i am so fucking determined to give all of my ocs proper ref sheets this year. specifically so i can actually do artfight.

how do you connect to your character? like how do get to know them so well? how do you pick out their likes, dislikes, habits and those itty bitty bits about them? I've been struggling to do that for sooo many of my ocs, and i'm also at a lost of how to design them. like i once had a clear idea of what kind of character they are, but i wanted to change them a bit, make them a little better, and i feel like I've lost that character and that character i'm working on doesn't exists, no matter how much i loved them and enjoyed writing an drawing them. this has happened with every single character i made and it just makes me think that i may not be cut out for drawing or writing characters. i look up to you so i thought of asking you for help

HELLO HELLO THANK YOU FOR ASKING!! So basically I took this question and turned it into a 1.6k word essay on writing characters and how I like to do it, so, uh, hope you enjoy!! and hope it helps!

OK!! character writing. How do you do it? or, well, how do I do it. I’ve got a few methods that help me out the most and are the most fun for me to think about. Here’s my big secret, if it’s not fun I don’t do it. I’m not here to do homework I’m waaayyyy out of school. I’m a legal adult. I pay my taxes. I’m not gonna do something that doesn’t give my brain the good fun juice. Anyways. My methods are: symbols, archetypes, and character inspiration. I use all these to figure out the CORE of a character, their very beating heart, and most importantly, what haunts them. Everything about a character, in my opinion, comes from this core and their ghost. Their habits, their fears, their joys, their coping mechanisms. So long as you have a clear grasp on their heart, you won’t go astray. Let’s dive into it! The characters I’m going to be using to describe how I use these methods are Alice and others characters from my webcomic—namely Edith, Hatter, and Rougina—and Tomiko (you know her you love her, catgirl supreme).

Symbols! I love using symbols, they’re something that can describe a character through metaphor, even without going into detail about their whole backstory and habits. Tomiko’s symbols are lanterns (specifically light), cats, ghosts/yokai, shapeshifting, and gold. They all work to further her character as a rough around the edges monster cat with a heart of gold, who uses shapeshifting as a method (both literally and metaphorically) to mold herself into what others need her to be. Alice’s symbols are hearts, eyes, and flesh in general. Try picking one general symbol (the ocean, the forest, the city), and see how specific you can get from there. Or pick a god or goddess that resonates with your character and see what symbols are used for them. Rougina (the antagonist in my webcomic) is a war goddess fallen from grace, and is symbolized with land and volcanoes, so I’ve used volcanic plants to evoke her. Personally I also love going through the tarot for symbols, assigning a tarot card to characters (of the major arcana) is a fun exercise. Which leads us nicely into our next method:

Archetypes! The tarot deck’s Major Arcana is pretty much only archetypes. The Empress as the Mother. The Magician as the Wise Mentor. The Tower as The Worst Thing That Could Possibly Happen Oh Jesus Shit. These can help a lot with who your character is. I’m extremely storytelling oriented, so it helps me knowing What Role a character serves in the story they inhabit. Another thing I love in archetypes in the Zodiac. Yes, I am an astrology bitch. The whole reason I love talking about my methods is my Sag rising, I love giving my wisdoms. But astrology can be used for writing, and not just for excusing and not reflecting on shit behavior (can’t help being a gemini!). The zodiac is FILLED WITH ARCHETYPES!!! From elements to how they function! The four elements (you A:TLA bitches know this), and three modalities. If you’re interested please watch Eugene’s Rank King video, it’s very informative on the signs. Also many symbols! For example, Alice is a Taurus—May 4, Alice Liddell’s birthday—so she’s pretty stubborn while also loving creature comforts. Tomiko’s birthday is August 23, making her a Virgo, so she likes being precise in her work. More archetypes you can look for are DnD classes! I love using that to design costumes. One of Edith’s recent costumes is very wizard inspired, since that’s the class I see her having as she’s very studious and driven. Heck, all of Alice and the Nightmare is derived from the character archetypes of the Alice in Wonderland characters! Rougina is specifically the Red Queen, NOT the Queen of Hearts!! The confusion started with the 1951 Disney animated movie when the two characters were merged!! Lewis Carroll himself said the two were different! The Queen of Hearts is an “embodiment of ungovernable passion” and the Red Queen is “the concentrated essence of all governesses”!! GOD!!! Tim Burton meet me in the fucking pit you’ll pay for your alice crimes. anyways.

Archetypes help a lot in costumes too, figuring out what kind of fashion they’d like to wear. You can start broad and get more specific with it (like going from a wizard type character to a wizard character with steampunk themes). Fashion is just an extent of character. What are they comfy in? Are they confident in their body? What colors do they like? Bright high fashion or simple dark sweaters? Ryoko Kui is a master of character design I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend checking out her work.

Another method I like using, specifically for Alice and the Nightmare characters, is what I call the “three trait method”. When I was in middle school we did a production of Alice in Wonderland (I was the White Knight), and too many girls auditioned for Alice. So the director’s solution was to split the character into three parts, and assigning each part to an actor. Her temper, her intelligence, and her innocence, all used in different scenes. Now I use that to think about my own Alice character, except with “polite, temper, and curious”. Edith’s keywords are “nervous, tactical, and intelligent”. Hatter’s are “kind, enthusiastic, and intuitive”. Using keywords can help figure out how they’d react in a situation, what side of them would shine the brightest. Hatter’s want to help everyone is his kindness, but overstepping his bounds can be attributed to his enthusiasm. Edith can know what path to take in a pinch, but her nervousness can freeze her in place. Reading the source material helps a lot with Alice characters too, which brings us to our final point:

Character inspiration!! The art of taking things you like and shoving them into your own characters and stories. DISCLAIMER THO!!! If you take things without really EXAMINING what about them you like, WHY you like them, and how you’d like to evoke that same love in the things you make, the interpretations can come off as shallow. (for more on this subject, watch HBomberguy’s RWBY video essay, specifically the section on “anime homework”)

Tomiko’s biggest inspirations are Izutsumi from Dungeon Meshi, April Ludgate from Parks and Rec, Power and Reze from Chainsawman, San from Princess Mononoke, and Mei from LMK. It’s a good cocktail of aloof, biting, vicious, weird, fierce, loving, and bright. Figuring out what I love about the characters and what I want to write in a character like that helps a lot in writing Tomiko. It’s also really fun in a sense for screenshot redraws and memes.

Music is also a HUUUUUUGE source of inspiration for me, I love making playlists. And even as playlists can change as characters grow and change, having a couple of core songs still helps me ground to that character’s center. For Tomiko it’s “Make Them Gold” by CHVRCHES, and “Nice Girl” by Ashnikko. Alice’s is “Headlock” by Imogen Heap and “Demons” by Hayley Kiyoko, Edith’s is “Warrior” by Kimbra, and Hatter’s is “Dementia” by Owl City.

Ok, we’ve gotten though symbols, archetypes, and made a couple of banger playlists. Next is something that can help write your character, the Big Lie. The thing that keeps them up at night. Their biggest fear, their ghost, what haunts them. What’s holding them back from their goals? What do they need to overcome? That can be as central to their theme as any symbolism. For Tomiko it’s the lie that her emotions don’t matter, only what she can do to be of service to her mother. Her arc is about overcoming her dismissing her own emotions and learning to not run away from the people who she truly cares for. Alice dismisses the literal ghost that is haunting her believing that that will let her have a normal life. Edith pushes down abilities that come naturally to her for fear that she’ll be exiled, not just from society, but the world. Rougina believes she must burden the world’s problems on her own shoulders with no one’s help. The outer character and the inner ghost can reflect, mirror, and inform each other.

Now, listen, sometimes characters are hard to get to know! Tomiko was lol. Quinn was for a looong time. And in times like this, I just, let them be. I listen to some music to get inspired, and let them tell me about themselves when they feel like it. And they will, it just take a little while. And a few dozen quick exploration drawings. But they come through. Also, try not to get bogged down with habits and little details of their character, keep their core in mind, what their heart is. Start broad and get specific. That way, if you feel like you’ve lost your way or the character feels different to you, recenter yourself at their heart and go from there. Or, if you find that their center no longer fits, don’t be afraid to change it! Characters are meant to be fun! First and foremost!! I make characters cause I like writing and storytelling, and drawing little comic for fun and me time. Sometimes characters stick around, sometimes they fall by the wayside. You really have to find what sparks joy, and chase your bliss!

So as long as you have your character’s essence in your hands, and you WANT to keep working on them and drawing them, there’s really no wrong way to go. This whole essay I’ve given is just a set of tools that works for ME, and I HIGHLY encourage you to find stuff that works for you! I really really hope that all this has made sense and isn’t just the ramblings of a madman. Good luck and happy charactering!!

waah thank you very much! i'll try and explain but here’s my colouring-specific tips, or at least how i choose my colours !! <3

unless for stylistic reasons (e.g. greyscale drawing), i personally avoid pure black, greys and white for colouring. go and choose off-colours instead! for lineart, black is okay but i always go for an actual colour anyways heheh. for the background colour of your canvas, sometimes an actual colour (rather than white or grey) may help you pick your palette to be more harmonised!

following this, i also don't like using pure/neon for colours, unless it's for a certain aesthetic or artstyle (e.g. the character has a "toxic/radioactive" aesthetic; the character is a scenedog (or similiar); or highlights). see below for examples! they may be subtle but sometimes the subtly can make the difference you are looking for... if you're looking for a natural look. if you're aiming for the bright/old 2000's artstyle, then pure/neons may be your friend!

when i'm casually drawing characters (oc or not), i rarely colour-pick from the reference image. i find that when you're "forced to make the palette", it can come out more pleasing to your style/atmosphere of the drawing! it’s more personalised that way... like yea, that’s my favourite versions of those colours! i'm not saying that my colours are better though, only that "hey that's me! in those colours!!" you can have the reference image on the side or go by memory. here’s me doing this with pride flags:

nowadays, when drawing the spooky month characters—who have simple designs god bless—i can just imagine their reference and adjust the colours in my head lol example: if i know that Lila's colour palette is purple, and that her winter sweater is coloured lighter than her hair, then i can just go ahead and pick whatever shade i want following that rule!

(of course, always double check with the actual reference for physical design inaccuracies and skin tone if it applies. my advice above is just for general hair/clothing colours! …because yknow you don't want to accidentally whitewash a character's skin in the name of aesthetics lol. if you’re unsure and want to be on the careful side, please do colour pick the skin at least !!)

moving on... gradient maps and certain blending modes (like exclusion, luminosity and darken) can be a game changer too. for normal drawings (e.g. drawings with no environment), i use darken the most because it changes a few colours rather than the entire piece... (the percentages are opacity levels!)

oh and as a really basic shading tip without using blending modes: sometimes, you just gotta go for grey. shading a warmer colour? use grey to make a cool tone. shading a cool colour? use grey to make a warm tone. not all the time (because you don’t wanna make your shading seem muddy), just sometimes…

and that's that! there's always exceptions to rules and often times, your headshot doodle ends up as one big experimental mess (in a fun way, hopefully)!

this is how i choose my colours though most of the time, it is just me going “good enough”

i think we're pretty similar on how we like warm colours! i enjoy going the simple/lazy route and avoid blend modes but then again, shading is a whole different thing…

oh GOD, the biggest most popular stereotype eh? ironically asked just as i'm listening to the narrator's voice lines...

well, i'm going to have to go with something OBVIOUS & say that that would be the IMPOSSIBLE to miss notion that " he's hot " & people envisioning him ONLY through an attractive filter;

do i think his voice is attractive? of COURSE i do, i'm not made of stone! & kevan PRIDES himself in his work & knows a vast majority are INSANE about his voice, as well he should, he's got great talent!

HOWEVER, then going on to define his EVERYTHING based on this attraction is annoying at best & sickeningly irritating at worst.

it's SO obvious some narrator designs are solely based on artist wet dreams or banking on others', with the narrator's actual characterization being thrown COMPLETELY out the window.

guys your sexyman literally gets all pouty without attention & has the bite of a 5th grader, he would Not be as attractive or cool as you think he is. this ISN'T even exclusive TO people who make the narrator a handsome twink either! however, it is WAY more prevalent in that area, therefore we side-eye.

it just feels a Lot like others create designs SIMPLY based around aesthetics & generic appeal rather than... creating a CHARACTER, or recognizing the character that DOES come attached with the voice you find so hot. & then SOMETIMES, people form entirely alternate characterization for their design rather than canon, but still insisting that it IS indeed canon!

listen can we stop touting the funny clock 0ut guy as the Token, peak, & true TSP narrator design. i like him too but it's making me real upset now

IF you're going for characterization of the narrator that you want to be AS TRUE to canon as possible, you need to take a step back & realize this man is a manchild & probably does Not have the divine powers of a god & doesn't have to Look or Act as attractive as you think his voice is. even the most BEAUTIFUL aspects of a person can come from a deeply flawed individual & that's okay, & in characters, EXTREMELY endearing! insisting to make a character beautiful & flawless in every aspect just results in a very flat character that will ONLY ever serve as basic eyecandy, & only to a handful in the end.

beyond that, i can't really think of anything else that's as strongly stereotyped for the narrator beyond. you know, general fandom mischaracterizations methink? pushing his attitude to extremes with NO even level & misunderstanding his intentions. ...but at this rate, i'll TAKE THE most pathetic soft boy narrator as opposed to the absolutely physically RIPPED daddy narrators i've had to see a few times. jesus

🎮 VIDEO GAME CONTROLLER — what are three of your oc's favorite hobbies?

Being a munch Although it was initially going to be his career (tattoo artist Tommy-truthers make some noise), I can see Tommy enjoying art as a hobby and way to relax/clear his head. He never used to draw a lot of people before, focusing instead on other popular subjects for tattoo designs such as ships and snakes and tigers. But his newer sketchbooks feature a lot more of Beth and Joseph, with a few of Simon and his mum interspersed between his studies of household items and appliances.

Tommy is a Man U fan, as is family tradition. I count football fanaticism as a hobby because have you seen these people. Do you understand the dedication to know so much about all those balls and points and such? Dear god. Tommy, Simon, and Beth on footie nights out were terrifying concepts, many Chelsea fans mauled. Sad!

It mightn't be strictly a hobby, but I can see Tommy redirecting any pent up energy towards making small renovations in his home/his mum's home, or even woodworking and making things like a jewellery box for Beth, or little carved nativity scene for Joseph's nursery class. Man works with his hands and his thoughts can get a bit much at times, so may as well redirect towards something productive, as he's been taught (even if this does encroach into dysfunction territor when he's working to exhaustion so he doesn't dream when he finally sleeps).

🩹 ADHESIVE BANDAGE — does your oc have any physical and/or mental disabilities?

I can see Tommy having chronic pain from his back injury and the resultant muscle strain and poor healing that came of it. Nothing a couple heat pads and, uh, working a labour intensive job can't fix...

Between drug addiction and childhood trauma, it's not out of the picture for Tommy to also have developed PTSD/CPTSD from his experiences. For a myriad of reasons (potential access to counselling, access to familial support, not being autistic, not being in the military) it's not as extreme as Simon's, and so his emotional intelligence isn't as stunted, but he's still very much living with the effects of being physically and verbally abused as a child, as well as being addicted to opiates in the past, far into adulthood. Again, has better tools to cope with it, but Tommy isn't perfect, and I can see most of his symptoms manifesting in fawning responses than Simon's fight.

Tommy also has leanings towards depression, and there are times when his mental health declines to the point of it being disabling. I don't see him being diagnosed with depression, nor complex PTSD, as the NHS mental health services are in fucking shambles and some doctors mightn't even recognise the latter in his time.

So. I don't have a clear answer to this, because I need to know what Simon's blood type is, and it's not listed anywhere. I think there is a fun off-stage/underlying tragedy in Simon and Tommy having incompatible blood types, in that even if Simon had gotten to the flat in time, he wouldn't have been able to 'save' Tommy via donating blood. Something something, the nature of tragedy so deeply set in Ghost's being that it's biological.

Perhaps it's campy, perhaps it's too much, but whatever‼️my oc now.

TOMMY IS THE YOUNGER BROTHER! The wiki is LYING the comics confirm so here:

Tommy is 6'2" and lanky as anything, and unless his brother is on leave, he tends to be the tallest person in the room, bless. Additionally, I can see Tommy having insane forearm and grip strength just from being a tradesman for the better guts of a decade.

Some people have noticed, but Tommy doesn't drink alcohol at all in 'I Wait For You', which is on purpose. He's chosen not to drink, in spite of Britain's heavy drinking culture, as a means of preventing any reliance/gateways, as well as the fact that he doesn't like getting drunk, anyways, primarily because of bad memories of his father after one too many drinks.

This one is long, immense, ultra suspensey, with a lot of different characters interacting in interesting ways I never thought before, very lawlight and very explicit, (but I read it all in like 3 days because it caught me BAD and was foaming at the mouth during the entire course of it), also was the founding inspiration to my BB brainrot and design-> Nights

Finally, my AWESOME friends have made abbie x my BB fics for me back in the days which I treasure with my heart, I feel a bit schoopid sharing them because they're basically my OCs and their story remains a secret but they're beautifully written and. I die. I die everytime I remember they did these for me -> First Christmas (explicit), Stand under my Umbrella (short n funny), Just Another Day (sad and short, based on a comic I did years ago)

How I feel about L and Mikami

L is special to all of us, love the guy, haven't met a single DN fan who doesn't like L. He's just fun and unapologetic which is what I like about him the most.

Mikami I have a hard time caring about, he's just not my usual type of character at all. He's too rigid for me, although he has his unintentional funny side. I also felt he had no chemistry with any other characters, so that made him less interesting for me

Favourite day and week day

you should at least be vaguely familiar with my em. every single au and whatever hetalia character i feel like grabbing for that day goes in there. interesting little tidbit that somehow hasn't come up so far is that in more human AUs of mine he's part irish! ~20% of icelandic males and 60% of females actually have irish/keltic ancestry!!! ireland being his mom hc is going WILD in me. he's also very magic because that headcanon singlehandedly started the ice obsession in me. how well in tune he is with it and how exactly it looks like depends on the au . i also make him closer friends with swe and fin because i can👍

a fusion of 2 groups put into one world, connected by one flimsy tie. it's mostly analogous to real life but no homophobia👍

Mikael started out as a swedish micronation oc but we don't talk about that. he has a chicken called omelette because of inside jokes during... my wattpad era... shudders. i project onto him a lot and lots of his design is just wish fullfillment. while i love my ocs suffering and angst, because i put so much of myself in him, ultimately, his story is one of healing. major point of difference between us though is that his parents abandoned him and mine... didn't.do.that. 💀👍

Do u have any tips for beginner artists on where to start for anatomy (also hi I love your work hope you have a good day)

Ahhh, let's seeeee~. I mostly used Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton, and Complete Guide to Life Drawing by Gottfried Bammes, along with your typical Bridgman and Loomis books. The goal isn't to memorize every single thing in these books (which was my mistake in the beginning, and so I would study study study, and developed a fear of applying said studies because oh god I need to understand it perfectly. Also I hardly used reference (????!!!!) because what kind of artist would I be if I couldn't pull this shit pristinely out of my ass /s. Don't do that, use references liberally. Utilize free resources please). THE GOAL OF THE BOOKS: It's to understand the general underlying structures of the skeleton, joint articulation and how the musculature affects and is affected by that well enough that when drawing the live model, or when utilizing references (USE REFERENCES!), you understand what you're looking at. Also while you're at it, go have fun drawing some 1mil dance studio vids on youtube. Those are really fun for understanding how clothing works in motion lmao. AND take a gander at how your favorite artists do their thing, because you'll often find that their anatomy is stylized in a way that appeals to you. Maybe something you'll want to practice emulating from time to time. Everyone's style (or styles) are amalgamations of their inspirations. Anatomy can be dry material, so it's good to intersperse your studies with fun shit like drawing OCs in those poses, etc etc. ANYWAY, yeah. YOU HAVE A GOOD DAY ALSO!

Well, since you asked, I'll share my most worked on thylacine OC. I'm actually a tabletop RP player, and among the games we play is Changeling the Lost. My PC in that game is a thylacine beast changeling!

Now, this will be complicated if you don't know Changeling the Lost as a game, but basically, he's obsessed with his fetch and madly in love with him (this stems from a feeling that "no one but me can understand me" - and since a fetch is normally the "copy" a fae makes of the person they kidnap...). While now he doesn't feel like no one but him can understand him, that doesn't change the feelings for his fetch. (PS: don't worry, they are not "like brothers" and don't even look the same because of all the fae modifications).

Now, our campaign is a bit peculiar because our GM introduced a plot twist that's not in the canon of Changeling the Lost, which is that not all changelings are the "original" to a fetch. In some instances, a fae takes a human only for a minimal amount of time, not even taking them to Arcadia, and copies them as a base template in order to make "a better version of them" - in these cases, the "fetch" would be the actual person, still as they were before but without memories of the event (aside from some alien abduction theories some may have), while the changeling is a pure fae construct made from scratch and some raw materials. Some high ranking escaped changelings know about it but don't share the information to avoid emotional trauma in the changelings under their wing. Thing is, my character figured it out thanks to his obsession - basically, he sees his fetch with such rose tinted glasses that he always thought it's impossible for such perfection to be a mere copy, so he always told people he himself is the copy... and hey, it happens to be true! This is useful too, because that made it pretty easy to undo the normal fear of a fetch towards their changeling, as it was just a small spell and not ingrained in his whole being.

At his point, my dear thylacine managed to become very close friends with his original - though nothing more for now - and he's dead set on usurping his prior fae master and actually entering Arcadia and becoming a fae lord - which would also grant immortality to the fetch if he takes him along. He's pretty much a fae at heart to be fair (except he has actual empathy for the changelings and humans) - knowing he's a fae construct made him all the more certain that he doesn't have to try and be "human" to be himself.

Also fun fact, at some point when he was transformed into an actual thylacine thanks to one of his powers, he met an Australian vampire who was in his city for stuff, and the vampire went in overdrive heh (cause how the hell do you meet a supposedly extinct animal from your home country in PARIS of all stuff - which is where the story is set). They ended up becoming best friends thanks to the unlikely circumstancs that led and to it and followed their encounter. Currently the vampire still "lives" at his house (which is in the basement, so quite useful for the lack of sunlight).

Hey fellow PnP player x3 God I wanted to play Changeling the Lost (and VtM) since years but just cant find a group 😭😭

I love this switch with the fetches ngl, but nothing compares to the sweet drama of coming back and see this thing that has taken your place. Everything could happen, I love it! (My character, that I never got to play, would so try and befriend his Fetch and since he has a twin they would be triplets lol)

Also I love your art??? Thats so cool, like hello?? The design! I wish I could draw like that!

OHH WONDERFUL QUESTION. Ohh man this post is gonna be really long I'm sorry.

i usually come up with what they teach first and then go on trying to imagine what they'd look like. its usually a somewhat long process for me

for b. happy, he wasn't really supposed to teach about emotions at first. i almost considered making him teach about fame and comedy but something in my head was like "comedy = laughter = happiness = emotion" and I was like OH MY GOD. IM A GENIUS. if I didn't come up with him being an emotions teacher he wouldn't exist at all really. instead of happy I wouldve made mic take his place and teach about being a famous comedian instead. Good god can you imagine

yeah I'm also showing concept art idgaf

after i made happy i had an idea for another oc but this time they would teach about acting and drama. you already know this is about comedy and tragedy but they were originally one person, with tragedy being the host and her having comedy as a seperate mask on his head that would occasionally talk to them. basically some kind of evil parasite. Although I ended up splitting them into two different people as i felt like it would be better

AND FINALLY PERI!!!! It took me a while to design her honestly ! I came up with the idea of a character that taught about how dangerous the world can be, without realizing THEYRE a danger to the world itself. I wanted something related to caution and hazard signs so she was gonna be a really tall stop sign at first... But i thought that was basic as hell so THANK GOD you guys don't have to deal with stop sign peri. Not pictured because i didnt draw it but after I trashed her stop sign design she was gonna be an armadillo! I thought it made sense since she's a really skittish and nervous character, she could curl up and hide in her shell. Buuut I immediately scrapped that idea Rest in piece armadillo peri

out of all of them peri was by far my most favorite one to conceptualize and design. she was such a fun character to work with

little fun fact. I've definitely said it before but they had other names! After i posted b. Happy for the first time, I thought his name was goofy and was gonna rename him to Mr. Smiley, but the post was gaining a lot of notes and so I thought. Why even bother with the name change!

comedy and tragedy also had names at first, those names being connie and tracey. Comedy and tragedy were originally placeholder names but i ended up settling on those ones because it just. Fit yknow

It took me about a day to come up with peri's name. I wanted her to be named after dangerous chemicals and whatnot, and i told myself that if i couldn't find a name for her i would have to name her methyl bromide. Literally. But I ended up naming her after the periodic table itself

june! i did the most writing i've ever done, saw newsies with my friend ceriann, met ryan kopel for the first time, started to genuinely engage with fandom after years, made a bunch of great friends, got a massive boost in my confidence - spectacular, really.

12. talk about a new friend you made this year

DAVEY!! my dear friend davey you are so skilled and so hardworking and so genuinely kind that it actually surprises me. i have been the most obnoxious nihilist for,,, years and it's quite rejuvenating for the soul i think to be surrounded by kind and genuine people, and you're a big part of that. i'm so grateful for your constant support and i'm so happy i got to support you in return by delivering your art to the newsies cast at musical con and get you that video of them, too :) and i still can't get over the manhattan wv drawing you did!! was not expecting it at all but oh my god it's wonderful. you're such a creative and hardworking person davey, it keeps on inspiring me. i hope good things keep happening to you - i'm so grateful for all your support and to have you as a friend :)

14. favorite book you read this year?

WRANGLESTONE!! yeah i read a lot of more Classic and Scholarly books for my classes but wranglestone was my 'treat myself' book - i got it when i went to see billie the kid because i wound up walking past 'gay's the word' by pure accident so i decided to make a big queer day of it and treated myself to a fun little gay zombie cowboy novel. and god i love it. i'm not a Classic and Scholarly writer and i've always been a little ashamed of that but this book reminded me i don't need to be :) there are people who want and need the kind of stories i want to tell, and i'm one of them. this book's so special to me for that. and yknow, it helps that it's a genuinely good adventure with a cute romance, a compelling mystery and excellent worldbuilding.

25. did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? describe one

i think the only characters i created this year were alice, maggie and florence for run boy run... i HAVE been noodling an oc for a children's book series concept i have though! haven't decided on a name or design but i know i want him to be a cowboy who rides a utahraptor and has a little hunting crew of smaller velociraptors he's rescued (i actually had this idea before reading wranglestone btw. cowboy media just calls to me)

Under cut for length; I needed to talk about my babiesss.

What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)? 

Shae: Shae was appearance, though and through. She'd gone through so many changes; species changes as she traveled through fandoms and back and forth between getting pulled from them to be from original concepts. Being online during the massive point online where "Mary Sue bad and you're a terrible person for making them!", she kind of just went onto this backburner with everything; looks, appearance, story, everything.

Ripper: Mostly appearance, but a super loose as hell backstory as well. Rips was originally a Left 4 Dead OC and of a concept that never actually made it to the game at that. Most of what did exist of his backstory was just that he was an asylum escapee who was turned. Rather than the straight jacket being closed up, his arms were free. He's had the most changes over his entire timespan.

Arsenic: Appearance 100%. He actually was originally a concept made by my nephew! He wanted a zombie chef, so I made a zombie chef!

3. How did you choose their name? 

Shae: I honestly don't even remember where her name came from. It wasn't exactly a popular name when I made her, damn probably about seventeen years ago now? Maybe longer, I think.

Ripper: Was originally a sort of punny name. "A scream ripping at one's throat". Where Joseph Trumoil came from, is one of those things that just... happened. Sometimes names just get stuck in my head. I'll quote him directly from the WIP of Chapter 26 of Mnemonic Impressions for why it's still Ripper: "Thanks to my old line of work, if it were humanly possible at that time, I could rip someone apart and know exactly how to do it to cause the most damage; didn’t help I used t’ do some body building. My friends were… fucked up t’ say the least."

Arsenic: I kinda thought it would be funny for an undead, zombie chef to have his name be the same as a poison.

8. What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story? 

Shae: Let's just say that I am actually very mouthy like Shae it. And, just like with her current situation with Sinjin, I need to learn how to keep my mouth shut so I don't get hurt.

Ripper: There's actually not much story wise I relate to with Rips. If anything, I'm envious of my own character. He's charismatic, charming, his style is impeccable. I guess he did get a lot of my "do no harm, but take no shit" personality.

Arsenic: The cooking! Arsenic is literally probably the person I would become (sans the murders) if I actually stayed in the food service industry.

12. What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)? 

Shae: It's actually been difficult to keep her silver tongued, combative, defiant, but also keeping her... alive. In all honesty, she would probably be dead by now if I didn't mellow her out a bit. She's legit supposed to be as vile as Sinjin is, cutting some completely reprehensible stuff, but I also know that she would have been long since dead before her story even started.

Ripper: No lie, actually nailing down his official design. Every time I think I have something solid, I go "oh, this would work with him!" and then things would change. Rinse and repeat. Now it's more just trying to nail down exactly who I wanna build his facial structure off of, because William Treat is EXACTLY how he smiles, but I also adore him having sharp features like Dum Dum from Cyberpunk 2077 has. Trying to blend the two together is... fun.

Arsenic: HIS FACE. HIS FUCKING FACE. I DID IT TO MYSELF BUT GOD WHY

16. What is something about your OC can make you cry? 

Shae: Her story. Like, god her story is fucked up and just the fact that so much about her kids was kept from her and knowing everything she's gone through, that she's the way she is through so much tragedy and just out of a necessity to survive.

Ripper: Also his backstory, but also like... this man is such a sweetheart and sensitive. Be it because he's just being so goddamn cute or because he's going through an existential crisis, he's probably gonna say something that would either turn me into a mushy mess or bawling my eyes out because why did I hurt you this much.

Arsenic: There's two things with him. When he lets his walls down and lets people in, showing that he's not just a hardened ghoul who hates everything around him. Also, if anything were to happen to Crow, this man's heart would absolutely shatter and he'd probably lose his goddamn mind. That sort of mental torment of feeling like he's lost his soul mate, knowing how he'd react to it, especially now with them in his life again.

19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?

Shae: Not so much of a fact of the character itself (because imho anything I really say with her will give away parts of Addicted), but the fact that she's the second OC I've ever created! She's my second oldest OC, being seventeen (plus) years old.

Ripper: He's only second generation American born in his family! His parents are the first born, his grandmother is from Palermo, his grandfather from Verona.

Arsenic: No matter what, Arsenic was meant to cook and I don't mean that just by his concept alone. He's someone who would be considered to have a natural born talent for what he does and I genuinely cannot think of anything else I would have ever even considered putting him in. If it wasn't a chef, it would've been a cafe owner.

hello! I absolutely love eden and her design 😍! is it ok if i ask what is how will she interact with the other villains such maleficent,hades,scar etc basically the recruiters masters

I actually got all giddy for my first DVR OC ask~, Eden was such a fun girl to work with, I'm so happy to continue with the others who are more or less going to be hard to draw lol

Also my first video I saw on your blog when I hovered was the Vil and leona arguing so that helped set the mood for me somehow-

While her and Malfie get along well, Eden knows how to get on Maleficent's good side by being respectful and at least acting like what she been through

Maleficent however is a powerful mage so she can sense a lie from her, but she doesn't say anything as she's rather good in the forest

As I mentioned with Maleficent and I'll say for the others, Eden knows how to quickly adapt her personality to match those she's trying to get on her good side, Hades didn't fall for that trick at all

He finds her entertaining and she finds him honestly admirable but can understand why Ms Hades gets so annoyed in some cases

Again, she knew well how to talk to him but she really was expecting an actual lion staring at her face!

He was amused by her especially after she got over her shock

Oh Gods they get along too well!

Like to the point once Jack saw they're still friendly after a hour he paled and went "Oh no-" and quickly began to do whatever it took for him to please Eden so she wouldn't go off on a lie that'll get him in trouble

Hmmm two beautiful women iconic in their work related to animals? yeah they seem to get along perfectly well darling~!

Cruella finds her very refreshing like her young self, but still openly talks about Gaston without fear

Eden is still as respectful as she always is, need more ally's am I right? But she honest to Heaven above find our favorite pirate man not masculine enough and annoying, but that's just her not growing up with emotions shown openly

She's a bit jealous of Lady Hook and the Captain's relationship and how they don't seem to really want to harm their enemies aka a bunch of children in animal onesies

Yet another pair that once their recruiter sees are getting along are dreaded it forevermore!

Ursula may find her a hoot but that doesn't stop her trying to manipulate her thinking by talking about her looks and talents and just slightly mentioning her and Gaston's bond not as good

Yeah she doesn't go neat that man for obvious reasons, and that's not just that he makes her uncomfortable on so many levels. He would down right do what he did for Esmerelda which was berate her of her looks and religion while being mega creepy! Does she say anything to Veil? No...she honestly too embarrassed to ruin that image of perfection of her close friend's master

A mix of Cruella and Maleficent with Eden being her oh so well acted self and her knowing of it but doesn't care and Eden's aware she knows and doesn't care and loves it

These two know a bad-ass bitch when they see one and a strong ally (If it obvious I LOVE the Evil Queen?)

Again, a weird accidental friendship formed due to knowing a bad-bitch when they see one! He knows well she's a trickster who has nothing to lose but everything to gain and she knows he's just the same

They talk often and he's not aware of her tricking him to give her some pretty things he earned lol

🎯 -What do they do best?

ohhhh this is a hard one… i think since becoming the master at arms for the caesura she’s gotten really knowledgeable about weapons, especially older ones. she’s good at knowing exactly how to kill stuff.

🧊 - Is their current design the first one?

oh my god ABSOLUTELY NOT. her first design is gonna be her human one with the revengers which i have NO art of. she long brown hair that she wore down her back, dark eyes, wore a white shirt, yellow shorts, a black jean jacket, and combat boots. when i made her into a mechanisms oc, i took her initial revengers design and kept it about the same and then put her through the ringer, and also made her hair black and her eyes green.

of course we have the part where she looses her eye in our wonderland clone, then after she leaves the revengers when yrt comes back and tells her what happened to rosette, she cuts her hair short (like bob length) and gets rid of the jacket. while with lady saturn, she starts wearing a yellow button up and long black pants, but sticks with the combat boots.

when she gets mechanized, she gets brand new metal organs but those aren’t visible on the outside of course, and also gets a fun new eye (a blue one) and fun mechanical lines coming out of it, and i DO have art for this (ty @redrobemerle )

her hair gets longer in the time in between getting mech’d and joining the caesura, though she wears in different now. she also takes hylo’s dog tags when lady saturn murders them (ty for your consent to harm your guy).

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

ok you KNOW THIS but now i have to tell the internet and also whatever rival crews people who follow me but do not know this already.

for those of you who don’t know: back when buzzfeed unsolved was still running, the boys did a mid week q&a show about the episodes called the postmortem. due to a series of shenanigans, shane started doing an after show during the postmortems called the hotdaga: a hot dog saga about animated (stock art) foodstuffs going on adventures throughout the universe that involved magic, war crimes, an alien species he created, and original music. it’s genuinely really good but it is also about food. in like,, 2017 or 2018 me and some friends (including you, steven, you bastard) started playing a dnd campaign taking place during the space war that shane establishes as backstory for the war, and then it spiraled into utter insanity and beauty. it was the first campaign i ever played and it meant a lot to me and so much of it was stupid and TECHNICALLY we were all foodstuffs though very little art reflects that. hex was my character for this campaign. she was a rogue. and also a banana. and i loved her.

✏️ - How often do you draw/write about the OC?

not very often anymore, which makes me a bit sad. one of these days i’m gonna sit down and least write up all of her backstory so i can set it upon the rest of rival crews lol.

💀 - Does your OC have any phobias?

i BELIEVE i established at one point that she hates spiders. she’s also deeply terrified of getting close to people and losing them again and not being able to save them but that’s less fun.
