i'm rereading tbosas rn and 'snow is uniquely evil/has a Scary Personality Disorder' i think is a takeaway you can get from the text especially if you're reading with that mindset but i believe that it is a rather stifling and boring take on the story and themes, which are pretty multifaceted imo and boil it down to a simple morality tale on bad boyfriends rather than the really tragic corruption arc it is.

I think sometimes people go into a media with a set opinion/moral or they see something along the way that they can attach that moral to, and then they get really attached to that interpretation, only to find themselves disappointed when later events reveal the media/writers have their own moral in mind. And then they take it out on the media (bad writing/inconsistent/etc.) or on other fans (my way is the only way type thinking) rather than admit that their interpretation differs from the writer’s intent or that they originally misinterpreted something. Or just that there are multiple ways to interpret something or that some plot points are complex.

And I think this can especially happen with Wicked when somebody watches Part 1 and gets really attached to Elphaba’s plotline, awaiting the moment when she overthrows the government and makes everything better, only to realize at the end that Wicked had different themes in mind, which Glinda is very central to and not just in a, “she does everything wrong” way.

omg totally agree! some additional thoughts, though:

wicked is a tragedy, and both elphaba and glinda's ending show the tragedy of extremist and institutional politics respectively

elphaba's decides to defy the wizard because she cannot tolerate injustice and is extremely principled. and i think this is good. we should all strive to be more like elphaba, to stand up against injustice, to put ourselves at risk for the good of others

unfortunately, all of the things that make elphaba a good person are also the things that lead to her downfall. she's admirable for not being willing to negotiate with the wizard, the wizard is horrible, but this also means she sacrifices all of her social capital. elphaba does good things as the wicked witch, and she frees a lot of animals. but ultimately, the system of oppression is so much bigger than what she can fix. she's left exiled from oz, the glorious revolution she imagined kinda a failure

glinda chooses to stay in large part because she is selfish, and willing to tolerate/ignore some level of injustice for her own benefit. there is a limit to how much glinda is willing to exploit others for her own good, but she's objectively more selfish than elphaba. a lot of the good she does it superficial. she's the ultimate liberal, i fear

and selfishness is what causes her to lose elphie and fiyero at the end of the musical. but because she's played the game, she's the only one left with any real political power. she's the one who ultimately overthrows the wizard and morrible, and she's the one who's able to do good

so wicked speaks to a fundamental contradiction in unjust power structures. gaining political power means you have to be selfish enough to ignore the suffering of others. standing against the system may be the morally correct thing to do, but it means giving up social capital within the system

wicked resolves this tension by arguing that you need elphaba and glinda, together, to bring about effective change. glinda ultimately tries to rule oz how elphaba would've wanted her to and in the name of fulfilling elphaba's dreams and honoring her. their love for each other is ultimately what changes them (and oz) for the better. they balance each other out, make up for each other's shortcomings

elphaba is what changes glinda and motivates her to stand against injustice, but they can only make effective change by utilizing the social capital she's accumulated, which is why elphie insists glinda doesnt clear her name

and honestly i think a lot of ppl are just hella disillusioned with institutional politics (which i mean can you blame them look at the state of america dawg) and see the only way forward irl as elphaba-esque revolution. and if you think that good on ya god speed but like that's not the message of wicked lol its just not. and i think a lot of glinda hate just comes down to not agreeing with wicked's message and contorting plot points in the musical to align with a certain worldview

THEO!!!!! MY BELOVED!!!!!! I love talking about him!!!

Theo is one of my protagonists from my Doctor Who fanfic (spin-off fanfic, story written in the same universe, idk), and has so far been my pov character. Gosh, I dunno even where to start with him. He’s the third son of a British aristocrat from the 1830’s. He’s fresh out of university. Black coffee is the only thing holding his sanity together. He hates his siblings and they hate him. He’s a fencing prodigy. He could down a shot of espresso in one gulp without flinching. He needs a hug but he’d never accept one. He’s been ordained in the Church of England. He says he doesn’t believe objective goodness or “good” people exist. He’d literally throw himself in front of a bullet for any man, woman, or child. He’s a mess of dichotomies, and he knows it.

Part of my thesis statement for him that I try to keep in mind when writing for him is that if he were born in the 21st century, he would have been a huge Marvel fan. He would’ve been the eight-year-old boy running around in a Captain America costume. However, he was born in the early 1800s, so how that translates is that he was a big fan of Arthurian legend, other romantic tales of chivalry, The Faerie Queene, and the like. But, all of this to say, he was a child who was fundamentally good, and, most importantly, actively believed in goodness and truth…

���which kinda sucks when your dad is secretly the leader of a crime syndicate. You know that moment you have as a child where you first become truly conscious of the evil in the world? Theo’s was dramatic, to say the least—he figured out what his father’s “business” was when he was eleven or twelve years old, found out that all of his older siblings (who he had idolized up until this point) were all involved in it in some way, and that his father had been grooming him to be his successor. Not only did this shatter his belief system, but his life became a living nightmare after refusing to have anything to do with it.

It occurred to me that nihilism may not be the right word to describe what he descends into afterwards to cope—it’s less that he doesn’t believe that good and evil exist, and more like he believes the existence of good doesn’t matter, as he believes it will always be overpowered. He often struggles to see any good in the world and tends to believe the worst of people because he is so quick to recognize evil—he can’t see the forest for the trees. As far as he’s ever seen, the bad guys always win. What’s the point of even trying?

When thinking about Theo, I often think about a scene from The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey, where the protagonist is going through something similar:

“Let me ask you: Have you ever had a dream in which, having spied a deadly snake at your feet, you suddenly begin to see snakes everywhere – suddenly realize, in fact, that you're surrounded by them?"

Reynie was surprised. "I have had that dream. It's a nightmare."

"Indeed. And it strikes me as being rather like when a person first realizes the extent of wickedness in the world. That vision can become all-consuming – and in a way, it, too, is a nightmare, by which I mean that it is not quite a proper assessment of the state of things. For someone as observant as you, Reynie, deadly serpents always catch the eye. But if you find that serpents are all you see, you may not be looking hard enough.

You would think, with this mindset, that Theo wouldn’t try—but that isn’t actually the case. Despite everything he tells himself, he can’t quite seem to help but to do the right thing, even when it inconveniences or even seriously hurts him. Not to quote Kenobi, but it’s like an itch—he can’t help it. He’ll look you dead in the eye and assert that nothing really matters and fighting for just causes is a pointless, Sisyphusean concept that always ends in defeat, and simultaneously is the most noble, chivalrous guy you’ve ever met. He’s a mess and I love him. Don’t worry, his worldview is about to get rocked by the peppiest Time Lord you’ve ever met.

Some random things about him: when he starts time traveling, he gets really into late 90s/early 00s grunge (Yellowcard’s Ocean Avenue in particular). He’s rarely to be seen not in a black suit from some era, he wouldn’t know casual if it smacked him in the face. Joker is working on introducing some color into his wardrobe. He has a stepmother and two younger half-siblings that he does actually care about very much. Aside from literature, he has an interest in history, archeology, and architecture. He had a canary named Atalanta as a child.

I'm having difficulty with trying to place some of my fandom's feelings about misogyny in our source materials, GoT and HotD. On the one hand, I can understand how as women, we may not want to be confronted with the pitfalls and dangers of misogyny in the real world in a fantasy story with dragons, but on the other hand, it isn't like GRRM discusses misogyny in the books without tact. Margaery, Sansa, Cersei, and now Rhaenyra all have complicated relationships with gender and power in their own storylines that make sense in the context of the world. And GRRM doesn't shy away from showing the dangers of masculinity, either. Like, how mens' prides can doom themselves, their families, and entire nations, how most of the ones who die in battle are the poor foot soldiers who are usually men. Even how some men, in their pursuit of perfection/reinvention through their sons, harm the rest of their family, like Tywin. Or how there are men who use others that he thinks are weaker than him (sex workers, women, children, the poor) to feel bigger and more important, but their harm doesn't actually improve themselves, so they repeat cycles of hurt.

I don't think people are inaccurate in saying there is misogyny in the books, but this misogyny is purposeful and not accidental. Idk, to me pointing out how Cersei thinks misogynistic things about other women is like pointing out there's racism or homophobia in a Baldwin novel... yes, that's the point. Do you or others think that there's a disconnect between audiences of fantasy and mainstream? Like, with some people just wanting fun escapism but being reminded of the real worldvs. people who just want the story as-is. Because sometimes it sounds like when Anglophone westerners try to make "feminist" retellings of myths like The Iliad about Helen or Briseis, when all it ends up doing is proving that maybe Homer was more conscious of the realities and perspectives of women than they gave him credit for, or that they missed the point of Helen's story to begin with. Sometimes I think modern reviewers/critics get so caught up in pointing out every societal ill without context of the work, that we present discussions of these ills as failing of the work. Any thoughts?

A lot of "feminist" retellings are junk that misses the point of the original, sure, but the complaints I've heard about GoT are mostly about "But it's realistic though!" bullshit, particularly about the show rather than the books.

It's realistic for women to face sexual violence. It's also realistic for men to face it. It's also realistic for women to have nice lives.

This is fiction: everything someone chooses to put on page or on screen was just that: a choice.

I haven't consumed any of these canons. In the books' case, I hadn't heard of them back when I read fantasy doorstops by men. I no longer do that unless it's a queer book.

The show broke one of my cardinal rules: female full frontal without equal or greater male full frontal presented equally sexily and GOD DAMN shaved pubes that 1. don't make sense and 2. aren't equally common on men.

I'll watch a rule of horny show, but not if it's aimed at someone else's libido.

In the horny premium cable with sex and gore realm, I did watch the first season of Spartacus. That show was campy trash in many ways, and far less critically acclaimed, but it managed to show vastly more male full frontal and a really sensitive depiction of sexual coercion of a big, manly dude and what it did to him emotionally.

Lucy Lawless' horrible slave owner character was fantastically interesting and also shaped by misogyny and the expectations that she was only valuable for bearing an heir. All kinds of awful things happened in that season, but the only time I got the feeling we were there to gawk at tragedy porn or naked bodies, it was men on the receiving end.

People see GoT as neutral because they're so used to only seeing media that is by and for straight guys who are used to fapping to women's crying faces and calling it realism.

I can't speak to the books. From what people have said, they sound marginally more thoughtful than the show but still firmly in the Old Guy SFF tradition where "historical realism" upon which one builds one's dragon fantasy realm means abused women, not third gender priests or Muslim travel writers or any of the other underused historical shit you could pull from.

I'll give GRRM that many of the other cliched books are stealing from him and not vice versa, but this trend is more than old enough to predate A Song of Ice and Fire, which wasn't published till 1991.

So no, I don't think it's about escapism. I think it's about being bored of the same old, same old.

The DragNET

DragNET stands for Dragon Neural Experience Technology.

It all started many, many years ago when a single dragon started falling asleep in the middle of the city of D'Rana. It wasn't uncommon for dragons to just do weird shit for no reasons, and the people of Erit have long accepted that dragons are much akin to weather events or earthquakes. You just have to deal with dragons as they happen.

But this seemed odd, even for dragon behavior. If one dragon would wake up, another would immediately fall asleep in its place.

"Well," one human said one day. "If it's going to sleep here, we should probably take the opportunity to figure out what the hell dragons even are."

Through various experimentation and trial and error, the citizens of D'Rana managed to access the dragon's very mind, whereupon they were greeted by the only known communication between dragon and mortal: "YES!" it said--a remark which printed out on the very first terminal.

To sum up the next hundred years, the species of Erit managed to develop a network we would think of as the Internet. Not only does this NET contain the vast knowledge of dragons (much of which is uninterpretable by... well. Anyone) but the NET is able to store and relay information in nearly infinite amounts. It's theorized that the sleeping dragon is only the base part of the DragNET, and that all dragons are somehow participating in it at all times.

Because the basis for all devices contains the dragon's organic operating system, all devices are known as terminals--extensions of the sleeping dragon. NETware is developed for this system, and would include modules like Brushstroke--a famous art program, or Typit--a word processor. Files are saved to small, flat data crystals which are often used for backup, just in case the DragNET ever fails. It has its temporary hiccups when one dragon wakes and another takes its place, but it's never ceased entirely.

In addition to utility modules, people also develop and share games, or make websites. Some popular sites include:

Absolutely INVU! The album is great, though I don't listen to slower songs that often, but I can play the whole album and be happy <3 I'm usually not the one to bitch about "X is the worst year in kpop" especially since lots of comebacks are coming, but something about this year hits less. We got some gems obviously, but a lot of groups disappoint. I loved the whole Oddinary which is shocking, hopefully same things happens with Movement

London's black taxis are iconic, but that's about it siudusjsjskdhdhshs, yeah expensive af. Other European taxis are just random cars, not so pretty
