109 years ago today, leo frank, an innocent american jewish man, was lynched.
Tumblr media
in 1913, leo frank was arrested for the murder of mary phagan. despite evidence that he was at home at the time of the murder, the jury decided in just four hours that he was guilty and the judge sentenced him to death. all of frank's appeals were rejected. protests erupted outside the governor's mansion when the governor decided to commute frank's sentence from death to life imprisonment, and on august 17th, 1915, a group of 25 men kidnapped frank from the prison hospital where he was recovering from an attempt on his life, drove him 100 miles to mary phagan's hometown, and lynched him. there are several photos of the lynching.
though frank is the only known jewish victim of lynching in america, antisemitism was baked into the nation's history in numerous other ways. during the trial, the prosecuting attorney framed him as a sexual pervert who was both a homosexual and preyed on young girls. this is not the first time a jewish man has been framed as a sexual predatory because of his jewishness. it was simply the culmination of centuries of antisemitism that still persists to this day. (content warning for antisemitic caricatures and one graphic photo of the lynching of leo frank)
leo frank was proven innocent after his death, though many people still insist he was guilty, particularly white supremacists.
a musical called parade about the trial and tragic death of leo frank was written by jewish composer jason robert brown and jewish playwright alfred uhry. it premiered in 1988 and was revived in 2023 on broadway, starring jewish actors ben platt and micaela diamond, where neo nazis protested outside the theatre, claiming the show was "glorifying a pedophile."
as of writing this, tomorrow is the first day of elul, the last month in the jewish calendar culminating in the high holy days, the holiest days of the jewish year. every year, synagogues see an increase in negative attention and antisemitism from their wider communities. we start to receive more hostile phone calls and emails, threats of violence, and this year there was a swatting campaign targeting at least 26 jewish institutions. we are supposed to be using this time to reflect and make amends with the people we've hurt, and instead so much of our time and energy had to go toward ensuring we can even safely walk into our communal spaces.
i don't have the answer for how to fix this or what you as a gentile should do. antisemitism is thousands of years old, and it's not going to stop because some well meaning people on tumblr read all the articles linked in this post. all i know is that jews all over the world are terrified and so, so tired.

The Octopus
Dr. Octopus sona
"Mo" Octavius - The Octopus - Hero - Earth 9639
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end I decided to make a Dr Octopus instead of Spider-man and the result turned out to be the winner, she is incredible and at the same time she is very me, she is what I would like to be in a few years, but with superpowers and she is perfect. I even encouraged myself to make a reference to her actuators.
The how I came to try a Doctor Octopus sona is very really long story, so if you want to read it or read some headcanon about Mo, click on "keep reading".
I will also answer questions about her
Feel free to ask!
Where did the "Octopus" idea come from?
My dream in life was to become a paleontologist, but unfortunately where I live that is not possible, geologically speaking, my land is very young and there are no fossil remains, so I could not study here and the truth is that I love more my family and my land than my dream of studying extinct creatures, I will not go study far away.
I was talking with an old classmate about what other specialty I could choose and she told me that she had always believed that I would end up as a marine biologist, I asked her why and she told me that it was the impression she got on the visit to the "oceanographic".
Apparently, on a trip we made to the Oceanographic Institute, she heard me giving fun facts about octopus, squid and cuttlefish; I have always been fascinated by cephalopods and since at that very moment they were studying the life cycle of octopuses in the laboratories that they showed us, I was a little excited; and then there was an incident with an octopus… What a day... really, but when I remembered it, I kept thinking.
Two days later there was the first Spider-man film from 2002 on TV and I saw the beginning, when they arrived at the laboratory where the spiders were and it reminded me so much of the excursion I had been talking about the other day with my partner, so much, that I couldn't avoid thinking:
“Radioactive spider + nerd = Spider-man
Radioactive octopus + nerd = Octopus-woman?”
And then I remembered Dr. Octopus and thought "Why not?"
It started as a bit of a joke, as if on that excursion I had been bitten by a radioactive octopus and had become a superhero with octopus powers. I took all my knowledge about cephalopods, I designed the outfit inspired by my own clothes, I thought about what things I could make a superhero where I live and when I wanted to realize it, I had created Mo Octavius, my Dr. Octopus sona, one of the characters I've created that I like the most, even though I hate drawing humans.
It has undergone some modifications since the beginning, especially in its background and powers, but it is now ready to go out into the world.
Headcanon:
No, she actially wasn't bitten by a radioactive octopus. Instead, some chemicals fell on her, mutagenic risk products containing DNA fragments from cephalopod for hybridization, belonging to a project to create transgenic octopuses for commercial purposes. (I hope I can elaborate on this a bit more, I find it very interesting)
Her mother and sister are alive, but they live very far from where she studies, so she stays with her uncles, Otto and Rossy. Her uncle, Otto Octavius, is the true inventor of the actuators she uses.
She has two names, Micaela Ophelia, but she doesn't like either of them, so she prefers to be called Mo, after the initials, M.O.
In Spanish, two surnames are used, the father's first and the mother's second, but since Mo never met his father, she usually uses only her mother's surname, Octavius. (She lives in a part of Spain)
She is the superhero in charge of protecting the city where she lives, and why not Spider-man? Because the Peter Parker of her dimension purposely modified a spider, imitating what happened with Mo, to also obtain powers, but it went wrong, the spider's venom altered his brain chemistry and turned him evil and monstrous, a mutant spider-man who almost destroy the city. The biggest enemy of The Octopus.
Unlike most superheroes, especially Spider-man, for whom all the mutations they underwent were beneficial, she has also undergone some harmful changes, even for her health. (I will elaborate on this a bit more, later)

I'm listening to the Parade 2023 cast recording, and I just keep replaying one part of Leo At Work/What Am I Waiting For?, along with this one part of All the Wasted Time, and I just need to write about it, so this is going to be totally haphazard and very long. Here we go.
When Lucille goes:
How can he want me? / So plain, so prim / How can he be so sure?
Don't I wish I could be sure / Like him? / Like Leo / For Leo?
It sounds like:
how can he want me? / so PLAIN, so PRIM / HOW CAN HE BEEEE SO SUUUUURE????
DON'T I wish i could be sure / like him? / like LEOOOOO / for LEOOOOO?
BECAUSE. At this point in the musical, Lucille is a young woman who has not experienced the world. Neither its treasures nor its horrors. What is she waiting for? SHE'S WAITING TO BE SURE. OF HERSELF. Not only for Leo, but WITH Leo.
Leo sings interspersed:
Yes, Lucille / I am building a life for us.
No, Lucille / We cannot have a picnic.
And it sounds like:
Yes, LUCILLE / I am BUILDING a life for us
No, LUCILLE / We CANNOT have a PICNIC
BECAUSE. At this point in the musical, Leo is deeply unhappy and unfulfilled. Unfortunately, his story turns tragic. But these lines here are reflected back somewhat in All the Wasted Time, as:
Just look at you / How can I not be in love with you?
And Ben makes that sound like:
Just look at YOU / How CAN I NOT be in love with YOU?
Thus echoing some of Leo's earlier frustrations as being answered. Not only for Lucille but WITH Lucille. And in the same song, she sings:
Now look at me / Now that you're finally here with me /
Now I know I was right to wait / And everyone else was so wrong /
For so long.
And Micaela makes it sound like:
Now LOOK AT ME / Now that YOU'RE FIIIINALLY HERE with ME /
Now I know I WAS RIGHT TO WAIT / And EVERYONE ELSE WAS SOOOO WRONG /
For SO LOOOOONG.
BECAUSE.
THESE SONGS MIRROR EACH OTHER. THESE ACTORS LEAN INTO THE MIRRORING.
AND I LOVE IT. SO MUCH.
So, this was my little petition for Ben and Micaela to work together forever. Thank you and good night.

Soprano Pauline Donalda Speaks About Her Recordings (1960s?) Pauline Donalda (1882–1970), Canadian soprano, and tireless promoter of Canadian opera, teacher, administrator. Donalda was born Pauline Lightstone in Montreal into a Jewishly active East European immigrant home. As a child she attracted attention for the quality of her voice and studied music on scholarship at the Royal Victoria College. In 1902 she went to Paris on a grant from Donald Smith (Lord Strathcona), after whom she adopted the professional surname of Donalda. She made her London debut at Covent Garden in 1905 singing Micaela under the direction of Andre Messager, her Canadian debut in 1906 singing with her husband (Paul Seveilhac) in the Montreal Arena, and her New York debut later that same year in Faust. In the spring of 1910 Donalda opened the Covent Garden season and returned in 1912 singing in both Les Huguenots and I Pagliacci, again with her husband. She was about to leave Canada for a European tour when World War i broke out. She remained in Canada, often giving benefit concerts in support of the war effort. In 1917 she returned to Paris, where she sang in Balfe's Le Talisman, sharing the stage with her new husband, Mischa Leon (b. Haurowitz). Pauline Donalda's parents were Jews from Poland and Russia who immigrated to Montreal, changing the family name from Lichtenstein to Lightstone. The quality of Pauline's voice attracted attention, and she was awarded a music scholarship at the Royal Victoria College. When Sir Donald Smith, Lord Strathcona, gave Pauline a grant to study in Europe, she adopted the name "Donalda" in his honor. After her London debut in 1905, she sang frequently, often when Nellie Melba required a replacement (in this way, Donalda sang Mimi with Caruso). She married the French baritone, Paul Seveilhac, a cast member in the 1905 production of Faust in which Donalda sang Marguerite. She toured Russia, North America, and Europe. In February 1914, she had a huge success in Carmen in Nice.
During World War I, Donalda stayed in Canada where she organized the Donalda Sunday Afternoon Concerts. When the war ended, she returned to Paris where she married the Danish tenor Mischa Léon in 1918, after a divorce from her first husband. Subsequent to retiring from the stage, she opened a teaching studio in 1922 and taught hundreds of pupils. Donalda continued her teaching career in Montreal in 1937 and founded the Opera Guild (1942) over which she presided until 1969; the guild presented 29 operas during this time. Although her performing career was relatively short, Donalda had a great impact in the musical world as a teacher and promoter of opera. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1967 for her contributions to music.
In 1922 Donalda left the stage to devote her life to teaching, opening a studio in Paris. She returned to Montreal in 1937, where she opened a studio, and in 1942 founded the Opera Guild, the company she directed until 1969. During her relatively short performing career, Donalda was recognized for the purity of her voice and for her musicality, fine diction, and powerful stage presence. She is remembered for the unfailing energy with which she promoted opera in Montreal and encouraged talented young Canadian singers. Donalda also was very active in support of Jewish music in Montreal and the study of music at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

James Webb telescope reveals Milky Way-like galaxies in young universe New images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal for the first time galaxies with stellar bars — elongated features of stars stretching from the centers of galaxies into their outer disks — at a time when the universe was a mere 25% of its present age. The finding of so-called barred galaxies, similar to our Milky Way, this early in the universe will require astrophysicists to refine their theories of galaxy evolution. Prior to JWST, images from the Hubble Space Telescope had never detected bars at such young epochs. In a Hubble image, one galaxy, EGS-23205, is little more than a disk-shaped smudge, but in the corresponding JWST image taken this past summer, it’s a beautiful spiral galaxy with a clear stellar bar. “I took one look at these data, and I said, ‘We are dropping everything else!’” said Shardha Jogee, professor of astronomy at The University of Texas at Austin. “The bars hardly visible in Hubble data just popped out in the JWST image, showing the tremendous power of JWST to see the underlying structure in galaxies,” she said, describing data from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS), led by UT Austin professor, Steven Finkelstein. The team identified another barred galaxy, EGS-24268, also from about 11 billion years ago, which makes two barred galaxies existing farther back in time than any previously discovered. In an article accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, they highlight these two galaxies and show examples of four other barred galaxies from more than 8 billion years ago. “For this study, we are looking at a new regime where no one had used this kind of data or done this kind of quantitative analysis before,” said Yuchen “Kay” Guo, a graduate student who led the analysis, “so everything is new. It’s like going into a forest that nobody has ever gone into.” Bars play an important role in galaxy evolution by funneling gas into the central regions, boosting star formation. “Bars solve the supply chain problem in galaxies,” Jogee said. “Just like we need to bring raw material from the harbor to inland factories that make new products, a bar powerfully transports gas into the central region where the gas is rapidly converted into new stars at a rate typically 10 to 100 times faster than in the rest of the galaxy.” Bars also help to grow supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies by channeling the gas part of the way. The discovery of bars during such early epochs shakes up galaxy evolution scenarios in several ways. “This discovery of early bars means galaxy evolution models now have a new pathway via bars to accelerate the production of new stars at early epochs,” Jogee said. And the very existence of these early bars challenges theoretical models as they need to get the galaxy physics right in order to predict the correct abundance of bars. The team will be testing different models in their next papers. JWST can unveil structures in distant galaxies better than Hubble for two reasons: First, its larger mirror gives it more light-gathering ability, allowing it to see farther and with higher resolution. Second, it can see through dust better as it observes at longer infrared wavelengths than Hubble. Undergraduate students Eden Wise and Zilei Chen played a key role in the research by visually reviewing hundreds of galaxies, searching for those that appeared to have bars, which helped narrow the list to a few dozen for the other researchers to analyze with a more intensive mathematical approach. Other co-authors from UT Austin are Steven Finkelstein, Micaela Bagley and Maximilien Franco. Dozens of co-authors from other institutions hail from the U.S., the U.K., Japan, Spain, France, Italy, Australia and Israel. TOP IMAGE....The power of JWST to map galaxies at high resolution and at longer infrared wavelengths than Hubble allows it look through dust and unveil the underlying structure and mass of distant galaxies. This can be seen in these two images of the galaxy EGS23205, seen as it was about 11 billion years ago. In the HST image (left, taken in the near-infrared filter), the galaxy is little more than a disk-shaped smudge obscured by dust and impacted by the glare of young stars, but in the corresponding JWST mid-infrared image (taken this past summer), it’s a beautiful spiral galaxy with a clear stellar bar. CREDIT NASA/CEERS/University of Texas at Austin LOWER IMAGE....Montage of JWST images showing six example barred galaxies, two of which represent the highest lookback times quantitatively identified and characterized to date. The labels in the top left of each figure show the lookback time of each galaxy, ranging from 8.4 to 11 billion years ago (Gyr), when the universe was a mere 40% to 20% of its present age. The Murder of Micaela Constanzo
Tumblr media
Micaela Constanzo was a 16-year-old student from Nevada. Micaela was athletic and played fro the basketball team, she was close with her family and described as popular at school.
Micaela was last seen leaving her high school at 5pm, she planned to walk home that day. When Micaela failed to arrive home, her mother phoned her friends asking if they had seen her, when no one had, she called the police.
A huge search began, two days later Micaela’s body was found- she had been beaten and stabbed repeatedly on her face and neck. Investigators found texts from Micaela to Kody Patten, a fellow student and friend of Micaela’s, the time showed he had been texting her around the time she disappeared. CCTV also showed Micaela and Patten in the hallway together shortly before she had disappeared. Patten had also claimed that he had seen Micaela with her boyfriend in the front of the school, whereas everyone else had said she was at the back of the school.
Details of the two teenagers social lives began to emerge- Micaela and Patten had been friends since they were young children, Patten had been dating Toni Fratto. Fratto had expressed jealousy of Patten’s relationship with Micaela and had written in her diary that she believed Patten loved Micaela and would one day leave her for his childhood friend. Patten began to exploit this jealously and Fratto reacted by arguing with Micaela.
Patten was established as the primary suspect in Micaela’s murder, after being arrested he confessed to his involvement claiming he and Micaela had gone for a drive before arguing and then fighting. He stated he had then killed Micaela in self defence before hiding her body.
Fratto wrote to, and visited, Patten following his arrest. In April 2011, Fratto, accompanied by Patten’s father, recorded a different version of events with Patten’s lawyer. In this version, Fratto claimed she had been there when Patten had killed Micaela and had helped to hold her down. Patten’s lawyer handing over the recording and Fratto was arrested.
Toni Fratto pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole in 18 years. Kody Patten pleaded guilty to first degree murder to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Parade (On Broadway)
Such an important, powerful show! The singing was amazing! The show made me so upset and uncomfortable (it did such a great job telling this story)! I was not much of a fan of Ben Platt before, but he and Micaela Diamond were wonderful. It was so important to see young secular Jewish people telling a Jewish story. Time and again, I see non-Jewish people cast to play important Jewish people. Not this time. I was crying through much of the show. The songs are catchy, but the lyrics are dark. Jason Robert Brown doesn’t disappoint. (I’m also a fan of 13, The Last 5 Years, and Mr. Saturday Night). Thank you for telling Jewish stories. Ben Platt sitting on the stage throughout the intermission in his jail cell. The Shema at the end and the Civil War soldier passing the torch to the WWI soldier--there were so many connections. The direction of the show was powerful. The events in this show took place over a hundred years ago and it still felt relevant and urgent. If you have the chance, please go see it!
