Alexey Volgin is a main character of "Prologue", a novel that N. Chernyshevsky, russian writer and revolutionary, wrote while being in exile. Volgin functions as a stand-in for Chernyshevsky himself, and his views may represent Chernyshevsky's disappointment in his faith in revolution that didn't come.

Achillea filipendulina (fern-leaf yarrow “Coronation Gold”)
When you live in the suburbs, one ‘lucky’ homeowner on every street has a fire hydrant in the front yard. Some people deal with this offensive object by surrounding it with a well-maintained, closely cropped lawn but others simply abandon it to the weeds.
However hardcore gardeners often take the approach, “If life hands you lemons make some lemonade” and they treat the fire hydrant as a garden feature. I think the Green Thumb who lives in this house has done a wonderful job of incorporating this piece of very necessary urban infrastructure. Bravo!

Just some of the flowers blooming in my garden. The cone flowers are not quite ready but the deer didn't eat them so I was excited.
The cosmos and cornflower are from a wildflower seed mix I planted. The hollyhock is a volunteer!
