so here's the deal re: this fucking horseshit. god i hate this.

i, personally, have mostly given up on trying to dodge inclusion in AI datasets. the stuff i make generally isn't what they're looking for anyway and there's no real way to 100% avoid being scraped short of becoming entirely invisible online, which would um, lead to me having no money and dying. that's part of the cruelty of all this, but also, in a way, it's the same risk artists online have always taken; if you want people to see your work, you have to post it knowing that some of those people are fucking lowlife piece of shit scumbags who will try to resell it on redbubble or something for a quick buck. AI is just a new and exhausting way for garbagey people to stink worse. i am not in any way excusing that behavior or trying to imply people should not be mad about it or that we shouldn't condemn this move and fight back. "if you don't want your work stolen, don't put it online" is the kind of shitty Internet Tough Guy talk i've always hated since my dA days. it's as useless and heartless as telling people that if they don't want their bikes stolen, they shouldn't leave them at the bike rack. i'm saying that i, personally, will not let a bunch of soulless thieving shitheads drive me offline. i belong here. they belong in a wifi-proof dumpster.

nightshade and glaze eat my artwork alive. they make it look terrible. when you have to sell things on the basis that they look nice, it's a big problem when protective measures make them look like dogshit. my work is not a good candidate for these processes. even if that weren't the case, i don't have the stamina, especially right now while my chronic pain is flaring for the third month in a row and my adhd meds are scarce, to go back and shade/glaze everything, and it wouldn't work on reblogs anyway. given the way midjourney and its equally stinky siblings have already scraped years and terabytes' worth of image data from popular websites, it doesn't seem worth my time. if you think it is worth yours i am not going to like, yell at you. i am just one person. but i want to be clear about the kind of situations some of us are being forced into.

i think some of the doomsaying about AI and what it will do to us has been overblown-- they need you, for marketing purposes, to believe that someday their shitty robot will be as good at "drawing" and as practical to work with as a human-- but the consequences of "AI" (which is not even actually AI) are already real and visible and obvious to anyone paying attention. i unfortunately am not infinitely wise and powerful and therefore do not have an ideal all-encompassing solution to this deeply stupid problem that the Most Unlikeable Manbabies On Earth have imposed on us after NFTs fizzled out.

what i do have is a very large repository of nice anime and game screenshots i've taken, knowledge of many archives of nice public domain images, a computer that can run nightshade overnight or while i'm off doing other things, and, most importantly, near-infinite capacity for pettiness. i do kinda feel like the jury is still out on how well nightshade/glaze will work in the long run, but in the meantime, i suppose it wouldn't cost me a lot to... perhaps... every time i get Mad About AI™, channel that anger into dumping some thoroughly-but-not-spammily-tagged, high-quality, inconspicuous poison onto this godforsaken hellsite via a secret side blog. i could make a batch of poison ahead of time, keep it on my phone, use my Toilet Scrolling Time or my Public Transit Time to post and tag up an image here and there. it could be a fun challenge to try to make some pretty robot poison that some humans will still enjoy.

the other thing we need to poison at this point, IMO, is the word "AI" itself, by being loudly and mercilessly critical of any company that dabbles in it, the same way we all clowned on any company that pushed their luck with NFT/crypto shit a couple of years ago. we need to have every corporation terrified that association with AI will tank their sales and hurt their brand. AI must = number go down and lots of people screaming at you. companies will fuck around. we must provide the finding-out. we shouldn't have to. but we can!

so make sure to let tumblr know you hate this. maybe you could include this interesting link (tw child abuse) about how Stable Diffusion was trained on some extremely serious crime. or these screenshots of Midjourney devs just sort of admitting what their whole thing is, which i got here but which have kinda been spread all over since January.

spite and anger can be forms of hope. that's all i have to say, or at least all i'm willing to type with my left hand tonight.

Coming into 2024, I had big plans for how I was going to get back on track and get back to posting once a week and yeah, obviously, that hasn’t happened.

But what I have been doing is looking at my Patreon and at my own projects and figuring out some things I need to do differently. Last April, I changed my nom de plume because I wanted a fresh start. Now it’s time to give this entire Patreon project a refresh.

Here’s what’s happened so far:

Deleted my old A.F. Linley website and gave up the domain; the cost for hosting has risen by $200/year and I wasn’t using it as much as I thought I would back in 2018. Also I kept getting spam emails through the contact page.

Took down my Smashwords account; the single title I had managed to self-publish, a short story collection called Creeps, Ghouls and Jewels, had some serious formatting issues that it was not going to be worth the time/money to correct. Plus, I’m not happy with the changes that have come since Smashwords merged with Draft2Digital. (I’m considering moving to Payhip for future self-pubbed titles but that’s a discussion for a different post.)

I’m starting the process of taking down my Redbubble shop and....Okay, actually, I might have done that already? I just went to grab a link to the site in case anyone wanted to order a Moonicorns t-shirt before I deactivated but uh, it looks like it might’ve deactivated itself? Anyway, merch isn’t the right direction for me at this time, but I’ve still got all the actual designs and I really do like the “Finishing Things is Hard” logo, so I’m definitely going to hang onto that and slap that onto some stuff at a different print-on-demand site in the future.

Here’s what’s happening next:

New posting schedule: Starting in April, patrons will receive one short non-fiction post every week (500-1k words) and a piece of fiction every month (2-2.5k words). Oddments posts will continue to be free to read, but these take a decent amount of research and will be sporadic, basically happening around patron-only posts.

Revised patron tier perks: Getting rid of physical rewards and adding more digital ones. More details to come.

Merch question/request. I need a fishing hat, and obviously I'd like to curry favor with the Trawler-Man by repping his holy prayer mark merch. But right now, the only official Silt Verses Redbubble store design available on hats is the season 2 logo.

Would it be a hassle to make the season 1 white-on-black design available for use on hats? I don't want you to have to do any actual work to accommodate my silly request, but on the off hand that it could be accomplished just by checking a box, I thought I'd ask.

Hi, I'm Loo(or Alex), I'm a disabled queer artist and writer as well as a furry vtuber who streams four days a week on twitch(mostly Minecraft but also Soulsborne games and a variety of other stuff).

You may know me from The Tuna Post, in which several thousand of you came together to "force" me to buy damn near 30 American Dollars worth of imported fancy canned tuna to eat and review live on stream. I totally agree with your fanfiction take/ not everything has be sold, however the whole fanfiction argument does fall flat seeing as artists at conventions (and online) sell hundreds of dollars worth of fan art, how is that different? (just to be clear monetizing ff would be the downfall of everything but this is just something I've wondered about, maybe you/someone can explain? It seems to have the same transformative value, perhaps even more so in many cases)

She tried to sue the fanfic folks, not the fan art folks, so the laws around fair use and such are formulated off of that

It’s a long and convoluted story and if you do some searching a lotta people have already explained it in much more detail, but that’s the long and the short of it, and most of the English speaking internet has to abide by US case law

(It’s also why a couple years back there was a panic that Critical Role were suddenly gonna be suing fan artists and everything on redbubble and such got untagged cuz they had to update their trademark policies)

You will also note, however, that those same fan artists are all independent sellers, do not tend to use Amazon, and post all the same art online for free; if there’s a paywall, it’s usually Patreon or one of that lot where you essentially subscribe to a portfolio

So the argument very much does include fan artists, since the vast majority of them do not turn their art into a side business (or full business for the extremely lucky) or ever want to

Just because some people have put in the time, energy, and effort to have their creative pieces put into a physical medium (think binding your fic into a book, since the artists are not selling digital versions but an actual tangible product - digital products are also legally distinct from physical products because the lawyers aren’t done arguing about it yet)

If the laws change at some point in future, yes, you will see Artists Alleys at cons everywhere go down in a blaze of glory… which is why fan artists need AO3 and their lawyers as much as fan writers

They’re guarding the precedent that any of us are allowed to exist

(Personally I also think there’s some mileage in companies understanding that things like posters and keychains of their properties are literally just free advertising; people see the cool art and watch the show

ok i'd apologize to you & everyone else for only blogging about myself and my friends tonight but actually that would be un-sincere because i love my friends so so so much and all of life is about love. anyway here's a long summary of css :

-1. the context: luna @hanjoonhwi got to know mika through me and @ramonapest and so she'd discover old stuff progressively and one day she found css and made it her whole personality (read: blog) because she did that often (for a while she was tomorrowlive because she loved live performances of tomorrow, etc etc etc) and so she saved the url cokestudiostardust or i did. and then we had the fantastic idea of both changing our urls to something super similar to each other for a little while just to confuse the 12 mika blogs here (a small group of which are commonly referred to as "the rodents" due to the existance of an almost-dead discord server that i would like to bring back alive and that you could probably be added to, where we discuss mika) ANYWAY sorry for the slight detour. so yes that was the plan. and then we were like wait we need to include rory (because we had a tiny groupchat called "mouaylor tshirts" <- more lore there but basically luna wanted a mika x taylor x louis collab and rory made a fake poster that i put on redbubble models and so we made a groupchat to discuss business and then ended up being besties). so yes back to the main story. we text rory and we're like hey do you wanna join us in this wild scheme? she was like what scheme? we said say yes or no because we cant tell you unless you're joining. she said yes and we told her everything and also she was moving that same weekend... so it was insane of her to contribute. but yes that's the end of this part

0. the prep: so we saved css url, and 2 typo css urls. picked an icon header and background colour for the blog (#facade pink) and then the point was to confuse people so we didn't want them to be able to scroll adn figure out easily which one is rory vs luna vs me. so what we did is we made rory (?) i think (?) post a link to the css yt video. then we each reblogged it privately to our blogs about 100 times in preparation and then didn't blog until the day of. the day of we unprivated all the posts, so basically if you wanted to see any posts before you'd need to scroll for so long. and we changed our urls (i dont remember who was which url) and icons and headers and colours and made our blogs only available on phone so you couldnt go to archive to figure out who was who. also we had the same blog titles (coke studio stardust) and bios.

1. phase 1: we basically went around blogging normally as if nothing happened, but also sending asks to common mutuals and each others mutuals (ex: "hiii squish!! how are you???") and all of us sending them, to create confusion. did that for about 24 hours. but the thing is we sent the exact same asks and reblogged all the same posts with the same tags. luna and i even managed to confuse rory's sibling and like long-time friend on here. a mika blog @grayskelly we didnt know at the time (but v knows) just joined us (same blog appearance etc) and became our immediate bestie, hence creating the famous and iconic @h-isforhome "big day in mika fandom" post (the first one in the image post you reblogged). also we followed any mutuals that we mutuals with 2 but not 3 of us (pretending we accidentally unfollowed) in prep for phase 2

2. phase 2: (my favourite phase) we "apologized" etc for our behaviour and said we are switching back. BUT we lied (celebrity apology video style), and what we did is switch to each other's!! blogs. so i was luna and luna was rory and rory was me. and it actually fooled people due to all the followings in phase 1 and it being practically impossible to go to posts pre may 15. this phase particularly drove people insane (luna and i were competing over who would lose the most followers, rory somehow was gaining followers). but yes basically we blogged exactly lik each other, tagging systems etc, spoke like each other (hashtag true bestiehood), and sent even more asks. the middle 2 pics are examples of such interactions after we finally switched back to the real us, making all the posts hilariously funny. one common mutual thought that was was going on was that we had logged into each other's accounts. another was like ahh i got you. x is pretending to be y and y is [etc etc], getting it all wrong and we were like ah yes! you got us! so true!. i think @thirteens-earring still hates us for may 16.... we were sending each other messages being like hi v this is rory! etc and v eventually figured out who was who but the whole time was sending us murderous threats + at one point luna was like hi rory this is v! to v, which was funny. anyway i think lizzie @dionysuswearsanorangetracksuit was the first one to catch on what was going on (like super early that day) and texted me and h about it but i made them promise they wouldn't explain to everyone what was going on.

everyone was like ah hahah ha hilarious right. you guys are done right. no really. you are done right. please please say you're done. and so, this is what we did after:

3. phase 3 prep: rory and luna collected the best posts through screenshots, i opened photoshop with a normal canvas size and started adding them and making the canvas bigger and bigger, ending up with a photoshop file of 16359x22200 pixels, it took me and rory 2 computers, 3 photoshop versions, and about 1 hour to export that as 4 pngs.

4. phase 3: on may 17 we changed all our blog titles to "phase 3", posted that image, and everyone was like hey guys. whats phase 3 whats going on pls explain. and to this day no one knows what phase 3 is <3 we will not say unless someone guesses

anyway if you've read all this thank you so much in indulging me and listening to me talk nonsense about friendship shenanigans (<- idk how to spell in english but i might have gotten it right). it was truly a wild time where rory was normal and luna and i were unhinged and drove rory into our unhingeness. i miss it incredibly and i wanna do more of that with you and them and all my little computer friends. or maybe we could jsut have a sleepover. idk but all i know is that if i knew you all in real life we would have the best laughs and the best times of our lifes and we'd just have so much fun. like if all of you bring this much joy in my life just by resharing the same posts as each other and replying to each other, imagine what it would feel like if we could all have a picnic or a roadtrip or just a day out at the mall even.... anyway this is getting sappy and i need to go to bed. ty for reading or sorry!!!!! now that we're friends i'll invite you next time we plan an international cyber-prank

Whumpee and the rest of the crew gathered around the table where their captain, Caretaker, and the sea witch, Whumper, sat discussing their terms.

“So, you want me to just give you the power of the wind and sea?” Whumper asked, shuffling cards.

“That’s about the size of it, yes,” Caretaker said.

“What would you possibly need that for?” Whumper asked with a bored sigh.

“Oh, the usual- pillage, plunder,” Caretaker lied.

Whumper cast them a steely look.

“Don’t try to deceive me, Caretaker,” Whumper warned, “what do you want the power for?”

Caretaker cast a glance at their crew and sighed.

“Is it so bad to say good old-fashioned revenge?” they asked, “even pirates have a code you know, and there’s one ship out there that isn’t following it.”

“Mm,” Whumper hummed, placing cards on the table, “and that affects you and your crew how exactly?”

Caretaker glanced at their crew- their family. Many of them bore wounds that didn’t come from the regular tussle with rival pirates. These were deeper, with harsher memories.

Whumper fixed Caretaker with a knowing gaze.

“I see,” Whumper said, “let’s see what we can do. We’ll need a vessel to wield the power. Not you, captain. Too much power is corrupting, even by our standards.”

Caretaker opened their mouth to speak, but Whumper pointed a long, bony finger at Whumpee.

“You,” they said, “you look like you’ve never wielded an ounce of power in your life.”

“Ha!” one of the crew laughed, “you haven’t seen Whumpee at cards then! Always playing the best hand, they are!”

“Nevertheless,” Whumper said, “come.”

Whumpee hesitantly stepped forward. They looked at Caretaker for any sign of what to do.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to-” Caretaker started.

“No,” Whumpee said, “I-I want to do it.”

Whumper grabbed them by the arm and took them into a secret room. Caretaker went to follow, but Whumper stopped them with a hand.

“A witch won’t reveal their spells for all to see, captain.”

Caretaker huffed, but stayed back.

They could hear chanting for several minutes, then blinding light followed by a scream. Caretaker cursed, rushing inside.

“Whumpee!”

Whumpee stared up at them with teary eyes. Their ears had grown webbed, and gills made deep marks in their neck. Most alarmingly, however, was that their lower half had been replaced with a fish’s tail.

“I have given them the power of the wind and sea,” Whumper grinned, “in the form of a mer.”

“For the love of- change them back!” Caretaker roared, “this wasn’t the deal!”

“Wasn’t it?” Whumper smiled, “it was you who failed to specify how you wanted the power.”

Whumper whistled, and a crew of rival pirates- the very ones that they had been seeking revenge against, came flooding into the room. In seconds, Caretaker’s entire crew was surrounded. One of them threw a net over Whumpee.

“What in Poseidon’s name are you doing!?”

“My payment, of course,” Whumper said, “we hadn’t discussed it, but I think mer scales will make a fine fee.”

“Caretaker!?” Whumpee cried.

Caretaker stepped forward, but the rival captain yanked them back, holding a sword to their throat.

“Mustn’t go back on your deal, Caretaker,” they said with false sweetness.

Caretaker growled.

“What did the wretched witch promise you, then?”

“Simple. The power of the wind and sea. In exchange for Caretaker’s crew.”

Two pirates hauled Whumpee off, writhing and shouting, while Caretaker’s hands were wrenched behind their back and secured together with rope. Whumper blew a puff of purple smoke in their face, and their world went dark.

Hi! I’m an artist and due to where I live I don’t have access to most platforms like bigcartel, redbubble etc., for some odd reason Ko-fi is available, do u recommend it?

Honestly yes I would! As far as storefront platforms for artists go, Ko-Fi seems to not care the least about creators; I'm not going to go as far as to say they care, since at the end of the day they are a business, but they aren't quite so transparently taking advantage of their users compared to Etsy, Patreon, etc.

One thing you'll have to keep in mind though is that Ko-Fi is not a print-on-demand service like the other platforms you listed. BigCartel, Redbubble, etc. manufacture and ship products for you using your designs, and you get a small percentage of the profits. It's not much, but that's the tradeoff for not having to pay any overhead or deal with shipping & handling, returns, etc.

Ko-Fi is essentially just a cash register. It allows you to accept money, whether that's in the form of a donation or in return for goods/services. If you use Ko-Fi as a store, it's up to YOU to manufacture and ship the goods or services.

Both platform types have their pros and cons, but I wouldn't really say you could compare them. If Ko-Fi is the only storefront available in your country then I definitely recommend it, but you'll have to be mindful how you use it. If you're new and you aren't ready to handle shipping out physical merch yet, Ko-Fi is good for selling digital goods - graphics like phone lockscreens or Discord emotes, very straight-forward "YCH"-style commissions, PDFs, etc. You could consider bundling some high-quality versions of your art together into a single digital "zine" or sketchbook and making that a pay-what-you-want digital product. But digital or physical, whatever you sell via Ko-Fi will have to be a product you manufacture yourself.

Hello tender lumplings.

Well I'll get the 'quiet' part out of the way. In spite of what a few naysayers may say, this blog is still a Nightmare Before Christmas fan comic blog, despite it's recent up-tick in fundraisers you're seeing. It is STILL going to be open. It is DEFINITELY going to have comics. So why all the donations? Besides the moral reasons of me wanting to get the word out and help save innocent people's lives, I think some people are under the impression that, when this blog's in it's 'inactive' periods; Late Jan - August, it just is tnbc themed only. That's....not what I ever intended for it.

I generally try and make it a place to promote myself, my friends, important campaigns and more. TNBC and Burtoneseque/Selickism musings are a give-in, but I want to try and help out myself and fellows artists and bloggers. My blog is followed by some wonderful people and a lot of fellow TNBC-ish mutuals who like the same things I like. I want to get them their traction to. I support who I want and, yes, I'm open to @s far and wide from smaller blogs wanting some eyes on their work, not just dire campaigns. As for the blog itself, for one, YES I'm going to still be reblogging and sharing updates on Palestine fundraisers throughout September - November. If that's awkward amidst my kooky comic updates than that's on me. Keep in mind I myself am not a vetter-organizer or officially affiliated with any organizations that help people in Gaza. I follow resources (namely @90-ghost, @el-shab-hussein and others) made by blogs who are better than me at this and try to get those stories out. My own financial situation is all fraught right now, so I'm out of donation-money I set aside for month. But again, that's why I'm doing with the reblogs.

As for comic news:

This blog and my original characters @odditiesnoctobermidnightroad are both turning TEN YEARS OLD this year. Ten years. That means three years left to make all the comics I've wanted to make for this blog, but also that this particular year is going to be something special and something I hope to have out sooner than later as it will be going on till Halloween Day (thurs Oct 31st)!!

The 'Halloween Mailbox' will not be open this year for Halloween itself on account of how much time the new comic will take, but things will settle down in time for Xmas, where I hope to have a bit creative fun with the mailbox.

Anyway, you're getting updates on that AND my "Mouse the Witching Cat" 2024 rerelease news. Hoping to launch a few more sellables on Redbubble, Etsy and InDeed.com this year!

Now, what will the comic be about? Well... all I'll say is there will be a crossover element to it with another Tim Burton-property but I won't say what...

Okay incoming text post from the mun. You know it’s serious because I’m not using parentheses lol. Before people get worried, no; Aftermath is not cancelled, I am not in dire financial straits or harm, and I am fine. I just really wanted to be honest with people about something.

I’m not sure, with how my neurodivergency affects me, if I’ll be able to juggle school and a job in the future. To quell any worries, no Aftermath isn’t going to be for profit or behind a paywall. This is a passion project, I did not go into askblogs to make money lol. With all that stuff possibly, it’d be hard to juggle Aftermath, my responsibilities, and also my webcomic.

So in essence, if anyone here would like a commission, feel free to ask me for one. Later I’ll update this post with my comm prices. Yes I will even draw your blorbo smooching PAMA because you obviously want that /lhj okay but seriously, besides the commission I’ll probably keep up the redbubble shop and maybe add a ko-fi link so people can tip me if they want. Maybe for a dollar I’ll give you a quick sketch of whatever you want as thanks. Give me feedback on that, honestly. Maybe I could open up a patreon since I have some ideas for tie-in works for Aftermath? Aftermath doesn’t work with the typical patreon format so don’t worry about me putting it behind a patreon wall. Maybe I can put a tier so people can get guaranteed cameos in it? I’m also planning on making a patreon for my webcomic in the future, which will be separate. I could also maybe do some behind the scenes stuff for Aftermath there?

Yes! I am planning to add the pumpkin dino to Redbubble! I've just refined the shading a bit, and I want to add a bit more of a background before I put it up there.

I'm also going to include it in a Halloween dinosaur sticker set I'm working on! I've got 8 dinos planned for that, and am sketching out the second one right now. I'm not sure when they'll be up, but hopefully before the weekend is over, if I manage to focus until they're all done.

Honestly I kind of hate the dinochef now, it's from before I had a tablet and looks nothing like my current style, so I think I'll just draw a new dinochef.

And thank you! I'm still not sure if it was the plague or not, since rapid tests are unreliable and I'm not in any of the eligible groups to get Properly Tested in this province. Whatever it was, I'm still a teeny bit stuffy, but I feel fine! And my sense of smell seems to be a bit less messed up than it was a few days ago.

Ya know, I was actually thinking about this myself! I was going to take suggestions for sticker ideas to put on Redbubble as a sort of "500 followers celebration", but since you're asking, I might as well go for it now!
