Digimon Adventure 02 Appreciation Challenge - Day 4

Day 4: A 02 musical piece that makes you feel every time it plays

Definitely Bokura no Digital World.

I didn’t want to pick something too obvious but then I realized I have no choice. The first few notes of this songs are enough to form a lump in my throat, and the further it goes the closer I am to bawling.

It’s so sentimental, with all the kids and all their Digimon coming together to say thank you and sing about how meeting each other and adventuring in the Digital World made them the people they are today, after a total of 104 episodes in the world of Adventure. Add Wada Kouji (especially after 2016, RIP you beautiful human being), add AiM, add Hirata Hiroaki the intrepid narrator, and everything just comes together into something beautiful.

I listened to Japanese Digimon songs long before I got to watch the series in Japanese in full. Now that I have full access to the Japanese version, I can say Bokura no Digital World is even more powerful with the context of the scenes it was inserted in during episode 50. The Chosen Children of the world coming together to shine a light and save the two worlds, and then Oikawa’s sacrifice... Excuse me while I’m crying inconsolably for the next ten minutes.

Masterfully done. Truly.

Very honorable mentions go to Target ~Akai Shougeki~, the best opening song in the franchise (with apologies to Butterfly); Oretachi no Melody, Yamato and Gabumon’s duet; Mirai e no Message, Iori and Armadimon’s (one woman) duet; Reach for you, Daisuke’s song from the Natsu e no Tobira CD drama, which is oddly sentimental for him yet fits so well; Kimi ga Yume Mita Mirai, Boku ga Yume Mita Mirai, Wormmon’s image song, which is heartwrenching to listen to even if you don’t understand the absolutely heartbreaking lyrics; Yogiru Fuan, which I really think is one of Arisawa Takanori’s best compositions; and Only One, Ken’s image song, which has the distinction of being the first Japanese song I ever memorized and absolutely slaps.

The Digimon Adventure 02 Appreciation Challenge: Days 3+4+5

(i'm a little behind so i'm grouping these together if that's okay)

Day 3: A digimon from 02 that you would want as your partner

In terms of like a particular individual digimon, maybe Wormmon? The loyalty and dedication he has to Ken, not to mention that absolute love. it’d be amazing to have someone who loves you like that and is so invested in you. he’s very patient and understanding with Ken when Ken’s still struggling in the aftermath of everything, not wanting to push him.

In terms of like a type of digimon, then I'm not sure. Maybe Gotsumon? I'm a little partial to Gotsumons.

[This doesn't take in to account my general Patamon bias.]

Day 4: An 02 musical piece that makes you feel every time it plays.

This is a tough one because there are so many good ones?? even not including songs that played in 02 that originated in the first season, there are a lot.

Special mention to Ie ni Kaeru ~Target Instruments~ [Let's Go Home] and Sorosoro Yuuhan Da Ne [It's About Time for Supper, (Isn’t It)?] for evoking the feeling of being like a Professor Layton credit song.

Um, there's Yogiru Fuan [Drifting/Sweeping/Passing Anxiety], Anku no Butai Ga Yatte Kita [Forces of Evil/Evil Forces Have Arrived], Ankoku no Hoheomi ~Digimon Kaiser no Theme~ [Smile of Darkness ~Digimon Kaiser’s Theme~], and Gekitotsu!! [Clash!!], with I think Anku no Butai ga Yatte Kita and Gekitotsu!! tied ahead of the others. It's not that they're particularly especialyl emotional, but they're just so snazzy and stuff and for whatever reason that makes me feel. Everytime those two tracks play I'm on high alert and absolutely loving it. but like also Break Up gets me feeling a certain way just with the ‘na na na’s in the beginning so that’s also in the lead.

(also I just kind of realized that  Yogiru Fuan, Ankoku no Hoheomi, and Gekitotsu!! share like a motif or something which is neat.)

But if we're including musical pieces not in the show, like character songs, then Steppin' Out (Takeru+Patamon) takes the cake. I don't know how to describe it but the feeling that songs give me whenever I listen to it?????????? it just does things to me.

It's sort of a three-way tie between Ep19 (The Synthetic Demon Beast, Kimeramon), Ep34 (Protect the Holy Point), and Ep35 (Assault! BlackWarGreymon) -- the latter two maybe pushing ahead of Ep19 a little bit because I'm slightly more likely to watch the entire episodes without skipping bits.

As you can guess, my Takeru bias is showing again, heh.

but seriously, I love these episodes so much. there's such good content for Takeru's character in them, which makes me love them. I'd go more in depth to why I love them so much, but I'm kind of tired and it would be pretty long so I'll maybe save that for another day -- although I've already written a bit about Ep34&35 a little while ago.

but the scene where Takeru sees Devimon again and flashes back to the first season, with the narrator (adult Takeru) narrating and then 02!Takeru like narrating/inner monologuing(?) about how he felt back then... it is such a good scene and not talked about enough imo it’s just so well done to me?? that emotional flashback. like the way he is frozen and aaaah it’s so good!!! there’s a lot of good Takeru content in Ep19 but I just wanted to take time to highlight this underappreciated moment.

There’s actually like 3 youtube uploads for this, so I guess it’s pretty noticeable, that is just the power they emit when they combine forces. Overall really good track, kind of a weird choice of intonation in the next to last verse that’s a little bit awkward but it works I guess. The song also has this ominous chanting going on throughout the song, and it actually works really well (unlike in a certain other song) and basically: it’s fucking good.
