Pairing: Romantic

Talking about current/present Genji in this concept he'd be a mostly calm Yandere due to his lessons with Zenyatta.

He's learned to be patient and to take things slow with his obsession.

There's times where he'll snap in intensity but he quickly tries to calm himself for you.

Genji knows he's killed before, he tries to limit that but he is capable of it.

The thought sometimes flashes in his head, too.

Genji spends most of his obsession giving you your space.

Before and after your abduction he is patient to see how you take to him.

He is already aware he's a monster so he doesn't bother denying it when you confront him.

He slowly tries to build your relationship with gifts and praise.

He'd wait a long time for you to reciprocate.

Genji's start of his obsession is similar to Reaper.

He's a protective guardian from afar, one who isn't quite sure how to approach you at first.

Despite this behavior he would also try to become your friend.

Genji would be a yandere who hides his dirty work from you.

To you he's a hero, one who keeps track of your needs and comforts you.

You have no idea he watches you sleep or threatens those around you.

He makes sure to hide his monstrous side away from you.

Genji never wants to scare you but with his desires it's probably inevitable.

At some point Genji will stop acting like he's just your friend.

Soon the cybernetic ninja seems to want you in his sight at all times.

Even towards fellow Overwatch members or friends you know he shows irritation.

He relies on stalking more often, following you from roof to roof to watch you.

He surprises you with unexpected check ins and appears to lose his temper and patience towards others.

Eventually said behavior will build into him kidnapping you.

If trying to form a relationship naturally with you doesn't work, his patience wears down.

Genji would never hurt you, he is also considerate of how you're feeling.

He may lose it at times and yell... but hr apologizes.

Even when you're locked in his home he's patient.

He deserves to be called a monster, he deserves you to hate him.

But he doesn't care.

Monsters kill, monsters take, when was he ever a hero?

But it doesn't matter now.

He accepts your harsh words... even as you fight him he yearns to hold you close.

-Well, that’s going to be a tough situation. On the one hand, you’re going to be dragged into the meeting room yo have your ear talked off about how dangerous that was and how you can’t just go outside, but on the other; this is what they wanted. They wanted you to stay.

-The ones who will take it the worst are Mercy, Genji, and Mei, in descending order.

-As the first one on the scene, Genji will react pretty bad, ready to attack. That being said, he will get some pause after a moment, wondering why you’re not doing anything. He still thinks you ought to be punished, but he mostly just wants to confine you to your room because you didn’t let anyone know.

-Mei would feel extremely sad and go into melodrama over this, crying to you about why you didn’t think Overwatch was good enough. She’ll also get others a little annoyed with you over it, but she does still in part blame you for this, and would likely take away any remaining privacy you had, going so far as to add security cameras to the bathroom for a couple weeks.

-Aaaand Mercy takes it the worst. By far. Like, seriously, it’s not even close. She wants you to be tied to the bed for a month after that. She is the person who needs to be talked down from trying to commit violence over this situation.

-That being said, on the other hand, there’s Tracer, McCree, and Lucio, who would likely be trying to encourage the reader to have a little bit of freedom to walk around on the outside of the base, insisting that little freedoms keep you from making rash decisions.

He’d be willing to wait until you were ready, wanting it to be a meaningful experience for not only him but also his s/o.

♡ Rammatra: This one also depends on what his s/o is, varies based on if they’re an omnic or human. With an omnic s/o he’d see them as an equal, he’d be much more kind and considerate of their wants and feelings. With a human s/o they’d be more of a pet to him, he’d have no issue taking whatever he wanted from them whether or not they were willing.

♡ Junkrat: He isn’t very self aware when it comes to his obsession, he’s almost completely delusional about their relationship. To some extent he realizes you aren’t together, but he doesn’t care to let his thoughts linger on the fact. Jamison little issue with his s/o’s consent, he makes the act about them, he gets his fulfillment from it by giving rather than receiving.

♡ Soldier 76: Both prefall and current Jack would have little issue with it. He’s in a position of power, and you’re not, he’s a super soldier if he wants to he will. He’s learned not to hold onto guilt, so he won’t feel that for what he’s doing.

♡ Cassidy: He’s a very sex driven person, he can go a little while without it but he expects his s/o to give in to him eventually. His drinking is what leads to it most often, and his s/o can expect no aftercare from him once he’s done.

♡ Reaper: He’s a jealous and possessive person, even before the fall of Overwatch he has sadistic tendencies. Gabriel doesn’t need reciprocation from his s/o, not that he would enjoy it, he just doesn’t need it from them. While he’d be more rough in his Talon era it doesn’t mean he’d be much better before Overwatch’s fall.

Introducing some of the characters Reader will encounter throughout the story. Get to know your monsters in this handy reference booklet!

Fun fact: The names of the characters are quite literally chapters from ‘The Tale of Genji’, one of the earliest existing novels written in the Heian period by noblewoman Murasaki Shibiku. Kiritsubo and Murasaki are your closest companions and bear the names of the main female characters of the story. (They’re men. A little irony.)

The list will be updated as more characters are revealed:

Abe no Nakamaro 阿倍 仲麻呂

Descendant of famous onmyōji Abe no Seimei, Nakamaro rapidly built his own reputation using the powers of yokai he'd captured across the country. His binding powers have yet to be deciphered. It is believed only his own blood can break the contract forged with the legendary beasts.

Known for his ruthlessness, Nakamaro was feared by humans and demons alike. His commissioned portraits often depict him surrounded by dark clouds - a signature detail - emphasizing his evil nature.

As you progress through your journey, you will be plagued by many flashbacks of his cruel deeds. It's almost as if your own hands are tainted by the blood of the yokai standing before you. You vow to free the beasts and prove you are nothing like the vile creature dwelling within your soul.

Kiritsubo 桐壺

The first yokai you encounter. Despite his intimidating appearance, he is the kindest of the group. He is tall and very muscular, with short, straight horns, long silver hair and glowing amber eyes. When he smiles you can spot his sharp, prominent fangs. He has multiple scars on his back, reminiscent of old punishments.

He is a dragon spirit, although his true powers remain unknown. Nakamaro always kept him close and was particularly strict with him, hoping to unlock his dormant potential, to no avail. He begins to show improvement once he embarks on his journey with you. It seems that his desire to protect his new owner was the secret all along.

Kiritsubo is extremely clingy once he gets to know you better. You're kind and patient and nothing like the famous onmyōji before you. He almost can't believe you're part of his reincarnation. He will follow you around everywhere, like a loyal dog, and might be overly touchy sometimes. He can't help it.

Murasaki 紫

Murasaki is the second yokai you meet. He is tall and slender, with long black hair and imposing horns. His deep crimson eyes hold a lot of resentment towards you, or rather whoever lies within you. Despite this, he always holds a disciplined posture and acts very well-mannered.

He used to be Nakamaro's right hand. He is considered to be the most skilled among the legendary yokai. A master of the sword and possessing unmatched intelligence, he served both as an advisor and bodyguard. Always cold and calculated, he rarely shows any hint of emotion. He seems to be quite sarcastic and arrogant.

He doesn't interact much with you in the beginning. In fact, he's most annoyed by the idea of partnering up with a weak human like you. He offers to train you with the sword and teaches you spells and prayers. Despite his complaints, he always protects you from any danger. As you spend more time together, he slowly opens up and might even show signs of attachment.

Suma 須磨

Suma is the biggest of the legendary yokai, towering over everyone with his gargantuan frame. He has bright red hair and large bull horns, with robust features and fierce eyes. He has many tattoos covering his body, going all the way up to his chin.

Suma is a worshipped guardian of war. He lives for battle and is said to reward bravery and courage. Despite this, he has a very approachable personality. He is loud and easygoing, rarely showing signs of distress. He uses a spear when fighting, although he prefers his bare hands. Brute strength is his specialty.

He finds it hilarious that the feared Abe no Nakamaro has been reincarnated into a small girl. He will often joke around with you and challenge you to playfights. When borrowing his powers, you are able to display impressive feats of physical strength. He likes watching you fight and encourages you to train.

Yuugiri 夕霧

Yuugiri is a mysterious yokai. He is pale with rather feminine features, appearing androgynous. He is very elegant and well spoken, although both Kiritsubo and Murasaki have warned you to be wary of him.

He is a serpent spirit, sly and manipulative. He is known for tricking humans and devouring their souls, yet very few can tell his true nature. He is incredibly charismatic and many people fall in love with him, meeting their early demise.

You cannot read him and therefore keep your distance. His twisted smile never leaves his face. He is very interested in you and while his reasoning might be superficial in the beginning, he does become rather attached and tries to prove his honest feelings to you.

Sekiya 関屋

One of the yokai that has remained by Abe no Nakamaro's side, in his resting tomb. He is the one that kept his presence concealed, casting a barrier around the temple for the entirety of his master's slumber.

His main power is casting barriers. Sekiya is the one that guards the entrance and guides you towards the onmyōji for your battle. Once you defeat Nakamaro, he joins your group.

He is very reserved, shy and insecure. He cannot fight properly and often bemoans his lack of purpose. Like Kiritsubo, he falls in love with your kind nature and clings to you, hoping to be of use.

Sakaki 榊

The other yokai to guard Nakamaro's tomb, Sakaki has been tasked to keep his master alive.

He has the ability to heal and even revive under certain circumstances. After your fight against Abe no Nakamaro, he offers to heal your fatal wounds and joins your group.

Sakaki is rather gloomy and depressed by nature. He has an unhealthy obsession with death and often makes grim or unusual remarks. He considers you his muse and will sometimes write unsettling poetry dedicated to you.

Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

For this I will be pulling from current Genji. Genji used to be more selfish and a playboy before his near death experience. Now he is calmer after Zenyatta's teachings and discovering inner peace.

Genji may have bursts where he's intense with his obsession due to his past. However he teaches himself to be patient with his obsession. Especially if you are unwilling at first.

He has learned to take things slow and is patient when giving affection and pursuing his obsession. He starts with gifts and visits, then goes from there depending on how you react.

He is surprisingly methodical compared to his younger self.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

Genji has killed before, many times actually. He's capable of getting messy even if he tries to prevent it. If he feels he has to, he'll get messy. Although he isn't all that happy while doing it.

Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

Due to Zenyatta's teachings he's surprisingly patient with you. He's accepted the fact he's a monster in your eyes, especially if he's kidnapped you. He's just a selfish dragon deep down…

But at least he's your selfish dragon.

Genji would not mock you, he cares for you. His younger self may have but not his current self. He is instead patient in an attempt to have you love him.

He's careful when touching you and backs off when you don't reciprocate. There's constant compliments and gifts but it appears he's slowly trying to build your relationship.

He's patient… but there may be a limit to it.

Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

He tries not to, but he may have to in some cases.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

Quite a bit. He allows himself to be just vulnerable enough around you. He is capable of being serious, but he also wants to rely on someone else other than himself.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Patient and understanding. He knows you don't like the situation and what he's doing. However, he knows you'll get used to it.

This is a hardship you'll both overcome because he loves you. He just needs to be patient and teach you. He'll be gentle….

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

Not a game to him, maybe when he was younger, but not now. He does not enjoy watching you try to leave him.

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

The kidnapping and seeing him kill. Genji nowadays tries to be patient and caring with you, it's what he's learned. So after the initial taking he tries to make you not seem like a prisoner.

Doesn't mean you enjoy any of it.

Then of course seeing him in the act of murder would traumatize you too. So in a way… the “traditional” yandere acts would be the worst experience with him from what I can think of.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

He wants to feel more at peace with you and finally be able to be loved. He wants that with you but understands it will take time. It's something he tries to work towards with you.

He wants you to love him in the end… even if this isn't the right way.

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

Yes but in the present he can cope with it more. While he was more hot headed when younger, now he silently copes. He tells himself he doesn't need to kill or threaten anyone.

But the idea is very appealing when he can only watch you from afar.

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

Genji is very caring. He listens to you (for the most part) and acts accordingly. If you wish to be left alone, reluctantly he will. He may not give you freedom but respects your boundaries.

He is quite protective of you, the first part of his obsession is him acting like a guardian to you. Similar to Reaper he watches you from afar at first, except different from Reaper… he may actually become your friend first.

He's very attentive to you and your needs and can't seem to keep his hands off you. He loves your warmth and is very affectionate. Yet he is capable of tuning it down.

Around others and you he is cautious, yet still tries to be respectful. Luckily you have the older version of Genji in love with you.

But it doesn't appear to stop his habits of stalking and obsessing over you.

Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

He starts by stalking. Maybe he stalks you first before meeting you, or maybe he does it after. Genji is capable of both being your friend, maybe even boyfriend, without you knowing what's behind the scenes.

He'd leave gifts at your doorstep and in your house. He'd slip into your house to check in on you while you sleep. He keeps his darker habits under wraps and out of sight.

In person he's like a close friend. He cares for you and holds you close. He's a shoulder to cry on… a genuinely good person…

Until he snaps and decides he can't deal with it anymore.

He wants… needs you to himself, for one reason or another. What pushes him over the edge? You have no clue.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Hard to say, both yes and no. He hides the darker thoughts from everyone, even you. Other than that he's great to be around for everyone.

Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

Isolation, restraints, maybe when he was younger he'd carve his name on your skin. He wants to respect you but won't stand for escape attempts for disobedience.
