It. definitely is a choice when ( typically ) artists decide to draw a female character with a huge chest and make it an integral part of her character and also write about the sexual harassment she had and even joke about it. like it sure!! must've been important to clarify that old men stared at her chest when she was a highschooler and how much she disliked it. That. Definitely improves the story.

I’ve been sensitive about my art lately, I like the style I’ve curated, it’s kind of ugly and gross but it allows me to feel no pressure to be perfect when actually drawing. I hope that other people enjoy my style and work as well, even more so I hope people look at it and think “wow, my art doesn’t have to be perfectly proportionate or aesthetically appealing or conveniently attractive to be enjoyable,” not in a derogatory way to myself (because again, this IS the style I want and enjoy).

Blah blah blah whatever now I’m rambling laaaammmmeeeee. But I am happy people seem to like my art on here, I never really thought it would be something other people except for me and a few others enjoyed. Also yea I play Genshin as seen in the bottom doodles,, but I’m not really one for anime anymore. I think the characters I come closest to liking are Amber and Rosaria (the version of Rosaria I draw looks NOTHING like the og). I really only play the game because my partner likes it and it gives me a chance to enjoy something they enjoy.

Addressing One Thing About The Fanbase

I feel like this isn't talked about enough and it's one of many reasons why I've even made this blog and why I'm in the works of making my Mobox87 rant video, "Filling up the gaps" as to go into further details on topics that previous Mobox87 rant videos don't fully dive into discussing. Such as the topic of talking about Mobox87's fandom which is going to be a 4 part segment in my future video but it might be a 5 part considering the issue I wanna talk about.

Now during the time I have been away from this blog. I've been busy in the works of remaking the FNAF Affinity AU on my new blog that has steadily grown. I did come across a drawing request sent into my dm's that is just repulsive for a ship between Brandy and Alfred which I did call out.

I should mention that back then Mobox87 used to do art requests in her QandA and OC ships were one of her popular demands.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm fine with drawing characters being shipped together since I did accept a request to draw Renata x William in my ask/submission box.

So I'm completely fine with ship requests but don't expect me to do them all the time since I won't deny that there's some I'm not a fan of, such as Brandy x Alfred cause there wasn't any development between them for me to like it nor do I see any kind of romance between Alfred and Brandy ever happening in my remake of the story especially since the original story had changed and tossed that idea away.

Bon-25 and 3dfq23 have shown to have an interest in the character Brandy which if ya go look...

It ain't that pretty looking. It's just vile considering that these two accounts went to comment, reblog and like a post from an account called grandmobox87foodhorse that reposted literal child porn of Brandy which that user has confirmed to be 20 years old.

Ironically enough, this obsession with Brandy wouldn't be the first time I've seen Mobox87's own fans going crazy over in a sexual manner.

Considering Arion the kid was one of these fans who'd prey on users on Amino for having the character set on their profile.

Now what could be the reason why these fans of Mobox87 are obsessed with such a character in such a sexual manner?

Well that's because Mobox87 made NSFW at a young age during the peak of her career online and has exposed her minor audience to all of her explicit art work without a warning and advertised her Tumblr where she got away with it.

Either way, I've blocked these accounts cause I don't want any association with them plus I've made it clear on my blog that the content I'm making is meant for a mature audience so that it isn't targeted to minors or anyone underage but considering it's the internet. I don't have control of who follows and I can't expect to block everyone or anyone all the time if I were to get more attention on the second blog.

Anyways, that's all I wanted to talk about. I will be going off again about this shit if I come across any weird shit.

Last night I was having my video call with Nerdler, and towards the end I asked Mrs. Professor Ex if she could hang out to discuss some deets about Nerdler's birthday stuff. So she says fine and hangs out in the back on her tablet while Nerdler and I are finishing talking presents. And THEN.

Nerdler says she wants some art from HP.

*DISCLAIMER* I realize we all have very strong hate towards the author but my kid is 10 and loves the books and I am not taking that away from her. Period.

Anyway! So I ask, "what kind of art? Like a poster?"

And she says, "no, more like fanart. I want Harry and Draco together."

And I see Mrs. Professor Ex's head shoot up and we lock eyes and there's a moment of silence. Both of us, knowing Nerdler writes fics, are suddenly wondering if she's found Ao3. And we are having the exact same thought. And I see the moment Mrs. Professor Ex realizes, "I don't have to parent this one." And she grins and just waits.

And I say, "you mean you want Harry and Draco like................. kissing?"

And Mrs. Professor Ex dies laughing.

And Nerdler goes, "Ew! No! Nobody is kissing anybody! I want them like being friends with maybe Ron and Hermione like chibi style in the background looking weirded out about it! I don't ship Drarry, Draco is awful towards Harry!" (She hasn't finished the series yet because it gets a little intense for a 10 year old later on.)

So Mrs. Professor ex goes, "Where did you LEARN those terms?!"

And me, having guessed, says at the same time as Nerdler, "friends at school." Even though it is now confirmed she is not yet to the point of shipping and romance is still gross.

And just to make extra sure, I ask, "do you read HP fics online?" (I don't wanna ask directly about any sites just in case she gets curious and gets access to one of the adult computers without child protections in the house.)

And she says, "no."

And Mrs. Professor Ex and I are out of the WHAT HAS SHE FOUND ONLINE hole.

And with the very last of my dignity, I say, "okay, I'll ask around about anyone who would be willing to do some HP fanart for you for your birthday."

And Mrs. Professor Ex says, "that was such a well-navigated minefield."

And I'm like "wow, being the mom of a pre-teen is very hard."

Trailermania and Other Things

Wow, look at that! A new trailer Pixar's ELEMENTAL, and a first trailer for DreamWorks' upcoming sequel TROLLS BAND TOGETHER! Plus other cool things!

TROLLS BAND TOGETHER looks cute and fun, much like its predecessors. What stuck out to me, and many others, was that groovy surreal 2D animated sequence that I hope we see more of in the movie proper. More weird shifts in art styles like that, please, because the first TROLLS had some moments like that, and TROLLS WORLD TOUR had some little details here and there along with its distinct colorful worlds. The story seems markedly smaller-scale than WORLD TOUR, sort-of circling back after going big. I think releasing it five days before Disney Animation's WISH, however, isn't all that smart... And weird, considering that in many European territories, the movie is aiming for a September/October bow, but what do I know?

ELEMENTAL's new proper trailer gives us a much better idea of what director Peter Sohn's new Pixar movie is really made of. They got the basic premise out of the way with the teaser, which is - quite frankly - a teaser's job. They're made for Average Joe and Jane Soccermom, not nerds like you and I. The new trailer showcases all the fun worldbuilding and just how many gags they can stretch out of this idea: Elements being living beings. Very cartoony, very much made for animation, plus it even pokes fun at its own world. That whole quip about the purpose of chain-link fences is a line that would be even funnier in one of the CARS movies. Peter Sohn had said that the story was very personal to him as a child of Korean immigrants living in New York in the '70s and '80s, and I think we're seeing shades of that in this new trailer. But yes, visually a treat. Colorful AF, with some of that midcentury modern graphic design thing going on with the movie's logo and title cards, much like INSIDE OUT. What's exciting me about this movie is that it's animated characters where everything about them - flowing water, waving fire, etc. - is moving. It's like, super-animated.

And as a treat? Pixar's attaching CARL'S DATE, a much-delayed episode of the UP spin-off Disney+ series DUG DAYS, to the movie. This will be the first Pixar short to run in movie theaters since BAO back in 2018, which of course screened before INCREDIBLES 2. TOY STORY 4 in 2019 ran with *no* short whatsoever, and ONWARD had a Simpsons short - of all things - attached to it. SOUL went straight to Disney+ alongside the short that *would've* accompanied it in theaters, BURROW. LIGHTYEAR was the first Pixar film in theaters, domestically, since ONWARD, and that ran with no short.

More animated shorts in the cinema, pretty please.

I'm also more confident in its box office prospects. It's suggested that former Disney CEO Bob Chapek's heavy pivot to streaming has really hurt Disney's animated output in the pandemic era, from both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. A sort of "we can just wait for that to come out on Disney+, when it's free" mentality from potential moviegoers... Meanwhile, Illumination's SING and MINION sequels did pretty great regardless of Peacock's existence, ditto DreamWorks' PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH. These three movies are some of the only animated theatrical-release movies to cross $100m at the domestic box office, and Pixar's LIGHTYEAR did manage to get past that as well, off of its fine opening weekend gross. ELEMENTAL is the first original Pixar movie to hit theaters since ONWARD, which we can't use to gauge its prospects because that opened right before everything shot down in March 2020.

That all being said, this trailer I feel will work on moviegoers. It's a fun premise, and the trailer doesn't hesitate to show lots of the gags and jokes that they pull from it, and it looks colorful. The general public likely associates Pixar with this kind of story (despite online pop culture "experts" insisting that the movie looks like a "parody" of Pixar's past successes), so it could open okay and have solid-to-great legs! Pixars usually cost over $150m to make, so they better hope this one's a blockbuster. As in, opens with at least $45-50m and then legs it past $150m domestically and more than double that worldwide. I want it so succeed, Pixar hasn't had a genuine box office success since TOY STORY 4 back in 2019, and I'd hate to see an original movie struggle.

Summer 2023 is quite crowded in terms of family movies and four-quadrant spectacles, I must say. DreamWorks' RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN opens two weeks after ELEMENTAL, and ELEMENTAL opens two weeks after SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, which itself opens a week after Disney's LITTLE MERMAID remake... And mixed in with these are THE FLASH and the fifth INDIANA JONES movie. Pretty crowded couple of weeks I must say. A statistic back in 2014, which I bring up *a lot*, showed that the average American family hits the cinemas four times a calendar year. I'd imagine that number is even lower in the pandemic era, and I believe the stat because I've been working at a movie theater since August of 2015... And lemme tell ya, sometimes I do a double take on what I've charged my customers for tickets and concessions.

So, yes, lots of families and other moviegoers have become choosier. I feel like we're seeing that with superhero movies this year, honestly, what with ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA having abysmal legs after its giant opening, and SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS straight-up imploding. In such a competitive marketplace, you really need to stand out... not to pretend I know a thing or two about boring economics and capitalism. I think ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is locked to do well, and on the "live-action" end, THE LITTLE MERMAID and DIAL OF DESTINY will do very well. As for RUBY GILLMAN... If we are to assume it cost $80m max to make, then it could perform like THE BAD GUYS - which narrowly missed $100m domestically and made $250m worldwide - and be considered a success. Okay $20m-ish opening, 3 1/2x multiplier to get it past $70m domestically, add about $150m overseas, all set! THE BAD GUYS had a similarly cutting-it-close marketing campaign, with the teaser bowing in December and the movie proper hitting in April. RUBY GILLMAN's trailer is now out, and the movie is literally three months away. I think they seem confident in this one. From what I understand, PUSS IN BOOTS Dos' Oscar campaign kind of got in the way of them getting the word out on RUBY GILLMAN earlier this year, and of course... A tiny movie Universal is releasing in a week... I'm sure you've never heard of it... It's called THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE.

Anyways, we now await trailers for... Netflix/Annapurna's NIMONA (summer), Netflix/Pearl's THE MONKEY KING (sometime this year), Disney Animation's WISH (November 22nd), Netflix/W/M's LEO (also Nov 22nd), Illumination's MIGRATION (December 22nd), and Aardman/Netflix's CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET (to be determined, later this year). And for whoever is interested, the 2nd PAW PATROL movie as well. Eatin' good, as they say.

1.) Cruelty squad.... obsessed. gnarly, gunky, gross. genuinely gets me laughin + I actually really love the controls + level design. only complaint is no multi-player. Give me a grappendix irl.

Killer 7... I enjoy this quite a bit but I haven't finished it and I'm really shite at it! Love the concept and the story is weird . Ticks all the boxes but yeah.

Thank you for giving me an excuse to talk about myself!!

A song I consider perfect? My taste in music is kind of ridiculously varied. But honestly?? Bohemian Rhapsody might be perfect. I know it’s like everyone’s favorite song or whatever, and I should pick like, some Mahler symphony or some Björk mouth sounds, but okay what are my criteria for perfection when it comes to songs?

One, it should be able to express a spectrum of emotions and generate empathy within the listener. Two, it should have a melody you can recall well enough that at least parts of it get stuck in your head. Three, musicians who cover it should be able to add their own twists and style innovations but it remains recognizable. Four, it should make people stop and want to listen to it all the way through.

The audience can vary of course so “people” and “musicians” and “listener” and “you” might be a million people or it might just be fifty people in a niche theme bar or it might be just you and your shipmates. But Bohemian Rhapsody can get a stadium of gross teens singing in complex harmony. You can play it on a carousel organ or mumble it under your breath while doing chores and people can still ID it. The emotional journey of the song transposes from an incredible queer anthem to literally any challenge or coming of age you want. The vocals are so incredible that Freddie Mercury’s voice like, spiritually imprints his energy on everyone who gives it their all. It broke through genres and cultures and arbitrary industry standards and makes no sense on paper but it’s transcendent. Please enjoy it on a 100 year old fairground organ.

What am I currently learning about? Right now nothing super in particular. I’m honestly kind of in hibernation mode cuz we’ve entered the season in Seattle where I feel like there’s two hours of sun a day and it rains constantly. Personally and fandom wise I’m still on a Stranger Things fic binge and I’ve learned that I’m grateful to be an old because if I were younger I would have the biggest fucking celebrity crush imaginable on Finn Wolfhard, because he so perfectly encapsulates my younger self’s type that it’s insane. As it is I merely have cuteness aggression about him and want to feed him pie and encourage his dreams, thank god. So, like, self-knowledge is good.

Hrmmmm. Oh, also, I’ve been discussing/teaching color theory to my friend who is an indie game designer (play project O.R.B.! It’s free! Explore a mysterious ocean and find rainbow crystals!) and because of that I’ve been refreshing and updating a lot of the things I learned about fifteenish years ago when I was getting my BFA. Do you know about the CIELAB Color Space??? Color science is wild, man, cuz it’s like our meat brains trying to quantify our collection interpretation of sensory information but also fused with cultural preferences and personal histories and technological limitations. My friend is a programmer by trade so I keep bringing up art history references he has no clue about and he’s like “wow, I didn’t know art looked like this ever” and I’m like “surprise, artists can also be autistic!” And he’s like “give me homework” and I’m like “I don’t know how to handle this kind of power” so that’s been fun! We’ve been having kind of a break for a month though cuz he is the at-home dad for two young kids and holiday season is upon us. I hope we can get back together for some more color theory time before next year.

(Semi) Deep dive into Larry Stylinson Obsession

Ive realize the amount of people who might hate me for this but it's something I want to talk about. I might write some more about Larry but this is what I started with

I’ve grown up with One Direction since i was seven years old. I had no feelings about the ship Larry Stylinson until 2020 when i had a One Direction spike. At that time I became obsessed with the ship. Now my opinions on the ship are very mixed to say the least. I think with Fandom culture you can’t control what people do but at the same time fandom culture can take it too far. There is a boundary between love and respect for a celeb and borderline obsession and violating privacy. But wait, who is larry stylinson?

Larry Stylinson is the ship name of two members of boyband One Direction: Louis tomlinson and Harry Styles. The ship came about when fans started to notice how flirty and close the two were at the beginning of the band. Online there are a surplus amount of compilation videos to watch abou the two during that time period that it even more clear to fans of their “secret relationship” today there a lot rumors of the two writing songs about each other, most promemtly Louis’s song “always you”. He said that he wrote the song about his longtime girlfriend, but louis and harry shippers think otherwise.

When talking about Larry you have to discuss about fandom culture and social media. During the early 2010s, fandom culture was starting to become really big with the release of Tumblr. People would make blogs dedicated to their interests, writing fanfiction,posting gifs, creating art work and memes. I think a reason why Larry got so popular was because of the influx of content. People were able to share their theories on the ship to other people who felt the same as them. Fans of the ship considers themselves “larries”

This ship also created backlash though for people dubbed as “antis” or “anti-larries” these people believe that louis and harry were never together and it was just a figment of some crazy fans imaginations. They also believe that most of these fans are reaching for some crazy gay fetishization of men. I do believe that fetishizing and sexualizing gay men is something that happens a lot in fandoms with two men being particularly flirty. It’s a very small portion of this fandom that does this though and you see it mostly in fanfiction.

On the topic of fanfiction, i feel like it’s fuel to the fire when it comes to Larry ship. Having read some of this fanfiction on the writing site Wattpad myself all i can say is…wow. A fanfiction i read for this research was a 18 year old student louis and a 31 year old teacher harry. The story was how Louis accidentally got the wrong number from his friend and the number belonged to His teacher Mr. Styles. Even though Louis is a legal adult, this story at times felt kinda gross. They have a 13 year age gap between them. Harry’s character also had realized how wrong it was to get involved with a teenager through text. His character should’ve block louis number super quick. This writing piece also has a lot of erotica bewteen the two characters,Mind you the 13 year age gap.

I did tend to see plefera of work making one of the two a crossdresser or very feminine. I have no problem with crossdressing as gender roles suck. The writer way of writing the subject is more than less a feminization of gay men. Not all gay men are super feminine, wear dressers and put on makeup. They also always make them the submissive one, a tasteless stereotype. Writers also play into the repressed gay bully which is problematic on it’s own in the media.

There are a lot of larry fanfictions on the internet like the two I mentioned,but thinking of these being two real people make me uncomfortable on so many different levels. Thinking of this writing piece as fiction, the stories are just problematic. But these stories are not just fiction in the dictionary sense. This is a made up situation involving real people with real feelings. In addition, a big amount of writers include smut in their works which is just groteques and fetish written. Never is it authentic, people writing erotica on gay men as a fantasy kink.

As a fanfiction writer myself, i don’t think writing fanfiction, smut or non-smut, is horrible. I’d never write anything involving real people though. I do that out of respect, i would never want anyone to write that stuff about me.

A huge problem with the fandom too is not respecting louis,harry and the people around them. Fans of the ship goes as far as to say that Louis’s child, freddie, is not actually his child. Freddie is a child who is not old enough to defend himself. Shippers treat this as a way to fight for larry and non-shipper as a way to be against larry. The Treatment should be neither. They should treat none of it as gasoline for their fights.

Larries also don’t respect Louis’s girlfriend Eleanor or Harry girlfriend (now ex) Olivia. Eleanor and Olivia aren’t fantastic people and have done promblematics things, but fans are never about that, it’s just larry. In the early days of the ship there was a lot of conspiracy theories that Eleanor wasn’t real. With Olivia, people think it’s a pr stunt to make harry more famous. I don’t necessarily disagree as it just comes off as pr, being that they get pictured a lot together.

I don’t hate larry shippers though, frankly i also ship them myself. I steer towards having a parasocial boundary though. I fully support them if they are together but i don’t push them to reveal or if they aren’t together i don’t push them to be in relationship. The ship not being real just drove a big stake into Louis and Harry’s friendship.

Shippers without realizing, push louis and harry to also come out or have a label.This is a problem because people deserve to have something very private be respected. Harry identifies as unlabeled and Louis hasn't disclosed his sexuality 100%.

Theres this one video were Louis said “I'm gay, it's pretty unfortunate, Eleanor (his girlfriend)” then management tells him to be quiet that gets flown around in regards to Louis sexuality. The video comes off as him saying he's gay. From a queer person's perspective, Louis could've been joking as being gay when he's bisexual or some queer identity. I do that. It's not untrue. I think most people have the perspective it's Louis saying he's gay to Eleanor who might have feelings for him but of course he wouldn't recipicate because he's gay

I could speculate about Louis’s sexuality for hours on end but unless Louis fully confirms it by words all I can do is leave it be. It doesn't matter in the long run, it's who Louis is as a person that matters more and his music. Louis is also currently in a relationship with a girl that he keeps extremely private,for good reason too. Most fans hate on his girlfriend.

While i do think it’s possible louis could be queer and closted and that his management is telling him not to come out. Examples of this are New kids on the Block’s Jonathan Knight who was out in the industry but not to fans, he was told it would ruin him and the band’s career. Another being Lance bass who closeted felt like him being his true self would ruin Nsync’s career. It’s totally possible this is happening with louis. But no one knows except Louis

I think there could've been something between the two based on leaked videos and very frequent “conicedences” between management and how distant the two got. I just don't think it's our right to out them or treat them like fictional people without actual lives. They're people too

Bon l'eau a bien coulée sous les ponts depuis mon dernier post confession haha

J'ai essayé de supprimer le plus possible de mes anciens post parce que je suis sur un nouveau départ, même si je suis toujours dans la merde financièrement c'est enfin le dernier mois où ça sera comme ça, c'est la dernière ligne droite. Ce soucis me préoccupe beaucoup mais je suis heureuse que se soit bientôt fini. J'habite maintenant pas loin de la Suisse et je vais commencer à bosser là-bas. La galère, c'est enfin fini. Je vais même pouvoir me refaire tout un set up rose avec un ordinateur de bâtard tout ça pour être stuck silver sur lol ou crever des ballons sur bloons, j'ai hâte 💫

Avec mon copain on loue une maison chouette et on est heureux nous deux et son chat ainsi que son meilleur ami qui vie en collocation avec nous et qui est toujours aussi sympa :) Je suis aimée par quelqu'un, et même par plusieurs personnes, sa famille me soutiens énormément, je me sent chez moi. Je me suis libérée aussi de la peur de certaines choses , je m'habille avec mon propre style et ça m'est maintenant un peu plus égal qu'on me regarde avec des yeux globuleux dans la rue.

J'ai quitté mon travail en France et heureusement, je vivais un enfer là bas , déjà en terme de sexisme en tt genre je ne vous raconte pas toutes les lignes que mes collègues et clients ont franchi , c'était un enfer. Je me faisais arnaquer sur mon contrat et ma paye, et quand je suis partie ma patronne m'a dit que c'était de ma faute et celle "du monde virtuel dans lequel tu vis" si j'étais atteinte d'anorexie, autant dire que j'ai bien fait de partir !

Qui plus est , en dehors de jouer je fais tellement de petites choses maintenant, je bricole , je peint , je dessine , je confectionne plein de petites choses et je prévois de me prendre une tablette graphique et la formation de Marc brunet pour apprendre à dessiner pour de vrai. Au final j'ai toujours voulu passer à la partir créative sans connaître les bases et j'ai de grosses lacunes. J'espère qu'un jour je pourrais faire des splash art pour un jeu cool ;)

Mon copain est un très très gros joueur et j'ai enfin joué et fini gta 5 grâce à lui et ptn quel jeu ! Récemment il m'a fait découvrir samouraï champloo et wow... WOW

Et puis , je suis passée à autre chose depuis plus d'un an maintenant, sur cette histoire avec c. Encore aujourd'hui c'est compliqué de dire pourquoi ça m'a marquée comme ça, mais je pense que j'ai compris le pourquoi du comment j'ai vécu les choses de cette manière, et mine de rien je pense que j'avais besoin que tout ça arrive pour me faire me rendre compte de certaines choses ! Je ne crois pas au destin ni en dieu mais à cette époque j'y ai presque cru hahaha ! En tout cas j'espère qu'il est heureux c'est tout ce que je lui souhaite !

Enfin bref j'oublie beaucoup de choses , il y a bien sûr des choses qui ne sont pas allées depuis tout ce temps, j'ai perdue une amie chère , enfin perdue dans le sens où on a comme "rompu" et c'était très très dur, mais ça sera la sujet d'un autre post pendant une nuit d'insomnie , c'est beaucoup trop long et tortueux et encore aujourd'hui c'est une plaie qui cicatrice difficilement.

Quelqu'un avec un compte anonyme m'a contactée sur Instagram pour me dire qu'il ou elle avait lu ce blog à l'époque où je postais des choses très sombres , dans des périodes très difficile pour moi, je ne sais pas qui c'est mais si tu lis ceci , merci infiniment. Je ne sais pas, j'avais besoin de ton message , il m'a touchée, et sache qu'aujourd'hui je vais mieux , et j'espère que tu vas bien aussi.

The 25th Year | Week 5 | Shading, Terrain, Editor

Hello and welcome to week 5 of my kinda-weekly blog! This week, I’ve been working on some possible improvements to shading, changing the way I color the terrain, and some editor stuff.

Shading

Last time, I discussed my decision to change the game’s art style from lowpoly to smooth. I’ve been messing around with an idea I had: shading detail.

Currently, the shading looks like this:

Which is fine, but a bit basic. A few days ago, an idea popped into my head. Would it be possible to use a noise texture to change how the shading is applied? I implemented a basic version of this concept, and this is the result:

It’s certainly made it look more interesting. Not necessarily good, but for a first attempt it’s not bad. I’m currently mapping this texture

onto the sphere with some triplanar mapping. It’ll look fine on models that don’t animate, but as soon as something bends the effect will probably look like shit. Maybe screen-space mapping would look better…?

Terrain Colors

With this change of art style, the terrain is now looking a bit out of place. Previously, I was just changing the terrain mesh’s vertex colors, like so:

Pretty bad, but it kinda worked with the old style.

If I were to just sample the layer mask directly, it would look like this:

Wow. That looks even worse.

But why?

The way I’m handling my terrain layers is really flexible, but also really unorthodox and it has one rather big limitation.

Typically, games represent their layers with a splatmap. Each color channel of the image (RGBA–red, green, blue, alpha) represents a material, such as grass or stone. This method is fine, but you’re limited to just five layers (pure black can be a layer too). You’ll need to use multiple splatmaps if you want any more.

I could do it this way, but it sounds like a lot of work to manage. And I’m lazy. So I’ve come up with a different–and much stranger–method.

Rather than use four color channels of a pixel, I just use one–let's call this the Layer Index. I have an image that’s 1 pixel tall and 100 wide, which acts as a color palette. I use the Layer Index as an offset to sample the color palette. 0 is stone, 1 is grass, 2 is dirt, and so on.

(Side note, I’ll almost certainly change how I handle the palette later, because it’s pretty annoying to work with right now)

This is great, because it means I can have a hundred layers, rather than just five. Well, technically I could have a few million, but that’d just be silly.

There’s one big limitation to this system though, I can’t use any texture filtering. If I were to smooth out the pixels, it would mess up the offset, which would give me a mixture of various layers in between each pixel of the splatmap.

So, I can smoothly blend the layer together, and I don’t want to just display raw pixels. So what now? Do I go back to using regular old splatmaps? Do I give up game development and live out the rest of my life as a wandering forest hermit, living off the land until either I or the ecosystem die?

No.

I can’t make it smooth–at least, not easily–but I can offset the position I’m sampling the Layer Index from.

Ok, so it still doesn’t look that great, but it’s better than it was.

World Editor

After some research and experimentation, I’ve decided to build an ‘in game’ world editor, rather than build off of Godot’s like I was initially planning to. Why? The camera.

You see, the further you get away from the center of the world, the fuckier things get. To avoid this, open world games do something called Origin Shifting. You pretty much just take the world, and push everything back so the player is in the middle again.

While working in the editor, I’d like the world to load around me like it would in-game. However, this would require origin shifting to avoid the previously mentioned fuckiness. You’re probably thinking the same thing I was when I started this project; “So what? Just move the editor camera along with everything else. Simple, right?”

Nope.

For reasons beyond my understanding, moving the editor camera through a plugin doesn’t do anything. Well, technically it does, but it teleports back to wherever it was before when you try to move it again.

This–along with some general frustrations with Godot’s plugin system–has convinced me to build a custom world editor.

This is still very early in development, so I don’t have anything substantial to show you right now. I’m not entirely sure how difficult this will be, but I’m sure it’ll be worth it.
