Beginner’s Mind Study

A study piece for a larger commission for the HeadSpace headquarters in California.

The brief was to created a piece meaning Curious Mind, in other words, a fresh state of ‘beginners mind’ – shoshin in Japanese.

The term ‘beginners mind’ is an important value for meditation practitioners. A popular quote originating from Shunryu Sazuki Roshi’s Zen literature Classic on meditation: ‘Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind’

Although this term translates well in English from Japanese, a direct translation in Tibetan is not quite as straightforward.

After much investigation, it was agreed that the best translation of ‘beginners mind’ was inspired from one line found in the famous Dorje Chang Tungmo, which reads In the very freshness of the essence of thought –

གང་ཤར་རྟོག་པའི་ངོ་བོ་སོ་མ་དེ

The key word in this sentence being so ma te – སོ་མ་དེ་ meaning that freshness of mind – Illustrated here as the primary calligraphy in a fresh, free and brisk moment of totality.

Below which is another line of Tsugtung script, acting as a foundation – which translates as to remain in a state of natural freshness – སོ་མར་བཞག་པ།

MAKING LIFE BEAUTIFUL ༊*·˚

beauty is a high value of mine, it makes life worth living, and with that i don't mean conforming to commercial beauty standards, but cultivating a beautiful environment, inner thoughts/mindset, and lifestyle. here are some things i want to do to make my life more beautiful:

avoiding stress by doing tasks and assignments early

feeling refreshed by not staying up late

experiencing the sunrise and sunset by waking up early and being more mindful of my environment/nature

having a clean and tidy room

having an organized digital space

having an athletic and flexible body by regularly exercising and stretching

having an uncluttered mind by journaling my thoughts everyday

having a positive mindset (no self-loathing, ugly thoughts!)

making life meaningful by not only consuming, but also creating beautiful things through creative means

pursuing my hobbies (writing, drawing, singing, dancing, crafting)

eating less processed food & more beautifully prepared healthy food

being hygienic by smelling good, caring for my nails & hair, and wearing stainless clean clothing

avoiding stress by not being forced to hurry

concentrating being in the present moment

minimizing social media usage

creating a nice atmosphere with matching music

basically romanticizing my life

i hope these tips help you cultivate a more beautiful life too! i might make more blog posts if i feel inspired, because they are pretty too ;)

Kyudo…the long and winding road

It has been a while since I did a Kyudo post. Yes, I am still at it. There have been a few unpleasant moments. Like the second breaking of my new Yumi, which was supposed to replace the first broken one. By breaking I mean the face cracking and becoming delaminated. My first one from The States happened, I could have had it refaced, but the cost in Japan to do that was almost what I paid for it.…
