go bump in the night. They know why wails of terror and agony can be heard from the caves.
But as much as they want to be rid of the nightmares, they cannot move against them. They are cursed to know that they are surrounded by eldritch creatures that want them dead. And they can't do anything about it. They are stuck in a loop of nightmares and horror, cursed to never grow old, to never leave, to never change. They don't know how long they had been stuck there, it could be a year, it could have been a thousand, and it was all meaningless.
But then the Farmer arrives, wide-eyed and hopeful, ready to work.
Lewis is the first to notice that the Farmer is diffferent. When he gave them the tour of the old community centre, he pretended not to see the junimos, as he wouldn't want to scare them. He was quite surprised to see that the Farmer had noticed them too. Lewis dared not to hope, not yet. He simply waited. And then the Farmer donated the first bundle to the Junimos.
Somehow, the Farmer could do what they could not. They had the power to fight the terrors, to change.
Carefully, so as not to alert the Farmer to their doing, the townspeople slowly started guiding the farmer towards the magic. They hinted at secrets the Farmer would never be able to find. They made it just that little bit easier for the Farmer to make the world a better place. The progress was slow at first, but it started to build, faster and faster. The mines began to clear of monsters, and even the dreaded skull caverns began to empty. They were even able to bring a young child from the nearby islands back to their town, to give him a future.
For the first time in forever, the townspeople felt themselves free of the nightmares. Somehow, the farmer was able to break the loop. George and Evelyn quietly awaited the day they would return to yoba, and they knew it would come soon for they felt it in their soul. Everyone felt it. They were aging once more.
For a long time, life was beautiful. There were festivals, banquets, times of celebration and times of mourning. At one point, there was a wedding held in the town square. The Farmer was madly in love, and who could deny them their happiness? Production increased, and taxes were lowered. There was enough money for everyone to live comfortably and happily. But the Farmer wasn't done.
It took many years, but the work was finally complete. The farm was now a masterpiece of engineering, automated down to the feeding of the animals. And at the centre, standing as the highlight of the Farmer's accomplishments was a mighty golden clock. It was a grand thing, as if it were taken straight out of a fairy tale. They didn't know how it worked, but it seemed to have a stange effect upon them all. The townspeople didn't know how the Farmer had ended up in Stardew Valley, but they were thankful. They were thankful that they could break the curse that consumed them all.
It was many years later, and Penny was tutoring Vincent and Jas, when a strange thought fazed through her mind. She looked curiously down at the two children, who were happily reading away, and a faint sense of dread tugged at her. Dread she hadn't felt in a long time, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Later, she decided to take a walk to clear her head, try and figure out what was wrong.
By chance, she stumbled across the Farmer, who was fishing off the bridge by the beach. The Farmer looked at her, and smiled and waved, as they had a thousand times. But this time, she felt a jolt of fear pass through her body. It was still the Farmer, but... different. There was an evil presence inside of them, growing and festering like a tumor.
Shouldn't the children have grown up by now? Evelyn was well past a hundred years old. There was not a single wrinkle upon her; she was as youthful as the day she was trapped.
It was a slow realisation for everyone at first, but in time, they knew.
The Farmer was not the saviour they had hoped for. They were just another nightmare, and they were still stuck in the loop, forever cursed to play out the same actions forever.

Under the wide sky
Tumblr media
pairing: Jisung x reader
warnings: fluff
author's note: HAPPY BIRTHDAY JISUNG! I hope you will have a great day filled with joy <3<3<3<3<3<3<3
Imagine coming home after work and opening the front door of your shaired apartment with Jisung, your husband of one year. The house was dark and curious, where your husband is at the moment, you search the house. Finding a letter, taped onto the mirror in your bedroom, your name with his smooth handwriting on it. Gently, you placed your work bag beside the bed, opening the small letter.
Just like the romantic he were, it was a love letter, full of adoration and compliments. A poem meant for you and only for you.
Beneath the stars, where quiet whispers hum, A table waits, just for us to come. Candlelight flickers, soft and warm, Our rooftop haven, where love takes form.
The world below may rush and spin, But here, it's just us, let the night begin. I've set the scene, a perfect view, But all that's missing, my love, is you.
The city lights, like fireflies, glow, As the evening breeze begins to flow. So take my hand, come with me, To a dinner beneath the endless sea.
We'll share a meal, but more than that, We'll share our hearts, where love is at. Join me tonight, under the sky so wide, In our rooftop haven, where love can’t hide.
Just you and me, in the quiet of night, Together, forever, in the soft moonlight. So what do you say, my dearest, my life? Will you join me for dinner, my beautiful wife?
You chuckled at the poem and wondered how much time it has consumed to write such a masterpiece but your Jisung was a song writer after all and you preened with happiness to get such a wonderful letter. With a smile you hopped quickly into the shower, washing the dirt of the day off and then running back to your bedroom since you don't want Ji to wait too long. Who knows how long he is already up there?
You were just starting to rummage through your closet for something decent to wear when you noticed the beautiful black dress laid out on the bed with another small letter.
On our bed, a dress of midnight hue, Laid gently for my love, so true. A whisper of elegance, soft and fine, For tonight, my darling, you’ll truly shine.
Under the stars, where dreams take flight, We’ll dine together in the soft moonlight. A table set with love and care, Waiting for the moment we’ll share.
Slip into that dress, so sleek and bold, Let the night wrap you in its fold. For tonight, it’s just us two, In our rooftop world, beneath skies so blue.
So come, my love, when you’re ready, With steps so light, so sure, so steady. I’ll be waiting where the stars align, For a perfect evening, knowing you're mine.
Yours always, Jisung
You cooed at how cute that was. You knew that your husband loved to be romantic but this was too much for your heart to bear. you will surely die at how romantic he was. Gently, you slipped into the dress, observing your form in the mirror. It was gorgeous and absolutely breathtaking. You wondered where Jisung bought it because it was a masterpiece. It fit you perfectly, complementing every single curve of your body and then, down the waist, the skirt widely hugged your legs. And just then you noticed that it sparkled in the low bedroom light with every turn you did.
It was off the shoulder and showed off your cleavage with an amazing grace. Your back was exposed, just like Jisung loved it. It was like it rose up from a fairy tale, made by the fairy godmother herself.
Quickly, you brushed your hair and let it fall down your back in soft waves. In several minutes, you had covered your tired eyes with concealer and some mascara. Then, you stepped up the stairs to get to the rooftop. It was the main reason why you had bought this house after all. Both of you loved the stars and often observed the dark night sky whenever your schedules allowed.
The small door to your rooftop was already open, soft dimmed light of fairylights led your way. He must have hung them up alone and you could scold your husband for doing such things alone where he could fall of the ladder without anyone noticing. But you loved the gesture.
The cool night air was filled with the rhythm of slow music, something you never heard before and you could bet it was composed by Ji himself. When the lyrics danced through the dark, you knew you were right, it was indeed his angelic voice, low and soft, voicing sweet nothings.
"Hello my love" he greeted you and you finally stood eye to eye with your love of your life. His dark hair was perfectly styled and you absolutely adored the way his black suit hugged his body, a dark blue tie around his neck.
A huge boquet of flowers were in his hands, a variation, but mostly peonies, your favourite flower. "Hello, baby" you answered, a bright smile on your lips and you closed the distance between you. You pressed a soft kiss on his lips as he placed the boquet in your hands.
"You look beautiful. Not even the stars shine so bright" he flirted and you couldn't hold your laugh in. How much you loved his romantic demeanor. "You are a charmer, Han Jisung"
"I'm not a charmer. I'm just so in love with my wife" he whispered, pressing another kiss on your plush lips.
"I love you too" you grinned and took his hand in yours. "Come, dinner's ready" he lead you to the table, a white tablecloth spread out on it. You placed the flowers in the pot on the middle of the table. Jisung pulled the chair back and you sat down before he softly pushed it to the table. Then, he jogged around it to get to his own place.
The food was already in front of you, a plate full of spaghetti. It might be funny but it was your favourite meal even if it is simple. The smell let your mouth water.
"I made it myself" he told you proudly and you couldn't stop looking at him in awe. Usually, you were the one to cook due to his busy schedule and he most likely sets the kitchen on fire. Luckily, your house wasn't burning so you assumed that everything went fine. You hummed in delight when you munched on the food, talking about this and that with him.
After eating, you watched the stars, listening to his music until the next song came up, one that you knew all too well.
"Our wedding song! Come, baby, we need to dance!" You exclaimed excited and shot up from your place, dragging Ji with you. He laughed, following you either way. You gently placed a hand on his shoulder, the other one stayed in his hand. Slowly, his other sneaked around your waist, pressing you against his warm chest.
All you could do was staring up with sparkling eyes at the man who treated you like a treasure, not his princess but his queen. And you loved him so much. He was the one with whom you want to spend the eternity with. He catched the stars from the dark, wide night sky and gifted them to you like it was nothing.

My first Post
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There once was a woman whose body was cursed. If she dare bear a child, it will die before its birth. Through madness he crept, the monster of dark, he promised a child to ease the woman's heart. A daughter at last, she wept with joy, not knowing at once, she was just his toy.

This was my first post on the first blog. An early stage traditional art drawing of Lazari Lucias Hollow.
Well... back then she was still just regular ol Lazari to me. I had a back and forwarth with a friend as to how a modern Lazari should look, taking inspiration from the wonderful Ruby Gloom
Tumblr media
which is something im glad other artists like @spiderprincess-suffet
managed to also implement into her own Lazaris (For the love of Zalgo go check out her art they're masterpieces) and also taking some light inspiration from halloween and goth pop aesthetics. Something I figured would mesh well with the world of creepypasta
Tumblr media
I also wanted to implement a pinch of Alice in wonderland in there, so later we decided to give her a Bowtie and fancy looking shoes for a little girl. In a way she is wandering into a very off putting wonderland.
This story will be a Creepypasta Fairy tale after all.
And yeah! This is something I kinda wanna do for when I move the old posts over, adding a creators commentary esque thing for the designs. That way I can offer something new while I flood the tags with reposts of mine and @viledictorian old art.
Stay tuned for more!

A Wise Pair of Fools: A Retelling of “The Farmer’s Clever Daughter”
For the Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge at @inklings-challenge.
Faith
I wish you could have known my husband when he was a young man. How you would have laughed at him! He was so wonderfully pompous—oh, you’d have no idea unless you’d seen him then. He’s weathered beautifully, but back then, his beauty was bright and new, all bronze and ebony. He tried to pretend he didn’t care for personal appearances, but you could tell he felt his beauty. How could a man not be proud when he looked like one of creation’s freshly polished masterpieces every time he stepped out among his dirty, sweaty peasantry?
But his pride in his face was nothing compared to the pride he felt over his mind. He was clever, even then, and he knew it. He’d grown up with an army of nursemaids to exclaim, “What a clever boy!” over every mildly witty observation he made. He’d been tutored by some of the greatest scholars on the continent, attended the great universities, traveled further than most people think the world extends. He could converse like a native in fifteen living languages and at least three dead ones.
And books! Never a man like him for reading! His library was nothing to what it is now, of course, but he was making a heroic start. Always a book in his hand, written by some dusty old man who never said in plain language what he could dress up in words that brought four times the work to some lucky printer. Every second breath he took came out as a quotation. It fairly baffled his poor servants—I’m certain to this day some of them assume Plato and Socrates were college friends of his.
Well, at any rate, take a man like that—beautiful and over-educated—and make him king over an entire nation—however small—before he turns twenty-five, and you’ve united all earthly blessings into one impossibly arrogant being.
Unfortunately, Alistair’s pomposity didn’t keep him properly aloof in his palace. He’d picked up an idea from one of his old books that he should be like one of the judge-kings of old, walking out among his people to pass judgment on their problems, giving the inferior masses the benefit of all his twenty-four years of wisdom. It’s all right to have a royal patron, but he was so patronizing. Just as if we were all children and he was our benevolent father. It wasn’t strange to see him walking through the markets or looking over the fields—he always managed to look like he floated a step or two above the common ground the rest of us walked on—and we heard stories upon stories of his judgments. He was decisive, opinionated. Always thought he had a better way of doing things. Was always thinking two and ten and twelve steps ahead until a poor man’s head would be spinning from all the ways the king found to see through him. Half the time, I wasn’t sure whether to fear the man or laugh at him. I usually laughed.
So then you can see how the story of the mortar—what do you mean you’ve never heard it? You could hear it ten times a night in any tavern in the country. I tell it myself at least once a week! Everyone in the palace is sick to death of it!
Oh, this is going to be a treat! Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve had a fresh audience?
It happened like this. It was spring of the year I turned twenty-one. Father plowed up a field that had lain fallow for some years, with some new-fangled deep-cutting plow that our book-learned king had inflicted upon a peasantry that was baffled by his scientific talk. Father was plowing near a river when he uncovered a mortar made of solid gold. You know, a mortar—the thing with the pestle, for grinding things up. Don’t ask me why on earth a goldsmith would make such a thing—the world’s full of men with too much money and not enough sense, and housefuls of servants willing to take too-valuable trinkets off their hands. Someone decades ago had swiped this one and apparently found my father’s farm so good a hiding place that they forgot to come back for it.
Anyhow, my father, like the good tenant he was, understood that as he’d found a treasure on the king’s land, the right thing to do was to give it to the king. He was all aglow with his noble purpose, ready to rush to the palace at first light to do his duty by his liege lord.
I hope you can see the flaw in his plan. A man like Alistair, certain of his own cleverness, careful never to be outwitted by his peasantry? Come to a man like that with a solid gold mortar, and his first question’s going to be…?
That’s right. “Where’s the pestle?”
I tried to tell Father as much, but he—dear, sweet, innocent man—saw only his simple duty and went forth to fulfill it. He trotted into the king’s throne room—it was his public day—all smiles and eagerness.
Alistair took one look at him and saw a peasant tickled to death that he was pulling a fast one on the king—giving up half the king’s rightful treasure in the hopes of keeping the other half and getting a fat reward besides.
Alistair tore into my father—his tongue was much sharper then—taking his argument to pieces until Father half-believed he had hidden away the pestle somewhere, probably after stealing both pieces himself. In his confusion, Father looked even guiltier, and Alistair ordered his guard to drag Father off to the dungeons until they could arrange a proper hearing—and, inevitably, a hanging.
As they dragged him to his doom, my father had the good sense to say one coherent phrase, loud enough for the entire palace to hear. “If only I had listened to my daughter!”
Alistair, for all his brains, hadn’t expected him to say something like that. He had Father brought before him, and questioned him until he learned the whole story of how I’d urged Father to bury the mortar again and not say a word about it, so as to prevent this very scene from occurring.
About five minutes after that, I knocked over a butter churn when four soldiers burst into my father’s farmhouse and demanded I go with them to the castle. I made them clean up the mess, then put on my best dress and did up my hair—in those days, it was thick and golden, and fell to my ankles when unbound—and after traveling to the castle, I went, trembling, up the aisle of the throne room.
Alistair had made an effort that morning to look extra handsome and extra kingly. He still has robes like those, all purple and gold, but the way they set off his black hair and sharp cheekbones that day—I’ve never seen anything like it. He looked half-divine, the spirit of judgment in human form. At the moment, I didn’t feel like laughing at him.
Looming on his throne, he asked me, “Is it true that you advised this man to hide the king’s rightful property from him?” (Alistair hates it when I imitate his voice—but isn’t it a good impression?)
I said yes, it was true, and Alistair asked me why I’d done such a thing, and I said I had known this disaster would result, and he asked how I knew, and I said (and I think it’s quite good), that this is what happens when you have a king who’s too clever to be anything but stupid.
Naturally, Alistair didn’t like that answer a bit, but I’d gotten on a roll, and it was my turn to give him a good tongue-lashing. What kind of king did he think he was, who could look at a man as sweet and honest as my father and suspect him of a crime? Alistair was so busy trying to see hidden lies that he couldn’t see the truth in front of his face. So determined not to be made a fool of that he was making himself into one. If he persisted in suspecting everyone who tried to do him a good turn, no one would be willing to do much of anything for him. And so on and so forth.
You might be surprised at my boldness, but I had come into that room not expecting to leave it without a rope around my neck, so I intended to speak my mind while I had the chance. The strangest thing was that Alistair listened, and as he listened, he lost some of that righteous arrogance until he looked almost human. And the end of it all was that he apologized to me!
Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather at that! I didn’t faint, but I came darn close. That arrogant, determined young king, admitting to a simple farmer’s daughter that he’d been wrong?
He did more than admit it—he made amends. He let Father keep the mortar, and then bought it from him at its full value. Then he gifted Father the farm where we lived, making us outright landowners. After the close of the day’s hearings, he even invited us to supper with him, and I found that King Alistair wasn’t a half-bad conversational partner. Some of those books he read sounded almost interesting.
For a year after that, Alistair kept finding excuses to come by the farm. He would check on Father’s progress and baffle him with advice. We ran into each other in the street so often that I began to expect it wasn’t mere chance. We’d talk books, and farming, and sharpen our wits on each other. We’d do wordplay, puzzles, tongue-twisters. A game, but somehow, I always thought, some strange sort of test.
Would you believe, even his proposal was a riddle? Yes, an actual riddle! One spring morning, I came across Alistair on a corner of my father's land, and he got down on one knee, confessed his love for me, and set me a riddle. He had the audacity to look into the face of the woman he loved—me!—and tell me that if I wanted to accept his proposal, I would come to him at his palace, not walking and not riding, not naked and not dressed, not on the road and not off it.
Do you know, I think he actually intended to stump me with it? For all his claim to love me, he looked forward to baffling me! He looked so sure of himself—as if all his book-learning couldn’t be beat by just a bit of common sense.
If I’d really been smart, I suppose I’d have run in the other direction, but, oh, I wanted to beat him so badly. I spent about half a minute solving the riddle and then went off to make my preparations.
The next morning, I came to the castle just like he asked. Neither walking nor riding—I tied myself to the old farm mule and let him half-drag me. Neither on the road nor off it—only one foot dragging in a wheel rut at the end. Neither naked nor dressed—merely wrapped in a fishing net. Oh, don’t look so shocked! There was so much rope around me that you could see less skin than I’m showing now.
If I’d hoped to disappoint Alistair, well, I was disappointed. He radiated joy. I’d never seen him truly smile before that moment—it was incandescent delight. He swept me in his arms, gave me a kiss without a hint of calculation in it, then had me taken off to be properly dressed, and we were married within a week.
It was a wonderful marriage. We got along beautifully—at least until the next time I outwitted him. But I won’t bore you with that story again—
You don’t know that one either? Where have you been hiding yourself?
Oh, I couldn’t possibly tell you that one. Not if it’s your first time. It’s much better the way Alistair tells it.
What time is it?
Perfect! He’s in his library just now. Go there and ask him to tell you the whole thing.
Yes, right now! What are you waiting for?
Alistair
Faith told you all that, did she? And sent you to me for the rest? That woman! It’s just like her! She thinks I have nothing better to do than sit around all day and gossip about our courtship!
Where are you going? I never said I wouldn’t tell the story! Honestly, does no one have brains these days? Sit down!
Yes, yes, anywhere you like. One chair’s as good as another—I built this room for comfort. Do you take tea? I can ring for a tray—the story tends to run long.
Well, I’ll ring for the usual, and you can help yourself to whatever you like.
I’m sure Faith has given you a colorful picture of what I was like as a young man, and she’s not totally inaccurate. I’d had wealth and power and too much education thrown on me far too young, and I thought my blessings made me better than other men. My own father had been the type of man who could be fooled by every silver-tongued charlatan in the land, so I was sensitive and suspicious, determined to never let another man outwit me.
When Faith came to her father’s defense, it was like my entire self came crumbling down. Suddenly, I wasn’t the wise king; I was a cruel and foolish boy—but Faith made me want to be better. That day was the start of my fascination with her, and my courtship started in earnest not long after.
The riddle? Yes, I can see how that would be confusing. Faith tends to skip over the explanations there. A riddle’s an odd proposal, but I thought it was brilliant at the time, and I still think it wasn’t totally wrong-headed. I wasn’t just finding a wife, you see, but a queen. Riddles have a long history in royal courtships. I spent weeks laboring over mine. I had some idea of a symbolic proposal—each element indicating how she’d straddle two worlds to be with me. But more than that, I wanted to see if Faith could move beyond binary thinking—look beyond two opposites to see the third option between. Kings and queens have to do that more often than you’d think…
No, I’m sorry, it is a bit dull, isn’t it? I guess there’s a reason Faith skips over the explanations.
So to return to the point: no matter what Faith tells you, I always intended for her to solve the riddle. I wouldn’t have married her if she hadn’t—but I wouldn’t have asked if I’d had the least doubt she’d succeed. The moment she came up that road was the most ridiculous spectacle you’d ever hope to see, but I had never known such ecstasy. She’d solved every piece of my riddle, in just the way I’d intended. She understood my mind and gained my heart. Oh, it was glorious.
Those first weeks of marriage were glorious, too. You’d think it’d be an adjustment, turning a farmer’s daughter into a queen, but it was like Faith had been born to the role. Manners are just a set of rules, and Faith has a sharp mind for memorization, and it’s not as though we’re a large kingdom or a very formal court. She had a good mind for politics, and was always willing to listen and learn. I was immensely proud of myself for finding and catching the perfect wife.
You’re smarter than I was—you can see where I was going wrong. But back then, I didn’t see a cloud in the sky of our perfect happiness until the storm struck.
It seemed like such a small thing at the time. I was looking over the fields of some nearby villages—farming innovations were my chief interest at the time. There were so many fascinating developments in those days. I’ve an entire shelf full of texts if you’re interested—
The story, yes. My apologies. The offer still stands.
Anyway, I was out in the fields, and it was well past the midday hour. I was starving, and more than a little overheated, so we were on our way to a local inn for a bit of food and rest. Just as I was at my most irritable, these farmers’ wives show up, shrilly demanding judgment in a case of theirs. I’d become known for making those on-the-spot decisions. I’d thought it was an efficient use of government resources—as long as I was out with the people, I could save them the trouble of complicated procedures with the courts—but I’d never regretted taking up the practice as heartily as I did in this moment.
The case was like this: one farmer’s horse had recently given birth, and the foal had wandered away from its mother and onto the neighbor’s property, where it laid down underneath an ox that was at pasture, and the second farmer thought this gave him a right to keep it. There were questions of fences and boundaries and who-owed-who for different trades going back at least a couple of decades—those women were determined to bring every past grievance to light in settling this case.
Well, it didn’t take long for me to lose what little patience I had. I snapped at both women and told them that my decision was that the foal could very well stay where it was.
Not my most reasoned decision, but it wasn’t totally baseless. I had common law going back centuries that supported such a ruling. Possession is nine-tenths of the law and all. It wasn't as though a single foal was worth so much fuss. I went off to my meal and thought that was the end of it.
I’d forgotten all about it by the time I returned to the same village the next week. My man and I were crossing the bridge leading into the town when we found the road covered by a fishing net. An old man sat by the side of the road, shaking and casting the net just as if he were laying it out for a catch.
“What do you think you’re doing, obstructing a public road like this?” I asked him.
The man smiled genially at me and replied, “Fishing, majesty.”
I thought perhaps the man had a touch of sunstroke, so I was really rather kind when I explained to him how impossible it was to catch fish in the roadway.
The man just replied, “It’s no more impossible than an ox giving birth to a foal, majesty.”
He said it like he’d been coached, and it didn’t take long for me to learn that my wife was behind it all. The farmer’s wife who’d lost the foal had come to Faith for help, and my wife had advised the farmer to make the scene I’d described.
Oh, was I livid! Instead of coming to me in private to discuss her concerns about the ruling, Faith had made a public spectacle of me. She encouraged my own subjects to mock me! This was what came of making a farm girl into a queen! She’d live in my house and wear my jewels, and all the time she was laughing up her sleeve at me while she incited my citizens to insurrection! Before long, none of my subjects would respect me. I’d lose my crown, and the kingdom would fall to pieces—
I worked myself into a fine frenzy, thinking such things. At the time, I thought myself perfectly reasonable. I had identified a threat to the kingdom’s stability, and I would deal with it. The moment I came home, I found Faith and declared that the marriage was dissolved. “If you prefer to side with the farmers against your own husband,” I told her, “you can go back to your father’s house and live with them!”
It was quite the tantrum. I’m proud to say I’ve never done anything so shameful since.
To my surprise, Faith took it all silently. None of the fire that she showed in defending her father against me. Faith had this way, back then, where she could look at a man and make him feel like an utter fool. At that moment, she made me feel like a monster. I was already beginning to regret what I was doing, but it was buried under so much anger that I barely realized it, and my pride wouldn’t allow me to back down so easily from another decision.
After I said my piece, Faith quietly asked if she was to leave the palace with nothing.
I couldn’t reverse what I’d decided, but I could soften it a bit.
“You may take one keepsake,” I told her. “Take the one thing you love best from our chambers.”
I thought I was clever to make the stipulation. Knowing Faith, she’d have found some way to move the entire palace and count it as a single item. I had no doubt she’d take the most expensive and inconvenient thing she could, but there was nothing in that set of rooms I couldn’t afford to lose.
Or so I thought. No doubt you’re beginning to see that Faith always gets the upper hand in a battle of wits.
I kept my distance that evening—let myself stew in resentment so I couldn’t regret what I’d done. I kept to my library—not this one, the little one upstairs in our suite—trying to distract myself with all manner of books, and getting frustrated when I found I wanted to share pieces of them with Faith. I was downright relieved when a maid came by with a tea tray. I drank my usual three cups so quickly I barely tasted them—and I passed out atop my desk five minutes later.
Yes, Faith had arranged for the tea—and she’d drugged me!
I came to in the pink light of early dawn, my head feeling like it had been run over by a military caravan. My wits were never as slow as they were that morning. I laid stupidly for what felt like hours, wondering why my bed was so narrow and lumpy, and why the walls of the room were so rough and bare, and why those infernal birds were screaming half an inch from my open window.
By the time I had enough strength to sit up, I could see that I was in the bedroom of a farmer’s cottage. Faith was standing by the window, looking out at the sunrise, wearing the dress she’d worn the first day I met her. Her hair was unbound, tumbling in golden waves all the way to her ankles. My heart leapt at the sight—her hair was one of the wonders of the world in those days, and I was so glad to see her when I felt so ill—until I remembered the events of the previous day, and was too confused and ashamed to have room for any other thoughts or feelings.
“Faith?” I asked. “Why are you here? Where am I?”
“My father’s home,” Faith replied, her eyes downcast—I think it’s the only time in her life she was ever bashful. “You told me I could take the one thing I loved best.”
Can I explain to you how my heart leapt at those words? There had never been a mind or a heart like my wife’s! It was like the moment she’d come to save her father—she made me feel a fool and feel glad for the reminder. I’d made the same mistake both times—let my head get in the way of my heart. She never made that mistake, thank heaven, and it saved us both.
Do you have something you want to add, Faith, darling? Don’t pretend I can’t see you lurking in the stacks and laughing at me! I’ll get as sappy as I like! If you think you can do it better, come out in the open and finish this story properly!
Faith
You tell it so beautifully, my darling fool boy, but if you insist—
I was forever grateful Dinah took that tea to Alistair. I couldn’t believe he hadn’t seen the loophole in his words—I was so afraid he’d see my ploy coming and stop me. But his wits were so blessedly dull that day. It was like outwitting a child.
When at last he came to, I was terrified. He had cast me out because I’d outwitted him, and now here I was again, thinking another clever trick would make everything well.
Fortunately, Alistair was marvelous—saw my meaning in an instant. Sometimes he can be almost clever.
After that, what’s there to tell? We made up our quarrel, and then some. Alistair brought me back to the palace in high honors—it was wonderful, the way he praised me and took so much blame on himself.
(You were really rather too hard on yourself, darling—I’d done more than enough to make any man rightfully angry. Taking you to Father’s house was my chance to apologize.)
Alistair paid the farmer for the loss of his foal, paid for the mending of the fence that had led to the trouble in the first place, and straightened out the legal tangles that had the neighbors at each others’ throats.
After that, things returned much to the way they’d been before, except that Alistair was careful never to think himself into such troubles again. We’ve gotten older, and I hope wiser, and between our quarrels and our reconciliations, we’ve grown into quite the wise pair of lovestruck fools. Take heed from it, whenever you marry—it’s good to have a clever spouse, but make sure you have one who’s willing to be the fool every once in a while.
Trust me. It works out for the best.

Either way, Puss is losing a life here
Tumblr media
Vote in the other polls!
What fans say:
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish:
It has a very well done and mature depiction of serious topics (mortality) and mental health. My favourite scene is the depiction of Puss having a panic attack and Perrito comforting him. Also great animation and all the characters are amazing.
The trio of puss+kitty+ perrito was really fun and I loved Puss and Kitty’s relationship. The scenes with Death gave me chills when I saw it in theaters. The animation was gorgeous, the character arcs are very well done, every character is entertaining to watch and it's paced impressively well. Probably the best animated movie I saw in 2022
The animation, the characters, the details, the story, the comedy, the messages, the animation style, All OF IT!
I absolutely love the characterization, the fact that they managed to wrangle BLOOD into the movie was insane to me when I watched it in theaters. I was so entranced lol
It’s a fucking cinematic masterpiece. I nearly cried this film changed a part of my soul. The animation is incredibly stylised especially for the fight scenes, the locations are beautiful and the characters are all enjoyable in their own ways. The music is so good i recommended it to my music teacher on the basis of looking at it for leitmotifs. Genuinely one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
The opening scene is absolutely gorgeous + Kitty & pib's relationship is so important to me. they invented true love. <2
I've been fixated on this movie for five months now and it's not stopping; the animation is inventive and stunning, the characters are all in-depth and well-written, the antagonists are all a delight, the themes stay with you ages after you walk out of the theater, it has the most realistic depiction of a panic attack I've ever seen on the big screen in my entire life. It's all incredibly stylish, the music all goes hard, every single scene matters to the greater plotline, never is a character mocked by the narrative for their weakness or naïvete... I'm not a big movie person, but I've watched this over twenty times honestly, and it's impacted me for the rest of my life.
Shrek 2:
Shrek may be one of the biggest memes on the internet, but this movie legitimately SLAPS!!! This is the movie that most Shrek Conoisseurs agree is the best for the mostly great storyline and it's REALLY great comedy throughout. This is also the movie that introduced us to Puss in Boots! The ending is also INCREDIBLY iconic just saying. 10/10
"One of the greatest sequels of all time. Still holds up nearly 20 years later. It's got everything you could ask for. Diegetic music, a giant gingerbread man Godzilla parody, dancing, death/self-sacrifice, Puss in boots, and, most importantly, a banging song that mixes things up (Seriously, the cover slaps way harder than the original. The alternating highs and lows in terms of tempo and intensity really makes it).
Shrek is a good movie. But Shrek 2 is a great movie. It builds off of the world in the previous film, expands and make it more compelling, while still being a fairy-tale modern tale that critiques family relations. There's great jokes, like Shrek pretending to be from the union, the Fairy Godmother breaking her diet as a punishment for someone else, and a knight planting drugs on Puss in Boots. It's an absolutely iconic movie with THE BEST use of an existing song for a climax in any film (fight me) with the I Need a Hero scene, but also is able to slow down and perfectly capture the awkward first meal with disapproving parents.

do you have any book recommendations beyond classic lit + Jane Austen? Love your blog by the way!
Thanks! I read/have read a ton of books. My favourite genre as a child was fantasy, but I read almost everything except true crime*, thrillers, murder mysteries, self-help, and biography. But I do sometimes read those, my favourite thriller is Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney. I'm going to start with children's books because honestly, I find so much imagination in that genre.
Children's/YA Books: Gail Carson Levine, specifically The Princess Tales 1 & 2, and Ella Enchanted, among others Jean Little/Kit Pearson - these authors have the same vibe to me. Willow and Twig is a favourite from the first one, The Guests of War trilogy and Awake and Dreaming from the other. They both write coming of age novels for girls, both Canadian. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - I loved the whole trilogy (haven't watched the movie). The story being based around real antique trick photos is my favourite part The Echorium Sequence by Katherine Roberts - a trilogy of books about magical singers with blue hair and their interactions with half-human magical creatures Margaret Peterson Haddix, specifically Running Out of Time, the Shadow Children series, and Double Identity. Margaret Buffie, who writes stories about teenage girls and ghosts. Also Canadian, which I guess isn't that surprising. The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. Re-read it last summer and it's as good as I remembered. Roald Dahl, I really loved Matilda as a child, it's been fun to read some of these novels with my kids. Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar - and it's sequels. Amazingly quirky and funny stories about a class of students in a weird school
Fantasy: Mercedes Lackey, specifically the Five Hundred Kingdoms series and The Obsidian universe. I also loved the Elvenbane series, but due to the death of Andre Norton it may never be finished. I would advise caution if sexual assault is triggering for you, the ones I like are mostly free of it but that can come up in her other works. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - obviously. Also loved The Hobbit, have not read further The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin - the book opens with the triggering of an apocalypse. The world contains people who can control earthquakes A Baroque Fable by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro - this book is so hilarious but I don't know if anyone has heard about it Once Upon a Winter's Night by Dennis L. McKiernan - and it's sequels. This is a romance retold fairy tale series
Science Fiction: Michael Crichton - who spans a bunch of genres but I'll put him here. I've read everything he's written and I recommend most of it. State of Fear has not aged well. His books are very fast-paced and Timeline has one of the best enemies to lovers. Orson Scott Card - I am aware, but Ender's Game is a masterpiece. He also has this single novel called Magic Street that is a sequel to A Midsummer Night's Dream. I also loved Memories of Earth but it's been a while since I read it. I, Robot by Issac Asimov - short stories about artificial intelligence and how it might go weird
Graphic novels: Astro City by Kurt Busiek - superhero, but more focused on how living in that world would affect normal people Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra - every male on earth dies, except for one, and his monkey Fables by Bill Willlingham - after being attacked by an army of wooden soldiers, fairy tale characters and creatures seek refuge in a non-magical world (ours) Nimona by ND Stevenson - a villain gains a shape-shifting sidekick, but she is not what she seems Scurry by Mac Smith - post-apocalyptic earth, the main characters are all surviving mice. Best artwork I've ever seen in a graphic novel American Vampire by Scott Snyder- vampires have different traits depending on their home country, this is about the new, American species. Asterix and Obelix by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo - a small group of powerful Gauls defend themselves against the Romans using a magical potion
Non Fiction: Stephan Pinker, I've read both of his trilogies on language and the brain. Trying to get through his huge book about violence The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks - writen by a neurologist, fascinating book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick by Maya Dusenbery - what it says on the tin
Toddler/Young Child Books: The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone - I give you a 100% guarantee that if you read this book aloud, the kids will be fascinated. It is literally always a hit Robert Munsch - most of his books are amazing, but if you don't want to cry, DO NOT read the backstory of Love You Forever. The Paper Bag Princess was one of my favourites as a child. Little Critter - only the older ones, the new ones are religious for some reason. Just for You and I Was So Mad were favourites for my kids. Early lesson in unreliable narrators. Phoebe Gilman - Something From Nothing, the Jillian Jiggs series, The Balloon Tree... so many good ones! Really good illustrations too Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal - a book about a pea who hates eating candy. This book is fun to read and my kids loved it (I have the box set) The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak - kids love when adults have to do weird things I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen - perfect opportunity to do a lot of funny voices The Mitten by Jan Brett - a whole bunch of animals squeeze into a mitten. That's the whole thing. It's great. The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland - and the rest of the series. These are fun to read because they rhyme. Jonathan Stutzman - my kids LOVE Tiny T. Rex and the Llama series. We haven't read the others An Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems - we have this entire series, they are a delight. An elephant and pig are very silly friends. Good drawings Dr. Seuss - be careful with him though, his books are quite long and can be hard to read, so I recommend waiting until your kids are a bit older. But The Lorax slaps and my personal favourite as a kid was The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins
Other: Still Alice by Lisa Genova - or any of her books really. She is a neuroscientist and her books are really interesting explorations of different disorders. Book is better than the movie Warm Bodies by Issac Marion - zombie Romeo and Juliet Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder - a novel that is also an intro to philosophy course Calvin and Hobbes - I own all of them, so excited for when my kids can understand them. I also love The Far Side, Zits, and the earlier Dilbert comics The Women in Black by Madeleine St. John - this book is absolutely charming. I saw the Netflix movie and then bought it right away.
*I avoid true crime because I have heard that the genre causes harassment to victim's families
General Note: I am aware that some of these authors are now considered controversial, some for more serious reasons than others. Sometimes flawed people make really good art. I mean, flawed people make all art because nobody on earth is perfect.

Today “Dom Bohuna / Дім Богуна” celebrates its 4th anniversary
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps, it is a proper moment for some summing-up reflections. I admit that I have created this blog 15.04.2020 only for fun. It was during the COVID-pandemic times, I was closed at home, recovering from a long illness. In such circumstances, some people return to their childhood fairy-tales. So I have returned to Bohun and “Ogniem i mieczem”. I was searching on the Internet for all possible groups of H. Sienkiewicz’s “Trilogy” fans, just to make friends with them, and I have found such a group here, on Tumblr and at the same time – some breathtakingly beautiful English stories about Helena, Jurko & Jan on AO3. For me, as a non-heterosexual person, their greatest value (for which I will be eternally grateful to their Authors!) was adding to my beloved “Trilogy” universe the motif of same-sex love and relationship. I wanted to contribute to it, so I have created my own Tumblr blog and an account on AO3, where I have published some from my own stories.
To be honest, the encounter with the Western “Ogniem i mieczem” fandom, seeing, how some people there perceive “Trilogy” characters, was a VERY shocking experience for me. One of these events, that are leaving you for years with a question circulating in your mind: “WHY??? What is wrong with this content, that people react to it (and to you, its admirer) in SUCH a way?” It is obvious, that H. Sienkiewicz’ “Trilogy”, created in the 19th century and telling about the historical events in the Eastern Europe from the mid-17th century, for contemporary readers can be in many aspects at least problematic (or difficult to accept). In general, it shouldn’t be, it can’t be taken uncritically now. But on the other side, it is not something worthless. Or “dirty”. Its characters (in their majority based on the real people from the past) can commit deeds viewed now as crimes, but they are still HUMANS. What is more, H. Sienkiewicz’ “Trilogy” is part of many people’s cultural heritage, entangled with countless events, heroes, myths, motifs from the Polish history (and in its first part, “Ogniem i mieczem” – also from the Ukrainian history). It is a part of MY OWN heritage and history. And I have felt uncomfortable with a thought, that in such an international community with a world-wide scope like Tumblr, someone, not having any basic knowledge about my culture/s, can think that this heritage is a “sluttish trash”. It is a reason why my blog has become “Dom Bohuna”, “Bohun’s Home”. I believe that the best way to solve such misunderstandings is spreading Knowledge and telling the Truth, so I try to show Bohun in his “natural environment”, on the one side: within H. Sienkiewicz’s “Trilogy” universe (with diverse masterpieces from the Polish culture related to it), on the other: within the Ukrainian tradition of Cossack Heroes (with various treasures of the Ukrainian culture related to it), with the Polish Romantic Cossack myth somewhere between them. I know that for a Western eye, they are all rather “distant islands”, but many parts of them are really worthy to have a closer look.
The next turning point was the February 2022. Here, no further explanation is required, I think. It was a time, when the whole our World has changed unimaginably and abruptly. And in these new circumstances, I realized one day, that I had a blog thematically related not only to the Polish literature/culture, but above all – to the Ukrainian Cossack Hero. I am deeply grateful to all my Ukrainian and Polish Friends for encouraging me to put here more content about the real Bohun and the history of the Cossack State (Hetmanate). You have given me courage. Because I hesitated, for two reasons. First: I know that I don’t have such in-depth knowledge about the Ukrainian culture, I have about the Polish one (so I can always make some hurtful mistakes). Second: I think that my blog, created for fun/fandom reasons, is not an entirely proper place for such an important content. But after all: it is a place, where one can just talk about the Ukrainian cultural heritage and turn some people's attention to it. That is why I try, as much as my limited skills and knowledge let me, to sing here about the Ukrainian Cossacks Glory. Just as Bohun himself used to do a long time ago.

Wyll vs Astarion vs some fanon stuff
im not ragging on ppl for having fun w model swaps and whatnot. play bg3 however u want it's a masterpiece!
but i got thinkin after hearing apparently some ppl ACTUALLY believe Astarion is like a fairy tale prince and should be acting like Wyll--
Wyll is a young idealist, a LITERAL prince, believes wholeheartedly that there is good in the world - because he most certainly is a force of good! his dancing and twirling his lover and all this fancy courtship comes from, frankly, his own confidence and ideals about what kind of relationship he wants to have. you can make fun of him for being a prude or w/e and he doesn't take that shit even for a second!
Astarion is the literal opposite. He has a trash charisma score. You can argue a separation of mechanics and story, but I think it's plenty meaningful. He has learned through sheer force of practice, memorization, and terrifyingly negative reinforcement, how to tell people what they want to hear. how to guess at others' desires and fulfill them for the purposes of manipulation. His flair for the dramatic, his dandy persona (loving finery and rich things) all stem from his extreme insecurity, imo. Upon first glance, his starting outfit is a nobleman's garb, but if you read the description you realize it is very old and worn and has been repaired countless times.
Astarion's fear makes him crave power, and we often talk about that in terms of literal strength (and magic power), but I think we sometimes miss how that also includes wealth and political influence. Sure, Astarion certainly has an appreciation for fine things and a discerning eye when it comes to aesthetics, and especially clothing, but I really think much of his... pickiness? about these things is just him bullshitting for the purposes of seeming superior to others. both in terms of, being superior and lording himself over them, and also being seen as superior. because it's a performance.
We can see this manifest in spawn vs Ascendant Astarion tbh.
Spawn Astarion's epilogue outfit is specifically described to be made of "cheap leather." In most endings, he's either holed up in the Underdark with the other spawn, or a wandering folk hero. In either case, he's very genuine to himself and to others - he's a bit self-deprecating even (basically saying "yeah it's crazy that i'm actually the GOOD guy for once!"). He doesn't have to project an image of anything else, he doesn't have to perform, he simply is. So he wears something decent, but practical. And, crucially, he burned the shithole of Cazador's mansion to the ground.
Ascended Astarion... well. He shows up in a custom embroidered fit (with crimson dragons on it!!) which is absolutely gorgeous! He took over Cazador's palace and hosts masquerades and balls and invites important nobility to the estate. He is condescending to the other people at the epilogue party, including his lover if they displease him. He's still quite clearly putting on a performance.
Uhhhh so yeah this got long but! the differences between Astarion's cynical theatrics and Wyll's idealistic shows of courtship.

Uhhh so in my ongoing Jewish education I am watching Jewish media. I, a former opera/musical singer, have never seen Yentl. So tonight I watched Yentl.
What I just witnessed is one of the queerest AND one of the most technically magnificent movies I have ever seen. It was everything I want my art to be - feminist, jewish, and profoundly gay. It’s beautiful - almost fairy-tale-like. The cinematography? Like a painting. The score? Both intimate and epic. The acting? World class. The HOW DID I MISS OUT ON THIS FOR SO LONG? Why isn’t everyone just talking about this masterpiece 24/7?
Look at this autistic transmasc and their pretty girlfriend. I mean. Pls.

A youtube comment I found about Disco Elysium
One of the closest things to a modern fairy tale, a fictional world created not from the medieval or ancient, but from the world of today, it’s politics, its history, its clashing cultures, its nightmares and fever dreams. A tale not of kingdoms, gods, and romance, but of nationhood, class conflict, capitalism, and the power of identity within an alienated industrial society. A fractured mirror in which we see our innermost demons and angels, our “Furies.” A true masterpiece.

HEADCANON - dating casimiro "madrid" cenamor aranda of la casa de papel / money heist (carlos sainz jr. au)
⊹ masterlist ⊹ taglist ⊹ visuals ⊹
⊹⊱ trigger warning - [google translated spanish, allusions to smut]
⊹⊱ theme - [money heist / la casa de papel au]
⊹⊱ pairings - [carlos sainz jr. x elite!y/n]
⊹⊱ synopsis - wanting to date the heist's ladies man? beware it is a passionate adventure that takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, where you discover that there's much more beneath his enigmatic exterior.
"tus besos son versos en mi piel, y en tus abrazos encuentro mi abrigo, somos dos almas entrelazadas en la noche, en esta relación, un amor que sigo."
translation: your kisses are verses on my skin, and in your embraces, i find my shelter, we are two souls intertwined in the night, in this relationship, a love i still follow.
From the very beginning, you'd be drawn into his world of charm and charisma, an irresistible magnetism that makes every moment together feel like an enchanting escape from the ordinary and manages to sweep you off your feet. You'll find yourself in awe of his ability to turn ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.
Dates with Madrid would be nothing short of charming masterpieces. He'd meticulously plan each one, ensuring they're not just memorable but magical. Picture rooftop stargazing sessions, where you'd lose yourselves in the vastness of the night sky, sharing dreams and secrets under a blanket of stars. And be prepared for surprise getaways to picturesque destinations that seem like they've been plucked from the pages of a fairy tale. He's an adventurous man and knows every spot in Spain with the back of his hand, you would not get lost with him. But you might get lost within his eyes.
But it's not just his charm that would captivate you; it's his devilish flirtatiousness. Madrid's natural inclination to flirt would keep the spark alive in your relationship. You'd experience playful compliments that make your heart flutter, stolen kisses that leave you breathless.
NSFW! Your bodies intertwined, his lips meeting yours with a passionate hunger and claiming you as his own. His fingers explore the curves of your body, feeling each part of you with desire. Breathlessly breaking apart from the kiss, and laying his lips onto your neck with a need to feel the taste and the scent of your skin. Slowly trailing kisses down to your thighs, working his way towards his main goal.
He loves validation, as a neglected child left in an adoption home in the streets of Spain, he wasn't able to receive love from parental figures. Feed the flames of his ego, tell him that he's better than your exes, you'd have a taste of heaven ahead of you. His reaction? He is electric. His eyes darken with desire, and a predatory intensity flickers in his gaze. It's as if a heady aphrodisiac. He becomes a fervent and passionate lover, eager to prove that he is indeed the best you've ever had.
NSFW! "Mi amor, te lo dije. Y te lo demostraré." (my love, I told you. And I'll show you) He began kissing your neck once more as his fingers curled inside of you, palming your sensitive bud and making you whine from endless hours of teasing.
"Estás tan deliciosa, y yo no resisto a la tentación de comerte." (you are so delicious, and I can't resist the temptation to eat you.) He looks up grinning like a devil, his tongue licking his now slick wet fingers because of your juices before giving you a wink that is followed by a sly smirk.
Madrid's primary love language is physical touch. He expresses his affection through tender caresses, passionate kisses, and the warmth of his embrace. To him, physical closeness is the most intimate way to convey his love and devotion. He also shows his love through acts of service. He's attentive to your needs and desires, always willing to go the extra mile to make your life easier. Whether it's cooking your favorite meal, running errands for you, or fixing something that's broken, he finds joy in serving you.
Picture a lazy Sunday morning in your apartment. The soft sunlight filters through the curtains, casting a warm glow on the room. Madrid in his more tender persona, Casimiro, is up early, preparing breakfast for you. He moves gracefully in the kitchen, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. The table is set with care, your favorite breakfast dishes neatly arranged. He knows how much you appreciate these small gestures of love.
As you wake up and enter the kitchen, Madrid greets you with a warm smile, a gentle "Buen día, mi amor" escaping his lips. He pulls out a chair for you, and you can't help but notice the subtle touches of physical affection as he brushes a strand of hair from your face and plants a soft kiss on your forehead. Over breakfast, you share quiet moments of physical closeness. His hand finds your thigh under the table, his thumb tracing invisible circles on your skin, a silent but endearing connection. From refilling your coffee cup to ensuring you have everything you need for the day ahead.
One thing you'd quickly notice is his adventurous spirit. He'd crave shared adventures, seeking the thrill of new experiences with you by his side. Whether it's go-kart racing on a Sunday afternoon, spontaneous road trips that lead to hidden gems, or impromptu dance sessions in unexpected places with his two left feet, every moment with him would be an adventure waiting to happen.
His gentlemanly manners would persist, with acts of chivalry that make you feel cherished. He'd open doors, pull out chairs, and ensure your comfort in every situation.
In the world of shadows and secrets, Madrid despises the spotlight, and his love for you remains concealed from the prying eyes of the public eye. His very existence was shrouded in mystery, and he had honed the art of disappearing into the shadows. For him, the thought of being in the public's gaze was unbearable, and so your relationship had to remain concealed.
Madrid's criminal pursuits keep him far from the public eye, while you, as the daughter of a prominent politician, are entangled in the web of high-profile events and political scrutiny. The revelation of your connection to a notorious criminal would unravel your family's reputation and jeopardize your own future. He leads a double life, with one persona as a criminal and another as your passionate lover. While you would want to shout his name from the rooftops and show the world how handsome Casimiro is, public exposure could blur the lines between these personas, endangering your safety.
But beneath his enigmatic exterior lies a deeply protective almost possessive nature. Madrid's commitment to your safety and well-being would be unwavering. You'd always feel secure and cared for, knowing that he'd move mountains to keep you safe.
Dating someone with Madrid's complex personality would require understanding and patience. You'd navigate the nuances of his sly and manipulative tendencies, balancing them with the genuine affection and sincerity he shows in your relationship. It would be a delicate dance, but one that would only strengthen your bond.
In the depths of your relationship, Madrid would also reveal his intimate side. Casimiro, the real name behind a glorious nickname. He'd be a great listener, always there to lend a sympathetic ear and provide unwavering support. You'd share your dreams, fears, and secrets, forging a connection that transcends words
You love him as Casimiro. However, there's another side to him which is Madrid, one that reveals itself when he gets jealous and possessive. It's a testament to his strong feelings for you, but his treatment afterwards is not of certain.
His jaw tightens, and his gaze sharpens, fixating on the conversation. His body language becomes slightly more protective, and he unconsciously steps closer to you with his arm wrapped around your lower back.  His touch is both reassuring and subtly possessive, a silent declaration to the room that you're with him.
He mutters softly into your ear and pulls you close to his chest, "por favor quédate cerca de mí, bonita." (please stay close to me, pretty)
He'd be understanding all throughout the night, his patience is long but when it comes to people wanting to waltz you away from him? You'll never hear the rest of it from him. He is instantly irritated and is passively aggressive till he burns low of understanding. His replies would be snarky or sarcastic, murmuring insults under his breath.
As the night comes to an end and you head home together, Madrid's earlier jealousy and possessiveness seem to fade, replaced by the magnetic allure and charm you've come to love. But the incident serves as a reminder that, beneath it all, his passionate feelings for you run deep, and he'll do whatever it takes to ensure you remain his.
This man would offer you the two sides of himself. You love him first as Madrid and you even loved him as Casimiro more but you'd never fail to love him a whole.
