In the yogic culture, Shiva is not known as a god, but as the Adiyogi or the first yogi – the originator of yoga. He was the one who first put this seed into the human mind. According to the yogic lore, over fifteen thousand years ago, Shiva attained to his full enlightenment and abandoned himself in an intense ecstatic dance upon the Himalayas. When his ecstasy allowed him some movement, he danced wildly. When it became beyond movement, he became utterly still.

I am sure that I suffered minor injuries in my twenties, but I honestly cannot remember a single one. Then one day I screwed up my shoulder in the gym. I was 31 years old. I could not lift heavy for several weeks, so I decided to try a yoga class at the gym. My first class was with @rona_graceblu. In hindsight, I am extremely fortunate to have started yoga with Rona. Her classes were accessible, challenging, and fun. Her instructions were very clear and made sense to me. I loved her classes. When Rona quit teaching at the gym and shifted her classes to a local yoga studio, I followed her. I practiced with her for a long time. I don’t believe that she teaches yoga today. She is busy with family, travels, and her business (@graceblu). But I will never forget Rona. I am so grateful for her teaching, which inspired a lifetime of practice and eventually teaching for me too. . It would have been nice to start doing yoga in my twenties or even earlier. But I really don’t think I was ready for it. In my twenties, my body could recover from just about anything and everything that I put it through. I didn’t have a ton of stress. I didn’t worry about the future. Although I would have benefitted from the practice, I didn’t think I needed yoga. It seemed unnecessary at the time. Now I know better but I have no regrets. I am glad I started when I did. Today, yoga is very important for my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I need it. I love it. I love practicing and teaching yoga. I plan to do both for a very long time. After all, I really just started doing yoga. That first class with Rona was only 18 years ago! . Thanks to @supermomtraci and @renee_xtina for the tag. Let’s see some more numbers and hear some more stories from @ej_merlin @yogamarks @chimonster78 @touch_of_yoga . #asanajunkie #beginneryoga #crazysexyyoga #energy #feeltheyogahigh #fitspo #healthyyogi #igyoga #inspired #inversion #headstand #mensyoga #myyogajourney #myyogalife #practiceyoga #practicedaily #spreadtheyogalove #yogastory #yogafit #yogajourney (at Burbank, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvAJ1ttB4kN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1fej8fkgdiujv

A lot changed in the last two years to lead to this #TransformationTuesday, my legs are thicker and it’s because I am eating healthier and doing more legwork. A change in mindset is what led to the shift to be develop a dedicated yoga practice. I spend more time with myself- Dedicated to yoga and self care. Bigger emphasis on accountability. Earlier mornings for yoga, affirmations, meditations and tea. Standing up for my inner peace. Letting go of the bad habits, bad vibes- Making space to chase my happiness and my highs. A yoga journey is a total transformation of body and mind. . . #thickthighssavelives #YogaStory #YogaJourney #YogaWitch #Yogini #HigherVibrations #NewParadigm #splits #WildWomen

Teaching yoga is one of the greatest opportunities to come alongside anyone, whether they are looking to feel more comfortable in their own skin and build confidence, or looking to find ease within an injured body and find ease, regardless it is a tried and true tool that can promote wholeness and healing in any breathing body. The possibility exists that we could then grow in our discovery of how alieviating ourselves regularly from our thoughts can remove stress, which is the greatest known trigger leading us toward breakdown and dis-ease.  This stillness in the mind and body allows for a deepened connection to the truest nature of the individual. To connect and live out of this place would mean that we are much more likely to find meaning and live out our life's purpose.   #rewriteyourhardware #bentonville #yogastory #thoughtsbecomethings #mindfulness #movement #yoga #malasana #yogateacher #infinitelove #mindovermatter #innerpeace #happiness #selfless #elevate #liveauthentic #higherself #unique #beyou #arkansas #inspiration #motivation #friends #treepose (at Bentonville, Arkansas)

The Story Behind Rosa Parks and Yoga
Tumblr media
How a Georgia State University Professor uncovered pictures of the iconic civil rights activist practicing asana. Photos of Rosa Parks practicing yoga have been circulating on social media over the past several months. In one of the images dated March 1973, Parks can be seen practicing Dhanurasana, or Bow Pose, using a blanket beneath her as a yoga mat. These images, from the Library of Congress (LoC), highlight a more intimate side of Parks outside of her work as a civil rights activist, and they tell a story about how, for Parks and other black movement workers, wellness and yoga can be radical acts of liberation. “Rosa Parks practicing yoga at an event.” 1973 March. Image courtesy of Library of Congress, Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, Visual Materials from the Rosa Parks Papers, . Photo used with permission of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development. While the photos of Parks have been on display to the public at the Library of Congress in Washington DC since last December, earlier accounts of the photos circulating the web date back to a June 2019 article published by Stephanie Y. Evans, PhD, a professor and the director of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University. Part of Evans’ work focuses on researching the intellectual history of black women, specifically as it is told in autobiographies and memoirs. “My current research examines what I call ‘historical wellness,’ which is how elder black women write about self-care,” said Evans, the author of Black Women in the Ivory Tower, 1850-1954: An Intellectual History. “I have surveyed 200 black women’s life narratives and found 50 references to yoga. One reference was from Sheila McCauley, the niece of Rosa Parks. McCauley wrote about yoga as a family practice and about Mrs. Parks as an avid yogini.” Our Auntie Rosa, McCauley’s family memoir, co-authored with Eddie Allen, details how Rosa Parks attended yoga classes with both her niece and nephew, beginning as early as the 1960s. “The memoir reference led me to the archives to find primary sources, which is where I found the one of the LoC pictures,” says Evans. A second images was released later. “The images show Mrs. Parks sharing her yoga practice publicly a month after she turned 60." See also Jana Long Shares Why It's Never Too Late to Start Yoga
Yoga as Self-Care
The LoC pictures led Evans to Rosa Parks: My Story, in which Parks details how she learned daily stretching from her mother as a child. Evans also learned of Parks’ many health challenges and the stress of being a target for her activism work as other motivating factors for incorporating yoga and meditation into her wellness practice. “What Mrs. Parks teaches us is that self-care is part of resistance—she lived to the age of 92 because she began to center her own health needs, even as she continued with lifelong activism in Detroit and beyond,” said Evans, who herself earned her 200-hour certification in Kemetic Yoga from Yirser Ra Hotep in 2017. Evans has also created Black women’s yoga history, a resource that highlights contributions to yoga from the Diaspora. For Evans, the photos aren’t just about highlighting a different side of Parks: “Self-care is too often discussed as selfish. I wanted to share the photos to underscore self-care as a black women’s public health imperative. I see meditation and yoga as helpful factors in race, gender, activism, and the sustainable struggle for human rights. Mrs. Parks is part of a larger story of black women’s sustainable self-care and stress management.” See also "Wellness is a Civil Right"
How Pictures of Rosa Parks Doing Yoga Went Viral
“I spent two solid weeks getting permission to share what I discovered from the Library of Congress, as well as the Rosa Parks estate representative and the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development,” Evans recounts. “I was careful to follow research ethics and protocol for obtaining the pictures, and was also mindful of sharing, out of respect for her legacy.” Evans says she then shared the photos in an article for her professional organization, the Associate of Black Women Historians, which led her colleagues to share them with their networks. Communications Professor Sarah J. Jackson was one of the first to share the photos to her Twitter account, amassing over 18k likes on the social platform. From there, other large accounts and news sites continued to share the photos of Parks, creating a viral domino effect. You can view Evans' full portfolio online at professorevans.net and find her on Twitter and Instagram. #YogaStory from a super yoga momma @layogini:⠀ A sleepless night of breastfeeding and trying to get an 8 month old to sleep is a common site for a woman. You still have to wake up early, feed baby again, change diapers, go to work, OM with your students as though your soul always hums in peace...but it gets hard. My body felt stiff today, my Uttanasana rusty, my Chaturanga weak, my c-section still feel swollen and itchy, my baby bump seems to be here to stay. Perfect? Hell, NO. Nevertheless it's still my practice, it's still my Sun Salutation, it's still my yoga, it's still me behind all this 💖⠀ OWN YOUR YOGA!⠀ Live your passion with @ankhyogahouse ⠀ You don't need to become a yoga teacher to take our teacher training... you can take it just for fun! Story behind: While in holidays with my family in a rainy and bit chilly day we walked across this beautiful corner and I thought 🤔 💭“This is a cute spot for a yoga pose for IG” I knew I hadn’t stretched and my body wasn’t warmed up, but I am always feeling the pressure to be more active in my social media (not really my thing). So I went for it and ⚡️🤯 a strong pain cramp-wise in my hip flexor area. I right away stopped and made sure I wasn’t hurt badly. Luckily wasn’t serios but I had pain even days after. So many emotions arrived: fear of being injured and consequences of it; anger with myself because I know better! I always tell my student to listen to their body and I didn’t; and also sadness to see how sometimes it’s only a spectacular pose that gets more attention than the beauty of a basic stretching and simple but powerful alignment. What I want to learn is to always give priority to myself (mind, body and convictions) instead of the urge to post something in this crazy Instagram world. It is what it is and I adapt and learn but ☝🏼 staying true to what I feel (physically, emotionally and mentally). . . . . . #storyoftheday #yogastories #instayoga #yujyogabykarina #yogaretreat #yogainstructor #dubaiyoga #yogaaroundtheworld #notaninstagrammodel #yoga365 #yogaeverywhere #yogaeverydamnday #poseoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/B0gvNJuor04/?igshid=t3jkjsnofhqe

I often teach a sequencing of one leg balancing poses and tell a little story with the pose. The story starts with a tree (pose) high upon a mountain top, in the light of the setting sun. An eagle (pose) lands on the tree, perching itself on top, so that it can see far and wide. It eventually spots its prey far below, a fish in the lake by the mountain. The eagle spreads its wings (the modified warrior 3 shape) and swoops down upon its prey. As the sun sets, the eagle is still in flight and turns to one side, twisting around the back side of the half moon (pose). Then we take the sequence in reverse back through the flying eagle shape, landing in eagle pose, and ending the story where it started in tree pose. I invite you to try the sequence sometime and remember my little story! In one way or another, every shape tells a story. May we continue to share those stories! ... #strikeashape - Day 4 - #onelegbalance #warrior3 #flyingeagle #wings ... Co-hosts: @frog_queenyoga @yoga_garage @kelse_ann ... My Yoga Story
After just two weeks of Evolation Yoga Teacher Training, I’ve found myself repeatedly arriving at a much different baseline state of being. I’ve noticed that it has been difficult to define this baseline state in my mind…maybe because it’s still novel. I have not yet taken the time to put it into words. Perhaps now would be a good time to try. Not so much to define it for definition sake, but more so to make note of an internal transformation that’s occurring. Also, to celebrate and welcome its existence!
My expectations going into Evolation’s yoga immersion program were fairly broad. I expected to learn A LOT, meet inspirational people, and most likely be super tired all the time. I was excited for the knowledge, excited for the people, but nervous for the impact it was going to have on my life as a whole. To the reader (hi there!), these expectations may seem normal enough. Of course, nerves come with change and with the thought of being vulnerable in a group of strangers. Prior to beginning the training, I did not place much thought on the messages I received from the Evolation Team- that it was going to be a “life changing experience”. If anything, I brushed those messages aside due to their vastness. Life changing? If you want to make a human’s heart rate escalate quickly just say “it will be life changing”. That statement is bound to result in the precipitation of any and all coping mechanisms one could muster. My coping mechanism was to dismiss and move forward. Generally, I’ve noticed that if something seems too large for me to process, I veer towards not processing it at all and instead let it bubble up in mindless moments of anxiousness.
With that said, here I am…processing a life changing experience. That in itself speaks to the internal transformation I have encountered and am still experiencing. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly), this perceivably individual transformation takes place BECAUSE of the community of people I have immersed myself in. To describe these brilliant people as “strangers” already seemed foreign and inaccurate to me following the first few days of training. After two weeks I’ve come to believe that the strength and energy of a group is a phenomenon that is only watered down when attempted to describe in mere words. Thus, forgive me for this two dimensional account. What I am certain of is that my reduction in anxiety and depressive cognitions is a direct result of this yoga community. What is even more uplifting, is that I feel empowered and confident in my abilities to continue this baseline state of being beyond my teacher training experience.
In honor of simplicity, my teacher training group has served my soul.
Here is what I have received from them (so far): o I can be BIG; I can be brave. o I know that communication is more than the physical…much more. o I can be still. I can be still AND at peace. o Being messy and sucking is totally a thing that happens over and over again. If you learn from it and truly forgive yourself, you’ve expanded. o Opposing energies can be utilized effectively and deserve exploration. o There is balance to be found. o I am smarter as a whole. I am smarter as a group. o We all care about something. Therefore, we all care. o If it’s described as “life changing”, it will probably be a useful and valuable experience beyond words. No anxiety needed.
Namaste.

When I started going to #yoga classes I had no idea how far it would go. Now, when I started going to classes is not when I started paying attention to #yoga but it was in public classes when I became hooked, so to speak. All of a sudden a thread was emerging- one new but also very very familiar. But still, even with that- I was there to work away the crazy- at the time I'm not sure how aware I was of that exact thing but I DO know as soon as I found someone & somewhere to practice I did the crazy thing of re-arrange my schedule to make absolutely sure I had no excuse on those evenings. I also went at the crack of dawn to a completely different style of practice. Crack of dawn morning classes however eventually turned into desk shifts at yoga tree after doing work trade there for quite some time opening the doors for Clayton's Mysore practices... #yogastory #yoga #backbend #fitnessmotivation #yogavideo #yogafit #trust #motivation #love #yogalove (at Yoga Flow SF)
