wrote a poll about zip codes, the USPS implementation of postal codes. wanted to know how much of the lore was common knowledge. apparently the fact that “ZIP Code” is specifically the implementation in the US, a registered trademark of the US Postal Service, developed by and for the US, and not a generic term for postal codes is uh. not common knowledge. so now i’ve got people bugging me about being US-centric and ignorant of the rest of the world because i asked about something that exists solely in the US because that’s what i wanted to know about. i guess i got my answer though

I did learn that the Philippines refer to their postal code as a zip code, but they only have one! Neat

"Zone 28" on the mailbox refers to the part of the city they were in. It was a precursor to ZIP codes, which would incorporate zones into their numbers.

Today, 1 July, is Zip Code Day, as Japan's first postcode system was launched on this day in 1968 (Showa 43). Postage stamps were issued to publicise the postcode, and subsequently the five-digit postcode was changed to a seven-digit postcode in 1998 (Heisei 10).

It has been a minute! Here's one for you, I needed to find all the zip codes within a certain distance from a city, in a certain state. For instance, every zip code in Texas within 150 miiles of Texarkana.

I get Texas but I thought Salt Lake City area and Nashville would be the most expensive…or are they in these zip codes? I also thought it be Philadelphia or Pittsburgh for Pa, not New Hope.
