Computer Lab Series 1

This set is inspired by: early 80s computers, my dad’s office when he taught electrical engineering, and VHS tape artifacts. Many of the pieces in here are stylized versions of real-life things, which I’ve included more info about under the cut.

This set contains 11 new meshes and features 2 retro computers, a desk chair, a desk, and lots of retro clutter items.

Technical notes/known issues:

Sims’ hands slightly clip into the computers with angled keyboards; this is not something I can fix due to how the animations are set up.

The computers don’t have mice (they wouldn’t have had them at the time), so the Sims will move their hands around as if they were using an invisible mouse.

The BBC Micro computer has a medium decor slot on top -- perfect for cute plants, books, clutter, etc. In testing, I noticed that if you place something there that trails down the sides, Sims will not want to use the computer (you have to make them sit in the chair and then interact with it). Most items don’t seem to do this so I’m leaving the slot in - just know if you put trailing stuff on top, this might happen.

The cassette recorder has a decor slot in the perfect place to actually put the cassette tape in it, and I love it! I’d recommend picking the cassette tape you want before putting it in; once it’s in the recorder, I couldn’t figure out an easy way to get it out again. You can always delete the whole thing and re-place a cassette recorder.

I think a lot of us had our fingers crossed that we’d get an illustration of Ruggie pulling off this crazy maneuver from a book 2 twistune/rhythmic:

But what we ended up getting was a banger too, even if it wasn’t what we were anticipating. The composition is sort of framed to give the illusion of Ruggie hanging upside down though! You can tell he's having tons of fun zipping around on the field and pulling the rug out from under his rivals' noses. He's so nonchalant about the disk whizzing by that close to him too 😂

It's really interesting for the Magift Club groovies in particular since it's a physical activity unique to Twisted Wonderland. Its rules and special equipment allow for a fascinating range of dynamic poses compared to the Basketball Club and Track and Field Clubs which we have previously seen. You can see this expressed in Ruggie's unique furniture animation as well!

A lot of attention and care went into this for sure. Excited to see Leona and Epel's Club Wears in the future!! I hope they have the same level of detail.

I have, and I'm ashamed at the lack of workplace safety! For reference, the woman is using an angle grinder like this:

Improperly handling the angle grinder! It's upside-down for God's sake!

Let's try to fix that:

Always wear eye protection when using an angle grinder! Getting flying sparks of shaved steel in your eye hurts like hell and can blind you.

Always wear ear protection when using an angle grinder! Angle grinders are extremely loud and will cause hearing loss after sustained exposure.

Secure your work material! Here we've added a clamp to secure the work to our pretend work bench. If the grinder catches, you don't want the work flying back at you.

Hold the grinder properly! You want to use both hands, ideally one on the main grinder body and one on the secondary handle, if installed. Place the grinding disk to the work at about a 10 degree angle.

This makes for a much better and safer workplace. However, it still isn't enough. You need to wear a face shield certified for grinding as well. If the grinding disk breaks, that mask may be the only thing stopping it from flying into your carotid artery and killing you in under a minute. Also, unfortunately, you do need to do up your shirt. It really hurts to have thousands of red hot metal splinters impale themselves into your torso, and they're near-impossible to get out once they're stuck. Zip up!

One thing that's funny about being a big retrotech nerd is that I sometimes completely forget that for many people, this is so absolutely alien.

Not even a 5.25" or something weirder like an 8" or a zip disk? Okay!

Like when I did that THE BIG ONE post I knew it'd get some response but I was surprised how much people just loved seeing & hearing a dot matrix printer. I have like three in my garage! They're just normal for me.

I dunno. It just makes me happy to see people amazed and excited for all the stuff I take for granted these days
